Blanche affirmed and said he has recused himself from future litigation or Justice Department business involving any of those suits. But Schiff countered that Blanche reportedly told a crowd at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) that there was no conflict of interest in the Justice Department firing prosecutors linked to Jan. 6 or other cases.

Blanche soon fired back when Schiff criticized him for moving to vacate Jan. 6-related convictions for 12 members of far-right groups.

“I was the acting attorney general – so yes, my department moved to dismiss,” he said, adding that there was no reason for him to recuse himself when Schiff pressed him further.

“There are rules that say when I have to recuse and that’s not one of them,” Blanche said.

“There are rules,” Schiff agreed. “And when you’re told to recuse yourself from investigations that you handle for the president…” — “I always do,” Blanche cut in – “you’re supposed to recuse yourself,” Schiff finished.

Schiff noted that the second volume of Special Counsel Jack Smith’s report on Trump has not been released and said the Justice Department has opposed making it available.

Blanche denied having anything to do with the decision and pointed out it is not the Justice Department, but a federal judge in Miami that has prohibited its release.

“If you went into court asking them to release it, it would be released by now,” Schiff argued.

Blanche shot back: “What you’re saying happens not to be true – I did not do that.”

“You can’t accuse me of violating my ethical rules and then lie about what I did,” he continued,

Schiff asked Blanche at length what allegedly evolved in his professional life that led him to be under such criticisms.

“What I don’t understand, Todd Blanche, is what happened to the Todd Blanche who was a prosecutor in the Southern District of New York? What happened to the prosecutor people had respect for,” he said.

“What happened to the prosecutor who said that there wouldn’t be a whiff of political partisanship and then prosecutes the president’s enemies over seashells cases, over making a video stating the plain law in the Constitution?” Schiff said – appearing to reference investigations into former FBI Director Jim Comey’s “8647” post that critics said amounted to a threat on Trump’s life.

“I think Robert Caro had it right when he said that power doesn’t corrupt as much as it reveals. I suspect it has just revealed who you are and who you are as someone willing to sacrifice everything you once believed in for that title, for that position of Attorney general,” Schiff claimed.

“I am still here. I am the same exact person I was when I was a federal prosecutor in the SDNY,” Blanche replied.

Americans think Trump won’t get a better Iran deal than Obama did, poll shows

As President Donald Trump has tried to sell the Iran war to a skeptical public, he has repeatedly returned to one particular talking point: that Barack Obama’s Iran nuclear deal was a disaster, and he’s going to produce something much better.

In fact, Trump has mentioned Obama’s nuclear deal more than three dozen times since the war began, according to a CNN review of Roll Call’s Factbase transcripts.

A new Washington Post-Ipsos poll has some very bad news for Trump on that front.

It finds just 23% of Americans think Trump will be able to unveil a better Iran deal than Obama did back in 2015. And 37% — a 14-point split — wagered that Trump would produce a worse deal.

Another 12% expected the deals to be “about the same,” while the rest didn’t offer a view.

Even among Republicans, only a little more than half (54%) thought Trump will bring about a better agreement.

And that came overwhelmingly from his most devoted backers: 70% of MAGA Republicans said Trump would produce a better deal. Non-MAGA Republicans were about evenly split; while 27% of them thought Trump would get a better accord, 23% thought Obama’s would be better.

Just 13% of independents thought the president would produce a better deal.

The finding in many ways epitomizes Trump’s failure to build the case for a war that’s becoming an increasing political liability.

How many of those people truly understand what was in the Obama nuclear deal inked in 2015, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)? It’s a fair question. Trump ripped that deal up nine years ago, and it was a very complicated agreement.

But that’s kind of beside the point.

For one, the JCPOA was pretty unpopular in real time. While some early polls showed people were open to it, a Pew Research Center poll in September 2015 showed Americans disapproved of it 49%-21%. By early 2016, a Gallup poll showed Americans disapproved of it 57%-30%.

That what Trump is pursuing inspires even less confidence is saying something.

Second, Trump has spent the last four and half months bashing that deal at every turn. He has routinely cast it as a complete sell-out to Iran that put the country on course to have a nuclear weapon.

“You know what the Iranians did?” Trump said a month ago alongside Egypt’s president. “They laughed at Obama and they said he’s a stupid son of a bitch.”

During a Monday appearance on Fox News, Trump called it “the worst agreement that has been signed by this country,” and even seemed to baselessly hint at something much more nefarious about Obama’s motivations for it.

Another key point: Few people think Trump will get a better deal even as he objectively invested much more in obtaining it. Trump went to war, costing more than a dozen American lives, quickly spending tens of billions of dollars and rocking the global economy. And there’s still no end in sight for the war, given Iran’s takeover of the Strait of Hormuz has created a huge problem that didn’t exist pre-war.

Yet the American people seem to prefer the agreement that Obama was able to strike using only diplomatic efforts.

In some ways, the finding isn’t surprising. Previous polls have shown around two-thirds of Americans don’t think the war will actually do much to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon — despite Trump saying his goal was to prevent that outcome forevermore.

And the new poll also suggests that, if anything, Trump’s political problem in Iran has gotten worse. The Post-Ipsos poll indicates 68% of Americans said the Iran war wasn’t worth fighting, which is more than ever said that for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Trump’s disapproval on Iran is now up to 69% as the midterm election tick ever closer.

But the new poll distills the crux of his problem: Based on the precise standard Trump has set for himself, the war seems like a failure.

Lower gasoline prices hold back US retail sales, underlying momentum remains

WASHINGTON, July 16 (Reuters) – U.S. retail sales increased marginally in June as lower gasoline prices depressed receipts at service stations, but households boosted purchases of motor vehicles and spent more at online outlets, reinforcing economists’ views that consumer spending accelerated in the second quarter.

The economy’s resilience was highlighted by other data on Thursday showing labor market stability, with first-time applications for unemployment benefits dropping to a two-month low last week. The data did not impact views on near-term monetary policy, with economists expecting the Federal Reserve to keep interest rates unchanged later this month.

“Despite challenges, consumers are still spending and the labor market shows no signs of cracking,” said Ellen Zentner, chief economic strategist at Morgan Stanley Wealth Management. “This type of data won’t move the Fed’s needle either way, but it underscores the ongoing resilience of the U.S. economy.”

Retail sales rose 0.2% last month, the smallest gain in five months, after an upwardly revised 1.0% jump in May, the Commerce Department’s Census Bureau said. The increase in retail sales, which are mostly goods and are not adjusted for inflation, was in line with economists’ expectations and followed a previously reported 0.9% advance in May.

Sales rose 6.7% year-on-year in June, despite household budgets being strained by higher prices from import tariffs and more recently the Middle East conflict. Spending continues to be driven by higher-income households, which have seen their wealth boosted by a stock market rally.

Generous tax refunds this year have provided a cushion and consumers have also been tapping into savings and seeking bargains.

The Federal Reserve’s Beige Book report on Wednesday described consumer spending as having edged up in early July, adding that “several districts noted declines in spending on discretionary items or trading down to more affordable varieties.”

Receipts at service stations dropped 5.3% last month after increasing 2.6% in May. Average gasoline prices fell to $4.18 a gallon last month from $4.61 in May, data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration showed.

The modest relief at the pump, which reflected a retreat in oil prices as a shaky ceasefire between the United States and Iran took hold, freed money for spending elsewhere. But the truce collapsed last week and the renewed hostilities in the Middle East have sent oil and gasoline prices rising again.

Receipts at auto dealerships increased 1.9%. Sales at nonstore retailers surged 1.9%, boosted by Amazon’s Prime Day event. Other retailers also offered competing promotions. Electronics and appliance store sales increased 0.8%.

Receipts at sporting goods, hobby, musical instrument and book stores jumped 1.3%, likely boosted by the FIFA World Cup tournament. But sales at food services and drinking places, the only services category in the report, rose only 0.1%.

Sales at building material and garden equipment outlets edged up 0.1%, while receipts at furniture stores were flat. Health and personal care store sales dropped 0.8%. There were also decreases in receipts at clothing, and food and beverage retailers. These declines could reflect price cuts by retailers eager to attract customers or falling demand as consumers resist higher prices.

U.S. stocks opened lower. The dollar edged up against a basket of currencies. U.S. Treasury yields were higher.

LABOR MARKET STABLE

Retail sales excluding automobiles, gasoline, building materials and food services increased 0.5% in June after an upwardly revised 0.8% rise in May. These so-called core retail sales correspond most closely with the consumer spending component of gross domestic product, and were previously reported to have advanced 0.7% in May.

Economists expect consumer spending, which accounts for more than two-thirds of the economy, picked up in the second quarter after almost stalling in the January-March quarter. The Atlanta Fed’s model is currently forecasting GDP growth at a 1.3% annualized rate in the April-June quarter. The economy grew at a 2.1% pace in the first quarter.

A separate report from the Labor Department showed initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 8,000 to a seasonally adjusted 208,000 for the week ended July 11, the lowest level since May. Economists had forecast 217,000 claims for the latest week.

Claims have retreated after surging at the end of May and staying elevated through mid-June. Some of the recent decline likely reflected big automakers, like General Motors and Ford, foregoing the traditional summer assembly plant shutdowns for retooling and maintenance.

Claims are at levels that economists say are consistent with what they call a “slow hire, slow fire” labor market.

The number of people receiving unemployment benefits after an initial week of aid, a proxy for hiring, fell 16,000 to a seasonally adjusted 1.805 million during the week ended July 4, the claims report showed.

Facing what Secretary of State Marco Rubio will describe as a “resurgence” of “far left political terrorism,” according to a State Department official, Rubio will convene diplomats from around the world in Washington on Thursday to discuss a response.

It is a key priority of the Trump administration, which has argued in its counterterrorism strategy that “violent left-wing extremists, including anarchists and anti-fascists” are foremost terrorist threat to the United States, alongside cartels and “legacy Islamist terrorists.”

However, multiple former officials said the issue has been politicized by the administration and that the threat from the “far-left” does not rise to the level of that posed by groups like ISIS or by far-right extremists. The latter was absent entirely from the administration’s counterterrorism strategy released in May.

Thursday’s ministerial, according to the State Department, is meant to “expand coordination, enhance information sharing, and strengthen international law enforcement mechanisms to counter the threat” that it says has “remained a blind spot in the international community’s counterterrorism focus.”

A senior State Department official said 65 country delegations are slated to attend the event from “across the Western Hemisphere, Asia, Europe, and beyond.”

According to sources, many of the delegations will not be led by the foreign ministers of the countries, but rather more working-level and technical officials. Several cited scheduling, with invitations to the event only being issued at the beginning of July.

Countries that had worked with the administration on the topic were among those invited, the official said, noting they’ve had “very productive engagements with Germany, with Greece, with Italy, and that’s often where the problem is most pronounced in Europe.”

In his speech, Rubio plans to describe left-wing terrorism as “the result of a unique evil rooted in a deep resentment towards civilization,” according to the State Department official. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller are also expected to participate.

The threat of left-wing terrorism “has not really been addressed collectively in an effective way,” the senior State Department official said. According to the official, partners have said they “have a handle” on other forms of political violence but “this one is more difficult for us.”

The senior official cited attacks by members of European Antifa groups, which the administration designated as terrorists last November, as examples of far-left terrorist actions. They did not provide examples from other parts of the world but said they are focused on “violent criminal terrorist acts,” when asked if a leftist protest would be considered a form of far-left terrorism.

However, former officials said the ministerial appears to be a part of the administration’s broader effort to amplify the threat and target those on the political left who oppose Trump’s policies. Several who spoke with CNN said that the reality of the threat from far-left extremists does not match the administration’s portrayal.

“We looked at terrorism of all stripes, including left-wing terrorism, but the reality and the data, both here domestically and abroad, indicate that left-wing extremism is not and has not been the type of threat or the degree of threat that far-right terrorism or extremist violence or jihadist violence have posed,” said Ian Moss, the former deputy coordinator for counterterrorism at the State Department under the Biden administration.

Moss, now an attorney with Jenner & Block, noted that there are “other forms of violent ideological extremism, Islamist violence for starters, and then certainly violent right-wing extremists or White identity terrorists, which are a real risk, a real concern domestically and internationally, and one that the administration seems to have not focused on.”

Michael Duffin, a former senior counterterrorism adviser at the State Department, said that “never” in his nine years of working on counterterrorism “had so-called left-wing extremism risen” to a level warranting such high-level focus.

“There’s no violent extremist element, organizational element on the left, that would the expenditure of these resources,” he told CNN. Duffin was among many State Department officials who worked on counterterrorism who were fired last year as part of the administration’s mass firings and overhaul of the department.

Throughout President Donald Trump’s second term, his administration has also ramped up domestic pressure against alleged far-left extremists.

Trump designated the anti-fascist movement Antifa as a so-called “domestic terrorist organization.” Despite claims that Antifa is a top concern domestically, law enforcement agencies have struggled to define the amorphous group, its size, locations of chapters and other basic information.

中国疾控中心：全国冠病疫情总体上仍处于低流行水平

中国6月的冠病疫情升温，但中国疾控中心星期四（7月16日）称，全国冠病疫情总体仍处于低流行水平，现有监测也未发现可能构成额外公共卫生风险的新变异株。

综合澎湃新闻和新黄河报道，中国国家疾病预防控制局星期四举行新闻发布会。中国疾控中心（中国预防医学科学院）传染病处研究员常昭瑞在会上说，中国冠病疫情自去年10月以来，连续八个半月维持在流行间期水平，病毒活跃度低。

不过，她称今年5月下旬疫情有所抬头，6月中旬进入低流行水平。近期全国哨点医院冠病病毒检测阳性率有所上升。

常昭瑞进一步说，虽然疫情呈上升趋势，但总体上仍处于低流行水平，中国主要的流行株仍为NB1.8.1系列的变异株。

常昭瑞强调，现有监测显示，没有发现可能构成额外公共卫生风险的新变异株。

美团买药数据显示，7月6日至13日，流感、冠病相关药品需求持续上涨，全国范围内冠病用药需求周环比增长32%。

中国疾控中心上星期三（7月8日）在官网发布的6月全国冠病疫情数据显示，全国31个省区市及新疆生产建设兵团报告新增确诊病例7万9000例，包括130起重症病例、一起死亡病例（基础疾病合并冠病病毒感染死亡），报告病例数总体呈上升趋势。

中国据悉进一步收紧银行间城投债发行

中国银行间市场交易商协会据悉进一步收紧对部分城投的发债审核，此举料将加剧弱资质城投的债务再融资压力。

据彭博社报道，知情人士透露，协会对部分承销商给予窗口指导，城投发行人债务融资工具以2023年3月31日余额为上限，若余额超出，发行人将不能在银行间市场发行新债。

上述知情人士不愿具名，因未获授权公开评论。银行间市场交易商协会是中国银行间市场的自律组织。

报道称，随着10年化债进入收尾阶段，监管层近期正通过一系列举措以管控高成本融资，以及遏制地方融资平台过度举债行为。上周协会要求部分银行避免承销两年期以内的短期债券，叠加本次新规，弱资质城投的银行间市场债务置换压力可能进一步上升。

除上述措施外，国家发改委近期还要求一些中资投行，不要承销收益率高于4%的离岸人民币债券及收益率高于5%的美元债券，以降低高成本借款及过度举债融资，尤其是针对地方政府融资平台。

彭博汇总数据显示，中国地方融资平台整体有16万亿元（人民币，约3万亿新元）存续债券，目前有约5万亿元债券将在2027年底前到期，其中银行间市场约占52.7%。
