Trump signs order to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America

WASHINGTON, Aug 27 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump renamed Lake Ontario “Lake America” on Thursday, escalating a feud with Canada that has already ​spawned tariffs on tens of billions of dollars in cross-border ‌trade.

The change would take effect immediately, said Trump, who also ordered the Gulf of Mexico renamed as the Gulf of America after assuming office last year.

“We’re going to be changing the ​name of Lake Ontario effective immediately to Lake America,” Trump ​told reporters in the Oval Office.

“The lake change, the Lake ⁠of America, was something I’ve been thinking about for a long ​time, actually,” Trump said.

Trade talks between the U.S. and Canada collapsed ​last week with each side blaming the other for derailing three days of intensive negotiations.

One of the five Great Lakes of North America, Lake Ontario borders both ​the Canadian province of Ontario and the U.S. state of New ​York.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s office did not immediately respond to a request for ‌comment.

⁠After Trump ordered the Gulf of Mexico renamed in January 2025, it took about two weeks for the U.S. Board on Geographic Names, as part of the Department of the Interior, to update the ​official federal nomenclature ​in the Geographic ⁠Names Information System to reflect the changes, effective immediately for federal use.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll in May ​showed 72% of Americans had a favorable view of ​Canada – a ⁠higher share than any other country in the survey had, including Germany and Mexico – and about twice Trump’s own approval rating.

About 52% of ⁠the ​surface area of Lake Ontario is in ​Canada, with the remainder in New York under a 1909 treaty.

12 races scramble Senate battlefield as Democrats eye comeback

With the clock quickly ticking toward Election Day 2026, Democrats are increasingly optimistic about recapturing the Senate majority in this year’s midterms.

“We are going to take back the Senate. Republicans thought they had the Senate locked down, but now Democrats, we are on the path to victory. We’ve blown the map wide open,” longtime Senate Democratic Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York touted last week.

Schumer made his prediction to reporters after The Cook Political Report, a leading nonpartisan election handicapper, shifted crucial Senate races in Texas and Iowa from leaning towards the GOP to toss up.

Republicans — as the party currently in power — were already up against traditional political headwinds that have historically led to a loss of congressional seats during midterm election years. Add to that the challenging climate fueled by persistent inflation, high gas prices tied to what polls show is an unpopular war with Iran and President Donald Trump’s underwater approval ratings.

But Democrats have problems of their own as they try to win back control of the Senate in the midterms, including a party brand that public opinion polling indicates is extremely unpopular. And high-profile victories this spring and summer by left-wing and socialist candidates over establishment rivals in Democratic primaries are giving Republicans extra ammunition to portray all Democrats as extremists.

The Democrats’ path to the majority starts with holding the open seat in battleground Michigan, where far-left contender Abdul El-Sayed edged out more moderate Rep. Haley Stevens in this month’s primary. El-Sayed’s victory, and recent polling that suggests he’s yet to unify his party’s base while former Republican Rep. Mike Rogers cruised to the GOP nomination unopposed, pushed the race from leaning towards the Democrats to toss up in the latest Fox News Power Rankings.

The Power Rankings currently include six states where neither Democrats nor Republicans have an edge: Michigan, along with GOP-controlled seats in Iowa, Texas, Ohio, Maine, and Alaska.

Sen. Tim Scott, the chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, told Fox News Digital earlier this year that he was “incredibly optimistic” the GOP can not only hold but expand its current 53–47 majority in the upper chamber.

Scott still feels optimistic, saying in an interview Sunday on NBC News’ “Meet the Press,” “I am very confident that we will be in the majority at the end of November this year.”

Here’s a look at the most competitive Senate seats in play that could potentially flip the balance of power in the chamber, starting with the races in the Fox News Power Rankings that are up for grabs.

The Toss-Up States

1. Michigan

The race in the Great Lakes battleground state, where Democratic Sen. Gary Peters is retiring, is a top flip opportunity for Republicans.

Rogers, who is the GOP Senate nominee for a second straight cycle, came within 20,000 votes of victory two years ago, out of roughly 5.5 million cast.

As El-Sayed works to unify his party’s base after a combustible primary battle with Stevens, Rogers is increasing his efforts to court disaffected Democrats who may not be thrilled with their nominee’s far-left positions on key issues.

2. Texas

The national environment is also boosting state Rep. James Talarico, who is hoping to become the first Democrat since 1988 to win a U.S. Senate election in right-leaning Texas.

Talarico, who has hauled roughly $60 million in fundraising so far this year, an eye-popping figure, defeated Rep. Jasmine Crockett in the March primary to secure the Democratic nomination.

He’s facing off in the general election against Trump-backed Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.

The MAGA firebrand, carrying plenty of political baggage, ousted longtime Republican Sen. John Cornyn of Texas in an expensive and combustible GOP nomination battle that went into overtime.

The Fox News Power Rankings recently shifted the race in Texas from lean Republican to toss up.

3. Maine

Moderate Republican Sen. Susan Collins is running for re-election for a sixth six-year term in blue-leaning Maine.

Collins is the only Republican senator running for re-election this year in a state that then-Vice President Kamala Harris carried in her 2024 presidential election bid against Trump.

But the longtime senator, who has been a top Democrat target for multiple election cycles, has proven tough to beat.

Collins is being challenged by former Maine state Senate President Troy Jackson, the Democratic nominee.

Jackson was overwhelmingly backed for the nomination last month at a state party convention. He replaced oysterman and combat veteran Graham Platner, who won the June Democratic Senate primary but quit the race amid a slew of controversies, including an allegation of rape from a woman he previously dated, which he denied.

The race is rated a toss up in the Fox News Power Rankings.

4. Ohio

Democrats scored a major recruiting victory last year when former Sen. Sherrod Brown announced he would challenge Republican Sen. Jon Husted.

A former lieutenant governor, Husted was appointed to the Senate a year ago after then-Sen. JD Vance stepped down to serve as vice president to Trump.

Ohio, once a premier general election battleground, has turned solidly red over the past decade, and Democrats view Brown as their only competitive candidate in the race to serve the remaining two years of Vance’s term.

Brown lost re-election in 2024 by roughly four points while Trump carried Ohio by 11 points.

Ohio is listed as a toss up in the Fox News Power Rankings.

5. Iowa

Republicans are defending an open seat in Iowa, a onetime swing state that’s shifted to the right over the past decade.

But the GOP rallied around Rep. Ashley Hinson, who is backed by Trump, in the race to succeed retiring Republican Sen. Joni Ernst.

Hinson, a former local TV news anchor who flipped a Democratic-held seat in 2020, is seen as a rising star in the party.

State Rep. Josh Turek, a Paralympian, won a contested and expensive Democratic primary over more progressive state Sen. Zach Wahls. Turek is boosted by high inflation, soaring costs for farmer, and lagging economic growth, in one of the nation’s top agricultural states.

Trump carried the state by double digits in 2024, but the Senate race is rated a toss-up in the Fox News Power Rankings.

6. Alaska

Democrats were given a big boost in the red-leaning state when former Rep. Mary Peltola announced in February that she would challenge GOP incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan.

Peltola lost re-election in 2024 in the at-large district that covers the entire state by three points, while Trump carried Alaska by 11 points.

Benefiting Peltola, the first Alaska native to represent the state in Congress, is the appearance on the general election ballot of a second Dan Sullivan, a former teacher who announced his campaign in May.

Republicans have criticized the other Sullivan’s candidacy as a likely ploy to confuse voters in a crucial Senate race, which the candidate has denied.

The race in Alaska is rated a toss up in the Fox News Power Rankings.

GOP-held seat Democrats aim to flip

North Carolina

Republicans are defending an open seat in the southeast battleground state, with GOP Sen. Thom Tillis retiring at the end of this year.

The GOP quickly rallied around former Republican National Committee (RNC) Chair Michael Whatley, who has Trump’s backing after steering the national party committee in the 2024 election.

Democrats, meanwhile, landed their top recruit when former two-term Gov. Roy Cooper jumped into the race a year ago. Cooper enjoys tons of name recognition in North Carolina and is 6-0 when it comes to running statewide races.

North Carolina voted for Trump in the 2024 election, but the Fox News Power Rankings currently rate the race as lean Democrat.

Democrat-held seats the GOP aims to flip

New Hampshire

Republicans see another flip opportunity in New Hampshire, where a long-held Democratic Senate seat in New England’s only swing state is opening thanks to the retirement of Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, who is the first woman in U.S. history to be elected governor and senator.

Four-term Rep. Chris Pappas is expected to capture the Democratic Senate nomination in the state’s early September primary.

Meanwhile, former Sen. John E. Sununu, who has Trump’s endorsement, is favored to win the GOP primary over former Sen. Scott Brown, who served as Trump’s first-term ambassador to New Zealand.

Sununu is the older brother to former Gov. Chris Sununu.

The Fox News Power Rankings currently rate the race as lean Democrat.

Georgia

Republicans view first-term Sen. Jon Ossoff as the most vulnerable Democrat seeking re-election in 2026.

Ossoff, first elected in that 2020 race, built a massive war chest for his re-election in the southeastern battleground while the GOP faced a nasty three-way primary battle for its nomination in the crucial sunbelt battleground state.

In November’s midterms, Ossoff will face Republican Rep. Mike Collins, who was backed by Trump days ahead of the state’s June GOP primary runoff election.

Georgia narrowly voted for Trump in the 2024 election, but the Fox News Power Rankings currently rate the race as lean Democrat.

Long-shot expansion opportunities

Nebraska

Republican incumbent Sen. Pete Ricketts, a former governor, is seeking a full six-year term in the Senate representing the red-leaning state.

He’ll face off in the midterms with former union leader Dan Osborn, an independent candidate backed by Democratic-affiliated groups and donors, who is making his second straight run for the Senate.

Democratic nominee and former pharmacy technician Cindy Burbank dropped out of the race, in a move to boost Osborn.

The race is rated likely Republican in the Fox News Power Rankings.

Kansas

GOP Sen. Roger Marshall is seeking a second term. He’s being challenged by Democratic nominee Adam Hamilton, a pastor.

The Fox News Power Rankings recently moved the race from solid to likely Republican.

Minnesota

The retirement of Democratic Sen. Tina Smith is giving the GOP hopes they can flip the seat in the blue-leaning state.

Former NBC sports reporter turned conservative pundit and activist Michele Tafoya won the GOP nomination. She’ll face off with progressive Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, who defeated more moderate Rep. Angie Craig in the Democratic primary.

The race is rated likely Democrat in the Fox News Power Rankings.

Deadly Nepal flood highlights glacier risks in warming Himalayas: “The new normal”

The deadly flash flood in Nepal on Wednesday was likely caused by a huge chunk of a glacier that broke off and temporarily dammed a river, according to preliminary investigations by scientists. That may have led to the backed-up water surging downstream with enormous force a few hours later, they suggested.

Scientists are still piecing together information from satellite and ground-level data to figure out exactly what happened to cause the flood, which killed hundreds of people and left over a thousand more missing, including foreigners and pilgrims.

The U.S. Geological Survey on Wednesday reported a magnitude 5.2 glacier collapse that sent debris flowing downstream with catastrophic impact on communities. It said its determination was based on data from nearby seismic stations, long-period seismic waves and satellite imagery.

“A lower part of a glacier has really come off,” said Jakob Steiner, a geoscientist at the University of Graz in Austria who is currently based in Bangladesh. “If you look at the imagery it’s like someone cut with a huge knife through the whole lower part and it fell off.”

Steiner said a mass of glacial ice dropping from a great height could have felt like a bomb exploding, resulting in the chaos that followed.

Scientists said it is too early to draw a direct connection between global warming and Wednesday’s catastrophe. However, they said that as Earth’s temperature rises because of human activities such as burning oil, gas and coal, the chances of such disasters increase, especially in the Himalayan mountains, which are warming considerably faster than many other parts of the world.

“We have to be cautious and not draw a connection yet. However, rising temperatures are changing the Hindu Kush Himalaya region and melting glaciers,” said Saswat Sanyal, a disaster risk reduction specialist at the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, a climate research group based in Nepal’s capital of Kathmandu.

The Hindu Kush Himalaya region spans roughly 2,175 miles, from Afghanistan to Myanmar, and is home to the highest mountains in the world, including Mount Everest. It contains the largest volume of ice on Earth outside the two polar regions and is the source of water for 12 rivers that flow through 16 Asian nations.

Those rivers provide fresh water to some 240 million people living in the region, and about 1.65 billion people further downstream, the climate research group said in a 2023 report. The group warned the melting of the glaciers would be a disaster for all of those people.

In this week’s catastrophe, hundreds have lost their homes across the Himalayan region, and officials reported large-scale damage to critical infrastructure, including hydropower dams, roads, buildings and bridges in the region.

Sudden rise in water levels gave no chance to escape

Water levels in rivers across the flood-affected region rose by as much as 9 meters (29.5 feet) in 30 minutes as a result of the surge from the glacial detachment upstream, researchers at the climate research group said.

“It was a huge rise, a huge surge of water that happened suddenly,” said Sanyal.

Preliminary evidence suggests a large volume of ice and rock may have plunged into the Lhende Khola, a tributary of the Bhote Koshi River. Researchers said the collapse could have displaced water and picked up loose sediment and boulders, producing a powerful surge downstream. Researchers are also examining whether debris temporarily dammed the river before the impounded water burst through, magnifying the flood.

Steiner said the area has a history of destructive mountain hazards. Floods originating from a glacial lake struck the same valley in 2025, while an ice and rock avalanche occurred elsewhere in the area in 2024. The broader Langtang region was also hit by devastating avalanches during Nepal’s 2015 earthquake.

Climate change increasing risks in the Himalayas

The Hindu Kush Himalaya is warming rapidly, driving major changes in glaciers, snow cover, permafrost and mountain slopes, according to climate scientists.

Around 78% of the glacier area, located between about 14,760 and 19,685 feet above sea level, is highly exposed to warming.

“What happened yesterday is unfortunately the new normal. It’s going to get worse from here onwards,” Steiner said.

The last decade was the hottest multi-year period globally since records began, and 2024 was the warmest year ever recorded. U.N. reports have found that between 2000 and 2019, glaciers lost 267 gigatons of ice per year, roughly equivalent to the mass of 46,500 Great Pyramids of Giza.

In a warming world, the reports project the loss of up to 50% of all glaciers — excluding those in Greenland and Antarctica — by 2100, even if global warming can be limited to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit).

Current global policies put Earth on a trajectory to warm by about 2.8 degrees Celsius (5 degrees Fahrenheit) above preindustrial levels by the end of the century.

Research by the Kathmandu-based group has found that glaciers across these mountains are melting at an accelerating rate, with ice-loss rates doubling since 2000.

Melting glaciers can feed and enlarge glacial lakes, increasing the potential for sudden floods.

As glaciers retreat, mountain rock that was previously insulated and supported by ice becomes exposed to warmer temperatures, rain and repeated freezing and thawing. Permafrost — ground that has remained frozen for years — can also thaw, weakening rock faces and slopes.

“The chances that material starts to move down from mountains increase,” Steiner said.

Sanyal said that may be the kind of cascading hazard behind what happened Wednesday in Nepal: an avalanche or glacier collapse that turns into a debris flow, river blockage and devastating flash flood.

The impacts of the rapid glacial melt in the Himalayas will be felt around the world, Izabella Koziell, deputy director general of the Kathmandu-based group, told CBS News in 2023.

“Even if this feels remote to us sitting far away, it is going to affect us — whether that is through mass people movement or sea-level rise. When the glaciers in the Himalayas melt, the ice sheets in Greenland, Arctic and Antarctic are also melting. This means there will be sea level rise, there will be quite dramatic changes in ocean circulation as a result of increase in fresh water into oceans, and this will have huge impacts on us,” Koziell said.

“The people who are losing their livelihoods, of which there are 2 billion people — that’s a quarter of the world’s population — where will they go? They will have to go and find safer places and we will have to offer those safer places for them to live,” Koziell said.

Fast growth and lack of warnings compound disaster

Steiner said about 10% of Nepal’s power production was located in the valley affected by the latest disaster. He said the repeated losses raise questions about whether enough has been done to install warning systems for residents and visitors alike after previous floods and avalanches.

The country’s landscape has long been a draw for tourists, with more than a million people visiting the country annually in recent years.

Scientists say stronger early warning systems, better monitoring and faster cross-border information sharing will be increasingly important as temperatures rise and mountain landscapes become less stable.

But monitoring thousands of glaciers, steep slopes and river valleys across the Himalayan arc is extremely difficult.

And when cascading disasters begin, there may be only minutes to act.

“We don’t have hours,” Sanyal said. “We have sometimes a few minutes to actually prepare.”

Steiner said a “red line” has already been reached where some regions of Nepal are just too risky to live in now.

“We expected previous similar disasters to be a wake-up call for governments in the Himalayan region, but it’s a bit frustrating that the damages never seem to be horrible enough,” Steiner said.

“I’m not super optimistic that from tomorrow onwards there will be clear solutions,” he added. “We know what can be done, but various stakeholders need to coordinate and make things happen.”

Marine One helicopter crew failed to reach air traffic control before safety incident, report says

WASHINGTON, Aug 27 (Reuters) – The crew of a military helicopter carrying President Donald Trump that came too ​close to a passenger jet on August 4 failed to reach ‌air traffic controllers before departing, the National Transportation Safety Board said on Thursday.

The incident involving a plane departing Reagan Washington National Airport raised questions about why the passenger airplane was ​allowed to depart while Marine One was nearby, a time when ​commercial traffic is typically halted.

The NTSB said the Marine One crew ⁠at least twice attempted to give controllers a required three-minute notice of ​departure but were hampered by communications issues. The NTSB said the crew also ​sought to contact controllers through the helicopter facility at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, which was also unsuccessful.

On Tuesday, the head of the Federal Aviation Administration, Bryan Bedford, said the agency relocated an antenna and changed a procedure ​after the incident. The NTSB said checks made after the relocation have shown ​no communications issues.

The NTSB also disclosed there had been other communication issues. On July 30, Marine One ‌and ⁠air traffic control staff met and controllers sought “to discuss concern with recent reports of their not receiving the required 3 minute to liftoff call,” the NTSB said.

The Marine One crew said communications “had been spotty,” the NTSB said.

FAA rules require ​aircraft to remain ​separated by at ⁠least 1.5 miles (2.4 km) horizontally and 500 feet (152 m) vertically around airports. The NTSB said Marine One and the plane ​were at one point separated by 0.82 nautical mile laterally and ​700 feet ⁠vertically.

Envoy Air 3742, an Embraer EMBJ3.SA E170 regional jet, was bound for Pensacola, Florida. Another regional flight, Republic 4700, was 3 miles from Reagan during the incident and ⁠was ​rerouted out of caution.

The FAA imposed permanent restrictions ​on helicopter operations around Washington’s Reagan Airport after the January 2025 midair collision between an American Airlines ​regional jet and an Army helicopter.

UEFA preparing criminal complaint against FIFA’s Infantino, asks U.S. courts for FIFA documents

Europe’s soccer governing body is asking a U.S. federal court for permission to obtain testimony and documents from FIFA entities in Florida that it could use in a planned criminal complaint against embattled FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

In a court filing on Thursday, UEFA said it is preparing a criminal complaint in Swiss courts against Infantino over possible financial mismanagement related to his failed plan to sell future World Cup profits to private investors, including a company founded by Joshua Kushner.

The now-abandoned plan sought to transfer commercial rights linked to men’s and women’s World Cups and the Club World Cup into a new subsidiary called FIFA Forward Enterprise.

UEFA said it filed a request in the southern Florida district court for authorization of discovery “in a foreign proceeding” against FIFA, which has offices in Miami’s Coral Gables neighborhood.

The organization also said it filed documents in a Manhattan court requesting discovery of potential evidence from the New York investment fund Thrive Capital Management, founded by Kushner.

Kushner is the younger brother of Jared Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law. Earlier this month, CBS News reported that Joshua Kushner and former Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger have agreed to purchase the Los Angeles Lakers franchise. The fee is $12.5 billion, sources familiar with the deal told CBS Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, Infantino’s closerelationship with Mr. Trump drew scrutinythroughout this summer’sWorld Cup, which was hosted jointly by the U.S., Mexico and Canada.

Thrive and Kushner were to be the anchor investors intending to pay FIFA $4.2 billion for a 20% stake in a subsidiary that would run the soccer body’s commercial events, including the World Cup.

“UEFA and its counsel are contemplating a Swiss criminal proceeding against Infantino and possibly other FIFA officials for criminal mismanagement under Article 158 of the Swiss Criminal Code,” UEFA’s lawyers state in a 56-page document seen by The Associated Press.

The document suggests the $4.2 billion figure could be a “fraudulently off-market price promoted by Infantino for his own benefit.”

UEFA was the first to react to Infantino’s plan, threatening to boycott any FIFA-sponsored competitions, which would have included the next men’s World Cup, which will be hosted in Europe and Africa. Spain, which is a UEFA member team, is the current holder of the World Cup title.

Infantino was forced toscrap the plan on Aug. 1after his senior adviser, who sat on a White House panel, resigned and Asia’s soccer body joined Europe and North America in opposing it.

UEFA, which issued a blistering statement saying it had lost confidence in Infantino’s leadership at FIFA, first threatened to take legal action on Aug. 3 when it warned FIFA against destroying or hiding any “relevant materials” related to the plan.

“Infantino claimed that the plan would ‘unleash the commercial potential and opportunity that FIFA has,’” UEFA lawyers told the courts. “In truth, it was a vehicle for Infantino and that small circle to acquire a permanent stake in and otherwise profit from FIFA’s most valuable assets to the detriment of FIFA, its members, and other parties within the football family.

“Under the terms Infantino announced, those investors stood to acquire a permanent financial interest in FIFA’s commercial arm for $4.2 billion, implying an absurdly low enterprise value of only approximately $20 billion, a figure that was neither the product of an open, competitive auction, nor tested by any independent valuer.”

Spokespeople for FIFA and Thrive have not responded to requests for comment.

After raging against a key tool in President Donald Trump’s economic arsenal, Senate Democrats quietly green-lit the authority before they left Washington, D.C.

Democrats have bashed Trump’s use of tariffs since they were first floated during his campaign in 2024, and have taken every chance to challenge and push back against duties imposed on other countries throughout his second term.

But nearly the entire Senate Democratic caucus voted in favor of giving Trump limited tariff authority in exchange for bone-crushing sanctions against Russia. Only nine Democrats, and Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., ultimately voted against the package.

Now, Trump has ignited a trade war with Canada, introducing 50% tariffs against the country on roughly $20 billion worth of goods, which has reignited the debate on the campaign trail and as Democrats seek to flip the Senate and corral his authority.

Some warned that giving congressional approval would allow the administration to abuse the power.

“It gives Donald Trump massive new tariff authority that he can use to threaten our trading partners and raise prices on the American people,” Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., said on the Senate floor. “I believe senators will come to deeply regret voting to give Donald Trump this tariff authority.”

Though not directly connected to the authority granted in the sanctions package, which directly deals with countries buying oil from Russia, Trump’s move to enter into a fight with one of America’s top trade partners is what he warned of: giving the White House congressional leeway.

The tariff authority baked into the sanctions package would allow Trump to issue levies of up to 500% on Russian imports and tariffs of up to 100% on the top five countries buying Russian energy, like China and India.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., who, alongside the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, pushed the package for nearly two years, told Fox News Digital that if Trump strays outside the legal confines built into the package, the courts will block him as they did with his sweeping tariffs unveiled on “Liberation Day” last year.

“If Donald Trump wants to break this law, he will be restrained by the courts, just as when he broke the law on tariffs previously,” Blumenthal said. “We can’t do any more than be explicit in limiting his authority to the top five purchasers, and only those countries, by the terms, specific in the legislation.”

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., who went on to vote against the package, told reporters last month that Trump “has shown what he will do with broad tariff authority.”

“Heck, he’s shown what he’ll do even if he doesn’t have authority,” she said.

And Paul, who has been one of the lone Republicans to consistently oppose Trump’s use of tariffs, introduced an amendment alongside Wyden to strip them from the broader package, warning that the duties were nothing more than an additional tax on the American people.

“Do not let sympathy for Ukraine blind you to the reality of tariffs,” Paul said.

One Senate Democrat, Sen. Raphael Warnock, D-Ga., received guarantees from U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer that the tariffs baked into the sanctions package would just be limited to the top five energy trading partners with the Kremlin.

He told Fox News Digital that the concern was that Trump could broadly bend the rules in the package and impose duties as he pleased, which is why he sought guardrails and commitments from the administration.

“It was important to hold Vladimir Putin accountable. He is a war criminal,” Warnock said. “His aggression towards Ukraine has national security implications for us. But at the same time, it was important to put some guardrails on this president. And I think I made considerable progress in making sure that that happens.”

President Donald Trump signed an executive order Thursday afternoon to change the name of Lake Ontario to “Lake America,” his latest escalation as he engages in a tense trade war with Canada.

“‘Lake of America’ was something I’ve been thinking about for a long time,” Trump said from the Oval Office. “We have a gulf and we have a lake. Now, all we need is an ocean. So, maybe we’ll have to change the name of the Atlantic and/or the Pacific. Maybe we’ll change them both.”

Surrounded by large maps of the Great Lakes, Trump said the name change was “effective immediately,” and that his staff had “filed all the necessary papers, documents, everything else.” A White House aide claimed the lake “has most of its volume in the United States” and that the “deepest parts” are in US territory.

Asked why he’s focused on needling American allies, Trump replied: “The Canadian officials have treated us very badly. They’re nasty people.” He added that the Canadians are the “worst to deal with on trade,” calling them “entitled.”

Netflix offers extended look at Grand Theft Auto 6 before November launch

Video game enthusiasts are getting an extended look at Grand Theft Auto 6 before its eagerly awaited commercial launch this fall.

Netflix on Thursday hosted an exclusive preview of the game, which is set to arrive on Nov. 19, for its streaming subscribers.

The 25-minute video features a compilation of clips of GTA 6’s two main protagonists carrying out a series of heists at convenience stores, jewelry stores and diners as they try to escape the cops. The opening sequence shows the partners in mayhem, Jason Duval and Lucia Camino, arriving at an apartment as part of what appears to be a drug deal before getting involved in a shootout with police.

The preview also introduces viewers to the fictional state of Leonida, which is based on Florida, as Jason and Lucia drive around, hit the bars and get caught in scuffles, among other adventures.

The promotional event is part of a partnership between Netflix and Rockstar Games, the company behind the Grand Theft Auto franchise. For those without a Netflix subscription, the preview will air Thursday on Rockstar Games’ website and on YouTube at 9 p.m. ET.

Fans across the country have been eager to get their hands on GTA 6, which is arriving 13 years after the debut of the fifth installment. The game was originally slated for release in 2025, but Rockstar delayed its debut twice, saying the developers needed more time to hone it.

Anticipation is building as the game’s release date approaches. One U.S. Army unit in Georgia is offering active-duty soldiers a four-day pass to play the popular game in exchange for signing a reenlistment contract.

Rockstar has already offered some sneak peeks of the game through GTA 6 trailers and screenshots. Spoilers posted by leakers have also surfaced online, a development the company recently acknowledged on social media.

“While it is unfortunate that the intended game experience may now be impacted by some spoilers, we hope that everyone will wait a bit longer to experience the game for themselves on November 19,” Rockstar wrote on Wednesday.

Investment bank Piper Sandler estimates that GTA 6 will sell 35 million copies by April 2027, according to Forbes. GTA 5 sold 11 million copies on the day it was released in September 2013, the media outlet reported.

What is GTA 6 about?

Tudum, Netflix’s companion site for fans where it offers exclusive interviews and behind-the-scenes content, described GTA 6 as the “most immersive evolution of the series yet.”

The game features protagonists Jason, an Army veteran, and Lucia, the game’s first-ever female protagonist, who landed in Leonida Penitentiary after “fighting for her family,” according to Rockstar’s site. Caught in a criminal conspiracy, they team up to pull off a series of heists and other crimes in Florida.

“Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them,” a description of GTA 6 reads. “But when an easy score goes wrong, they find themselves on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, in the middle of a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida — forced to rely on each other more than ever if they want to make it out alive.”

Other characters in the game include Cal Hampton, one of Jason’s friends, and Boobie Ike, described by Rockstar as a “Vice City Legend” who uses his time on the streets to help him build a business empire.

Republican Rep. Chuck Edwards is lobbying his colleagues to vote against a possible censure over allegations that he repeatedly made unwanted advances toward two female staffers, asserting that familiar conduct toward his employees was not necessarily inappropriate.

“An affectionate friendship is not a sexual proposition,” the North Carolina Republican wrote in a letter, which a source provided to CNN after it was shared in a group chat for members of Congress. “A gift is not sexual misconduct. A compliment is not sexual misconduct. Poetry is not sexual misconduct.”

Edwards’ defense comes after the House Ethics Committee released an investigation earlier this month that found “substantial evidence” that the congressman made unwanted advances toward the staffers and recommended the House vote to censure him. Though Edwards has already abandoned his reelection bid, the letter, first reported by NOTUS, appears to indicate that he wants to avoid the rare rebuke by his colleagues. He insisted that despite the ethics committee investigation and findings, he never broke House rules, even if some may not approve of his behavior.

The congressman argued that the Ethics Committee “repeatedly relies upon interactions that it says ‘could be interpreted as romantic.’”

“But something that could be interpreted as romantic is worlds apart from establishing an unwanted sexual advance,” Edwards wrote.

His letter asserted “there is no House rule prohibiting Members and staff from being friends. There is no House rule prohibiting Members and staff from spending social time together. There is no House rule prohibiting a member from genuinely and deeply caring about people with whom he has worked closely for years.”

The House could vote as early as next week on Edwards’ censure. A fellow member would have to file the censure resolution, and it would have to be voted on within two legislative days — meaning days that Congress is in session.

Censure is a rare punishment in the House. Since it started in the mid 1830s, only 29 members have been censured by the full House. If a majority of the House approves of the censure, the accused member stands in the well of the House to be reprimanded.

In his letter, Edwards also argued that the Ethics Committee did not include details he shared with them about his interactions with staff, including that he gave gifts to both men and women in his office. The Ethics Committee declined to comment.

“I gave gifts to other members of my staff-male and female-including wine, olive oil, cookware, rum, Kennedy Center tickets and even a handgun to a male staffer. Those acts are directly relevant to whether gifts to these two women demonstrated romantic interest or reflected a broader pattern of generosity toward people with whom I worked closely, and that was a practice I exercised in my small business,” he wrote.

Edwards’s letter drew condemnations from some Democrats and advocates Thursday.

Cheyenne Hunt, the executive director of Reckoning Action, a women’s rights advocacy group, said in a statement: “Anyone who thinks a Congressman gifting a young female staffer poetry is appropriate is telling on themselves. Regardless of his intentions, Congressman Edwards has a documented pattern of subjecting his staff to unwanted and inappropriate behavior. He doesn’t get to decide where the line of professionalism gets drawn.”

Said Teresa Leger Fernandez, chair of the Democratic Women’s Caucus: “This is 22 pages of ramblings by someone who refuses to understand sexual harassment or his abusive power over the women who worked for him. His lack of remorse speaks for itself.”

Edwards’ office did not immediately respond to CNN’s request for comment about the letter.

OpenAI, Anthropic, tech leaders warn of “limited window” to defend against AI cyber threats

Leading developers of the most powerful artificial intelligence tools are warning that their technology may soon be used to carry out sophisticated cyberattacks against companies and institutions, ranging from hospitals to technology firms.

In an open letter published Thursday, the leaders of OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft and dozens of other signatories said there is a “limited window” to strengthen cyber defenses and protect against potentially devastating AI-enabled cyberattacks. That window may last only months, it added.

The signatories also include security companies like CrowdStrike and banks including Citi and Capital One.

The same AI advances that could increase risks to public services and technology infrastructure can also help organizations identify and “fix weaknesses” that leave them vulnerable, the letter said.

“If we act decisively, we can use the defenders’ window to make our digital world much more secure,” the letter said.

A recent CrowdStrike report on cybersecurity found that AI-enabled attacks increased by 89% in 2025 compared to 2024.

How to defend against attacks

The companies said that the status quo for cybersecurity “won’t be enough.”

“Longstanding bugs, excessive permissions, misconfigurations, insecure and unpatched software, weak authentication and technical debt in legacy systems have left systems exposed,” the letter said.

Security teams need to be beefed up and invested in, while defenders against AI cyberattacks need to be equipped with the most sophisticated AI-enabled tech, it said.

The letter also called on companies and experts to share their expertise.

“Share threat intelligence and tested playbooks, and measure progress by how many organizations are protected, how quickly attacks are contained, and whether fixes work,” it added.

Call to action

Every organization needs to prioritize cybersecurity, according to the letter. That might include replacing or upgrading older tech systems that are vulnerable to attack.

Specialized cybersecurity firms have an obligation to test defenses against evolving cyber capabilities continually. Governments also have a key role to play in containing cyber threats through coordinated actions and by funding cyber defense strategies at the local, national, and international levels, it added.

Lastly, the letter said it is incumbent upon frontrunner AI companies — including those that signed the document — to fund training, provide “responsible” access to their models, and adequately secure them.
