State Rep David Morales: ‘Few believed that we could ever take on big money… we took them on and we won’

Rhode Island State Rep. David Morales, a 27-year-old democratic socialist endorsed by Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., defeated Providence Mayor Brett Smiley in the Democratic primary Wednesday night, ousting the incumbent after one term.

If Morales wins the general election, he will be Providence’s youngest mayor in history.

“Few believed that a 27-year-old democratic socialist could ever, few believed that we could ever take on big money, corporate real estate interests and endless attack ads – and we took them on and we won,” Morales said in his victory speech, delivered partly in Spanish, after winning by 5 points (52.5%-47.5%).

Smiley, 47, who faced his heaviest media scrutiny over his handling of the Brown University shooting last December, served just one term.

“So neighbors, with the bold agenda and the mandate that we have voted for, let’s get ready. Providence, let’s get ready.”

Morales will face Republican nominee Dave Talan, 77, in November. Republicans hold no seats on the Providence City Council, and Democrats make up a majority of registered voters in the city. Former Vice President Kamala Harris beat President Donald Trump in the city by 51 points in 2024.

“The voters of Providence made their choice, and they chose David Morales as our next mayor in the Democratic primary,” Smiley said in his concession speech after calling Morales. “While I’m not happy with that outcome, I’m so happy and proud of the campaign that we ran.”

Morales, who also received backing from Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., former Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza and several labor unions, campaigned on a progressive platform that included capping rent hikes, expanding affordable housing and raising taxes on polluters and corporate landlords.

“Nearly a year ago today, we launched a campaign centered around a simple vision that the working people who make Providence home deserve to live here,” Morales said. “A simple vision that our neighbors deserve a mayor who will fight for them.”

The contest was part of a broader series of Democratic primary battles between progressive challengers and more established incumbents. Morales sought to tap into frustration over housing costs and the direction of city government, while Smiley argued that his experience and record made him the better choice to lead Providence.

“The same way that we campaigned, we are going to govern — in coalition, side by side with our neighbors,” Morales said.

The primary also featured a battle over rent stabilization. The Providence City Council approved a measure that would have capped annual rent increases at 4% for certain apartments, but Smiley vetoed it in April. The council fell one vote short of overriding the veto in May.

“When working people are getting priced out of the city that they love, then we must cap rent increases at 4% every single year,” Morales said.

“We put housing justice on the ballot.”

Morales also ran as a hard-liner on Providence being a sanctuary for illegal migrants, and against the Trump administration’s effort to enforce U.S. immigration law.

“The city of Providence must use every tool that we have at our disposal to defend our immigrant community and protect us from the fascist ICE agents,” Morales, the son of a Mexican immigrant mother, said.

Trump offers Americans $5,000 each if GOP wins midterms

The president is claiming that he will disburse over $1 trillion in payments to citizens if Republicans retain control of Congress.

President Donald Trump vowed to issue Americans a $5,000 “dividend” that could cost the federal government more than $1 trillion — but it’s contingent on Republicans retaining control of Congress in the 2026 midterm elections.

Trump made the pledge Wednesday night during his nearly two-hour speech at the Republican Party’s midterm convention in Dallas, promising to issue the payment to every adult citizen if the GOP wins both the House and Senate in November.

“Here is my promise: If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000,” Trump said.

The president’s proposal comes as the national debt hovers just north of $40 trillion and the federal government recorded a budget deficit of roughly $1.8 trillion in fiscal year 2025, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

The payments could cost approximately $1.2 trillion, based on the roughly 240 million adult citizens in the United States, potentially adding significantly to the government’s eye-watering borrowing.

It’s unclear where the money would come from, but the motivation behind the idea is crystal clear — Trump wants to incentivize voters who are feeling a pocketbook squeeze to keep his party in power so his agenda is not brought to a screeching halt should one of the congressional chambers flip blue in this year’s midterms.

Vice President JD Vance suggested after Trump’s speech that wealthy Americans could be excluded from the payments, potentially reducing the plan’s overall cost.

“What the president is talking about is fundamentally a dividend for American workers,” Vance told Fox News.

He also defended the proposal’s funding by pointing to the administration’s tariff revenue.

“We’re taking an extraordinary amount of revenue because the president of the United States is standing up to both foreign companies but also foreign countries who have been taking advantage of America’s workers,” Vance said.

Treasury data shows the government collected a record $34.2 billion in customs duties in a single month. Since January, those collections totaled approximately $208.5 billion, still far below the estimated $1.2 trillion cost of Trump’s proposed $5,000 payments.

However, those figures reflect gross tariff collections and do not account for refunds tied to tariffs that were later struck down by the Supreme Court.

The administration has since returned billions of dollars to importers, meaning the amount ultimately available to the government could be lower.

“If you keep us in power and allow us to continue to do these things, then you’re going to share in some of the benefit of this incredible wealth that we are creating in the United States of America,” Vance added.

The White House has not provided specific eligibility requirements or a detailed funding proposal.

Trump said the dividend would be similar to a cash distribution from a successful company to its shareholders and indicated that the money would need to be spent in the United States.

The proposal would require approval from Congress before any payments could be issued. Trump does not have the unilateral authority to distribute the checks.

Trump has previously floated other direct-payment proposals, including a $2,000 tariff dividend and a plan to return a portion of government savings to taxpayers. Neither proposal has become law.

The president’s latest pledge came as he urged voters to treat the midterm elections as a referendum on his administration.

“If the Republicans win, you win with us,” Trump said. “Now all we have to do is win.”

Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., gave the cold shoulder when asked to weigh in on her son’s home being raided by police after his convicted felon roommate was arrested.

Minneapolis police officers found while carrying out a search warrant on August 25 multiple weapons and ammunition in the shared home of Omar’s son, Adnan Hirsi, 20, and his roommate Abdulrahman Abdi, 22. The warrant was obtained after Abdi was pulled over in a routine traffic stop and was found to have no driver’s license or proof of insurance.

Abdi was released and the car was impounded, but a firearm was later found. As a convicted felon, it is illegal for Abdi to possess a firearm, so the property that he shares with Abdi was raided.

Omar’s son is not accused of any wrongdoing, nor is Omar, but the incident raised concerns over Hirsi’s close affiliations. The congresswoman, meanwhile, refused to give her take on the latest controversy.

“What do you know about the situation, why it happened in the first place?” Omar was asked as she walked through the halls of Capitol Hill.

She ignored the inquiry and walked away, but was hounded with more questions on the matter.

“Are you going to advise your son to move from his place? Away from that situation? We were just wondering what you thought about the whole thing,” she was pressed in follow-ups.

The Minnesota lawmaker, Somali refugee and first hijab-wearing woman elected to Congress, continued to walk in silence as she was peppered with questions.

Omar’s office did not immediately respond to a request from Fox News Digital.

Abdi, who faces a weapons charge, was released the day after he was arrested.

He was arrested 10 times in the past and has a felony speeding conviction stemming from an arrest in 2024 for driving more than 100 miles per hour.

She has also voted in support of legislation to prohibit the sale of assault style weapons and to strengthen the universal background check system.

“Not a good look for Ilhan Omar,” Right-wing activist Benny Johnson wrote on X.

Trump administration proposes waiving grace period for H-1B holders after job loss

WASHINGTON, Sept 10 (Reuters) – The Trump administration ​has proposed eliminating a 60-day grace period that allows certain immigrants, including skilled workers on H-1B ‌visas, to stay in the United States and find a new sponsor after losing their job, according to a government notice posted online Thursday.

Under the planned rule change, published in the Federal Register by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, those with H-1B and certain other ​temporary work visas would have to leave the country as soon as their employment ends — a potential ​blow to top American tech companies that rely heavily on foreign workers.

It is the latest ⁠step by U.S. President Donald Trump to limit legal migration since returning to office in January 2025. His ​administration has also introduced higher visa fees for skilled workers and recently paused immigrant visa appointments at U.S. missions around the world ​while it implements a new training program.

Companies impacted by the change could see some disruption, DHS wrote in its proposal, but it said the jobs could go to American workers instead. In some situations, immigrant workers who leave could potentially reapply if their employer petitions ​for them, it added.

“DHS presumes that they will either offer the same jobs to equally qualified U.S. workers or ​go through the I-129 petition process depending on their workforce requirement,” the notice said.

The 60-day grace period, in place since 2017, ‌allows foreign ⁠workers time to find another U.S. job or get their affairs in order — whether selling a home or pulling children out of school — before leaving the country.

H-1B visas, established by Congress in 1990, are especially critical for tech companies seeking talent from India and China, allowing them to fill roles where there is sometimes a lack of qualified ​U.S. workers.

Consultancy companies such as ​Deloitte, PwC and Ernst & ⁠Young as well as outsourcing giants like Tata Consultancy Services TCS.NS, Infosys INFY.NS, HCL Tech HCLT.NS and LTIMindtree LTIM.NS are top H-1B sponsors.

Lawyers for Berardi Immigration Law, which specializes in business-related immigration issues, said ​the move would “sharply compress the timeline HR teams have to manage layoffs and offboarding ​for foreign national ⁠employees.”

If implemented, the change would also apply to E-1 international trader visa holders; E-2 commercial vehicle operator visa holders; L-1 short-term work for executives or managers with international companies; O-1 visas for people “with an extraordinary ability” in science, sports or ⁠the arts; ​and TN professional workers.

It also would impact H-1B1 skilled worker visa ​holders from Singapore and Chile and E-3 specialty worker visa holders from Australia.

The rule is subject to a two-month public comment period before it ​can be enacted into law.

警方公布的案例包括，三人在网络平台“编造灾害成因谣言，谎称地震诱发冰崩山洪，捏造泥石流系人为造成，误导公众认知，扰乱网络舆论秩序”。西藏、黑龙江和安徽警方对三人作出行政处罚。

也有网民被指在网络平台“歪曲救援工作，片面套用他国案例恶意对比，制造负面言论，消解救灾工作成效，误导公众认知”，被西藏警方作出行政处罚。

另外，有人分别在网络平台编造灾害搜救悬赏奖励的不实传言、发布“伤害民族情感的不当言论”，同样遭到行政处罚。

警方也公布，有人在网络平台，被指歪曲事实、混淆舆论导向，破坏清朗网络环境，遭广东警方作出行政处罚。

警方公布的最后一个案例是，有人在网络平台编造吉隆口岸公职人员全部殉职、岗位大量空缺的不实消息，怂恿他人报考口岸岗位，误导公众认知。西藏警方对其作出行政处罚。

西藏警方最后提醒：“网络不是法外之地，编造、传播网络谣言，歪曲救灾事实、消费灾难悲情，扰乱社会秩序的行为，公安机关将依法严厉查处。请广大网民自觉遵守法律法规，坚持理性上网，以官方通报为准，不信谣、不传谣、不造谣，共同维护清朗有序的网络空间。”

The Supreme Court turned back another effort to use Missouri congressional maps supported by President Donald Trump.

“The application for stay presented to Justice Brett Kavanaugh and by him referred to the Court is granted,” Thursday’s ruling read.

The court’s brief order was unsigned and gave no explanation, as is common when the justices handle emergency matters. No justice publicly dissented from the decision.

While the Missouri Supreme Court’s ruling paved the way for use of the old maps, the state’s Aug. 4 primary was already held under the new maps.

“After repeated legal victories defending Missouri’s fair and lawful map, this 11th-hour ruling pulls the rug out from under voters who already cast their primary ballots,” RNC Election Integrity Communications Director Ally Triolo wrote in a statement. “Changing the rules mid-election is reckless and wrong.”

The court’s decision came after U.S. District Judge Stephen Clark ordered Missouri to use the new map, conflicting with a unanimous ruling by the Missouri Supreme Court that said the districts had not legally taken effect and that the state’s older map should be used unless voters approve the changes.

Republican state officials have argued it would violate voters’ federal rights to switch districts before the general election.

The redrawn map was approved by Missouri Republicans in 2025. It dismantles the Kansas City-based 5th Congressional District held by Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, D-Mo., by shifting portions of the seat into neighboring districts and extending the remainder into heavily Republican areas.

The way the map was designed gave Republicans a strong chance of winning seven of Missouri’s eight House seats, compared with the current six-to-two Republican advantage.

Opponents of the map, including the group People Not Politicians, submitted hundreds of thousands of petition signatures seeking a statewide referendum. The Missouri Supreme Court ordered that referendum to appear on the November ballot, meaning voters will decide whether the redrawn map can be used in future elections.

针对12所热门学校推出的双轨机制，或吸引更多居住在2公里以外的孩童报名，蔡锦鸿提醒说，家长应先确保学校地点的选择对孩子和家庭而言是可持续的，包括尽早规划通勤、考虑学校有否充足的学生托管中心名额等。

新加坡管理大学社会学院助理教授何欣熹同样认为，通过2C阶段入学的机会变多后，热门学校可能依然会面临超额报名的局面。“无论报名制度如何变化，我都会建议家长尽量去了解附近的学校，选择一所他们认为适合自己孩子，且通勤不会太困难的学校。”

12所实施双轨录取机制的学校校长对新政策均表示支持。

南洋小学校长王丽萍回应《联合早报》询问时指出，新的双轨录取机制将确保居住学校附近家庭的孩子仍有机会报读南小，同时让校方以适当方式进一步招收不同背景的学生。

她说：“新措施考虑到住家靠近学校以及居住较远的两组学生，随着时间的推移，它将提供有利条件，协助南小建立一个背景更多元的学生群体，并为学生营造更丰富且全面的学习体验。”

家长：为增加学额感到开心 也理智看待

受访的多名家长对调整表示欢迎，但有家长坦言，会理智看待热门学校的学额增加，不会为了名校光环，而牺牲孩子的睡眠。

赖佳恩（36岁，非政府组织合作伙伴关系总监）育有2岁女儿，预计在2031年入读小学。她说，选择小学时，学校与住家的距离仍会是主要考量之一。“睡眠和休息对成长中的孩子很重要，不希望女儿每天花太多时间往返学校。我想先观察女儿的长处、兴趣和需求，最终选择一所能让女儿发挥所长，并感到有归属感的小学。”

王文彬（32岁，工程师）育有4岁儿子，预计2029年入读小学。他是培华长老会小学校友，在2A阶段享有优先权，但不能保证获得学额。

王文彬住在金文泰，距离武吉知马一带的培华超过2公里。他说：“如果儿子无法在2A阶段获录取，我们还可以在2C争取学额，我觉得为了能够就读培华，这样的通勤距离还是值得的。”

家住勿洛的罗裕贵（32岁，会计师）育有3岁儿子，希望为孩子报读道南学校。为了增加入校机会，过去曾考虑搬家。此次报名机制调整，对于住在2公里以外的罗裕贵夫妇来说是好消息。

对于增加2C保留学额后，热门学校会否面对更激烈竞争，罗裕贵认为竞争应该还是会增加，“毕竟好的学校始终是家长向往的选择”。

US weekly jobless claims edge down as layoffs remain low

WASHINGTON, Sept 10 (Reuters) – The number of Americans filing claims for unemployment benefits fell last week, suggesting that ​layoffs remained low and continued to ‌anchor the labor market.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits dipped 1,000 to a seasonally adjusted 206,000 for the ​week ended September 5, the Labor Department ​said on Thursday. Economists polled by Reuters ⁠had forecast 205,000 claims for the latest ​week.

Claims have been hemmed into a narrow ​189,000-212,000 range since mid-July, consistent with a labor market that is regaining its footing after hitting a speed ​bump from the end of spring and ​through much of summer. The government reported last week that nonfarm ‌payrolls ⁠jumped 162,000 jobs in August, the largest gain in five months, after rising 21,000 in July. The unemployment rate was unchanged at ​4.1%.

Despite the ​pickup in ⁠payroll gains, long-term unemployment remains a problem, with the median duration of ​joblessness near 4-1/2-year highs in August. The ​claims ⁠report showed the number of people receiving unemployment benefits after an initial week of aid, ⁠a ​proxy for hiring, slipped 1,000 ​to a seasonally adjusted 1.774 million during the week ended August ​29.

若新加坡无法吸引足够的优秀人才加入政治领导层，后果会在每轮的领导层更新中逐步积累叠加，以致领导层素质、政府决策，以及公共服务的整体素质与效率都受影响。黄循财总理提醒，一旦出现这种情况，要重新建立起系统将更困难，甚至变成不可能。

国会星期四（9月10日）就黄总理和公共服务统筹部长兼国防部长陈振声星期二（8日）发表的政治薪金检讨部长声明展开辩论，共有11名议员和部长参与四小时的辩论，毕丹星是唯一参与辩论的工人党议员。黄总理和陈振声随后分别作总结发言。

朝野双方对于审慎调高部长薪金，以及薪金框架调整的核心原则整体达致共识。辩论主要围绕于薪金框架，以及薪金框架如何落实的技术细节。

星期二的部长声明涵盖两个层面，一是政府接受政治职务薪金检讨独立委员会的建议，对部分政治薪金框架作出调整；二是在具体落实时，不会直接根据新框架调整现任部长薪金，而是采取一次性的加薪，增幅最高为9％。

黄总理发言时阐明，政府的核心考量是如何确保我国政治领导层长期维持高素质。

他说，若无法吸引足够的优秀人才进入政治领导层，新加坡必然会付出代价。这些后果不会一夜之间显现，政府也不会立马陷入停摆，但后果会在一代代的领导层更新中逐渐积累。

十几、二十几年后，领导层素质、政府决策以及公共服务整体素质和效率的差异都将显现。“一旦这些退化迹象变得明显，要重建系统将更加困难，甚至不可能达成。”

国务资政李显龙在国会辩论后在脸书贴文，提醒道：“若我们任由公共部门的薪酬水平脱节，行政质量和政治领导力的衰退将不可避免，过程或许缓慢，但势必无可挽回。”

政府采取循序渐进且克制的落实方法 以取得正确平衡

黄总理指出，政府可有三种落实框架的选项：进一步延后框架调整；立即把政务官薪酬调高至框架建议水平；完全忽视薪金检讨委员会建议的计算方式，采用低于180万元的薪金参照基准。

他强调，这都不是正确的选择。

进一步推迟采用薪金框架只会进一步扩大政务官薪资和市场薪酬之间的差距。“差距越大，未来就越难纠正”；现任政务官的薪金和级别差距也较广，没有必要因为框架调整，就自动并立即把所有人提升到新的薪金水平；可是，无期限地维持他们现有薪金也不合理。

“因此，我决定采取最多9%的一次性加薪，这是考虑到薪金框架已经冻结15年。”

过去两天来，180万元的MR4级薪金参照基准引起不少讨论。但黄总理强调，既然政府委任了独立委员会制定恰当的薪金基准，就不该因为这个180万元的数字在政治上显得尴尬，并擅自窜改委员会达成的结论，而是应通过具体的落实方法回应关切。

陈振声透露，即使所有现任政务官都获得最高9%的一次性加薪，预计整体薪金开支在政府总支出中仍占不到0.05%以及占国内生产总值的0.01%。低于2011年的水平。

黄总理说：“我们回应了多年来累积的缺口，但采取循序渐进且克制的落实方法。这是公平的。不论对当前服务的政务官，或是对于接下来需要揽才以便为新加坡服务的长远需求，都是负责任的做法。”

黄总理：捐出未来五年薪金增幅 税务优惠也一并捐出

黄总理星期二在国会发表部长声明时，承诺未来五年只要他继续担任总理，就会把个人的加薪所得全数捐给公益事业。

他星期四进一步表明，连同捐款所带来的税务优惠也会一并捐出，因此他不会从这次薪金调整中获得任何经济利益。

五年之后，他会继续为公益捐款，但会在非公开的情况下这么做。“因为我不想作出无限期的承诺，由此让人期盼我的接班人也应当这么做。”

2026年台湾地方选举即将展开最后冲刺，最大在野的中国国民党却接连在新竹县、彰化县等传统优势选区爆发内部分裂危机。从新竹县“蓝白合”（国民党和民众党合作）破局，到彰化县长王惠美消极辅选，党主席郑丽文的领导能力正面临前所未有的考验。

这些风暴不仅牵动年底地方选举的胜负，更将深刻影响国民党2028年总统大选的布局与竞争格局。

国民党新竹县长参选人徐欣莹9月3日登记参选，在场的新竹前县长范振宗朝郑丽文作势掌掴，郑丽文向后一闪，随即握住范的手，笑脸相迎。但范振宗致词时，直指国民党战略错误，战术再好也没用，在蓝营分裂、蓝白合作不顺之下，如果选不赢，“最大的战犯就是你（郑丽文）”。

范振宗事后表示，他是爱之深责之切，蓝白在新竹的合作当初究竟是怎么谈的，到底是黄国昌还是郑丽文不守信用，迄今真相不明。

民众党主席黄国昌星期二（8日）在广播节目受访，首度和盘托出两党谈判过程。他表示，自己在立委任内规划“新竹铁三角”，即前民众党籍的新竹市长高虹安寻求连任，新竹县礼让国民党，新竹县的竹北市则由民众党参选，当时国民党新竹两位立委林思铭和徐欣莹都拍胸保证没问题。

黄国昌说，今年1月民众党对新竹县长进行民调，意外发现民众党的支持者（小草） 挺执政的民进党新竹县长参选人郑朝方的比例远高于徐欣莹，立即告知徐。黄并强调，如果民众党不在竹北市推人参选，很难动员支持者出门投票。当时徐认为这样布局合理，郑丽文接任党主席后，也表达“理解，并会努力促成”。

然而，民进党6月征召原本只想争取竹北市长连任的郑朝方参选新竹县长后，国民党见有机可乘，有四人欲角逐竹北市长。黄国昌表示，徐欣莹称，四人中的吴旭智是她的人，若吴初选获胜，她比较好处理。民众党遂协助徐赢得党内初选，打败新竹县长杨文科支持的副县长陈见贤。

国民党后来决定分别由徐欣莹和吴旭智参选新竹县长和竹北市长，民众党怒责国民党违反承诺。黄国昌8月底召开记者会宣布蓝白合在新竹破局前，数度呼吁郑丽文信守承诺，要徐说到做到，但未获任何回应，“全躲起来”。

黄国昌在记者会召开前两天向郑丽文表明，此事对徐欣莹会造成重大冲击，但“对方信心满满，认为没有民众党支持，国民党仍可同时拿下新竹县和竹北市”。

蓝白原先计计划在2028年大选合作“要让总统赖清德下台”的战略布局，已因此事出现裂痕。黄国昌强调，“这件事对2028年一定会有涟漪效应”，国民党“利用完了就一脚踹开”的态度，小草（民众党支持者）完全无法接受。林思铭对此表达忧虑，预言国民党可能拿下竹北市长，却输掉新竹县长。

面对黄国昌重批国民党不守承诺、“把我当笨蛋”等指控，国民党文传会主委陈以信星期三（9日）转述郑丽文在中常会谈话，称会以最大诚意、耐心面对问题，双方应冷静一下、少说两句，凡事三思而后行。他强调“蓝白合作的大局稳健，在很多地方气氛仍非常好，两党高层沟通、互动也非常密切”。

在党中央极力低调处理此事时，杨文科却于4日地方选举登记截止后发表公开信，宣称在已有国民党提名候选人的选区，全体党员及参选同志均不得以任何形式为非国民党提名参选人站台、造势等，两党矛盾更形扩大恶化。

民众党随后举行临时扩大会议，决定新竹县各级选举参选人“不得私自与他党县长候选人合作或为其助选”，违者最重将可开除党籍。民众党秘书长周榆修表示，徐欣莹无法履行承诺，新竹县各级选举不再受两党“2026年联合治理暨地方选举合作协议”相关拘束。两党都担心此事会外溢至其他县市的合作。

彰化县的情况同样严峻。国民党中央征召律师魏平政出战县长，激化了与现任县长王惠美的矛盾。郑丽文四度南下彰化辅选、甚至请出前立法长王金平斡旋，但王惠美拒绝与郑丽文同框，始终未松口辅选，却数度与赖清德、阁揆卓荣泰同台，被赖清德公开称赞，引发基层反弹。

王惠美4日哽咽说明去年12月31日曾建议郑丽文审慎评估，但魏平政“自始至终可能都是唯一的考量人选”。王惠美强调，5月12日她致电郑丽文后，双方就未再直接联络。王惠美曾推荐新北市副市长刘和然参选，但刘和然本人明确表示无参选意愿。

文化大学国际事务与中国大陆研究所兼任教授曲兆祥，接受《联合早报》访问时指出：“关键在王惠美本身，她根本就已经绿化了。”赖清德的执政团队去年就用内阁部会首长之位向她招手，此事并非空穴来风。

王惠美被归类为王金平的人马。曲兆祥表示，当过立委和县长的王惠美，下一步的政治生命要往哪里走？那么精干的王金平若能转变彰化的局，一定会努力去做。如果王惠美真的全力帮魏平政，魏不是没有胜选机会，“但现在几乎可以断言，魏的胜选机会微乎其微了”。

曲兆祥分析，新竹、彰化是国民党传统优势地区，党中央在整合地方却完全无能为力，因为早已失去调动地方资源与指挥地方的能力。郑丽文既无威权时期的威望，也无党营事业的挹注，更无马英九时期的个人政治魅力，“就算她是巧妇吧，实难为无米之炊，把所有的问题跟责任全推给郑丽文或其团队，也未必公允”。

中华亚太菁英交流协会秘书长、中央警察大学助理教授王智盛也认为，“郑丽文固然掌握党机器跟选举游戏规则，但她无法号令动员地方派系”。

“国民党在新竹的变数不在民进党，而是陈见贤”。王智盛说，从地方结构而言，郑朝方并沒有很大的胜算，但陈见贤这个派系若“消极不配合”，徐欣莹就上不了，陈宁可让民进党胜选一届，拟于下一届重新夺回主导权。民进党过去两次赢得彰化县长的翁金珠和魏明谷，都只当一任而已。

王智盛指出，彰化的问题与新竹如出一辙，地方派系的逻辑与党中央完全不同，地方派系想的是如何长久生存经营。

2022年地方选举，国民党在22个县市大胜拿下14席。该党评估，今年很难再有突破，但现有的六个直辖市（俗称六都）应能维持现有的四比二；民进党则在现有的五席中喊出“坐七望八拼九”，不仅把彰化、新竹县和嘉义市都列为囊中物，甚至把国民党执政的新北市也视为可能攻克之地。

一般预测，国民党总席次虽可能维持表面上的多数，从14席降至约11席左右，民进党席次将从上次的五席成长至八或九席。

曲兆祥说：“新北与高雄为最核心的胜负指标；若国民党两都皆输，党主席势必面临下台危机。即使勉强留任，其领导力与控制力也将明显弱化，难以主导未来的党内提名或跨党合作；若一胜一输勉强维持局势，2028年的总统提名将由可能的候选人台中市长卢秀燕和立法院长韩国瑜等各自发挥，党中央难以发挥主导或协调作用。”
