    2026-08-19T23:29:05.357Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/08/19/politics/democratic-socialists-platform-disagreement

Democratic socialists are having a moment. They’re not all in agreement on what it means to be one

    2026-08-19T23:29:05.357Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/08/19/politics/democratic-socialists-platform-disagreement

State Rep. Angie Nixon’s win in the Florida Senate primary on Tuesday was the latest in a growing list of victories by democratic socialists who are a prominent part of the Democratic Party’s left-wing insurgency.

But within the democratic socialist movement, and the broader progressive movement, there are disagreements over what the group’s priorities should be — and some candidates have been hesitant to fully embrace the label.

Nixon hasn’t sought to highlight her membership in the Democratic Socialists of America, but when pressed ahead of the election, she told CNN’s Laura Coates that the group aligns with “my beliefs that people — hardworking, everyday people — should get to shape what their communities look like and what their economies look like.”

“We can talk about labels all day long, people’s labels,” she said. “I am concerned about the needs of people.”

DSA’s platform covers a range of issues with varying levels of acceptability within the Democratic mainstream.

Some policy priorities are widely embraced by virtually all candidates who associate themselves with democratic socialism and many members of the broader progressive movement.

Among those positions are support for government-funded Medicare for All, opposition to military aid for Israel over its actions in Gaza, and support for higher taxes — particularly on the wealthy — to pay for an expansion of government-funded social safety net programs in areas like health care, housing and child care.

In New York City, for example, Mayor Zohran Mamdani has launched a free child care pilot program, enacted rent freezes across some rent-stabilized apartments, and launched an effort to open five city-backed grocery stores intended to offer 30% discounts on staple food items.

Nixon ran on several of those issues, including universal healthcare, affordable housing, and an annual wealth tax on billionaires. Her win Tuesday over a much better-funded moderate candidate, retired Army Lt. Col. Alex Vindman, was also a reminder that one position widely embraced by democratic socialists, including Nixon — furor over Israel’s war in Gaza after Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attack — is also held by many Democratic voters, as well.

But some more controversial parts of DSA’s platform, entitled “Workers Deserve More!”, would require significant overhaul.

“The Democratic Socialists of America is building a party whose goal is a democratic society of the working class. Our enemies are not just individual bosses, but the entire global system of capital; not just this or that cop, judge, or president, but the entire anti-democratic structure of our society. We are workers fighting to transform society: to win the battle for democracy, draft a new constitution, and create a democratic socialist republic,” the platform says.

The platform includes calls to abolish the US Senate and expand the House — a view that reflects some progressives’ belief that proportional representation is more favorable than a system designed to protect the interests of less populated states — nationalize large corporations, publicly finance elections, end the two-party system, and stop immigrant detentions and deportations. It also seeks to “demilitarize police departments, disempower police unions, and redirect funding to public services as steps towards fully abolishing the police and prison system which protects the rich and jails the poor.”

Some candidates have leaned into some of the further left ideas. Darializa Avila-Chevalier, the democratic socialist who ousted Rep. Adriano Espaillat in a New York City primary in June, told Vox she believes that “all deportations are wrong” while Francesca Hong, who lost the Democratic primary in Wisconsin last week, has previously called for defunding and abolishing police departments.

But not all DSA members, or DSA-aligned progressives, are on the same page about these platform planks. Republicans, however, are eager to paint the entire Democratic Party with the same broad brush, highlighting the most controversial of those positions in television ads targeting not just democratic socialist candidates but all of those running under the Democratic banner.

“Abdul El-Sayed and the socialists have taken over Michigan’s Democratic Party,” the Republican Governors Association said in an ad last week targeting the Democratic nominee in the state’s governor’s race, Jocelyn Benson, as it linked her to groups that supported defunding police.

“This is not Gretchen Whitmer’s Democratic Party,” the ad said, referring to the popular two-term Democratic governor. “It’s far more liberal and extreme, and Jocelyn Benson is marching to their radical drumbeat.

President Donald Trump has made his own attacks as well as the midterm field solidifies.

In recent months, he’s claimed Democrats have been overtaken by “godless communists.”

“This is the most serious threat to our country since its existence, in my opinion, 250 years ago,” he said at a Faith and Freedom Coalition conference in June. “This is a major threat to our country.”

Notable democratic socialists, including New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Mamdani, have sought to distance themselves from some more controversial stances, walking back their previous support for defunding the police.

Ocasio-Cortez has more broadly suggested some of the left’s pandemic-era rhetoric went too far.

“I have a local city councilman that has this saying: ‘Woke 1 was crazy,’” the New York congresswoman said recently on ABC’s “This Week.”

“I think that we all share in the goals of having as low a crime rate as possible. I think that, you know, during lockdown, of course, rhetoric in that time is not rhetoric that we would use today,” she said.

The nation’s most prominent democratic socialist, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, has never supported defunding the police.

Another democratic socialist, Melat Kiros, who defeated long-time Rep. Diana DeGette in Colorado, told PBS she agrees with the DSA’s calls for Medicare for All, universal child care, ranked-choice voting and a 32-hour work week, but does not support abolishing the Senate, withdrawing from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, defunding the police or establishing public ownership of major corporations aside from utilities.

“We really put the ‘democracy’ into democratic socialism,” Kiros said, explaining that the DSA’s platform is voted on by its members and that it’s “almost certain that not every single member agrees with the entirety of the platform.”

Progressives who do not consider themselves democratic socialists, like Abdul El-Sayed, the former public health official who won the Democratic nomination in Michigan’s Senate race, say a key difference is that they believe in capitalism.

“I am not somebody who is a socialist. I believe in capitalism. I just believe that capitalism has to be regulated,” El-Sayed said in an interview with CNN last month.

Some candidates have also left the DSA as they seek elected office.

In Michigan’s 7th District, William Lawrence, a co-founder of the progressive Sunrise Movement, is trying to flip one of the most competitive House districts in the country as he takes on first-term Republican Rep. Tom Barrett.

He was a democratic socialist, but said he recently allowed his Democratic Socialists of America membership to lapse.

“I’ve got a lot of respect for DSA and the work that they’re doing around the country, but I felt a need to make it very clear that the platform we’re running on here is the one that has come up based on the conversations we’re having across the 7th District,” Lawrence told CNN earlier this month. “It’s just because I want to make clear to my constituents that I’m here to represent them.”

Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, are moving back to the U.K., more than six years after they moved to the U.S. and settled into a home in California.

King Charles III was informed of the decision on Sunday, and there are no plans for Prince Harry or Meghan to resume their royal duties, CBS News’ partner network BBC News reported. Harry’s brother, Prince William, and Princess Catherine were also told, according to BBC News.

The couple said in January 2020 they would be stepping away from “senior” royal roles and were working to become financially independent from the royal family.

“This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity,” they said in a statement at the time.

Prince Harry and Meghan now have two children, Archie, born in 2019, and Lilibet, born in 2021. Both are enrolled to start school in the U.K. in September, BBC News reported.

Buckingham Palace then confirmed in February 2021 that the couple were no longer working members of the royal family. The pair’s decisions to step away from their roles and move to California have created considerable tension with other members of the royal family.

Those tensions were elevated further when Harry and Meghan sat down for an interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021, during which they discussed their struggles behind the scenes with the royals.

Among other topics, Meghan recounted conversations about how their son, Archie, would not be given the title of prince and how he wouldn’t have security, and said there were discussions while she was pregnant about “how dark” Archie’s skin color would be.

Harry, meanwhile, said in that interview that he was “disappointed” with his father, King Charles III, and that he and his brother were “on different paths.”

Harry, Meghan and their children traveled to the U.K. last month and met with King Charles for the first time in years, although the move was not discussed during that visit, BBC News reported. That trip was not without controversy.

BBC News reported prior to the visit that Harry was reconsidering bringing his wife and children on the trip because his request for taxpayer-funded police protection was rejected by British authorities.

The Duke of Sussex had previously lost a court battle in 2024 over the decision to downgrade his security detail when he makes visits back to the U.K. following the announcement that he was stepping away from royal duties.

Duarte Dias and Mark Osborne contributed to this report.

US FTC considers requiring disclosure of personalized pricing

    • Surveillance pricing likely violates US law, agency says

    • California probes practice, US lawmakers have raised concerns

WASHINGTON, Aug 19 (Reuters) – The U.S. Federal Trade Commission said on Wednesday it is considering requiring businesses to disclose whether they use personalized pricing data, a practice that ‌has drawn mounting scrutiny by state and federal officials.

The FTC voted 2-0 to release a draft enforcement policy statement that would say the law barring deceptive practices likely prohibits undisclosed use of personal data to set prices.

Surveillance pricing is a strategy where companies use a consumer’s personal data — such as browsing history, location and shopping habits — to set individualized, algorithmic prices for products, as opposed to using standard, market-wide pricing.

“When consumers see a listed price, they expect it to be the same price that everyone else sees, not the retailer’s estimate of how much they are willing to pay based on their personal data,” said FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson.

The agency cited a number of potential improper surveillance pricing methods. Potential red flags would include delivery companies charging customers higher prices for milk based on data showing that multiple children live in a household or hotels charging higher prices on the basis of personal data showing consumers were traveling for a funeral.

The FTC’s proposed enforcement policy will be open for public comment for 30 days. The FTC said it was not taking a position on whether some personalized pricing practices are
    unfair even when fully ‌disclosed.

In January, California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced a broad probe into the practice of using personal data to set individualized prices. Republican and Democratic lawmakers in the U.S. Congress have also raised concerns.

Grace Gedye, senior policy analyst at Consumer Reports, praised the FTC action.

“Nobody should have to pay more for groceries or other essential goods because a company knows what they’re searching for online, what their income is, the makeup of their household, or where they go,” she said.

Lee Hepner, a senior legal counsel at the American Economic Liberties Project, called on the FTC to take further action. “Getting hit by a train is no less painful if you’re tied to the tracks and see it coming,” Hepner said.

In December, Instacart ended price tests that resulted in different shoppers being shown different prices for groceries. The company’s retreat from the practice followed a study by Consumer Reports and two other nonprofit groups that showed some shoppers saw prices up to 23% higher than others browsing the same items from the same store.

In November, lawmakers asked Delta Air Lines to answer if it set personalized prices and other pricing practices. Delta responded it does not set prices based on personal information.

National debt tops $40 trillion after doubling in less than a decade, Treasury data shows

    August 19, 2026 / 4:32 PM EDT / CBS News

The national debt topped $40 trillion, according to Treasury Department data released on Wednesday, representing a fiscal milestone that underscores the federal government’s mounting borrowing and interest costs.

The Treasury Department’s daily financial report shows that the nation’s debt reached $40.05 trillion on August 18, more than double its level in 2017. The federal debt has ballooned because government spending is outstripping revenue, forcing the U.S. to borrow more money to cover the shortfall.

“We’ve been running deficits for the last 26 years, and we’ve basically ignored a lot of the structural challenges that exist in our budget that are very well known,” Michael Peterson, CEO of the nonpartisan Peter G. Peterson Foundation, told CBS News. “It’s clearly been accelerating because, like any debt problem, the longer you ignore it, the worse it gets.”

As the government continues to borrow, interest payments are consuming a larger share of the nation’s spending, creating a compounding effect that further fuels the debt. The U.S. government now spends more on servicing its debt than on national defense or Medicare.

Analysts say the nation’s debt growth isn’t likely to slow. “We’re going the wrong way,” said Dean Baker, the co-founder of the economic think tank Center for Economic and Policy Research. He cited the increase in military spending, which he said has exacerbated the country’s fiscal burden.

The Peterson Foundation estimates that the national debt could reach $50 trillion in six years if the country does not make spending or tax reforms.

What is driving up the federal debt?

Net interest costs, which approached $1 trillion in 2025 and accounted for nearly 14% of the nation’s spending, are only part of the problem.

Several other factors have fueled the national debt, with economists holding differing opinions on the primary drivers.

The number of people collecting benefits from Social Security and Medicare has increased as the U.S. population ages, making the programs more expensive, while other spending has also increased, such as on interest payments.

At the same time, a combination of tax cuts over the last two decades has decreased the nation’s revenue. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that the Trump administration’s One Big Beautiful Bill, passed last year, will add $4.2 trillion to the national debt through fiscal year 2034.

While policy decisions have contributed, the debt problem can’t be tied to one specific administration, Peterson told CBS News.

“Many administrations and many Congresses have taken steps in the wrong direction,” he told CBS News.

Larger economic crises, including the Great Recession of 2008 and the COVID-19 pandemic, have also triggered spikes in the nation’s debt, as the Treasury Department shows.

Analysts told CBS News that the rising federal debt could hinder the country’s ability to handle future economic shocks.

“AI disruption, a recession, global war or any number of other events could quickly push us over the edge from a challenge into a full-blown crisis,” Margaret Spellings, president and CEO of the Bipartisan Policy Center, a Washington, D.C.-based think tank, said in an email.

What does the federal debt mean for you?

The public holds about 80% of the nation’s debt, according to the Peterson Foundation. Of that, more than two-thirds is held by domestic lenders such as mutual funds and the Federal Reserve System, while foreign investors hold the rest.

Taxpayers could also bear the brunt of rising federal debt because as the government issues more Treasury securities to fund government spending, it must offer higher yields to attract investors. That could contribute to higher interest rates for mortgages and other credit products.

“If the Treasury rate is going up, that means your mortgage rate is going up, your car loan is going up, your credit card rates are going up,” Peterson said.

Higher interest payments can also make it more difficult for the federal government to find the money to fund core programs, a phenomenon Peterson referred to as “crowding out.”

“It’s typically called crowding out when the interest costs represent such a big chunk of the budget that it puts downward pressure on every other program across the budget, and puts upward pressure on taxes because you know we need more money in the system to cover these interest costs,” he said.

Not everyone agrees that the nation’s soaring debt could pose an economic threat. Baker, for one, is less concerned about the consequences, noting that a strong U.S. economy should allow the federal government to continue to shoulder the growing financial burden.

The more immediate economic threats facing the U.S. are tariffs and the Iran war’s impact on prices, he said. He also warned that investors could pull their money out of the U.S. if what some believe is an artificial intelligence bubble were to burst.

“If people just become wary of U.S. markets and the U.S. economy, they might pull their money out,” he said. “So I think there is an issue with foreign money leaving the U.S. but the government debt isn’t the biggest factor, and probably not even a major factor.”

El-Sayed reveals he would go ‘step further’ than Sanders on socialist plan for major US industry

Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed said he wanted to “take it a step further” when asked whether he supported Bernie Sanders’ public ownership model for major artificial intelligence companies.

El-Sayed argued for “some system of public control,” days after a top House Democrat rejected suggestions that young socialists are talking about “seizing the means of production.”

Asked during a June 12 appearance on the left-wing “Head in the Office” podcast whether he supported public ownership models for major artificial intelligence companies like one proposed by Sanders, El-Sayed said he wanted to “actually take it a step further.”

EL-SAYED TAUNTS TRUMP, CLAIMS HE’S GOING TO MAKE HIM ‘MAIN CHARACTER OF THE MIDTERMS’

He added that while he agreed “we need public ownership,” he also believed “we need some system of public control.”

El-Sayed did not explicitly call for the government to seize or take ownership of private AI companies, instead describing possible forms of “public control” that included public representation on corporate boards or an oversight body.

U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., stands with Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed after speaking at Mumford High School May 3, 2026, in Detroit, Mich.(Sarah Rice/Getty Images)

“I want to actually take it a step further. I agree that we need public ownership, but I also agree that we need some system of public control. What is the point of democracy if it’s not to protect us from existential risk? And, right now, there is no regulation,” El-Sayed said when asked about public ownership and public control of major AI companies, with the podcast host citing proposals from Sanders.

“I just think it’s really important for us to be thinking what is democratic control over this industry? What does it look like?”

El-Sayed later offered examples of what “public control” could look like, including public representation on corporate boards or a public oversight body over companies, arguing that AI poses potentially “existential” risks requiring greater public oversight.

“Democracy is supposed to fix these problems, and, right now, they’re trying to slip democracy, and we cannot allow that,” El-Sayed continued about the political power tech companies wield in Washington. “And, so, we need leaders who both understand the technological risk and are not bought off by the AI industry itself. It is mission critical right now for our future.”

EL-SAYED AIDE LIKENS GOP OPPONENT’S CAMPAIGN TO ‘KKK CROSS BURNING’ OVER VIDEO WITH FORD PICKUP

El-Sayed’s call to “take it a step further” on public ownership comes as senior Democrats have sought to push back on the idea that the party’s rising socialist wing is seeking government control of the means of production.

Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., recently argued that young Americans who identify as socialists are not embracing socialism in its traditional Marxist sense, asking whether they mean, “I want to socialize the means of production,” before answering, “I don’t think so.”

Raskin has similarly argued that young self-described socialists are primarily seeking “greater equality and opportunity,” rather than embracing concepts such as “dialectical materialism” or the “dictatorship of the proletariat.”

But some of the movement’s most prominent figures have used more explicit language. Mamdani said during a 2021 Young Democratic Socialists of America conference that one of the movement’s firmly held beliefs was the “end goal of seizing the means of production,” while acknowledging it did not then enjoy the same level of public support as other progressive causes.

The June podcast comments are drawing fresh attention as El-Sayed, a progressive who has embraced comparisons to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, seeks to carry that brand of politics into a marquee statewide Senate race.

The resurfaced exchange also comes amid a broader debate over the Democratic Party’s embrace of democratic socialists and how far the movement’s economic agenda extends beyond policies such as universal healthcare and a higher minimum wage.

The number of US service members wounded since the start of the Iran war has passed 750, according to the Defense Department’s war casualty database.

The Pentagon updated the database on Wednesday, recording more than 50 additional wounded soldiers, as talks between Tehran and DC to end the conflict remain at an impasse.

When totals in The Defense Casualty Analysis System for “Overseas Operations” are combined with totals for Operation Epic Fury, 18 service members have died and 757 have been wounded since the US launched the war against Iran on February 28.

The Defense Department created the “Overseas Operations” category last month in DCAS for service members killed and wounded “starting July 7.” The Pentagon has yet to provide any additional details or specify the conflict in which the casualties have occurred. The July 7 date aligns with the day that President Donald Trump’s administration told Congress that a new conflict with Iran had begun in a War Powers Act notification.

CNN has reached out to the Pentagon for additional clarity on the category.

Wednesday’s updated numbers come weeks after the Pentagon drew scrutiny from media outlets and lawmakers after the killed and wounded numbers decreased in DCAS as Iranian attacks continued. Four deaths and dozens of injuries disappeared from the totals last month before being restored.

The Defense Department said in a social media post at the time that the decreases were due to “temporary data disruptions.”

CNN previously reported that the Pentagon has been slow to disclose wounded troops throughout the conflict with Iran, with officials pointing to security needs.

Trump claimed earlier Wednesday the situation with Iran is “so good” right now, as he’s paused US negotiations with Tehran and the Strait of Hormuz remains a key point of tension in the ongoing war.
