    Sightline

Here is how CNN’s Sightline real-time election insights tool works

    2026-11-01T21:53:00.518Z / CNN

As Election Day comes to a close and results start to roll in, it can be difficult to understand what the numbers you’re seeing might be saying about who will ultimately win a key race.

CNN Sightline, a new election tool designed to surface insights from CNN’s Decision Desk, can translate those results into an understandable, real-time read on what’s happening and who is favored to win.

The tool interprets election data through modeling and assessments based on the questions that CNN’s Decision Desk analysts ask ourselves as we’re assessing the state of each major race: Where did the votes come from? How do they compare to past elections and pre-election expectations? How much statistical confidence do we have in our estimates? Were they Election Day, by-mail or early in-person votes? And what do we know about what’s left to count?

Sightline brings together the results of a range of estimates meant to answer each of those questions, shows how the CNN Decision Desk interprets results to answer those questions at any given moment and produces an overall rating on whether a race leans toward either candidate.

This year, Sightline will be live for about 25 major races for Senate and governor across the country, illuminating where things stand in the contests that will decide which party will control the Senate and which will lead critical states.

Here’s a look at how it works.

Sightline’s overall estimate is derived from signals in five key areas:

    • Outstanding vote: These models and calculations assess how much of the uncounted vote a trailing candidate needs to win, and if it’s possible based on their performance so far and where those uncounted votes are. This indicator kicks in once 25% of a state’s expected vote is reported.
    • Geography: This indicator reads whether the reported votes are evenly distributed throughout the state, both geographically and by partisan lean. If those distributions are not balanced, it assesses whether rebalancing would shift the final results. This indicator will start to calculate once 10% of a state’s expected vote is reported.
    • Comparison to past: This category starts the night looking at a range of pre-election assessments of the race, including race ratings, polling and — for later poll closing states — signals of the national environment from states that have begun to report votes. It evolves through the night to lean more heavily on a direct comparison to 2024 performance for counties that have reported ameaningful share of their expected votes. This indicator begins before polls close with a rating based on pre-election estimates. Signals from the national environment kick in as we see results from across the country. State-specific vote-driven estimators within the model will begin to contribute once 10% of a state’s expected vote is reported.
    • Size of lead: Will a lead hold up? This rating takes a look at the size of a leading candidate’s advantage across several models and assesses how much confidence we have that those leads will hold, factoring in how much vote has been reported. This indicator will start to calculate once 10% of a state’s expected vote is reported.
    • Vote method: In states where vote methods — such as votes on Election Day, by mail or early-in-person — are reported for all counties, this model estimates how well represented each type of vote is, which candidate stands to benefit when any underrepresented methods catch up, and extrapolates what the results might look like when the count is complete. This indicator will start to calculate once 10% of a state’s expected vote is reported.

Each of these components includes multiple ways of looking at the data to answer our key questions, and the relative importance of those components can change throughout the night. Sightline will move in response not only to updated vote count, but as our ability to assess the vote in different ways changes.

For example, in the Vote Method indicator, early in the night, when vote reporting is most uneven, we put more weight on what we know about how well represented each method is and how voters who used that method split between Democrats and Republicans in the past. As the vote count builds and our models based on what votes by method are telling us become more precise, that part of the scale becomes a bigger driver of the forecast.

Sightline’s forecasts are not the same as a formal CNN projection of a winner in a race. The indicators underlying the overall assessment might all point in one direction, or sometimes they may send opposing signals. Either way, they provide a look at what CNN’s experts at the Decision Desk see in the data, but they can and will change as what we know about the race grows.

DOJ set to appeal ruling in Alaska Senate race dispute over ‘Decoy Dan’

The Justice Department said it would appeal the ruling two days before Tuesday’s vote in the Dan Sullivan-Mary Peltola race

DOJ asks federal judge to halt certification if Dem wins race

Fox News’ Matt Finn reports from Anchorage, Alaska with updates on the second Dan Sullivan appearing on voter ballots. The DOJ has asked a federal judge to halt the certification of Democrat Mary Peltola if she wins. Peltola has denied being involved in the alleged ‘Sullivan scheme.’

A federal judge on Sunday dismissed the Justice Department’s lawsuit seeking to delay certification of Alaska’s Senate election amid the “Decoy Dan” controversy, rejecting the Trump administration’s bid two days before the midterm elections.

The DOJ said it would appeal.

The lawsuit centered on two candidates with similar names: Republican Sen. Dan S. Sullivan and challenger Daniel J. Sullivan Jr. The DOJ lawsuit sought to delay or block certification while investigating whether voter confusion may have affected the outcome.

U.S. District Judge Sharon Gleason said the government had not shown how the requested investigation could identify voters’ intent while protecting ballot secrecy. She also said the relief sought would intrude on Alaska’s responsibility to run its elections.

The DOJ said it would appeal, arguing the judge dismissed the case on procedural grounds without addressing its claim that Sullivan Jr. entered the race to confuse voters. The case now heads to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

The dispute has roiled the campaign in recent days. The New York Times reported that people connected to Democratic nominee Mary Peltola’s campaign helped recruit Sullivan Jr. to run as a spoiler. Peltola has denied involvement, and Sullivan Jr. has denied coordinating with her campaign.

Sen. Sullivan said Sunday he would accept the results of Tuesday’s election, even as the Trump administration pursues a criminal investigation into Sullivan Jr.’s candidacy. Sullivan accused the challenger of trying to confuse voters.

Sen. Bernie Sanders says GOP rhetoric about Abdul El-Sayed “should appall every decent American”

    November 1, 2026 / 5:19 PM EST / CBS News

Washington — Sen. Bernie Sanders decried some of the rhetoric from Republicans in the Michigan Senate race, as the GOP has leaned in heavily on attacks on Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed’s ethnicity and religion.

“That level of racism, overt absolute racism, is frankly disgusting and should appall every decent American,” Sanders said on “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan.”.

Sanders, who’s supported El-Sayed’s campaign, specifically referred to comments made by Republican surrogates, including President Trump and GOP Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas. Republicans have called El-Sayed a supporter of the Muslim Brotherhood, and implied that electing him could even be deadly to Americans. El-Sayed, who would be the first Muslim senator, has denied any connection to the Muslim Brotherhood and condemned the comments. The Trump administration earlier this year designated certain chapters of the Muslim Brotherhood as terrorist groups.

Sanders said, “What Cruz and Trump and Vance and others are saying is disgusting.”

“The fact of the matter is that Abdul is running an extraordinary campaign, and I think what you’re going to see is a good victory in Michigan for him,” Sanders said. “People will rebel against that type of ugliness.”

The Vermont independent also condemned advertisements in the Michigan Senate race, saying, “I have never in my life seen such disgusting, racist, fearmongering ads as those that are taking place in Michigan right now.”

“They are calling Abdul El Sayed — who’s a medical doctor — they’re calling him a terrorist, a jihadist, really disgusting things,” Sanders said. “And the fact that any Republican would stand behind those horrible ads is a disgrace.”

Sanders also weighed in on the rift between El-Sayed and his former primary opponent, Rep. Haley Stevens, who called on El-Sayed last week to condemn an outside group’s ad linking U.S. military aid to Israel to rising grocery prices, which she characterized as antisemitic. El-Sayed accused her of “relitigating a primary that ended three months ago.” And on Saturday, he reiterated that the ad “was not made by me,” adding that he disagrees with its contents.

Sanders said, “Haley Stevens lost a very, very close primary. I can understand being upset about that.” But he stressed that during a midterm cycle of paramount importance, Michiganders will see the bigger picture.

“So the people in Michigan understand, ‘Sure, we have disagreements with Abdul on this and that issue,’” he said. “But from what I can see, all over the state, people are standing up. They’re going to stand with Abdul, take on somebody who will be nothing more than a rubber stamp for the Trump administration. That’s Mike Rogers.”

Shortly after Sanders’ appearance, Stevens publicly endorsed Rogers, saying “I don’t belong in Abdul’s campaign,” adding that she sees what is on the ballot is “who we are as Michiganders is not hate and is not what we are getting out from our Democratic nominee right now.”

El-Sayed on Sunday did not reference Stevens by name but instead said “this is a state of 10 million people who deserve a lot better from their government. I’m a lot more focused on the 9,999,998 that are not the ones who are talking about.”

On “Face the Nation,” Sanders referenced his own family’s history to illustrate his view on how some Jewish Michiganders feel about El-Sayed’s criticism of Israel.

“I am Jewish. My father’s family was wiped out by Hitler. Anti-Semitism is an extraordinarily disgusting and dangerous ideology that has killed millions and millions of lives in the last century. We cannot tolerate anti-Semitism, period,” Sanders said.

But Sanders argued that, “To be critical of a racist, extremist government in Israel, and to say that American taxpayers should not spend a nickel supporting that government is not anti-Semitism.”

“It is attacking a right-wing government, and I would say the same about any other government on earth,” Sanders said. “Does not reflect the nature of the religion of the people who are in that country. So I reject that.”

(CBS News)

Transcript: Rep. Mike Lawler on “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan,” Nov. 1, 2026

    Updated on: November 1, 2026 / 2:51 PM EST / CBS News

The following is the transcript of the interview with Rep. Mike Lawler, Republican of New York, that aired on “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan” on Nov. 1, 2026.

MARGARET BRENNAN: We go now to Republican Congressman Mike Lawler. He joins us today from New York. You are in this home stretch of campaigning in one of the most closely watched districts this cycle. Leader Jeffries has singled out your district as a top target for Democrats. Where do you see this headed?

REP. MIKE LAWLER: Well, I think we’re going to be victorious on Tuesday night, Margaret. I’ve done the work, over the last four years, between my staff and I, we’ve closed over 10,000 constituent cases, brought back over $140 million to the district, passed over two dozen bills, 17 of which have been signed into law. Ask AOC how many she’s had signed into law. The fact is, I show up, and my constituents know me. And unlike my opponent, who parachuted into this district from Virginia, I own a home here. I pay taxes. I’m raising my family here. And I think my constituents respect the fact that I’ve consistently been rated among the most bipartisan and effective members of Congress. I’m the only sitting member of Congress endorsed by a member of the opposing party. Jared Golden endorsed my re-election just a little over a month ago, and I think people know that I’ve delivered for them, especially when it comes to the issue of affordability, delivering the largest tax cut in American history, including lifting the cap on salt and leading the housing bill, which will increase supply and bring down prices.

MARGARET BRENNAN: Well, as you just mentioned, affordability is a top issue for voters, no matter what party they are in. We are seeing the economy growing. We’re still seeing consumers spend, but for the last six months, we are seeing that wages are not keeping up with inflation. Republicans campaigned on bringing prices down. Why do you deserve re-election? Why does the party deserve trust when prices have only continued to climb?

REP. LAWLER: Well, as we saw under the prior administration, inflation cumulatively rose 21%. So the baseline price of everything went up. Obviously, with the war in the Middle East, it has caused volatility in the oil markets, which- which has resulted in a- in a spike in inflation. But as you just pointed out, we saw significant growth in Q3, 3.4%. Over a million private sector jobs have been created over the past year. We are seeing purchasing power rise, but there’s still work to do. And that’s why I have focused extensively on what we can do to bring down prices. Number one, we did deliver the largest tax cut. Number two, we did pass the largest housing bill in 36 years to increase supply and bring down prices and increase access to capital. Before the end of this Congress–

MARGARET BRENNAN: The president didn’t love that bill.

REP. LAWLER: –we will finalize a permitting- before the end of Congress, this Congress, we will finalize a permitting reform bill, which will increase domestic supply of energy, which directly impacts the prices of everything from manufacturing to transportation to groceries. And one of the problems in New York, Margaret, utilities are up 58% under Kathy Hochul because they shut down nuclear power, they ban natural gas, they blocked pipelines. We are working to rectify that. That will drive down energy prices significantly, which is critical if we’re going to bring down inflation and bring down costs.

MARGARET BRENNAN: Healthcare is one of the top three issues for voters. You are one of the Republicans who tried to secure a short-term extension of those Obamacare subsidies that expired at the end of the year. In this cycle, many Democrats are promising that if they win the majority, they will restore some of those lapsed subsidies. Do you support that? Would you work with Democrats to do that?

REP. LAWLER: Oh, absolutely. Look, I’ve consistently been rated among the most bipartisan members of Congress. My best friend in Congress is a Democrat, Josh Gottheimer. We led that effort to negotiate a bipartisan extension of the ACA enhanced premium tax credit. Frankly, Margaret, it was Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer that rejected the bipartisan agreement. They wanted to go for a clean three-year extension with no reforms. The fact is, since the Affordable Care Act took effect, health insurance premiums are up 150% while insurance company profits are up over 2,000%. We need to fix the system.

    MARGARET BRENNAN: Yeah.

REP. LAWLER: I am fully committed to addressing the healthcare costs in this country. It’s the biggest driver of costs facing most Americans, and we need bipartisan solutions to actually deal with it.

MARGARET BRENNAN: The OBBB, the Big Beautiful Bill, was projected to have increased the uninsured population in your state by about 860,000 people through 2034, so that tax bill also may have hurt that case. But let me ask you about something else–

REP. LAWLER: Well, respectfully, that’s just- that’s just not an accurate- that’s just not an accurate number at all. But moreover, New York spends 80% more on Medicaid than the average of the other 49 states. Even Kathy Hochul admits they have waste, fraud, and abuse in the system with the CDPAP program that went from $10 million to $11 billion in three years.

MARGARET BRENNAN: Okay, that’s the Health Research Group KFF. Let me ask about something else. Elon Musk’s Political Action Committee has put forward hundreds of thousands of dollars to support you, and your opponent, Cait Conley, has criticized you for your ties to Elon Musk. She says you’re refusing to legislate on artificial intelligence or “superintelligence” to protect Elon Musk. How do you respond to that allegation?

REP. LAWLER: Well, first of all, Cait Conley is the AI candidate for the AI industry. She’s the one being paid hundreds of thousands of dollars by two AI companies that she won’t even tell the voters what she did to earn those contracts–

MARGARET BRENNAN: Well, what does Elon Musk expect for that?

REP. LAWLER: –secondarily, I’m leading on this issue- second, wait a minute. Well, first of all, it’s an outside group, so I’ve had no communication with anybody that’s spending in this race. Second of all, I’m the one leading on these issues with Josh Gottheimer, the Stop Rogue AI Act to set national standards with respect to these rogue agents and bots, and secondarily for the frontier models to require mandatory testing. Third, Cait Conley has violated federal election law by setting up a JFC with the House Super PAC, the House Democrat Super PAC, and she is spending out of that on campaign ads, millions of dollars. And lastly, Margaret, in the last week, a Democrat Super PAC popped up. They have not filed with the FEC in clear violation of election law, spending millions of dollars saying that I support amnesty for criminal illegal aliens. It is a straight-up lie–

MARGARET BRENNAN: Who is behind that?

REP. LAWLER: –they are trying to drive down Republican turnout. These are Democrats supporting this. They did this two years ago, and they’re doing it again. American Forge Group. This is a straight-up fraud perpetrated on the voters, like they’re doing in Alaska.

    MARGARET BRENNAN: Yeah.

REP. LAWLER: And frankly, the FBI and the Department of Justice have informed us that they are investigating it–

    MARGARET BRENNAN: Okay.

REP. LAWLER: –and it should be investigated.

    MARGARET BRENNAN: Alright.

REP. LAWLER: They are violating election law, so people should be focused–

    MARGARET BRENNAN: Yes.

REP. LAWLER: –very clearly on what is actually happening in our elections.

MARGARET BRENNAN: Yes, we did ask the Conley campaign about that, and they told CBS they had nothing to do with the mailers being sent out. But we will ask the Justice Department as well. Thank you, Congressman Lawler.

REP. LAWLER: And they didn’t condemn it either. Yep. Thank you.

MARGARET BRENNAN: We will be watching your race, sir. Back in a moment.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro says officials must “lead by example” amid dangerous campaign rhetoric

    November 1, 2026 / 11:07 AM EST / CBS News

Washington — Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said Sunday that lawmakers must “lead by example” amid what he called “dangerous” campaign rhetoric that’s escalated as Election Day approaches.

“I think what you do is try and lead by example — as we are trying to do here, as I am trying to do here — try and bring back kindness in the face of the cruelty that we see from this president,” Shapiro said on “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan.

Shapiro, who was first elected governor in 2022 and is seeking reelection this year, spoke about the threats against him and his family. He highlighted the arson attack on the governor’s residence in 2025 after he and his family celebrated the Jewish holiday of Passover with a Seder in the residence, saying, “It weighs on me, but it doesn’t control me.”

He said he has “profound differences from the person I’m running against, from the president and others.”

“But I don’t think engaging in cruelty is the answer,” Shapiro added. “I think it makes everyone less safe.”

Asked about the rhetoric on the campaign trail in places like Michigan, where a key Senate race is playing out, Shapiro said, “It’s dangerous. It’s hateful.”

Shapiro said that since the attack on the governor’s mansion, “even more people have threatened me and my wife, our family — threatened us based on how I worship.”While he said “it weighs on you, certainly, to know that there are people out there trying to do you harm,” he said, “I would also tell you, it motivates me to keep doing what I do to not let the bad guys win.”

Shapiro said he and his family met before he opted to seek reelection, and “everybody agreed — can’t let the bad guys win.”

“We’ve got to keep going forward,” he said. “You got to stand up against the hate. You got to lead by example, and you got to try and bring some decency back to this country.”

Democrat Haley Stevens endorses Michigan GOP Senate candidate Mike Rogers amid rift with Abdul El-Sayed

    November 1, 2026 / 2:45 PM EST / CBS News

Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens endorsed GOP Senate candidate Mike Rogers on Sunday amid a rift with Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed that has come front and center in the final sprint to Election Day.

“Our Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate, Abdul, said that I was no longer welcome in his campaign and that I should stay away, and he’s right,” Stevens said in a video posted on social media Sunday. “And that’s why I am endorsing Mike Rogers for the United States Senate today.”

Stevens appeared alongside Rogers at a Detroit church on Sunday.

Stevens, who narrowly lost to El-Sayed in Michigan’s Democratic primary in August, where she was heavily supported by the Senate Democrats’ campaign arm, called on El-Sayed last week to condemn an outside group’s ad linking U.S. military aid to Israel to rising grocery prices, which she characterized as antisemitic. El-Sayed accused Stevens of “relitigating a primary that ended three months ago,” although he has also clarified that the ad “was not made by me” and said he disagrees with its contents.

El-Sayed pushes to return the attention to the issues facing Michigan voters as he takes on the GOP candidate, Rogers. But Rogers praised Stevens on Friday for calling on El-Sayed to denounce the ad, and for expressing concerns raised by Michigan Jewish voters.

“Representative Haley Stevens is a courageous leader who deserves the respect of every Michigan voter,” Rogers said in a post on X. “She has conducted herself with nothing but class since the Democratic primary, a primary where a majority of voters did not vote for her party’s nominee.”

Speaking to reporters after he appeared with Stevens at the Detroit church Sunday, Rogers said he was honored to receive her support.

“This is more a statement about standing together against hate and the future of this state and this country than it is anything else,” Rogers said.

Rogers said he got the call Sunday morning from Stevens, and the two decided to appear together at the church. He said he and Stevens talked about what was better for the future of the state. And he noted that Stevens reminded him at the end of their call that she remains a Democrat.

Stevens said she’s “not trying to harm” the Democratic Party with the move, insisting that she isn’t “turning her back on Democrats.”

“It is this one vote,” she said. “And I will tell you why: Because when you see hate, when you see us standing with Hasan Piker, and repeated hate, it’s not acceptable.”

“That’s it. It’s my personal and private decision,” Stevens said. “It’s a Michigan moment, and everyone is entitled to their opinion.”

Stevens said she “meant it” when she previously endorsed El-Sayed. But she added, “He chose to close his campaign by saying I wasn’t welcome.”

The appearance with Rogers came after Stevens had been expected to appear with El-Sayed at a unity event Sunday alongside Rep. Jim Clyburn of South Carolina. But El-Sayed said Saturday, “I would rather not distract from the key issues of this campaign.”

Stevens’ fiancé, Jason Turkish, said last week that he is voting for Rogers.

After Stevens endorsed Rogers, top Democrats expressed their continued support for El-Sayed’s candidacy, like Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

“Senate Democrats are united in our support for Abdul El-Sayed, because we know he will fight for the economic interests of working families in Michigan, unlike Mike Rogers, who is a tool of Donald Trump and billionaire donors,” Schumer said in a statement.

In a post on X, Schumer called it a “despicable betrayal from Rep. Stevens.”

Democratic Rep. Debbie Dingell of Michigan said Michiganders “want leaders focused on making their lives more affordable.”

“That’s what they’re talking about, not Congresswoman Stevens’ continued efforts to get attention,” she said in a statement. ” If we are going to fight to improve the lives of working men and women in Michigan, we must stay focused on electing Democrats up and down the ballot, and that includes electing Abdul El-Sayed as Michigan’s next senator.”

President Trump praised Stevens for backing Rogers.

“Her following is huge, and the level of respect from the People of Michigan, especially our African American and Jewish populations, is virtually unparalleled,” Mr. Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Haley said what few people are willing to say. She showed great and almost unprecedented loyalty to the Great People of Michigan with what she did.”

More broadly, Republicans cited the move as they billed El-Sayed as too liberal for the state.

“Democrats who feel Abdul has abandoned them have a home with Mike, who is building a winning coalition of Democrats, Independents, and Republicans to save Michigan from El-Sayed’s radical, terrorist-sympathizing agenda,” Republican National Committee spokesman Hunter Lovell said in a statement. “The center of Michigan politics has moved, and Abdul is on the wrong side of it.”

Sen. Chris Murphy hospitalized following stroke

    Updated on: November 1, 2026 / 2:27 PM EST / CBS News

Washington — Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut was hospitalized on Saturday after experiencing a stroke, his office said.

“Yesterday afternoon, Senator Murphy started experiencing numbness in his arm while at his son’s hockey game. He was taken to a local hospital, where it was discovered he had experienced a stroke,” Murphy’s chief of staff Allison Herwitt said in a statement on Sunday.

Herwitt said Murphy was transferred to Johns Hopkins “for further monitoring and is responding well to treatment.”

“The doctors are encouraged by his progress, he is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery,” she added.

Murphy, 53, has represented Connecticut in the Senate since 2013, after serving three terms in the House. The Connecticut Democrat has been viewed as a possible 2028 White House contender, and has crisscrossed the country in recent weeks propping up Democrats in the midterm elections.
