The Cook Political Report just shifted its Texas and Iowa Senate ratings to toss ups. Here’s why.

    Inside Politics

The Cook Political Report’s Jessica Taylor joins “Inside Politics” with brand new Senate race ratings, shifting their forecasts for both Iowa and Texas to toss up. “We see the Senate now as a toss up, one that still might slightly favor Republicans. But it is an increasingly competitive opportunity for Democrats,” she tells Dana Bash.

FIRST ON FOX: ActBlue co-founder Matt DeBergalis pleaded the Fifth Amendment during his closed-door deposition before three key House committees, sources familiar with the matter told Fox News Digital.

The Committee on House Administration, House Oversight Committee, and House Judiciary Committee are conducting a joint investigation into ActBlue, a massive fundraising platform for Democrats, over allegations that lax fraud prevention standards may have allowed foreign donations to seep into U.S. campaigns.

DeBergalis’ deposition, which was scheduled for Thursday morning, lasted less than half an hour. Fox News saw DeBergalis entering and exiting the committee room within roughly 25 minutes.

Fox News Digital reached out to ActBlue for comment. Fox News Digital also reached out to the majority and minority of each of the three committees.

ActBlue is prolific across Democratic campaigns, being used by the likes of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Michigan Senate hopeful Abdul El-Sayed, among others.

Pleading the Fifth Amendment is not evidence of wrongdoing. ActBlue has repeatedly denied running afoul of the law during the course of Republicans’ probe.

The Committee on House Administration, which has jurisdiction over U.S. election laws, first opened a probe into ActBlue in 2023. Chairman Bryan Steil, R-Wis., accused the group of potentially accepting foreign or fraudulent donations for not requiring a credit card CVV number for contributions.

ActBlue has since updated its donation requirements with a CVV mandate.

A report released by the committees in April 2025 claimed that “ActBlue executives and staff are aware that both foreign and domestic fraudulent actors are exploiting the platform but do not take the threat seriously.”

The platform’s current CEO invoked the Fifth Amendment during a public congressional hearing earlier this year.

Steil told Fox News in an interview ahead of the deposition on Wednesday that it was unclear if ActBlue has updated its standards.

“It’s unclear how serious ActBlue is now taking fraud. We know that they weakened their fraud standards previously. Did they make the changes that are needed to root out foreign funds from coming into U.S. Elections?” Steil asked.

He also pointed to other ActBlue executives’ silence in the face of Republican questioning.

“What is so frustrating for me, and I think countless others — they have a right to not answer our questions, but I think the American people also have a rights to know exactly what’s taking place on this platform that has raised roughly $20 billion for Democratic candidates and liberal causes since its creation,” Steil said.

    Inside Politics

The Campos-Duffy family is the star in a new reality show centered around a 7-state road trip, in honor of America’s 250th. The show’s sponsors include American Airlines, Boeing, Royal Caribbean, Enterprise, Toyota and Shell—all corporations that could see regulation by the Sean Duffy-run Transportation Department. One clue to the target audience: Duffy’s views on a key conservative culture war issue, universities the Trump administration sees as too liberal. Duffy says, “you’ll see young people go to a conservative school with a conservative family, and they get perverted and contorted,” by schools like Harvard.

U.S. Army moves to end drone battalion set up to absorb lessons from Ukraine war

    August 20, 2026 / 1:56 PM EDT / CBS News

The U.S. Army is planning to phase out a drone battalion tasked just last year with studying and taking on board lessons on drone warfare, including from the ongoing Ukraine war, an Army official confirmed to CBS News on Thursday.

Multiple current and former U.S. officials told CBS News the decision to nix the unit came amid tension between the senior officers who championed the battalion and Gen. Christopher LaNeve, the acting chief of staff of the Army.

The unit was pushed by former Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George and the former commander of U.S. Army Europe and Africa, Gen. Christopher Donahue. Both were fired or forced to retire early, paving the way for LaNeve’s rise to acting Army chief of staff.

The unit, known as the Unmanned Assault Battalion, was schooled in drone warfare and set to be used as a special group that could deploy anywhere drones were required.

The war in Ukraine has highlighted the key role drones now play in warfare for several years. Early in the war launched jointly by the U.S. and Israel against Iran, that message was driven home further as Iran launched one-way attack drones at U.S. military installations across the Middle East.

The Unmanned Assault Battalion is participating in an exercise set to run through September, where it will deliver what its members have learned over the past year to inform the Army’s future warfare.

An Army official told CBS News that, after the exercise, the unit will “refocus on its core warfighting tasks as an airborne infantry battalion,” which means the soldiers are trained to parachute and drop out of aircraft. The battalion is part of the 173rd Airborne Brigade.

The Wall Street Journal first reported that the drone unit would be phased out.

Last year, George, the former Army chief of staff, and Army Secretary Dan Driscoll rolled out what they called the Army Transformation Initiative, which emphasized unmanned systems.

“I don’t think I’ve talked to a single person who has said we shouldn’t be learning from what’s occurring in Ukraine,” Driscoll told Margaret Brennan on “Face the Nation” last year.

A spokesperson for the Army secretary said Driscoll did not have a comment on the drone unit.

Strategic moves based on personal disagreements?

Multiple current and former officials told CBS News there has been long-simmering tension between LaNeve and the former senior officers who pushed for the unit to be established.

The officials said there was prior tension between LaNeve and Donahue after LaNeve’s tenure as the commander of the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division ended earlier than what is typical for that position. After he was “soft relieved,” the officials said, LaNeve was quickly pushed out of his house at Fort Bragg in North Carolina so the new commander could move in. Officials said that episode contributed to ill will between LaNeve and Donahue.

A spokesperson for LaNeve referred questions to the Army, which declined to comment beyond the statement confirming plans to shut down the drone unit.

LaNeve published his vision for the Army this week in a document titled “The Army Azimuth.” The document said soldiers will focus on the fundamentals of soldiering while incorporating new capabilities, including defending against unmanned systems or drones.

“Every Soldier deserves to know where this Army is headed and what’s expected of them. That’s what an azimuth is — clear direction. My focus is simple and it hasn’t changed: this Army must fight and win today,” LaNeve said in a statement.

“There needs to be more drones”

David Petraeus, a retired Army general and former director of the CIA, told CBS News in April that the U.S. needs to act now to incorporate drones for future warfare.

“In some Western countries right now, they think that innovativeness is giving 50 drones to an armored battalion,” Petraeus said. “No. What we should do is scrap the armored battalions and replace them with a drone battalion.”

U.S. Army Capt. Ronan Sefton was first deployed to Germany with the Army’s 2nd Cavalry Regiment not long after Russia launched its invasion in 2022. In March, he told CBS’ “60 Minutes” that Americans had been learning from the Ukrainians’ battlefield experience.

“The first really poignant lesson for us was, there needs to be more drones,” Sefton told correspondent Holly Williams. “They need to be everywhere involved in the training to add to the realism.”

Sefton said he told every senior U.S. commander he could find that “this is important, it’s changing warfare and here’s how we can actually implement it now.”

He went on to join the Army’s Ukraine Lessons Learned Task Force, a separate unit from the one which is being phased out, but which was also given the job of translating experience from Ukraine’s fighting force to America’s military. New technology will not make the U.S. military’s traditional firepower obsolete, Sefton said, but it will need to adapt, urgently, to counter the drones developed by America’s adversaries.

‘Please stay strong’: Brother sends message to American deemed wrongfully detained in China

    Aug 20, 2026, 3:01 PM ET / CNN

    Updated Aug 20, 2026, 3:09 PM ET

The brother of an American scholar detained in China welcomed the news Thursday that he was declared wrongfully detained, saying he hopes that it will help lead to his release.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio made the wrongful detention determination after an “extensive review of the circumstances” around Min Zin’s detention, Assistant Secretary of State Dylan Johnson announced Thursday. Min Zin has been jailed since early June.

The designation comes ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s expected meeting with President Donald Trump in the United States next month.

“When I heard the news, I teared up a little bit,” Aung Maw Zin told CNN Thursday, saying it gives the message to Beijing that his older brother’s case is a priority.

Min Zin went to Yunnan earlier this summer, at the invitation of a professor he has known since 2018, to attend a conference at Kunming University, his brother said. He had traveled to China in the past without incident, including for a conference in 2025.

However, this time, Min Zin was detained immediately upon arrival in the country. The Chinese government said he is “suspected of spying and endangering Chinese national security.”

Min Zin is an expert on his native Myanmar, where he had been a student activist in the pro-democracy movement in his youth. He was forced into hiding for seven years there before eventually immigrating to the US. He enrolled in a PhD program at UC Berkeley, met his wife, and became a US citizen. The two have a teenage daughter.

Min Zin (right), an American classified as wrongfully detained in China, is seen in this undated handout photograph.

“2012 was an incredibly important year in Min Zin’s life. He became both a naturalized US citizen and a father. That moment carried deep meaning for him. America had given him asylum when there was no safe space for him in his home country, Burma,” Aung Maw told CNN, using another name for Myanmar.

Min Zin returned to Myanmar in 2016 and set up a think tank – the Institute for Strategy and Policy-Myanmar. Following the coup in 2021, he and his family moved to Thailand, where they have been living since.

Aung Maw Zin said his brother’s research has been “solely” on Myanmar, not China.

“He’s not anti-China. He wants China to help resolve the crisis in Burma,” he told CNN.

US diplomatic personnel have been able to see Min Zin since his detention more than two months ago, but his brother, wife and daughter have not been able to speak with him. He has been held in solitary confinement, Aung Maw Zin said.

Min Zin is now one of two Americans designated as wrongfully detained in China, along with Youlin Chen, a seismologist who has been detained since early November 2024.

“The safety and security of U.S. citizens is the State Department’s top priority,” Johnson said in a statement. “We will continue to advocate for Mr. Zin and call for the release of all US citizens who are arbitrarily detained or exit banned in China.”

CNN has reached out to the Chinese Embassy in Washington, DC, for comment on Min Zin’s designation.

Aung Maw Zin said the family is “deeply grateful to President Trump and Secretary Rubio for moving swiftly to designate Min Zin as wrongfully detained.”

“We know how seriously the President takes bringing Americans home, and I am confident in his ability to help secure my brother’s release,” he said.

He also said the designation helps Min Zin’s daughter know that her father is not a criminal.

Asked what he would tell his brother, Aung Maw Zin said he would urge Min Zin to lean into his meditation, a lifelong practice.

“Please stay strong,” he added. “We are doing everything we can to bring you back home with the family.”
