Construction workers find gold stash estimated to be worth $10 million during renovations in Belgium

    August 15, 2026 / 4:14 AM EDT / CBS/AFP

Construction workers in Belgium stumbled upon a stash of gold believed to be worth more than $10 million during renovation work on a building.

Police said they were “immediately” contacted by the workers after they discovered “a large quantity of gold” while working on a building in the east Flemish town of Dendermonde. The local police department posted a picture on its Facebook page of around 50 gold bars and piles of gold coins.

Belgian news outlets reported that bars and coins worth an estimated nine million euros ($10.4 million) were found bricked into the cellar walls during the renovation of a house belonging to a local charity, CAW East-Flanders.

One worker interviewed by Belgian news outlet VRT said the crew’s “first reaction was actually disbelief, amazement.”

“We stumbled across it while carrying out groundwork to lay a pipe for the sewerage system,” said the man identified only as Kobe. “We certainly hadn’t expected to find gold.”

Police said the gold was “inventoried and secured as quickly as possible in a high-security vault belonging to the federal government services.”

Belgian police said the construction workers contacted them immediately after finding the golden haul. Lokale Politie Dendermonde/Facebook

“Apparently, several treasure hunters would like to pay another visit to the site,” read a Facebook post by the police department — which changed its profile picture to a gold coin in light of the find.

“A golden piece of advice: it is truly pointless,” they said — cautioning the curious to stay away from the fenced-off construction site.

It was not clear who was considered the legal owner of the trove — and if anyone would get to keep it.

“Let us hope that this treasure ends up in the right hands,” said the police post.

President Donald Trump scored a major legal victory Friday after a federal judge cleared the way for his administration to terminate temporary legal protections for thousands of Somali nationals living in the United States.

U.S. District Judge Allison Burroughs in Boston lifted a stay that had prevented the Department of Homeland Security from terminating Somalia’s Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation, citing a June Supreme Court ruling that sharply limited judicial review of similar administration actions.

The decision allows the Trump administration to move forward with ending TPS for Somalia, potentially exposing affected migrants who lack another lawful basis to remain in the U.S. to deportation.

Burroughs, an appointee of former President Barack Obama, had previously blocked the termination from taking effect in a lawsuit brought by four Somali nationals and two advocacy groups, including African Communities Together.

The Trump administration announced in January that it planned to terminate Somalia’s TPS designation, with then-Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem arguing that conditions in the country had improved enough to end the humanitarian protections.

The Supreme Court ruled in June in Mullin v. Doe that the TPS statute bars judicial review of certain non-constitutional decisions by the administration to terminate TPS designations. The court also found that the plaintiffs’ equal protection challenge in that case was unlikely to succeed.

The ruling curtailed lower courts’ ability to review Trump administration efforts to terminate TPS designations for nationals of multiple countries.

Plaintiffs challenging the termination of Somalia’s designation argued that the administration’s decision was motivated by bias against non-White immigrants, pointing to Trump’s previous descriptions of Somalis as “garbage” and “low IQ people.”

Following the Supreme Court’s ruling, the plaintiffs filed an amended complaint raising new constitutional claims and sought emergency relief in another effort to prevent Somalia’s TPS protections from ending.

Burroughs issued an administrative stay earlier this month after African Communities Together and other plaintiffs alleged that the administration violated the Fifth Amendment by terminating Somalia’s TPS designation based on racial and national-origin discrimination.

In Friday’s ruling, Burroughs said the plaintiffs had presented a compelling case but concluded that the Supreme Court’s decision constrained her ability to continue blocking the administration’s action.

Burroughs wrote that she was “bound … to view things through the Mullin prism,” referring to the Supreme Court case.

“Plaintiffs have made a convincing showing that they will suffer irreparable harm if the injunction is withheld … and the balance of hardships and the public interest also favor Plaintiffs, given that the government has made no showing that maintaining TPS status for the duration of this litigation would impose an undue burden,” she wrote.

Despite those findings, Burroughs lifted the stay, allowing the administration’s termination of Somalia’s TPS designation to move forward.

The Trump administration’s decision affects several thousand Somali nationals currently living in the United States.

Sources at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services previously told Fox News Digital that 2,471 Somali nationals in the U.S. currently have TPS, while another 1,383 have pending TPS applications.

    2026-08-15T10:10:44.742Z / reuters.com

Trump’s 2024 grocery photo op now haunts Republicans in the midterms

    2026-08-15T10:10:44.742Z / reuters.com

BEDMINSTER, New Jersey, Aug 15 (Reuters) – Two years after Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump staged a New Jersey press conference flanked by grocery staples to spotlight inflation under Democrats, food prices are still rising despite his pledge to bring them down. The gap between promise and reality now looms as a vulnerability for Republicans ahead of November’s midterm elections.

Standing between tables piled high with fruit, beef, cereal, milk and other household staples at his Bedminster golf club on August 15, 2024, Trump blamed the Biden administration for sharp increases in groceries. The spectacle, complete with charts showing higher prices, was aimed at undercutting the Democratic nominee, Kamala Harris, and highlighted Trump’s central promise: he alone could ‌tame inflation and lower the cost of living.

Two years on, higher gasoline and grocery prices are squeezing household budgets and turning the cost of living into the top issue for American voters. Voters now give Democrats a slight edge over Republicans in who they view as better stewards of the economy for the first time in nearly a decade, according to Reuters/Ipsos polling.

Sheila Carney, a 68-year-old Trump voter, punctuated her frustration with an expletive as she unloaded $70 worth of groceries into her car outside a supermarket not far from Trump’s Bedminster club. The haul was modest: some meat, detergent and a 12-pack of iced tea.

For Carney, the receipt was evidence that the affordability concerns Trump has sometimes dismissed as a Democratic “hoax” remain a daily burden for many Americans.

“This is real. He can say it’s not, but it is,” said Carney, a hospital administration assistant who has delayed retirement while helping pay off her son’s student loans. “He hasn’t brought anything down.”

A Reuters analysis of 26 grocery categories tracked by the Bureau of Labor Statistics and featured in Trump’s Bedminster display found prices have risen 3.4% in the first 19 months of his second term.

That’s less than a quarter of the pace recorded at the same point in former President Joe Biden’s term, but still falls short of Trump’s pledge to lower prices, as surges in coffee, beef and apples have more than offset declines in items including eggs and butter.

A White House official pointed to data on Wednesday that showed U.S. consumer prices barely increased in July from the month before as evidence that inflation is under control.

“The July CPI report is further proof that President Trump’s long-term agenda is delivering: prescription drug and auto insurance costs continue to fall, real wages are rising, and beef prices have cooled while other household essentials like eggs, poultry, and dairy remain low,” the official said.

    LACK OF ENTHUSIASM

A registered Republican, Carney said high grocery and gasoline prices due to the Iran war were among the reasons she had grown disillusioned enough to consider sitting out the midterms, underscoring recent polling suggesting Republicans are less enthusiastic about voting than Democrats.

Carney was one of 17 Republicans and independents Reuters interviewed in New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District, a battleground that includes Bedminster and where swing voters and turnout could prove decisive. The race pits Republican incumbent Tom Kean against Democrat Rebecca Bennett, who has sought to capitalize on voters’ frustration over the cost of living.

More than half of those interviewed said they were either undecided or leaning toward Bennett. While grocery prices weighed heavily on many voters, complaints about Kean more often centered on his months-long disappearance from public view earlier this year, which he later attributed to depression.

Their views on the economy mirror those of other Trump supporters Reuters has interviewed in recent months who, despite standing by the president, say financial pressures have dampened their enthusiasm for voting in November. That ambivalence presents another potential challenge for Republicans and raises the stakes for the party’s get-out-the-vote operation.

Francesco Trebbi, a public policy professor at the University of California, Berkeley, recently co-authored research finding that Trump drew stronger support in the 2024 election in counties where inflation outpaced ‌income growth, eroding households’ purchasing power.

With real wages rising only marginally and lagging the pace of broader economic growth, Trebbi said it is likely that pattern will reverse in November.

“I expect the same anti-incumbent shift to happen in 2026, this time possibly weakening Republicans,” he said, describing grocery shopping as a “psychologically salient” reminder of the squeeze on household finances. “Each time one does it, it is the equivalent of a campaign ad against the incumbent.”

    TRUMP SUPPORT

To be sure, presidents have limited influence over inflation, which is driven by a range of factors and more directly addressed by the Federal Reserve. And many Republicans appear willing to give Trump the benefit of the doubt, even as his tariffs and the Iran war have contributed to rising prices.

Bonnie Chandler, 64, plans to vote for Kean, saying she believed some companies were keeping prices elevated to make Trump look bad and that the growing influence of the Democratic Party’s progressive faction left her unwilling to consider its candidates.

“I’m going to vote Republican. I’m not a woke person. I’m not a communist. I’m not a socialist,” she said.

Lauren DeGirolamo, a 34-year-old Trump voter, said issues such as education and border security mattered more to her than grocery prices, which she believes have stabilized under Trump following steep increases during the Biden administration.

“I feel grocery prices are pretty much at level with where they were during Biden. I know some of the key things that I look for – eggs – have gone down,” she said, adding that she intended to vote for Republican candidates in November.

According to BLS data, egg prices have fallen nearly 40% under Trump, reflecting a market correction after avian flu-driven shortages triggered a surge that began during Biden’s presidency. Eggs are among six of the 26 categories showing falls since 2025, along with butter, bacon, and cooking fats and oils.

Yet most of the items Trump displayed at Bedminster are now pricier, some by a lot. Uncooked beef has jumped 19.2%, fresh fish and seafood 8.6%, apples 14%, and coffee nearly 23%.

    HITTING CLOSE TO HOME

A Reuters/Ipsos poll that concluded earlier this month found Trump’s net approval rating on his handling of the cost of living was at -47%, down from -6% at the start of his term. It is his weakest issue by a wide margin, trailing his ratings on the economy (-35%) and immigration (-16%).

Bennett told Reuters that if elected she would seek to undo Trump’s tariffs, rein in the Iran war, and restore food stamp benefits to help families struggling to afford groceries.

The issue hits close to home, said Bennett, a military veteran and married mother of two daughters. “This is not an abstract concept to me,” she said. “For example, beef is very expensive, so we don’t buy beef anymore.”

Whether Kean, whose campaign did not respond to requests for comment, can hold on to his seat may depend on voters like Margaret Derkach, who typically votes Republican but is now considering switching her vote if economic conditions don’t improve.

“The cost of living, as far as homes, apartments and food – the necessities – they have gone up. It’s shocking, shocking,” said Derkach, 84, after shopping at discount grocer Aldi.

Though she said Trump “inherited a mess” from Biden, Derkach added, “I am undecided right now. I have to see.”

Republicans worry their chances of keeping Congress are slipping away. Inside the Trump campaign plan to change that

President Donald Trump has finally given the green light to pour millions of dollars from his personal PAC toward boosting vulnerable Republicans in November, two people familiar with the plans told CNN, as some top campaign advisers privately acknowledge that Republicans’ chances of keeping control of both the House and Senate are dwindling.

Trump’s political team is still debating what the final dollar figure will be, though one person familiar with the discussions floated $30 million in the first tranche. Another official cautioned that the final amounts have not yet been decided. The long-awaited cash infusion is happening in the coming weeks, two people said, describing it as the first salvo in a stretch-run effort as November looms just three months away.

And it comes amid growing GOP concerns that severe headwinds over the Iran war and high gas prices could suppress voter turnout.

“There is a path where we keep the House and the Senate,” one source told CNN. “I’m not in a place today where I’m prepared to say we’re cautiously optimistic about that.”

Trump is also belatedly preparing to ratchet up his own campaigning schedule, with plans to travel at least once a week to hold a spate of rallies in battleground districts, one adviser said. His team first promised this move months ago, and Republicans have long argued it’s a crucial step to energizing MAGA voters critical to the party’s midterm chances.

“He loves to travel, but he hates to travel,” said one of his advisers, noting that domestic issues and the Iran war upended early plans to get him on the road more frequently. Trump has recently told his closest aides that he wants to be out more stumping for GOP candidates. But advisers acknowledge his enthusiasm could evaporate just as quickly.

“We’ll see how long that lasts,” the adviser said. “Once he’s traveling, he’s like: ‘Why am I doing this? I want to be doing other things.’”

Still, there’s widespread angst within the party that Trump has waited too long to get more directly involved. Lawmakers and operatives have privately agonized for months over the president’s reluctance to commit his vast sums to helping elect candidates across the country. The GOP is fighting to hold dozens of House districts and a handful of critical Senate seats amid voter backlash over rising prices and the deeply unpopular war in Iran — with no end in sight on either problem.

“President Trump is the unequivocal leader of the Republican party who is committed to maintaining Republicans’ majority in Congress. In just over one year, the President has made our country greater than ever before with the most secure border in American history, the largest middle-class tax cuts ever, and the lowest murder rate since 1900,” White House spokeswoman Olivia Wales said in a statement to CNN.

“President Trump will continue to draw a sharp contrast with his commonsense agenda and the radical Democrats in Congress,” she added.

An adviser close to Trump acknowledged that, with the president’s approval ratings scraping new lows, there’s little expectation he can win over large numbers of independents and swing voters — which was part of his path to victory in critical swing states in 2024. Instead, Republicans believe their fate in November rests almost solely on turning out millions of the MAGA faithful who typically don’t vote in midterm elections.

“Without a doubt, we’ve got to make sure we get some of these voters who show up for Donald Trump in presidential elections to show up for these congressionals,” the adviser said.

But in recent months, Trump and Republicans haven’t offered much to energize their base. Congressional Republicans squandered the final weeks before the August recess fighting amongst themselves over legislation — specifically the president’s controversial elections bill that would cement federal voter ID laws and install more voting restrictions, which stands little chance of becoming law and never even made it to the Senate floor.

Congressional GOP leaders have long believed that their success in the midterms will largely hang on Trump’s ability to recreate his 2024 coalition. They need Trump to help turn out as much of his MAGA base as possible in crucial battleground turf — especially in states like Michigan, Ohio and North Carolina, which have critical House and Senate races that could determine control of Congress next January.

Republicans are defending critical blue-state seats too, like the pivotal Senate seat in Maine and several House seats in both New York and California. But the vast majority of this fall’s map is in places where Trump has already proven he can win, like in Iowa and Pennsylvania.

GOP campaign officials have also been urging their candidates from the start to lean in — not away — from Trump on the trail, according to House and Senate campaign operatives. That includes even the most centrist Republicans, like Rep. Mike Lawler, who represents a vulnerable seat in New York’s Hudson Valley and welcomed Trump this spring for a joint rally in one of the reddest parts of his district.

Lawmakers also need him to stay on message, driving out big crowds and turning on his election-year charm with talk of the GOP’s accomplishments on affordability. But Trump has made little headway in selling his domestic accomplishments — or ending a monthslong foreign war that he repeatedly vowed would only last four to six weeks.

In private conversations with Trump, some advisers have sought to emphasize how significantly the war is dragging down Republicans’ chances, arguing that even voters who generally support his goals in Iran are unwilling to stomach a drawn-out conflict that’s raising prices at home.

The prospect of persistently high gas prices has particularly damaged Trump’s standing, people familiar with the internal discussions said, serving as a prominent visual reminder of an affordability crisis that many Americans feel has gotten worse under this administration.

“It’s higher prices; that’s what they’re upset about,” said one of the advisers.

Perhaps reacting to those pressures, both Vice President JD Vance and departing White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt this week started emphasizing that lowering gas prices was equally as or more important to Trump than keeping Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. That’s a shift from Trump’s frequent assertions that Tehran’s nuclear capabilities are all that matters.

“I think both goals are equally as important to the president: We want to keep gas prices low but also ensuring Iran can never get a nuclear weapon. Something he will see through no matter what,” Leavitt told reporters traveling on Air Force One Friday.

Trump has nevertheless insisted publicly that he’s willing to prolong the war for as long as it takes to win it, downplaying the domestic impact even as he struggles to find a clear path toward achieving his aims in the Middle East.

Amid that worsening backdrop, Trump has repeatedly suggested recently that the midterms aren’t really his problem. And in addition to waving off Americans’ economic anxieties and declining to prioritize bringing an end to the Iran war, he’s also emphasized his own pet projects over the broader GOP agenda.

“I don’t have to be supporting all the people. You know, I have a busy schedule,” Trump said in an interview with Punchbowl News last week, adding: “I said to somebody, ‘I won. I’m not campaigning.’”

Those closest to the president insist he still cares deeply about ensuring Republicans win as many races in November as possible. But, one adviser cautioned, he won’t get involved in races he thinks aren’t winnable.

“He doesn’t want to carry dead carcasses across the finish line,” that person said, referencing Trump being incredibly protective of who he chooses to endorse. “He’s not going to endorse a loser and ruin his brand.”

But he does acutely understand that Democrats winning either the House or the Senate in November would have a highly negative impact on his final two years in office, they said.

“The next two years will be f*cking horrible if we lose both chambers. And Trump knows that,” that source said. Other officials have emphasized that Trump does not want to go through the same type of investigations and battles with Congress that he did during his first term, which included two impeachment trials.

The political operation surrounding the president consists of a tight group of loyal advisers who worked on Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign and other previous campaigns. It’s run by his former political guru, James Blair, who up until recently served as the White House deputy chief of staff for legislative, political and public affairs.

Other high-ranking members of the team include: Chris LaCivita, a co-campagin manager of Trump’s 2024 reelection campaign; Taylor Budowich, who previously ran MAGA Inc. and later led White House communications; Timothy Saylor, who previously helmed Trump’s 2024 data operations; and Tony Fabrizio, the president’s longtime pollster.

White House chief of staff Susie Wiles, who worked alongside LaCivita and the others throughout Trump general election campaign, continues to be heavily involved in all strategy ahead of November, the officials said.

There was a bit of a shakeup this week when Leavitt announced she’s departing her role as press secretary at the end of August, just two months before the midterms. Leavitt has long been viewed inside the West Wing as one of the president’s most effective messengers on the upcoming elections. As of Saturday morning, it was unclear when the role would be replaced.

Those on the team have described their strategy as being guided by the same principles they used to take them across the finish line in 2024. The most crucial aspect, they said, is their data operation. The president’s chief of staff will often remark to the group that everything must be driven by the extensive data they have amassed in recent years and used to energize members of Trump’s base.

“We know exactly who our voters are,” one of the president’s political operatives said. “Based on the data operation, we know how to reach them, and we know what it takes to get them off their ass.”

Trump’s advisers also cite a number of recent political wins they argue should help come November, including Republicans’ unprecedented effort to redraw congressional districts across several states, shifting a handful of seats toward the GOP and further limiting the number of races that are realistically up for grabs. That redistricting push — spurred directly by Trump — is a key reason that Republicans believe they still have a chance to keep the House.

Republicans claimed another victory after the Supreme Court struck down restrictions on the amount that official campaign committees can spend on individual candidates — a change that party operatives insist will help even up the financial arms race given the GOP has far more money than Democrats in PACs and outside groups.

“Our money’s going to go so much further,” one Republican campaign official said following the ruling. “We’re not going out there and saying we’re going to win a gazillion seats … but we feel like we’re probably in the best possible position we’ve been in.”
