‘Special sauce of crazy’ — Midwest Dem candidate’s policies too extreme for voters: opponent

El-Sayed and Stevens face off Tuesday in the Democratic Party’s biggest ideological battle between far-left and center-left

Michigan GOP Senate hopeful Mike Rogers says he’d beat either Democrat, blasts rivals as ‘too extreme’

Presumptive Republican Senate nominee in Michigan former Rep. Mike Rogers speaks one-on-one with Fox News Digital in Farmington Hills, Michigan.

DETROIT, Michigan — Republican Mike Rogers is confident he’ll defeat whichever Democratic rival he faces off with in the midterm elections in the crucial Senate showdown in this Great Lakes battleground state.

“It doesn’t matter to us. We’ve looked at both candidates. We feel confident we’re going to beat either one of those candidates that come out of that race,” Rogers said in a Fox News Digital interview two days before Michigan’s primary.

Abdul El-Sayed, a former Wayne County Health Department director who unsuccessfully ran an insurgent campaign for governor in 2018, is facing off for the Democratic Party’s nomination in Michigan against Rep. Haley Stevens,a more moderate candidate backed by the establishment. The primary race is the biggest battle to date in the party’s ideological war between the far-left and the center-left.

THE MIDTERM SENATE RACES THAT COULD FLIP THE BALANCE OF POWER IN CONGRESS

Rogers says both El-Sayed and Stevens “are very radical, and they are way too extreme for Michigan.” And pointing to El-Sayed, he charged, “Abdul, he has his own special sauce of crazy.”

The expensive and combustible scrum between El-Sayed and Stevens in the race to succeed retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters, who is backing Stevens, is bolstering Republicans and potentially endangering a must-hold seat in November for the Democrats as they face an uphill challenge to win back the Senate majority.

“That certainly helps,” Rogers said as he pointed to the Democratic primary battle.

Rogers, a former congressman who lost the 2024 Senate election in Michigan by a razor-thin margin while President Trump narrowly carried the state, touted that while the Democrats engage in what some describe as a civil war, “we’ve unified the Republican Party in a way I haven’t seen in decades here on this particular race.”

“We’re building our team, our resources, and are ready for the fight after August 5 in a way I don’t think Democrats are expecting,” he highlighted.

El-Sayed, who, if elected, would make history as the nation’s first Muslim senator, has made support for Medicare-for-all a major component of his campaign.

He has also called for abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and is a vocal critic of Israel amid its war with Hamas — even characterizing Israel’s actions in Gaza as “genocide” against Palestinians. And El-Sayed, who served as a top surrogate on Sanders’ 2020 presidential campaign, has vowed not to accept PAC donations.

El-Sayed, who is backed by many leaders on the left and was joined on the campaign trail two weeks ago by progressive champions Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, has reiterated that he’s not a socialist.

But Rogers argued that El-Sayed is “in a different league altogether about pushing that socialist agenda, Democrat Socialists of America are in Michigan working for him right now. They’re parachuting in from all over the country.”

“If you believe in the future of America and your own prosperity and your individual liberties, well…. We’re going to talk about it because they’ve got plans to take all that away,” Rogers claimed, as he pointed to the far left and El-Sayed. “And just because you’re a smooth talker and could sell ice to an Eskimo doesn’t mean people are ready to give up their rights.”

Both El-Sayed and Stevens are confident that Democrats will unite following Tuesday’s primary.

“Let’s make sure that anyone but Mike Rogers gets to the United States Senate,” Stevens told reporters on Sunday. “After the primary, you’re going to see a united Democratic Party. You are going to see us going full force, full fledge ahead.”

And El-Sayed told Fox News Digital, “I think we all understand the risk of Donald Trump. We all understand the risk of Mike Rogers.”

https://www.foxnews.com/video/6402684489112Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed says he’ll unite party against Trump, Rogers after combustible primary

“This is a guy who is not going to stand up and take on the war machine. He’s not going to stand up and take on Big Pharma. He’s not going to stand up and take on Big Tech. He is going to do the bidding of large corporations,” El-Sayed argued as he referred to Rogers. “I think everybody understands what the stakes are. So I’m looking forward to welcoming everybody who might have voted differently in the primary.”

Socialist House candidate says he agrees with Republicans on ‘one issue’

Michigan’s Donavan McKinney is among the DSA candidates working to primary incumbents

    August 3, 2026 1:00pm EDT / Fox News

A socialist candidate vying to unseat a sitting House Democrat says there is “one issue” he agrees with Republicans on.

Michigan state lawmaker Donavan McKinney is among the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) members giving establishment Democrats a run for their money across the country ahead of the 2026 midterm elections in November.

Members of the group have shown that they’re a potent force among the left’s base voters, while also working to appeal to the same working-class, anti-establishment sentiment that helped President Donald Trump get elected in 2016.

DSA MEMBER LEADS DEM PRIMARY IN MIDWEST BATTLEGROUND BUT TRAILS LIKELY GOP NOMINEE: POLL

Michigan state Rep. Donavan McKinney rallied over the weekend in his bid to unseat Rep. Shri Thanedar, D-Mich., on Aug. 2, 2026.(Paul Steinhauser/Fox News Digital)

The latest evidence of that is McKinney’s tease in a recent interview with Zeteo News, “I gotta give Republicans — I agree with them on this one issue. The one issue is waste, fraud and abuse.”

But he differed with the GOP on where that’s coming from.

“Republicans’ analysis is there’s waste, fraud and abuse when it comes to the poor. It’s kind of like, you know, voting fraud. There’s like .0001%, like very small percentage of folks, poor people, take advantage of the system,” McKinney said. “The waste, fraud and abuse is coming from our taxpayer dollars subsidizing our corporations and the wealthy, so they can get richer and we keep being poor.”

SOCIALIST-BACKED MICHIGAN SENATE HOPEFUL CALLS AMERICAN POLITICS A ‘DISEASE’ AFTER PROFESSING LOVE FOR US

“We’re gonna attack the waste, fraud and abuse, but we’re going to attack it for the top 1% earners in this country,” he added of his goals if elected to the House.

McKinney is running to unseat Rep. Shri Thanedar, D-Mich., a progressive who split with the DSA over the party’s anti-Israel sentiment.

And during a rally over the weekend, McKinney attempted to appeal to voters who feel the strain of high costs in their everyday lives.

HOUSE REPUBLICANS AIM TO TURN DEMOCRATIC CIVIL WAR INTO MIDTERM WEAPON

“All I hear across our communities is that I don’t have enough resources to survive. I would define politics, it’s pretty simple, it’s the redistribution of resources. Well, we have to take our taxpayer money to send it overseas for bombs and weapons, to kill families and children. No more to support genocide. I think that’s a damn shame,” he said.

“We’re in Iran spending billions of dollars a day on average. And you’re telling me the people in my district, the seniors, our children, our most vulnerable populations can’t get the resources they deserve? I don’t think this is the America anyone wants us to live in, am I right?”

He also criticized “self-interested” lawmakers in both parties for falling out of touch with what Americans across the country are struggling with.

But on the other side of the aisle, the growing insurgency from the socialist left could provide a boon to Republicans who are fighting an uphill battle to keep control of the House.

GOP leaders across the country are warning that Americans are not interested in socialism or its core beliefs, like the redistribution of wealth and demise of capitalism.

Meanwhile, DSA-linked candidates have already unseated incumbent House Democrats in New York and Colorado.

Top Dem torches socialists taking over his party: ‘They’re anti-American’

Gottheimer emphasizes the rise of the Democratic Socialists of America during recent high-profile primary elections. He argues that mainstream leaders must actively reject radical progressive policies to maintain voter trust and win competitive congressional elections.

A leading House Democrat went scorched-earth on insurgent socialists rising within his party, repeatedly telling them to start their own party and accusing them of trying to “hijack” the Democratic Party as a “vessel” for their communist, “anti-American,” open-border platform.

House Intelligence Committee member Josh Gottheimer, D-N.J., a leader of the moderate Blue Dog Coalition, told Fox News on Sunday that the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) is “not Democrats” and rejected the idea that its platform is compatible with the Democratic Party’s.

“Obviously, I’m a very proud, commonsense Democrat, and I don’t think DSA members are Democrats. They’re socialists, right? And I’m all for them having their own party if they want one, but if they’re trying to take over our party, that’s unacceptable to me,” Gottheimer said on “The Big Weekend Show.”

“Their values, their ideas are certainly not in line with ours, and they don’t support our leadership. They’re trying to use the Democratic Party as a vessel for their ideas. And as you heard in some of these conventions, literally, they’re supporting the Communist Manifesto and Leon Trotsky, they’re anti-American, they are anti-cop, they don’t believe in borders.”

Gottheimer was referring to man-on-the-street clips of DSA members at the group’s Chicago convention. One socialist said they are organizing a front to get “ICE off our campuses,” while a member of the DSA’s National Political Committee said people such as Gottheimer who call them anti-American do not understand that their platform is the “most American thing you can do.”

Another DSA NPC member said socialism is the “same kind of stuff that I am used to [in] growing up in the Christian Church.”

Gottheimer said 45 million voters are registered Democrats, compared with 150,000 official DSA members.

“They’re not welcome in the Democratic Party,” he said.

He pushed back against members of his own party who have expressed openness to DSA-aligned candidates such as Maine oysterman Graham Platner.

Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., who represents Silicon Valley, said Democrats should not have “watched wealth pile up on Wall Street and Silicon Valley” at the expense of working-class Americans, adding that “the Democratic Party needs reform.”

Gottheimer countered that fringe coalitions are mounting insurgencies in both parties and “trying to barge in” with incompatible ideas.

He also pointed to longtime Clinton confidant James Carville, who told Fox News that he would disown the Democratic Party if left-wing streamer Hasan Piker were permitted to become one of its leaders.

Former U.S. Marine Corps bomb technician Johnny Joey Jones asked whether Gottheimer would also leave the party over Piker or if Democratic leaders embraced socialists such as Harlem’s Darializa Chevalier.

“Well, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries won’t — and let me be very clear that Hasan Piker is not a Democrat – the guy is the ultimate grifter, right? He’s the guy who said that 9/11 is America’s fault… We’ve got to make it clear he’s not welcome in the Democratic Party.”

Gottheimer said the DSA platform shows that the organization is incompatible with the Democratic Party. He added that socialists can “scream and yell and try to …hijack [the party] and shove their ideas in and use it as a vessel.”

“We have to make clear that’s not who we are…”

While Gottheimer reiterated that he does not plan to leave the Democratic Party any time soon, Jones noted that one prominent New Jersey Democrat already has.

Rep. Jeff Van Drew, whose district includes Cape May, switched parties during President Donald Trump’s first term, angering South Jersey Democratic committees as the longtime lawmaker embraced Trump’s platform.

Gottheimer’s district includes liberal New York City suburbs immediately west of the George Washington Bridge and the deep-red, Trump-friendly Skylands near the Delaware Water Gap, making it one of the most politically diverse districts in the state’s congressional delegation.

States sue over Trump policy of sharing benefits data with immigration authorities

Aug 3 (Reuters) – A coalition of Democratic-led U.S. states sued the Trump administration on Monday to block a new policy allowing federal immigration authorities to receive information about low-income families with children enrolled in a cash-assistance program.

The lawsuit marked the latest in a series of legal ‌battles over efforts by the administration to give immigration officials access to sensitive personal data on millions of people held by other government agencies.

“The Trump administration is exploiting a program designed to ensure children do not go hungry and to help needy families get back on their feet in order to fuel its mass surveillance effort,” California Attorney General Rob Bonta, a Democrat, said in a statement.

The lawsuit takes aim at a move announced in June by the Administration for Children and Families, a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, to allow it to share with other agencies records on families receiving benefits from the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program.

The federally funded, state-administered program provides over $16 billion annually to states to provide assistance to low-income families with children, including cash payments.

The states, in a lawsuit filed in federal court in Washington, said that the law enacting TANF specifically put states, and not the federal government, in charge of verifying applicants’ ‌eligibility for benefits.

Yet the states said the Administration for Children and Families is now claiming it has broad authority to oversee their TANF programs and share benefit recipients’ data with other agencies including the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and check their immigration status, potentially deterring those legally qualified to receive benefits from applying.

The data-sharing policy is set to take effect August 11.

The agency did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but it has said that the policy is necessary to assess whether states are verifying TANF recipients’ citizenship or immigration status before providing them benefits.

The states argue that the policy violates the Administrative Procedure Act and the U.S. Constitution by ignoring current data-sharing restrictions and by placing new, arbitrary conditions on federal funding.

“Instead of helping families struggling with the rising cost of living, this administration is trying to turn antipoverty programs against the people they’re supposed to serve,” New York Attorney General Letitia James, a Democrat, said in a statement.

FIRST ON FOX: President Donald Trump is expected to sign an executive order on Monday creating a new White House commission aimed at putting military families at the heart of military readiness, Fox News Digital has learned.

The executive order would establish the President’s Military Spouse Commission, which would advise the president on policies affecting military spouses and families and provide annual recommendations to improve their quality of life while strengthening military readiness, a White House official told Fox News Digital.

The commission is designed to give the White House a direct line to the challenges facing military spouses, including childcare, employment, housing, healthcare, education and the demands of multiple deployments.

Trump is expected to sign the order Monday afternoon alongside War Secretary Pete Hegseth, his wife Jennifer, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine, and several military spouses, the official said.

The Military Spouse Commission will be chaired by Jennifer Hegseth.

“Military spouses are the bedrock of our Armed Forces’ readiness and resilience. They are often overlooked but we see them and want them to know help is on the way,”Jennifer Hegseth told Fox News Digital. “I am deeply honored to lead this Commission alongside my fellow military spouses in leadership. We will work tirelessly to dismantle the barriers our families face every single day and these families can rest assured they have a champion in the White House with President Trump.”

Trump will appoint an executive director, while Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin’s wife, Christie Mullin, and 20 other military spouses representing the service secretaries, Joint Chiefs of Staff and each branch’s senior enlisted leader will serve as commission members.

“The fight to support our service members is not just abroad, it’s also right here at home,” said Mullin to Fox News Digital.

“My wife, Christie, has been supporting service members and their families in Oklahoma since before we entered public service and I can think of no better choice for someone to sit on this commission than her. In her role, she will continue leadership that demonstrates some of her greatest qualities: love, mentorship, and care driven decision making that will no doubt impact the spouses of service members in a positive way,” Mullin added.

Military spouse employment and pay are the top concerns for active-duty military families, followed by time away from family, childcare, housing and housing allowances, and children’s education, according to Blue Star Families’ latest Military Family Lifestyle Survey.

An estimated 1 million children have at least one parent serving on active duty, according to government website Military One Source.

During his first term, Trump expanded support for military families by improving occupational license portability for military spouses, broadening access to remote and flexible work, and increasing opportunities for federal employment.

In 2018, Trump also signed legislation allowing military spouses to claim the same state of legal residence as their active-duty spouse, even when military orders require the family to move elsewhere.

(CBS News)

2027 Met Gala to feature designer John Galliano and his controversial legacy

    August 3, 2026 / 2:06 PM EDT / CBS News
    By Kelsie Hoffman

The 2027 Met Gala is already causing controversy.

The event will feature John Galliano, who is known for his theatrical and dramatic designs. But Galliano’s legacy is also marked by antisemitic and racist comments, which led to his dismissal from Christian Dior in 2011 and a hate crime conviction in France. He was not given prison time.

Galliano has publicly apologized. He has said he was under the influence of alcohol and prescription drugs at the time.

“The fashion industry — they keep their own, and he is one of their own,” Lauren Sherman, a CBS News fashion contributor and Puck fashion correspondent, said on “CBS Mornings” Monday. “There was forgiveness a long time ago in fashion.”

About 10 years ago, Anna Wintour, then-editor-in-chief of Vogue, “really worked hard to give Galliano a second chance in the fashion industry,” Sherman explained. “She got him a job at Maison Margiela.”

A documentary in 2024, “High & Low – John Galliano,” outlined Galliano’s rise, fall and rehabilitation.

    Galliano’s impact on fashion

Galliano was the designer of Christian Dior for about 15 years.

“He sort of was integral to the change and the transformation of the fashion industry, and he was also one of the final designers to sort of do innovative fashion,” Sherman said. “The ’90s was sort of the last time we saw anything new.”

Galliano and Alexander McQueen, the late British designer who was the subject of a previous Met Gala, were the last two big designers to change the way we dress, she said.

The exhibit next year, titled “John Galliano: Horizons,” will be only the third time a living designer is the subject of a solo show at the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It is set to explore both Galliano’s creative accomplishments and controversies.

“John Galliano’s tribulations and everything that he has gone through has to be a part of this exhibit because that is a part of his body of work in some ways,” Sherman said.

But his controversies may not be the focus the night of the gala, she said.

“I can imagine a world where that night, no one really talks about any of this stuff. Maybe there will be — it will be addressed in some ways by Jewish leaders who maybe end up attending the gala. We’ll see,” she said.

Galliano and Wintour met with influential rabbis and Jewish leaders in New York City in May about the exhibit and gala, The New York Times reported.

In a statement, The Metropolitan Museum of Art said in part that the exhibit will “directly address the rupture caused by his (Galliano’s) antisemitic, racist, and anti-Asian conduct in 2010 and 2011, which resulted in his dismissal from Christian Dior and his eponymous label and his conviction by a Paris court for public insults based on race, religion, ethnicity, or origin.

“It will also consider his subsequent treatment for substance addiction and his later public acknowledgment of his actions. Rather than presenting a conventional narrative of disgrace and redemption, the gallery will examine how memory, experience, cultural values, and historical circumstances continually reshape the reception of a designer’s work.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Funeral held for family “wiped off the map” in Russian strike on Ukraine, neighbor says

    August 3, 2026 / 1:35 PM EDT / CBS/AFP

The funeral of five members of the same family who were killed in a Russian airstrike last week was held in central Ukraine on Monday, as Moscow again pounded the region.

According to the Ukrainian authorities, a direct hit by an Iskander ballistic missile struck the family’s house in Kryvyi Rih — President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s home city — on July 30.

At least two adults and four children were killed but the death toll could be higher as all the remains have not yet been formally identified.

On Monday, the coffins of five of the dead were brought to a small church in the town in front of a crowd of several dozen people, an AFP journalist said.

The family was “exceptionally good and sincere,” said Oksana Stretovych, a colleague of one of the deceased, Olena Voronova. “They always responded to all kinds of situations and tried to help.”

Stretovych herself heard “a powerful explosion” on the night of the tragedy.

She was unable to sleep because she was worried about her husband and their only son, who serves in the Ukrainian army in “difficult” areas, she explained.

“When I got up and looked around me, not seeing any flames, I still started to try to find out what happened,” Stretovych added. “That’s how I found out about the incident. It’s very hard.”

    “Even bigger desire for vengeance”

Stretovych’s son, military officer Taras, also said they were “a wonderful family, a large family, a family of faith, who simply worked for the good of Ukraine.”

Russian forces “simply wiped off the map a great family that we mourn deeply,” he said, adding that he had “an even bigger desire for vengeance.”

The priest also described the family as respectable and hardworking.

On the evening of the strike, he said, “at my place, too, in the garage, the window was blown out, and the one in the bedroom as well,” he said.

After the missile struck, the Voronov home “was gone; all that was left was flattened earth,” he added.

More than four years since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, shelling continues on an almost daily basis and is intensifying on both sides of the frontline, causing a growing number of civilian deaths.

On Monday, a new Russian attack near Kryvyi Rih killed three, including an 8-year-old child, at a service station, according to the head of the Dnipropetrovsk regional military administration, Oleksandr Ganzha.

In July, the U.N. expressed concern about an “alarming escalatory trend” of increased civilian casualties in Ukraine “driven by the intensifying use of powerful weapons that are particularly deadly when used in densely populated urban areas.”

3 children among 7 killed in strike on beach, Russia says

In Russia and annexed Crimea, Ukrainian strikes killed 11 on Monday, Russian officials said. Seven people, including three children, were killed and dozens wounded when a drone crashed on a Russian beach on the Black Sea coast, the local governor said.

“What happened today was a deliberate attack by the Kyiv regime on the civilian population, which has no connection whatsoever to military infrastructure,” the governor, Veniamin Kondratyev, said in a statement on Telegram.

Ukraine has escalated its retaliatory strikes on Russia in recent months, partly to pressure Moscow to the negotiating table after nearly four-and-a-half years of war. Ukraine has targeted energy and logistics infrastructure.

Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged in June that Ukrainian strikes were causing “problems” for Russia, saying they were “observing a certain shortage, but it’s not critical.”

Last week, Zelenskyy met in Washington with President Trump and representatives of American defense companies, as he pleaded for swifter and bigger deliveries of Patriot air defense systems that are the best way to stop Russia’s ballistic assaults.

The Iran war has drained stockpiles of the American-made interceptors. Mr. Trump has promised to grant Ukraine licenses to build its own Patriots, but production could take a long time to set up.

Aug 3 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump is expected to attend a roundtable on Friday with top mining executives hosted by the U.S. ‌State Department, according to two people familiar with the planning.

The event is part of the Trump administration’s broader efforts to expand domestic and allied supplies of critical minerals needed for energy, defense and advanced technologies. The agenda, participants and other details remain fluid and could change, according to the sources.

The Reuters Daily Briefing newsletter provides all the news you need to start your day. Sign up here.

The administration has made securing critical minerals supply chains a priority, taking steps to boost domestic production and processing, reduce reliance on China and strengthen partnerships with allies.

It has argued that expanding the sector will require not only investment in mines and processing facilities but also a larger pipeline of skilled workers, including engineers, geologists, miners and technicians, as companies face a shortage of talent needed to support future projects.

The U.S. Department of Energy is also expected to host an event ‌on Friday focused on workforce development, according to a third person with direct knowledge of the planning.

That event will include representatives from all 14 accredited U.S. mining schools, and aims to raise awareness of mining as a career path while highlighting the need for more students to enter the field, the source said.

China’s broad network of mining schools has helped it become the world’s largest minerals producer.

The White House, Energy Department and State Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

“We look forward to continuing to work with (the administration) on solutions to responsibly develop our nation’s vast resources, secure our supply chains and create the mining workforce of the future,” said Ashley Burke of the National Mining Association, an industry trade group.

Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon demanded in a letter sent July 29 that a school district in Maryland stop hiding information about student gender transitions from parents or face litigation from the Justice Department.

“By categorically withholding ‘(i)nformation about a student’s gender identity’ from parents except where ‘legally required,’ AACPS appears to have adopted a blanket, district-wide practice of nondisclosure untethered to FERPA’s enumerated exceptions … parents were denied access to their child’s full record, information was disclosed without parental consent, and the parents were denied a hearing to correct the record,” she wrote, aimed at the Anne Arundel County school system.

“Comply with the law or face us in court,” Dhillon later added on X.

The demand marks the Trump administration’s latest effort to challenge school policies that allow students to socially transition without their parents’ knowledge, testing whether federal education privacy law requires districts to disclose gender-identity records. Anne Arundel County now faces possible litigation — and potentially the loss of federal funding — unless it reverses the policy within seven days, escalating a national dispute over parental rights, a significant plank in the president’s policy agenda.

‘SHAME ON YOU’: SHERRILL KNEW VOTER-ROLL BOMBSHELL WAS COMING WHEN SHE CALLED TRUMP A LIAR, DOJ OFFICIAL SAYS

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)is designed to give parents the legal right to access their children’s educational records, which the Trump administration argues includes information related to changes in their gender identity. The law has previously been used by the DOJ in attempts to overturn similar policies in Maine and California.

LGBT advocates argue that nondisclosure for information linked to a child’s gender identity is important to preserving the safety of children growing up in non-affirming or abusive households. Social conservatives, meanwhile, take the position that schools don’t have the right to conceal information about their children from them.

Before Dhillon sent her letter Wednesday, the DOJ and the Department of Education announced that they had entered a partnership to crack down on transgender nondisclosure policies in both Anne Arundel County and Ann Arbor Public Schools in Michigan, potentially withholding federal funds from the district until it changes course.

In a press release announcing the joint effort, the agencies claimed that the Education Department had received complaints from parents in Anne Arundel County who alleged the district “was secretly helping their daughter pretend to be male at school” and declined to provide information about it when confronted.

An Education Department official told Fox News Digital that the agency does not comment on ongoing investigations and a DOJ spokesperson referred Fox News Digital to Dhillon’s remarks when reached for comment.

Students enrolled in Anne Arundel Public Schools are, per district policy, allowed to use any name or pronoun they prefer, even if it doesn’t align with their sex, without requiring parental approval. Staff are, however, instructed to involve the student’s family in developing a support plan for the student unless “there is a genuine safety concern for the student’s physical, emotional, or mental health safety.”

Additionally, the policy designates records about student gender identity as confidential medical information and advises that it should be revealed when legally necessary.

The Anne Arundel, Maryland, and Ann Arbor, Michigan, school districts did not respond to requests for comment when reached by Fox News Digital.

“School districts that hide information from parents are violating federal law,” Dhillon said. “FERPA is not optional, and any districts that attempt to bypass or distort its requirements should expect immediate federal action. In partnership with the Department of Education, the Department of Justice will initiate enforcement proceedings with districts that fail to comply.”

Dhillon’s letter gives Anne Arundel Public Schools seven days to rescind its policy, provide parents impacted with the relevant records and inform staff that they cannot withhold information from parents. If the deadline is not met, the letter claims the district could face legal action.

Furious Trump is considering removing Pirro over Reflecting Pool filing, sources say

    2026-08-03T18:35:05.983Z / CNN

President Donald Trump is considering removing Jeanine Pirro, the US attorney for the District of Columbia, over a Justice Department conclusion that problems with the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool stemmed from a flawed renovation rather than vandalism, two people familiar with his thinking told CNN.

The president is “furious” with Pirro, one of the sources said, telling CNN that he fumed about her all weekend. They added that based on his criticisms of her, they find it “highly likely she’s removed from her job.”

The other source, a senior administration official, said Trump was “blindsided” by Pirro’s court filing: “The president did not know beforehand that she was going to do that.”

CNN has reached out to Pirro’s office and the Justice Department for comment. The White House directed CNN to the president’s prior comments on the filing and did not comment on the substance of the reporting.

“Frankly, I think she choked, because the judge was really vicious. Instead of going after the people that did it, the judge went after her and went after her department, and I guess she choked,” Trump said during an unrelated Oval Office event Monday.

“I was disappointed in Jeanine Pirro. Really disappointed in Jeanine Pirro,” he added. “She folded like an umbrella.”

The Justice Department acknowledged in a court filing on Friday that the president’s $14 million renovation of the Reflecting Pool was “hasty and botched” and said it was dropping the criminal case against former Olympian David Hearn, who was accused of vandalizing the landmark. Hearn previously pleaded not guilty to the felony charge in DC’s Superior Court.

Trump and Pirro, a former Fox News host and longtime ally of the president, spoke by phone on Saturday about the court filing. Their conversation “wasn’t pretty,” said one of the sources, who was read out on the call.

Pirro told Trump it was the career officials in her office that were responsible for the filing, another source said. A longtime prosecutor who oversees prosecutions in DC Superior Court signed the court filing asking to dismiss the case on Friday.

In addition to the Saturday call, Pirro has spoken with Trump multiple times about the situation.

Trump on Saturday publicly criticized the move, posting to Truth Social: “I disagree 100% with Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, on the Reflecting Pool. I don’t know what she was thinking? To me, it was a pure case of VANDALISM.”

Pirro argued in her filing that the Department of Interior, led by Secretary Doug Burgum, “provided less than fulsome information at the outset of this case.”

“Had DOI been forthcoming with the information clearly in its possession, the government would not have sought a grand jury indictment,” it read.

Despite those accusations, the president is not angry with Burgum, the sources said, and he continues to believe that vandals are responsible for the damage to the Reflecting Pool. Burgum dismissed Pirro’s argument in a social media post on Saturday, saying, “The evidence is clear, vandals have repeatedly caused damage to the Reflecting Pool.”

However, internal communications CNN received through FOIA requests between the National Park Service — which oversaw the project under the Department of Interior — and DC Water from March through last month make no mention of any vandalism as the department was planning to drain the pool.

Trump had said the pool would need to be drained to make repairs caused by the alleged vandalism — yet an email from NPS acknowledged as early as July 1 that the pool would need to be drained due to algae. The agency also weighed whether to dye the pool water; in the past, the water has been dyed black to help reflect better.

Hearn has legal options that could unearth more embarrassing details on how his case was handled. The judge hasn’t officially dismissed Hearn’s charges as of Monday afternoon, and his lawyers are expected to file a response to Pirro’s request to dismiss the case this week.

“Nothing is off the table,” said Michael R. Bromwich, an attorney representing Hearn.

Among his options: referring the prosecutors involved to a bar disciplinary authority; asking inspectors general to look at the conduct of the Justice Department and Interior Department; filing lawsuits; seeking more of the grand jury record documenting the prosecutors’ presentation of the indictment; and asking the judge to dismiss the case so it cannot be brought again. Pirro’s office has so far sought only to dismiss Hearn’s charge without prejudice, meaning prosecutors wouldn’t be barred from attempting to revive the case later.

This story has been updated with additional context and reporting.

CNN’s Katelyn Polantz, Kaitlan Collins, Sunlen Serfaty and Casey Tolan contributed to this report.
