Democratic socialist poised to lead DC after opponent concedes, setting stage for clashes with Trump

Janeese Lewis George will likely replace Mayor Muriel Bowser, who opted not to pursue a fourth term at the city’s helm

Janeese Lewis George, a democratic socialist member of the Washington, D.C. City Council described as “D.C.’s version of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani,” is set to become mayor of the nation’s capital after her opponent conceded the race Thursday morning.

In a city that leans overwhelmingly left and with no real challengers on the ballot, Lewis George will likely win November’s general election for mayor. Her main opponent was former City Council member-at-large Kenyan McDuffie, who conceded the race two days after the primary election, and five other candidates who polled very low: Rini Sampath, Gary Goodweather, Ernest Johnson, Hope Solomon and Vincent Orange.

Lewis George is poised to replace current Democrat Mayor Muriel Bowser, who on occasion worked with President Donald Trump over the last two years but ultimately opted not to pursue a fourth term at the city’s helm.

Ward 4 Councilmember Janeese Lewis George joined parents, educators, and organizers at a SPACEs In Action and Blandi’s Childcare Center rally to demand funding for the Pay Equity Fund and childcare subsidies at the Blandis Childcare Center in Washington, D.C., on March 27, 2026.(Paul Morigi/Getty Images for SPACEs in Action)

With a more adversarial approach to the current administration, Lewis George’s victory tees up a potential showdown with Trump as the president made cleaning up D.C. during his second term a main goal, maintains a deployment of the National Guard to the nation’s capital and has threatened repeatedly to end home rule for the district.

Opposing Trump’s deployment of the National Guard to D.C. was a central tenet of Lewis George’s platform on the council and during her campaign.

DSA-LINKED DC COUNCILMEMBER MOUNTS MAYORAL BID TO SUCCEED BOWSER

“Like many of you, I am shocked and outraged that President Trump has announced he is weaponizing the Home Rule Act by deploying the National Guard and exercising authority over the Metropolitan Police Department. This is a direct attack on the 700,000 residents of DC and we will not stand for it,” she said in a statement when Trump announced the move last August.

While Bowser offered cooperation with the Trump administration on the crime crackdown, which has been focused heavily on juvenile incidents, Lewis George insisted that “federal troops” and “masked ICE agents” were the real threat to the city’s youth.

MAMDANI-STYLE DC MAYORAL HOPEFUL DRAGGED OVER ‘EXACTLY BACKWARDS’ RESPONSE TO VIOLENT TEEN MOBS

“Right now, using the curfew as a tool for our young people is dangerous,” she said during a primary debate. “It is dangerous because we have federal troops who are in our city, masked ICE agents who are in our city, and these are the people enforcing this law and our young people.”

“And these are not individuals who are trained in de-escalation, they are not accountable to D.C. residents.”

“As mayor,” she continued, “I think it’s important that we use the right tools, and we don’t put the risk of our youth being harmed or killed without the real oversight that’s necessary.”

Instead, Lewis George plans to offer even more “youth programming” to keep young people out of trouble.

She has touted a plan to expand universal access to childcare in D.C., “so that no family is spending more than 7% of their income on childcare.”

As a self-described democratic socialist, Lewis George is expected to take the district even further left as Trump and Republicans call for a crackdown on left-leaning policies that they say are ruining the nation’s capital.

The candidate has supported the defund police movement and was endorsed by progressive groups like Black Lives Matter, the Working Families Party and the Metro D.C. chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America.

Trump has suggested that he’d order another federal takeover of Washington D.C. if the “crazy socialist” mayoral candidate was elected.

“I wouldn’t like it — and maybe we take back Washington, run it on the federal basis,” Trump said when asked by reporters how he’d respond if a self-described Democratic socialist D.C. council member were to win her bid.

“We won’t put up with it. We’re not going to lose our businesses,” Trump said last week during a press briefing from the White House.

    2026-06-18T14:08:56.104Z / https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-supreme-court-backs-challenge-ban-gun-ownership-by-drug-users-2026-06-18/

US Supreme Court limits ban on gun ownership by marijuana users

    2026-06-18T14:08:56.104Z / https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-supreme-court-backs-challenge-ban-gun-ownership-by-drug-users-2026-06-18/

WASHINGTON, June 18 (Reuters) – The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of a marijuana user on Thursday by limiting the application of a federal law that bars drug users from owning guns, finding that certain prosecutions under the measure intrude on the U.S. Constitution’s Second Amendment right to “keep and bear arms.”

The justices, in a 9-0 ruling, upheld a lower court’s decision to dismiss an illegal gun possession charge brought under the law at issue ‌against Ali Hemani, an American-Pakistani dual citizen and resident of Texas who told authorities he was a regular marijuana user.

Get weekly news and analysis on U.S. politics and how it matters to the world with the Reuters Politics U.S. newsletter. Sign up here.

Conservative Justice Neil Gorsuch, who authored the ruling, said the government had not “carried its conceded burden of showing its prosecution of Mr. Hemani complies with the Second Amendment.”

President Donald Trump’s administration had defended the law, though midway through the case it softened its position on barring marijuana users from owning guns.

Gorsuch said the government’s shift “leaves it awkwardly positioned to suggest that the millions of Americans who now regularly use marijuana are categorically and unusually dangerous.”

Naz Ahmad, a lawyer for Hemani, welcomed the decision.

“The court’s unanimous ruling will protect millions of Americans from draconian punishment, simply because they happen to use marijuana and own a firearm,” Ahmad said.

A 1968 federal law called the Gun Control Act makes possession of a firearm illegal for anyone who “is an unlawful user of or addicted to any controlled substance.”

    THE HUNTER BIDEN CASE

That gun restriction led to a 2024 conviction of Hunter Biden, who later that year received a pardon from his father, then-President Joe Biden. Prosecutors had accused the president’s son of lying about his use of narcotics in 2018 when he purchased a Colt Cobra handgun.

Hemani was charged in 2023 following an FBI raid of the home he shared with his parents in Denton County in which agents found a Glock 9mm pistol, marijuana and cocaine. Hemani said he used marijuana about every other day, though authorities did not accuse him of being intoxicated at the time of the search.

The Justice Department said in court papers that Hemani’s actions had drawn FBI attention, citing his travel to Iran and his brother’s attendance at an Iranian university. But Hemani’s indictment contained only the single charge under the Gun Control Act.

Illegal drugs are grouped by tiers, known as “schedules,” under another law called the U.S. Controlled Substances Act.

Marijuana had long been listed as a Schedule I substance alongside heroin, ecstasy and peyote, implying it had high potential for abuse and no medical value. But after Trump signed an executive order concerning marijuana, the Justice Department in April loosened restrictions on some marijuana products and reclassified the drug as less dangerous.

Lawyers for the Justice Department told the Supreme Court that Hemani’s marijuana should be treated as a Schedule I controlled substance, as it was at the ‌time of his illegal gun possession offense. But they suggested that the court could create a carve-out from the gun restriction for marijuana products that are approved by the Food and Drug Administration or covered by a state medical marijuana license.

Hemani moved to dismiss his charge, arguing it violated his Second Amendment rights. He also cited the stringent test the Supreme Court set in a 2022 decision requiring that gun laws be “consistent with the nation’s historical tradition of firearm regulation” in order to comport with the Second Amendment.

The New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in 2025 dismissed the illegal gun possession charge, ruling that the firearm ban cannot be applied to people unless they are under the influence of drugs while in possession of a gun.

    ‘HABITUAL USERS’

On appeal, Trump’s Justice Department urged the Supreme Court to adopt a rule that would allow illegal gun possession charges to be brought against “habitual users” of unlawful drugs. The administration said the restriction was historically similar to laws from the 1800s allowing authorities to temporarily disarm “habitual drunkards.”

“We appreciate that drugs and guns can sometimes make for a dangerous mix,” Gorsuch wrote in the decision. “We appreciate, too, that the government’s effort to analogize a modern statute addressing drug use to historical laws must be approached with a sensitivity to the fact that many drugs well known today were unknown in early America.”

Gorsuch said those drunkard laws were different from the modern federal gun law.

Lawyers for Hemani, who is backed by the ACLU, argued that regular marijuana users are not comparable to “habitual drunkards” referenced in such laws.

In a nation deeply divided over how to address persistent firearms violence including frequent mass shootings, the Supreme Court often has taken an expansive view of Second Amendment protections including in major rulings in 2008, 2010 and 2022.

The court, which has a 6-3 conservative majority, in January heard arguments in another important Second Amendment case. The court’s conservative justices signaled skepticism toward a Hawaii law that restricts the carrying of handguns on private property open to the public, like most businesses, without the owner’s permission. A ruling is expected by the end of June.

Fraudsters accused of ripping off America’s grandparents face new crackdown under GOP bill

    June 18, 2026 11:15am EDT / Fox News

The proposals require states to submit corrective action plans if payment error rates exceed 5 percent

    By Ashley J. DiMella

FIRST ON FOX:Florida Republican Sen. Ashley Moody introduced two bills that would follow the Trump administration’s crackdown on fraud, waste, and abuse to protect America’s youngest and oldest, Fox News Digital has learned.

“I’ve fought fraud since my days as Attorney General, and I’ve continued that fight as a Senator. Serving as an attorney general gave me an awareness of the pervasiveness of schemes and emboldened my determination to hold scammers accountable,” Sen. Moody told Fox News Digital. “It also opened my eyes to where gaps exist between state and federal law enforcement. I’m closing that divide, and introducing targeted legislation to address holes within current law that make it easier for bad actors to exploit vulnerable citizens and programs.”

The proposals follow a growing focus in Washington on combating fraud as the Trump administration moves to strengthen oversight of federal spending and public assistance programs. Moody’s two bills would strengthen safeguards against fraud in childcare programs and help law enforcement authorities go after scammers who prey on seniors.

The Stop Child Scams Act aims to strengthen oversight of federal childcare programs by requiring states to improve program integrity measures, submit corrective action plans if payment error rates exceed 5%, and increase federal monitoring of high-risk states.

The bill would require states to detail internal controls, fraud-investigation and recovery processes, sanctions for fraudulent clients or providers, and procedures to verify eligibility.

It also permanently bars individuals convicted of childcare fraud from participating in certain federal childcare programs.

The push comes amid heightened focus on large-scale fraud cases, including Minnesota’s $250 million “Feeding Our Future” scheme, which became a national flashpoint after surfacing in 2022 and has led to a wave of convictions in recent years.

Federal agents issued search warrants at various day care and autism centers in Minnesota last month to investigate “fake” facilities allegedly taking federal money.

Moody also introduced a second fraud bill, STOP Scams Against Seniors Act, which would help states create elder justice task forces to coordinate investigations into financial exploitation, scams and fraud targeting Americans age 60 and older.

The bill incentivizes states to go after fraudsters through federal grant money to establish task forces.

The task forces would coordinate closely with state and local police departments, the FBI, the Department of Justice, and other federal law enforcement agencies.

Trump upends Senate GOP’s plans once again with demands over nominations

    June 18, 2026 / 9:46 AM EDT / CBS News

Washington — Senate Republicans were poised to pull off a complex maneuver this week to confirm President Trump’s newest pick for director of national intelligence, a move that would have resolved an impasse over a lapsed warrantless surveillance program.

Then, the president himself threw a wrench in the plans. In an early morning Truth Social post from Europe, he said Jay Clayton’s confirmation should not move forward until the Senate approves a replacement for his current role as the top federal prosecutor in Manhattan. He also made additional demands for the reauthorization of Section 702 of FISA, which grants intelligence agencies broad authority to spy on overseas targets. Senators canceled Clayton’s confirmation hearing once it became clear he wouldn’t appear.

Why did the president do it?

“Good question,” Senate Majority Leader John Thune told reporters Wednesday.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune walks from the Senate floor to his office on Wednesday, June 17, 2026. Bill Clark/CQ-Roll Call, Inc via Getty Images

The breakdown represents the latest misalignment between the executive branch and Senate Republicans. A number of poorly timed announcements from the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue have forced Thune and his conference to squander carefully laid plans, exposing a widening rift within the party heading into the midterm elections.

The dispute over Clayton’s nomination has its origins in another decision by the president: his announcement of Bill Pulte as acting director of national intelligence earlier this month. That move single-handedly foiled an emerging deal to reauthorize Section 702, with Democrats saying they would not support doing so if Pulte was set to take over.

And last month, the Justice Department’s announcement of an “anti-weaponization” fund blew up Senate GOP plans to approve long-sought funding for immigration enforcement agencies, forcing them to delay votes. That same funding package had to be reworked days earlier to remove funds for security tied to Mr. Trump’s massive White House ballroom project.

GOP senators’ frustrations have been exacerbated by the president effectively ousting two of their own. He endorsed the primary opponents of Sens. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana and John Cornyn of Texas, leading to stinging primary defeats. Both have been more willing to criticize the administration in the weeks since.

“It’s hard to divorce anything that happens here from what’s happening in the political atmosphere around us,” Thune told reporters last month.

Senate Republicans have also been clamoring for more details this week on the U.S.-Iran agreement that was announced Sunday. GOP leaders called for a briefing, but appeared to be left largely in the dark.

The miscommunications have once again put the majority leader in a difficult position, raising questions about why the president seems intent on making his life more difficult.

“I know the president pretty well, and I think he really likes Sen. Thune,” GOP Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana told reporters Wednesday. “I mean, who doesn’t like John Thune? If you don’t like John Thune, you don’t like golden retrievers.”

Sen. John Kennedy speaks with reporters at the Capitol on March 26, 2026. J. Scott Applewhite / AP

Kennedy argued that the president simply has “two speeds: uninterested and the speed of light.”

“And on the things that are important to him, he moves at the speed of light,” Kennedy said.

The president has repeatedly been at odds with Senate GOP leadership over one issue in particular — an elections bill known as the SAVE America Act, which would impose strict new rules for registering to vote and casting ballots. Thune has repeatedly explained that the bill, which Democrats and a handful of Republicans oppose, does not have the votes to pass in the Senate. But the president has encouraged Thune to find a way to get it done, including by changing the Senate’s rules if needed.

“He wants the SAVE Act and he wants Bill Pulte, that’s clear,” Kennedy said of the president. “But that’s not the way this place works. I mean, I want a Porsche for my birthday. I’m not going to get it.”

The election legislation was part of Mr. Trump’s demands on Wednesday, when he torpedoed the Senate’s plans to move ahead with Clayton’s confirmation. “[T]o add a slight bit of intrigue but, for the Good of the Nation, and the People of our Country, I will not approve FISA without THE SAVE AMERICA ACT going along with it,” the president wrote.

Before the 11th-hour intervention, Clayton was expected to sail to confirmation as soon as Thursday, in what would have been a significant victory for Senate Republicans, who moved at a rapid clip to fast-track his nomination. Doing so would have precluded the need for Pulte to take the reins of the intelligence community, clearing the way for Democrats to support reauthorizing Section 702.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

With the president’s latest turn, and the realities of the dynamics in the upper chamber, Senate Republicans were left unclear about how to proceed. Asked Wednesday afternoon about the path forward, Thune said, “I’m not sure I know the answer to that just yet.” He told reporters that he hadn’t spoken to the president in a few days.

“This is his nominee, and so obviously he made a decision not to move forward at the moment,” Thune said. “And we’ll see what comes next.”

But for a majority leader who was uncharacteristically tight-lipped, with an agenda once again at the whims of the president, “one day at a time” was his most consistent refrain.
