Sept 15 (Reuters) – U.S. military forces and ​FBI agents boarded ‌a Texas-bound oil tanker to investigate ​a cyberattack ​on August 21, Bloomberg ⁠News reported ​on Tuesday, citing ​the U.S. Coast Guard.

Coast Guard personnel and ​the Federal ​Bureau of Investigation boarded ‌the ⁠foreign-flagged vessel following indications its network had been ​compromised ​by ⁠overseas cyber actors, the ​report said, ​citing ⁠a Coast Guard spokesperson.

Trump keeps up attacks on mail voting, but election officials more confident

Sept 15 (Reuters) – The U.S. Supreme Court’s rejection of President Donald Trump’s bid to restrict mail-in ballots is unlikely to stop his attacks on voting by mail, voting-rights advocates and election officials said on Tuesday, though they are more ​confident now those efforts will not disrupt November’s midterm elections.

“I was more scared a year ago than I am ‌now,” said Hannah Fried, executive director of All Voting Is Local, a voting-rights advocacy group, after the Supreme Court on Monday blocked Trump’s attempt to impose new restrictions on mail-in ballots that election officials feared would cause chaos in the run-up to the midterms.

But, she still expected Trump to falsely claim that ​bail-in ballots were vulnerable to widespread fraud, an assertion that election officials and the courts have repeatedly found lacks evidence.

In ​a Truth Social post on Tuesday lashing out at the Supreme Court ruling, Trump said the ⁠U.S. had a “totally CORRUPT and out of control Mail-in voting ‘disaster.’”

Trump’s proposed new regulation would have required states to provide voter-specific data and ​use Postal Service-approved mail-ballot envelopes that would be tracked using barcodes. The Postal Service could then refuse to send out ballots that ​did not comply with the new standards or were associated with voters who do not appear on the lists.

Mail voting is deeply embedded in how Americans cast ballots. Some 47 million people, roughly 32% of the electorate, voted by mail in the 2024 presidential election, according to the U.S. Election Assistance ​Commission. Nationally, mail voting skews Democratic: 37% of Democrats and 24% of Republicans voted by mail in 2024, per the MIT Election ​Data and Science Lab.

David Becker, executive director of the nonpartisan Center for Election Innovation and Research, said Trump’s false claims about mail-in voting have created ‌unnecessary challenges ⁠for local election officials. Still, he noted that this year’s party primaries had all gone smoothly, despite months of attacks on voting by mail.

Asked if he feared Trump’s rhetoric could inject chaos into the electoral process, Becker said “I’m actually rather confident it won’t.”

Celina Stewart, CEO of the League of Women Voters, said the organization’s staff and volunteers were speaking with voters in all 50 states and that, ​if anything, Trump’s attacks on ​mail-in voting appeared to be ⁠motivating more people to make concrete plans to cast a ballot, whether by mail or in person.

Matt Dole, a Republican strategist in Ohio, said that despite Trump’s rhetoric on the issue, he did not ​anticipate widespread claims of fraud in the midterms.

Lisa Brown, clerk of Michigan’s Oakland County, the chief ​election administrator, said ⁠voters’ main worry was simply whether mail voting would remain an option, not its legitimacy.

Asked whether she was concerned Trump had laid the groundwork to claim fraud in November should his party lose control of one or both chambers of Congress, Brown noted that his previous allegations ⁠were never ​substantiated.

“He made claims of fraud in 2020. There was never any proof of ​that. That election was accurate, secure, and fair,” she said. “He can make whatever claims he wants. It doesn’t change how secure and accurate our process is.”

US House committee recommends contempt of Congress for Leon Black in Epstein probe

NEW YORK, Sept 15 (Reuters) – The U.S. House of Representatives Oversight Committee voted to recommend holding Leon ​Black in contempt of Congress on Tuesday, after the Wall Street ‌billionaire declined to comply with subpoenas as part of a probe into the activities of late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Black, who co-founded private equity giant Apollo Global Management (APO.N), is ​among several prominent political and business figures who have been called to testify ​about their ties to the late financier.

The 41-0 committee ⁠vote sets up a vote by the full House to refer the ​case to the Justice Department for possible prosecution under a simple majority ​threshold. Contempt of Congress is a misdemeanor charge that carries up to a year in prison and a fine of up to $100,000.

Black gave up his role as Apollo ​chief executive in 2021 after an external law firm found he had ​paid Epstein $158 million for tax and estate planning.

He sued the committee this month and declined ‌to ⁠appear at a deposition. The deposition was scheduled after a voluntary appearance in June during which Black told the committee he never abused women or engaged in sex trafficking and had never had sex with underage women. ​He denies knowledge of ​Epstein’s conduct.

He ⁠walked out during the June interview, according to members of the committee, who ordered him to come back ​to testify under oath and then issued subpoenas for documents.

​Black’s lawyers ⁠said on Tuesday the contempt resolution showed the committee had “lost sight of its legislative purpose and (was) abusing its power”, adding they had written to ask ⁠the Office ​of Congressional Conduct to investigate Comer.

Epstein ​was found dead in a New York City jail cell in 2019, and his death was ​ruled a suicide.

WASHINGTON, Sept 15 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump’s administration on Tuesday appealed a federal court’s ruling blocking the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency from sending landmark California vehicle ​emissions rules to the Republican-controlled U.S. Congress seeking a fast-track repeal.

On September 2, U.S. District ‌Judge Beryl Howell in Washington ruled the EPA had acted improperly by sending four waivers in June to Congress for review, including rules enacting stricter emissions standards for cars and trucks as ​well as for lawn-and-garden equipment.

The Trump administration has mounted a multi-pronged effort ​to deny California the ability to require cleaner and more electric ⁠vehicles. The EPA and Congress have also enacted rules making it easier for automakers ​to sell more gasoline-powered cars and trucks, while making it more expensive to buy ​EVs.

If the Trump administration is successful, it would bar California indefinitely from regulating tailpipe emissions and a future Democratic president would be unable to easily reinstate its regulatory powers.

In June, the ​EPA said the vehicle emissions waivers granted to California under prior Democratic administrations should ​have been sent to lawmakers under the Congressional Review Act, which would allow the U.S. Senate ‌to ⁠repeal them by a simple majority rather than the 60 votes needed for most legislation.

The CRA allows only regulations to be repealed. California sued to block the action in federal court, saying it was illegal to send the waivers to the Senate ​under the CRA since ​they were waivers ⁠and not regulations.

Separately, the U.S. House of Representatives is set to vote as soon as this week to repeal California ​environmental rules on ocean-going vessels and commercial harbor craft, despite Howell’s ​ruling Friday ⁠that declared the EPA’s transmission of those rules to Congress in July improper.

Last year, Congress rescinded authority for California to outlaw gasoline-powered vehicles after 2035. Toyota, General Motors ⁠and other ​automakers had lobbied for relief from the state’s ​emissions regulations.

The action came after the EPA sent the waivers to Congress for repeal. A separate legal ​challenge from California on that action is pending.

ChatGPT maker OpenAI supports parts of a bipartisan bill in Congress that would require the largest AI companies to submit their large language models to independent audits, according to Chris Lehane, the company’s chief global affairs officer.

OpenAI has previously backed state legislation to regulate AI, but this marks the first time the company has thrown its weight behind a federal mandate that would require a third-party group to assess AI developers’ work.

Lehane expressed support for the proposal, which is included in a bill now before lawmakers called the FRONTIER Act, during a roundtable with lawmakers in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, an OpenAI spokesperson told CBS News.

Specifically, an independent organization would have to determine that an AI company’s safety protocols are sufficiently rigorous to mitigate what the bill describes as “acceptable levels of catastrophic risk.”

Lehane’s comments come as AI researchers and developers warn about the potential for advanced AI to inflict harm on people.

Patrolling frontier models

The FRONTIER Act, sponsored by Reps. Jay Obernolte, a Republican from California, and Lori Trahan, a Democrat from Massachusetts, would also require AI developers to publish reports on their models and disclose safety incidents.

Although OpenAI supports third-party audits of AI models, the company hasn’t endorsed the bill in its entirety, the spokesperson noted.

In a Sept. 9 blog post, Lehane called for regulatory action to control AI development. OpenAI is calling for Congress to enact mandatory national AI safety requirements and advocates that leading AI developers collaborate to develop industry standards.

“The stakes are enormous. Advanced AI could accelerate the development of new medicines, strengthen critical infrastructure, expand economic opportunity, and help solve scientific problems that have resisted generations of human effort,” Lehane wrote. “But the capabilities that make models more useful also come with risks, and they will not remain confined to a few frontier laboratories.”

Joseph Miller, an AI safety researcher and founder of PauseAI UK, a group that supports slowing AI development, said that the public debate over how to control potential AI risks is long overdue. He also thinks leading AI developers are unlikely to take sufficiently strong measures to safeguard their technology absent government intervention.

“We need government to lead on it, because they probably aren’t going to do it without the government stepping in,” Miller told CBS News.

Americans have had to shell out more to fill up their cars in recent months as the war with Iran drives up prices at the pump. But those expenses go far beyond fuel.

“The rising cost of car ownership has been the big shocker of the inflation crisis,” Heather Long, a chief economist at Navy Federal Credit Union, told CBS News.

An analysis by the credit union found that car ownership costs have risen 50% since 2020. The main reason isn’t pricier fuel, but rather higher repair costs, which have surged 70% in the last five years, according to Long.

Repair costs average around $1,750 for a new car for the first five years of ownership, according to AAA data.

“Repair costs can be hundreds of dollars, if not thousands of dollars,” Long said. “So in many ways, those are the hidden costs.”

The other primary factors driving up the financial burden of having a car are rising auto insurance rates and higher routine maintenance costs, followed by the jump in gas prices, according to Navy Federal Credit Union.

The average cost of car insurance in 2026 is $2,124 per year for full coverage and $816 annually for minimum coverage, according to LendingTree.

People are holding on to their cars for longer, which often leads to higher service charges, Long said. The overall fleet age for passenger cars in the U.S. was 14.5 years in 2025, according to the Transportation Department.

Long said cars now have more electronic parts and sensors, which are more expensive to repair. A shortage of mechanics also allows them to charge more for their services.

“Good mechanics can really write their own price these days, and they’re doing it,” she said.

Gasoline still represents a core cost for American motorists, who are now paying an average of $4.33 at the pump, according to AAA, up 45% since the Iran war started in late February.

The cost to own and operate a new vehicle is $12,863 per year, or $1,071.92 per month, according to a separate analysis by AAA.

Ed Sheeran’s supporting acts pull out of tour after Macklemore was dropped over pro-Palestinian comments

Several supporting acts quit Ed Sheeran’s tour on Tuesday after the rapper Macklemore was removed for pro-Palestinian comments he made during a concert in New Jersey.

Hours after Sheeran posted on social media about Macklemore’s ouster and attributed the decision to the tour’s promoters, Aaron Rowe, Beoga, Finneas, and Danish band Lukas Graham posted on Instagram that they would withdraw from Sheeran’s tour.

Rowe and Lukas Graham would have been replacements for Macklemore on Sheeran’s remaining U.S. dates, while Beoga had been performing several songs — including some the Irish folk band co-wrote — with Sheeran around the middle of each set. Finneas, who is Billie Eilish’s brother and musical collaborator, was due to tour with Sheeran in South America later this year.

The moves by his fellow artists put enormous pressure on Sheeran, who has tried to avoid politics and taking a side in the Gaza conflict, arguing that his fans don’t come to his shows to hear politics.

Macklemore said Monday on Instagram that several U.S. venues told the promoter they would prohibit him from performing as Sheeran’s opening act, rallied by Robert Kraft, owner of the NFL’s New England Patriots. His Kraft Group also owns Gillette Stadium, where the Patriots play.

In a statement Monday, Kraft said the decision to cancel Macklemore was a result of his recent comments “and a broader history of antisemitic rhetoric and imagery that we believe has been deeply offensive and hurtful to the Jewish community.”

Rowe and Beoga each cited their country’s history in their statements explaining their decision to withdraw from the tour.

Rowe, in his statement, wrote, “As Irish people we know all too well about genocide, forced famine and violent occupation. I cannot stand by and allow billionaires to use their position of power to silence the rightful voices of those who speak up against Israeli genocide and who highlight the savage murder of children.”

He ended his message with “free Palestine.”

Beoga said it was dropping out over “the silencing of Macklemore by zionist lobbies.”

“We believe in dialogue as a means of progressing the plight of the Palestinian people,” the band wrote.

Finneas said in his statement, “Artists must not be silenced when they speak up for the oppressed,” adding, “I stand with Palestine and its people.”

Lukas Graham said it was “hard to watch families in other parts of the world burying the people they love. We should be able to speak about war, about civilians being killed, about children who deserve to grow up. Wherever they live. Whatever flag flies over them.”

“Money doesn’t give you the right to own the conversation. Nobody’s bank balance should decide who gets to speak or which suffering we’re allowed to acknowledge,” the duo added. They ended their statement with three images of watermelon, which has become a symbol of Palestinian solidarity.

Sheeran has insisted the decision to drop Macklemore as his opening act was made by the promoters alone. The British singer also said he refused to be drawn into a public discussion about the war in Gaza.

“Macklemore coming off tour was the promoter’s decision, it was not mine,” Sheeran wrote on Instagram on Tuesday. “I would never let down the fans who had made plans, nor would I abandon the touring crew and the other support acts and musicians who rely on me for work and to make a living.”

The tour’s promoter, the Messina Touring Group, did not immediately respond to CBS News’ requests for comment Tuesday. Macklemore’s publicist also did not immediately respond.

Sheeran’s statement came a day after Macklemore said he was kicked off the Loop Tour after exclaiming “Free Palestine!” during the Sept. 5 date at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium while introducing his protest song “Hind’s Hall” — a reference to the student protests over the Gaza war that took place at Columbia University in New York City.

“To all of my Jewish brothers and sisters, criticism of Israel, criticism of apartheid, being against genocide, it in no way is criticism of you,” Macklemore said during the concert.

Macklemore, in his statement on social media, insisted: “Antisemitism is real. And that is exactly why the word matters too much to be used as a shield against criticism of the Israeli state. When criticizing Israel, opposing Zionism or saying ‘Free Palestine’ gets conflated with hatred of Jewish people, it doesn’t protect Jewish people. It protects Israel from accountability.”

Sheeran said in his latest post that he “spoke with the venues at length all week to try to build a bridge,” but that “the venue’s and promoter’s decision was final.”

A growing chorus of organizations and experts say Israel’s wartime actions in Gaza amount to genocide — an accusation Israel vehemently rejects.

Macklemore was scheduled to perform at eight of the 10 shows Sheeran has remaining on his stadium tour, which is scheduled to resume Saturday in Philadelphia. Ahead are stops at Gillette Stadium, Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium, AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, and Indianapolis’ Lucas Oil Stadium.

In his social media statement, Sheeran said he tries to use his music to “bring people from all backgrounds and cultures together” and that while he has personal views about “this devastating conflict,” he chooses not to speak publicly because people who come to his shows “do not expect a political forum.” He added: “I am not complicit.”

“I respect Macklemore’s strength of purpose to stand up and shout for what he believes,” Sheeran added. “However, there is room for multiple approaches to the same end: peace. I choose to use my fame and platform to be a place of safety and sanctuary, to maintain diplomacy and keep conversations open, not closed.”

US nuclear regulator’s overhaul of rules to run well into 2027, its chief says

VIENNA, Sept 15 (Reuters) – The U.S. nuclear power ​regulator’s overhaul of rules, part of a push to cut approval times for new reactors to ‌18 months, will continue well into next year, its chairman told Reuters on Tuesday, as the Trump administration seeks to quadruple the country’s nuclear capacity by 2050.

To help meet power demand surging from electric vehicles, data centers and crypto mining, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission ​is making a series of changes aimed at streamlining the licensing of new facilities. It has ​already proposed narrowing the scope of environmental reviews and changing a rule protecting people from ⁠radiation.

“I would say well into next year,” NRC Chairman Ho Nieh said in an interview on the sidelines ​of the U.N. nuclear watchdog’s General Conference, an annual meeting of member states, when asked how much longer ​the overhaul would continue.

“You’re going to see some final rules be published in the Federal Register toward the end of this year, into early next year, and deeper into next calendar year,” he added.

Further planned changes include a regulatory framework for microreactors, tiny ​factory-built nuclear plants that developers say will be easily transported, and which the U.S. Army hopes will one ​day power remote installations.

The NRC is getting closer to its target of approving new facilities within 18 months, but will not ‌do ⁠so at any cost, he said.

“Those are timelines we are challenging ourselves to meet, but we will not issue a decision if it’s not safe. And if it’s something that has to take more time, we will take more time to do it. I trust staff to exercise those judgments in doing that,” he said.

Licensing ​approvals for new nuclear facilities have ​previously taken several years.

NRC ⁠DEFENDS INDEPENDENCE

Trump last year signed four executive orders on nuclear power that seek to shorten the approval time.

In a report on global nuclear security published on Tuesday, the ​Nuclear Threat Initiative, a think tank, said the orders had “compromised the political independence ​and oversight authority” ⁠of the NRC by, among other things, requiring changes in regulation to be submitted to the White House for approval.

Nieh rejected that assertion.

“There is no reduction in our independence. We are part of the federal government. Like all ⁠executive branch ​agencies, we follow the general policies set by the administration,” ​Nieh said.

“We make and we own our regulatory decisions, and that hasn’t changed. So I know it’s provocative to say that the NRC ​is not independent, but I reject that assertion because I’m in it. I see what’s happening.”

The deportation completes a dramatic reversal from Charles’ arrest in Massachusetts on Jan. 22, 2025, when Fox News cameras captured him insisting he would not be returned to Haiti.

“I’m not going back to Haiti … you feel me?” Charles said during the arrest. “F— Trump,” he added. “Biden forever bro.”

Fox News witnessed the arrest as ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations officers took Charles into custody in Massachusetts, just days after Trump returned to the White House.

DHS identifies Charles as a member of the Back Block Money Gang and says he had accumulated 17 criminal convictions.

His criminal history included convictions for assault and battery on a public employee, resisting arrest, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, possession with intent to distribute a Class D controlled substance, possession of controlled substances, carrying a dangerous weapon, carrying ammunition without a firearm identification card and trespassing, according to DHS.

Charles remained in federal custody for approximately 19 months after his arrest as his immigration case proceeded.

A Department of Justice (DOJ) immigration judge issued Charles a final order of removal on Nov. 7, 2025, according to DHS.

DHS publicly announced Charles’ deportation after Fox News obtained details of his removal, specifically referencing the viral video of Charles praising former President Joe Biden during his arrest.

“This illegal alien gang member from Haiti had quite the rap sheet,” DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin said in a statement, citing Charles’ convictions for assault and battery on a public employee, resisting arrest and drug trafficking.

Mullin also criticized the immigration policies of the Obama and Biden administrations and credited the Trump administration with carrying out Charles’ removal.

“Once again: if you’re here illegally, we will find you, arrest you, and remove you from the United States of America,” Mullin said.

DHS said Charles had originally received Temporary Protected Status (TPS) during the Obama administration in February 2013, and was admitted to the U.S. in July of that year, according to DHS.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services terminated his TPS in July 2022, according to DHS.

The White House separately provided Fox News with a statement following Charles’ deportation.

“This gang member and criminal illegal alien loved Obama, Biden, and open-border Democrats who let him enter our country with TPS and allowed him to terrorize American citizens,” White House spokeswoman Lauren Bis said.

“Thanks to the Trump administration, he is now off our streets and back in Haiti,” she continued, while contrasting Trump’s immigration enforcement policies with those of Democrats.

DHS also posted a tongue-in-cheek photo of President Donald Trump at his viral McDonald’s campaign trail stop waving goodbye to accompany the news.

The deportation came more than a year and a half after Charles predicted the opposite as ICE officers placed him under arrest in front of Fox News cameras.

“I’m not going back to Haiti,” he said at the time.

Charles was deported by ICE to Haiti on Thursday, DHS said.

American households earned a record median income of $87,460 last year, according to new Census Bureau data. The catch? That figure is only slightly above the previous peak set in 2019.

Adjusting for inflation, that means the typical household has gained little economic ground in six years marked by pandemic upheaval and surging consumer prices. In 2019, households had a median income of $85,320, a level that wasn’t surpassed until 2025, the Census said on Tuesday.

While the new data indicates that Americans’ incomes have continued to climb, it also shows that the typical household in 2025 earned only about 2.5% more than in 2019. By comparison, median household income climbed 19% during the six years before the pandemic, from 2013 to 2019.

The Census report also showed that women’s paychecks rose 3.2% last year, while men’s declined slightly. The solid gain for women narrowed the gender wage gap, though it remains large, with women earning nearly 84 cents for every dollar earned by men, up from less than 81 cents in 2024.

Declining poverty rate

The Census figures also may reflect some tax changes implemented under the “One Big Beautiful Bill” act, or OBBBA, which President Trump signed into law in July 2025. High-income households and corporations were among those that received the biggest benefits from its tax cuts, according to tax experts.

The top 10% of earners reported income growth of 1.7% last year to $261,300, while the poorest one-tenth reported a slight decline to just over $20,000, according to the Census Bureau.

“It’s notable that the median income for the top earners is increasing, while income for the lowest earners is stagnant,” said Kristin Seefeldt, associate professor of social work and public policy at the University of Michigan, in an email. “The tax code has been revised to lower marginal tax rates for everybody, and we see the top earners benefiting from that.”

Last year, the official U.S. poverty rate fell 0.5 percentage points to 10.2%. Some public policy experts cautioned that the impact from OBBBA’s cuts to social safety net programs may not appear until the Census reports on 2026 income and poverty rates, which will be released in 2027.

OBBBA instituted new restrictions to Medicaid and food stamps, with the latter program reporting a sharp decline in enrollment in 2026.

“The poverty numbers look pretty good — especially child poverty — but these numbers do not reflect cuts in benefits that started to take effect at the start of 2026,” said Amanda Nothaft, director of data and analysis at the University of Michigan’s Poverty Solutions.
