Trump says Iran war will end after the midterms and gas prices will fall

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he expects Iran will abandon its war effort after the US midterm elections – and he conceded American gas prices are unlikely to fall before then.

Speaking to reporters on his way to the GOP midterm convention in Dallas, Trump asserted that Iran would continue the war into November in an effort to damage him politically.

“I think it’s going to take a little bit longer than the midterm,” Trump said of gas prices coming down. “They’re desperate to try and affect the election so that we can get a nice weak group of people in there and leave them alone and let them have their nuclear weapon.”

But he added that he believes Iran is near collapse and that it would seek an end to the conflict “immediately after the election,” prompting oil prices to tumble downward.

“They can’t hold out any longer,” he said.

Trump’s remarks come as the global benchmark oil price has topped $100 a barrel once again, driven by stepped-up fighting in Iran in recent days that has further jeopardized the flow of crude through the Strait of Hormuz.

The surge in oil prices is likely to further increase fuel costs in the US, which have emerged as a key economic pain point ahead of the midterms.

Trump has repeatedly insisted that oil prices will fall precipitously once the war is over, dismissing concerns about the political impact by insisting that Americans are supportive of the broader offensive against Iran.

“I think it’s very easy to explain to America, all you have to do is say: ‘Will you let Iran have a nuclear weapon?’ And the answer is no,” Trump said.

Trump’s Texas trip delayed after emergency slide deploys on new Air Force One on tarmac

Washington — President Trump’s departure to Texas on Wednesday was delayed after an inflatable emergency slide on the new Qatar-gifted Air Force One deployed on the tarmac before he boarded, prompting workers to eventually remove it.

The president was headed to Dallas for the RNC’s Midterm Convention. He was waiting to disembark from Marine One to board Air Force One at Joint Base Andrews when reporters spotted the slide had inflated and reached the ground. The old Air Force One soon arrived as a backup.

Mr. Trump approached reporters and said workers were examining the slide, claiming nothing was wrong with the safety feature.

“So they’re checking the slide over here,” Mr. Trump told reporters. “They were doing a check on the slide, you know?”

Asked if there was a security concern with the plane, the president responded, “No, they were checking it before. And they just wanted to make sure. So they’ve, I guess they’ve already put it up. They want to make sure everything works perfectly.”

The slide was eventually deflated and hauled away by workers, and the plane took off without incident.

The new Air Force One has been in and out of service since the president unveiled it earlier this summer. The president secretly used the old plane to leave Turkey after a summit in July after a credible missile threat, then took the new jet home from the U.K. The White House said soon after that the president would continue using the old Air Force One while the newer luxury jet underwent additional security enhancements.

Mr. Trump is planning to take the new jet on an overseas trip to Ireland later this month.

James Talarico says Ken Paxton is “lying to the people of Texas” with AI ad that puts “words in my mouth”

Texas State Rep. James Talarico, the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate, said Wednesday his opponent, state Attorney General Ken Paxton, is “lying to the people of Texas” with a new AI advertisement that Talarico said puts “words in my mouth.”

“When you look at this ad, they are using AI in order to mislead the people of this state, and that is completely consistent with a liar like Ken Paxton,” Talarico told CBS News’ Ed O’Keefe in an interview Wednesday.

Paxton released the advertisement this week, which portrays an AI-generated Talarico reading a “King James Talarico” bible aloud, with references to comments he’s made about God being nonbinary, gender and more broadly, Christianity.

Pressed by O’Keefe on whether the ad represented statements Talarico has previously made, Talarico replied, “Not all of those statements.” He argued that Paxton’s ad is in line with his “record of lying to the people of Texas,” pointing to Paxton’s impeachment. The Texas attorney general was impeached by the state House in 2023 on accusations of bribery, obstruction of justice and abuse of the public trust. Talarico also cited a recent endorsement he received from Paxton’s former director of law enforcement, who appeared in a new ad this week supporting Talarico.

“I am confident that Democrats, independents and Republicans are going to reject Ken Paxton because we don’t want a criminal representing us in the halls of power in Washington,” Talarico said.

The Democrat said he would not use AI in political advertising, adding that “every ad that we put out is made by human beings, and we’re very proud of that fact.”

The comments come as Talarico and Paxton are facing off in November in a closely watched Senate contest that’s expected to be among the most expensive in history. In May, Paxton won the Senate primary runoff for the GOP nomination, defeating incumbent Sen. John Cornyn, who’s represented Texas in the Senate since 2002. Democrats hope that Talarico will benefit from Paxton’s candidacy, given his history of personal controversies and more conservative ideology than Cornyn.

On Wednesday, Talarico argued,”Texans are tired of this professional wrestling in our politics,” and he said they “want a serious senator who’s going to bring both parties together to lower costs and get this economy back on track.”

“I have a track record of doing that,” he said, citing his work in the state legislature. “So I’m asking Texans to judge me based on my legislative record.”

Appearing at a grocery drive Wednesday, Talarico drew a contrast between the food drive aimed at helping struggling Texans and what he called the GOP “billionaire ball,” as Republicans and their donors gather in Dallas for their midterm convention Wednesday and Thursday. The Democratic candidate highlighted Texans’ need for affordability, saying, “I don’t want to wait until the day after the election, or the day I’m sworn in, to give Texas some relief.”

“Our campaign is all about serving others, loving thy neighbor,” he said. “The other side is all about self-enrichment and accumulating wealth and power for themselves at the expense of working people.”

Democrats are hopeful that Talarico, a Presbyterian seminarian who calls himself a progressive Christian, can break a decades-long streak of sending Republicans to the Senate. Texas hasn’t elected a Democrat to the Senate since 1988, and Democrats have fallen short in multiple contests despite optimism about their chances.

The race could also be key to determining control of the Senate. With 53 Republicans, Democrats would need to flip four seats to take the majority, and Democrats are hoping the Lone Star State is one of them. The nonpartisan Cook Political Report shifted its rating of the race from likely Republican to leaning Republican after Paxton’s victory in the primary, and then in August, from leaning Republican to a toss-up.

Asked what sets this race apart from the 2018 race between GOP Sen. Ted Cruz and Democrat Beto O’Rourke, Talarico replied, “This is truly a movement unlike any other that we’ve seen in the state of Texas,” citing interest at events, volunteer participation and grassroots fundraising totals.

“People are hungry for the old-fashioned values I was raised with: honesty, integrity, service, putting others before self, doing the right thing, even when no one is watching,” Talarico said. “I know those values have been out of style recently over the past 10 years. But I really do believe those old-fashioned values are about to make a comeback in this race.”

Appeals court considers future of nationwide access to medication abortion

The issue of medication abortion was back before a New Orleans-based appeals court on Wednesday, in the latest iteration of a yearslong legal effort to end the provision of abortion drugs via telehealth.

Medication abortion now accounts for two-thirds of US abortions, which overall have increased since the 2022 Supreme Court decision that ended abortion rights protections nationwide. The latest case was brought against the Trump administration by Louisiana, which has argued its abortion prohibitions are being undermined by federal regulations that allow mifepristone to be sent to patients in the mail, without an in-person doctor’s visit.

Over roughly 100 minutes of arguments, the 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals wrestled with whether it could interfere with the US government’s regulatory approach to the abortion pill. The Justice Department has tried to head off the lawsuit by raising procedural issues with the case while refusing to endorse the safety of the drug.

The appeals court did not indicate how it intended to rule on Louisiana’s case; however it rules, it is expected that the Supreme Court will have the final word on the matter.

The high court issued an emergency order in May keeping the current rules allowing telehealth abortions in place for this current round of legal wrangling. Much of Wednesday’s hearing centered on what the appeals court could even do in the case in light of that order.

The judges also focused on the larger procedural question of Louisiana’s standing to bring the case, meaning whether it had shown the regulations were harming it in a way that made it appropriate for courts to intervene.

“I’m having trouble finding anywhere in the record that the FDA has approved the mailing of this drug into states where it’s unlawful to do that,” Judge Priscilla Richman, a George W. Bush appointee, told Louisiana Solicitor General Ben Aguiñaga.

Multiple judges on the panel pointed to Supreme Court precedents – including in a separate, earlier abortion pill case brought anti-abortion doctors – that shut the door to lawsuits that could only establish the challenger’s standing to sue through an “attenuated” chain of events.

DOJ attorney Daniel Winik said those standing issues alone were enough of a reason for the court to reject Louisiana’s request, as he dodged questions from the judges about the state’s arguments that FDA’s regulatory approach to the drug is flawed.

But Judge Stephen Higginson, an Obama appointee, expressed frustration when Winnick said he was not “authorized” to give his views about whether Louisiana was required to take steps to air its objections through the regulatory process before it could file its lawsuit.

While the 5th Circuit is generally a very conservative court, the trio of judges assigned to this stage of the case had a moderate-left lean, with President Joe Biden appointee Judge Dana Douglas joining Higginson and Richman on the panel.

The case has brought political heat for the administration, as anti-abortion groups have been irate that Trump’s FDA hasn’t sought to end telehealth abortion on its own and that it’s opposing the legal challenges.

The FDA says it’s undertaking a review of the drug’s safety profile and has sought to put the entire case on hold for that reason. Anti-abortion activists have accused the FDA of slow-walking the issue for political reasons, while reproductive rights groups worry that the administration will clamp down on medication abortion access after the midterms.

Higginson repeatedly noted that courts in other parts of the country – in cases brought by abortion providers and reproductive rights groups – had issued rulings faulting the FDA for being too strict in its regulations for medication abortion. He also raised a 2021 Supreme Court ruling that reversed a lower court order that required the FDA to allow telehealth abortions because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I guess what I’m saying – and then Chief Justice Roberts writes — it looks like the Supreme Court is being constant with one principle: Let FDA do its work,” Higginson said.

Still, the 5th Circuit panel didn’t shy away from Louisiana’s arguments for second-guessing the FDA’s regulations, with several questions about the data the agency considered when coming with the current rules and about the administrative process for reconsidering the regulations.

Erik Baptist, a senior counsel for Alliance Defending Freedom, Louisiana’s co-counsel in the case, told CNN after the hearing that the court’s willingness to dig into the merits of the lawsuit gave Louisiana the opportunity to flesh out its argument.

“We were happy to explain (to) the 5th Circuit the numerous harms that the state of is Louisiana incurring” because of the FDA’s rules, he said, describing those regulations as an “intentional” effort to send medication abortion drugs into anti-abortion states.

Lindsay Clancy’s attorney says he’s going to ask for case to be thrown out after hearing from jurors

Kevin Reddington, the lawyer for Lindsay Clancy, said on Wednesday he will ask for the case against his client to be thrown out after hearing from several jurors in the case.

Reddington told “CBS Mornings” he will present a motion to dismiss on Sept. 29 at a previously scheduled status hearing.

“It will be a motion to dismiss based on what’s called double jeopardy grounds, because there’s no … manifest necessity,” Reddington said. “You have to have a manifest necessity to declare a mistrial for obvious reasons — the invested time that the jurors put into it, the court, the staff, the defendant, the prosecution, everybody.”

Clancy is accused of murdering her three young children — 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson and 8-month-old Callan — in their Duxbury, Massachusetts, home on Jan. 24, 2023. Her attorneys argued she was not criminally responsible because she was overmedicated and suffering from postpartum psychosis. Prosecutors said Clancy planned to strangle her children and knew right from wrong.

The highly publicized murder trial ended in a mistrial on Sept. 4 after the jurors could not come to a unanimous verdict after more than seven days of deliberation.

The jury was apparently split 11 to 1, as the foreperson sent a note to Judge William Sullivan on Sept. 3 claiming a single juror was not following the court’s orders about reasonable doubt.

“The majority of people, it doesn’t matter what side they were on, were very firm in their stance and their belief from the beginning,” the woman known as juror No. 5 told CBS Boston station WBZ-TV on Tuesday. “The stand-alone juror was not the only one that was unwilling to see things from the other side.”

The foreperson wrote that the juror “has made statements acknowledging doubt but refuses to apply it to the verdict as the law states,” Reddington said in court at the time.

However, Sullivan denied a motion by Reddington to dismiss that juror and a second request on Sept. 4 to further question jurors on the matter.

“I would defend that person’s right to be a holdout for a month. That’s what the system is about,” Reddington told “CBS Mornings.” “But when the forelady indicated clearly and unequivocally in the jury question that this person had doubt, reasonable doubt, as we know now, and just refused to listen to the judge’s instruction on the law, that’s when I was upset, because that’s why I used the expressions and the terms I did. It just wasn’t right.”

CBS News legal contributor Caroline Polisi referred to Reddington’s decision to push for a dismissal as “huge news,” although, she referred to it as a “long-shot motion.”

“He’s going to make a motion to bar a retrial. Typically when you have a mistrial, double jeopardy doesn’t apply, which means the prosecution can come right back and charge on the same charges,” Polisi said. “He’s making a motion based on double jeopardy, based on this one juror who, apparently, had reasonable doubt but refused to apply his conscience to the law, and was a holdout.”

“So what he’s arguing is that it was not a manifest necessity for the judge to call a mistrial and, essentially, the judge should have inquired further as to whether or not this juror could maintain his oath,” Polisi said. “That’s a huge deal. … If he wins that motion, she would go free.”

The other option is Plymouth, Massachusetts, District Attorney Tim Cruz could work out a plea deal that would include lesser charges for Clancy.

“It’s up to Tim,” Reddington said when asked about what he would want in a plea deal. “He could reduce the charge to second-degree [murder]. … I know enough to know it doesn’t matter what I’d like. All I know is that I’m not ever going to agree this young lady do a day in jail.”

Reddington said Clancy is “not well” when asked how she’s doing.

“I mean, in the sense that she’s disappointed, she’s sad and she still has the same affect that she’s had for three and a half years,” he said. “Thankfully she’s getting great psychiatric treatment, medical treatment at Tewksbury.”

The jury was faced with rendering a verdict on one of five options: not guilty by reason of insanity, not guilty, first-degree murder, second-degree murder or manslaughter.

Prosecutors have not yet said if they will retry the case after the mistrial. Reddington said he would not like to see another trial.

He does hope the trial at least makes people more aware of postpartum psychosis and the lack of psychiatric treatment.

“It’s so easy for people to say, ‘Oh, come on, you don’t hear voices. You’re making that up. You’re lying. You’re evil,’” he said. “Because it’s easier to punish someone.”

“It would be so easy for a lot of people if we could just put Lindsay in jail and say this is terrible, she’s evil and guilty,” Reddington continued. “No one is discounting the horrific loss of those kids, let alone Lindsay Clancy, who is well aware and lives with that every day.”

On asking Trump for a pardon

Reddington further explained why he asked President Trump for a pardon for Clancy in an interview Tuesday with ABC News, even though the president can only pardon federal crimes and Clancy is charged by the state.

“If I could reach out to the king of England and ask him for help, I would on this case,” Reddington told “CBS Mornings” on Wednesday. “The fact that the president of the United States made the comments that he did tells me that he is aware of the case. I also know that he’s an individual that is surrounded by very, very smart people and can very easily say to one of them, ‘Can you look into this for me and see what it’s all about?’ Trickling down to Tim Cruz, hopefully resolving the case.”

Last week, the president answered a question about the case from the Oval Office.

“Look, she did a horrible, horrible thing. Can’t be worse,” he said. “But you’ll find out what the price to pay is. There’ll be a price. It’s going to be mental institution or jail or something.”

The president noted another trial is possible, which he called “too bad.”

Reddington said he has not heard from the White House, but would “love to have” Mr. Trump reach out to the district attorney.

When asked if that would be appropriate, Reddington said, “If it helps resolve this tragic case, I don’t really care.”

Dolly Parton’s sister, Stella Parton, said the country music superstar chose to keep her battle with cancer private before she died late last month because she didn’t want people to worry.

“She did not want people sad,” Stella Parton told “CBS Mornings” co-host Gayle King in an exclusive interview. “She’d be really happy and delighted that people have shown her so much love.”

Dolly Parton died in Nashville on Aug. 25 at the age of 80 — a shock to fans around the world who weren’t aware of her illness.

Stella Parton said not even their whole extended family knew about Dolly’s cancer, saying that only “some of us knew, the ones of us that were closer.”

“Dolly could not bear negative things,” Stella Parton told King in the interview in Nashville. “And she would not have wanted her fans worried about it.”

Dolly Parton’s groundbreaking career spanned six decades in the music industry and launched her into TV and movie stardom.

Her team said, in announcing her death, that she died at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center “after bravely facing a brief battle with cancer.” Her family has not said what type of cancer she had, or how long she was sick.

Following her death, fans around the world as well as celebrities and politicians mourned the country music legend and praised her as an icon whose legacy will never be forgotten.

Netanyahu rejects claim he was warned ahead of Oct. 7, as 2023 attack fuels pre-election furor

As Israelis prepare to vote next month in a tightly contested legislative race that will determine the country’s next government, they’re still debating how their country was caught by surprise on Oct. 7, 2023, when the U.S.-designated terrorist group Hamas stormed across the border and killed more than 1,200 people and kidnapped hundreds more.

The discussion got new fuel when the Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported Monday that, just days before the attack that sparked the war in Gaza and arguably the much wider conflict across the Middle East, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was warned in a phone call by the leader of the United Arab Emirates that Gaza’s Hamas leaders were planning a major assault.

The Haaretz report said Netanyahu did not pass on the warning to Israel’s security leaders.

CBS News has not independently confirmed Haaretz’s reporting, which the Israeli newspaper said it stood by in a Tuesday statement.

The day Hamas attacked, Israel was caught by surprise, despite having observed preparations by Hamas for the assault, some of which the group itself posted in videos online.

Netanyahu’s office denied in a Tuesday statement that he had received any explicit warning from the Emirati leader leading up to the attack, and said he had “instructed his attorneys to file a defamation lawsuit” against Haaretz and the reporter who filed the story.

“No conversation took place between the Prime Minister and the President of the United Arab Emirates,” Netanyahu’s office said. “This is a malicious libel with clear political timing, as part of the left’s election campaign, and more such false smears will follow.”

Israel’s national legislative elections take place on Oct. 27, and there is currently no clear front-runner.

Former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, who is running against Netanyahu in the upcoming election and has met with the Emirati leader himself several times in recent years, wrote in a social media post Tuesday that he believed the Haaretz report was true, adding that Netanyahu’s “ignoring of the warnings is criminal negligence.”

The Haaretz report and subsequent denial by Netanyahu also gave a rare look into the high-stakes diplomacy of the Middle East.

Netanyahu’s office confirmed in its statement that, as reported by Haaretz, whenever the Emirati leader does wish to speak with the Israeli leader, a representative from the UAE travels to Netanyahu’s office and provides a specially encrypted phone for the conversation.

Netanyahu’s office said Tuesday that there is no record of a call between the Israeli and Emirati leaders from the beginning of September until Oct. 7, 2023. There was no record of an Emirati visitor to the prime minister’s office during that period either, Netanyahu’s office said.

The check for any such visit or phone call was conducted by the Prime Minister’s Office, the National Security Council (NSC) and the Military Secretariat, Netanyahu’s office said.

The UAE government said in a statement Tuesday that, since the country established normal ties with Israel five years ago, it has maintained “open and direct lines of communication.” The statement neither confirmed nor denied the Haaretz report about the phone call.

Netanyahu has argued that none of his advisers or security officials woke him up on Oct. 7 until Hamas’ attack was underway, and that it wasn’t he who failed to protect Israel that day, but the heads of the country’s security agencies.

Questions over Netanyahu’s actions on that day burst back into public debate last week after Israel’s national broadcaster Kan News revealed that three hours passed between Netanyahu being woken up by his military secretary at 6:27 a.m., as the invasion began, and when he first requested to speak with the country’s top general.

Netanyahu’s office released a schedule roughly confirming that timeline, but it added that he spoke with Israel’s defense minister around 8 a.m. that day, on his way to the ministry of defense.

In the weeks and days leading up to the attack, Netanyahu was warned by top security and political officials that Israel’s enemies were considering an attack while the country was being rocked by protests against an effort by Netanyahu’s government to overhaul the judicial system, according to statements issued by Netanyahu and security officials at the time.

Netanyahu has argued that those warnings did not specifically mention an attack originating from Gaza, or a clear timeline. He has also argued that the assessment of his security chiefs at the time was that Hamas was not interested in a major escalation.

So far, the Israeli leader has rejected demands for a formal state inquiry into the Oct. 7 attack, which is regular procedure in Israel after national catastrophes.

Netanyahu’s political opponents have said they would establish one immediately, if they win power in October.

Former U.S. Ambassador to Canada David L. Cohen is blaming the Trump administration’s hardline trade pressure for pushing Ottawa into engaging with China.

“I think Canada has tentatively tried to play some footsie with China that the Trump administration may not be happy with,” Cohen, who served as former President Joe Biden’s ambassador to Canada from 2021 to 2025, said in an interview with Fox News Digital.

“There is a discomfort with that,” Cohen says, while arguing that it is ultimately Canada’s reflex to sentiment against President Donald Trump – particularly his hardline trade policies and rhetoric about the neighbor to the north being a “51st state.”

“One of downsides of the aggressive Trump administration treatment of Canada and many other allies and partners is that the irony is that those policies are pushing those countries to at least consider broader and larger deals with China, which of course is wholly inconsistent with a major thrust of President Trump’s international trade policy,” Cohen continued. “So, how that shakes out, it’s all a matter of degree and balance.

“But I think there’s no doubt that the aggressiveness of the Trump administration positions has caused many countries to at least reevaluate whether there are additional deals that can be made with China.”

The comments come as U.S.-Canada trade tensions spiral after negotiations collapsed last month. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney last night accused Washington of seeking dependence rather than partnership.

“The most fundamental issue is that the cumulative U.S. demands revealed that they wanted us to become even more reliant on them, not less,” Carney said Tuesday. “In too many areas, they wanted dependency, not a true economic partnership.”

Notably, the fallout comes just weeks before Chinese dictator Xi Jinping makes an historic trip to the White House to talk trade – something that never happened during the Biden administration despite Biden’s onetime quip before the COVID-19 pandemic that “China’s not bad folks.”

Vice President JD Vance, speaking in Maine last month, accused Canada of giving Chinese goods better treatment than products from American northern border states.

“They treat Chinese goods more fairly than they do the goods that come from the people of Maine: It’s insanity,” Vance said. “And what we’ve said to Canada is stop it.”

Cohen, however, was careful not to cast Canada as blameless in the trade feud. He admitted U.S. dairy farmers have legitimate complaints about Canada’s tariff-rate quota system, saying the issue has frustrated administrations of both parties for years.

“This is one of the totally legitimate trade issues that exists between the United States and Canada,” Cohen said. “There is contention there that is hurting American dairy farmers. Yes, I will be honest and clear about that.”

“That tension existed under Joe Biden. Was he able to solve that problem? No,” he added. “It was something that was discussed and discussed more than once. We just never got there.”

Cohen, supportive of Trump’s “substance” on trade talks but not the “style,” did credit Trump for replacing NAFTA with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, calling USMCA a “terrific deal” that improved continental trade.

“I gave President Trump a lot of credit for that because it was a much better deal than NAFTA,” Cohen said. “I think he deserves credit for that.”

“I do push back at times on some of the rhetoric that President Trump has chosen to use, not necessarily the substance, but maybe the style that he sometimes uses to pursue his substance,” he added.

“There are such fundamental differences on the substance of President Trump’s trade policy that I think the treatment of President Trump is different than the treatment of President Biden,” Cohen observed. “But when professional negotiators were in the room, they seemed to have been making a lot of progress.”

Cohen believes the two sides need to return to professional negotiators, arguing that U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Canadian officials had shown they could discuss difficult issues before the talks broke down.

“I have an enormous amount of respect for U.S. Trade Representative Greer,” Cohen said. “He is the ultimate professional trade negotiator, which is why he’s in that job. He didn’t get there by accident. President Trump put him in that job.”

By contrast, Cohen said Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick – who was on the call that Friday night in August when talks broke down at the 11th hour – needs to stay in his lane.

“Secretary of Commerce Lutnick, with all due respect, is not a professional negotiator,” Cohen said. “That’s not the Commerce secretary’s job. It’s USTR’s job to negotiate trade deals with other countries.”

Lutnick has suggested in interviews about the infamous breakdown in talks that Canadians’ politics are at play in keeping Carney from cutting a deal with Trump, a man the provincial leaders and Canadian public have long been disenchanted with.

“Friday at 4 o’clock, the Canadians call: They start adding crazy ideas to the mix,” Lutnick said recently. “So, I said to one of the ministers, ‘Are you actually trying to blow this up?’ And his answer to me was, ‘I’m not allowed to say that.’ And they blew it up for political reasons only.”

Cohen said of Lutnick’s account that “until proven otherwise, I take every senior government official at his word, period,” and that he has “no way of knowing whether that is true or not.”

But, he admitted, Carney taking the nearly finished trade deal back to the provinces did not go over well – particularly amid his rising popularity among Canadians for being an anti-Trump force – because “the premiers of the provinces have more sway in federal policy than most governors do in federal policy.”

“It appears that Canada made the decision that the deal that was being offered was not a deal that they could accept,” Cohen said. “He may have made a judgment that although he and his team had pushed this deal as far as they could, and that it was, in his eyes, as good a deal as he was going to get at that point, that he could not sell that politically in Canada.”

“That’s not the same as saying that he was walking away for political reasons,” Cohen added. “It’s just the nature of a big, complex negotiation.”

Ultimately, Cohen said the breakdown between the closest allies and trade partners in the world will be a story long told.

“There are going to be books written about what caused the negotiations to fall apart,” he said. “But independent of all the dialogue about that: There is no dispute that these professional negotiators were able to have a civil relationship and talk about really different difficult substantive issues out of the eyes and the ears of the press and with full respect for each other and for the countries. That’s my vision for the way in which trade negotiations should occur and they did occur – and it was a two-way street.”

Eventually, after the trade-war barbs and tariffs fly and the dust settles, the “professional negotiators” will get things done, Cohen predicted.

“You can’t make a deal if you’re not talking to each other,” Cohen said. “Of that, I am 100% certain.”

Myths and facts about donating blood, and how it could reveal clues about your own health

The American Red Cross declared its second-ever national blood supply crisis this summer amid a shortage that’s threatening patients around the country. Blood has a short shelf life, and only 3% of eligible donors give blood regularly. Summer accidents and emergencies can put an already-strained stock at risk, and regular donors may skip their appointments, compounding the problem.

We sat down with Dr. Courtney Lawrence, a divisional chief medical officer at the organization, to talk about the importance of blood donation, the myths and facts around the process and how donating can reveal information about your own health.

How blood shortages put women at risk

Women can be more affected by a blood crisis than men, because they are more likely to need a transfusion, Lawrence said. There are a number of reasons why.

Women have lower hemoglobin than men, on average. Hemoglobin levels are one of the pieces of data doctors use to determine when a blood transfusion should be done. Because women’s levels are lower on average, there “can be a period where they’re more likely to need blood transfusion,” Lawrence explained.

There are also certain risk periods, like pregnancy, where women are more prone to anemia, and childbirth, where emergencies may necessitate a blood transfusion, Lawrence said.

The key health information blood donation reveals

Blood donors undergo a brief health screening before each donation. It collects data about a person’s weight, blood pressure and other data about their blood.

Donors who use the Red Cross app can even track that data.

“We know at least a third of the population does not get in regularly to see a primary healthcare provider. So that’s a lot of people who don’t have a constant touch point with a physician or a nurse practitioner and some of them may come in to donate blood every two months,” Lawrence said. “We’re a frequent touch point and this is already information that we need because we want to make sure that we’re keeping our donors safe when they come in to donate.”

“So if we’re already checking these parameters, their heart rate, their blood pressure, their hemoglobin, this health history, why not make that information also accessible and trackable to those donors, so that if we do find that there’s something that could benefit from a healthcare provider intervention, then they can take that information back to their healthcare provider and already have it accessible to them?” she added.

There is also emerging research that shows giving blood can improve your overall health. Some small studies show that giving blood regularly can help control your blood pressure, Lawrence said. Donating blood also temporarily lowers your iron levels. Some studies show this can help some individuals improve their heart health, Lawrence said.

One thing donating blood can’t do, Lawrence said, is help prevent cancer, despite viral claims.Sometimes, tests can show irregularities that prompt people to get checked out by a doctor, but it’s “certainly not the primary reason that we have people come in and screen,” Lawrence said.

Breaking down blood donation myths

During our conversation, Lawrence weighed in on some of the most popular myths surrounding blood donation. Here’s what to know.

• “I have a tattoo or permanent makeup, so I can’t give blood.” Whether you can donate after getting tattooed depends on if you go to a tattoo facility that is state regulated, Lawrence said. If the facility is regulated, you can donate again within three months. If it is not, you may be deferred.
• “I don’t have a rare blood type, so my blood donation isn’t really needed.” This is “absolutely not” true, Lawrence said. “Regardless of what your blood type is, there is a patient out there that would benefit from it.”
• “I have high blood pressure, so it’s too dangerous for me to donate blood.” This is generally false, Lawrence said. The donor screening would catch a blood pressure level that is too high to safely donate. If you have high blood pressure that’s under control, “you are free to come in and donate blood,” Lawrence said.
• “I have diabetes or I am taking a GLP-1 medication, so I can’t give blood.” This is also generally false, Lawrence said. Those with well-controlled diabetes can donate blood. People taking Food and Drug Administration-approved diabetes treatments, including GLP-1s, can donate blood.
• “You should fast before giving blood, similar to a blood test.” This is absolutely false, Lawrence said. Eat a hearty meal and stay hydrated to “set yourself up for success” with your donation.
• “Giving blood can make you anemic.” This is generally false, Lawrence said, though regular donors should talk with their primary care physician to ensure they don’t need more iron in their diet or an iron supplement.

Teen rescued alive clinging to fishing boat, 2 others found dead in Bering Sea off Alaska

Two boaters were found dead and the third, a teenager, was rescued alive after their fishing boat capsized in the Bering Sea off Alaska, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

Crews initiated a search early Monday for three people who were reported missing by Alaska State Troopers at about 8:30 p.m. Sunday evening, after their 18-foot fishing boat was confirmed to be overdue. Weather and poor visibility prevented Coast Guard crews from searching until Monday morning.

The Coast Guard said one of its aircraft located a 15-year-old boater “clinging on to the capsized vessel” and experiencing symptoms of hypothermia. The fishing boat was found overturned about 4 miles off the coast of St. Lawrence Island, the Coast Guard said.

An aircrew was able to safely arrange the teen’s rescue by deploying a raft and equipment down to him from above, and coordinating with a good Samaritan boat that took the survivor aboard before leaving the scene to refuel. The bodies of the two deceased boaters were also recovered from the water and taken aboard the same good Samaritan boat, which took their remains and the survivor to the western Alaskan port city of Nome.

“Our hearts go out to the families, friends, and communities affected by the tragic loss of these two mariners,” said Bob Little, commander of the Coast Guard’s Arctic District, in a statement. “We are grateful for the incredible efforts of the motor vessel Northwest Explorer, Federal, State, Village first responders and mission partners who assisted in the effort that resulted in a life saved.”

Before the incident, the fishing boat had last been seen Friday, leaving St. Lawrence Island from an area called Savoonga along its northern coast. The Coast Guard said it was expected to return to St. Lawrence at around 3 a.m. Sunday morning.

The sparsely inhabited island is technically part of Alaska but located about 100 miles from its mainland. It’s closer to Russia, on the opposite side of the Bering Strait, than it is to North America. The section of the northern Pacific Ocean where it lies is known for its notoriously rough and frigid waters, which can quickly turn treacherous.

Neither the deceased boaters nor the survivor were identified by officials. But the Anchorage Daily News reported that the two found dead were the survivor’s brother and cousin, respectively.

The surviving teen told the captain of the good Samaritan boat, Adam White, that he had clung to the capsized skiff for several days after it overturned, according to the Anchorage Daily News.

“That is one remarkably tough kid, is all I can say,” White said, according to the newspaper.
