Sen. Ted Cruz calls for Trump to arm Iran’s protesters: “Our objective should be regime collapse”

    August 7, 2026 / 5:00 AM EDT / CBS News

With the U.S.-Iran conflict in its sixth month, the Trump administration is angling for a deal. But Republican Sen. Ted Cruz argues the U.S. should heap more pressure on Iran’s regime — including by arming Iranians who oppose their government.

“I think our objective should be regime collapse,” the Texas Republican told CBS News national security analyst and Free Press columnist Aaron MacLean on the “School of War” podcast.

Cruz first pushed for the U.S. to arm protesters in late January, after Iran cracked down on the country’s largest wave of demonstrations in years, killing at least 12,000 people, sources told CBS News.

A month later, the U.S. and Israel began striking Iran. The stated goal was to degrade Iran’s conventional military and nuclear program, but President Trump also urged ordinary Iranians to “take over your government” and oust the hardline clerical regime that has ruled Iran since 1979.

Since then, the U.S. and Iran have oscillated between strikes and diplomacy. The two countries struck a memorandum of understanding in June aimed at halting the conflict, restoring shipping traffic, launching negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program and eventually loosening sanctions on Iran. The agreement collapsed last month, but Iran is now inching toward a deal with Oman to allow shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, which could allow U.S.-Iran talks to resume.

Cruz has criticized many of the U.S.’s diplomatic overtures toward Iran. He told MacLean the memorandum of understanding was a “disaster” and a “terrible deal,” warning it would set the stage for Iran to get billions of dollars in sanctions relief and $300 billion in economic development funds, and could let Iran assume “a permanent role with the Strait of Hormuz.”

“You’ll forgive me if I’m not terribly eager to give them $300 billion to facilitate their carrying out their stated intent of murdering us,” Cruz said. “Giving them $300 billion is an exceptionally bad idea. It was a bad idea two months ago, it’s a bad idea today and it would be a bad idea two months from now. So I hope we don’t go down that road.”

(The Trump administration said in June the $300 billion in reconstruction funds would be voluntary, and would come from Gulf states and private investors, not the U.S. government.)

Instead, Cruz argued, the U.S. should keep striking Iranian military targets and should “continue ratcheting up the economic pressure,” including by keeping in place a blockade on Iranian ports designed to choke off Iran’s ability to sell its oil.

And he called for Iranians to be armed. “What I believe we should do, what I have urged President Trump repeatedly, what I’ve urged Israel to do repeatedly, is arm the protesters, give them the guns, to let them overthrow their own government so that it’s not American boots on the ground, it’s Iranians fighting for their own country,” the senator said.

In recent months, Mr. Trump has backed off his calls for Iran’s regime to be toppled. And Cruz acknowledged that calls for “regime change” can carry negative connotations, evoking comparisons to the chaos that resulted after the U.S. toppled Iraq’s Saddam Hussein.

Cruz said he doesn’t “particularly care who comes next” if Iran’s regime were to collapse, “as long as they are not an Islamist who hates America and is actively trying to kill Americans.”

“I don’t have a dog whether it’s the son of the Shah, whether it is the Mojahedin-e-Khalq opposition group, whether it is someone local, as long as they are not an Islamist who hates America and is actively trying to kill Americans,” Cruz said, referring to exiled crown prince Reza Pahlavi, whose father was overthrown as Iran’s shah, or king, in 1979.

Mr. Trump, for his part, said in March he wanted a role in choosing Iran’s next leader. He has expressed doubts about Pahlavi, saying earlier this year he “seems very nice,” but: “I don’t know how he’d play within his own country.”

Cruz is far from the only Republican to question the idea of striking a deal with Iran. Shortly after the U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding was announced in mid-June, Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana called it “the worst foreign policy blunder in decades,” and Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas warned that parts of it are a “step in the wrong direction.”

Mr. Trump called critics of the deal “fools” and “either jealous, bad people, or stupid.”

Meanwhile, a handful of Republicans — like Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky — have criticized the president’s entire Iran strategy , arguing the war itself was a mistake.

The disagreements about Iran could expose a broader rift within the GOP between those who tend to favor expansive uses of U.S. military force and those who are more skeptical of it.

At the center of the dispute is Vice President JD Vance, a possible successor to Mr. Trump who helped lead U.S.-Iran negotiations and has historically been a skeptic of military action. In an interview last month on Joe Rogan’s podcast, Vance broadly defended the administration’s strategy and expressed frustration with Iran “hawks.”

“I’m very frustrated by the Americans and, frankly, by people in other countries who are like, ‘You cannot negotiate with the Iranians,’” he said. “Well, then, what is your proposal to get people to stop shooting at ships in the Strait of Hormuz? You can bomb them, you can take away their radar, you can take away some of their drones and some of their missiles, but it’s just too easy to fire at ships in the strait. So you’ve got to actually be willing to talk and to try to figure out the problem.”

Cruz told MacLean he doesn’t view himself as an interventionist.

“I disagree with both the interventionist and the isolationists. I think the interventionists are too quick to send the Marines. That’s their solution for everything,” he said. “But I am most definitely not an isolationist. It is a dangerous world, and it is our military’s job to prevent enemies of America from killing Americans.”

Murkowski to oppose Todd Blanche nomination, narrowing his path to confirmation

Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska said Friday she will vote against Todd Blanche’s nomination to be attorney general, narrowing his chances at confirmation for the role.

Murkowski said the so-called anti-weaponization fund was a factor in her decision, arguing that the $1.8 billion fund — which was only rescinded as Blanche’s nomination was in limbo — could be brought back if he is confirmed.

“The country needs an Attorney General who will check the worst impulses of this administration,” Murkowski said. “I hope Mr. Blanche is able to achieve that, if confirmed, but I simply do not have confidence that will be the case.”

With Sen. Mitch McConnell absent from the Senate, Blanche cannot afford to lose any more Republican votes. The nomination now hinges on how Sen. Bill Cassidy, one of the most prominent GOP critics of President Donald Trump, will vote.

This is a breaking news story and will be updated with additional information.

Democratic group launches $15M war on DSA after socialist primary wins: ‘Mortal danger’

Third Way calls the socialist group ‘dangerous,’ ‘toxic’

    August 7, 2026 5:00am EDT / Fox News

    By Paul Steinhauser Fox News

Colorado progressive says Abdul El-Sayed win would signal anti-establishment shift in Democratic Party

Asked about El-Sayed’s race, Melat Kiros argued a victory would reflect growing voter frustration with the Democratic establishment and support for candidates focused on working families over corporate interests.

NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles!

A leading centrist Democratic group is launching a new $15 million effort between now and 2028 to discredit democratic socialism, Fox News Digital confirms.

The group, Third Way, says it plans to target the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), which they believe poses a “mortal danger” for Democrats.

The move comes in the wake of left-wing candidate Abdul El-Sayed’s victory this week over more moderate Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens in the high-profile and high-stakes Senate primary in battleground Michigan.

El-Sayed’s razor-thin win over Stevens, along with DSA-aligned and progressive candidates winning in two congressional primaries in Michigan, come amid earlier victories this spring and earlier this summer, and are emboldening the left in its ideological battle for the future of the Democratic Party.

“We believe the DSA poses a serious threat to Democrats. Their ideas are dangerous and their politics are toxic. If we are to beat MAGA Republicans, we cannot allow our party to be defined by radicals,” Third Way co-founder Matt Bennett told Fox News Digital.

The group says their effort will include opposition research into the DSA, polling, social media programs and educating Democratic activists and leaders, but that their push is not directed at individual candidates, some of whom are now the party’s nominees in a growing number of congressional races in this year’s midterm elections.

Responding, DSA co-chair Megan Romer told Fox News Digital, “$15 million to tell working class people that a better world isn’t possible? We believe in people power, and our vision for a better future is winning. We will keep building our movement, and they will waste their money.”

A growing concern among moderate Democrats is that nominating far-left candidates in key Senate and House races could endanger the party’s midterm effort to win back congressional majorities from the Republicans.

They’re also concerned that this year’s primary victories by the left-wing at the expense of establishment-backed incumbents and candidates could boost progressive contenders in the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination race, which will get underway after November’s elections.

President Trump is planning to announce over $180 million in grants to boost educational and trade programs for the mining industry Friday, CBS News has learned, part of a bid to increase critical mineral production.

Mr. Trump will unveil the plans at a roundtable at the State Department with educational leaders from universities like the Colorado School of Mines, a White House official told CBS News. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick are also slated to participate.

The Department of Energy is launching a $100 million grant program aimed at expanding the mining and critical mineral workforce by dramatically increasing the number of people with degrees in those areas over the next two years. The program is expected to financially support scholarships and other programs, an official said. Universities, community colleges, trade schools, industry groups and other partners will be eligible to apply.

The military is also offering more than $80 million in additional funding to three universities.

The Colorado School of Mines is expected to get $32.7 million for a tech development hub, the South Dakota School of Mines will get $25 million to set up workforce development programs and Johns Hopkins University will get $23.6 million for a recycling-focused program.

The grant programs come as the Trump administration pushes to increase U.S. production of critical minerals like lithium, silicon, graphite and rare-earth elements. Those materials are essential for making semiconductors, aerospace equipment and many other modern technologies, but China mines and refines an outsized share of the world’s critical minerals.

Mr. Trump has also sought to boost the coal mining industry. His administration pledged $700 million in grants to coal plants and a coal export terminal in June, and it has eased environmental regulations that restricted the coal industry.

    2026-08-07T10:00:30.789Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/08/07/politics/midterms-house-senate-democrats

The midterms are taking shape. So are the problems – for both parties

    2026-08-07T10:00:30.789Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/08/07/politics/midterms-house-senate-democrats

After a major primary day this week in Michigan and other states, the battle for the House and Senate in the 2026 midterms has largely taken shape.

    And increasingly … it’s complicated.

Elections are always messier the closer you get to November, with late developments that seem to come out of nowhere. There’s a reason the phrase “October Surprise” is a thing.

But that’s especially been the case in recent weeks. While Democrats’ uphill battle to win the Senate majority has become more fraught and uncertain, the GOP’s uphill battle to hold the House is running into its own very pronounced headaches.

So while the fundamentals have appeared pretty consistent for a while – Democrats have a clear advantage and chance to flip both chambers thanks to President Donald Trump’s historic unpopularity – the localized variables are starting to loom large.

First, let’s tackle that Senate majority math.

The biggest midterm news Tuesday – and arguably of the last few months – was left-wing candidate Abdul El-Sayed’s narrow victory in the Michigan Democratic primary.

The former public health official, whom the Democratic establishment desperately tried to help Rep. Haley Stevens defeat, is now in a position that the Bernie Sanders wing of the party has really never been in before: trying to win a crucial general election race in a battleground state.

Whether a candidate like El-Sayed can win a state like Michigan carries major implications for how big a force the Democratic Party’s left flank can be in the coming years.

But in the near term, the question is whether El-Sayed might jeopardize a race that Democrats probably need to win to have a shot at the Senate majority.

The jury is still very much out on that.

There is a school of thought that a more exciting and compelling candidate like him could turn out the base more than a candidate like Stevens. And even if El-Sayed does underperform, it’s possible the environment will simply be good enough for Democrats to pull him across the line. Recent history suggests that, absent major personal scandal, merely being extreme on issues generally costs candidate in the low-to-mid single digits.

But Republicans on Wednesday were gleefully pointing to things like El-Sayed’s ties to controversial left-wing streamer Hasan Piker and his sharp comments criticizing Israel, which could conceivably turn off significant portions of the Democratic coalition. They also suggestively cited his full name, clearly seeking to stoke anti-Muslim sentiment – which, while ugly and xenophobic, polling suggests could be effective.

What’s pretty evident: Stevens would have been the safer pair of hands in a good Democratic year.

The upshot is that the path through Michigan is probably more uncertain for Democrats now. And that sudden uncertainty has become a trend. In addition to El-Sayed’s nomination, both the Graham Platner fiasco in Maine and Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman’s flirtation with a party switch have become unwelcome variables potentially making Democrats’ difficult Senate math closer to unworkable.

Democrats need to flip four GOP seats to take the Senate majority and a tough map already means at least two of them would have to be in states where Trump won by double digits in 2024.

Having any of these variables go against them would mean they would increase that latter number to three or more.

All of that said, some of the recently introduced variables could still help Democrats by expanding the map.

Polls show them running very competitive in four of those red states – Alaska, Iowa, Ohio and Texas. They also got an intriguing nominee in deep-red Kansas on Tuesday in pastor Adam Hamilton.

And the exit of the Democratic nominee in South Dakota on Tuesday now makes it three states – along with Idaho and Nebraska – where the party’s nominee has stepped aside in favor of an independent candidates who might have better shot at beating Republicans.

The efficacy of that independent strategy remains in doubt. And these independent candidates tend to poll better than they actually perform, as I wrote in 2024. But these are states that are probably off the table otherwise – so even just making Republicans sweat a bit could be a win.

All of that said, the Democratic establishment would probably trade all of these longshot opportunities just to have Stevens as their nominee against Republican former Rep. Mike Rogers in November.

But even as the Senate has become more fraught for Democrats, the House is looking a lot messier for Republicans.

The personal scandals of Reps. Max Miller of Ohio, Chuck Edwards of North Carolina and Cory Mills of Florida increasingly threaten to not just put their marginally competitive seats in-play (Trump won all three districts by around 10 points in 2024), but also to cast a pall over the GOP’s efforts to hold the House.

Edwards bowed out of his reelection bid early Wednesday morning after a House Ethics Committee report found he made unwanted advances toward young female staffers. But GOP leaders have struggled mightily to figure out what to do about uglier allegations against Miller and Mills, both of whom have been accused of domestic abuse, among other misdeeds.

All three men have denied the most serious allegations they face.

The Miller situation is especially difficult given the ex-wife who accuses him of abuse is the daughter of GOP Sen. Bernie Moreno of Ohio, causing what was already an ugly family drama to spill even more into politics. This, and Miller’s increasingly bizarre personal response, has made it more difficult for GOP lawmakers to craft a cogent response.

While these are just a few seats, Republicans made great pains to try to help themselves lock down as many districts as possible by redistricting in a bunch of states this year. But in spite of those efforts, a bunch of other seats that would normally be safe have crept into the potentially competitive column – so much so that Democrats appear increasing favorites to win the House.

In fact, as the Cook Political Report’s Amy Walter noted this week, it’s all looking a lot like the Democratic wave of 2006.

There’s a historically unpopular president (back then, George W. Bush) and war in the Middle East (back then, Iraq), a “generic ballot” that favors Democrats by a similar and significant number (the mid-to-high single digits) and, now, a growing volume of lawmaker scandals that are testing GOP leaders’ ability to manage them (back then, Mark Foley and Don Sherwood).

Republicans would really prefer the outcome not be like 2006.
