    image

Missouri high court blocks GOP-backed congressional maps ahead of midterms; Trump blasts ‘ridiculous’ ruling

    September 3, 2026 9:35pm EDT / Fox News

The ruling orders a statewide vote on the new districts that would have likely given Republicans a 7-1 advantage

Virginia Supreme Court strikes down Democrats’ redistricting plan

The Virginia Supreme Court struck down the Democrats’ redistricting plan, overturning new congressional maps and dealing a blow to their midterm election hopes. Former President Donald Trump and former Gov. Glenn Youngkin laud the ruling as a major victory.

NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles!

The Missouri Supreme Court on Thursday unanimously blocked newly enacted Republican-backed congressional districts from being used in November’s midterm elections, ruling that voters must first approve the map in a statewide referendum.

The ruling marks a rare setback for Republicans in a national redistricting battle.

The GOP had aimed to use Missouri’s new congressional map to help them win an additional seat and hold onto its slim House majority.

The court ruled that the referendum petition, filed in December after opponents submitted more than 300,000 signatures, prevented the new districts from taking effect unless approved by voters.

DEMS DERIDED TRUMP’S MIDTERM GAMBLE — UNTIL HE ENDED UP WINNING BIG

Republican Secretary of State Denny Hoskins waited until primary Election Day last month to reject the petition, arguing that the referendum process cannot be used for congressional redistricting. A lower court sided with Hoskins, but the state Supreme Court overturned his decision.

“The referendum petition was legal, sufficient, and timely, and the secretary incorrectly concluded otherwise,” the court said in its ruling. The measure with the new districts “did not go into effect and will not go into effect unless and until approved by the voters.”

Now, the congressional map adopted after the 2020 census “remains in full force and effect for the November 2026 general election,” the court said.

Once considered a swing state, Missouri has dramatically shifted to the right over the past two decades.

Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway, a Republican, plans to immediately appeal the case to the U.S. Supreme Court.

“Never before in American history has a court overturned a congressional map after a primary and before a general election. This unprecedented decision clearly violates federal law and has thrust our state into a full‑fledged constitutional crisis,”Hanaway said in a statement.

“We are confident that the federal courts will not allow every Missouri voter to be disenfranchised, which is what today’s decision does.”

President Donald Trump called Thursday’s ruling “ridiculous” and argued it was unconstitutional, saying there will not be enough time to change the map before November’s elections.

“The Missouri Supreme Court just ridiculously ruled in favor of changing the maps back to what they were a long time ago,” he wrote on Truth Social. “It’s called, Ancient History! The problem is, according to Legal Scholars, that not only was the ruling horrible, ridiculous, and unConstitutional, but there won’t be enough time to change the map back with the Election coming up in a very short period of time.

“The Election Process, as usual, is being disturbed in America! Missouri must be able to use the map that was in effect just a couple of months ago, in the Primary. This is a Dark Day for ‘Justice’ in Missouri!”

Missouri’s new districts were used in the primaries last month, but the state Supreme Court said they cannot be used again unless voters first uphold the new districts passed by the GOP-controlled legislature and signed by Republican Gov. Mike Kehoe last September.

Kehoe said he is “extremely disappointed in today’s decision by unelected judges and their lack of respect for the legislative process.”

“Holding a primary election under one congressional map and a general election under another is unprecedented and creates uncertainty for Missouri voters,” he said on X. “Today’s ruling does not change our belief in the Missouri First Map or the principles behind it, and we will continue to stand behind it as the legal process moves forward.”

Five of the seven current justices on the Missouri Supreme Court, including the chief justice, were appointed by Republican governors.

The new map targeted longtime Democratic Rep. Emanuel Cleaver’s Kansas City-area district by shifting it eastward to include rural right-leaning voters. The map was intended to make Cleaver’s district more favorable to Republicans, who hoped it would produce a 7-1 advantage in the state’s congressional delegation.

Cleaver responded to the ruling by saying, “The people fought back and won.”

“More than 305,000 Missourians demanded a say in who will represent them in the halls of Congress,” he wrote on X.”Despite the cynical and deeply shameful attempt to silence many of our neighbors, the people fought back and won. This reaffirms that the people should choose their politicians, not the other way around. Democracy prevails.”

Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin also called it a “big win for democracy and the people of Missouri.”

“Democrats will continue fighting to end the Republican gerrymandering sham and ensure all voters can make their voices heard,” he wrote on X.

    • Broader voter-drive effort could total up to $120 million this fall, New York Times has reported

NEW YORK, Sept 3 (Reuters) – SpaceX founder Elon Musk has spent more than $800,000 in recent days on over a dozen key congressional races through his super PAC, funding direct-mail and other campaign materials for Republican candidates who face close races in the ‌midterm elections.

Musk’s political action committee America PAC, which has been sitting on a $50 million war chest funded by the world’s richest man, reported its first spending for the 2026 election in a filing late on Wednesday, with a focus on races in Texas and other battleground states.

The PAC expects to play a major role in Republican voter turnout efforts, with spending on door knockers, digital advertising and direct-mail campaigns ahead of the November 3 election, Reuters reported in July. It has a funding target of up to $120 million, according to the New York Times.

A spokesperson for America PAC declined to comment on Thursday. SpaceX did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The PAC spent the most money in Texas, where Musk’s SpaceX is headquartered with multiple rocket and Starlink facilities. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has received a $247,595 boost from Musk since August 20 for his Senate race against Democrat James Talarico, who has been narrowly leading in public opinion polls since mid-April according to election tracker Nate Silver’s Silver Bulletin.

U.S. Senator Susan Collins, a Maine Republican and the chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee which controls federal spending, was the next biggest beneficiary with $170,224 going towards her campaign, the filing shows. She is in a closely watched race against Democrat Troy Jackson.

In Ohio, where Republican Senator Jon Husted faces a tough battle to keep his seat against former Senator Sherrod Brown, America PAC has printed $105,675 in materials. Like Collins, Husted sits on the Senate Appropriations Committee which controls the funding for some of Musk’s biggest government contracts at SpaceX.

The PAC’s filing showed Musk also boosted the campaign of Senator Dan Sullivan, an Alaska Republican who sits on the Senate Armed Services Committee. That committee oversees the Pentagon and many of the projects ‌that Musk’s space, satellite and artificial intelligence companies provide to the federal government.

In U.S. House races, Musk’s PAC boosted several sitting members of the Armed Services, Foreign Affairs and Homeland Security committees as well as other committees that may touch on or oversee the work of his companies. They include Republican Representatives Scott Perry and Ryan Mackenzie of Pennsylvania, Tom Kean of New Jersey, Jennifer Kiggans of Virginia, Mike Lawler of New York and Derrick Van Orden of Wisconsin.

All of the spending disclosed on Wednesday night was for “printing,” suggesting it was used for direct-mail, postcards, door hangers, canvassing literature, yard signs and the like.

The spending has drawn criticism from Democrats, including U.S. Representative Chris Pappas, who is favored in polls to win next week’s Democratic primary for the New Hampshire Senate race. If victorious, he would face former Republican Senator John Sununu, who is running for his old seat. Musk’s PAC spent more than $90,000 on materials opposing Pappas, who has been highly critical of Musk’s past work running the Department of Government Efficiency.

“MAGA Republicans like Elon Musk are trying to buy this Senate seat for John Sununu because they know he would be a rubber stamp for Donald Trump’s toxic agenda,” Rachel Petri, Pappas’ campaign manager, said in a statement to Reuters.

Sununu’s office did not return a request for comment.

A spokesman for U.S. Representative Ryan Mackenzie said the campaign has not talked with any super PACs, including Musk’s, about coordinated campaign spending. Spokesman Arnaud Armstrong said Mackenzie was a champion for government reform “leading the charge to crack down on congressional stock trading, taking on large corporations, and holding big tech accountable.”

A spokesperson for Husted declined to comment while representatives for the other Republican candidates did not immediately return requests for comment.

FBI using AI to zero in on threats faster, deputy director says

    Richard Esposito,

The FBI is turning to artificial intelligence as a tool to identify threats and fight crime, targeting transnational criminal organizations and drug cartels, Deputy Director Christopher Raia told CBS News on Thursday, three weeks after the bureau released data showing a significant drop in violent crime rates around the country.

Raia, a 23-year veteran of the FBI who was appointed deputy director in January, says AI has helped identify credible threats and reduce the time from tip to action in the field from weeks down to hours, or even minutes.

“We’ve sprinkled in AI and now these tips rise to the top and we can get them out to the field to action,” Raia said.

Violent crime rates in the U.S. have plummeted recently, with the nation’s murder rate reaching a 20-year low in 2025 and violent crime overall showing the biggest one-year drop on record, according to data released in August from the FBI’s annual crime report. Aggravated assaults fell by 7.2%, rapes declined by 7.6% and robbery dropped 18.5%, according to the FBI’s report.

Raia credits a “combination of things” behind the downturn. He praised state and local law enforcement, the border “being sealed up,” and a “renewed focus on violent crime.”

When it comes to AI, Raia said it has allowed the bureau to move with more alacrity, without being overwhelmed by more data than any analyst could sift through.

“The FBI and other agencies were sitting on a bunch of risk,” Raia said, given the hundreds or thousands of tips flowing in from around the world on any given day.

“We didn’t have the manpower to analyze it,” he said.

The bureau’s National Threat Operations Center has leveraged AI to let algorithms help identify the most imminent threats, freeing up resources to address those threats in the field.

In one example, in March, Zachary Charles Newell, of Newport, North Carolina, was sentenced to two years in federal prison for posting online threats to “shoot up a black preschool” and harm children. It might have taken days or weeks for the FBI to be on the case, but AI bumped the tip to the top of the pile and an arrest was made swiftly, Raia said.

When asked about concerns that increased use of AI could impinge on Americans’ civil liberties, Raia said the bureau has been transparent with Congress and other oversight boards to ensure citizens’ rights are being protected.

“Somebody has to police the police, right?” Raia said. He said the bureau has sent at least 50,000 pages of documents to be reviewed in the past year and a half.

“We are not taking away the privacies or the civil liberties of Americans, whether it’s AI or any of the other responsibilities that we have as an agency,” he said.

Privacy advocates have also been raising concerns about potential rights violations by Flock Safety, a company that supplies automated license plate readers to 6,000 law enforcement agencies around the country, whose data has been shared with the federal agencies.

“As far as the Flock cameras go, those are vital in our investigations as far as leads and as far as finding folks,” Raia said.

Raia also spoke about the Trump administration’s initiatives targeting drug cartels and transnational gangs. He said the creation of the Homeland Security Task Force by executive order in January 2025 has allowed for more collaboration between the FBI and other agencies, including Homeland Security Investigations, the Drug Enforcement Administration, Treasury Department and Department of Defense.

In August, 81 alleged members of a violent gang in Puerto Rico were charged with drug trafficking and firearms violations as part of the Homeland Security Task Force Initiative.

    与此同时,微软Azure(Microsoft Azure)云平台的故障报告也急剧增加。

A federal prosecutor in Minnesota who was investigating an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer for possible civil rights crimes has been fired, four sources familiar with the matter told CBS News.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Evans was investigating ICE officer Christian Castro over the shooting of a Venezuelan immigrant earlier this year. The Justice Department ultimately charged Castro this week with making false statements about the incident, but the indictment remains sealed, CBS News has previously reported.

Earlier this week, ProPublica reported that Evans told attorneys for the man who was shot, Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis, and other victims to prepare for Castro to only be charged with making false statements, which would carry lesser penalties than criminal charges that he violated people’s constitutional rights under color of law.

ProPublica quoted directly from an email it said Evans had sent to the attorneys.

“This is being directed by the Main Justice and the US Attorney,” the email from Evans reportedly said. “I objected in the strongest possible terms and fought it as hard as I could. It wasn’t enough.” (CBS News has not obtained the email reviewed by ProPublica.)

Three sources told CBS News that Evans is under investigation by the Justice Department. Two sources said the investigation focuses on allegations of leaking.

CBS News has reached out to Evans for comment.

A federal grand jury returned a six-count indictment against Castro on Wednesday, multiple sources familiar with the matter told CBS News. He was taken into custody in Texas on Thursday and will make an initial court appearance Friday, a source said.

The case revolves around a January incident involving Castro and Sosa-Celis, who officials say is in the U.S. illegally, during the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown in the Minneapolis area.

After Sosa-Celis was shot in the leg, federal prosecutors charged him and one other man — Alfredo Alejandro Aljorna — with forcibly assaulting, resisting or impeding federal officers. But the federal government’s description of the leadup to the shooting has shifted, and ICE later accused its agents of lying about the incident.

Initially, the Department of Homeland Security said Sosa-Celis fled a traffic stop on foot, and when an ICE agent tried to arrest him, two other men attacked the agent with a shovel and a broomstick. DHS said Sosa-Celis then broke free and started attacking the agent, too, leading the agent to fire a “defensive shot to defend his life.”

But an FBI affidavit filed in the criminal case against Sosa-Celis and Aljorna alleged Aljorna, not Sosa-Celis, was the one who fled a traffic stop, and said Sosa-Celis had initially struck the ICE agent with a broomstick while the agent tried to arrest Aljorna. The agent described it as a three-minute-long tussle, according to the affidavit.

Cellphone video shared by a Democratic state senator also showed a woman telling 911 her husband was chased by ICE agents before he reached his home, and was shot in front of his family. And a video later released by The New York Times showed the altercation involving Aljorna and Sosa-Celis lasted far less than three minutes.

A month after Aljorna and Sosa-Celis were charged, the Justice Department dropped the case and said “newly discovered evidence” was “materially inconsistent” with the allegations against them.

Todd Lyons, who led ICE at the time, said a review of video evidence showed two ICE officers had made “untruthful statements” in sworn testimony. He said the officers would be placed on administrative leave and could face prosecution.

Castro, the ICE agent who shot Sosa-Celis, was charged in May on state charges of assault and falsely reporting a crime, and was arrested in Texas. But Texas Gov. Greg Abbott refused to extradite him to Minnesota, prompting a legal battle that ended with a Texas jail releasing Castro last week.
