Social Security recipients will get a 3.6% bump in benefits in 2027

Senior citizens and other Social Security beneficiaries will receive a 3.6% boost in their monthly payments in 2027, the Social Security Administration announced Wednesday, making it the largest cost of living adjustment since 2023.

Monthly payments for retired workers will rise by about $75 to an estimated average of $2,170 starting in January, the agency said. Nearly 72 million senior citizens, people with disabilities and others receive Social Security benefits.

The roughly 7.3 million lower-income people who receive Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, will also receive a 3.6% bump. Some people receive both Social Security benefits and SSI.

Social Security monthly payments are a key source of income for many senior citizens. That makes the annual adjustment “critically important,” Myechia Minter-Jordan, CEO of AARP, a powerful advocacy organization for older Americans, said in a statement.

“There’s a lot on the line financially right now for older Americans: one in five have no retirement savings, and more people feel financially insecure this year than last,” she said. The annual raise “helps millions of Americans keep up with rising costs for groceries, routine bills, health care and other everyday expenses.”

However, many older Americans say the annual adjustments, known as COLAs, haven’t been enough to cover their ever-rising expenses.

Inflation has ticked up this year amid the ongoing war with Iran, which has sent gas and diesel prices soaring. But Social Security recipients only received a 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment for 2026.

The COLA is based on an inflation metric from the third quarter of the prior year. A related metric, the Consumer Price Index, rose 3.7% in September compared with a year ago, the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced Wednesday.

In 2023, Social Security beneficiaries saw an 8.7% increase, following the surge in inflation the year before.

Part of beneficiaries’ COLA for 2027 will be eaten up by an increase in Medicare Part B premiums, which should be released in the coming weeks. The monthly premium for 2027 is expected to rise to $209.50, up $6.60 from this year, according to Medicare’s most recent trustees report. That’s much smaller than the nearly $18 jump in premiums for this year.

    Crucial annual raise

Many senior citizens and their advocates have pushed for changes to the COLA to have it better reflect their actual cost of living.

The inflation measure used to calculate the COLA is designed to reflect the costs for working Americans, not retirees, said Nancy Altman, president of Social Security Works, an advocacy group. Older Americans spend a larger share of their income on healthcare, housing and other necessities.

“The COLA adjustment will help. But it doesn’t fully account for the costs that Social Security beneficiaries face,” said Altman, who supports switching to another inflation measure geared to spending by the elderly.

Social Security benefits have lost 13.7% of their buying power over the past decade, according to a recent analysis by The Senior Citizens League, an advocacy group. Put another way, a dollar of benefits in 2016 is only worth 86 cents today.

Payments would have to jump by nearly $296 a month, or about $3,550 annually, to restore their buying power for the average beneficiary, the analysis found.

Others, however, would like to reduce the COLA’s generosity – particularly for better-off retirees – to help stabilize Social Security’s finances.

Those collecting the maximum monthly Social Security benefit will enjoy a boost of more than $2,200 for next year, compared to a roughly $900 annual uptick for the average retiree, according to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, a watchdog group. It noted that Social Security’s trust fund will be drained in six years, which will result in a benefit cut of 22%.

“To help restore Social Security solvency, lawmakers should consider reforming future COLAs,” the committee said in a blog post.

    2026-10-14T15:33:23.787Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/10/14/politics/katie-zacharia-lawyer-press-secretary

The real problem with Katie Zacharia not actually being a ‘lawyer’

    2026-10-14T15:33:23.787Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/10/14/politics/katie-zacharia-lawyer-press-secretary

A version of this story appeared in CNN’s What Matters newsletter. To get it in your inbox, sign up for free here.

The press secretary is supposed to spin the news, not be the news.

On that most essential qualification, the new lead White House spokeswoman, Katie Zacharia, is struggling.

She has presented herself as a lawyer but does not meet the requirements in her home state to use that title.

It’s a development made even more awkward after Republicans mercilessly attacked the Democratic candidate for US Senate in Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed, for not being a doctor, though he went to medical school and made his career in public health.

Zacharia has a law degree from the Pepperdine Caruso School of Law, but there’s no evidence she ever passed a bar exam. She does claim to have obtained a credential in China, but it’s not at all clear what credential she’s talking about.

Squabbles over who can call themselves a lawyer or a doctor probably seem beside the point to a large portion of the country.

This issue here is not that a law degree is required to be White House press secretary — it isn’t.

The issue is that Zacharia has presented herself repeatedly on TV, including on CNN, as a lawyer, something the independent journalist Judd Legum first documented. Trump used the term “attorney” to describe her when he announced she would be his press secretary.

A review by CNN’s K-File found at least six instances when she referred to herself as either a lawyer or a corporate lawyer in her own words and multiple other instances in which she posted or reposted to social media using the term attorney or “legal strategist.”

Washington, DC, is filled to the brim with people who have law degrees but do not practice law. And it does not appear that Zacharia inappropriately tried to represent anyone in a court.

But all of this does suggest the vetting operation at the White House is, to be charitable, not very thorough.

When reporters asked Trump at the White House where Zacharia passed the bar, she chimed in from behind him that she was when she moved to China. Even Trump did a double take.

Zacharia later told Politico she had “practiced international transactional law, with all the appropriate credentials.”

It’s not clear — and the White House has not clarified — what certification Zacharia obtained in China, but it’s not the Chinese version of the bar exam. Only citizens can become licensed to practice law in China, according to the Ministry of Justice.

Questions about Zacharia’s CV are also an awkward development since Republicans in Michigan have attacked the Democrat running for Senate there, Abdul El-Sayed, for not being a doctor despite having gone to medical school.

At a debate this month, the Republican in the Senate race, former Rep. Mike Rogers, went so far as to say El-Sayed was a “con man.”

As CNN has reported, El-Sayed earned a Doctor of Medicine from Columbia University, but he does not practice clinical medicine.

El-Sayed has held public health positions in the Detroit area. His top policy issue is extending health insurance to all Americans.

Democratic boosters of El-Sayed have continued to call him a doctor.

“Abdul’s a doctor, and he’s taken on special interests to fight for good jobs, better healthcare, and lower costs,” former President Barack Obama said in an ad he cut for the Michigander.

In addition to saying on TV that she is a lawyer, Zacharia cites some legal-sounding work on her LinkedIn page; for example, she lists herself as “general counsel” for the activist group Fix California. In the nonprofit group’s tax filing for 2024, Zacharia’s name appears as having been a fundraiser.

She also lists herself as having worked as an “associate” in the international practice group at the Zhong Lun Law Firm in Beijing for nearly two years starting in 2011.

The White House press corps, obviously, has followed up on this mystery.

“Katie moved to China with her husband after graduating because of his job at an American private equity firm while she worked on international transaction law,” according to a White House official.

CNN’s White House team has found no evidence that Zacharia has passed the bar exam in the states where she has lived and worked since graduating from Pepperdine.

Here’s what California’s bar association told them:

California law lays out what’s required to be a lawyer.

There are requirements for college and law school, or their equivalents; for “good moral character”; passing an ethics exam; and passing the bar exam in California.

Zacharia, as a result, should not be considered a lawyer in California, the state where she has lived and worked.

But so many more questions remain. What is the credential Zacharia obtained in China, if any? Did she try to take a bar exam and fail, or simply not take it? Why did no one at the White House, especially after questions arose about El-Sayed’s status as a doctor, think to follow up on this earlier?

None of that really matters to anyone who is more concerned with how the White House is handling the war Trump launched on Iran or the related inflation that continues to hit Americans in the wallet. Questions about whether Zacharia can call herself a lawyer, or not, mostly distract from those other, larger issues.

Ultimately, Trump is the person who speaks for his administration in the long, often rambling appearances he frequently makes in the Oval Office.

But those appearances may become less enjoyable for him in the future, especially if Democrats take control of one or both chambers of Congress and, as expected, launch a series of investigations into his administration, the money his family has made during his presidency, and much more.

He will, at that point, need a press secretary he can trust.

    CNN’s Andrew Kaczynski contributed reporting.

Demonstrators disrupted War Secretary Pete Hegseth’s appearance at the Association of the United States Army’s annual conference in Washington, where senior military leaders gathered to discuss the Pentagon’s plans for autonomous warfare.

Protesters repeatedly interrupted War Secretary Pete Hegseth’s headline appearance at the Army’s biggest annual conference on Wednesday, calling him a “war criminal” and a “coward” in protest of the Iran war.

At least five times in the first half hour of a panel, foul-mouthed anti-war protesters shouted at Hegseth, calling him a “f—ing Nazi” among other insults.

Hegseth responded with chuckles and sarcastic comments, at first — but his reactions became increasingly short and irritated as he slammed the “semi-coordinated” attack as one-by-one protesters emerged among the crowd in Washington, D.C.

“You’re not a warrior you’re a coward!” one demonstrator shouted at Hegseth.

“She thinks highly of me,” the Pentagon chief quipped after one outburst, which led to brief applause from the crowd.

The protesters were spread among the room and waited a few minutes between outbursts to interrupt the panel with their anti-war messages.

As Hegseth saw a pattern emerging among the outbreaks, he acknowledged: “Appears we have a bit of a tactic.”

The demonstrators were forcibly removed by security for the event — with at least one woman needing to be carried out of the room by multiple officers while she continued to scream her protest.

The panel with Hegseth included acting Army Secretary Adam Telle, acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao, Air Force Secretary Troy Meink and assistant Secretary for Special Operations and Low-Intensity Conflict Derrick Evans.

As the disruptions continued, the speakers stopped pausing amid the din of shouting and tried to talk over the protesters.

Trump administration escalates voter roll fight with threats against California election officials

    2026-10-14T15:17:06.676Z / CNN

The Trump administration threatened to take legal action against California election officials if they did not review a list of alleged noncitizens on Los Angeles’ voter rolls within 48 hours, according to a Tuesday letter from the Justice Department obtained by CNN.

The letter, signed by the number two official at the Justice Department, is an escalation in DOJ’s attempts to press for aggressive voter purges with ballots already mailed out in some states, after courts have repeatedly pushed back at attempts by the administration to insert itself in the running of elections. It’s the latest step in a government-wide push to find voter fraud amid President Donald Trump’s baseless claims of widespread cheating in elections.

The Justice Department is demanding that the election officials refuse to send ballots to the alleged noncitizen voters and is requesting that election officials segregate ballots from voters on the list until their citizenship is confirmed.

Acting deputy Attorney General Trent McCotter wrote in the letter that if Los Angeles County elections officials do not take steps to identify the alleged noncitizen voters, DOJ would “have no choice but to seek emergency relief.”

McCotter wrote that the department provided a password-protected thumb drive containing names the administration “believes are likely non-citizens” who were sent a mail ballot this year. It requests that the election officials work with the Department of Homeland Security to comply with its demands.

The letter was first reported by Reuters.

Spokespeople for the California Secretary of State Shirley Weber and for the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder Dean Logan, did not immediately respond to CNN’s inquiries about the latest administration demands.

It is not clear what legal avenue the administration could use to force California election officials to take the actions it seeks. The Constitution gives states the primary job of running elections, though it allows Congress to pass some regulations of the vote as well.

Earlier this summer, the Justice Department sent letters warning it would prosecute election officials who did not take adequate steps to remove noncitizens from voter registration files, but state officials of both parties dismissed the threat.

It’s unclear why the Justice Department sent the letter now, as election officials view the window for changing protocols as closed.

“California’s voter lists are public, and this administration has had 21 months with total control of the federal government to review those public lists,” said David Becker, a former DOJ voting section attorney who now advises election administrators.

“California sent out mail ballots to all voters on Oct 5. One must question why the DOJ would violate its own rules about investigating elections close to Election Day, and over a week after they knew the state had already mailed ballots out, particularly when their past claims have been full of errors,” Becker said.

The Justice Department defended sending the letters.

“Federal law is clear: only American citizens may vote in federal elections. The Department will take all necessary legal action to protect election integrity and ensure compliance with federal law,” said DOJ spokesperson Kiersten Pels.

The Trump administration has alleged there are hundreds of thousands of non-citizens on voter rolls. In August, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin claimed DHS had identified 250,000 non-citizens registered to vote in four states — including California, along with Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Nevada — by comparing public voter rolls with federal immigration records.

But those claims have come under immense scrutiny and, in some cases, failed to hold up. In Nevada, for instance, DHS acknowledged to state officials that its initial claim of 15,900 non-citizen registrants was an unvetted preliminary finding, and that it had only “confirmed” 185 of them through manual review. Last month, Nevada officials told DHS that their own subsequent review found all 185 were citizens — a conclusion DHS disputes.

The Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division has also sought unredacted state voter roll data from the states as part of its hunt for noncitizens on the rolls. The department has sued 30 states demanding the data — but lost every case where a judge has ruled so far, including in California.

Other attempts by the administration to police how states handle elections have also been shut down in court. The Supreme Court blocked a Trump directive for the US Postal Service to screen mail ballots, and a 2025 executive order from the president seeking to boost the proof of citizenship requirements for voter registration was halted in court as well.

Trump’s efforts to implement those requirements through legislation faltered in Congress this year. A recent judge’s ruling dismissing a non-citizen voter prosecution the administration brought in Florida also has raised constitutional questions about the federal law barring non-citizen voting.

The administration did secure a major legal win when the Supreme Court okayed a federal immigration data system that Trump has encouraged states to use to vet the citizenship status of their registered voters. Election officials in more than half of the states use the system voluntarily. However, even Republican election officials have balked at proposals from Justice Department that would force them to purge voters whom the administration has deemed ineligible — particularly given the accuracy concerns around the federal government’s data tools.

CNN’s Gabe Cohen contributed to this report.
