White House restores page listing financial disclosures after CBS News inquiry

Washington — The White House’s page listing financial disclosure forms for President Trump and top White House officials went offline without explanation Friday afternoon, only to be restored after CBS News inquired about its removal.

The page,whitehouse.gov/disclosures, serves as a hub for various disclosures required by law, including the president’s annual financial disclosure form and periodic stock transaction reports. It includes financial records for the president, vice president and more than 100 White House staffers, including Susie Wiles and Stephen Miller.

CBS News uses an automated system to monitor ethics disclosures across the government, including those posted on the White House page. The system checks for new filings every 30 minutes. The White House hub was still operational as of 3:01 p.m. Friday, but returned a 404 error at the next routine check at 3:31 p.m., indicating it had been taken down. The disclosure documents themselves were still online.

At 4:20 p.m., CBS News asked the White House press office in an email whether the page had been intentionally removed or whether it was down due to a technical error. CBS News requested a response by 5 p.m. The White House did not reply.

As CBS News prepared a story on the page’s removal, the automated ethics monitor flagged that it was back online, having been restored sometime between 4:31 and 5:01 p.m. The publish time in the source code of the White House page was 22:00:00+00:00, or 5:00:00 p.m. ET.

The White House did not respond to a request for clarification about why the page went down or why it was restored.

When the page came back online, there was [one new file] listed: a report on the president’s stock trades that he signed on Sept. 17. That same report has been [publicly available] on the website of an agency known as the Office of Government Ethics since Oct. 8. Data from the White House server show it was uploaded at 3:14 p.m. The White House has previously posted stock reports within a few days from when they were posted on OGE’s site.

The financial disclosures listed on the page are required to be filed under the Ethics in Government Act of 1978, and the periodic stock reports under the 2012 STOCK Act. The president and vice president file their reports with OGE, and copies of reports from top-ranking White House aides and Senate-confirmed officials are also sent to the agency.

But other White House staffers’ reports stay with the White House, and many of their reports have not appeared on OGE’s website. In September, CBS News found that more than 110 of the roughly 180 officials listed on the White House page did not appear in OGE’s online records.

The president’s financial disclosures have[revealed] thousands of stock transactions his accounts have made since the beginning of the year, including many involving companies that have had business before the government or are directly impacted by his policies. The White House has said the president is not involved in managing his portfolio and that his money is handled by outside financial advisers.

President Donald Trump has named Stephen Miller his new White House chief of staff, calling him one of his “most trusted advisors.”

Miller will ascend to the role on Monday, officially replacing Susie Wiles, who Trump said will be moving to his political operation.

“I want to thank her for her service as Chief of Staff —She has done a great job!” Trump wrote.

Moments after Trump’s announcement, Wiles issued a statement of her own.

“Today is my last day as White House Chief of Staff,” Wiles said.

“Serving President Trump in the White House has been the honor of a lifetime. I’m so proud to have been a part of what we’ve accomplished together from securing our border and cutting taxes to strengthening our economy and putting America First,” she added. “More than anything, I’m grateful for the extraordinary people I’ve had the privilege of working alongside. While my role may be changing, my commitment to the President and the mission never will.”

John Eisenberg, the head of the National Security Division at the Department of Justice, is stepping down from his post, becoming the third senior DOJ official to resign since the midterm elections.

Shortly after Fox News learned of Eisenberg’s resignation, Attorney General Todd Blanche announced it on social media.

“He has served with distinction, strengthening our nation’s ability to address threats, both foreign and domestic,” Blanche said. “Under his leadership, the Division advanced President Trump’s mission to make America safe by prosecuting terrorists and working with our law enforcement partners to disrupt planned attacks on the American people.”

This was Eisenberg’s second stint serving under President Donald Trump. In Trump’s first term, Eisenberg was an assistant and deputy counsel to the president, as well as a legal advisor to the National Security Council, which advises presidents on foreign policy matters.

DOJ CIVIL RIGHTS CHIEF HARMEET DHILLON RESIGNS, SAYS WHITE HOUSE ASKED HER TO WAIT UNTIL AFTER MIDTERMS

Less than an hour before Eisenberg’s departure was made public, Blanche announced the resignation of Jason Reding Quiñones, the U.S. Attorney for Florida’s Southern District.

Quiñones was perhaps best known for securing an indictment against Raúl Castro, the former president of Cuba who took over after his brother Fidel Castro’s nearly 50-year reign.

Raúl Castro, now 95, was indicted for his alleged role in the 1996 shoot-down of two unarmed civilian aircraft operated by Brothers to the Rescue, a Miami-based humanitarian group that searched the Florida Straits for Cuban migrants in distress. The four U.S. nationals aboard the two planes were killed.

“We are grateful for Jason’s leadership in combatting violent crime, drug trafficking, sex trafficking, and transnational crime,” Blanche said. “Jason has served the Department multiple times over his distinguished career, and we thank him for his service to this country.”

DOJ LAUNCHES CRIMINAL PROBE INTO SUPREME COURT LEAK THAT EXPOSED RULING OVERTURNING ROE V WADE

The departure of Eisenberg and Quiñones came just a day after Harmeet Dhillon, who headed up the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division, announced she’d be leaving as well.

In an interview with Fox News Digital, Dhillon said she attempted to resign three weeks ago but was asked by White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles to stay until after the midterms.

Dhillon moved to Washington following the deaths of her husband and father to “serve my country,” but after roughly two years in the administration, she said it was time for her to leave.

Dhillon shifted her office’s priorities toward issues including DEI and race-conscious policies, religious discrimination, transgender participation in women’s sports, Second Amendment rights and election integrity.

In the lead-up to the midterms, Dhillon defended the Trump administration’s investigation into noncitizen voters. She was also in charge of the DOJ’s effort to send more than 1,000 election monitors to all 50 states.

Russia secretly bolstered Iran’s missile arsenal before war with US, records uncover

Internal defense records show shipments from late 2024 through December 2025 as Trump downplayed Moscow’s role

Russia played a larger role in the Iran war than previously disclosed, with internal defense industry documents revealing how Moscow built up the country’s arsenal ahead of its conflict with the U.S.

A Russian contract is tied to 90 launchers for precision-guided missiles with the destination as Tehran, according to documents obtained and published by Ukrainian defense intelligence research group Dallas Analytics offering new details on the extent of Moscow’s military support for Iran before war erupted.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly downplayed Russia’s role in the conflict — as recently as last month, saying that he did not believe they are helping Iran “at all.”

Russian production records show components were allocated for 90 APU-L twin-rail launchers under a contract identified as “K-10,” with shipments within the Russian production chain scheduled from late 2024 through December 2025.

Other internal Russian documents obtained by Dallas Analytics explicitly identify “K-10” as Iran. An October 2022 supply request for equipment for a Yak-130 aircraft lists the consignee as “‘K10’ Iran” and was countersigned by the acting head of the Russian Defense Ministry’s 704th Military Representation.

The K-10 designation can also be traced to Russian military hardware that ultimately reached Iran. An internal Russian production schedule listed six Yak-130 aircraft for a consignee identified as K-10. Iranian state media later showed the aircraft entering service in September 2023, and Dallas Analytics said the tail number of one Iranian Yak-130 matched the number listed for K-10 in the Russian factory records.

The APU-L launchers are designed to carry Russia’s LMUR, a precision-guided missile also known as Product 305 or the Kh-39. The roughly 230-pound missile carries a 55-pound warhead and can be guided in flight by an operator using an electro-optical seeker and two-way radio link.

FOREIGN LEADER ON PUTIN’S DOORSTEP SOUNDS ALARM OVER IRAN FUELING MOSCOW’S WAR MACHINE

Iran had already publicly announced plans to acquire Russian Mi-28 attack helicopters, one of the platforms capable of carrying the weapon. The first export-variant Mi-28NE helicopters were photographed in Iran in January 2026.

The paperwork also shows involvement by Russia’s Defense Ministry. A May 2024 letter accompanying the K-10 production schedule was co-signed by the head of the ministry’s 123rd Military Representation.

The documents do not establish whether the completed launchers ultimately reached Iran, though Dallas Analytics told Fox News Digital the contract itself is “a very strong proof” of the transfer.

The findings add new detail to a military relationship the Trump administration has repeatedly played down during the war. U.S. intelligence has assessed that Russia provided Iran with information on the location of American military assets and, more recently, satellite imagery and weapons components, according to reports.

But administration officials have said that support has not materially affected the U.S. campaign.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Russian assistance was not impeding U.S. military operations, while Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has said the U.S. was tracking Moscow’s support and accounting for it in its battle plans.

The Trump administration has separately sought to disrupt Iran’s foreign weapons procurement as Tehran works to rebuild its military capabilities.

The Treasury Department has targeted networks it says helped Iran seek weapons and components abroad, including efforts to acquire Chinese-made man-portable air-defense systems.

Just this week, the State Department sanctioned a Russia-based individual it said was involved in efforts to help Iran procure Chinese-made man-portable air-defense systems, or MANPADS.

Just one week after pulling off a surprise victory over incumbent Republican Rep. Tim Moore in North Carolina’s 14th Congressional District race, Democrat LaKesha Womack is set to appear in court on a pending felony charge.

Womack secured 51.1% of the vote in the House race, while Moore received 48.9%, according to election results reported by The Associated Press.

The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office previously confirmed to Fox News Digital that Womack had been served a criminal summons on Oct. 11 by a deputy with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office on a pending felony charge alleging she failed to return a rental vehicle valued at $20,000 in 2019.

The criminal summons was issued in January 2020 but not served until 2026, according to WBTV. Womack is set to appear in court on Nov. 10, The New York Post reported Thursday.

Womack previously acknowledged failing to return the rental car on time, saying she was experiencing homelessness at the time and was unaware that a criminal case had been filed against her.

When asked about facing the felony charge on Friday, Womack declined to comment to Fox News Digital.

Under North Carolina law, the charge is a Class H felony that can carry a prison sentence exceeding two years, depending on the defendant’s criminal history and other sentencing factors.

Under House rules, members formally charged with a felony punishable by two or more years in prison are expected to step aside from committee assignments and party leadership positions while the charges remain pending, a provision that could become relevant to Womack once she takes office in January.

Moore’s campaign did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

“My opponent needs to explain these pending felony charges to the voters of North Carolina District 14,” Moore wrote in an Oct. 28 post on X. “With a court date literally the week after the election this is a big deal.”

On a night when Democrats made major gains across the country, South Dakota emerged as one of the few Republican strongholds where the GOP largely held its ground — even as Democrats made inroads around Sioux Falls.

Republican Gov. Larry Rhoden won roughly 63.5% of the vote Tuesday, nearly matching President Donald Trump’s 63.4% performance in 2024. Republicans also swept the state’s other statewide races and maintained overwhelming control of the legislature, despite Democrats picking up four seats.

Rhoden’s victory came against Democrat Dan Ahlers, who described himself as a “conservative Democrat” and campaigned on affordability, rural healthcare, education and other kitchen table issues. But his moderate pitch did little to narrow the GOP’s commanding statewide advantage, with Ahlers finishing at just 36.5% of the vote.

South Dakota’s results stood in contrast to several other deeply Republican states where the GOP maintained control but saw its margins shrink considerably. In Idaho and Wyoming, Republican gubernatorial candidates won comfortably but finished with smaller shares of the vote than President Donald Trump secured in 2024. South Dakota’s gubernatorial result, by comparison, remained virtually unchanged.

David Jolly, the Democratic nominee in Florida, ran a campaign with similar themes to Ahlers’ — pointing to the fact that he used to be a Republican and, like Ahlers, prioritized affordability and healthcare while on the campaign trail. Jolly cut the GOP’s vote share to just 50%, roughly six points below the party’s 2024 presidential performance. Tennessee’s Democratic gubernatorial nominee inflicted a similarly sharp cut on Republicans’ margins by employing a similar strategy.

Even down the ballot, South Dakota Republicans largely held their ground, though Democrats managed to flip four legislative seats in the Sioux Falls area, marking their first legislative gains in the state since 2008.

The losses were concentrated around the state’s largest city, where a growing population and a less conservative political landscape have created more opportunities for Democrats, according to University of South Dakota political scientist Julia Hellwege. Opposition to large data-center projects also resonated with some voters in the area, according to a local Democratic official.

“South Dakota Republicans did well because we took on the issues that mattered to the people of our state and delivered real results for them,” South Dakota’s Republican House speaker, Jon Hansen, told Fox News Digital. “The bottom line is that we ran on tackling the issues that mattered to people, and then we delivered real results for the people on those issues. Not just talk, not just excuses, but real solutions. It’s what our people deserve, and it’s what we delivered for them.”

Hansen pointed to property tax cuts enacted by the legislature, regulations aimed at preventing utility costs from rising amid data center build-outs, curbing corporate eminent domain and balancing the state’s budget, among other efforts, as crucial in the South Dakota GOP’s success on Tuesday night.

South Dakota’s unemployment rate has been hovering around 2% since last September, roughly half the rate of the United States at large. Average wages also increased by about 4% in the state over the course of 2025. All of this occurred as South Dakota remained one of the most affordable states in the country, though rising rent costs outpaced wage growth in 2025, according to data collected by Realtor.com.

At the federal level, Republican Sen. Mike Rounds cruised to victory with 60.5% of the vote, though the GOP wasn’t entirely immune to the national shift. South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley won the state’s at-large congressional seat with roughly 64% of the vote, down from the 72% fellow Republican Dusty Johnson secured in 2024.

South Dakota’s relatively modest legislative losses stood in sharp contrast to other Republican strongholds. In Texas, Democrats flipped 21 GOP-held state House seats, while Republicans in New Hampshire were on track to fall from the 222 House seats they won in 2024 to just 107.

“Those Republicans who lost on Nov. 3 did so because their actions (or inaction) didn’t match their promises to voters. We didn’t have that problem in South Dakota under our leadership,” South Dakota’s GOP House Majority Leader, Rep. Scott Odenbach, told Fox News Digital.

Top lawyer in DOJ’s National Security Division abruptly resigns

John Eisenberg, the Justice Department’s National Security Division assistant attorney general, abruptly resigned on Friday, the department said.

Attorney General Todd Blanche announced Eisenberg’s departure on X, thanking him for “strengthening our nation’s ability to address threats, both foreign and domestic.”

Eisenberg is the second assistant attorney general this week to step down, just two days after Democrats swept the midterm elections and won back control of the House of Representatives and Senate.

On Thursday, Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division Harmeet Dhillon also tendered her resignation, though she had already told the White House before the election that she intended to step down.

Another Trump-appointee at the Justice Department, U.S. Attorney Jason Reding Quiñones of the Southern District of Florida, also resigned on Friday.

Eisenberg, unlike Dhillon, maintained a relatively low profile during his tenure at the National Security Division, which over the last year has lost a large number of its career staff.

The division was thrust into the uncomfortable role late last year of overseeing the redactions of millions of pages of investigative files related to accused sex-trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, a monumental task that was mandated by Congress amid mounting pressure to publish the files.

The assignment was later expanded to enlist help from other parts of the Justice Department, including the FBI, the Criminal Division and the U.S. Attorney’s office in Manhattan, which collectively detailed 400 attorneys to review approximately 5.2 million pages.

The redactions have since come under withering criticism, with many of Epstein’s victims complaining that their names and personal details were inadvertently publicly released. Members of Congress also accused the Justice Department of improperly redacting information about possible unindicted co-conspirators.

Created several years after the 9/11 terror attacks, the National Security Division is in charge of managing the Justice Department’s counterterrorism and counterintelligence work, export control enforcement and reviewing foreign investments in U.S. companies.

Many types of national security cases brought by U.S. attorney’s offices around the country require consultation and sometimes approval by the National Security Division.

Since President Trump took office in January, the National Security Division has played a role in some of the highest-profile cases, including major leak investigations that have targeted journalists such as Washington Post reporter Hannah Natanson, whose home was raided earlier this year as part of an Espionage Act investigation into a government contractor.

The division has also been at the heart of sweeping changes to domestic terrorism investigations initiated by then-Attorney General Pam Bondi last year.

In December, Bondi ordered law enforcement agencies and federal prosecutors to prioritize efforts to investigate and prosecute groups and individuals who belong to the anti-fascist antifa movement or are deemed “extremist.”

Her memo broadened the scope of the kinds of crimes that might be pursued as domestic terrorism cases, such as doxxing members of law enforcement or parading with the intent to obstruct the administration of justice.

The National Security Division was involved this year in bringing the first-ever case before the Alien Terrorist Removal Court, a decades-old, secretive federal immigration court that uses classified evidence to deport suspected “alien terrorists,” even if they have never been charged with a crime.

But before the court could test the constitutional limits of the case, the target in the case — Nazira Haji Zada — agreed to be deported to her native Afghanistan rather than contest the government’s allegations that she was an “alien terrorist.”

Several prominent Democrats who ran on an “affordability” message were largely silent when pressed by Fox News Digital on their sudden pivot to foreshadowing investigations into the Trump administration, including in many cases its immigration enforcement efforts.

Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Calif., who is poised to lead the House Oversight Committee, responded to Democrats’ win Tuesday with a statement: “Lawyer Up”, despite having pledged to prioritize household costs alongside government accountability.

Garcia told CNN before the election that “Democratic priorities” would be lowering the cost of “gas, groceries, the mortgage, the rent,” alongside combating government corruption.

In response to a request for comment, a representative for Garcia shared a tweet he posted Wednesday, after his Tuesday “lawyer up” warning, that referenced affordability:

“People can’t afford gas, groceries, and rent because Donald Trump and his family are ripping off the American people and enriching themselves. Taking on corruption is about making life more affordable for working families,” Garcia said in the tweet.

Before the election, “Squad” Rep. Delia Ramirez, D-Ill., wrote in a PBS-Chicago voters guide that there is “no question that the rising cost of living is the number one issue” for a “working people’s agenda”.

After the election, however, her tone appeared to change:

“Noem, Markwayne, Miller, Homan, Bovino, what’s up? Clear your schedule,” Ramirez said.

Several respondents pushed back, including one of her stated targets, former Border Patrol Cmdr. Gregory Bovino.

“Honey, slow your totalitarian roll,” Bovino responded on X. “Citizens don’t answer to communists in this country as much as you seem to believe that.”

Bovino went on to suggest Ramirez instead relax with a bottle of whiskey from a brand the former immigration official launched upon retirement.

Other respondents also pointed out that Ramirez’ post-election missive didn’t mention her affordability priority:

“Notice nothing about how she is going to help her constituents but ‘get Trump’,” said one.

“So, you guys never really gave a s— about affordability,” added former Energy Department staffer Matt van Swol.

Rep. Analilia Mejia, D-N.J., who now represents the longtime Republican-held seat of former Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen, made both affordability and immigration policy part of her campaign message.

“We’re going to toss out subpoenas like Mardi Gras beads,” Mejia’s first X post Wednesday read.

Rep. Tony Wied, R-Wis., responded it showed Democrats “have no plans to make life better for you,” eliciting a response from Mejia in which she dubbed him “Mr. Weird” and only then mentioned an “economy that works for” Americans.

In April, Rep. Yassamin Ansari, D-Ariz., released a lengthy statement announcing a “New Affordability Agenda” and highlighting her role on the Congressional Progressive Caucus’ “Lowering Costs Task Force.”

On Election Night, Ansari posted: “Thank you Mr. President. Our thank-you will come in January with subpoenas.” An ensuing tweet called for the impeachment of War Secretary Pete Hegseth.

On Wednesday, Ansari ultimately posted a policy-related pledge to curtail AI.

Sen. Edward Markey, D-Mass., stated during the midterms that his priorities were “groceries, gas prices energy costs” and the like.

However, his post-election missive remarking on how many “new forests” will need planting for “all of the subpoenas we’ll be printing,” instead signaled a priority to investigate tech executives like Elon Musk.

“Affordability,” quipped former Virginia Del. Nick Freitas, R-Culpeper, in a reply.

Ramirez, Mejia, Markey and Ansari did not respond to requests for comment on their apparent pivots. Garcia’s representative responded by providing his subsequent post on affordability. Both Garcia and Ramirez had previously identified government accountability and immigration oversight, respectively, as priorities, but their immediate post-election statements emphasized investigations rather than the affordability measures they had highlighted on the campaign trail.

DHS appeared to take the newfound priority in stride in comments to Fox News Digital.

“It is unfortunate that Democrats are more interested in political shenanigans than in governing,” said DHS’ top attorney James Percival.

“Rest assured, however, that we are well prepared to deal with this nonsense so Secretary Mullin can continue focusing on protecting the homeland,” the counsel said.

A Justice Department spokesperson echoed Percival, saying the agency is “not afraid of threats from Democrats” and assured its staff has followed the law.

“It is no surprise that rather than focus on bringing down costs for Americans, Democrats in Congress are picking up where their weaponization efforts left off when they were last in power,” the spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, the White House told Fox News Digital that Trump remains willing to work with Democrats on issues they can collaborate on to help “hardworking Americans.”

“If Democrats choose to pursue sham investigations and radical-left policies, they are choosing to work against the American people,” spokeswoman Lauren Bis said.

Immigration hawks signaled preparations for what Democrats foreshadowed.

The Mass Deportation Coalition, whose leaders have been critical of Biden-era open-border policies and have asserted that the Trump administration has not done enough on the issue in some areas, told Fox News Digital they are prepared to defend officials amid the onslaught.

“We know what’s coming,” said Mass Deportation Coalition leader Mike Howell. “A lot of people are going to be cashing-out and charging patriots expensive legal fees to the most vulnerable.”

“We have been through this before and are ready to sacrifice for the patriots who are targeted by weaponized harassment.”

Former House Oversight Committee counsel and immigration judge Andrew Arthur said Congress has the prerogative to investigate DHS’ work but added that it may not be what Americans are looking for as a priority.

Citing Ramirez’ mention of Border Czar Tom Homan, Arthur noted that the onetime Obama official long held “positive” ratings from Republicans and Democrats.

“He was commonly viewed as the guy who came in and cleaned things up after Noem left, got things a little bit better. So that’s probably not going to be a terribly popular thing,” he said.

“This isn’t really affordability but anything that shows waste in government technically goes to affordability and it all depends on how willing the media is to accept that talking point,” said Arthur, now at the Center for Immigration Studies.

Arthur said DHS can largely proceed as usual with its previously established funding while any investigations take place, adding that much of what Mullin and Trump have done already falls under established law that Congress itself passed.

Referencing the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952, Arthur said that, short of “amending the law itself – which they can’t do if [Trump] vetoes it” Democrats can probe and try to paint the agency in a “bad light” over ICE-involved shootings and similar incidents, but that their larger agenda would be buttressed by the INA.

A 2026 whitepaper by Federal Reserve Bank researchers found elevated “unauthorized” immigration contributed to rising housing costs between 2021 and 2024, estimating that the influx increased home prices by 6.6% and rents by 4.3% in the average metropolitan area.

AI data center backlash fuels votes for change and sharp stock market swings

Concern over AI and misgivings about data center construction helped drive votes for change in the midterm election — and have fueled stock market volatilitythat experts say is likely to continue.

Investors are worried that the political shift in Congress could slow the buildout of data centersthat power AI, potentially throttling one of the economy’s main growth engines.

Voters on Tuesday passed at least 44 of 47 measures proposed across the country to restrict data centers — from outright bans to temporary moratoriums — with a few still pending.

The election also elevated a number of candidates who made stricter regulation of data centers a key part of their campaigns. They include Texas Gov.-elect Gina Hinojosa, who beat Republican incumbent Greg Abbott and who has promised to halt the construction of new data centers until more safeguards are in place.

“What has happened is data centers have moved into mostly rural communities and there are no rules to protect Texas,” Hinojosa told CNN’s Jake Tapper on Thursday. “We need to stop what we are doing with data centers until we have those protections.”

Texas, which did not have a measure on its ballot on Tuesday, has become one of the leaders in the data center market — accounting for 25% to 30% of the data center capacity expected to come online by 2030.

The state has 169 operational data centers, with 118 under construction and more than 500 planned for the future. Big tech companies like Meta, Google and Microsoft have announced major data center projects in the state over the last two years.

In Georgia, Democratic Gov.-elect Keisha Lance Bottoms told “CBS Mornings” on Wednesday that she would sign an executive order to pause new data center construction once she gets into office in January.

“A lot of data centers are being built in Georgia because of the incentives that have been attached to those data centers,” she said. “So, of course, we’re going to have to take a look at what those agreements entail.”

Stock market swings

Stocks rebounded on Friday morning after plunging on Thursday, a drop that put the tech-heavy Nasdaq intocorrectionand wiped out post-election gains.

Joe Maher, a markets economist with Capital Economics, said in a report Thursday that it remains to be seen if the midterm’s shock to the stock market turns out to be the catalyst that derails the AI equity boom, but said it “strengthens our sense that the boom is in its final innings.”

“That is an obvious headwind for the firms directly involved in that build-out,” Maher wrote.

OpenAI is responding to the backlash. On Thursday, the company laid out plans to build more trust with local communities and to work with them on the development of data centers. The company said it would no longer use controversial nondisclosure agreements with public officials and provide residents access to construction plans.

The AI boom has driven the stock market to record highs, so reversals could dent millions of Americans’ retirement savings and hurt consumer spending, which accounts for roughly two-thirds of U.S. economic activity.

Nigel Green, CEO of investment advisory firm deVere Group, told investors in a research note, “The spending is enormous, borrowing is climbing, and investors want to know when the returns arrive. Asking is healthy. Dumping an entire sector over it is an overreaction.”

He added: “[T]ech had become the most crowded trade on the planet. When everyone owns the same stocks, it takes very little to spark a rush for the exit, and the exit narrows fast.”

President Trump said he is “100% in favor” of AI and vowed to work with states that want to “become RICH by having them.”

“They are GOLD, and only foolish leadership will say “NO” to the riches they bring!” the president posted on Truth Social.

Cracks in AI sector

CBS News business analyst Jill Schlesinger told “CBS Mornings” that the post-election gains in the stock market were about Tuesday’s results as a whole — while the losses that followed appear to reflect that investors have had time to digest the results of the ballot measures around AI.

“What we are hearing is that people are nervous about AI — they want to limit the building of AI,” she said. “That hits not just the AI companies, but the companies that are building those data centers, the companies that are providing the chips for AI and other financing of AI. That brought the entire tech index down, but also it spilled over to other indexes.”

She warned that people should expect more volatility in the stock market.

“What we are now seeing is a repudiation of the AI story,” Schlesinger said. “What were we promised? This is transformative technology, it is, but it’s not profitable yet. All these AI companies are investing in each other. The interconnectedness, the use of borrowed money, that is all coming to a place wherein investors are saying, ‘Wait a second. If they aren’t profitable yet, they owe all this money, what does that mean about the value of the company in and of itself?’”

Schlesinger said the volatility in the AI industry is already impacting the broader stock market, particularly if companies are forced to sell other stocks to cover some of those losses.

“That’s where it could spread,” she said. “It’s not spreading into the economy yet, but if you are a retirement investor, be clear: taking no action is a wonderful action in and of itself long term. Stick with your game plan.”
