    2026-07-09T14:43:51.891Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/07/09/politics/plane-trump-air-force-one-security

    https://www.cnn.com/

    https://www.cnn.com/

Security concerns prompted Trump to depart Turkey on older plane while sending Qatari-donated jet ahead, officials say

    2026-07-09T14:43:51.891Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/07/09/politics/plane-trump-air-force-one-security

President Donald Trump’s decision to depart Turkey on an older plane while sending his new, Qatari-gifted jet ahead to England was driven at least in part by security concerns around the escalating conflict in Iran, according to four US officials.

Two of the officials said security personnel felt more comfortable with the president aboard the older vessel — which was built from scratch with the commander-in-chief’s safety in mind — rather than the plane that had recently been retrofitted after it was donated by Qatar.

While sources said there was no specific, new threat to Trump’s life, the president had mentioned the possibility of an assassination attempt from Iran during the NATO summit, following fresh US strikes on the country that shares a border with Turkey.

“I’m number one on the list for killing,” he said.

The New York Times previously reported on the security concerns. CNN has reached out to the White House for comment.

    https://www.cnn.com/

The specific reason why the older plane was considered a safer option than the newer one was not immediately clear. Two sources familiar with the matter said the newer plane did not possess the same capabilities to ensure its safety in international settings, though a third said it was equipped with many of the same features as the older plane.

“Threat assessments change all the time,” one source said.

Before Trump left the NATO summit in Turkey, officials sent the Qatari-gifted jet ahead to England’s Mildenhall Air Force Base. Trump said in a post on social media that the change in planes was simply to give US service members stationed at the base “a chance to tour the Aircraft.”

“Everybody is so excited, and we thought that they should be the first,” he wrote.

Trump then switched planes at a secure US airbase in the UK and offered mixed messages on the reason for the change of plans.

“There wasn’t a security concern, except we sent it a little early, same line going back. We sent it a little bit early, so that we could let them see,” he said.

But when asked why reporters aboard the plane were asked to lower their window shades on the ascent out of Ankara, Trump allowed that security concerns related to Iran could be a factor. He said Air Force One could be on a “dangerous plane because of the sleaze bags we have to deal with.”

“These are sick people, so I could see something like that,” he said, adding that he was unaware about the directive to press members to keep the shades down.

The new jet, a gift from Qatar estimated to be worth about $400 million, has long generated legal, ethical and national security questions, though the Air Force has said it “is safe, secure and equipped with the most advanced technologies necessary to meet the requirements of the presidential mission.”

    https://www.cnn.com/

One official, who declined to comment on the specific highly classified systems typically onboard Air Force One, noted the 747 gifted by Qatar was largely seen by the military and Secret Service as having been “rushed” into service.

By contrast, the official noted two new jets acquired as part of a deal Trump renegotiated during his first term have faced serious delays and aren’t expected to be ready until at least 2028. That’s partially due to the host of classified communication and defensive countermeasures that must be affixed, comprehensive design requirements by the military and the time required to train pilots on the unique aircraft.

“This was always considered a ‘bridge plane’ that the president would use until the other planes were fully loaded,” a different source said of the Qatari plane, comparing it to the pair of new Boeing jets that have been in the process of being modified for years. The Qatari jet, by comparison, took only roughly a year and a half to modify, which concerned some security officials at the time.

That source noted that in private conversations long before this trip, top White House officials had discussed using the older plane in potentially high-risk international travel, as opposed to the Qatari jet, if needed.

“The new plane is perfectly safe for the president to fly on,” the source said, but added that there are extra precautions needed when flying to high-risk areas internationally.

The older plane that took Trump out of Turkey, a heavily-modified Boeing 747-200, has highly specialized capabilities, including mid-air refueling.

CNN’s Josh Campbell contributed to this report.

Olympian David Hearn pleads not guilty to charges of damaging Reflecting Pool

    July 9, 2026 / 10:16 AM EDT / CBS News

    By Sophia Vlahakis

U.S. Olympic canoeist David Hearn pleaded not guilty to charges of damaging the Reflecting Pool at the base of the Washington Monument.

The 67-year-old, who competed in the 1992, 1996 and 2000 Olympics, was indicted July 2, after he was accused of ripping out a portion of the sealant from the bottom of the Reflecting Pool on June 19. He faces up to 10 years in prison, if convicted.

Hearn said he stopped by the pool during a 64-mile bike ride and was arrested after reaching down into the pool. He has said he was just interested in the material and briefly touched it.

Hearn’s attorneys, Mary Dohrmann, senior counsel at Washington Litigation Group, and Norm Eisen, co-founder and executive chair of Democracy Defenders Fund, requested a status hearing and trial date and advocated for “release with no restriction” in the meantime.

A status hearing has been set for Aug. 5.

The government asked for a “stay away, no contact order,” which Dohrmann opposed.

Hearn is “an upstanding citizen” and “does not need supervision of any kind,” Dohrmann argued. She added it would be “a waste of court resources to impose any restrictions.”

The judge agreed to release Hearn on his own recognizance.

The case “reflects the administration’s effort to shift blame for their own failures,” his lawyers said in a statement after Hearn’s indictment last week.

    https://www.foxnews.com/video/6399261789112

Trump’s voter ID bill catches unlikely break as McConnell remains sidelined

An unlikely reason has chipped away, for now, at Senate Republican resistance against President Donald Trump’s flagship election priority.

The Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act has hit brick wall after brick wall in the Senate, and has only twice mustered 50 votes. Still, Trump wants Republicans to pass it by any means necessary.

Republicans, however, aren’t unified behind it. One lawmaker, Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has routinely voted against the bill in its variety of iterations, earning the personal ire of Trump.

MCCONNELL FACES FRESH CALLS TO COME CLEAN ABOUT HEALTH ISSUES

“Mitch McConnell,” Trump told reporters last month. “He’s very disloyal to John Thune. You know, John Thune was a very good person for him. I mean, he’s a very loyal person, and Mitch McConnell’s against him almost all the time because he’s angry, I guess. Probably at me.”

McConnell has been absent from the Senate, which is currently in recess, for almost three weeks due to health issues. When he will return still remains unclear.

But without his resistance, that’s one less “no” vote that Republicans have to contend with.

REPUBLICAN SAYS TRUMP’S TOP ELECTION PRIORITY ‘DEAD’ IN SENATE AS GOP FRACTURES AHEAD OF MIDTERMS

    https://www.foxnews.com/video/6399261789112

Still, it doesn’t address the broader math problem in the Senate weighing down the chances of the SAVE America Act passing.

Senate Democrats are unified against it, meaning Trump and the SAVE America Act’s biggest proponents can’t break through the 60-vote filibuster, which has, in part, fueled the president’s demands to nuke the filibuster.

Senate Republicans don’t have the votes to do that, either.

“The only way you could get there is to undo or get rid of the legislative filibuster, and there aren’t even close to the votes here in the United States Senate in order to achieve that,” Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., said last month.

There is the talking filibuster, which Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, has pushed for months, which Republicans have yet to turn to, largely over concerns of floor time being eaten away and fractured unity leading to Democratic wins.

Then there is the budget reconciliation route, which Trump has pushed Congress to consider. While Senate Republicans aren’t leaping at the prospect, the House is moving full steam ahead.

GOP INFIGHTING OVER TRUMP’S VOTER ID BILL ERUPTS AS TOP SENATOR CALLS STRATEGY ‘FANTASY’

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., told Fox News’ Shannon Bream that he would move ahead with the reconciliation plan.

“We passed it three times in the House. We’re going to try one more time on a budget reconciliation bill, and I think that will be the way to get it through the Senate, and finally, to the president’s desk.”

Notably, though, House Republicans have not passed the version of the SAVE America Act that Trump desires, which would include a strict crackdown on mail-in balloting, a ban on transgender athletes in women’s sports and a ban on transgender surgical procedures for minors.

But even the bill’s biggest backers see reconciliation as a far-fetched option.

Lee last month told Fox News Digital that the SAVE America Act was “policy, it’s non-budgetary. Therefore, SAVE America itself is not eligible for consideration in a third reconciliation.”

There could be alterations, like giving states federal funding to start doling out enhanced REAL IDs with citizenship verification in a reconciliation package, while separately passing a voter ID bill.

However, Lee believed that there was “no evidence that there is a viable path to a third reconciliation bill.”

“I hope there is. I would love to be wrong on that. I want us to do that. I think we should do that. But the schedule that we’ve got, to my great disappointment, is not — it doesn’t accommodate any of it.”

The Army has completed its investigation into the deadly Iranian attack on U.S. forces in Kuwait earlier this year, sources told CBS News, and Gold Star families are expected to be briefed Thursday on its findings.

Six Americans were killed in the March 1 strike on a tactical operations center at the Port of Shuaiba in Kuwait, one of several U.S.-allied countries in the Persian Gulf region that faced intense Iranian missile and drone attacks after the U.S. and Israel launched Operation Epic Fury, starting the war with Iran. The strike was the deadliest attack on U.S. troops in the Iran War to-date.

U.S. Army Central and Third Army ordered the Pentagon probe “to determine the facts and circumstances” of the Iranian attack. But even before the review was underway, a CBS News investigation began shedding light on what several survivors of the attack described as “strategic failures” ahead of, during and after the strike.

One day after the deadly strike, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth described the Iranian drone as a “squirter” — suggesting that the drone managed to slip past the defenses of a fortified unit inside Kuwait.

In April, one of the injured soldiers told CBS News that “painting a picture that ‘one squeaked through’ is a falsehood. The soldier said the unit was “unprepared to provide any defense for itself. It was not a fortified position.”

More witnesses to the attack claimed in interviews that there were multiple warnings related to force protection ahead of the unit’s February move to the Port of Shuaiba position. Soldiers later told CBS News that military leaders had seen intelligence showing Iran was targeting their position in Kuwait. Those reports sparked an investigation from Senate Democrats.

“We moved closer to Iran, to a deeply unsafe area that was a known target,” one senior official told CBS News on condition of anonymity.

Asked to describe the degree of fortification of the unit, this official responded: “I mean, I would put it in the none category. From a drone defense capability … none.”

Other survivors recounted the chaotic moments in the moments after the drone slammed into their workspaces.

“This was a failure,” Maj. Stephen Ramsbottom said in an interview with CBS News. He said he believed Master Sgt. Nicole Amor could have survived her wounds had there been a doctor, a fixed aid station or more than one ambulance at the post.

The Pentagon has repeatedly pushed back on claims that the Army tried to downplay the incident.

In a post on X addressing prior CBS News reporting on the strike, Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said “every possible measure has been taken to safeguard our troops — at every level” and that “[t]he secure facility was fortified with 6-foot walls.”

Soldiers lodge complaints against unit commanders

CBS News has interviewed more than a dozen soldiers who were on the ground at Shuaiba, as well as to the families and the loved ones of those who were killed.

The Pentagon declined to answer CBS News’ questions about the scope of the inquiry, including if any individual leaders were a main focus.

Several soldiers told CBS News they hoped the investigation would include a performance review of the commanders of the Iowa-based 103rd Sustainment Command, whom they blamed for ordering the troops to Shuaiba weeks before Operation Epic Fury, despite what the soldiers believed were known concerns.

“I feel incredibly let down by the leadership of this unit,” one soldier, speaking on condition of anonymity because of rigid media restrictions within the military, told CBS News.

“We knew what things were predetermined targets — not just which bases but specifically which locations on certain bases,” another soldier recounted. Asked if Shuaiba was on that list, the soldier said: “Yes, definitely.”

A complaint one unit member sent to the Army Inspector General, shared with CBS News, said the leadership “disregarded” the intelligence briefings and “yelled” at those who questioned the deployment to Shuaiba.

CBS News has reached out to the Pentagon and to the 103rd Sustainment Command for comment.
