Skydivers on plane that crashed in Missouri “didn’t have time to jump,” witness says

    June 15, 2026 1:01 PM EDT / CBS News

    By Deanna Marie Lowe

A witness to the deadly plane crash that killed 11 skydivers and the pilot over the weekend said “the plane just completely like shattered with the ground” upon impact.

The private plane went down on Sunday just after takeoff from Butler Memorial Airport in Butler, Missouri, which is about 60 miles south of Kansas City.

“It was completely perpendicular with the wings to the sky, to the ground, going fast. And then they just hit the ground,” said Bailey Reed, who saw the crash happen. “The ground and trees around it exploded and it just lit up in flames.”

Reed said the people on board the plane would not have had a chance to deploy parachutes.

“They didn’t have time to jump,” she told CBS News. “They were so low to the ground the parachutes wouldn’t have deployed and there was no way anyone could have jumped and survived that.”

Family members of the people on the plane were also there to cheer on their loved ones and saw the tragedy unfold.

“Our hearts go out to them,” said Bates County Sheriff Chad Anderson. “There’s nothing we really can say to make it better.”

    Crash investigation

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.

“Key to this investigation is going to be looking at the mechanical condition of the airplane itself, the engine,” said Robert Sumwalt, the former chair of the NTSB.

Butler is a small town and the airport there did not have a tower that was in communication with the pilot.

The NTSB will “be looking at the training of the pilot. They’ll also be looking at the FAA oversight to see if the FAA was providing adequate surveillance over this particular operation,” Sumwalt said. “Since this is a parachute operation and not a commercial operation, oftentimes the FAA doesn’t have the resources to oversee small operations like this.”

The plane was operated by Skydive Kansas City.

“This is a devastating loss for everyone connected to Skydive Kansas City and for the wider skydiving community. Our deepest sympathies are with the families, friends, and loved ones of all who were lost,” the group said in a statement. “At this time, the focus of the management and ownership team is to assist investigators and to support the staff and the broader skydiving community. The entire team is in shock, and the community is close-knit.”

Trump’s approval ticks up to 36% as price angst eases, Reuters/Ipsos poll finds

    • Summary
    • Poll spanned before and after Trump announced Iran ceasefire deal
    • Trump’s cost-of-living approval rose to 24% from 22% a week earlier
    • Registered voters favored Democratic candidates 41% to 38% if elections were held today

WASHINGTON, June 15 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump’s approval rating ticked a percentage point higher in recent days ‌to 36% as public dissatisfaction over the cost of living grew less intense, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll that closed on Monday.

The four-day poll gathered responses before and after Trump announced on Sunday that he and Iranian leaders had agreed to end a war between the two countries that had pushed gasoline prices sharply higher.

Optimism over peace talks between the two countries has pushed gasoline prices lower in recent weeks, though Americans are still paying roughly a dollar more per gallon at the pump than they were before the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran on February 28.

Some 24% of Americans currently approve of Trump’s stewardship over the cost of living, up from 22% a week earlier and 20% a month ago. The share who disapprove has eased to 69% in the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll from 73% a month earlier.

It remains to be seen if Trump’s popularity, which has suffered even among groups core to his political base such as rural voters and evangelical Christians, could be turning a corner. His overall approval rating remains near the lowest levels of his political career, ‌and people still take a harsher view of his handling of the cost of living than they did of how his Democratic predecessor in office, Joe Biden, handled the issue.

The latest Reuters/Ipsos poll, which was conducted online, gathered responses from 1,537 U.S. adults nationwide and had a margin of error of 3 percentage points in either direction.

Trump started his second term in January 2025 with a 47% approval rating – 11 percentage points higher than his current rating – after winning the prior year’s presidential election with a promise to get persistently high inflation under control.

That hasn’t happened, a recent U.S. inflation report showed, and dissatisfaction over rising prices could weigh on Trump’s Republican allies defending narrow congressional majorities in the November 3 midterm elections.

Some 41% of registered voters in the poll said they would vote for a Democratic candidate in their district if the congressional elections were held today, compared to 38% who said they would vote Republican. Another 18% said they weren’t sure or were considering a third party. Independent voters, who could be decisive in many elections, favored Democrats over Republicans by 13 points, 35% to 22%.

GOP Sen. Dan Sullivan’s same-name challenger is ineligible for ballot, official rules

Dan Sullivan, who shares a name with the current Alaskan Senator Dan Sullivan, says that he is not a fake candidate or attempting to confuse voters. A teacher from Petersburg, Alaska, Sullivan’s shared name has sparked political drama and accusations of cheating.

    AP—

A top Alaska election official has ruled that a US Senate candidate with the same name and party affiliation as Republican incumbent Dan Sullivan is ineligible to appear on the state’s primary ballot in August.

Division of Elections Director Carol Beecher, in a letter sent Monday to the challenger Sullivan, said she concluded that his declaration of candidacy “was not filed in order to declare an actual good-faith candidacy for the office of United States Senator, but was instead filed with a purpose to confuse or mislead and to thereby compromise the ballot’s fairness or neutrality.”

The challenger can appeal the ruling, she said.

A message seeking comment from Sullivan, the challenger, was not immediately returned. In a social media post Sunday, he said he “met the qualification and I entered this race because I am unhappy with the 12 year record of the current Senator and I feel we need a change. It’s that simple.”

Why the millionaire co-founder of e.l.f. Cosmetics left his beauty empire to become a Catholic priest

    June 15, 2026 / 2:25 PM EDT / CBS News

    By Grace Baek

From a massive beauty empire to Catholic Mass — Scott Vincent Borba co-founded e.l.f. Cosmetics, but found he still felt unfulfilled in his life path. Then he turned to God, leaving it all behind to become a man of the cloth.

Before heading to seminary and taking up the priestly collar, Borba enjoyed red carpets and professional acclaim for his business acumen.

“Was I created just to work and to party and to repeat and then die?” Borba recalled wondering amid his success.

Borba was raised by a deeply Catholic family in Visalia, California. He said he first felt called to join the priesthood when he was 10 years old.

“I knew God was telling me … he wanted me to be his priest. But I immediately challenged it back and said, ‘I am not that guy,’” Borba remembered. “I ran away from him for quite a long time.”

Borba moved to Los Angeles, hustling with three jobs.

One day, he was watching women load up on discounted cosmetics at a 99 Cent store when the idea for e.l.f. Cosmetics struck him: “Sephora-based quality products for a dollar.”

“It’s so humbling to understand that something that started out with such a simple concept could be so uniquely successful,” he said.

Borba turned e.l.f. (short for Eyes, Lips, Face) Cosmetics into a “lucrative business” worth many millions – but he said it still wasn’t enough to satisfy him.

“I always wanted more. It was never satisfying enough,” Borba said. “I couldn’t make enough money. I couldn’t be on enough red carpets. I couldn’t be exposed enough on TV or in magazines. It was insatiable.”

Then heartbreak arrived: Borba’s father, Anthony Borba Sr., was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Borba headed home to care for his ailing dad.

“I never saw my father scared before. He said, ‘I need to close out my life before I go. Will you help me with that?’ I said, ‘Dad. We’re going to do this together and I’m going to find you the best doctors ever.’”

In 2010, Anthony Borba Sr. died.

Borba said his life began to unravel with the loss that “broke me apart emotionally.”

He began partying more as a way to escape.

It was during one of those parties at his house in Hollywood Hills that Borba experienced his “mystical” come-to-Jesus moment.

“I remember looking around. I was so unhappy … I looked up to heaven. I remember I asked God to help me be the man he created me to be, but I couldn’t do it without his help. It changed my life,” he said. “I kicked everyone out of the house. I packed my bag and I went down to a hotel. I fell to my knees right before I walked into the door, I started crying and I said, ‘This is not the man God created me to be. This is not the man my mother and father raised.’ And that’s when this beautiful golden portal opened up and our Lord was walking in and I just knew intuitively that it was him.”

At that moment, he knew he would become a priest. Borba said he gave away his wealth, funding churches and charities. Then he entered seminary.

“I want to be there for people that are suffering because I understand suffering,” Borba said.

Borba’s family fractured after his father’s death, driven apart by decisions made by Borba in those final days — but they gathered for the first time since his death at Borba’s ordination.

“I felt so proud,” his mother, Evelyn, said.

Borba’s first public Mass took place a few weeks later.

“If you’re searching out for love and peace in your life and families and businesses out in the world, come to him. Go in peace and bring glory to your lives,” Borba shared.

Russian bishop known as Putin’s “personal priest” targeted by EU sanctions

    June 15, 2026 12:50 PM EDT / CBS/AFP

The European Union imposed sanctions on more than 80 people and entities over Moscow’s war in Ukraine Monday, including an Orthodox priest described in Russia as President Vladimir Putin’s “confessor.”

Georgiy Shevkunov, also known as Metropolitan Tikhon, a senior bishop in the Russian Orthodox Church, was targeted for “spreading Russian propaganda and disinformation” aimed at justifying the invasion of Ukraine, the bloc said in a statement.

Often referred to in Russian media as Putin’s “personal priest” and “confessor” — a claim he has neither confirmed nor denied — Shevkunov was named Metropolitan of Crimea, the Ukrainian peninsula that Russia illegally annexed in 2014, in 2023.

In February last year, Russia’s FSB security service said it had arrested two people after thwarting a Ukrainian-ordered plot to kill the prelate.

The bishop was among 34 individuals and 47 entities that EU countries added to a Russia sanctions list Monday.

“We approved another batch of sanctions to put more pressure on Russia to end the war,” said the EU’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas. “These measures strike at the heart of Russia’s military-industrial complex, its shadow fleet, and the networks that fuel Moscow’s hybrid attacks against Europe.”

Western sanctions have already cost Russia over $1 trillion, Kallas said.

“Brick by brick, we are collapsing the foundations of Russia’s war economy,” she said.

The sanctions hit individuals and organizations involved in the manufacturing and supply of drones and other military equipment to Russian forces.

Alleged Russian propagandists, including a social media influencer identified as Alexandra Jost, as well as firms and people helping Russia fund its war via the shipment and export of oil were also targeted.

So were 15 people including judges, prosecutors and law enforcement officials allegedly involved in the poisoning of murdered opposition figure Alexei Navalny.

The sanctions include asset freezes, travel bans and a prohibition to make any funds available to those blacklisted.

“Every measure shrinks Russia’s room for maneuver,” Kallas said.

The sanctions were announced on the same day that Russia fired a barrage of missiles at several major Ukrainian cities, killing at least 11 people and sparking a blaze at one of the most important Orthodox monasteries.

In response to the assault, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for more pressure on Moscow from G7 leaders who were gathering at a summit in France set to be dominated by the U.S.-Iranian deal to end the war.

Russia’s February 2022 invasion of Ukraine has turned into Europe’s worst conflict since World War II, with thousands of civilians and hundreds of thousands of troops killed.

FIRST ON FOX: Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested a Brazilian illegal immigrant, who authorities say previously served as the commander of two designated Foreign Terrorist Organizations, after allegedly attempting to flee a North Carolina traffic stop while preparing to escape to Mexico.

Felipe Linares de Oliveira Dell Aquilla, known as “Don,” was arrested June 5 in Mooresville, North Carolina, after allegedly leading law enforcement on a vehicle pursuit that ended in a crash before his arrest, according to a Department of Homeland Security press release obtained by Fox News Digital.

Federal authorities say Dell Aquilla was wanted in Brazil on charges of criminal association and extortion and had been preparing to leave the United States for Mexico.

Dell Aquilla previously served as a commander within the Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC) and Comando Vermelho (CV), two Brazil-based criminal organizations that were recently designated Foreign Terrorist Organizations by the Trump administration, according to DHS.

“This arrest demonstrates the unwavering commitment of HSI to protect our communities from dangerous international criminals,” Mark M. Zito, special agent in charge of HSI in North and South Carolina, said in an exclusive statement to Fox News Digital.

“By removing a known leader of violent foreign terrorist organizations — wanted for serious crimes including criminal association and extortion — we have prevented further harm to innocent people here and abroad,” Zito said.

Law enforcement intelligence indicated Dell Aquilla was holding his wife against her will as he plotted his escape to Mexico. Authorities said investigators later interviewed his wife, who confirmed she had been held against her will.

Investigators said Dell Aquilla led authorities on a pursuit after officers initiated a traffic stop. The chase ended when he crashed into stopped traffic and allegedly attempted to flee on foot before being taken into custody.

A search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of multiple cellphones, laptops, cash and a 9 mm handgun, according to DHS.

“Our agents, working alongside dedicated state and local law enforcement partners, acted swiftly and decisively to ensure this individual will no longer threaten the safety of our neighborhoods,” Zito said.

“HSI will continue to pursue those who endanger our communities and bring them to justice.”

Dell Aquilla was transported to a county jail and faces a state felony charge of fleeing to elude arrest. HSI is pursuing additional charges of kidnapping and being an alien in possession of a firearm, according to DHS. ICE has also lodged a detainer on him.

Dell Aquilla illegally entered the United States “at an unknown date and location,” according to federal authorities.

Florida sues TikTok, claiming it violates state child safety law

    2026-06-15 18:54:37 UTC / Reuters

June 15 (Reuters) – Florida’s attorney general sued TikTok on Monday over claims it is violating the state’s law barring social media platforms from allowing children under age 14 ‌to create accounts.

In the lawsuit, filed in state court in St. Lucie County, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, a Republican, accuses TikTok of violating the law by allowing underage users to access the platform and misrepresenting the amount of violent or sexual content young users can be exposed to.

Jumpstart your morning with the latest legal news delivered straight to your inbox from The Daily Docket newsletter. Sign up here.

“TikTok knowingly deceives parents and allows children to be exposed to harmful and inappropriate content in direct violation of Florida law,” Uthmeier said in a statement. “We have zero tolerance for companies that prioritize profit over children’s safety.”

The lawsuit seeks a court order directing the platform, which is owned by ByteDance, to make changes to bring it into compliance with the law, as well as financial damages, according to the filing.

A spokesperson for TikTok said in a statement that the company has been engaging with the attorney general and has informed users under 14 in Florida that their accounts will be suspended. The company is continuing to update its platform in Florida in response to state law, the spokesperson said.

“We are evaluating the state’s complaint and are prepared to defend our strong record on minor safety,” the spokesperson added.

TikTok is facing lawsuits from more than 25 state attorneys general across the country over claims it is designed to be addictive to young users, leading to a mental health crisis among children and teens. Most of the lawsuits have been brought under state consumer protection laws.

TikTok, Facebook and Instagram parent Meta Platforms (META.O), and other social media companies are facing thousands of lawsuits brought by ‌individuals and school districts over their impact on young users. The companies have denied the allegations and say they take extensive steps to keep teens and young users safe on their platforms.

In the first trial, in a case brought by a young woman who said she suffered from depression and anxiety after becoming addicted to the platforms at a young age, a jury in Los Angeles found Meta and Alphabet’s GOOGL.O Google negligent.

TikTok, which was also a defendant, settled with the woman before trial. The company also settled another case before trial, brought by a Kentucky school district, agreeing to pay $8 million.

The law cited in Florida’s lawsuit, known as H.B. 3, requires social media platforms to bar users under the age of 14 and requires users under 16 to get parental consent before opening an account. It took effect in January 2025.

In 2025, Florida sued Snap SNAP.N, the owner of Snapchat, accusing it of illegally employing features that addict children and opening accounts for children aged 13 and younger.

Florida called Snap’s conduct “particularly egregious” because the Santa Monica, California-based company markets Snapchat as safe for 13-year-olds, even though it can be used to view pornography and buy drugs, among other harmful activities.

The case against Snap, which said the law infringes on children’s rights under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, is ongoing, court records show.

A Florida federal judge later blocked enforcement of the law, saying it was unconstitutional. That ruling has been temporarily halted, allowing Florida to enforce it while it fights the judge’s ruling in an appeals court.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday said that the Justice Department is investigating him and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, under orders from President Donald Trump.

“After calling for my arrest last year, Donald Trump directed his Department of Justice to investigate me,” he said in a video statement. “And just in the last week, I’ve learned his campaign has reached my own home: to get me, he’s coming after my wife, Jen.”

The governor also claimed the investigation is intended to undermine any potential White House bid he may pursue in the future.

Sources familiar told Fox News that the investigation has been ongoing since 2025 and that the probe is based on whistleblower complaints related to Newsom and his wife’s personal finances. The case is being handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Sacramento.

“Donald Trump isn’t just coming after me because of my mean Tweets. He’s coming after me because I am considering running for President,” he said. “Because he hates that I’ve consistently called him out – over and over again – for his lies and deceit. Donald Trump is simply the most corrupt President in American history.”

Newsom’s wife, Jennifer, is a documentary filmmaker who runs The Representation Project, a nonprofit organization that seeks to advance feminism through media production. The charity has attracted “pay-for-play” allegations, with critics claiming that corporations with business interests in California donate to the organization to gain influence over Newsom.

″One by one, anyone who has challenged Donald Trump has ended up on his hit list,” Newsom said in a video statement. “And today, I proudly join that list.”

Since Trump took office, the DOJ has set its sights on a number of Trump’s foes. Among them are former FBI Director James Comey, former National Security Advisor John Bolton, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Sen. Adam Schiff, and former Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell.

Trump and Newsom have engaged in a number of high-profile clashes in recent years.

In November 2025, for instance, Trump nationalized the California National Guard to address anti-immigration enforcement protests in Los Angeles, prompting Newsom to sue to regain control of the forces. The two have repeatedly traded blows over issues such as crime, homelessness and environmental issues.

LOS ANGELES, June 15 (Reuters) – California Governor Gavin Newsom on Monday accused President Donald Trump of directing the Justice Department to undertake a politically motivated investigation of ‌him and his wife.

“Donald Trump isn’t just coming after me because of my mean tweets,” Newsom said in a video statement posted to X. “He’s coming after me because I am considering running for President.”

The Reuters Daily Briefing newsletter provides all the news you need to start your day. Sign up here.

The Justice Department and the White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Newsom said federal agents had in recent days been knocking on the door of members of his family, friends and former employees demanding records and digging through years-old documents.

“Not because they found a crime. Because they are simply trying to find one,” he said.

Speaking directly to Trump in the video, Newsom said: “You can subpoena my records. You can investigate me. You can harass me. Put my name on every and any enemy’s list you have, but leave my wife and family out of your personal vendetta.”

Newsom and Trump have long been critical of each other, clashing on major issues including climate change, ‌pipelines and the Republican president’s deployment of National Guard troops to the state last summer.

Last year, Trump said he would support Newsom being arrested over his alleged obstruction of immigration enforcement in California.

Since Trump returned to office for a second term, his Justice Department has targeted several of the president’s perceived political enemies with criminal prosecution, pursuing criminal charges against former FBI director James Comey, New York state Attorney General Letitia James and former National Security Adviser John Bolton.

The department has also opened investigations into U.S. officials who concluded that Russia interfered in the 2016 U.S. presidential election to boost Trump’s first campaign, Democratic lawmakers who urged U.S. military personnel to refuse unlawful orders and liberal donors and fundraising groups.

A tally by Reuters published in November 2025 revealed at least 470 people, organizations and institutions had been targeted for retribution since the beginning of Trump’s second term.
