    blob:https://www.cbsnews.com/1312f6a4-e2aa-42b4-adb2-ee3e31e992b7

Maduro, wife seek dismissal of drug trafficking indictment on immunity grounds

    September 3, 2026 / 5:08 AM EDT / CBS/AP

New York — Former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife asked a judge on Wednesday to dismiss the drug trafficking indictment against them on the grounds that they have immunity as the leader and first lady of a foreign country.

In papers filed in Manhattan federal court, lawyers for Maduro said a judge was required by law to reject the indictment because it cannot be brought against a foreign leader.

“No American court has ever presided over the criminal trial of a foreign leader who was recognized by their own country as the sitting head of state at the time the charges were brought,” the lawyers wrote. “That is not an accident of history. It reflects a rule older than the common law: heads of state are exempt from the criminal process of any national court but their own.”

Maduro and his wife are scheduled to go on trial on drug trafficking charges next June 1. Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein has set oral arguments for Nov. 17 on motions to dismiss the indictment.

Maduro, 63, and his wife, Cilia Flores, 69, have been held at a Brooklyn jail since U.S. forces seized them from their Caracas home in a middle-of-the-night raid in early January and brought them to New York.

In separate papers filed Wednesday, lawyers for Flores said she too has immunity from U.S. prosecution on sovereign immunity grounds.

“It is an attribute of Venezuela’s sovereignty, and only Venezuela may surrender it,” her lawyers wrote.

    blob:https://www.cbsnews.com/1312f6a4-e2aa-42b4-adb2-ee3e31e992b7

Maduro’s lawyers said that even if Maduro were not entitled to sovereign immunity as the head of state, the case against him must be dismissed because he is also entitled to conduct-based sovereign immunity.

Meanwhile, the lawyers argued, Maduro “vehemently denies the allegations against him.”

“If this case were to proceed to trial, it would be apparent that he has been falsely accused,” they said.

Both have pleaded not guilty in a criminal case first brought six years ago against numerous alleged co-conspirators. They face potential life prison sentences if a jury agrees that they were part of a conspiracy to send cocaine into the U.S.

Federal prosecutors are scheduled to file a response to the arguments later this month.

President Trump’s administration has defended the raid to capture Maduro as a “surgical law enforcement operation.” Maduro has called himself a prisoner of war and his capture a kidnapping.

U.S. prosecutors say Maduro carried out a conspiracy to move thousands of tons of cocaine into the U.S. by colluding with Venezuelan law enforcement to help drug kingpins.

Maduro has remained defiant. On Sunday, he posted pictures of himself from prison on social media, saying he was “standing firm.”

“I send these photos as a small gift to all my grandsons and granddaughters, to the boys and girls, and to all the noble people who love us,” he wrote.

“I want you to know that we stand firm, with our hearts full of your love, that love that reaches us transformed into prayer, into constant action, into solidarity and true support. Infinite thanks for every word, for every gesture, for every blessing,” he went on to say.

On the Telegram messaging service, he added, “We will remain strong, calm and confident: God is with us. God will provide. Venezuela will rise again,” French news agency AFP reported.

Texas Republicans turn against data centers, putting big tech on notice

    2026-09-03T10:02:13.647Z / Reuters

NEW YORK, Sept 3 (Reuters) – Less than a year ago, Texas Governor Greg Abbott hailed Texas as the “epicenter of AI development.” Now, in his bid for re-election, he is calling for sweeping new restrictions on data centers.

    And he’s hardly alone.

Jumpstart your morning with the latest legal news delivered straight to your inbox from The Daily Docket newsletter. Sign up here.

Across the country, as Democrats ride a wave of local opposition to data centers ahead of the November elections, Republicans are increasingly breaking from U.S. President Donald Trump’s pro-AI agenda.

Republican candidates in at least five states – including Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania – have recently adopted tougher rhetoric on data centers or proposed restrictions on their development, creating a new fault line within the party.

The debate is “pitting pro-growth instincts and the push to beat China in the AI race against a populist backlash over affordability,” said Brad Dayspring, a Republican strategist with Purple Strategies.

The most striking shift is happening in Texas, a conservative, oil-rich state that has worked for years to reinvent itself as a national tech hub. Abundant land and business-friendly regulations have attracted leading tech companies like SpaceX

    and Oracle

and lured wealthy entrepreneurs like Elon Musk.

Even there, though, public sentiment has turned sharply against data centers, which opponents say drive up electric and water bills, pollute the night sky with lights and don’t create enough tax revenue or jobs to justify the incentives states have paid.

An August poll by the Texas Politics Project found only 30% of respondents would support a data center in their community.

Big tech companies are trying to play catch-up, pouring more than $300 million into the midterms, according to election records, company and committee disclosures, and rolling out a massive ad campaign to educate consumers about the benefits of data centers.

But as the backlash spreads, Abbott is calling for expansive new regulations on data centers, the repeal of tax incentives for their construction and restrictions on development in rural communities. A state audit he announced on August 3 has effectively paused approvals for new grid connections.

Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton, locked in a tight Senate race, has also hardened his stance on AI, unveiling a plan late last month that his campaign says will keep America competitive while stopping the “negative impact of data centers.”

Abbott and Paxton’s rhetorical pivot puts them at odds with Trump, the leader of their party, who warned in a Truth Social post Monday that Americans fighting data centers risked ending up “backwards and poor.”

Republican officials have downplayed the split with Trump.

“We’re going to advise our candidates to do what’s best for them and their communities,” said Natalie Baldassarre, national press secretary for the Republican National Committee. “It’s not a one-size-fits-all approach.”

    JOCKEYING FOR POSITION

Texas is one of the nation’s largest and fastest-growing markets for AI-related data center development, hosting OpenAI’s flagship Stargate campus in Abilene, among other major projects.

Paxton once embraced AI data centers as an engine of job creation and economic growth. As a state senator in 2013, he voted for a tax incentive that later became a major driver of data-center investment in Texas.

In February, local commissioners in Hood County, Texas, requested Paxton’s opinion on whether they had the legal authority to temporarily halt development of data centers. Half a year later, the request is still pending, according to the attorney general’s website.

Paxton’s opponent, Democrat James Talarico, has accused him of political opportunism, pointing to campaign contributions he’s accepted from the tech industry.

“He’s scared his ties to big data center companies will lose him the election, so he’s making a sad attempt to reverse course,” Talarico said in a statement.

The Paxton campaign did not respond to questions about his shifting position on data centers, but accused Talarico of taking money from some of the same corporate interests and voting for a sales tax incentive for large data centers as a Texas state senator in 2023.

“He’s a hypocrite who’s bought and paid for by his coastal billionaire donors,” Paxton’s campaign said in a statement.

Both candidates trying to position themselves as populists standing up to deep-pocketed donors is a sign, analysts say, of how much the ground has shifted.

For Republicans especially, who have long positioned themselves as champions of corporate America, there is growing recognition that “it’s important to put some distance between themselves and the big tech companies behind these data centers,” said David Karol, a political scientist at the University of Maryland.

In the governor’s race, Abbott’s Democratic opponent Gina Hinojosa has called data centers “the fight of this election season.”

“Everybody knows that his temporary pause on the approval of new data center developments ends November 4, the day after the election,” Hinojosa said in an interview.

Eduardo Leal, press secretary for Abbott’s campaign, said in a statement that the governor “has directed Texas regulators to ensure data centers do not take water needed by communities or power needed by the Texas grid … lower electricity costs for consumers, and pay for their own electricity infrastructure.”

    BIG TECH PLAYS CATCH-UP

That data centers have become such a prominent feature of this year’s midterm elections is a product of big tech being slow to respond to public backlash, observers say.

“Two years of local opposition and the industry wasn’t necessarily engaging at the level they needed to,” said veteran political strategist Kevin Madden, a former adviser to Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

Leading AI companies are trying to rectify the mistake.

Two super PACs with ties to Anthropic have so far spent more than $2.6 million in Texas, while super PACs linked to OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman have spent more than $4.8 million across the state, federal election filings show. Meta

has given about $1.4 million to a super PAC focused on candidates for state office in Texas, according to tax filings.

But changing the conversation will be an uphill battle for data center supporters, who now face resistance from Democrats and Republicans alike.

“It’s striking at a time when the parties seem to disagree on everything that there’s been bipartisan movement against data centers,” Karol said.

U.S. journalist Thomas Pauken II gets 2 year sentence for acting as agent for China, DOJ says

    September 3, 2026 6:14 AM EDT / CBS/AP

Washington — An American journalist has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for acting as an agent of a foreign government within the United States, the U.S. Justice Department said.

Thomas Weir Pauken II, 51, pleaded guilty earlier this year and is not planning to appeal, according to his defense lawyer, Charles Burnham. Pauken also was sentenced to 36 months of supervised release with no overseas travel, the department said in a news release on Tuesday. He was arrested in February.

The case is the latest in a series of federal prosecutions involving people accused of working for the Chinese government without proper disclosure, as tensions between Washington and Beijing remain high.

“Pauken betrayed his country for money” for supporting “Chinese Ministry of State Security (MSS) operations, recruiting, and gathering of sensitive information from potential assets,” said Assistant Attorney General for National Security John A. Eisenberg in the news release.

“The National Security Division is committed to holding accountable anyone who aids or abets Chinese espionage efforts,” Eisenberg added.

Pauken worked as a journalist for various Chinese news organizations after moving to China in 2010, including state broadcaster CCTV. He most recently worked as an editor for Xinhua, China’s state news agency, a position he had held since 2024.

“Mr. Pauken has accepted responsibility and respects the court’s sentence,” his lawyer said, adding that “as the government agreed in court, Mr. Pauken did not provide any classified information to the Chinese.”

According to court documents, from at least 2019 until February 2026, Pauken worked at the direction of people he knew worked for China’s government, including a person he met in 2017 identified as “Cathy.” “Cathy” told him the reports were read by Chinese President Xi Jinping, according to a Feb. 27 federal court affidavit filed by FBI Special Agent Timothy J. Healy.

Pauken received at least $100,000 for his work with “Cathy,” the department said.

In addition to writing reports, Pauken was asked by “Cathy” to recruit people to provide classified information. In one case, Pauken was instructed to meet with a person identified in the affidavit as “Person 1” and provide the person a Samsung phone, a computer, and passwords for Signal and Telegram, as well as NetDisk.

Pauken was stopped by Customs and Border Protection agents when he returned to the U.S. in January 2025. In interviews with CBP and FBI agents, Pauken said he was “80 percent sure” that the person who was seeking a job in the Trump administration would provide classified information to China, although Pauken advised the person not to, according to the affidavit.

Pauken also told investigators “Cathy” would usually pay for his trips to the U.S. through the years, and often wired payments to his wife’s bank accounts, the affidavit said.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs didn’t immediately respond on Wednesday to a request seeking comment.

Pauken, a Texas native, used the alias of Tom McGregor when working as a commentator and writer at the request of his father, who shares his name and wanted to distance himself from his son’s work in China.

The younger Pauken published two books under his real name, Thomas W. Pauken II. One was published in 2019 about U.S.-China relations and another in 2023 about Shenzhen, a city across from Hong Kong in mainland China.

Pauken’s father was a former chairman of the Texas Republican Party in the 1990s and ran for governor more than a decade ago.

In the most recent publicly visible Facebook post under McGregor’s name, Pauken shared photos of his wife and child on a trip, writing “My family and I enjoying our trip to Washington DC.” He was arrested later that month.

    2026-09-03T11:35:19.490Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/09/03/politics/trump-administration-smithsonian-letter-executive-agencies

Trump administration says agencies may stop working with the Smithsonian

    2026-09-03T11:35:19.490Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/09/03/politics/trump-administration-smithsonian-letter-executive-agencies

The Trump administration has suggested federal agencies may stop working with the Smithsonian Institution if its leadership does not change, ramping up a monthslong pressure campaign to align the world’s largest museum complex with its views.

In an August 28 letter to the Smithsonian’s governing body that was recently made public, administration officials said government agencies cannot “in good conscience” support the institution and may cease “loaning artifacts for exhibits, enabling procurement processes and making discretionary grants,” citing a White House report that claimed the institution was promoting “extreme political activism” at the National Museum of American History in Washington, DC.

It’s a sign that the Trump administration is considering more aggressive measures to exert influence on content at the Smithsonian, which has tried to maintain its independence despite unprecedented scrutiny of its programming. President Donald Trump has tasked aides with rooting out “woke” ideology and what he considers a rewriting of American history at the museums.

“Because these concerns arise from executive leadership and institutional ideology at the Smithsonian, the appropriate response must likewise address executive leadership and institutional ideology,” wrote Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and Vince Haley, the director of the White House’s Domestic Policy Council, in the letter.

They also wrote that the administration has “recently uncovered evidence” that the Smithsonian’s “institutional culture may have resulted in significant violations of Federal antidiscrimination law” without providing examples. CNN has reached out to the Smithsonian and the Interior Department for comment and more information.

While the 179-year-old institution is a unique public-private trust and does not consider itself an executive agency, the federal government supplies two-thirds of its budget. The government also frequently collaborates with the Smithsonian on museum initiatives and research projects.

In the letter, the officials asked the Smithsonian’s Board of Regents to meet with them in person to discuss the White House’s findings, which were released on July 4. The National Museum of American History’s Director, Andrea Hartig, said at a July congressional hearing that the report “does not fairly or accurately characterize the full body of work at the museum.”

“The museum does not take sides in America’s political debates. We preserve and document the evidence of American life in all of its breadth, so that the public can encounter the past and draw their own conclusions,” she said.

The letter comes weeks after Trump ordered the National Park Service to install temporary signage near the American history museum that warned of “inaccurate information” in the exhibits.

White House scrutiny of the Smithsonian dates back to March 2025, when Trump signed an executive order directing Vice President JD Vance to seek the appointment of public members to the Smithsonian’s Board of Regents who are aligned with his priorities for the institution. Months later, the White House launched an unprecedented, sweeping review of the Smithsonian, asking for extensive documents about its museum exhibitions and operations.

Members of the board include Chief Justice John Roberts, Republican and Democratic members of Congress, and members of the public who are mostly former business executives and nonprofit board members.

Two of nine public regents’ terms have expired and two other spots will open up by the beginning of October, according to a term chart on the Smithsonian website. This could give Trump a chance to try to expand his influence on the board before the November midterm elections shake up Congress. New board members are appointed via congressional joint resolutions that the president must sign into law.

CNN reported earlier this year that there is unanimity among the citizen members that the Smithsonian should remain independent and not be influenced by the administration.

Lonnie Bunch III, the institution’s head since 2019, told CNN in a May interview that the institution has maintained its autonomy as it complied with the White House’s request for information.

“My goal is that history is driven by scholarship, not partisanship,” he said. “The Smithsonian always does its own scholarship. It’s always driven by that. We have always worked with different administrations, but it’s always about what our scholarship tells us.”

CNN’s Renee Marsh, Aleena Fayaz and Michael Williams contributed to this report.

Gloria Steinem, trailblazing figure in women’s liberation movement, dies at age 92

    By David Morgan

Gloria Steinem, a co-founder of Ms. Magazine and a trailblazing figure of the women’s liberation movement in the latter half of the 20th century, has died. She was 92.

The Gloria Steinem Foundation said in a social media post Thursday that she “passed away peacefully at her home in New York City, surrounded by some of the many who loved her.” The cause of death was not given.

“She was one of the architects of the entire structure of women’s equality, I mean tearing down those obstacles to young women being able to participate where their talents and hard work took them,” former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told “CBS Mornings” on Thursday.

“Gloria was at heart an optimist,” Clinton said. “Her activism was rooted in optimism, and that’s a moral choice, and she made it every day.”

Heralded by Newsweek magazine in 1971 as “The New Woman,” Steinem co-founded Ms. Magazine, the first major publication to be owned, run and written by women. Ms. was a spearhead for the promotion of equal rights, helping to raise awareness about issues of inclusion, media representation and social justice affecting women and girls, at a time when politics, mass media and consumerism were becoming conflated as never before.

As a journalist, Steinem exploded the notions that “women’s issues” were confined to women, or that female voices did not belong in discussions of politics or war. Steinem was a tireless advocate for women’s voices in politics — at the ballot box, and in the halls of power — by fighting for voting rights and promoting female candidates for office.

She advanced the cause of economic and social justice for women and girls, including reproductive freedom and safety from domestic violence, and worked to advance women in media. And a simple idea, Take Our Daughters to Work Day, begun by the Ms. Foundation for Women to advance opportunities in the workplace, would become a global endeavor encompassing millions of daughters (and sons) as it fought gender stereotypes.

    The birth of Ms.

In her early years as a reporter for New York magazine in the late 1960s, Steinem attended a gathering of women speaking out about their experiences obtaining an illegal abortion. She told “Sunday Morning” in 2006, “I heard women standing up and saying in public and taking seriously something that only affected women. Up until then, I’d never heard that. If it didn’t also affect men, it couldn’t be ‘serious.’ Something that was illegal, shameful, theoretically. (Women who had abortions) had to enter a criminal underground. And suddenly I thought, ‘Wait a minute: You know, if one and three or four of us, and I too, had had that experience, why is it illegal?’ And that was the beginning of the unraveling.”

That “unraveling” of consciousness would lead to Ms. Magazine. Co-founded with activist Dorothy Pittman Hughes, the publication’s first full issue appeared on newsstands on July 1, 1972. In addition to having Wonder Woman on its cover, the issue featured a petition signed by women of various backgrounds announcing that they had had an abortion and were demanding that it become safe and legal. (It would be another year before the Supreme Court’s decision to protect abortion rights with Roe v. Wade, which stood until 2022.)

Katherine Spillar, an executive editor of Ms., who compiled a 2023 anthology titled “50 Years of Ms.: The Best of the Pathfinding Magazine That Ignited a Revolution,”told “Sunday Morning” that the magazine started and amplified trends, including “a lot of articles about men and marriage and relationships and childrearing and politics and violence against women — (issues) that keep coming back. And it shows the endurance of this movement, but also the endurance of our opponents.”

And of course there was controversy. A cover photo advertising a story about sexual harassment on the job, depicting a man fondling a doll, got the magazine pulled off newsstands. And selling ads was a challenge; the head of a major cosmetics company told Steinem that women who read Ms. don’t buy makeup, while car manufacturers didn’t want to advertise because they didn’t believe women bought cars.

Still, the magazine persisted, and won awards while publishing articles by such writers as Barbara Ehrenreich, Angela Davis, Alice Walker, Susan Faludi, Susan Brownmiller, Eleanor Holmes Norton, and Jane Wagner. It continued as feminism itself charted new courses. While coming under attack from commentators on the right, who claimed the magazine denigrated “family values,” Ms. was also attacked by some on the left, who claimed the magazine was too conservative and lacked a diversity of opinion.

Steinem said that, as the women’s liberation movement picked up steam, the very word “feminism” seemed to threaten people for two reasons: “One, because they didn’t understand it, and two, because they did understand it!”

Ms. underwent several owners beginning in the 1980s (including a female-driven consortium of investors led by Steinem herself), and a period of ad-free publication, before transitioning to a quarterly. And it continued as the status of women in America changed. In 1972, only 10% of doctors, 4% of lawyers and 1% of engineers were women. Five decades later, those figures had grown to 38%, 41% and 16%, respectively.

But Steinem said the revolution about equality for women is still being fought. “There’s a barrier that has moved, but there’s still a barrier,” Steinem told “Sunday Morning” in 2006. “So, what used to be you couldn’t get a job, now you hit a ceiling after a few years. What used to be unequal marriage, is now unequal after children are born. The barrier has moved, thank goodness. So, there’s more room back here that’s liberated. But the barrier is still there to be pushed.”

While some were denigrating the term “feminism” itself since the 1960s, Steinem told CBS News in 2015 that she believed the core tenets of feminism are by and large approved of today: “If people just go to the dictionary and discover that [feminist] means a person — male or female —who believes in the full equality of women and men, then they do subscribe to it. And it is a majority now, which it didn’t used to be.”

    Pushing feminism into the mainstream

Born on March 25, 1934, in Toledo, Ohio, Gloria Marie Steinem lived an itinerant life as her family moved about, residing in a house trailer, until her parents’ separation and divorce when she was a teenager. Steinem and her mother settled in Toledo, where Gloria ended up caring for her mom, who suffered from mental illness. She then moved to Washington, D.C., to live with her older sister, Susanne, and complete high school.

After graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Smith College in 1956, Steinem traveled to India on a scholarship. On her way, while in London, she received a doctor’s assistance in obtaining an abortion, something that was illegal in Britain (and America) at the time. She told NPR in 2015 that she’d tried other methods to terminate her pregnancy but failed: “I really was desperate. I just knew that if I went home and married, which I would’ve had to do, it would be to the wrong person; it would be to a life that wasn’t mine, that wasn’t mine at all.”

Steinem’s career as a journalist began in New York City, where she contributed as a writer to several publications. (One 1965 New York Times article was titled “Nylons in the Newsroom”.) Her first major assignment was a 1962 Esquire article on contraception and premarital sex.

She made a splash with her two-part 1963 exposé in Show magazine for which she went undercover as a Playboy Bunny at Hugh Hefner’s Playboy Club. She spent two weeks in high heels, forced to wear a Bunny costume that was purposely two sizes too small in order to accentuate the female servers’ curves. She wrote, “The boning in the waist would have made Scarlett O’Hara blanch. [The] entire construction tended to push all available flesh up to the bosom. I was sure it would be perilous to bend over.”

The article, which exposed sexual harassment on the club’s floor and the toll on female employees behind the scenes (including mandatory blood tests and gynecological exams), was a sensation. But Steinem had mixed feelings regarding the outcome. As she explained in a 2011 conversation with Interview magazine:

“At first, it was such a gigantic mistake from a career point of view that I really regretted it. I’d just begun to be taken seriously as a freelance writer, but after the Playboy article, I mostly got requests to go underground in some other semi-sexual way. It was so bad that I returned an advance to turn the Playboy article into a paperback, even though I had to borrow the money. … But feminism did make me realize that I was glad I did it – because I identified with all the women who ended up an underpaid waitress in too-high heels and a costume that was too tight to breathe in. Most were just trying to make a living and had no other way of doing it. … In the sense that we’re all identified too much by our outsides instead of our insides and are mostly in underpaid service jobs, I realized we’re all Bunnies.”

In 1968 Esquire features editor Clay Felker invited Steinem to help found New York Magazine, a news, pop culture and style publication. With a writer’s rostrum that included such names as Tom Wolfe, Jimmy Breslin and Peter Maas, Gloria Steinem was advertised as “writing about the kind of things the ladies magazines don’t let her write about.” Those topics included local and national politics, the Vietnam War, the “New Marriage,” childcare, welfare, and women and power. As a sign of her celebrity, she was invited onto “The Tonight Show.”

Steinem befriended Dorothy Pittman Hughes, a childcare advocate on New York’s Upper West Side whom she profiled for New York, and the two made public appearances together to discuss the women’s movement. (Steinem was uncomfortable speaking in public, and preferred to have Hughes with her.) The two devised a magazine that aimed to push feminism into the mainstream, called Ms. — a newly emerging designation for women who did not want to be bound by the titles Mrs. or Miss, identifiers of marital status.

Felker volunteered to publish a sample issue within the pages of New York magazine in 1971. Steinem and the Ms. team then hit the publicity circuit: “And when I got to California, somebody called the radio show I was on and said, ‘You know, we can’t find it,’” Steinem recalled to “Sunday Morning” in 2023. “And I called Clay Felker in a panic and I said, ‘It didn’t get here.’ And it turned out, it had sold out! That was a moment of recognition that, you know, it had an audience.”

    Beyond Ms.

In 1973, Steinem — along with Marlo Thomas, Patricia Carbine and Letty Cottin Pogrebin — created the Ms. Foundation for Women to advance the cause of women and girls, supporting grassroots efforts and advocating for economic justice, safety and reproductive freedom. The foundation also created the Take Our Daughters to Work Day initiative, which was later expanded to sons and daughters.

Steinem was involved in helping nurture other groups and publications dedicated to advancing civil rights. She helped found the Women’s Action Alliance, which advocated for equality, supported battered women’s shelters, and fought stereotyping; and the National Women’s Political Caucus, which promoted women in public office.

She was president and co-founder of Voters for Choice (which later merged with the Planned Parenthood Action Fund), and was co-founder of the reproductive rights organization Choice USA (now URGE). In 2004, she co-founded (along with Jane Fonda and Robin Morgan) the Women’s Media Center, a nonprofit progressive women’s media organization.

In 1999 Steinem was asked by the “CBS Evening News” whether technological advances were responsible for the advancement of women. Steinem discounted that. “There’s nothing automatic about political change, about liberation,” she said. “There’s no substitute for self-respect, banding together with other people, standing up for ourselves. Liberation does not come from outside. Power can’t be given to you. The process of taking it is part of the empowerment.”

In 2000, Steinem — who once thought marriage was demeaning — married David Bale, a human rights activist and the father of actor Christian Bale. “We shocked ourselves, both of us,” Steinem said. “Neither one of us thought that we wanted to get married.”

So, why did they? “It was something about me, I think. First of all, I was 66 years old. I was who I was. I no longer felt that I would have to give myself up in any way.”

But their life together ended three years later, when Bale died of lymphoma of the brain. “Maybe you never make peace with it,” she said. “But it taught me an enormous amount. Even if I knew what was going to happen, I would have chosen to go through it with him.”

She said that losing her husband made her understand the difference between sadness and depression. “Yes, because people would say to me, ‘Aren’t you depressed?’ And I realized that in depression, nothing matters. And in sadness, everything matters. It makes everything poignant.”

Steinem continued writing and lecturing into her 90s, as some of the topics introduced long ago by Ms. Magazine, such as sexual harassment in the workplace and domestic violence, took on new force with the rise of the #MeToo movement.

She co-produced a series of Emmy-nominated documentaries about violence against women around the world for Viceland, and co-produced and narrated an Emmy-winning HBO documentary, “Multiple Personalities: The Search for Deadly Memories.” She was also the subject of documentaries, including “Gloria: In Her Own Words,” and “The Glorias.”

In 2013, Steinem received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Obama, and in 2019, she received the Freedom Award from the National Civil Rights Museum.

Steinem wrote numerous books, including “An Unexpected Life,” “Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions,” “Revolution from Within: A Book of Self-Esteem,” “Marilyn: Norma Jean,” and “Doing Sixty and Seventy.” A 2014 collection of her essays was titled “As If Women Matter.” She was an editor of Houghton Mifflin’s “The Reader’s Companion to U.S. Women’s History.”

In her 2011 talk with Interview magazine, Steinem said that she felt regret for having wasted any time: “I continued for too long to do things that I already knew how to do, or to write stories that I was assigned instead of fighting for stories that I couldn’t get, or doing ones that I thought were important on my own. The wasting of time is the thing I worry about the most. Because time is all there is.”
