WASHINGTON, July 15 (Reuters) – Brett Matsumoto, President Donald Trump’s pick to head the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, moved a step closer on Wednesday to running the agency charged with producing key economic data, including on the labor market and inflation.

The ‌U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee voted 12-11 along party lines to advance Matsumoto’s nomination to the full Republican-controlled Senate. The committee also approved the nomination of James Macy to be a member of the National Labor Relations Board, also on a party-line 12-11 vote, and the nomination of David Prouty for a second term as a member of the NLRB by a vote of 17-6. No date has been set for the final votes on the Senate floor.

The Federal Reserve, economists, investors, and the public rely on BLS data to gauge the health of the labor market, the extent of price pressures, and other critical aspects of the $32 trillion U.S. economy.

During a confirmation hearing in June, Matsumoto told the panel that he did not believe BLS data had been fabricated or rigged. Trump had removed the previous BLS commissioner, Erika McEntarfer, for issuing what he called “fake” ‌job numbers.

Matsumoto, an economist who has worked at the BLS since 2015 but is on leave from the economic data agency to work at the White House’s Council of Economic Advisers, also said he has faith in the work performed by the career staff who collect and process the data and would ensure that their output is what is published by the agency.

He said he would work to address technical issues that have undercut the quality of BLS data in recent years but did not echo Trump’s unfounded assertions that agency output was being manipulated for political purposes.

Trump fired McEntarfer, an appointee of former President Joe Biden, last August following the release of a monthly employment report that included historically large revisions to previously reported figures on job creation.

The president initially picked conservative economist E.J. Antoni to head the agency but later withdrew the nomination.

    https://news-multimedia-1393112320.cos.ap-guangzhou.myqcloud.com/clear.gif

Trump’s ‘third world’ travel ban could become permanent if firebrand Republican lawmaker gets her way

FIRST ON FOX: One House Republican is moving forward with efforts to codify President Donald Trump’s sweeping travel ban on “third-world” countries.

Rep. Nancy Mace, R.S.C., will introduce legislation Wednesday that would bar people from 39 countries across the Caribbean, Middle East and Africa from entering the United States, Fox News Digital has learned.

Mace’s bill, titled the Third World Immigration Moratorium Act, would also block entry for individuals traveling on Palestinian Authority-issued documents.

The South Carolina lawmaker argued her legislation, which mirrors the list of countries facing full or partial bans under the Trump administration, is necessary because many immigrants from the affected countries have failed to assimilate into American life.

TRUMP ADMIN ANNOUNCES EXPANSION OF VISA RESTRICTION POLICY IN WESTERN HEMISPHERE

“For too long, Washington has looked the other way while bad actors exploited every gap in our system and American families paid the price. Those days are over,” Mace said in a statement obtained by Fox News Digital on her upcoming legislation. “If you import the third world, you will become the third world.”

“This bill makes crystal clear: entry into the United States is a privilege, not a right,” she continued. “We make absolutely no apologies for defending it.”

Countries that would face travel restrictions include Afghanistan, Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burma, Burundi, Chad, Cote d’Ivoire, Cuba, Dominica, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Gabon, Gambia, Haiti, Iran, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Republic of the Congo, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, Togo, Tonga, Turkmenistan, Venezuela, Yemen, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The proposal comes after the Trump administration resurrected a travel ban on 12 countries in June 2025 after an Egyptian national was charged with carrying out a deadly firebombing attack in Boulder, Colo., on demonstrators calling for the release of hostages in Gaza.

Trump later moved to expand the list by more than double after an Afghan national fatally shot 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom, a member of the West Virginia National Guard, and severely injured U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe in Washington, D.C., 25, in November.

    https://news-multimedia-1393112320.cos.ap-guangzhou.myqcloud.com/clear.gif

The president argued the move was necessary to protect national security and guard against visa overstays after both perpetrators were in the country illegally after overstaying their visas.

Many of the countries on the travel ban list are among the poorest in the world and have struggled with instability and terrorism.

Iran and Cuba — both longtime U.S. adversaries — are also among the countries targeted by the proposal.

Mace’s legislation would exempt several categories of travelers, including lawful permanent residents, dual nationals using passports from countries not subject to the restrictions, diplomats, NATO personnel, athletes participating in major international competitions, special immigrant visa recipients who assisted U.S. forces and some people fleeing ethnic or religious persecution in Iran.

Under Mace’s bill, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) secretary would possess the authority to grant case-by-case waivers if admitting an individual is determined to be in the nation’s “critical interest.”

But the legislation is likely to face an uphill battle in the House amid expected opposition from Democrats and some Republicans who support legal immigration from several of the countries on her list.

    https://news-multimedia-1393112320.cos.ap-guangzhou.myqcloud.com/clear.gif

Earlier this year, a handful of Republicans joined Democrats in voting to extend Temporary Protected Status for Haitians despite the Trump administration’s opposition. Some Republicans have also defended legal immigration for people from Cuba, Venezuela and other countries subject to the travel ban and often used as proxies of other foreign powers.

Mace previously introduced legislation that would bar naturalized citizens from serving in most of the federal government, including in Congress and as federal judges.

Wednesday’s legislation comes as Mace weighs her political future.

Why is Zelenskyy overhauling Ukraine’s government amid battlefield successes against Russia?

    2026-07-15 10:37:00-0400 / CBS News

    Updated on: July 15, 2026 / 10:39 AM EDT / CBS News

Kyiv — Ukraine’s Parliament accepted Yulia Svyrydenko’s resignation as prime minister on Tuesday following President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s decision to overhaul the country’s top leadership. The move has surprised many observers who credit the outgoing cabinet with Ukraine’s recent successes in countering Russia’s ongoing full-scale invasion.

Zelenskyy says the changes are aimed at preparing Ukraine for another difficult winter and strengthening relations with key foreign partners. But officials and lawmakers say the reshuffle also reflects broader political calculations inside Kyiv.

“Ukraine is changing its political strategy. Each priority area of foreign policy will be assigned to a specific person with substantial experience who is capable of implementing what we agree on at the leaders’ level and what the Ukrainian people expect,” Zelenskyy wrote on X. “The same applies to our domestic work … Preparing for winter is an extremely important priority, and Ukraine must be ready for every threat that may arise.”

The initial changes have indicated he’s serious about both priorities. Last winter was Ukraine’s harshest since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022. As Russia hammered the country’s energy grid, cities endured weeks-long power and heating outages. Officials have warned that the government has not taken the steps necessary to prevent the same thing from happening this winter.

“The reason was the Svyrydenko cabinet’s failure to prepare adequately for the winter,” Oleg Dunda, a member of Ukraine’s parliament, told CBS News. “As far as I know, the implementation of the resilience plans was unsatisfactory. And so the question arose: Either try to strengthen this area in time, or let this cabinet take full responsibility.”

Svyrydenko’s likely replacement as prime minister, Serhiy Koretskyi, the CEO of Ukraine’s state energy giant Navtozgaz, may be well-positioned to address the shortcomings.

“He is a real technocrat,” Yuriy Sak, an adviser to Ukraine’s Ministry of Strategic Industries, told CBS News. “The winter is coming, and there is a need to strengthen the energy sector and efficiency.”

Zelenskyy is expected to make Svyrydenko Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United States. Officials say she has close relationships with members of the Trump administration, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, dating back to their work on the critical minerals deal last year.

Ukraine’s current ambassador in Washington, Olha Stefanishyna, submitted her resignation this week.

But while some personnel shifts do track clearly with stated Ukrainian government priorities, others have confounded lawmakers and officials. Rumors that Zelenskyy could replace popular Minister of Defense Mikhailo Fedorov with current Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko have drawn considerable pushback.

Fedorov, a 35-year-old tech entrepreneur with close ties to Silicon Valley, became the defense chief in January after spearheading technological reforms at Ukraine’s Ministry of Digital Transformation. He is widely credited with Ukraine’s recent battlefield successes, including a campaign to cut off fuel and logistics flows to Crimea, the southern Ukrainian peninsula occupied by Russia since 2014.

Several officials told CBS News that Fedorov’s growing popularity has led some in Kyiv to view him as a potential political rival to Zelenskyy, and the Economist reported this week that there had been friction between Fedorov and some of Ukraine’s top generals, including the commander of the armed forces Oleksandr Syrskyi.

A spokesman for Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense said the observations in the Economist article were gathered before Zelenskyy announced the reshuffle of his government, and they would not offer any further comment.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Zelenskyy had announced no decision on any further moves in his shake-up, but he held meetings with Koretskiy, the likely new prime minister, as well as acting Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, Minister of Internal Affairs Klymenko, and Fedorov.

“The transformation of all processes within Ukraine’s Defense Forces that can sustain the motivation of our warriors must also continue, along with efforts to ensure that combat brigades are properly staffed. We all understand the challenges,” Zelenskyy wrote on X following his meeting with Fedorov. “It is important that the necessary leadership in the defense sector delivers results.”

World Cup England vs. Argentina semifinal reignites painful historic rivalry tinged by war and cheating

    July 15, 2026 / 8:23 AM EDT / CBS News

London — The semifinal clash between England and Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup will see two bitter rivals face off in what is widely expected to be one of the most emotionally charged matches of the tournament.

The contest will see Lionel Messi, considered by many to be one of the best soccer players in the world, play against England for the first time in his long and storied career. He will face England’s all-time top goal scorer Harry Kane, and one of the stars of the tournament, Jude Bellingham.

Previous matches between the two countries have produced some of the sport’s most iconic moments. But this rivalry goes well beyond the soccer field.

    The Falklands War

Diplomatic relations between England and Argentina remain strained to this day over two small islands off Argentina’s Atlantic coast. To the U.K., they are the Falklands, but Argentina calls them the Malvinas.

In the 18th century, France, Spain and Britain all tried to lay claim to the islands, establishing early colonial settlements. France agreed to leave the islands in 1766, leaving Spanish settlers to force out the British, who withdrew in 1774.

The Spanish then left in the early 19th century, leaving a newly independent government in Buenos Aires to claim the islands 300 miles off the country’s coast as Argentina’s own.

The sovereignty dispute reignited in 1833, however, when British forces arrived to reclaim the islands, expelling the Argentinian population and replacing it with Britons.

In 1982, an Argentinian military junta launched an attack on the islands and quickly captured the territory, sparking a 10-week war that killed 907 people, more than a third of whom were Argentinian sailors on the ARA General Belgrano cruiser that was sunk by a British submarine in a highly controversial attack.

Facing superior military force, Argentina surrendered the islands, which remain dominated more than three decades later by a British population.

Las Malvinas remain a bitter point of contention for the South American nation.

    “The Hand of God”

Only four years after the conflict, Argentina and England faced off in a World Cup quarter final in Mexico City’s gargantuan Azteca Stadium, which was packed with 114,000 people.

Early in the second half, the ball looped fortuitously to Diego Maradona, one of the sport’s greatest players of all time, who leapt into the air and hit the ball with his fist into the back of the net.

The referee didn’t register the hand contact, and the goal stood.

“A few minutes later, Maradona then scored possibly the greatest goal in the history of the World Cup,” soccer journalist Joey D’urso told CBS News. It sealed Argentina’s fate — the match finished 2-1.

Asked afterward if he had scored his first goal legally, Maradona replied that it was, “a little with the head of Maradona, and a little with the hand of God.”

In a 2019 documentary, he described it as “like some sort of symbolic revenge against the English” for their invasion of the Malvinas.

A year later, on the occasion of his 60th birthday, he told France Football magazine: “I dream to score another goal against the English, this time with the right hand.”

In 1998, Argentina beat England on penalty shots in a game that saw David Beckham red carded and which then-England captain Alan Shearer said on Wednesday “still hurts now.”

In 2002, Beckham scored a penalty to help England beat Argentina 1-0 in a World Cup group match — the two teams’ last competitive fixture.

    “For Malvinas, for Diego”

The Wednesday night rematch in Atlanta will determine who plays Spain on Sunday for World Cup glory. But the historical significance of the game is inescapable.

After beating Switzerland 3-1 on Saturday, Messi — who is often compared to Maradona — and his teammates sang The Fourth Star, the country’s alternative World Cup anthem.

“For Malvinas, for Diego,” they chanted.

Gary Linekar, who scored England’s consolation goal in the 1986 game and is now a well-known soccer commentator in the U.K., said Tuesday that he wants “revenge this time round” for the loss.

Ahead of Wednesday’s clash, Argentina’s coach Lionel Scaloni has tried to play down the historical significance.

“It is a football game and that is all,” he said.

But Argentina forward Jose Lopez has promised that he and his teammates will “leave our lives on the field.”

“Obviously, inside and outside the four lines of the pitch it’s a match that has a lot of history there, a lot of pain and a lot of things behind it,” he said.

England coach Thomas Tuchel said in the run-up to the game that Argentina’s players, “are fueled by history, it means a lot to them … But we are also emotional. We have the grit. We have the mentality that it takes to go up against it, and we are ready for it.”

“Argentina versus England has become a classic,” Víctor Hugo Morales, a Uruguayan journalist whose commentary on the 1986 match has been immortalized in Argentina, told The Guardian recently. “Before 1986, it was just another match. Since then, it has carried a political and emotional weight that goes far beyond football.”

EXCLUSIVE: The Trump administration is laying out its clearest blueprint yet for what comes after decades of traditional U.S. foreign aid, arguing that private investment, trade and American business — not taxpayer-funded assistance — should become America’s primary engine for development abroad.

At a U.S. Mission to the United Nations “Trade Over Aid” forum in New York Monday, Ambassador Mike Waltz, the U.S. permanent representative to the United Nations, told Fox News Digital in an exclusive interview that the administration is “completely reforming how we do aid” by moving away from taxpayer-funded programs and toward private-sector-led development.

“For too many years, the United States and other countries have poured billions and billions of dollars into these aid programs and got very little in return,” Waltz said. “You go to these forums at the United Nations and at development agencies around the world, and you never find the private sector. You find NGOs and academics and governments, but you don’t find the creators of growth and the creators of jobs.”

Waltz said the new model is designed to “create jobs, to create business for American companies in line with America First,” while also raising living standards abroad and reducing instability that can fuel terrorism and poverty.

The administration moved to dismantle USAID in 2025, arguing the agency was inefficient and too often disconnected from U.S. foreign policy. Asked directly whether “Trade Over Aid” is replacing USAID, Waltz said USAID’s functions had been folded into the State Department as part of a broader efficiency effort, but insisted the initiative is about something larger than one agency.

“What we’re doing, this isn’t about USAID or what replaces it,” Waltz said. “That was an efficient effort to get our aid to serve our foreign policy, not the other way around. But what I think is more important is how do we help American businesses and how do (we) help create jobs around the world and reduce dependency.”

The stakes are immediate: with USAID reorganized under the State Department and aid budgets under pressure, the Trump administration is trying to show that it has a replacement model for how the U.S. helps poorer and fragile countries. The answer it is pitching is not more traditional aid, but more private capital, more trade, more deals for American companies and fewer open-ended taxpayer commitments.

The forum brought together representatives from dozens of countries, U.N. agencies, international financial institutions and major private-sector players, including Microsoft, Google, JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Boeing, Walmart, Mastercard, Meta and others.

Czech Environment Minister Igor Cerveny, who attended the forum, said the idea resonated with his country’s own post-communist experience.

After communism, he said, the Czech Republic had to rebuild through work, business, industry and innovation rather than dependency.

Ambassador Dan Negrea addresses the U.S. Mission to the United Nations’ “Trade Over Aid” forum in New York, July 13, 2026.(Donald Conahan/ U.S. mission to the U.N.)

“If you work on your economy, on your industry, on your society, on nature as well, probably two, three, five years later, (you will) be in a better position,” Cerveny told Fox News Digital. “You have your own money. You are not now the slave of (asking). You are now the master of your destiny.”

Cerveny said trade gives countries an “opportunity to cooperate” rather than forcing them to return again and again with the same request: “Please give me some money.”

Ambassador Dan Negrea, who is spearheading the initiative in the U.S. Mission, told Fox News Digital that shrinking aid budgets around the world make a new model necessary.

“We need to think differently about how we help developing countries in an environment in which, in the United States, we are indebted and we cannot continue to spend money on helping other countries the way we used to,” Negrea said. “Development aid is going down not only in the U.S., but in countries around the world.”

Negrea said the initiative has received less resistance from developing countries than from traditional donor nations.

“Interestingly, there is less pushback from countries receiving aid than from some donor countries that like to continue in this attitude of charity, being magnanimous to other countries,” he told Fox News Digital. “For years and years and for decades, many developing countries are saying that they want to end this status of recipient of charity and move to a much more dignified relationship of partners and development.”

But some leaders from developing countries also warn that trade cannot replace aid overnight, especially in emergency settings. The Democratic Republic of Congo’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Francophonie, Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner, told Fox News Digital that aid remains critical in crises such as the Ebola outbreak in eastern DRC.

“Aid sometimes can transform dramatically a situation,” she said. “This is not something you can change overnight with trade. But yes, over a long term, trade is the pathway to create greater growth, greater economic prosperity, and therefore also more equal relationships between countries.”

Kayikwamba Wagner added that the shift must be “adapted to circumstances” and not be “too abrupt.”

The initiative already has drawn 46 countries, and launched a digital library with 63 capacity-building offers from private companies, governments, NGOs, philanthropies, academic institutions and international organizations.

But when pressed on what those offers have produced so far, Negrea acknowledged the initiative is still in its early stages. The library was inaugurated last week, he said, and the goal now is to turn offers into concrete outcomes.

“We want to see more deliverables,” Negrea said. “We want to see actual transactions that were done. We want to see countries using the digital library to see usable capacity building offers coming from around the world. So we want to help without the cost to the U.S. taxpayers, but at the same time creating opportunities for American companies.”

    https://news-multimedia-1393112320.cos.ap-guangzhou.myqcloud.com/clear.gif

The central challenge facing the effort is whether private capital will go where aid has traditionally been most needed: fragile countries with weak institutions, unreliable infrastructure, corruption, conflict or markets too risky for major investors.

WALTZ CALLS U.N. A ‘CESSPOOL FOR ANTISEMITISM’ AS TRUMP ADMINISTRATION PUSHES MAJOR REFORMS

Waltz argued that is exactly where institutions such as the U.N. Development Program, the World Bank and the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation can play a role.

“When we talk to organizations like J.P. Morgan, Goldman Sachs and others, they’re saying, we want to invest hundreds of millions into these industries abroad, but they need better laws, they need better arbitration,” Waltz said. “We need to know that we can get our money out for our investors here in the United States.”

He said the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) and U.S. contributions to the World Bank can provide “risk insurance and guarantees” for investments in riskier markets, including critical minerals projects needed by the U.S. technology sector.

“It is incredibly risky,” Waltz said. “Sometimes these capital providers like on Wall Street and in New York are only going to go to the safest place. Sometimes it makes sense, for example, as we’re looking for critical minerals for our tech industry, to go into risky places, but they need a little help.”

The strongest note of caution came not from critics outside the room, but from inside the forum itself.

Alexander De Croo, the former Belgian prime minister who now leads United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), said trade and aid should not be treated as enemies.

“Trade is a destination, but development is how we get to that destination,” De Croo said. “Markets do not build themselves. They have to be built.”

De Croo said investment flows when rules are predictable, institutions are trusted and workers have the skills to seize opportunity. He described UNDP’s role as helping countries build those foundations. “There is no country over the past decades that has successfully developed without a strong private sector and without trade being a big part of that,” he said.

Christopher Sharrock, Microsoft’s vice president for United Nations and international organizations, also warned that aid still has a role that markets cannot fully replace.

“Aid does do an essential job and it does a job that possibly nothing else can do,” Sharrock said, pointing to vaccination campaigns, famine response and natural disasters as areas where assistance remains critical.

For the Trump administration, “Trade Over Aid” is being pitched as a more disciplined, America First answer to development: fewer handouts, more deals, less dependency, more jobs for American companies and foreign partners alike.

But the test will be whether it can deliver not only in countries already ready for investment, but in the hardest places — the places where aid has long filled the gap because markets would not.

Rep. Haley Stevens leads by nearly seven percentage points over Abdul El-Sayed in the Democratic Senate primary in Michigan, a key test between the party’s establishment and progressive wings, according to a Detroit News/WDIV-TV poll released Tuesday.

The poll, conducted last week, showed 48 percent of voters supporting Stevens compared with 41 percent for El-Sayed. Stevens had a particular lead with Black, non-college-educated and Detroit-area voters. El-Sayed had the advantage with college-educated and White voters, especially those who consider themselves democratic socialists.

The poll was released one week after the two candidates partook in their first one-on-one debate. The candidates previously debated with state Sen. Mallory McMorrow, who dropped out of the race earlier this month. She has not endorsed either candidate.

Stevens is a four-term congresswoman who flipped a competitive House seat in 2018. She has the backing of several major Democratic figures in Michigan, and more than $49 million in outside spending on her behalf, much of it from a group related to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.

El-Sayed has the backing of the party’s progressive wing and is deeply critical of Stevens’s support for the U.S.-Israel relationship.

The Michigan Senate race will be crucial for determining who controls the Senate next year.
