    2026-10-12T09:00:45.715Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/10/12/politics/midterms-republican-losses-trump

‘Trump is dragging the party down’: GOP scrambles to stop steep midterm losses

    2026-10-12T09:00:45.715Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/10/12/politics/midterms-republican-losses-trump

The Republican Party’s midterm campaign has turned into a triage operation just three weeks out from November, as officials race to avert losses in a string of once-safe seats that they increasingly fear could cost them total control of Congress.

The worsening landscape has alarmed GOP operatives across several battleground states, forcing the party to pour resources into traditionally red districts and states at the expense of their once-expansive ambitions in Democratic areas.

And after months of pressing President Donald Trump to ramp up his travel on behalf of key candidates, some Republicans now worry he’s grown so unpopular that his presence on the campaign trail may in some cases be doing more harm than good.

One House Republican running for re-election said of the president’s numbers: “Trump is dragging the party down.”

The grim outlook gripping the GOP follows weeks of polling showing Republicans on track to lose the House amid intense voter anger over the Iran war and rising cost of living — and at grave risk of losing their once-solid majority in the Senate as well.

The widening number of competitive races has complicated Republican leaders’ plans to make up ground by unleashing hundreds of millions of dollars down the stretch. Despite a massive cash advantage fueled in part by pro-Trump super PAC, MAGA Inc., the spending so far has failed to significantly shift Republicans’ fortunes as more money gets diverted toward races once counted on as comfortable wins.

Already, the Senate Leadership Fund, the top GOP super PAC in Senate races, has suspended its ad reservations in North Carolina and plowed at least $10 million into Kansas, which has not elected a Democrat to the Senate since 1932. It also recently invested $5 million in South Carolina to boost incumbent Sen. Darline Graham amid concerns among some Republicans she’s losing ground to Democrat Annie Andrews in the deep red state.

That’s on top of the more than $100 million that the Senate Leadership Fund has spent in Texas to boost Ken Paxton, who is scrambling to shore up GOP support in his race with Democrat James Talarico after a bruising primary campaign. Trump himself has now traveled to Texas three times in one month to rally voters on Paxton’s behalf.

“We were all hoping the war was going to be over now, but it’s not,” said one Trump adviser. “We shouldn’t have a fight in a place like Texas, but obviously we do.”

Top Republicans steering spending on the House side are also expected to narrow their focus in the coming days, doubling down on races they see as winnable while slashing their investment in candidates whose fortunes are fading, multiple people familiar with the matter said.

That winnowing will mark the latest acknowledgment of the challenge facing Republicans — and an effort to concentrate resources on the select candidates capable of defending their seats, or flipping blue districts, and limiting Democrats’ encroachment overall.

The Cook Political Report dealt the latest blow on Friday, moving 18 House races toward Democrats. Those contests include five toss-up seats across Iowa, Pennsylvania and Washington that the closely watched analysis projects the Democratic candidates are now more likely to win.

The Senate map has also provided little reassurance for the GOP. Paxton is suffering a drip-drip of damaging audio leaks from a private fundraiser, further frustrating Republican officials who already believe he’s running a poor campaign. Democrats hold polling leads in swing states like Georgia and North Carolina, while making insurgent runs in solidly red states like Alaska and even Kansas.

“I don’t know that the environment could possibly get worse than it is,” said Jason Roe, a Michigan GOP strategist advising Rep. Tom Barrett, who is in a neck-and-neck race against Democratic challenger Will Lawrence. “If we lose this, it couldn’t have been won.”

Inside the White House, Trump and his top advisers are clear-eyed about the difficult odds of keeping the House and the rising threat to the Senate majority, people familiar with the matter said.

But there is still optimism that Republicans can limit their losses and turn the prospect of a blue wave into little more than a ripple. Trump advisers expect the polls to tighten in swing races in the campaign’s final days, especially as more ads hit the airwaves and less-engaged Republican voters begin to tune in.

“I’m not saying we are going to f***ing win, it is going to be so great. No, I am not saying that. But do we get wiped out? No, we aren’t gonna get wiped out,” said another House Republican running for re-election.

Some strong GOP candidates are likely to outperform the generic ballot polling that shows Democrats favored by a healthy margin, the people familiar argued. At the same time, they’re counting on a handful of far-left Democratic candidates to underperform. And even at the current margins, they note, the difference between Republicans losing the House or expanding their majority is only a matter of a few percentage points across a handful of races.

“This election is going to come down to one side saying Republicans have not cleaned their mess up fast enough, and what we are saying is, ‘We know you are struggling, but these are the things we are doing to make your life better and, by the way, they are crazy,” another Republican told CNN.

For his part, Speaker Mike Johnson has vowed to do everything he can to hold the majority and is campaigning in more than 40 districts and 20 states leading up to the election.

“Speaker Johnson is not slowing down and helping to get resources to every district that will decide the majority,” Johnson’s political communications director, Greg Steele, said in a statement to CNN.

While Trump has largely steered clear of swing districts of late, he has shown newfound enthusiasm for the campaign trail that his advisers have rushed to take advantage of, sending him to favorable areas across the country where they believe he can help GOP turnout. They’ve shrugged off any talk of Trump needing to lay low given his sagging approval ratings, arguing that the midterms are going to be a referendum on his presidency no matter what.

“The panic is unwarranted and it’s unfounded,” one White House official said of the GOP’s midterm trajectory. “It’s all going to come down to who has the ability to turn out their low-propensity voters. … That’s why we’re going where we’re going: To jazz up the base.”

In a statement, White House spokesman Davis Ingle called Trump “the unequivocal leader, best messenger, and unmatched motivator for the Republican Party.”

National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman Mike Marinella said in a statement, “House Republicans have a more favorable map, a stronger ground game, historic fundraising and spending advantages and battle-tested incumbents while Democrats are stuck dragging their unelectable socialist nominees across the finish line.”

A senior Republican National Committee official argued that pollsters and strategists are writing off the GOP’s chances in the midterms too soon.

“The first ones to rush and get on the phone with you all in these times are not the ones in the fight,” the official told CNN. “They would rather just say nobody knows what they are doing and everything is doomed than take an objective look at what is happening.”

Trump’s rallies — which included a stop in Texas on Thursday and a trip to upstate New York on Friday to stump for gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman — have bolstered Trump’s mood and view of Republicans’ chances, the White House official and others familiar with his comments said.

Nevertheless, Trump has tacitly acknowledged that his presence may not be helpful everywhere at a time when large majorities are frustrated with his economic policies and oppose the Iran war.

The president has declined to rebuke GOP candidates who have broken with him on the war and tariffs out of an understanding that they “need to run a campaign,” the White House official said — though those Republicans have still typically cleared the move with the White House ahead of time.

Trump has also stayed away from some races where vulnerable Republicans have tried to carve out an identity separate from him, such as Maine Sen. Susan Collins. The president isn’t currently expected to travel to Maine ahead of the midterms, people familiar with the matter said, though they cautioned his schedule fluctuates and that could change.

Still, there’s little expectation that any GOP candidate can fully escape the gravitational pull that Trump has exerted on the political landscape since returning to the White House.

And after nearly two years of demands for GOP unity, Trump advisers have counseled Republicans that their best hope in the final weeks is to make their own pitches for why they should get another term in Congress — and crucially, what they plan to do once they’re there to assuage voters’ frustrations.

“We’re fighting it out individually now,” the Trump adviser said. “It’s ugly out there for both sides, and it’s going to be hand-to-hand combat.”

    “这就好比在才艺秀里跟在 Baton twirler(注: Baton twirler指挥舞指挥棒的表演者,此处指舞台焦点)后面出场,”罗杰斯说,“你懂的,根本赢不了这场比赛。”

John Kennedy has a quip for every occasion. Is that enough to beat the ‘goobers’ in the 2028 GOP field?

    2026-10-12T09:00:45.318Z / CNN

    Highland, Michigan—

After hearing Louisiana Sen. John Kennedy unload his characteristically colorful combination of homespun quips, over-the-top insults and Talladega Nights movie quotes to reporters on Friday, former Rep. Mike Rogers, the Michigan Senate GOP candidate with whom Kennedy was campaigning, knew his own words wouldn’t be getting much attention.

“It’s like following the baton twirler in the talent show,” Rogers said. “You know, you’re never going to win that thing.”

Kennedy has taken his act on the road, campaigning with GOP Senate nominees in several states in the closing weeks of this year’s midterm elections — including stops in Ohio on Thursday and Michigan on Friday, where he repeatedly declared that Rogers “pisses excellence.” The 74-year-old Kennedy is “tired,” he said, but still thinking about making a second trip to Alaska and a stop in Texas, both also home to key Senate races, ahead of Election Day.

It’s a calendar that could serve as a prelude to a bid for national office. Kennedy says he is weighing a run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2028. He’ll have to decide soon after the midterm elections whether to seek the White House or run for a third term in the Senate.

He told reporters in Michigan on Friday that as he thinks about a presidential run, his biggest concern is “the goober factor.”

“If a bunch of goobers run, and I don’t think I can be effective in the Senate anymore, then I would consider it,” he said. “But right now, I’m running for reelection.”

What are the differences, CNN asked, in where the so-called “goobers” want to steer the GOP and where Kennedy would like to move the party?

“Let me tell you about goobers — and I’m not going to name goobers,” Kennedy said. “Being a goober is a lot like pornography. It’s hard to define, but you know it when you see it.”

Later Friday night, Kennedy drew loud cheers and a number of laughs during his speech to what Rogers’ campaign said was about 900 attendees at a barn party in Highland — situated in Oakland County, an affluent and highly educated Detroit suburb that is a swing region in Michigan elections.

But interviews with attendees afterward laid bare the challenge that would confront the Louisiana senator if he tries to translate what works in Washington, and in front of audiences that have never seen him in person before, onto the presidential campaign trail — where voters would demand that he prove he isn’t a “goober” himself.

Even some of Kennedy’s biggest admirers at the barn party told CNN on Friday they thought his wit wouldn’t be enough to fuel a presidential campaign.

Jan Dillaha, a 64-year-old manufacturing company executive in Indian River, said she loves Kennedy and reeled off some of her favorite lines from the senator. She even noted that, in his speech Friday night, Kennedy had omitted one go-to Kennedyism.

“He left out ‘hobo on a ham sandwich,’ which is my personal favorite,” she said.

But as for 2028, Dillaha said, Kennedy “would not be my first pick,” even though she thinks he’d do well as president.

“To be honest, speaking in there, most of the stuff that he said tonight, I’ve heard before,” she said. “But, you know, you can’t do that over the course of two years and not have people get tired of it. So he’s going to have to up his game there.”

James Semerad, a 70-year-old retired Navy veteran who lives in Clarkston — but once lived in Louisiana — said Kennedy “has a unique way of saying stuff” that connects with the state.

“He’s got good stage presence. He’s got good charisma. And he makes issues funny, rather than just very serious,” Semerad said. “He has a way of twisting some really important points in a way that makes you think. He’s a funny guy, but he’s also a really smart guy.”

What about Kennedy for president in 2028?

“He’ll have to change up his persona somewhat,” Semerad said, “to look more presidential.”

On Capitol Hill, Kennedy’s sharp exchanges with witnesses in congressional hearings often make news. And sometimes, he misfires. That was the case last month, when Kennedy helped Missouri Sen. Eric Schmitt hold up a poster displaying text messages as Schmitt accused former special counsel Jack Smith of a conspiracy based largely on Schmitt confusing the Atlanta Hawks and the University of Iowa Hawkeyes.

For all his homey, sometimes movie-inspired and occasionally crude witticisms, Kennedy is also a clear-eyed political operator. He is a former Democrat who switched parties in 2007, after the party’s massive midterm losses, when he was state treasurer. He said his own political operation has been conducting polling on key races this year.

And he acknowledged to reporters that the GOP is facing intense political headwinds this fall.

“The cost of living is a big issue. And it’s more than just dollars and cents. I sense it on both sides. … It’s cost of living, but it’s also people. They’re angry, and if they’re not angry, many of them feel a deep melancholy — and they just feel like, you know, these people in Washington, they don’t listen and they don’t care,” Kennedy said. “And the system no longer works for them.”

Kennedy put his wit to work for Rogers on Friday, first at a joint stop at a manufacturing plant in Sterling Heights, and then at the barn party. For the second event, Kennedy had kept his blue-striped button-down shirt, navy blazer and quartz field watch on a blue and yellow nylon strap, but ditched the charcoal trousers and light brown penny loafers he’d worn earlier in favor of lighter-wash jeans and cowboy boots.

In a roughly nine-minute speech, Kennedy unloaded a series of quips that showcased what has made him a popular figure with those politically plugged-in enough to catch television highlights of congressional hearings and see his interviews on news programs.

If one were to get in between Rogers and what’s best for Michigan, Kennedy told reporters, “he will eat you up and spit the bones on the floor. He will beat you like you stole Christmas.”

He said Democrats are captured by a “Hamas wing” of the party that includes Rogers’ Democratic opponent, Abdul El-Sayed, as well as New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

And in their debate Thursday night, Kennedy said, Rogers “ripped Dr. El-Sayed a new ashtray.”

Then, he waded into culture wars — sometimes in confusing fashion.

“The good people of Michigan and the good people of America do not deserve to be governed by people who hate George Washington and Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt and Dr. Seuss and Mr. Potato Head,” he told the crowd at the barn party.

He also suggested to the crowd that Democrats carry around bags of kale for energy boosts.

“This is America. You can do what you want. But to me, kale tastes like I’d rather be fat,” he said.

In about two dozen interviews with attendees, some of whom said they did not want to be named, the possibilities that came up most frequently when discussing the looming race to replace President Donald Trump were Trump’s vice president, JD Vance, and his secretary of state, Marco Rubio. Republicans were split roughly evenly in who they preferred between the two.

Joe Sanda, a 65-year-old company controller who lives in Lake Orion, said Kennedy would rank “maybe in the top five or something” of Republican candidates if he runs for president.

“He’s a great communicator,” he said. “I’ve seen him on TV before. He’s really good. He’s entertaining.”

Dave Mann, a 70-year-old retired equipment operator from Fenton, said he would not vote for Kennedy if he runs for president in 2028.

“I think pretty much all politicians are crooked, him included,” he said.

Rogers wouldn’t weigh in on Kennedy’s 2028 prospects, telling CNN the Louisiana senator is “a wonderful guy” and that he’s “known him for a few years,” but that he can’t think past this year’s election.

What does the GOP need in its 2028 nominee?

“A winner,” Rogers said. “I think the next two years is going to say a lot about what direction the party goes.”

“Heaven forbid”: Mike Johnson says he intends to remain GOP leader if Republicans lose House majority

    October 12, 2026 / 7:12 AM EDT / CBS News

House Speaker Mike Johnson said he intends to serve as GOP leader if Republicans lose their House majority in November — but he remains bullish about the party’s chances despite significant headwinds.

“In the unlikely scenario where we lost the majority, I would expect my colleagues would ask me to continue leading this conference, even if we have divided government,” Johnson told CBS News’ Robert Costa in an interview near Johnson’s hometown of Shreveport, Louisiana.

Johnson, who has led House Republicans as speaker since 2023, has repeatedly pushed back on questions about his plans if the GOP loses the majority in the lower chamber in November. Known for his optimistic outlook, the speaker has expressed confidence that Republicans will hold on to the chamber, or even grow their narrow majority. But midterm dynamics traditionally boost the party opposing the party in control of the White House, and the unpopular war in Iran, high gas and diesel prices and other controversial Trump administration policies have added to those challenges for the GOP.

Last week, a comment Johnson made to Fox News on his plans for his future fueled speculation that he could retire from politics, as he suggested that he could go back to his hometown of Shreveport and start a lawn business if the GOP loses the House majority.

“It’s just hilarious,” Johnson said of the interest the comment spurred, telling Costa that the remark was “tongue in cheek.”

“What I was trying to say to them is that throughout my whole life, my number one objective is to be of my highest and best use to God and to my country, and that’s always what I’ve thought,” Johnson said. “And I was trying to make the point that if God has a different design, then we’ll follow that. But what I believe is, I’m going to be the speaker of the House for at least two more years.”

But Johnson added, “If, heaven forbid, we lost the majority, I would expect my colleagues would call upon me to continue to lead the conference in divided government.”

“My intention is to stay and serve, and that’s what I’ve been doing, as best I can,” he said.

Johnson has been campaigning heavily in recent weeks, with plans to hit 40 districts in 22 states before polls close on Election Day. He made a case for his continued leadership — whether in the majority or the minority — pointing to the millions of dollars he’s brought in for Republicans this cycle, his busy travel schedule, and his work to corral a sometimes volatile GOP majority in this Congress.

“I’m not sure what the case would be for any alternative,” he said. “I intend to stay and lead.”

When pressed by Costa on whether he has it in him to be a tough, combative minority leader in the current political environment, Johnson pointed to his time on the House Judiciary Committee and his defense of President Trump during his two impeachment trials.

“I was a litigator in my past life — constitutional law attorney. We can be tough, but we can be happy warriors,” he said. “That’s what Ronald Reagan was. That’s what I fashioned myself as.”

But Johnson was clear: he has “no intention other than winning this majority and serving as speaker.”

“That is what’s going to happen,” Johnson said. “And I’m telling you, I’m leaving it all in the field to do it.”
