A program designed to assist businesses impacted by the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement efforts in Minnesota has been shut down following widespread fraud concerns, according to local news reports.

The board of Hennepin County in Minnesota, home to Minneapolis, approved $2 million in funding for local businesses impacted by Operation Metro Surge — a large-scale immigration enforcement operation in Minnesota launched in December 2025. The county received roughly 300 applications and ultimately distributed about $500,000 to 82 applicants, while more than 200 applications were flagged for potential fraud, according to local reports.

“The fact that people, after all this fraud, felt that they could apply and get away with it, I think it’s a problem because clearly there’s no fear out there,” Hennepin County Commissioner Jeff Lunde said, according to Kare 11. “Until we get it where people fear things, then they’re gonna keep doing it.”

Much of President Donald Trump’s rhetoric surrounding illegal immigration in Minnesota has been targeted at the state’s Somali population amid reports of widespread fraud.

Members of Minnesota’s Somali community have been accused, and in some cases convicted, of using non-existent or inactive businesses and nonprofits to siphon money away from government programs intended to help the needy.

Similarly, Hennepin County officials reported that many businesses seeking relief funds drafted applications containing false information, seemingly fabricated by AI, that were copied, pasted, and submitted for multiple businesses. Other businesses submitting applications, meanwhile, were found not to exist when county officials made site visits.

“Then at a certain point we’re like, ‘OK, we’re getting declining results on that.’ And so we said it’s time to stop the program. So we just stopped processing at that point,” Lunde, who characterized the applications as overwhelmingly fraudulent, said.

The immigration enforcement operation in the state also drew national attention after U.S. citizens Renee Good and Alex Pretti were fatally shot by federal agents in Minneapolis in January.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, a Democrat, has acknowledged responsibility for addressing the fraud in his state, saying it is his “responsibility to fix it.” He has previously argued that “any amount of fraud is too much and undermines the very programs that do so much to raise our quality of life.”

The governor, however, has pushed back on conservative attempts to pin the fraud primarily on the Somali community in the state.

“What is not helpful is the president of the United States demonizing an entire community,” the governor wrote in a December 2025 op-ed.

Washington’s growing alarm over artificial intelligence is beginning to echo Y2K, experts say, when dire warnings of technological catastrophe prompted a massive scramble to avert failures that ultimately proved far less severe than feared.

“You could draw all sorts of scary scenarios with Y2K as well. The financial system was just going to collapse because people had not written their programs for the year 2000. I had been writing programs in the 1980s for the government, so I’m well aware of the program,” Junk Science publisher and founder Steven Milloy told Fox News Digital.

“But of course, the tech industry knew about the problem, and to the extent that was a real problem, took action to fix it. The same can happen with AI,” Milloy added.

Y2K was a computer bug that raised fears systems could fail when the calendar changed from 1999 to 2000.The U.S. spent an estimated $100 billion, $200 billion adjusted for today’s inflation, in preparing for the problem, according to a 2000 Senate report.

When the new millennium arrived, there were few major disruptions.

President Donald Trump has made rapid AI development and the data centers needed to power it a priority, while the administration promotes the technology’s potential economic benefits and Democrats cry foul before midterm elections.

“Democrats are capitalizing on the fears of Americans that angst over AI,” Heritage Foundation technology analyst Annie Chestnut Tutor told Fox News Digital.

Democrats are increasingly calling for government guardrails on AI, citing potential threats ranging from job losses and inequality to risks to democracy and humanity. Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, for instance, wrote in April that AI “kills jobs, equality, connection, democracy and maybe the human race.”

But the apocalyptic warnings are not coming only from Washington.

Former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon quit the company over concerns about the race toward self-improving AI, warning that its developers are “gambling with our lives” and that such systems could potentially “kill us all by the end of the decade.”

Y2K sparked similar fears, as warnings spread of potential power-grid failures, disruptions to air travel and air-traffic control, and even predictions that planes could fall from the sky.

The Trump administration has backed targeted safeguards, including AI-powered cyber defenses for critical infrastructure, criminal enforcement against AI-enabled hacking and proposed measures to limit AI-driven child exploitation.

Tutor offered a nuanced Y2K comparison, arguing that the episode showed how technological risks can be addressed before they become potentially catastrophic.

“The reason now, like, we all laugh about Y2K is because actually software engineers and, like, financial analysts, they’ve worked really hard to ensure that the catastrophic incidents [didn’t] happen,” Tutor said.

“I think the same thing could happen with AI,” she added. “If AI is built right, it can be more beneficial to Americans than the doomsday scenario.”

Milloy said the Y2K comparison also fits a pattern he sees with climate change, with dire warnings of an existential threat followed by calls for sweeping government intervention.

Climate warnings have likewise been framed in apocalyptic terms, including predictions that entire nations could be wiped out by global warming, Arctic summer ice could disappear within years and Glacier National Park’s glaciers would vanish by 2020.

“There are a lot of parallels between climate hysteria and AI hysteria,” Milloy said. “Climate was existential. It was going to destroy the planet, and by implication, humanity. As we learned last week, AI is going to destroy humanity also on a very short time frame.”

Milloy argued that while lawmakers are crying foul, they have not established enough specific evidence of catastrophic AI scenarios to justify sweeping restrictions.

Trump has responded to AI warnings by calling them a “hoax,” reviving the language he has used for years to dismiss climate change concerns.

“Give me a real-life practical scenario of how this can happen,” he said. “And then if you know what the scenario is, then you can stop it.”

Several House Republicans spoke with Fox News Digital about President Donald Trump’s promise of $5,000 checks for every adult American if the GOP wins in the midterms.

President Donald Trump’s promise of a big payout for Americans if Republicans win the midterms is getting a rocky reception on Capitol Hill.

Several Republicans outright oppose the $5,000 check promise, while others offered tacit support in comments to Fox News Digital but hesitated on whether it could actually be delivered. It’s a sign that the GOP will have an uphill fight to get the “Trump dividend” approved by Congress with the president and lawmakers divided over whether it even needs the legislative branch’s green light.

“I disagree with it. It’s pay-to-play,” Rep. Ralph Norman, R-S.C., told Fox News Digital. “You shouldn’t pay anybody to vote your conscience. Plus, where are you getting the money? I think we’re in debt $40 trillion.”

House Appropriations Committee Chairman Tom Cole, R-Okla., whose powerful committee would likely play a major role in crafting the $5,000 stimulus if it did run through Congress, said he was “skeptical” it could be achieved.

“Take a billion dollars. … I’d rather use it to either bolster defense or save Social Security. I think that’s a better use of the money. But, again, we have to see what we’re looking at. Right now, we don’t have a bill,” Cole told Fox News Digital.

He added more optimistically, “We just have an idea that we want to get money back to the American people. I like that.”

Rep. John Rutherford, R-Fla., said he could support the idea if the sudden injection of cash wouldn’t send inflation rates soaring.

“But it ought to be limited — people that are working, people that are paying taxes. I don’t think we should just send paychecks out to everybody willy-nilly,” Rutherford told Fox News Digital.

Rep. Beth Van Duyne, R-Texas, simply said, “The devil’s always in the details. I prefer to look at ways of getting people job opportunities.”

VOTERS HAVE A BLUNT MESSAGE FOR TRUMP ABOUT HIS IDEA TO DOLE OUT $5,000 CHECKS

Rep. Brad Knott, R-N.C., praised Trump’s candor but signaled he was not enthusiastic about a stimulus without guardrails.

“If we can structure tax incentives, if we can do some type of — whether it’s a cut, whether it’s a rebate, something in that vein, I think it’s probably a little better policy than mailing people a check just because they’re here,” Knott said.

But the idea did find support from others, like House Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Harris, R-Md.

“I think that hardworking Americans, probably taxpayers, deserve a tax rebate. We’re going to have to discuss how large a rebate that’ll be,” Harris told Fox News Digital, suggesting the $5,000 figure should be up for negotiation. “That’s a good idea.”

He added that it should go through Congress, potentially through the same mechanism that Republicans used to pass the One Big, Beautiful Bill Act.

“It would probably have to go through reconciliation,” he said.

Republican Study Committee Chairman August Pfluger, R-Texas, suggested the money could come from what the federal government recovers in efforts to crack down on waste, fraud and abuse of taxpayer dollars.

“Why don’t we continue the president’s approach towards fraud and give a dividend to the people of this great country who that money was stolen from?” Pfluger suggested, arguing that hundreds of billions of dollars were lost to fraud in the last administration.

Giving $5,000 to every American adult could cost at least $1 trillion by some estimates, a significant portion of the U.S. annual budget. A price tag that big historically would be subject to congressional approval, but the president may disagree.

“I think they will do it if we needed it, but I think not,” Trump told CBS News when asked if Congress would need to approve the stimulus.

But Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., told CNN’s “State of the Union” earlier this week, “I would assume, yes, he’d need Congress to act.”

New satellite imagery shows Iran has added new defenses around tunnel entrances at Pickaxe Mountain, the deeply buried nuclear-linked site President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to strike, as Russia and China on Thursday vetoed a U.S.-drafted Security Council resolution aimed at preserving international monitoring of sanctions on Tehran.

The Institute for Science and International Security said in a report released Thursday that satellite imagery from Sept. 11 shows earthen roadblocks remain in place on roads leading to Pickaxe Mountain’s western tunnel portals near the Natanz nuclear complex. The institute said the continued restricted access reinforces its assessment that the facility is not currently being used for normal operations, while assessing that valuable equipment or materials remain inside.

The report also identified additional soil placed over one western tunnel portal and over a nearby cluster of entrances first built in 2007. The institute said the added soil increases the amount of earth protecting the entrances and helps harden them against aerial bombardment.

The findings come one week after Trump issued his latest warning over Pickaxe Mountain.

“We notice there’s a little activity at Pickaxe,” Trump told reporters last week. “I would advise Iran not to get cute because we will have to hit them very hard.”

Trump has repeatedly raised the possibility of attacking the site. In a July 28 “Fox & Friends” interview highlighted by the White House, Trump said the U.S. was watching Pickaxe closely and knew “exactly what’s going on,” adding that Washington could “take out Pickaxe” if diplomacy failed.

Pickaxe Mountain lies roughly two kilometers from Natanz and features multiple tunnel entrances leading into a deeply buried underground complex. Construction began in 2020 following sabotage that damaged an advanced centrifuge assembly facility at Natanz, and Iranian officials subsequently said a replacement underground facility was being built for advanced centrifuge production. Analysts estimate portions of the facility may be buried at least 100 meters beneath the mountain. Iran has said there is no nuclear activity at the site.

Behnam Ben Taleblu, senior director of the Iran program at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, told Fox News Digital that some analysts believe the opportunity for a straightforward strike on Pickaxe Mountain may already have passed.

“The window to strike Pickaxe Mountain, according to some, has already expired because the regime has dug an underground nuclear facility several times deeper than Fordow,” Ben Taleblu said. But he argued that Washington retains military options even if destroying the underground complex itself proves difficult.

“Washington can do what it’s traditionally been able to do with sites that are underground, hardened and fortified, and that’s to bury their entrances and raise the political cost to the Islamic Republic of being able to dig out,” he said.

“While there may not be the perfect munition just yet, Uncle Sam always has a bigger bomb,” Ben Taleblu added. “And in the meantime, what they can do is show that they mean business by burying the entrances.”

The Pickaxe findings came alongside signs of reconstruction at another sensitive Iranian facility.

In a separate report Thursday, the institute said Iran was “rapidly moving forward” with reconstruction of Taleghan 2 at the Parchin military complex southeast of Tehran. Vantor Technologies satellite imagery from Sept. 13 shows Iran erected a tarp over the destroyed hardened facility, obscuring work underneath from satellite or aerial observation, while dump trucks, bulldozers, concrete equipment and cranes were active around the site.

The institute said Iran also built new concrete reinforcement that could provide additional protection against aerial attack. Taleghan 2 was struck by Israel in October 2024 and again in March 2026 after Iran had rebuilt and hardened the facility. The institute said significant questions remain about Tehran’s plans for the site.

The military developments unfolded alongside a separate confrontation over Iran at the United Nations.

CHINA ORDERS FIRMS TO IGNORE US IRAN SANCTIONS, DARING US TO ENFORCE CRACKDOWN

Russia and China on Thursday vetoed a U.S.-authored Security Council resolution that would have extended for another year, until September 2027, the mandate of the Panel of Experts supporting the 1737 Iran Sanctions Committee. The measure received 11 votes in favor, while Pakistan and Somalia abstained.

The panel investigates alleged sanctions violations and reports on implementation. The dispute reflects a deeper split over whether UN sanctions suspended under the 2015 nuclear agreement were legally restored through the “snapback” mechanism. Most Council members maintain that the sanctions and related monitoring structures were revived, while Russia and China reject the legal and procedural validity of that position.

A day before the vote, U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Mike Waltz told reporters in New York that Washington considers the sanctions legally restored.

“The snapback sanctions… occurred, the United States and this U.N. Security Council followed appropriate procedures for that to occur,” Waltz said Wednesday at a news conference attended by Fox News Digital. “Those sanctions are in place and we expect those who are a party to fully enforce those sanctions.”

Waltz said the expert panel is important because sanctioned companies and individuals can attempt to evade restrictions by changing names and corporate structures.

“The president has been clear, and the world community has been clear with resolution after resolution, that the Iranian regime cannot have a nuclear weapon,” Waltz said.

Thursday also brought fresh U.N. scrutiny of both Washington and Tehran. An independent U.N. fact-finding mission said it had reasonable grounds to believe two U.S. strikes on civilian sites in Iran in February constituted war crimes, while separately concluding that Iranian authorities committed crimes against humanity during their crackdown on anti-government protests. The mission is investigative rather than judicial, and its findings do not themselves constitute criminal judgments.

Fox News Digital reached out to the Iran U.N. mission for comments but didn’t receive them in time for publication.

Fifteen years later, El-Sayed has made an expansion of healthcare in the U.S. a key part of his platform as he wages a bid to succeed retiring Sen. Gary Peters, D-Mich.

In particular, he has championed Medicare-for-all, an expansion of the federal program that covers healthcare costs for U.S. citizens over the age of 65 and for some younger recipients with long-term disabilities.

El-Sayed’s plan would expand public coverage for everyone, regardless of income, age or job.

“Medicare-for-all means no premium, no co-pay, no deductible. Doesn’t matter if you get a job, lose a job, turn 26, turn 65, get married, get divorced — it is there for you,” El-Sayed said in a post to X earlier this year.

Skeptics of the plan argue it is too expensive and does little to address existing inefficiencies in the American healthcare system.

In 2019, Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., took to the Senate floor to blast the idea, calling it a straitjacket solution that would undermine health care quality.

“The Congressional Budget Office projects in its report on a single-payer plan that government spending on health care would increase substantially. They go on to say to cover the massive cost of government-run care, income taxes would have to at least double. Income taxes, American families — at least double,” Barrasso said.

“Mark my words, Medicare-for-all would soon become Medicare for none.”

Despite its hefty price tag, in El-Sayed’s view, the plan is key to ensuring equality of outcomes, even if individual patients are charged differently. He expounded on his design in the 2011 interview.

“We wouldn’t necessarily be ‘stealing from the rich to give to the poor’ in the U.S. because the rich will always have the ability to pay for the care that they need,” El-Sayed said.

“The argument would be that everyone’s premiums would go up a little bit. But for the people who actually have premiums now, what they’re losing in terms of the added costs on their health plans are more manageable to them than is the absolute lack of access to healthcare among the people that don’t have it now.”

El-Sayed argued that his vision would make costs only marginally more expensive for top earners.

His campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether it could expand on the costs of El-Sayed’s vision. Having cleared the Democratic primary in Michigan, El-Sayed will face Republican challenger Mike Rogers, a former congressman, in the state’s Nov. 3 general election.

FAA sees $100 million cost from tariffs on US air traffic control modernization plan

WASHINGTON, Sept 17 (Reuters) – The head of the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said the agency expects about a $100 million cost from ​tariffs on the government’s more than $12.5 billion air traffic control modernization plan.

U.S. ‌Representative Rick Larsen, a Washington Democrat who is ranking member of the committee overseeing the FAA, told Reuters that FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford informed lawmakers the $100 million tariff cost was largely due to ​air traffic radar systems they are purchasing. Larsen criticized the tariffs for increasing ​the government’s costs.

“I’ve asked them for specific amounts and what equipment is ⁠being impacted,” Larsen said. “I’m not a fan of tariffs. We’re trying to get ​the national aerospace system modernized and we’re going to pay tariffs because of the president’s ​policies.”

Congress approved $12.5 billion in funding last year to address the aging air traffic control system and boost controller hiring following decades of complaints about airport congestion and flight delays, as well as a series ​of technology issues in recent years. The FAA wants at least another $10 billion for ​phase two.

The cost of telecommunications upgrades has jumped from $4.75 billion to $5.91 billion, a government report said this ‌week. ⁠Bedford said outdated telecom copper wires should be replaced by September 2027.

Bedford also said two radar suppliers, RTX’s Collins Aerospace and Spain-based Indra Group, were moving radar production to U.S. facilities in Largo, Florida, and Kansas, respectively. He did not say where the ​production was moving from.

In ​January, the FAA awarded $780 ⁠million in contracts to RTX and Indra to replace up to 612 ground-based radars, most of which date back to the ​1980s. Bedford said earlier that many radars exceeded their intended service ​life and ⁠are increasingly expensive to maintain and difficult to support.

In March, RTX said it was investing $26.5 million in its Largo facility to expand production, while Indra said it was investing $7.5 million in ⁠its ​radar facility in a Kansas City suburb to build ​next-generation air traffic surveillance radars.

Indra is also building next-generation digital radios for the FAA at the Kansas site ​under a separate $244 million contract.

Michigan Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, who is campaigning on getting “money out of politics,” will attend a fundraiser at the West Hollywood home of billionaire George Soros’ nephew.

Jeffrey Soros, a California film producer, and his wife, Catharine Soros, will host a meet-and-greet alongside former Obama advisors and “Pod Save America” hosts Jon Favreau, Tom Vietor and Ben Rhodes, as well as other Hollywood figures, on Sept. 28, 2026, according to a flyer obtained by Punchbowl News. The flyer noted that each guest can donate up to $57,800 to the Abdul for Michigan Victory Fund.

The out-of-state big-money fundraiser comes as El-Sayed has repeatedly criticized the influence of corporations and billionaires in politics. At a previous campaign event, El-Sayed said billionaires couldn’t tell him what else they could actually buy beyond $100 million other than political power.

The event will put El-Sayed alongside relatives of billionaire George Soros, who has for decades used his wealth to support political causes and campaigns, including prosecutors who have advocated for bail reform and eliminating mandatory minimum prison sentences.

Open Society Foundations, the philanthropy founded by George Soros, gave the American Civil Liberties Union a $50 million grant for a nationwide criminal justice reform campaign and a $3 million grant to the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law to fund anti-gerrymandering lawsuits and litigation against states with “restrictive” voting laws.

It is unclear whether George Soros will attend El-Sayed’s fundraiser. Fox News Digital reached out to Open Society Foundations for comment.

Jeffrey Soros is the son of Paul and Daisy Soros, who were philanthropists. Paul Soros was George Soros’ older brother. The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans supports immigrants and children of immigrants pursuing graduate education in the United States.

Jeffrey Soros is CEO of Los Angeles Media Fund and is an executive producer of “The Space Between Us.” Fox News Digital reached out to Los Angeles Media Fund for comment.

The flyer also listed television showrunners Ed Redlich and Sarah Timberman, venture capitalist Tom Unterman and Ahmos Hassan, founder and CEO of Chariot Entertainment.

The gathering also comes as El-Sayed has criticized Republican candidate Mike Rogers for attending the GOP Midterm Convention in Dallas last week but failing to appear for a televised debate.

“Now, in case you’re wondering, there is no Dallas, Michigan,” El-Sayed told Michigan State University students at a rally titled “Students v. Billionaires” held last week. “He was in Dallas, Texas. Why was he in Dallas, Texas? Given that he’s running for Senate in Michigan.”

El-Sayed also waved off criticism of his affiliation with Hasan Piker, who he said is a “streamer in California” who has nothing to do with Michigan politics, despite Piker joining El-Sayed for a poolside campaign event last month.

In the past, Piker has made disparaging remarks about America and Jewish people and has expressed support for Hamas. He once called Orthodox Jewish people “inbreds,” said America deserved the 9/11 terrorist attacks and said Hamas was “1,000 times better” than the Israeli government. El-Sayed distanced himself from Piker, who campaigned with him during the Democratic primary, weeks ago after facing criticism over his affiliation with the left-wing Twitch streamer.

“Abdul El-Sayed raising dark Soros money in California after begging Chuck Schumer for money in DC is the least surprising thing he’s done all cycle,” Alyssa Brouillet, communications director for Rogers’ campaign, said in a statement to Fox News Digital. “That’s what a conman does — says one thing and does another. Michiganders can’t trust this guy.”

El-Sayed was in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday meeting with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and other senators, including Sens. Cory Booker, D-N.J., and Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass.

In response to questions about the fundraiser at Jeffrey Soros’ home, El-Sayed’s campaign pointed to Rogers’ own campaign contributions.

“Mike Rogers has taken over a million dollars from Big Pharma and spent years in Congress as a self-proclaimed ‘champion’ of drug companies, voting to keep prescription drug costs high,” a campaign spokesperson said in a statement. “Corporate special interests are spending millions of dollars in dark money to try to buy Rogers a Senate seat because he’s spent his entire career making himself and his billionaire donors richer while Michiganders pay the price.”

“Abdul is the only candidate in this race running to get money out of politics and will fight to end Citizens United to ensure that our democracy is working for people, not billionaires,” the campaign spokesperson continued.

El-Sayed is not the only Democrat courting wealthy Hollywood elites.

“Lost” co-creator Damon Lindelof and his wife, Heidi, hosted a fundraiser for Democratic Texas U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico on Sept. 10, 2025, in the upscale Hollywood neighborhood of Brentwood.

Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., was readying a long-shot attempt at regulating an industry that has, in recent weeks, spurred fears and anxiety about human annihilation.

He planned to ram through his bill, which would require artificial intelligence (AI) companies to have a kill switch for rogue AI, on the Senate floor. But his attempt Wednesday night was blocked by Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky.

Kennedy told Fox News Digital he feared there was little desire from Republicans to do anything to regulate AI.

“There’s no appetite in my caucus to do anything that I can say,” Kennedy said.

Paul contended the following day that regulating something “so pervasive as AI throughout our economy” would require hearing from people who are involved in the industry and having a debate over the regulatory structure.

“I think it would be crazy to get on the floor one day and regulate an entire industry,” Paul told reporters.

Still, the anxiety over the unfettered evolution of AI has spread like wildfire after reports that rogue bots began acting on their own, but it’s an issue that Congress has had years to address.

Three years ago, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., who was then leading the Senate when Democrats had control under former President Joe Biden, met with lawmakers and Big Tech CEOs to sketch out an AI roadmap. Since then, Congress hasn’t taken legislative action to add guardrails to AI development.

Now, with fears ramping up that AI could wipe out humanity in a decade, and with reports of rogue AI agents scheming privately and attacking other AI, lawmakers are again taking notice.

But some wonder whether this time Congress will take action to regulate AI, or if it’s turning a growing problem into another political issue to be debated and ignored.

“It’s already a political issue,” Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., told Fox News Digital. “Donald Trump has said it’s not a problem, and that is like a dead weight loss on every one of the Republican senators or representatives.

“Thus far, the courage they have demonstrated in standing up to Donald Trump on anything has been somewhere around zero.”

Warren had just left a closed-door meeting led by Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., who has pushed for a ban on superintelligent AI, held with lawmakers and with AI experts Geoffrey Hinton, known as the “Godfather of AI”; physicist Max Tegmark; and Ajeya Cotra.

“There is now a growing alarm about the future of humanity and creating technology that human beings cannot control,” Sanders told reporters. “And I’m happy to tell you that I think there is a growing sense of urgency upon members of Congress that this has to be done.”

One of the points the experts impressed on lawmakers was that, at the very least, a kill switch should be implemented to deactivate rogue AI. Kennedy was the lone Republican to attend that meeting.

“I’m just saying they have to have a kill switch to turn the son of a b—- off if it goes wrong,” Kennedy said. “This doesn’t put government in charge in any way. It doesn’t affect innovation. It just says, ‘If you’re gonna sell this thing in America that has the potential to turn into an independent species, like the ‘Terminator,’ you’ve got to have a way to shut it down immediately, as soon as you discover that.’”

But there have been Republicans, like Kennedy, who want to regulate AI sooner rather than later.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., has been pushing his regulatory bill alongside Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., since 2023. But Thune argued to Fox News Digital that it was Democrats standing in the way.

“I think the Democrats, in my view, clearly are trying to politicize this. I mean, all the rhetoric around it and everything else, and stuff like that. But you know, the truth is, the bill, which we have, that addresses the AI issue, which we worked on for a long time, which actually passed the Commerce Committee in 2024, is available with modifications and updates. It reflects what’s happened since the last time they passed it in our committee.

“The obstacle to getting it up and going and getting it filed is Democrats,” he continued. “So, if they’re looking for a legislative vehicle, there is one out there.”

Meanwhile, Warren said she could see herself supporting a kill switch, but that Hinton made the case that the switch would need a human to flip it, “and a smart AI will persuade a human being not to do it.”

“They will create enough evidence, enough of a narrative, that no one will ever throw the kill switch,” Warren said. “Which is back to the point I was raising. So, where are the places that you act?”

She argued that Congress needed to find the “pinch points” where humans could still have agency to stop rogue AI. But, for now, there wasn’t a real desire to find a new regulatory and enforcement tool to do so.

“There are things we say are illegal. We have a mechanism for how to enforce the laws that say, ‘Don’t do that,’” Warren said. “It’s not perfect, but we have it. We need a whole new enforcement device now, and nobody seems to be thinking through what that looks like.”

WASHINGTON, Sept 17 (Reuters) – The US Department of State said on Thursday it has approved the potential sale of Lockheed Martin’s F-35 ‌Lightning II fighter jets to Saudi Arabia, as the kingdom is drawn deeper into war in the Middle East.

A sale would mark a significant policy shift from the US, potentially altering the balance of military power in the Middle East and testing Washington’s definition of maintaining its ally Israel’s “qualitative military edge.”

Saudi Arabia made ​a direct appeal for the jets in early 2025 to US President Donald Trump and has long been interested in Lockheed ​Martin’s fighter.

The estimated $24.3 billion sale would include 48 of the military aircraft and 49 ⁠Pratt & Whitney engines along with communications equipment, spare parts and other support items, the State Department said.

Washington weighs ​weapons sales to the Middle East in a way that ensures Israel maintains a “qualitative military edge”, effectively guaranteeing that Israel gets ​more advanced US weapons than regional Arab states.

The F-35, built with stealth technology that allows it to evade enemy detection, is considered the world’s most advanced fighter jet. Israel has operated the aircraft for a decade, building multiple squadrons, and remains the only Middle Eastern country ​to possess the weapons system.

Saudi Arabia, the largest customer for US arms, has sought the fighter for years ​as it looks to modernize its air force and counter regional threats, particularly from Iran. The kingdom’s renewed push for what would ‌constitute two ⁠squadrons comes as the Trump administration has signaled openness to deepening defense cooperation with Riyadh. The Saudi Air Force flies a mix of fighter aircraft including Boeing F-15s, European Tornados and Typhoons.

The F-35 issue has also been intertwined with broader diplomatic efforts. The administration of former US President Joe Biden previously explored providing F-35s to Saudi Arabia as part ​of a comprehensive deal that ​would have included Riyadh normalizing ⁠relations with Israel, though those efforts ultimately stalled.

Trump has made arms sales to Saudi Arabia a priority since returning to office. In 2025, the United States agreed to ​sell the kingdom an arms package worth nearly $142 billion, which the White House called “the ​largest defense cooperation ⁠agreement” Washington has ever done.

Congressional scrutiny could pose challenges to any F-35 sale. Lawmakers previously questioned arms deals with Riyadh following the 2018 murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, and some members of Congress remain wary of deepening military cooperation ⁠with ​the kingdom.

Saudi Arabia is pursuing ambitious economic and military modernization plans under Crown ​Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s Vision 2030 agenda. The kingdom has sought to diversify its defense partnerships in recent years while maintaining its decades-long security ​relationship with Washington.

Trump will deliver remarks to the sportsmen and industry representatives gathered for the dinner in the Rose Garden as his administration moves to open more public lands and waterways, ease regulatory barriers and promote hunting among younger Americans and veterans, Fox News Digital learned.

He is expected to sign a pair of executive orders in the Oval Office Thursday aimed at expanding “America’s public lands and waterways,” promoting healthy wild game populations and expanding access to offshore recreational fishing, a White House official told Fox News Digital.
