WASHINGTON, Aug 12 (Reuters) – U.S. prosecutors announced on Wednesday a hate crime indictment by a federal grand jury against a man who police said had stabbed a Muslim person multiple times in mid-July because of the victim’s religion.

Peter Larsen, 48, of Orem, Utah, was indicted by a federal grand jury “for the federal hate crime of willfully causing bodily injury to a victim because of his actual or perceived religion” in a July stabbing at the Valley Fair Mall in Utah’s West Valley City, the Justice Department said in a statement.

Larsen, who could not be reached for comment, has been detained in state custody since his July 13 arrest.

The incident raised alarm among Muslim Americans after police said that the victim, a Muslim man, had “multiple stab wounds all over his body and was bleeding profusely” and that the attacker told police that he “intends to kill Muslims.”

The victim was stabbed multiple times, including in the neck, and needed surgeries, federal prosecutors said. They added that an investigation determined Larsen went to the mall to attack Muslims.

Larsen purchased a knife from a store inside the mall and went around asking mall employees if they were Muslim, federal prosecutors said, adding that when the victim responded that he was a Muslim, Larsen began stabbing him.

The attack was stopped when bystanders intervened and subdued Larsen until police arrived.

U.S. rights advocates have noted rising Islamophobia over the last two-plus decades following the September 11, 2001, attacks, and more recently because of anti-immigration policies, white supremacy and the fallout of Israel’s war in Gaza.

Deadly violent attacks in recent years include a 2023 stabbing of a 6-year-old Muslim child in Illinois whose killer was sentenced to 53 years in prison before he died in custody, and a 2026 shooting at a San Diego mosque that left five dead, including two teenage suspects.

‘If I go, you go, right?’: Traveling on the presidential plane—without Trump

    2026-08-12T21:03:38.035Z / Reuters

WASHINGTON, Aug 12 (Reuters) – From the beginning, something didn’t add up.

During the closing hours of the NATO Leaders’ Summit in Ankara in July, U.S. President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that he would not be flying home aboard the new presidential plane that had brought him to the Turkish capital after Qatar gifted it to the administration last year.

The Reuters Iran Briefing newsletter keeps you informed with the latest developments and analysis of the Iran war. Sign up here.

Instead, Trump said, he had sent the aircraft ahead to Mildenhall Air Force Base in England so servicemembers could tour it. He wrote, without making clear how he would ultimately get home to ‌Washington, that he would fly to Mildenhall aboard an older Air Force One.

As part of the press pool traveling with Trump, I was along for the ride.

The itinerary change was confusing, and Trump’s explanation seemed implausible. Reporters’ questions to one another turned to whether Iran had hatched a concrete plot to assassinate the president. At first, our precise itinerary also remained a mystery, though we assumed we were still heading back to Washington as initially planned after the stop in the United Kingdom.

If our initial hunch regarding a security concern proved accurate, the Qatari-provided plane – which is known to lack certain safety features – might not be up to snuff. That could explain why the White House would want to switch out the planes, and it would mean that we were in for a much more dangerous flight than usual.

Trump had inadvertently stoked speculation about potential threats during the final day of the summit on July 8. As he met with various world leaders, from Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa to Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskiy, he repeatedly brought up Iran’s longstanding attempts to kill him in comments to reporters.

After a press conference shortly before leaving Turkey in which Trump largely deflected questions about the plane swap, the sense that something was out of the ordinary only grew.

As we boarded what we believed was the aircraft carrying the president, White House staff directed journalists to close our window shades. When we pressed for an explanation, we were told it was a request from the Secret Service.

Having traveled on the presidential plane before, I knew this demand was atypical. Was it, perhaps, an attempt to obscure some sort of classified defense technology?

Only weeks later would we find out that the instruction was designed to help hide a covert operation in which Trump left the aircraft via a catering truck and boarded a different government jet due to a security concern.

On Air Force One itself, answers can be surprisingly hard to come by. For security reasons, reporters have no access to WiFi. Access to White House staff, meanwhile, is usually limited to a logistical staffer known as ‌a “wrangler,” who often lacks access to or authority to distribute sensitive information.

The flight from Ankara to Mildenhall was uneventful, though it was hard to relax. We believed, falsely, that the president could appear at any moment and the circumstances surrounding our flight remained a mystery.

While Trump did not “gaggle” with journalists for reasons that are now obvious, I thought little of his absence as he often forgoes speaking to journalists on Air Force One.

But when we landed in England in the late evening, the trip took another unusual turn.

As we walked off the plane, we saw Trump descend from another section of the aircraft, an elaborate part of the ruse in hindsight.

White House staff then asked us to follow Trump on foot as he walked to the Qatari-provided Air Force One, which was parked several hundred yards in front of the aircraft we had just exited. Secret Service agents flanked the president, and a black government SUV to our right rolled slowly forward.

The maneuver – which resembled nothing I had seen before on the White House beat – immediately struck me as notably performative and cinematic, particularly as I was unsure of its purpose.

After loading up on the new plane and taking off, a White House aide provided journalists with a printout of a Truth Social post from Trump that included a dark picture of servicemembers and their families gathered in front of the Qatari-provided plane.

In the post, Trump said the “entire” base had requested to see the plane, and that stopping in Mildenhall required “virtually no deviation” from the standard Ankara-to-Washington flight path.

Moments later, the president visited the press cabin, where we peppered him with questions about the real reasons for why he didn’t take the Qatari-provided plane to England.

It would not become clear for another month that Trump had not traveled with us to Mildenhall at all and that there was a third plane involved.

During the flight, he denied that security concerns were a factor. But when I asked him why we had to close our window shades, he acknowledged the persistent threats he faced from Iran.

“But if I go, you go. Right?” Trump told us. “Perhaps someday you want to change professions.”

WASHINGTON, Aug 12 (Reuters) – The U.S. Justice Department has secured a criminal indictment against the former chief financial ‌officer of the Southern Poverty Law Center, adding to its case against the prominent civil rights group.

Heidi Beirich is facing three federal counts, including wire fraud conspiracy, conspiracy to submit false statements to a bank, and conspiracy to commit money laundering as prosecutors expand their prosecution of the SPLC over its use of paid informants to infiltrate far-right organizations.

Prosecutors allege Beirich opened bank accounts connected to fictitious entities to disguise the source of the funds. The indictment also alleges Beirich was in a romantic relationship with one of the undercover informants and that donor money flowed into a joint account that was used to pay the couple’s personal living expenses.

Attorney General Todd Blanche, speaking to reporters at an unrelated press conference, said the allegations relate to “payments to individuals for reasons that were not accurate as described.”

Michael Proctor, a lawyer for Beirich, said the charges are “without merit” and were brought because of the Trump administration’s opposition to the SPLC. Proctor said Beirich voluntarily appeared in court on Wednesday and plans to fight ‌the allegations.

“We believe the charges against her and the SPLC are politically motivated, and Dr. Beirich has been targeted in this case because of the important work she has done to combat hate groups and extremists,” Proctor said in a statement.

The Justice Department under Trump brought fraud charges against the SPLC in April over the group’s informant program. Prosecutors allege the organization defrauded its donors by raising money under false pretenses and used fake entities to disguise the source of the payments.

The organization has pleaded not guilty and its lawyers have argued the case was brought as retribution for the SPLC’s criticism of the Trump administration and its moves to label certain conservative and right-wing organizations as hate groups.

The SPLC has long tracked political extremists and has said it shared information it learned through the informant program with the FBI and other law enforcement agencies.

Truth API launched on August 1, four days after Democratic Senators Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Adam Schiff of California called on the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to investigate whether it undermined the integrity of financial markets while enriching Wall Street, wealthy insiders and Trump.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Other White House officials are also defendants but Trump Media is not.

Trump has long used Truth Social to disclose news, such as on tariffs and Middle East conflicts, that can move prices of stocks, oil and other markets.

Wednesday’s lawsuit seeks to block the White House from posting official government announcements exclusively on Truth Social while the paid feed exists.

    PLAINTIFFS CALL SERVICE ‘PROFOUNDLY CORRUPT’

In the complaint, the plaintiffs called the Truth API service “profoundly corrupt” because the president stands to gain financially when subscribers sign up.

They also said the service violated the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment because everyone deserved equal access to Trump’s announcements, and there was no legitimate government interest in selling Trump’s posts to private subscribers and letting him profit.

According to the complaint, many of Trump’s 9,000 to 11,000 Truth Social posts and reposts during his second White House term were never followed by official White House statements.

A Trump Media spokesperson said “countless” platforms and news outlets, including many offering subscription feeds, already disseminate information from Trump, a Republican.

“Now, left-wing activists are trying to wrongfully weaponize the courts to censor him” and harm shareholders, the spokesperson said.

On an earnings call on Monday, Trump Media interim Chief Executive Kevin McGurn said Truth API enabled subscribers to get news “fractionally faster” than others.

    TRUMP IS LARGEST SHAREHOLDER

The president is Trump Media’s largest shareholder, with a 41.3% stake worth approximately $950 million through his Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust, Reuters data show.

His oldest son Donald Trump Jr. is a Trump Media director and oversees the trust.

Other accounts offered through Truth API include those of Vice President JD Vance, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., FBI Director Kash Patel and the White House itself, the complaint said.

The SEC’s three current commissioners are Republican.

After Trump’s Turkey ruse, a look at past secret presidential trips

    2026-08-12T22:40:10.671Z / Reuters

U.S. President Donald Trump boards the new, Qatari-gifted Air Force One after arriving on one of the older planes operating as Air Force One, to return to Washington after his participation in a NATO leaders summit in Turkey, at RAF Mildenhall, in Suffolk, Britain, July 8, 2026. REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst/File Photo

WASHINGTON, Aug 12 (Reuters) – Closed aircraft window shades. A ballcap pulled low to hide the president’s face. Seized cellphones. Strict warnings against leaks.

These are all hallmarks of secret, unannounced trips made by American presidents to war zones and high-risk areas, a decades-old practice that has drawn new scrutiny after President Donald Trump sneaked off the regular Air Force One jet to take a separate plane as he left Turkey on July 8.

The Reuters Iran Briefing newsletter keeps you informed with the latest developments and analysis of the Iran war. Sign up here.

The protocol has been that staff ‌and members of the press pool accompanying the president were told in advance about the trips and sworn to secrecy. They could opt out if they wished.

A source briefed on the Trump trip said that was not done on this occasion because of the unprecedented nature of the imminent threat facing the president.

Only a small group of officials was aware of the elaborate operation to transfer Trump from the presidential jet to a smaller government plane using a catering truck. Most of those left aboard, including cabinet officials and traveling press, were unaware that the plane they were on was a decoy under threat of a missile attack.

Here is a look at some of the secret trips that presidents have made in the past.

    BAGHDAD FOR THANKSGIVING 2003

Free-range turkey, corn-bread dressing, Prairie Chapel pecan pie — these were all items on the menu published by the White House for President George W. Bush for his Thanksgiving dinner in November 2003 at his Crawford, Texas, ranch.

But Bush was not there to enjoy the meal. Wearing a ballcap pulled low, he secretly flew aboard Air Force One to Joint Base Andrews near Washington, leaving behind a large press contingent dedicated to covering his every move. The cover story for moving the plane was that it needed maintenance.

The plane taxied into the Air Force One hangar at Andrews, and Bush bounded aboard another plane that took off for Baghdad with lights turned off and window shades shut. Plane personnel took reporters’ electronic devices temporarily to prevent leaks.

On board were several staffers and members of a 13-person press pool who had been told about the trip a few days earlier and warned that if word of it leaked the plane would be turned around in midflight.

    The trip did not leak.

Bush ‌spent time with troops at a U.S. base in Baghdad. Reporters were finally allowed to report the news once Air Force One was on the way home and out of harm’s way.

BILL CLINTON SWITCHED PLANES FROM INDIA TO PAKISTAN

In 2000, President Bill Clinton was on a trip to India and Pakistan and was scheduled to fly Air Force One from Mumbai to Islamabad to meet with General Pervez Musharraf, who had taken power in a coup in Pakistan the year before. Security concerns about the trip arose amid tensions in U.S.-Pakistan relations.

A pool report from that day said Clinton stepped around the nose of a giant C-17 and proceeded to a pair of small military jets parked on the other side. The first was an unmarked white jet; the one behind had Air Force One’s usual USA markings. Clinton was seen boarding the white jet, which he took to Islamabad.

    OBAMA’S SURPRISE TRIP TO AFGHANISTAN

Many of the presidential trips were taken simply to thank troops in war zones.

On Memorial Day in 2014, President Barack Obama made a surprise trip to Bagram air base in Afghanistan, his fourth such trip there. The trip had been in the planning for several weeks and was kept secret for security reasons until his arrival. The White House put together a small press pool for the trip just a couple of days before Obama departed.

The president, wearing an Air Force One bomber jacket, seemed to relish the surprise, telling 3,000 troops he had been in the neighborhood and “thought I’d drop by.”

    TRUMP GOES TO IRAQ

At Christmas time in 2018, Trump and his wife, Melania, made a surprise visit to U.S. troops in Iraq. It was his first trip to a conflict zone nearly two years into his first term and days after announcing a pullout of American troops from neighboring Syria.

    2026-08-12T21:17:17.737Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/08/12/politics/david-crowley-wisconsin-governor-upset

Inside the Wisconsin upset that shook the progressive left for a change

    2026-08-12T21:17:17.737Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/08/12/politics/david-crowley-wisconsin-governor-upset

One month after he suspended his campaign, David Crowley’s victory in Wisconsin’s Democratic primary for governor on Tuesday marked an astonishing turn around.

When the Milwaukee County executive re-entered the race 10 days after he exited it, democratic socialist state lawmaker Francesca Hong’s momentum seemed near insurmountable.

But on Wednesday morning, it was Crowley, not Hong, who was urging his party’s voters to set aside their ideological differences and unite against “something much bigger” in this fall’s race against Republican Rep. Tom Tiffany.

The stunning win opens a critical new chapter in the ongoing battle between the center-left Democratic establishment and its progressive insurgency — one that revealed voters’ hesitancy around the electability of further-left candidates in a presidential battleground.

Tony Evers, the popular outgoing Democratic governor, recruited Crowley back into the race last month and campaigned at his side as they traveled together across Wisconsin in the closing stretch of the race, mincing few words as he implored voters to weigh their choices carefully.

“In my heart of hearts, I know David Crowley is the best chance we have of beating Tom Tiffany,” Evers said at one of his final rallies. “A lot of people have asked: Why David? David is the kind of guy who gets shit done.”

The 40-year-old has a long record in local politics. A former member of the state Assembly, Crowley was elected Milwaukee County executive in 2020 and won a second term four years later. It’s the same path that GOP former Gov. Scott Walker followed: serving in the legislature, then as Milwaukee County’s executive for eight years — where he was the first Republican to hold the role — prior to being elected governor in 2010.

Crowley also has the chance to make history. If elected in November, he would be the state’s first Black governor.

“I’m a son of Milwaukee,” he said Wednesday, seeking to introduce himself anew. “I’m a community organizer by heart who has just happened to find himself in the halls of the state capitol building and at the head of Milwaukee County government for the last six years.”

Crowley described his climb from the “very dark days” of his childhood, which included eviction, mental health struggles, addiction and housing uncertainty, to dropping out of college at 19 to pursue an electrical apprenticeship, and ultimately graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2024 while serving as county executive.

“I know what it means to face hardship because I’ve lived it. I know what it’s like to rely on public schools, to depend on opportunity, and to believe that if that if people invest in you, your future can improve and it absolutely can change,” he said.

Democratic socialists this year have won the mayoral primary in Washington, DC, ousted House incumbents in New York City and Denver and defeated moderate contenders in congressional contests in Philadelphia and Detroit.

Just last week, progressive former public health official Abdul El-Sayed bested the establishment pick, moderate Rep. Haley Stevens, in Michigan’s Senate primary, despite many Democrats’ worries that El-Sayed’s positions — including his strident criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza, his support for abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement and his advocacy for Medicare for All — might alienate the moderates, independents and disaffected Republicans whose votes he will need to win November’s general election.

Wisconsin lacked many of the hallmarks of those races.

Key progressive figures like Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren and New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez stayed out of the primary — a reality that made the race less of a litmus test on the party’s broader direction.

The primary field was jumbled several times in July. First, Crowley dropped out. Then a top center-left choice, Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez, ended her own campaign amid a campaign finance scandal. At Evers’ urging, Crowley jumped back into the race. Finally, Evers’ first-term lieutenant governor, Mandela Barnes, exited. Just weeks from Election Day, Crowley was improbably the last moderate contender left standing.

But in the days leading up to the election, the former chef and restaurant owner set off alarm bells herself with a series of television interviews that raised questions about whether she was prepared to handle the intense scrutiny of a general election in a battleground state.

In an interview with CNN, she gave a meandering answer when asked about a 2020 tweet in which she advocated for canceling Thanksgiving. The moment went viral, and many Democratic voters said in interviews that it gave them pause about Hong’s viability in November.

Another complicating factor: Many Wisconsin voters cast their ballots early and while the primary field was still in flux. This year, they were not given the opportunity to scrap the ballots they’d already submitted and ask for new ones.

Twenty percent of the electorate — more than 165,000 voters as of Wednesday afternoon, with the final ballots still being counted — had voted for candidates other than Crowley and Hong. Another progressive, state Sen. Kelda Roys, had claimed nearly 60,000 votes — including more than 16,000 in Dane County, which covers Hong’s hometown of Madison.

With Crowley and Hong separated by less than 4,000 votes, any of those factors could be the difference in the race’s outcome.

“We may not agree on every policy. We may not use the same labels. But we all want safe communities, strong schools, affordable health care, good-paying jobs, and a brighter future for all of our children. And every one of us has something much bigger to unite around, and that is keeping MAGA extremism from bringing the chaos we see in Washington into our neighborhoods right here in the state of Wisconsin,” Crowley said in a victory speech Wednesday morning in Milwaukee.

The consolidation of establishment support around Crowley also played a key role in reviving his campaign.

Evers and Crowley hit the road together on a final sprint to Election Day, as Wisconsin Democrats looked to salvage a rare opening this fall.

Democrats have been on the rise in Wisconsin, winning two key Supreme Court seats in recent years, with a statehouse majority finally within grasp after years of Republican rule.

“Wisconsinites, we have worked too damn hard and we have waited too damn long to have this all squandered now. Everything we built and everything we worked for is on the line,” Evers said at a campaign stop Sunday.

It was a message aimed squarely at undecided voters like Kelly Walters of Madison, who was frustrated by the chaotic primary and unsure of who to support.

“I really like Gov. Evers and I appreciate his support in a race where there’s a lot of candidates,” Walters said as she left her polling place at the Covenant Presbyterian Church. “Not knowing at the end who to support, that definitely helped me in my decision.”

Karen Neff, who came to see Crowley at one of his final campaign stops, was visibly frustrated with all of the wild twists and turns in the Democratic primary, with candidates dropping out of the race and failing to coalesce around one alternative sooner.

“I’m really disappointed that we find ourselves in this mess between Hong and Crowley,” said Neff, who said she liked Hong, but worried about her electability. “She has been fairly abrasive in her stance as a democratic socialist. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being a democratic socialist, but she’s come out so strong that I think she’s going to scare people.”

Evers, 74, is hardly the flashiest of the nation’s governors. But several Democratic advisers in Wisconsin said he has an unusually deep reservoir of trust with voters and his late endorsement in the race was critical.

“Without the governor’s helping hand, Crowley couldn’t have won,” a longtime party adviser told CNN. “His timing and his backing were critical.”

At each stop in the closing days of the race, Evers literally embraced Crowley on stage, sending an unmistakable signal of his support and seal of approval. But while Crowley had the backing of much of the party establishment, he bristled at the notion that he was an entrenched part of it.

“I may be established,” Crowley told CNN, “but I’m not the establishment.”

Now, Crowley must unite the divided factions of the party, a majority of which voted for his opponents, and expand his base as he looks ahead to the general election against Tiffany.

He started on Wednesday with a speech at a community center in Milwaukee where he praised Hong for running a campaign that he said “reminded people across Wisconsin that there are no longshots when it comes to believing in a better future and fighting to expand opportunities to every family.”

“That kind of passion strengthens our democracy, and I look forward to earning their support and everyone who participated in this campaign as we move forward together,” he said.

Crowley also previewed his lines of attack against Tiffany, blasting the GOP congressman for siding with President Donald Trump’s claims of widespread fraud in the 2020 presidential election and for voting to slash funding for programs like food stamps.

In the coming days, he vowed to turn his focus to “coalescing Democrats, independents, Republicans, and those who are afraid of having a MAGA extremists occupying our governorship.”

Hong also looked to quickly mend the party’s rifts, calling Crowley to concede early Wednesday morning and agreeing to appear at a unity event.

She said in a speech on Tuesday night that no matter who wins the primary, Democrats are going to “continue to fight for each other.”

“Because everyone who’s running in this race, they know that we can make better possible — and we must make better possible,” she told supporters in Madison.

Whole Foods recalls some jalapeño products over salmonella risk

    August 12, 2026 / 7:01 PM EDT / CBS News

Whole Foods has joined other big brands in recalling jalapeño products after a pepper supplier in Mexico was identified as a potential source of a salmonella outbreak affecting at least 27 U.S. states.

Certain salsas, guacamole, pico de gallo, and prepared food products at Whole Foods with the “Best Before” or “Best By” dates between Aug. 7 and Aug. 12 and Aug. 9 and Aug. 14 were included in the list of affected products on Wednesday, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

The recalled products are from Whole Foods’ Produce and Prepared Foods departments and they included jalapeños sourced from Coast Citrus Distributors, the FDA said. They were sold in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, Kentucky and Ohio.

A full list of recalled products can be found on the FDA’s website. No illnesses have been reported in connection with these products.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention began identifying clusters of salmonella cases last month and linked them to jalapeño peppers grown in Sinaloa, Mexico.

The FDA said Coast Citrus Distributors agreed to recall the affected peppers, and Chipotle, Qdoba, and Taylor Farms — the distributor under investigation over a recent cyclospora outbreak — followed suit. Stores that received Taylor Farms’ Taylor Fresh Foods recalled products include Hannaford, Kroger, Stop and Shop, Target, Trader Joe’s, Walmart and Whole Foods.

“Given their actions to remove product from their stores, FDA does not consider there to be a current ongoing risk from these establishments to consumers in this outbreak,” the FDA said.

Salmonella can cause diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps within 8 to 72 hours after exposure, according to the Mayo Clinic, which said most healthy people recover within days to a week without treatment.

“Nothing matters more to us than our customers’ safety,” a Whole Foods spokesperson told CBS News on Monday after the Amazon-owned store said it pulled Taylor Farms’ products from its shelves. “Customers who purchased any of these products from us should throw them away and contact us for a refund.”
