Former President Obama endorses Charles Booker in Kentucky Senate race

    November 1, 2026 / 9:00 AM EST / CBS News

Former President Barack Obama endorsed Democratic nominee Charles Booker in the Kentucky Senate race on Sunday, two days before Election Day.

“I’m proud to support Charles Booker for the U.S. Senate,” former President Barack Obama said in a statement shared first with CBS News. “Charles cares deeply about the people of Kentucky, and by sending him to Washington, working families across the Commonwealth would have a leader who understands their struggles and has what it takes to make real change.”

Booker said he was ‘humbled and honored” to receive the endorsement. He is running against Republican Rep. Andy Barr to succeed Senator Mitch McConnell. McConnell, 84, announced his retirement last year and is Kentucky’s longest serving senator.

“Mitch McConnell essentially built a career leveraging Kentucky to become one of the most powerful politicians in our country, and we know that by flipping Kentucky, we flip the U.S. Senate,” Booker told CBS News in an interview earlier this year.

While Kentucky is not among the states listed in CBS News Senate battleground tracker, Booker’s campaign says it has internal polling that indicates the race could be tightening. The race is considered solid Republican by Cook Political Report.

Aides are also citing an increase in Democratic turnout during early voting last week as a sign of potential momentum. According to the Kentucky State Board of Elections, more than 267,000 individuals had cast ballots. At least 95,645 registered Democrats had already voted compared to 83,726, Secretary of State Michael Adams said in a post Friday.

“A lot of it has been encouraging people to pay attention and to know that there is a race here, that it is competitive, and that there is a path to win,” Booker said.

Booker challenged Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul in 2022 and lost by nearly 24 points. Although Kentucky is a deep-red, Democrats are hoping the national envorinment will help them make inroads in some unlikely places.

Barr has cast Booker as a “socialist experiment” and “the most extreme candidate in the history of our state.” President Trump has endorsed Barr and visited the Commonwealth last month.

“He’s been an amazing congressman,” Mr. Trump said during an Oct. 17 rally in Highland Heights. “He’ll be one of the great US senators.”

Obama’s endorsement follows a slew of other high-profile endorsements for the Kentucky Democrat, including from a group of senators, including Sens. Michael Bennet, Mark Kelly, Lisa Blunt Rochester, Chris Van Hollen, Raphael Warnock and Elizabeth Warren, who announced their support on Saturday. Booker is also backed by Govs. J.B. Pritzker and Wes Moore and he stumped with Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and DNC Chair Ken Martin last week.

The former president has issued nearly two dozen endorsements for Democratic candidates and rallied for Senate candidates in Georgia, Michigan and Ohio late last month. He has raised more than $15 million for party committees throughout the midterm cycle.

    https://news-multimedia-1393112320.cos.ap-guangzhou.myqcloud.com/gas-prices.jpg

    https://news-multimedia-1393112320.cos.ap-guangzhou.myqcloud.com/cbs-poll-house-estimate.jpg

Midterm elections preview: How might this year’s vote change Washington?

    November 1, 2026 / 9:15 AM EST / CBS News

Every four years, we get to choose our own president. But every two years, we have other elections, where we choose all 435 members of the House of Representatives, and a third of our Senators, and a whole lot of governors.

This is a midterm elections year, our chance to steer the direction of the country.

“These are historically viewed as referenda on the job performance of a president,” said New Yorker politics columnist Susan Glasser. She believes Tuesday’s elections will be historic in a long list of ways.

First, there’s the matter of the president’s steadily sinking popularity. “The president is the most unpopular American president in the history of modern polling going into a midterm election,” Glasser said.

The main reason is the price of everything. “People are so angry,” Glasser said. “It’s symbolized in how much money they’re paying to put gas in their cars at the pump, or how much money they’re paying for groceries. But it’s obviously much, much broader than that.”

    https://news-multimedia-1393112320.cos.ap-guangzhou.myqcloud.com/gas-prices.jpg

What drivers see on their way to the polling station. CBS News

Another historic factor: The number of political ads. “This will be a record-breaking year basically any way you slice it,” said Wesleyan University professor Erika Franklin Fowler, who studies political ads. “The amount of money that’s being spent is enormous.”

This year, midterm ad spending will be over $11 billion, a record. But do political ads actually change anybody’s mind? “Really not all that much,” Fowler said. “No amount of advertising is going to change citizens’ minds about the cost of goods in this type of economy.”

Also historic is the rise of artificial intelligence in the ads: Computer-generated scenes of candidates that look like real video. Fowler said, “It’s having candidates say things that they never said or do things that they never did. Those are particularly concerning because it’s not clear to the viewer that this never happened.”

How is that legal? “There’s no federal regulation of AI in advertising,” said Fowler, “so most of it actually doesn’t even carry a disclaimer.”

And with just days to go before the election, is any ad, or any rally, going to change a voter’s mind? “That might be the irony of it all – we’re seeing a lot more early voting this year,” Fowler said, “and so a lot of the advertising that’s on air now is actually too late to make a difference.”

    The Trump factor

Pollster Anthony Salvanto, who conducts our CBS News polls, said, “We see, overall, the numbers shifting toward the Democrats. It’s not historically unusual for a president’s party to lose seats in a midterm.”

So, what is driving voters: The war? Corruption? Gas prices? Salvanto said, “It all of the above.”

Another big factor, according to Salvanto, is the president: “Two-thirds of folks tell us they’re going to the polls for Congress either to support him (26%), or, in more cases, to oppose his policies (41%).”

The president is a factor for the candidates, too. Most ads for Republican candidates don’t even mention Mr. Trump. Sometimes they even criticize his policies, such as Michigan Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers’ ad calling for an end to President Trump’s tariff war against Canada.

So at this moment, what’s the state of play for the House and the Senate? According to the latest CBS News House model, the Democrats are on pace to win 229 seats, giving them the majority.

    https://news-multimedia-1393112320.cos.ap-guangzhou.myqcloud.com/cbs-poll-house-estimate.jpg

    CBS News

As for the Senate, Salvanto said, “At the start of the year, there weren’t many folks who gave Democrats a chance to take the Senate. Well, what we’ve seen over time is that a lot of those red Republican states have in fact come into play. Doesn’t mean the Democrats are going to win them, but they certainly look to be more competitive.”

The idea that Texas and Kansas might elect Democratic Senators is definitely historic. Glasser said, “The last time that Democrats won a Senate seat in Kansas was in the 1930s. The last time a Democrat was elected to the U.S. Senate from Texas was Lloyd Bentsen in 1988.”

    What comes after the election?

So, if the Democrats win control of both houses of Congress, does that change anything? According to Susan Glasser, “I think you would see efforts to restrain the Defense Department from spending more money, for example on Trump’s war with Iran. I think you might see very aggressive oversight and investigation hearings. I think you’ll see them issue subpoenas.”

But Glasser has more immediate concerns about what happens after the elections: “Donald Trump said that he won’t accept the results of any election that he personally does not think were conducted the way he wanted them to be.”

Asked if she thinks the president might try to invalidate or interfere with the results, Glasser laughed: “I don’t think that’s a speculative question. Remember that Donald Trump is the only president in all of American history ever to refuse to accept his defeat in a legitimate election. One of the things that Trump and his allies might try to do is to delay or block certification of incoming members of the Senate in close races.”

Already, the Trump administration has ordered a criminal investigation into Alaska’s Senate race, where Democrats are alleged to have recruited a candidate with the same name as the Republican opponent.

But even if the ride is bumpy, the midterm elections – especially these midterm elections – are a critical part of the American system of government. “I think it’s absolutely a crucial midterm,” Glasser said. “This is what the system was built to do, to balance and to constrain and to check among the different branches of government. I think we’d be looking at very different paths for our country depending on the outcome on Tuesday night.”

In two days, Americans voting in the midterm elections will decide control of the U.S. House and Senate for the next two years.

Republicans are defending their slim congressional majorities, but President Donald Trump predicts the GOP will hold the House and Senate.

“If you elect a Republican House and a Republican Senate on November 3rd, we will continue to put America first every single day,” the president pledged on the campaign trail last week. And he claimed if the Democrats take control, “this country will go to hell.”

CHECK OUT THE FINAL FOX NEWS POWER RANKINGS IN THE MIDTERM ELECTIONS

Republicans are fighting political history, as the party in power in Washington has traditionally lost seats during midterm election years. The GOP also faces a challenging political climate fueled by persistent inflation tied in part to what polls show is an unpopular war with Iran and Trump’s increasingly negative approval ratings.

Also up for grabs in this year’s midterm elections — governorships in 36 of the 50 states (as well as the territories of Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands and the U.S. Virgin Islands). Plus, all but four states are holding legislative elections. And voters will also weigh in on 145 statewide ballot measures in states from coast to coast.

Here’s a closer look at what’s up for grabs on Election Day 2026.

    SENATE

Republicans currently control the chamber 53-47, with the final Fox News Power Rankings ahead of Election Day rating the race for Senate control a toss-up.

Both parties are three seats short of a majority, according to the forecast. Democrats are favored in 48 seats and Republicans are ahead in 47. The GOP needs to hold 50 seats to retain control of the chamber, since Republican Vice President JD Vance is the tie-breaking vote in the Senate.

If Democrats ride a blue wave to victory by winning most or all of the competitive races, they could potentially come away from the midterms with up to 54 seats. But if Republicans have a good night and defy expectations, the GOP could hold the majority with up to 52 seats, according to the forecast.

Republicans are playing defense in Alaska, Iowa, Maine, South Carolina and Texas, which are all rated toss-ups in the Power Rankings. They’re also defending seats in competitive races in Kansas, which is rated Lean Republican, and Ohio, which is rated Lean Democrat.

Democrats are on defense in Michigan, which is rated a toss-up, and in Minnesota and New Hampshire, which are listed as Lean Democrat.

    HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

The GOP is hanging on to a razor-thin majority in the House, and the Power Rankings point to the Democrats retaking control of the chamber.

A good night for the Democrats could see them ending up with as many as 240 seats in the 435-seat chamber. But if Republicans have a good night, they could end up with 212 seats. That’s six short of a majority, but enough to make life difficult for the next Democratic House Speaker, who would have to balance the demands of the moderate and far-left wings of the party.

The earliest-closing districts on election night will give some sense of the House’s future.

“Keep an eye on Kentucky’s 6th district, which covers Lexington and a large central area of the state. Trump here by 15 points in the last presidential election. Thanks to a combination of left-leaning college voters and farmers grappling with higher costs, it looks close this cycle,” Remy Numa, a Fox News contributor who steers the network’s Power Rankings, said.

    GOVERNORS

There are currently 26 Republican and 24 Democratic governors.

The Power Rankings list three states where the GOP controls the governor’s office – Alaska, Nevada, and Georgia – as toss-ups. Wisconsin, which has an open-Democratic controlled governor’s office, is also rated a toss up.

The gubernatorial races in red states Florida, Kansas, and Texas are rated Lean Republican, according to the Power Rankings.

Four other races are also seen as competitive and rated Lean Democrat. They are Arizona, Michigan, and Oregon, where Democrats are playing defense, and Iowa and Ohio, where the GOP is defending open governor’s offices.

    BALLOT MEASURES

Referendums requiring voters to present identification when they show up the polls, or bans on noncitizen voting, are on the ballot in 11 states: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Kansas, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, South Dakota and West Virginia.

Voters in Alaska will also decide if they want to repeal the state’s ranked choice voting system, open primaries and a campaign finance disclosure rule. Voters approve the current system in 2020 and narrowly kept it in 2024.

But the voting system has come under fresh scrutiny amid the controversy over a potential spoiler candidate in Alaska’s U.S. Senate race.

Voters in Virginia will decide whether the right to vote should be restored to convicted felons upon their release.

California’s Proposition 40 is making national headlines.

The measure, the first of its kind, would slap a one-time 5% tax on wealth for Californians worth over $1 billion, with the vast majority of the revenue generated going to pay for healthcare.

Also in the spotlight is millionaires tax in Washington State. If passed, the referendum would repeal a 9.9% tax on income over $1 million a year, which state lawmakers recently approved. Washington State currently does not have a personal income tax.

Voters in Maryland, Missouri, and Colorado weigh in on ballot measures on congressional redistricting, as the mid-decade redistricting fight between Democrats and Republicans will be waged again in 2028.

Arizona, Colorado, Nebraska, and Washington State have referendums on transgender students’ participation in sports. Colorado also has a referendum on blocking gender transition surgeries for minors and preventing state or federal funding from being used for those operations.

Voters in Missouri weigh in on repealing a right to abortion and banning gender transition medical care for children. Meanwhile, and Idaho initiative would overturn one of the nation’s strictest abortion bans, while Virginia and Nevada voters decide on establishing a right to abortion in their state constitutions.

California, Colorado, and Arizona hold ballot measures on policy around energy, transportation and development.

    https://news-multimedia-1393112320.cos.ap-guangzhou.myqcloud.com/paxton-talarico-montage.jpg

    https://news-multimedia-1393112320.cos.ap-guangzhou.myqcloud.com/matthew-watkins-sarah-adler-hartman-1280.jpg

The issue that could tip the scales in the Texas Senate race

    November 1, 2026 / 9:37 AM EST / CBS News

This year’s midterm elections in Texas are on track to cost a billion dollars, with more than half of it spent on the U.S. Senate campaign – what could be the most expensive non-presidential race in American history. But whatever the price tag, it’s certainly one of the most combative.

Republican State Attorney General Ken Paxton’s campaign bus displays a rally cry from the 19th century Texas revolution against Mexico: “Come and take it.” Paxton, whose government tenure has been marked by controversy, is President Trump’s hand-picked candidate. At a rally October 23, Paxton exhorted the crowd: “Do you believe in protecting Texas and stopping Sharia law? So do I. Do you believe that parents, not the government, should raise your children? So do I.”

In Texas, Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton and Democratic State Representative James Talarico are running for U.S. Senate. CBS News

Paxton’s opponent is a Presbyterian seminarian and former middle-school teacher, State Representative James Talarico. Going into Election Day, polls show the two locked in a tight race.

Talarico draws his campaign’s closing theme from the TV show about Texas high-school football, “Friday Night Lights.” He told a crowd in San Antonio Oct. 24, “To win this election, we have to execute. We have to leave it all on the field. We have to win.”

The issues in Texas mirror concerns across the country: high prices, immigration, government corruption, and the power of big tech and billionaires. As the song goes, “The eyes of Texas are upon you.” And now, all eyes are on Texas.

    “A big, messy, complicated election”

Sarah Adler Hartman and Matthew Watkins are the CEO and editor-in-chief of the Texas Tribune, a non-profit and non-partisan news organization. We invited them to the historic Salt Lick restaurant, just outside Austin, for some Hill Country barbecue, and a little politics.

    https://news-multimedia-1393112320.cos.ap-guangzhou.myqcloud.com/matthew-watkins-sarah-adler-hartman-1280.jpg

Matthew Watkins and Sarah Adler Hartman of the Texas Tribune. CBS News

Asked whether all the attention on Texas is inflating the egos of Texans to be the center of the political universe, Hartman replied, “Everything’s bigger in Texas!”

Hartman acknowledges that despite the popular image of Texas, the state has a growing Asian American population, a growing Latino population, and more people moving here from around the country.

“Texas is very different than the caricature that people paint of Texas from outside of the state,” she said, “and I think you see this, and you see some of the growing pains, the cognitive dissonance in this.”

Watkins noted, “There’s more Democratic voters in Texas than there are in Massachusetts. There’s traditionally Democratic voters in rural areas of the Rio Grande Valley who are very socially conservative. There’s, you know, really liberal white people in Austin. That’s how we get into a big, messy, complicated election like we’re in now.”

“These races are all about turnout”

Last weekend, “Sunday Morning” followed Paxton and Talarico as both stumped in and around San Antonio, and spoke to some of their supporters.

Paxton’s backers say the race is about what it means to be a true Texan. One man said of Democrats moving to the state, “They don’t understand. They’re bringing their point of views here, and it’s going to ruin it. It’ll be just like California if something doesn’t change.”

Another woman said she doesn’t see Talarico as a Democrat: “He is more for Communism and taking away the rights that we have been founded on in this country,” she said, adding he “alarms” her.

Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz has been on the trail campaigning for Paxton. “Look, this race is neck-and neck; it is a dead heat,” Cruz said. “These races are all about turnout. The left is going to show up. They hate Donald Trump. They’re going to show up. The question is, does everybody else? Do regular people come out and vote? If regular people come out and vote, we’ll win Texas and have a good election.”

“There are a lot more decent people”

Talarico supporters say GOP attacks on their candidate, over the border and transgender rights, are not working.

One woman doesn’t buy the argument that Latino voters in Texas are turned off by Talarico on cultural issues: “I mean, I’m Latina, so I’m Brown and proud,” she said. “I just voted this morning for James Talarico, so I am very excited to see, hopefully, the change that’s going to happen.”

That change won’t come easy. Conservative republicans have run Texas for decades. But some Democrats feel their time has come. One woman got emotional telling us, “I’m hoping that this election will see that there are decent people, there are a lot more decent people than there are corrupt and cruel people. It’s not about being Republican, it’s not about being Democrat right now. It is good versus evil.”

Congressman Joaquin Castro, a San Antonio Democrat, says economic concerns are paramount, even if the culture fights get the headlines. “Prices are so high, you know, people are really feeling it economically. They feel like they don’t have time for [cultural issue fights]. I mean, all these attacks on transgender or all this other culture stuff? It’s like, I can’t pay my bills, I can’t afford gas.

“Also, you know, James Talarico, he really is a generational talent,” Castro said. “I know you hear that. But he’s somebody who’s trying to unify people.”

Although diners back at the Salt Lick didn’t appear to give it much notice, rising costs – of beef and gas, and housing – could be the deciding factor here and nationwide.

“There are a lot of people nationwide who view Texas as sort of the beating heart of conservatism for the country,” said the Texas Tribune’s Matthew Watkins. “There are people on the right who say, ‘We can’t lose Texas or else we lose the country’; there are people who on the left who say, ‘Man, if we win Texas, like, this is a big deal.’ There’s this sort of psychological weight that is on it that makes people feel like, Okay, we can’t lose this, or, What if we win this? That is causing people to really take interest in this race”
