Justice Samuel Alito, one of the Supreme Court’s staunchest conservatives, does not plan to retire before the court finishes its upcoming session, he said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal published Friday.

“Obviously I’m here for another term,” Alito told James Taranto. He said that calls for him to step down are unpleasant because they’re “a reminder of mortality.”

“It’s like, what are those vultures doing up there? They are flying around,” Alito said. “But it goes with life tenure.”

His comments put to rest, for now, long-running questions about whether the 76-year-old jurist would step down to give President Donald Trump the opportunity to appoint an ideologically similar, yet younger, replacement while the Senate is controlled by Republicans.

The court’s upcoming session begins in early October and is expected to wrap up in late June.

Alito, an appointee of former President George W. Bush who joined the court in 2006, is a consistently reliable vote for Trump and conservative causes. This term, he authored major rulings upholding several of the Trump’s administration’s immigration initiatives and was also in the majority as the conservative-majority court expanded executive power and sided against LGBTQ+ interests.

Earlier this year, CNN reported that Alito was taken to a hospital and treated for dehydration in March after becoming ill at a Federalist Society dinner in Philadelphia.

Despite siding frequently with Trump both this term and in previous years, the justice told the newspaper he remains an independent member of the court.

“I vote in every case the way I think the case should be decided,” Alito said. “If that means a high correlation with what Trump wants, fine. If it means zero correlation with what Trump wants, fine as well.”

He continued: “I think it’s wrong, it’s absolutely wrong, to say, ‘Well, you know what? I’m going to decide some cases this way and some cases the other way so that people will say, ‘Well, he’s objective, because sometimes he favors this side and other times he favors that side.’”

“I’m not going to do that,” Alito said. “I’m going to decide them all the way that I think they should be decided. I explain why I’ve done it. People can agree, people can disagree.”

He also told Taranto that while he doesn’t “watch cable news at all anymore,” he assumes some analysts look at justices as individuals who are easily interchangeable with a like-minded, albeit younger, replacement.

“So yeah, 20-somethings, 30-somethings, particularly if they’re not lawyers, I’m sure that’s how they see the court,” he said.

The Trump administration on Friday announced its eighth round of Iran-related sanctions as diplomats race to secure a deal on the Strait of Hormuz.

The new sanctions target Iran’s banking system and companies across multiple countries that the Treasury Department says launder hundreds of millions of dollars.

“Every facilitator that keeps the regime afloat is putting a target on its own back,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a statement. “Treasury will continue to expose these networks and cut them off from the U.S. financial system.”

The department designated Shahr Bank and two Dubai-based exchange houses, Titan Exchange and Alps International, that it says helped the bank retrieve oil revenue for major Iranian exporters, including the National Iranian Oil Company and Naftiran Intertrade Co.

Titan Exchange allegedly held tens of millions of dollars on Shahr Bank’s behalf, and the Treasury Department says the exchange is linked to a financier who was previously sanctioned for aiding a separate shipping and sanctions-evasion network.

Several Iranian nationals were also designated, including Shahr Bank employee Saeed Ghasempour, who reportedly coordinated currency conversions with Russia’s VTB Bank, and staff members of Iran-based Farab Soroush Afagh Qeshm who managed invoices and payments for the scheme. A cluster of shell companies in Hong Kong, Singapore and Dubai — used to funnel payments through intermediary accounts — was also designated.

Separately, the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control sanctioned former Fly Baghdad CEO Basheer Abdulkadhim Alwan al-Shabbani for allegedly helping the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force move fighters, weapons, and money to militia groups in the region. Earlier this week, however, OFAC removed Fly Baghdad from its sanctions list.

In a separate statement, State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said the measures are intended to “cut the financial lifelines that sustain Iran’s ruling elite.”

“Through these networks, Tehran accessed oil revenue and evaded sanctions designed to curb its destabilizing activities, laundering funds using front companies,” Pigott said.

The sanctions are part of the Trump administration’s effort to apply economic tools to pressure Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and eventually end the war that the administration originally said would last four to six weeks.

The war, now in its sixth month, has proven unpopular. A recent CBS News poll found 63% of Americans think the conflict is not going well, 67% say to end it now and 69% say they are not getting a clear understanding of what’s happening on a day-to-day basis.

Asked on Thursday about the state of negotiations, President Trump said, “we’re doing fine” and a deal could be announced “soon.”

U.S. intelligence agencies warn Putin could test NATO by authorizing provocative actions

American intelligence assessments indicate Russian President Vladimir Putin could be increasingly willing to authorize provocative actions that could extend onto NATO territory, U.S. officials briefed on the matter told CBS News.

Those actions could include hybrid operations, cyberattacks and other deniable measures short of a conventional military campaign, the officials said.

The assessments reflect a shift in Putin’s risk calculus compared with just a few months ago, U.S. officials say. The likely goal would not necessarily be to trigger a broader conflict, but to test NATO’s unity and the Trump administration’s willingness to respond to an attack on a NATO ally, according to the officials.

The discovery earlier this week of an explosive-laden drone at an airport in Leipzig, Germany, is assessed by the U.S. to be of Russian origin, officials said.

Officials point to a pattern of other actions that have heightened concerns, including Russian drone incursions into Romania, a Russian missile that crossed into Poland last month and a broader uptick in suspected sabotage, cyber operations and other hybrid tactics across Europe.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and other European leaders have long argued publicly that Russia is expanding its use of hybrid tactics. “We are Russia’s next target, and we are already in harm’s way,” Rutte warned last December, adding Moscow could be ready to use military force against NATO “within five years.”

The U.S. assessments come as Russia continues to absorb enormous losses on the battlefield in Ukraine.

CIA Director John Ratcliffe said at a defense forum last month that U.S. intelligence is consistent with public battlefield estimates that newly arrived Russian recruits survive just 20 to 30 minutes before being killed or wounded, largely because of Ukraine’s use of AI-powered attack drones. U.S. officials have said Russia is losing roughly 30,000 troops a month, or between 5,000 and 7,000 a week — losses that are outpacing its recruitment rate.

U.S. diplomatic efforts to end the war, meanwhile, have stalled, with no clear path to renewed negotiations.

The CIA declined to comment on the assessment of U.S. intelligence agencies, and NATO has not yet responded to a request for comment. CBS News has reached out to the Russian Embassy in Washington for comment.

The Wall Street Journal was first to report on the assessment.

Under Article 5 of the treaty that created NATO, members of the 32-country bloc are expected to come to each other’s defense, treating an attack on any member state as an attack on them all.

President Trump has expressed doubts about that arrangement at times, saying last year there are “numerous definitions of Article 5” and he isn’t sure that NATO member states would come to the defense of the United States if needed. (Article 5 was invoked for the only time in history after the U.S. was targeted by al-Qaeda on Sept. 11, 2001.)

At other points, Mr. Trump has said the U.S. would protect NATO members.

Mr. Trump has lashed out at some NATO member states, accusing some allies of not spending enough on their own defense and criticizing them for not joining the U.S. war with Iran.

His administration has also sought to shift more responsibility for defense to European states, and has weighed pulling thousands of troops from Germany, though the president called off plans to cancel a deployment of troops to Poland earlier this year.

After a panel of federal judges ordered a halt to construction on the White House ballroom, President Donald Trump said he will immediately appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.

In a Truth Social post Friday, Trump decried the 2-1 decision from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit as “horrendous, politically motivated, and unlawful.”

“The Circuit Court’s decision, which is totally wrong on the vital subject of STANDING, of which the plaintiff has none, severely jeopardizes the lives and welfare of the people who work, and will be working, at the White House — including all future Presidents of the United States, and their families, as well as the lives of all those visiting, such as Heads of State and other Dignitaries, and all Americans who wish to visit the historic, beautiful Executive Mansion,” Trump wrote in the post.

He also accused the court of refusing to acknowledge that the ballroom, which he said is being built ahead of schedule and under budget, “is a Gift from President Trump and Great Patriots of the United States of America.”

“There will be no expense to the American Taxpayer. This unjust decision must be overturned by the Supreme Court in its entirety,” Trump wrote.

The appeals court on Friday upheld a lower-court decision that paused above-ground construction of the proposed 90,000-square-foot White House ballroom project, which replaced the demolished East Wing.

The earlier ruling allowed work to continue on underground national security facilities and certain safety and security measures, a decision the higher court also upheld.

The appeals court said in its 136-page ruling that the decision to build a “massive ballroom” lies with Congress, not with the executive branch.

Judges Patricia Millett and Brad Garcia wrote the majority opinion, remarking that there is no precedent for what Trump has done.

“We are aware of no instance in American history in which a President unilaterally and using privately collected funds demolished substantial portions of the White House that Congress authorized to be built and American taxpayers paid for. Until now,” they wrote.

The judges said their ruling does not prevent the president from building the ballroom if it is authorized by Congress in the future.

WASHINGTON, Aug 7 (Reuters) – The U.S. Senate voted on Friday to confirm David Cummins, a senior vice president ​of Serco, to head the Transportation Security Administration as the Trump ‌administration pushes to privatize screeners at smaller airports.

Cummins and dozens of other nominees were confirmed on a 51-47 vote, including members of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, National Transportation Safety ​Board and Surface Transportation Board as well as Christopher Phelan to chair the White ​House Council of Economic Advisers and Cameron Hamilton to head the ⁠Federal Emergency Management Agency.

President Donald Trump proposed in April cutting more than 9,400 workers ​and just over $1.5 billion, or about 20%, from the annual budget of the ​60,000-employee TSA that handles airport security operations.

Serco offers engineering, IT, and training services to federal, state and local governments, and commercial customers.

Trump also proposed requiring smaller airports to use private security, ​a move that would cut the TSA payroll by more than 4,500 jobs ​in a first step toward privatizing the agency created after the September 11, 2001, attacks.

Airports in ‌Tampa, ⁠Des Moines, Iowa, and Charleston, South Carolina, said recently they are planning to proceed with privatizing airport security. About 20 airports, including those in San Francisco, Kansas City and Sarasota, Florida, have used private security screeners for years.

Trump fired TSA ​head David Pekoske on ​the president’s first ⁠day in office in 2025 and did not nominate a replacement for 16 months. Trump had nominated Pekoske during his ​first term and former President Joe Biden nominated him for a ​second five-year ⁠term.

A lengthy government shutdown this spring forced 50,000 TSA workers to go without pay for six weeks, resulting in major disruptions, including airport security waits extending four hours ⁠or ​more.

Airlines for America, which represents major U.S. airlines, ​has said it opposes the White House proposal to require smaller airports to use private security screeners ​instead of the TSA.

A North Korea expert told Fox News Digital the United States “can never take their eye off” Kim Jong Un and the Korean Peninsula after Pyongyang test-fired a missile this week amid the ongoing conflict with Iran.

The launch of the short-range ballistic missile, which Japan said landed in the waters off North Korea’s east coast, unfolded Thursday ahead of joint military exercises to be conducted by the U.S. and South Korea later this month.

“There’s this unsettled conflict on the Korean Peninsula. And Kim Jong Un, a very unpredictable leader that seeks attention, that is something the United States can never take their eye off,” retired Navy Rear Adm. Mark Montgomery, a senior fellow at Foundation for Defense of Democracies, told Fox News Digital Friday.

“So, we have all these challenges in the Middle East, these challenges with Russia and Ukraine, these challenges with China pressuring and trying to coerce Taiwan. “There’s no version of an empowered elite or a population or a military that could unseat him. So, we should always keep our eye on him, pay attention to him and make sure we’re constantly deterring any provocative behavior.”

“We are aware of the missile launch and are consulting closely with our allies and partners,” U.S. Indo-Pacific Command said after North Korea’s launch Thursday.

“Based on current assessments, this event does not pose an immediate threat to U.S. personnel or territory or to our allies,” it added. “The United States remains committed to the defense of the U.S. homeland and our allies in the region.”

Montgomery said Friday that “whenever North Korea does a ballistic missile launch, you have to think there’s any of three countries that could be the intended recipient of the message. It could be the United States. It could be South Korea. It can be Japan, or it could be a mix.”

He described how Japan recently test-fired a Tomahawk cruise missile in late July with the help of the U.S. Navy.

“Maybe this could be a signal back to them,” Montgomery said. “South Korea and the United States are about to start the Ulchi Freedom series of exercises … the most robust series of exercise we have there every August when conducted.

“Those are the kind of defensive systems that might be used against this weapon. Also, there’s U.S. Navy standard missiles, which also have been depleted in the Middle East. In all those cases, North Korea could be signaling to any of the three countries or a mix of the three countries that we’re still relevant, we matter and you need to pay attention to us.”
