Federal officials have blocked or clawed back more than $1.6 billion in potentially improper Medicare laboratory payments since President Donald Trump returned to office, including $732 million tied to 157 lab providers booted from the program for alleged fraud.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) said the labs were suspected of billing Medicare for tests that were never performed, tests patients did not need and services billed at higher rates than they should have been.

“When laboratories bill Medicare for tests they never performed, it drains the Medicare Trust Fund and diverts resources away from beneficiaries who need them,” CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz said.

In one case, the owner of a consulting company enrolled 14 labs in Medicare and billed the program more than $24 million, even though CMS said none of the labs appeared to be operating.

CMS has since held back $12 million in payments to the labs and recovered another $7 million. Eleven of the 14 labs have been removed from Medicare, while the remaining three are still under investigation.

CMS said it is using artificial intelligence and other technology to sift through Medicare claims and spot unusual billing that could be a sign of fraud.

The technology looks for billing that falls outside normal patterns and can flag suspicious claims for closer scrutiny. CMS can then hold, reject or deny a claim before Medicare pays it.

Of the $1.6 billion cited by the agency, more than $500 million in suspected fraudulent payments were stopped through 185 payment suspensions after CMS investigated 600 labs.

“The previous administration treated our taxpayer-funded programs as piggy banks for fraudsters,” the White House told Fox News Digital. “That is no longer the case, thanks to President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Dr. Oz, who is an anti-fraud superstar.”

TREASURY HAILS SUCCESS OF ANTI-FRAUD PROCESS THAT FLAGGED AND PREVENTED $99 MILLION IN PAYMENTS TO DEAD PEOPLE

The agency also recovered more than $276 million in overpayments made to 442 suspect labs and said another $127 million in potentially fraudulent payments was prevented after 85 cases were referred to law enforcement.

CMS pointed to two recent cases in Texas as examples of labs suspected of billing Medicare for services they did not provide.

One lab began billing Medicare in late February. CMS said it caught the suspicious activity early and denied $1.2 million in claims.

The lab then changed the way it billed Medicare in early April in an apparent attempt to get around the agency’s safeguards, according to CMS. Officials continued watching its claims and stopped more than $150,000 in additional payments before removing the provider from Medicare later that month.

DR OZ SAYS 800 HOSPICE PROVIDERS SUSPENDED IN CALIFORNIA OVER ALLEGED $1B MEDICARE FRAUD SCHEME

Another Texas lab began billing heavily in May after submitting test claims two days earlier in the year. CMS denied $1.9 million in claims and captured another $1.7 million in payments. The lab remains under review and could be removed from Medicare.

The lab cases are part of a wider Trump administration push to combat improper Medicare billing involving medical equipment, hospice care, skin treatments and other services.

CMS said its Medicare fraud prevention efforts saved $42 billion in fiscal year 2025. So far in 2026, the agency says it has identified $1.8 billion in Medicare overpayments and recovered $378 million in overpayments from post-payment reviews.

Since Jan. 1, CMS has also frozen more than $371 million in Medicare payments involving 267 providers and suppliers. That includes more than $226 million in suspected improper billing for medical equipment, more than $53 million involving skin treatments and more than $23 million involving hospice providers.

“We won’t stop until we’ve restored program integrity and ensured that fraudsters have nowhere left to hide,” Oz said.

Good Good Golf因一则引发性别歧视指控的争议性网络视频广告,正面临愈演愈烈的 backlash( backlash此处译为“ backlash通常译为“反弹、强烈反对”,结合语境译为“强烈批评”)。

Good Good Golf’s very bad, bad week amid backlash over Callaway ad

    August 28, 2026 / 11:08 AM EDT / CBS News

Good Good Golf faces mounting backlash for a controversial online video ad that sparked accusations of sexism.

On Thursday, the digital media company lost its three-year partnership with Callaway Golf, while the PGA Tour said Good Good would no longer sponsor one of the association’s tournaments in November. The ad, co-branded with Callaway, shows a male golfer shoving a female golfer to the ground as she reaches for his driver.

Although Good Good has said the ad was supposed to be a parody of the horror movie “Obsession,” critics have condemned the video for making light of violence against women. Both Good Good and Callaway have apologized for the ad, which has been taken down.

“This is about far more than losing a contract with Callaway. Unless they are looking to limit their market to frat bros, how many want to be seen at the country club or on a course bearing the Good Good Golf brand now?” crisis communications expert Patrick Riccards told CBS News.

He added that while initial apologies from the companies weren’t sufficient, Callaway has made the right move in separating its brand from Good Good Golf.

Good Good “can’t claim they didn’t thoroughly vet the ad before sharing or claim general tone deafness,” he said. “They approved the offensive ad, they produced the offensive ad, they released the offensive ad. And no one seemed to think to pump the brakes and ask if they wanted to be remembered as the golf brand that promotes shoving women to the ground as a sign of superiority. “

Good Good didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

    “Mistakes were made”

Callaway CEO Chip Brewer apologized for the ad on Aug. 25, saying that Good Good Golf had produced the spot, which Callaway then approved.

In the 60-second ad, which promoted Callaway’s new driver co-branded with Good Good, Garrett Clark — a co-founder of Good Good — shoves golfer Alexis Miestowski to the ground as she reaches for the driver. As she is on the ground, he leans over and tells her in a menacing voice, “Do not touch my new driver.”

“That approval should never have happened,” Brewer wrote. “Mistakes were made, and we are taking the matter very seriously.”

Some consumers said the apology didn’t go far enough, urging Callaway to also take steps such as making donations to the Ladies Professional Golf Association and to domestic violence organizations.

Amid this pressure, Callaway announced on Thursday that it has ended its partnership with Good Good and will donate $1 million to organizations that work to prevent violence against women.

“These actions do not undo the harm caused or excuse our role in it,” the company said in a statement. “We sincerely apologize to everyone who was hurt, disappointed or offended by this incident.”

Also on Thursday, the PGA Tour said it had “been informed of Good Good Golf’s decision to step away as sponsor of the event in Austin, Texas, this fall.”

It added, “We agree with their decision to use this time to focus on their organization and the work ahead.”

    Started on YouTube

Good Good Golf was launched as a YouTube channel in 2020 and is now among the largest content creators in the sport, featuring eight men and four women competing in golf and various challenges. It has made-for-TV shows, apparel and other merchandise.

Good Good co-founder Clark posted an eight-minute video this week in which he called the company’s video for Callaway “the worst ad known to man” and said that it is “not what we stand for.”

“I do not support DV (domestic violence) or abuse or any of that of any kind,” he said.

Another Good Good co-founder, Matt Kendrick, told the Wall Street Journal earlier this week that the company plans to donate proceeds from the campaign to an organization that supports women.

Family of Virginia man last heard from at Nepal-Tibet border just before flood hit desperate for info

    August 28, 2026 / 10:03 AM EDT / CBS News
    By Arshad R. Zargar

Anil Goel was among about 10 U.S. nationals at the Rasuwagadhi immigration checkpoint on Nepal’s border with Tibet Wednesday morning just before a torrent of mud and floodwater swept away the facility and everything around it.

On Friday, the 67-year-old Northern Virginia resident and former World Bank employee’s family was still desperate for information on his whereabouts, as the death toll from the devastating floods and mudslides along the Nepal-Tibet border climbed, and at least 1,400 people remained missing.

“We have a photo of our father with his group from the border crossing,” Anurag Goel, Anil Goel’s son, who works as an engineer in Boston, told CBS News.

A photo sent by Anil Goel to his family on Aug. 26, 2026, shows members of his tour group at the Rasuwagadhi immigration office, on the Nepali side of the Gyirong Port border crossing facility on the China-Nepal border, about 35 minutes before the area was decimated by a torrent of flash floodwater. The photo sent by Anil doesn’t actually show him, but rather at least seven members of the trekking group he was with, posing in front of the immigration office sign. His son believes he may have taken the picture.

Anurag said the family got confirmation that his father’s visa was approved at the checkpoint at 8:35 a.m. local time.

Just 35 minutes later, all of the buildings in the area were swept away or covered by a wall of mud and water unleashed by the collapse of a distant rock ledge and the vast Himalayan glacier it had supported.

Goel was on his way to Mount Kailash, about to cross the border from Nepal for a pilgrimage to the sacred mountain in Tibet, when the photograph was taken, his son said.

“We are not sure if they crossed into Tibet,” Goel’s daughter Manvi Goel told CBS News. “It’s possible they did, but my hunch is he was still on the Nepal side when the calamity struck.”

Anil Goel is a seasoned trekker and had visited Nepal 10 times previously for hiking expeditions, having embraced the hobby in retirement.

Anurag told CBS News that when he last spoke to his father, he was “very excited, in his happy place.”

“For him, it was both — a hiking expedition and a religious pilgrimage to Mount Kailash,” Anurag said.

He said his father fell in love with hiking years ago. He traveled with his wife to the Mount Everest base camp in 2015, and before that he climbed Africa’s highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro.

But “the Nepal region had become his favorite place in the world,” daughter Manvi, who lives in California, told CBS News. “Over the years he did many treks. This was his second trek this year. He wanted to take his dear friends from Virginia to understand and explore the region.”

A family photo from January 2019 shows, from left, Anurag Goel, his father Anil, sister Manvi and mother Amita during a trekking trip to Chile’s Patagonia region. Courtesy of the Goel family

Anil documented his treks on YouTube, hoping to attract more people to the region he loved.

On this visit, he was accompanied by 10 other Americans and two Nepali nationals. They were traveling with the Kathmandu-based adventure trekking company Classic Vacations.

Rescue efforts were still ramping up Friday when a swollen glacial lake in the mountains upstream from the affected area, dammed up by debris and filling with meltwater, raised concerns of a possible new inundation looming.

China’s state television network said the flood risks from the lake were “manageable,” but it was another piece of deeply worrying news for thousands of families like Goel’s waiting for word of loved ones.

“We hope for good news but understand the severity of the situation,” Anurag Goel told CBS News. “We also want to understand the nature of the rescue work … and raise awareness so that more foreign governments and agencies are able to help.”

Authorities said about 1,500 people were still missing on both sides of the border Friday, including as many as 540 foreign nationals from 31 countries. The U.S. State Department said as many as 90 Americans could have been impacted.

Local media in Nepal said the number of missing could be as high as 12,000, but there was no confirmation of that figure from authorities.

Nepal’s Foreign Ministry said Friday that it did not need foreign assistance with search and rescue operations, despite offers of help from several countries.

Biden-honored Iraqi official lands on US terror watchlist as Trump State Dept revokes visa

    August 28, 2026 10:09am EDT / Fox News

Taif Sami Mohammed now appears on the US terrorist watchlist after receiving Biden’s Women of Courage Award in 2022

    By Morgan Phillips Fox News

FIRST ON FOX: Four years ago, Taif Sami Mohammed was being celebrated by the United States as one of the world’s most courageous women. Secretary of State Antony Blinken praised the senior Iraqi official as the country’s “Iron Woman,” crediting her with stopping bribes, uncovering schemes that enriched corrupt officials and fighting corruption despite threats against her.

Today, Mohammed is believed to be outside Iraq, on the U.S. terrorist watchlist and can no longer enter the United States.

A State Department official told Fox News Digital that the department revoked Mohammed’s visa this week, marking a dramatic reversal for an official who received one of the Biden administration’s highest-profile awards for women in 2022.

“While the Biden State Department shamefully celebrated and awarded foreigners who threaten our nation, the Trump State Department revokes their visas and ensures these individuals are removed from our country,” Assistant Secretary of State for Global Public Affairs Dylan Johnson told Fox News Digital.

TRUMP ADMIN EYES HISTORIC MASS VISA REVOCATION TARGETING UP TO 200K ASYLUM SEEKERS: REPORT

Taif Sami Mohammed, Iraq’s former finance minister who received an award from President Joe Biden’s State Department, now has no U.S. visa and is on the FBI’s terror watchlist.(US State Department)

“Under President Trump and Secretary Rubio, suspected terrorists will never be allowed to remain in the United States.”

The State Department did not immediately provide details about when Mohammed was placed on the terrorist watchlist or the intelligence that led to that determination.

Mohammed’s fall from Washington’s favor had been building publicly for more than a year.

Republican lawmakers previously accused her of helping facilitate terrorist financing through Iraq’s financial system and urged the Trump administration to take action against her. Reps. Joe Wilson, R.S.C., and Greg Steube, R.Fla., called Mohammed a “key enabler of terrorist funding in Iraq” and pushed the administration to impose sanctions.

Those allegations stand in stark contrast to how the Biden administration described Mohammed when it selected her for the State Department’s International Women of Courage Award in 2022.

At the time, Mohammed was Iraq’s deputy finance minister and director general of its budget department. The State Department described her as a “frontline leader against corrupt practices” who had been integral to preventing corruption in Iraq’s budget.

Blinken went further during the March 2022 awards ceremony, saying Mohammed had “stopped bribes” and uncovered efforts to inflate government payrolls and enrich corrupt officials.

The ceremony, hosted by Blinken and featuring remarks from then-first lady Jill Biden, honored twelve women whom the State Department said had shown extraordinary courage and leadership.

Mohammed later rose to become Iraq’s finance minister, overseeing the federal budget, government spending and Baghdad’s financial relationship with Iraq’s Kurdistan region.

Her troubles have since spread beyond Washington.

An Iraqi court summoned Mohammed and placed her on a judicial wanted list as authorities widened a corruption investigation into former senior government officials, IraqiNews reported Aug. 9, 2025, citing sources familiar with the proceedings.

The investigation grew out of a broader corruption probe involving government contracts and large sums of public money and has reached other former Iraqi officials, according to the report.

Mohammed’s placement on the U.S. terrorist watchlist represents a separate and potentially more serious development. The State Department has not said whether it is connected to the terrorist financing allegations raised by members of Congress, the Iraqi corruption investigation or other intelligence gathered by the U.S. government.
