Hair sample found at Nancy Guthrie’s home inconclusive as search for missing mother hits 6-month mark

    July 30, 2026 7:14 PM EDT / CBS News

    By Jonathan Vigliotti, Amanda Arden

A hair sample that underwent forensic testing after being found at the Tucson, Arizona, home of Nancy Guthrie, the missing mother of “Today” show co-host Savannah Guthrie, came back inconclusive and did not point to a suspect, the sheriff overseeing the local investigation told CBS News on Thursday.

“It came back with no results,” Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said. The sheriff’s department said the results from the hair sample were verified in early June. Thursday was the first time they shared that information publicly.

Nanos noted there was blood and other DNA found at the scene that is also still being analyzed, but has so far also yielded no results.

“I know that there was blood at the scene and so that was also part of the processing of the scene,” Nanos said.

CBS News previously reported in May that a DNA sample that was sent by sheriff’s detectives to a private laboratory in Florida was then forwarded to the FBI’s crime lab in Quantico, Virginia. Officials did not confirm, however, any details about that sample or whether it was the hair sample in question.

“We have a lot of DNA that is being looked at by credible scientists around the country who know and understand what they have in front of them and they understand the rules that they have to play by,” Nanos said.

Nancy Guthrie, 84, was last seen on the evening of Jan. 31 when she was dropped off after dining at the home of her daughter Annie. Security video from Nancy Guthrie’s home showed a suspect at her front door in the early morning hours of Feb. 1.

Investigators have said they believe Guthrie was likely abducted, and at least two ransom notes were sent in the days after she went missing.

“Even when a case goes cold, we don’t give up on it,” Nanos said. “We continue to work it. This one’s far from being cold. God forbid this ever takes 50 years, but it could.”

Other than the surveillance video from Guthrie’s home that was released earlier in the investigation, no new video has been recovered. And it appears the suspect or suspects evaded traffic cameras.

Asked if he believes the suspects could be local to the Tucson area, Nanos said “absolutely.”

“Do I have evidence of it? No,” Nanos said. “But let’s look at crime across the country, around the world, who by far, 90%, 95% of your criminals are where? Right here locally.”

On Monday, Savannah Guthrie posted a video to social media directed at her mother’s kidnappers.

“So I’m asking you, begging you to do the right thing now,” she said in the clip. “Make the right choice. Help us find her. Tell us where to look for her. I truly believe it is never too late to do the right thing.”

The sheriff on Thursday also addressed the criticism that was previously levied against him by FBI Director Kash Patel, who claimed the sheriff’s department was slow to involve the FBI in the case.

“I’ve never talked to him,” Nanos said of Patel. “No, I have no reason to. If I needed him, I’m sure I could talk to him. What I need is to know that his team and my team are working close together and that absolutely they are and they have been for decades.”

Nanos said he is optimistic that the case will be resolved “based on all the evidence before me.”

“The bottom line here is this: We know more than you will ever know, because that’s how investigations work,” he said.

    Made with Flourish•Create a chart

    Made with Flourish•Create a chart

    Made with Flourish·Create a chart

    Made with Flourish·Create a chart

    Made with Flourish·Create a chart

    Made with Flourish·Create a chart

    Made with Flourish·Create a chart

President Donald Trump won the Lone Star state by nearly 14 percentage points in 2024, but a new Fox News Poll of Texas registered voters suggests this year’s Senate race is far less settled. Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton has yet to fully unify the GOP despite the president’s endorsement in the GOP primary against incumbent Sen. John Cornyn.

In addition, more voters are concerned Paxton lacks the character to serve than worry Democratic challenger James Talarico is too extreme, and more Democrats than Republicans are extremely motivated to vote (by 7 points) and extremely interested in the midterms (by 6).

Those dynamics give Talarico a 3-point edge over Paxton (51% vs. 48%) in the Senate contest (within the survey’s margin of sampling error).

Talarico’s advantage in the race grows to 6 points among both extremely motivated and extremely interested voters (53% vs. 47% in each group).

FOX NEWS POLL: DEMOCRATIC ENTHUSIASM SHAPES NORTH CAROLINA SENATE RACE

Most independents (68%) and virtually all Democrats support Talarico (98%), while fewer Republicans are unified behind Paxton (89%).

In part, that’s because one quarter of non-MAGA Republicans back Talarico (24%).

Paxton is the choice among White evangelical Christians, White men without a college degree, rural voters, regular worship attenders, men and voters ages 65 and older.

Some of Talarico’s best groups are Black voters, moderates, voters under age 30, Hispanic voters, women and voters with a college degree.

    Made with Flourish•Create a chart

“Although Paxton dominated Cornyn in the GOP primary, that bruising contest left scars,” said Republican pollster Daron Shaw, who conducts Fox News polls with Democrat Chris Anderson.

“He has considerable work to do with non-MAGA Republicans and independents, and that undoubtedly requires aggressively tying Talarico to the Democratic Party’s far left.”

By a 12-point margin, more voters are concerned Paxton lacks the character to serve as a senator than believe Talarico is too extreme (59% vs. 47%).

Twice as many Republicans are concerned about Paxton’s character as Democrats are that Talarico is too extreme (36% vs. 17%).

FOX NEWS POLL: COOL YOUR SERVERS! VOTERS REJECT DATA CENTERS

    Made with Flourish•Create a chart

Still, about 8 in 10 Paxton and Talarico supporters say their backing is more about where the candidates stand on the issues than who they are as people.

Trump received a 55% favorable vs. 44% unfavorable rating in the 2024 Texas Fox News Voter Analysis (FNVA) election survey. Today, those numbers have flipped: 45% favorable vs. 54% unfavorable, for a minus-9 net negative rating.

Paxton garners a minus-6 net personal rating, 45% favorable vs. 51% unfavorable, while Talarico is in positive territory by 6 points, 49% vs. 43%.

Talarico is more popular than the Democratic Party while the GOP edges out Paxton.

While both parties are viewed negatively, the GOP is underwater by only 2 points (48% favorable vs. 50% unfavorable), compared with the Democratic Party at minus-9 (45% vs. 54%).

    Made with Flourish•Create a chart

Despite Texas being a border state, nearly 4 in 10 say inflation will be the most important issue to their Senate vote, while 2 in 10 say immigration and 1 in 10 say healthcare, political divisions and unemployment.

    Made with Flourish•Create a chart

By more than a 2-to-1 margin, Texas voters say they are falling behind financially rather than getting ahead (35% vs. 16%). Half are holding steady.

In the race for governor, incumbent Republican Gov. Greg Abbott is favored by 1 point over Democrat Gina Hinojosa.

    Made with Flourish•Create a chart

Part of Abbott’s edge comes from a touch more crossover support: 12% of Talarico supporters back Abbott, while 9% of Paxton supporters back Hinojosa.

Hinojosa has the advantage among extremely motivated (+6) and extremely interested voters (+5).

    Made with Flourish•Create a chart

Abbott has a net positive personal rating by a single point (50% favorable vs. 49% unfavorable). Hinojosa is in positive territory by 11 points (45% vs. 34%), although nearly 1 in 5 are unable to rate her.

Texas last elected a Democratic governor in 1990 (Ann Richards), a Democratic Senator in 1988 (Lloyd Bentsen), and a Democratic presidential candidate in 1976 (Jimmy Carter).

A closer look at the Hispanic electorate

Hispanic voters say their Senate pick will be driven by inflation, as roughly 4 in 10 say it will be the most important issue to their vote and another 4 in 10 say they’re falling behind financially. This mostly matches views among all Texas voters.

And as is the case with voters overall, there is an enthusiasm gap, as more Hispanic Democrats than Hispanic Republicans are interested and motivated to vote in the midterms.

Overall, Hispanic voters prefer Talarico by 18 points (59% vs. 41%).

Some 9% of Hispanic GOP voters crossover to support Talarico while 5% of Hispanic Democrats favor Paxton.

In 2024, Trump topped former Vice President Kamala Harris among Hispanic voters in Texas by 1 point, according to the Texas FNVA survey (49% Harris vs. 50% Trump).

By 20 points, more Hispanic voters are concerned that Paxton lacks the character to serve as senator than feel Talarico is too extreme (61% concerned vs. 41%).

For the governor’s race, Hispanic voters back Hinojosa by 16 points in the new survey. By comparison, they preferred Beto O’Rourke over Abbott by 14 points in 2022.

More than half of Hispanic voters view Talarico (57% favorable), Hinojosa (53%), and the Democratic Party (53%) positively, while more than half have negative views of Paxton (56% unfavorable), Abbott (56%), Trump (61%), and the Republican Party (59%).

Conducted July 23-27, 2026, under the direction of Beacon Research (D) and Shaw & Company Research (R), this Fox News survey includes interviews with a sample of 1,006 Texas registered voters randomly selected from a statewide voter file. Respondents spoke with live interviewers on landlines (72) and cellphones (681) or completed the survey online after receiving a text (253). Results based on the full sample have a margin of sampling error of ±3 percentage points.

The survey includes an oversample of 296 Hispanic voters, bringing the sample size for that subgroup to 556 (±4). Sampling error for results among subgroups is higher. In addition to sampling errors, question wording and order can influence results. Weights are generally applied to age, race, education and area variables to ensure the demographics are representative of the registered voter population. Sources for developing weight targets include the most recent American Community Survey, Fox News Voter Analysis and voter file data.

President Donald Trump on Thursday announced what he described as a historic agreement to secure the disarmament of Hamas and all other armed groups in Gaza.

As of early Thursday evening, Hamas had not confirmed the deal. CNN has reached out for comment.

“Today, the Board of Peace reached a HISTORIC agreement for the COMPLETE DISARMAMENT of Hamas and all other armed groups in Gaza,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post. “This is a monumental step toward lasting PEACE and SECURITY.”

Disarming Hamas is a critical step in implementing Trump’s multi-phase peace plan to end the war in Gaza and moving to set up a technocratic government for the strip. Mediators have been trying to negotiate with Hamas for months on implanting the plan, but there is skepticism in the region that Hamas will hold up its end of the bargain.

Earlier this month, Hamas announced that it would dissolve its government in Gaza, a move that experts say put pressure on Israel as progress from the US-brokered ceasefire plan stalled. Their statement on the move made no mention of disarmament.

CNN has reached out to the Israeli prime minister’s office for comment.

Trump said the agreement would pave the way for Gaza to be governed by “a new Palestinian government” working alongside his Board of Peace, while ensuring “Israel will have the security it deserves, with Gaza no longer used as a base for terror attacks.”

Trump asserted that the agreement would be implemented in phases. As armed groups are disarmed, he wrote, Israeli forces will withdraw and an International Stabilization Force, working alongside a new Palestinian police force, will assume responsibility for security in Gaza.

The president thanked mediators from Egypt, Qatar and Turkey, as well as his administration, for helping broker the agreement.

“The threat that emerged from Gaza on October 7 will NOT be allowed to rebuild!” Trump wrote, adding, “Under this agreement, Gaza will finally be in the hands of a new Palestinian government that serves its PEOPLE.”

“CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL ON THIS AMAZING DEVELOPMENT, THAT EVERYBODY SAID COULD NEVER BE ACHIEVED!” Trump concluded.

Stolen Civil War-era cannonballs found in suitcase at Alabama airport

    July 30, 2026 / 7:27 PM EDT / CBS/AP

A TSA agent discovered a set of stolen Civil War-era cannonballs in a passenger’s suitcase during a routine security screening at an Alabama airport earlier this month, law enforcement officials said.

The Transportation Security Administration said in a statement that the relics were discovered at Gulf Shores International Airport on July 18 after the agent observed what appeared to be a large, opaque item inside a suitcase during an X-ray screening, which he initially thought might be a medicine ball. When he opened the luggage, he found five small cannonballs wrapped in paper towels and notified a supervisor.

“My first thought was, ‘I couldn’t see a fuse and need to get some help quick,’” Lead TSA Officer Justin Dupree said in a statement Friday from the agency. “I couldn’t see the entire item but was scared I might have been holding a live explosive.”

This photo provided by the TSA shows a stolen Civil War-era cannonball discovered by TSA officers in a checked bag at the Gulf Shores International Airport in Gulf Shores, Ala., on July 18, 2026. TSA via AP

“I had never seen anything quite this unique,” Dupree said. “I’ve seen inert grenades and training munitions but never an Indiana Jones-esque stolen artifact-type situation.”

The cannonballs — the largest about the size of grapefruits and weighing about as much as a shot put ball — were inactive and didn’t contain any explosive material or active components, the TSA said. Still, cannonballs are artillery munitions and considered prohibited items on planes.

“I had never seen anything like this,” Supervisory TSA Officer Richard Cash said in a statement. “It was my first time dealing with a potentially live explosive, and it’s actually only the second incident we’ve had since JKA opened in May 2025.”

Police eventually determined the cannonballs were stolen from Fort Morgan, based on paint marking applied to the artifacts by fort staff, and that they dated to the American Civil War. The historic Gulf Shores fort played a significant role in several military conflicts, including the Civil War.

The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday that a juvenile stole the cannonballs from a storage area in the fort and then placed them in their grandmother’s checked bag. The grandmother told officers she did not know they were stolen.

Spokespersons for Fort Morgan didn’t respond to an email seeking comment. The sheriff’s office said the institution declined to press charges, and the artifacts were returned to the fort.

TSA has been screening more than 2 million passengers a day this summer and has encountered some unusual items in travelers’ luggage. This summer alone, TSA has found two live smoke grenades, an inert grenade, a pipe bomb look-alike and a samurai sword hidden in a guitar case.

    2026-07-30T20:33:09.075Z / https://www.reuters.com/legal/government/trump-orders-restrictions-export-critical-minerals-scrap-white-house-officials-2026-07-30/

Trump orders restrictions on export of critical minerals scrap, White House officials say

    2026-07-30T20:33:09.075Z / https://www.reuters.com/legal/government/trump-orders-restrictions-export-critical-minerals-scrap-white-house-officials-2026-07-30/

WASHINGTON, July 30 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday signed an order giving federal officials the power to block exports of old batteries and other electronic waste filled with critical minerals, part of a broader push to boost domestic recycling and counter China’s grip on materials vital to national security, according to two White House officials familiar with the matter.

The presidential determination allows the Commerce Department to issue rules that would prevent so-called “e-waste” from being sent overseas, a practice that is common.

The administration hopes to funnel those materials — especially tungsten and shredded battery parts known as black mass — to domestic recyclers, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

The U.S. exports nearly 33,000 metric tons per month of e-waste, much of it filled with lithium and other critical minerals that can be recycled, according to data from the environmental group Basel Action Network.

Those e-waste exports have long irked the U.S. recycling industry, which has said that keeping the material in the country for recycling could help Washington better meet its minerals production goals and lessen the need for new mines, which are often unpopular in some communities.

The Trump administration has fielded complaints from recyclers, the people said, that domestic firms cannot compete with global competitors who pay above-market rates for the scrap.

Several North American recyclers, for example, have faced economic challenges in the past 18 months, including Li-Cycle and Ascend Elements, both of which filed for bankruptcy.

Other projects are moving forward. In Oklahoma, Blue Whale Materials and two other firms are building battery recycling operations.

China controls the vast majority of critical minerals output, and the U.S. relies on Beijing for more than a dozen of the most vital substances,

according to the U.S. Geological Survey, opens new tab
    .

The U.S. holds substantial amounts of critical minerals in finished goods, including lithium-ion batteries and magnets, but also relies heavily on minerals imports.

RECYCLING CAN BOOST US MINERALS ACCESS

China has wielded its dominance of the minerals market as economic leverage, restricting exports of rare earths and other minerals at moments of trade tension with Washington.

Since new mines and processing facilities can take years to build, the Trump administration is essentially now turning to a faster fix: capturing minerals already inside the U.S. before they’re exported and lost to foreign buyers.

Roughly 84% of Americans would be more likely to recycle their aging electronics if they knew it would help reduce U.S. reliance on foreign mineral supplies, according to a study released this month by Ohio-based recycler Cirba Solutions.

The defense industry and other manufacturers are now just months away from a January 1, 2027, deadline under federal regulations to stop purchasing minerals from China.

The stakes are especially acute for tungsten. The U.S. has not commercially mined tungsten since 2015, and world supply remains dominated by Chinese production and exports, leaving scrap as one of the only domestic sources of the metal, which is used in munitions and other weapons.

Amermin, a privately held recycler, said in a

    March letter, opens new tab
to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick that tungsten exports pose “an unacceptable risk to American industrial and military readiness.”

The order extends a string of actions this year aimed at reducing U.S. reliance on Chinese-controlled mineral supply chains.

In January, Trump issued a proclamation following a trade investigation in which the Commerce Department found that imports of processed critical minerals and their derivative products threaten U.S. national security.

On July 20, he signed a separate executive order making it more difficult for defense contractors to secure waivers that would let them purchase critical minerals from prohibited foreign suppliers.

Mandela Barnes, who served as lieutenant governor of Wisconsin from 2019 to 2023, suspended his gubernatorial campaign Thursday, citing a lack of support to capture the Democratic Party nomination.

“It’s become very clear who our nominee is going to be,” Barnes said in a video statement.

“While I may be suspending my campaign, I’ll never give up my fight for Wisconsin.”

Barnes, who was endorsed by Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., as the “kind of bold leader we need to take on the Trump administration,” did not name the candidate he believes will capture the party’s nomination later this month.

His departure from the race comes as a surprise amid a crowded Democratic field to fill the empty seat of outgoing Democratic Gov. Tony Evers. Barnes was considered a frontrunner in the race because of his proximity to Evers and his name recognition.

It also coincides with rumblings that Barnes may have abused his position in the past to make sexual advances toward women in the workplace, an allegation currently under investigation by The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, which published its report shortly after Barnes’ video post.

Barnes’ campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether his decision to suspend the campaign was in any way connected to the reporting. However, a Barnes spokesperson told Politico “there are no allegations of misconduct or wrongdoing against Mandela.”

With Barnes’ departure, the remaining major candidates include Wisconsin state Rep. Francesca Hong, a democratic socialist, and Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley.

By comparison, Crowley has secured $250,000 and enjoys the support of a number of local organizations and figures.

Evers, pointedly, endorsed Crowley over Barnes, citing Crowley’s experience.

In his departure video, Barnes urged Democrats to unite against Republicans in the November general election.

“Now, I said from the very beginning when I launched this campaign that the No. 1 goal was taking on and defeating Tom Tiffany to deliver big wins for Democrats up and down the ticket,” Barnes said, referring to the presumptive Republican nominee.

“Now it’s our time to come together and focus our efforts on that one goal. We have to do everything to beat Tom Tiffany. This is life or death for Wisconsinites who are losing their healthcare under a Trump administration.”

Barnes built his campaign on a platform of increasing taxes on the country’s top earners, freezing energy costs, providing universal childcare and lowering the cost of housing.

‘There was no other option’: Inside Fauci’s intensely planned hearing strategy

    2026-07-30T22:09:18.553Z / CNN

Dr. Anthony Fauci arrived at a high-stakes Senate hearing on Wednesday with a single, modest goal: Survive. The former top government scientist felt he accomplished that mission, people close to Fauci told CNN.

Invoking his Fifth Amendment right to not self-incriminate more than 100 times, Fauci gave Senate Republicans a myriad of clips to share on X, but deprived them of any new opportunity to fulfill their vows to prosecute him for perjury. He refused to be drawn back into long-running battles over Covid-19 and its origins.

And instead, his allies argued, Fauci’s silence turned public scrutiny back on the lawmakers who have pursued him for years, attempting to find clear evidence that he’d mishandled the Covid crisis. In fact, some of those allies said Fauci’s unredacted Covid-era diary that Paul released days earlier — which included his unvarnished and occasionally unflattering notes on his private conversations and colleagues — may have proved more embarrassing and damaging to Fauci’s public standing than the hearing itself.

“They overplayed their hand,” said one of the people close to Fauci. “And I think the majority of the country saw it for what it was.”

The marathon hearing only seemed to intensify the six-year battle between Fauci and GOP Sen. Rand Paul, and the Kentucky senator pledged a vote next week on holding the 85-year-old scientist in contempt over his refusal to testify. But Fauci’s advisers had concluded in the lead-up to his congressional appearance that he had no other choice but to repeatedly invoke the Fifth Amendment, the people close to Fauci said, as the Trump administration has shown an eagerness to target political foes, even based on at-times flimsy evidence.

Paul and other Republicans — including US Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. — had openly suggested that the hearing’s primary goal was to generate evidence for new perjury charges that wouldn’t be covered by the preemptive pardon Fauci received from then-President Joe Biden in 2025.

Fauci’s team feared that if he opted to testify, Republicans would seize on any inconsistency with his past statements as justification for those claims, no matter how small the difference.

“There was no other option,” one of the people close to Fauci said. “Rand Paul has millions of documents that he could bring up over a 50-year career. (Fauci) has nothing in front of him.”

A spokesperson for Fauci declined to comment. Paul’s office did not respond to a request for comment.

But in a sign that Fauci’s team anticipated Republicans would seek to challenge his Fifth Amendment rights, the scientists’ opening statement underwent multiple revisions to ensure he did not address his Covid-era actions in a way that would inadvertently undermine his claim against self-incrimination, one of the people familiar said.

Fauci instead used his opening statement solely to decry the hearing itself, accusing Paul of having an “unhinged obsession” with imprisoning him. And the scientist’s team purposely did not telegraph their plans to invoke the Fifth Amendment ahead of time, that person said, forcing Republicans to plan for all scenarios.

The decision to invoke his constitutional right — and Republicans’ unusual decision to continue the hearing for hours and use it as a platform to renew attacks on Fauci — has since catapulted the former top health official back into public view for the first time in three years.

Though Fauci left the government in 2023 after becoming the highly polarizing face of the government’s early Covid-19 response, he has spent much of his retirement consulting with lawyers and close advisers in an effort to fend off Republican investigations.

In the meantime, some of those around him have also faced repercussions. Fauci’s wife, Christine Grady, was among several senior health officials with links to him who were fired or reassigned as part of cuts at the National Institutes of Health overseen by Kennedy.

Another former Fauci associate, David Morens, was charged in April with concealing federal records. Morens, a career civil servant with no criminal record, was arrested by armed federal agents outfitted in tactical gear.

That episode has further fueled concerns among some Fauci allies about the push for his prosecution, said one of the people close to Fauci. They suggested that, even short of a conviction, new charges could allow Paul and other Republicans to secure a political victory: Images of Fauci in handcuffs and under arrest.

Yet it’s unclear whether Paul’s contempt gambit will further escalate potential peril for Fauci. Should the committee vote succeed, Paul would typically need to overcome a 60-vote threshold in the full Senate before the chamber could ultimately recommend criminal charges to the Department of Justice — a longshot since it would require Democratic support.

Paul has insisted that he can instead bypass that vote and send the contempt referral directly to the Justice Department, though it remains unclear whether that maneuver would pass muster.

Even then, it would be up to the federal prosecutors to decide whether to charge Fauci with contempt. President Donald Trump has been noncommittal on the subject, despite his frequent enthusiasm for using the legal system to target political foes.

Fauci allies and some legal scholars have already argued that Fauci has the right to invoke the Fifth Amendment regardless of his pardon, since he could still face state or local prosecution for his Covid-era actions or be federally charged based on any new statements he makes.

That reasoning seemed to prompt conflicting views even among the Republicans who have sought to scrutinize Fauci. While Paul maintained that he shouldn’t be shielded by the Fifth Amendment, he also said repeatedly that any testimony could be considered a “new lie” — and admitted Fauci’s protections were a “legal question that the courts may have to decide on.”

Oklahoma GOP Sen. James Lankford, meanwhile, said at one point during the hearing that it was Fauci’s “right” not to answer any questions, even as he later questioned whether the scientist retained those rights after opting to make an opening statement.

Yet among Fauci’s allies and advisers, Republicans’ continued pursuit of charges only served to justify the initial decision to sit out a hearing aimed only at plunging him deeper into legal jeopardy by any means necessary.

The hearing “was designed solely to vilify him, and there’s no way he could have answered those questions in any way that would have been productive,” said Dr. Paul Offit, director of the Vaccine Education Center at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and a longtime acquaintance of Fauci.

“Of course, he did some things and said some things that were wrong because all of us at some point did or said some things that were wrong during this pandemic,” Offit said. “But Dr. Fauci was not the father of this virus, and he didn’t do anything nefariously. He was trying to get it right.”
