Charter plane carrying 8 crashes in western Alaska, federal officials say

A charter plane carrying eight people crashed Thursday near a remote radar site in western Alaska, federal authorities said.

Clint Johnson, the National Transportation Safety Board’s Alaska region chief, said two pilots and six passengers were on board. He did not immediately have details on their status.

The Federal Aviation Administration said in a separate statement that the Cessna 441 departed Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport and was headed to Cape Newenham when it crashed west of Cape Newenham LRRS Airport at 12:15 p.m. local time. The FAA also reported that there were eight people aboard.

The Alaska Rescue Coordination Center said it launched a search and rescue mission after receiving a report of an “aircraft incident” near the Cape Newenham Long Range Radar Site. It said additional information would be released as it became available and did not respond to questions.

The FAA said the NTSB would lead the investigation into the crash, with the FAA assisting.

Storms soak Northeast as possible tornadoes reported in New York, Delaware

Heavy rain and winds pounded the Northeast U.S. on Thursday as storms tore through a beach on Long Island, flooded a major New York freeway and knocked out power in parts of Delaware’s capital city.

Photos and video shared on social media show debris thrown in the air and pummeling rain as a possible tornado touched down at Atlantic Beach on Long Island’s outer barrier. It tore apart a major beach club, leaving broken beach chairs and wood beams littered across the shoreline.

The Inwood Fire Department said dozens of cabanas were damaged or destroyed at the Sun and Surf Beach Club in Atlantic Beach. Inwood Fire Chief Josiyah Green said no one was trapped in any of the cabanas or had to be rescued at the club.

“Best I can call it is luck,” Green said. “Just by the grace of luck that a lot of people weren’t hurt here because this beach club is a very popular place during the summer.”

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman declared a state of emergency.

“There are reports of people trapped in their vehicles due to flooding in the south shore, and first responders are assisting in their rescue,” Blakeman said in a statement.

The National Weather Service had warned of waterspouts, tornado-like hazards that happen over water, in the area but wasn’t able to immediately confirm a tornado on the beach.

Bryan Ramsey, a meteorologist for the weather service in New York, said the storm was moving East offshore Thursday evening and was expected to taper over the next several hours.

In other parts of New York, flooding caused part of the Long Island Expressway in Queens to close in both directions, according to New York City Emergency Management. Photos on social media show lines of stopped cars as emergency crew wade through the water.

A tornado touched down in Dover, Delaware, and caused significant damage across the city, the police department reported. Officials said no injuries had been reported in the city. The weather service confirmed that the tornado touched down in Dover shortly after 6 p.m. local time.

Sections of the roofs at the Days Inn and Super Lodge in Dover collapsed or were torn away, while doors, walls and other parts of the buildings were damaged, according to CBS News Philadelphia.

Dover Police Lt. Mark Hoffman said the damage in the city appeared consistent with a tornado.

“It would certainly appear that way based on the path of travel and the amount of damage that we’ve had,” Hoffman said.

Photos and video online show fallen trees, downed power lines and flooded roads.

Kuimonie Goins of Greensboro, North Carolina, said she was staying at the Days Inn in Dover with her family when the storm intensified.

“When it started raining, we started seeing like pieces of buildings flying, and then we started to see the tornado form, and then we ran in the bathroom because we were scared,” Goins told CBS Philadelphia.

The Delaware Electric Cooperative said more than 1,000 people didn’t have power in the northern part of its service area.

There were flash flood warnings in parts of eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey, the weather service said.

Democratic strategist James Carville joined a news conference to discuss the ‘Promise to America,’ a pledge aimed at Democrats who want ‘capitalism, not socialism’ among other tenets.

Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville did not mince words when he unloaded on his party’s far-left insurgency Thursday.

“We get subjugated by some of the more outspoken people who, by the way, [are] not even Democrats,” Carville said during a video news conference.

“I wish they’d take the word Democrat out of their name. I have no idea why the democratic socialists — if you hate the Democratic Party so much, well, then don’t use our god—- name. Go think of your own name.”

He was one of several speakers at a media event promoting the Promise To America, a set of principles created in part by two moderate House lawmakers, Reps. Tom Suozzi, D-N.Y., and Adam Gray, D-Calif., as their party experiences a civil war over its identity and agenda.

The Promise To America is about celebrating “capitalism, safety, fiscal responsibility, effective government, common purpose, and patriotism,” according to its website.

It’s the latest bid by moderate and pragmatic members of the left to distance themselves from the socialist wave that’s already toppled several establishment-backed Democrats.

The intraparty feud has also become a central campaign talking point for Republicans, who have argued that Democrats will try to push a far-left vision of the country beyond what most Americans want if they win the midterms in November.

Carville said during the news conference it was “just common sense.”

“That’s so often what people are forgetting in politics. And for the life of me, I hope … that we do things like this that are popular, are actually helpful, that can help the country. Who’s not for lower crime? I mean, everybody is, but we just need to restate it,” he said.

He maintained that “80% of Democrats really want” what the Promise To America is promoting and criticized the far-left for drowning out those moderate voices.

But just 10 House Democrats have signed onto the pledge so far, which Republicans have argued is evidence that the far-left is really capturing its party. Out of the litany of Democrats running for the House, just five are signatories.

Suozzi argued, however, “We only want 10 members of Congress because we don’t want to make it only about Washington. That’s why we’re going out to the state and local officials.”

Those who have not signed on include House Democrats’ senior leaders, who have said little on the socialist insurgency.

But Gray and Suozzi dismissed the notion that they were not getting enough support from their leaders when asked by Fox News Digital.

“I think the leadership is being very supportive,” Suozzi said of his own experience. “They have a lot to balance. They’ve got the whole country to worry about.”

Gray said, “The efforts on the cable news networks and everything else to nationalize our politics all the time, pretend that, you know, somebody in some big city represents all of us is absurd. … It’s a distraction, this idea that somehow some leader somewhere is supposed to win my district.”

Liberia receives first group of “third country” deportees from U.S., officials say

The West African nation of Liberia received the first group of “third country” deportees from the U.S. on Thursday, including migrants from Latin America, U.S. officials told CBS News.

Roughly 20 deportees from different countries landed in Liberia, after being deported from the U.S.

A U.S. official, however, told CBS News that after the plane carrying the deportees arrived in Liberia, a small group of them resisted and refused to deplane.

They were escorted off the plane, but then returned to it, the official said. Their whereabouts are unknown.

Liberia is the latest country to accept deportees who are not its citizens as part of President Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration and an aggressive White House effort to deport migrants to so-called third countries where they have no ties.

The government of Liberia has said it intends to accept up to 1,200 third country deportees from the U.S. over the next year, and that the new arrivals will be allowed to apply for asylum there.

Liberia is also where the Trump administration has said it is trying to deport Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the man who was wrongfully deported to El Salvador last year and then returned to the U.S. to be prosecuted on human smuggling charges. That effort has been blocked for now by a federal judge in Maryland.

The Trump administration has brokered third country deportation agreements with dozens of nations across the globe, including African countries plagued by armed conflict, political tumult and human rights abuses, including South Sudan, the Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

U.S. immigration officials have also sent regular deportation flights to Ghana, Equatorial Guinea and other African countries that have agreed to receive deportees from other nations.

Human rights activists have denounced the third country deportations as inhumane and illegal under international law, saying some countries are returning deportees to places they fled because of persecution.

But the Trump administration has defended the legality and merits of the deportations, portraying them as an effective way to deter illegal immigration.

For the most part, the administration’s third country deportation effort has focused on migrants whose home countries limit or reject U.S. deportations or who’ve won legal protections from being sent back to their homelands.

Democratic California state legislator Wahab wins US House of Representatives seat

WASHINGTON, Aug 20 (Reuters) – Democrat Aisha Wahab, a member of the California state Senate, ​was projected on Thursday to win a special election to fill a ‌vacant seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, according to multiple U.S. media outlets.

Wahab defeated Democrat Melissa Hernandez, an official with the San Francisco Bay Area mass transit system.

Once sworn in, Wahab, ​an Afghan American, will fill the seat that was held by Democratic Representative ​Eric Swalwell, who resigned in April amid allegations of sexual misconduct, ⁠which he denied. That will give Democrats 213 seats in the House, while Republicans ​will hold 218.

The solidly Democratic district is near San Francisco and San Jose. Wahab will ​be the first Afghan American member of the U.S. Congress. The progressive Democrat was also the first Muslim woman and Afghan American elected to the state legislature.

Wahab had over 53% of the ​votes while Hernandez secured about 47% with 95% of the votes tallied, according ​to NBC News.

United Democracy Project, a super PAC of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, a pro-Israel lobbying ‌group, ⁠spent nearly $2.5 million since early August to boost Hernandez, according to the Washington Post and multiple other media reports.

The lobbying group has become a focus of criticism in some Democratic primary contests this year during intra-party tensions over candidates’ positions on Israel.

Prominent progressive Democrats have opposed ​U.S. support for Israel ​over the U.S.-Israeli war ⁠on Iran, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s close ties to Republicans, and particularly over Israeli attacks on Gaza and Lebanon, leading to an erosion of ​Democratic backing for Washington’s ally.

Wahab and Hernandez will again face ​each other ⁠in November. The winner of that election will hold the congressional seat for a full two-year term.

Wahab, who has positioned herself as a state lawmaker aiming to reduce inequality, had authored ⁠a ​bill that would have made California the first U.S. ​state to explicitly ban caste discrimination. It was vetoed in 2023 by Governor Gavin Newsom, who said existing ​laws already banned ancestry discrimination.

美国决定批准对卡塔尔57亿新元军售

美国国务院决定批准一项或向卡塔尔出售空中加油机及相关设备的军售计划，预计总价值高达45亿美元（约57亿新元）。

美国务院星期四（8月20日）在一份声明中说，卡塔尔提出购买最多四架KC-46A空中加油机，以及发动机、雷达告警接收机、红外对抗系统等相关配件和服务。

声明称，此项军售将有助于提升美国战略区域伙伴的安全能力，从而支持美国的外交政策和国家安全目标；也将增强卡塔尔的防御能力及其与美军及盟军的协同作战能力，并巩固卡塔尔在区域安全中的战略作用。

KC-46A是美国空军装备的最新型加油机，由波音公司基于波音767型客机机身研发而成，首架飞机于2019年1月交付给美国空军。根据波音公司介绍，这款飞机除了空中加油支援外，还具备多任务加油机所需的作战能力与数据传输功能。
