当然, transcript(听证会记录)会公开,”加西亚告诉记者。

Former Obama White House attorney says ‘it was a mistake’ to deal with Epstein and she regrets it

    2026-07-15T16:32:38.962Z / CNN

Former Obama White House counsel Kathy Ruemmler said she regrets interacting with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and believes now it was a mistake, according to opening remarks she delivered to House committee investigators as part of a closed-door interview.

“If I knew then what I know now about who Epstein really was, I never would have accepted an initial meeting with him. It was a mistake to deal with him, and I regret it,” Ruemmler said, according to prepared remarks provided to CNN. “But many people assume that given everything we know now about Epstein, everyone who dealt with him before his 2019 indictment must have known everything then. In my case, that assumption is completely wrong.”

Ruemmler was called to testify voluntarily by the Republican-led House Oversight Committee for a closed-door interview as part of the congressional probe into Epstein after numerous news stories scrutinized her ties to the disgraced financier. Reporting from CNN’s KFILE detailed the extent of her relationship with Epstein, including that she was among a small group of advisers to help him ward off legal and reputational risk during the final years of his life.

Ruemmler did not specifically address how she sought to help Epstein protect his reputation in her opening remarks but did say, “even though I wasn’t his lawyer, he sought my advice from time to time, as many people do. I was friendly with him in that context, and I dealt with him in my ordinary course — casually, informally, and sometimes irreverently.” She also said that Epstein was never her client.

She said that she first met Epstein in 2014 — and explained how she came to learn about how Epstein pled guilty in 2008 to charges that included the solicitation of a minor for prostitution along with other offenses and why she continued to engage with him.

“Epstein told me that, while a small number of the women he had solicited for prostitution turned out to be under the age of consent, he had not known that any of them were underage. Epstein appeared to be quite open about the conduct leading to his conviction, or so he led me to believe. He expressed remorse, embarrassment, and regret for his conduct, which he described as paying money for sex to women he believed to be over the age of 18,” Ruemmler said in her opening statement.

“Notwithstanding his conviction, by the time I met him, he had active relationships with an extensive group of respected professionals in business, academia, politics, and the arts. And given the nature of my law practice, I routinely dealt with compromised or controversial people, including those facing criminal or other allegations of wrongdoing,” she said, while adding that she “at no time” endorsed or excused the conduct to which Epstein pled guilty.

Ruemmler called Epstein a “masterful liar” — and also said that she “did not see any evidence of ongoing criminal conduct or misconduct of any kind by Epstein.”

She said that, “if I had seen or heard any evidence suggesting that he was abusing women or girls, I would have immediately reported him to law enforcement.”

Ahead of the interview, Ruemmler told CNN, “I will answer any questions that they think will help their inquiry. So, again, I’m looking forward to meeting with the committee members today.”

House Oversight Chair James Comer said prior to the start of the interview, “she’s a very powerful person that was probably more involved in working with him to rehabilitate his image, which I would argue has made it more difficult for him to be held accountable. So, very concerning. We want to know what she knew and we have a lot of questions about the extent of their relationship.”

The top Democrat on the panel, Rep. Robert Garcia, echoed, “the fact that she continued to engage, give advice, was clearly a friend, and in fact was one of the folks that he was talking to consistently in the last phase of his life I think is really significant. We’ve said from day one that we don’t care if someone is a Republican or a Democrat or what the relationship is, we want truth and answers, and I think that’s what we’ll get throughout the day today.”

As the interview was ongoing, Garcia questioned Ruemmler’s credibility and said it was “problematic” for Republicans to allow her to testify without forcing her to be under oath.

“I think it is difficult to see how she is being completely truthful in there with the answers that she is giving the committee. And the transcript of course will come out,” Garcia told reporters

In February, Ruemmler announced she would resign by June 30 from her job as chief legal officer at Goldman Sachs amid fallout from the Justice Department’s release of Epstein documents.

But Democrats have pressed Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon over his reported effort to retain the bank’s top lawyer months after she announced she would resign.

The Justice Department’s release of millions of pages of Epstein documents provided fresh details about the relationship between the Ruemmler and Epstein.

Amid the hundreds of email exchanges reviewed by CNN that discuss Epstein’s legal battles and reputational problems, there are other more personal communications between the two, including plans for a proposed trip to Epstein’s island and gifts he’d given her.

In some of their back-and-forth messages, Ruemmler discussed personal matters in her life, expressed gratitude for their “friendship,” and concluded her messages with “xo” and “xoxo.”

“There has been much media attention around my email communications with Epstein and gifts that he gave me. Many of my emails with Epstein have been taken out of context or do not mean what some have speculated or suggested. With that said, given what I now know about him, I wish I had never dealt with him at all, much less emailed with him,” Ruemmler said in her opening remarks.

On the gifts specifically, Ruemmer said, “I didn’t ask for them, didn’t need them, and didn’t view them as particularly personal or consequential. I accepted them graciously, as I saw no reason not to. But the gifts weren’t important to me, and I declined to accept some of them. In any event, nothing he gave me caused me to deal with him any differently than I otherwise would have.”

A batch of documents released by the Justice Department on January 30 showed how Ruemmler advised Epstein on lawsuits brought by his accusers and coordinated responses to journalists, including regarding a proposed network TV interview with a victim that never aired.

According to the files, Ruemmler at one point inquired about taking a trip to Epstein’s private island.

In January 2017, Ruemmler asked Epstein whether she could take a “day trip” to the island while she was traveling in the Caribbean. Later that year, after Hurricane Irma severely damaged the island, Ruemmler mused about traveling to the island to help Epstein clean up.

A Goldman Sachs spokesperson previously said Ruemmler never visited the island.

Ruemmler left the Obama White House in 2014 and went to work for Latham & Watkins as head of its white-collar defense group. The firm previously told CNN that Epstein was never a client. In 2020, Ruemmler joined Goldman Sachs and was later promoted to become the firm’s chief legal officer.

In a statement to CNN in December, she said, “I knew Jeffrey Epstein in a professional capacity when I served as head of the white collar defense group at Latham & Watkins, and he was a business referral source. I did not represent him and was not compensated by him. I was one of a number of lawyers Epstein informally reached out to for advice.”

Given that Ruemmler is appearing voluntarily, she will not be sworn in under oath. She will be reminded at the start of the interview, however, that making false statements to Congress is subject to criminal prosecution. Ruemmler is the panel’s 18th witness to appear for an interview as apart of the ongoing Epstein probe.

NYPD officer who saved woman on Brooklyn Bridge says rescue happened on his 3rd day with elite unit

    July 15, 2026 / 3:30 PM EDT / CBS News
    By Anna Schecter

An officer who saved a woman’s life on the Brooklyn Bridge last week said the rescue happened on just his third day on the job with the New York Police Department’s elite Emergency Service Unit, which takes on some of the most dangerous rescues.

The incident happened on July 8 when a call came in for a person in distress on top of the Brooklyn Bridge, according to the NYPD. After an hour of compassionate negotiation approximately 200 feet above the East River, Officer Cristian Yepes wrapped his arms around the woman and was able to bring her to safety.

“I got you, I promise,” Yepes is heard telling the woman on body camera video.

“The care, courage, and compassion these officers showed was just extraordinary,” Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said in a statement on social media.

The rescue was one of three by the same unit within one week.

“This is what I’ve been training for, this is what I’ve prepared for,” Yepes said in an interview. “And my ultimate goal is to make sure everyone’s safe.”

Yepes was a patrol officer for seven years. He was fresh off the eight months of intensive training required to join the elite unit, and still it was his humanity that helped clinch the rescue.

“Yeah, we have the uniform. Yes, we’re police officers,” he said, “but we’re just human at the end of the day.”

Democratic debate to replace Platner in Maine will have 8 candidates

    • Summary
    • News Center Maine had initially limited Thursday’s 90-minute debate to four candidates
    • Nine Democrats are seeking the nomination before the party’s July 25 convention in Bangor
    • Candidates must file by 5 p.m. Wednesday and submit 500 signatures by Monday

PORTLAND, Maine, July 15 (Reuters) – The news station hosting a Democratic U.S. Senate debate in Maine on Thursday has agreed to allow eight declared candidates on stage, yielding to ‌campaigns’ calls for broader participation after initially omitting half the field.

“News Center Maine reached out to my team to let us know that all announced candidates will now be invited to participate in Thursday’s debate,” candidate Dan Kleban, co-founder of Maine Beer Company, said in a social media post late on Tuesday. “I have accepted the invitation and am looking forward to having an exchange of ideas with the other candidates.”

The Reuters Daily Briefing newsletter provides all the news you need to start your day. Sign up here.

The additions are a boon for Troy Jackson, the former Maine Senate president who publicly called on News Center Maine to allow every declared candidate to participate in the 90-minute debate. Jackson’s campaign said the host station invited only candidates who received at least 20% of the vote in their primary races last month.

Nine Democrats are vying to replace Graham Platner as the party’s nominee to take on Republican Senator Susan Collins in November. Only four met the original threshold: Jackson, Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, former Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention Director Nirav Shah and ex-congressional aide Jordan Wood.

Collins is the only Republican incumbent up for reelection in a state that Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris won in 2024. Republicans hold a 53-47 majority in the Senate, where flipping Maine is crucial to Democrats’ path to regaining control of the chamber.

Social worker Paige Loud and former longtime political aide David Costello finished under the 20% threshold in their respective races. But Kleban, former state Representative Elizabeth Dickerson and Ashley Webb, a transgender and intersex woman, were not ‌on the ballot last month.

News Center Maine said it invited all candidates who had filed to run by close of business on Tuesday, meaning Webb will not participate.

“The fact that some candidates in this race weren’t running for completely different offices last month shouldn’t prevent us from taking the debate stage,” Kleban had said.

Loud’s campaign initially told Reuters that every candidate who filed their paperwork should be invited. In a social media post late on Tuesday, she credited “conversations with the station and pressure” from campaigns for widening the field.

    PLATNER’S COLLAPSE SPARKS SCRAMBLE

As Platner was considering suspending his campaign last week, prospective candidates called for an open, fair and transparent process to replace him. The oysterman’s campaign collapsed after sexual assault allegations, which he denies, prompting the Maine Democratic Party to select a new nominee.

The party has said the nominee will be selected at a July 25 convention in Bangor.

“I’m ready to take the stage Thursday and make my case to Mainers,” Jackson said in a statement on Tuesday. “Every other candidate who has registered for the party’s nominating process should have the same opportunity to make their case to delegates and voters.”

Candidates have until 5 p.m. on Wednesday to file their intent to seek the nomination and must collect 500 signatures by Monday, including at least 50 from eight counties. At the convention, hundreds of delegates will vote until a candidate reaches a majority. The top five candidates will advance to the second round, and the lowest vote getter will be eliminated in each subsequent round.

Key House Democrats voice support for amendment to cancel Israel defense funding

    July 15, 2026 at 12:45 p.m. EDT / The Washington Post

The announcements reflect a growing disconnect between the Democratic establishment, with its long-standing support for the U.S. ally, and the party’s left wing.

Some key House Democrats on Wednesday announced that they will vote to cut off military aid to Israel for the next fiscal year, in a sign of the growing disconnect between the Democratic establishment, with its long-standing support for the U.S. ally, and the party’s left wing.

In a statement, House Minority Whip Katherine Clark (Massachusetts), the No. 2 House Democrat, said she will vote in favor later Wednesday of an amendment introduced by Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Kentucky) to an appropriations package for the State Department.

“It is clear that the status quo is not tenable,” Clark said. “We should not provide a blank check for military aid to any country that does not comply with U.S. law, interests, and values. The Netanyahu government has failed to meet that standard.”

Like Clark, Reps. Greg Casar (D-Texas) and Robert Garcia (D-California) have indicated they will also support Massie’s amendment. In a letter obtained by The Washington Post, Casar, the chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, urged fellow members to vote for the measure. And Garcia, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, said in a statement that Netanyahu “is a corrupt authoritarian who should face criminal courts — not receive billions more for weapons.”

Massie’s amendment is largely symbolic and, despite growing Democratic support, is likely to fail in the Republican-led House. Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-New York) has said he will vote against it.

Trump flies Marine One from a new location: the Ellipse

    By Dan Diamond

President Donald Trump on Wednesday afternoon kicked off his new process for flying Marine One: His motorcade drove to the Ellipse, a park just south of the White House, to board the presidential helicopter.

The change adds layers of coordination and security measures to how presidents have traditionally boarded Marine One — by walking out of the White House and entering the helicopter on the mansion’s South Lawn. But the lawn has been closed to helicopters since May, when Trump began constructing an arena for a UFC cage match.

Contractors are building a new permanent helipad on the lawn that Trump wants to finish by mid-September, ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s expected visit.

The Washington Post reported Tuesday that the president for now will use a temporary landing zone in the Ellipse, a public park that is also part of the White House grounds.

Trump on Wednesday departed for an event at the United States Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

    https://news-multimedia-1393112320.cos.ap-guangzhou.myqcloud.com/foreman-1.jpg

Son of couple on hunger strike in Iran prison “desperately worried” as stepdad’s sentence extended

    July 15, 2026 / 12:52 PM EDT / CBS News

London— A British man jailed in Iran on espionage charges that officials call baseless has had his decade-long prison sentence extended by a further two years, his family said Wednesday, as he and his partner grow weak from an ongoing two-month hunger strike.

Craig Foreman, 52, was arrested in Iran with his wife Lindsay, 53, in January 2025 on a motorcycle trip from Europe to Asia. In February, 10 days before the U.S. and Israel launched joint attacks on Iran, sparking the ongoing war, they were charged with espionage and sentenced to 10 years in prison by a judge who is under U.S., U.K. and European Union sanctions for holding “show trials.”

They have been imprisoned for more than 18 months, most of which they are known to have spent in Tehran’s notorious Evin prison.

Joe Bennett, Lindsay’s son and the family’s spokesperson, said in a statement Wednesday that they had received “extremely concerning reports” that his stepfather Craig’s sentence had been increased for speaking to the media.

“We understand he was told he was being taken to see his lawyer but was instead brought before a judge and informed of the additional sentence,” said Bennett. “Despite requests, he was allowed no lawyer, no translator and no opportunity to defend himself.”

“We didn’t think we could be any more shocked at their appalling treatment,” said Bennett, “but in this case we are absolutely flabbergasted.”

A spokesperson for the British Foreign Office told CBS News on Wednesday that the government was “urgently following up with the Iranian authorities about the reported increased sentence.”

    “A son who’s desperately worried”

Craig Foreman began his hunger strike on May 9 and Lindsay joined him on May 18, according to the family. It is their second such protest, having carried out a previous hunger strike in November 2025.

“Both have lost a significant amount of weight and their health continues to deteriorate,” according to the statement, which adds that a letter written by loved ones asking the couple to drop their protest and start eating again has been prevented from reaching them in prison.

“Some days you wake up feeling hopeful,” Bennett told CBS News on Wednesday. “Other days you receive news like Craig’s received a two-year sentence, and it feels like the floor disappears beneath you again.”

“My life has become a cycle of speaking to the government, to lawyers, journalists, MPs, and at the same time, I’m a son who’s desperately worried about his mum and Craig,” he said.

“The hardest part of it all is the uncertainty,” added Bennett. “Every phone call makes you wonder if it’s going to be good news or bad news, and you never really know how to switch off.”

The Foremans had been allowed to call their family after initially being denied calls for the first seven months of their sentences, but since May they have again been cut off, according to the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), which says they are also being denied adequate medical care. The organization says Craig has lost 35 pounds and Lindsay, who is also suffering dizzy spells and body tremors, has lost 30.

The couple has vehemently denied Iranian authorities’ spying allegations. In April, British lawmaker Hamish Falconer, who is also an under-secretary in the Foreign Office, said the Foremans were “innocent tourists.”

Bennett says the family has been buffeted by the relentless twists and turns of the Iran war, knowing Craig and Lindsay could be inadvertently hit by U.S. or Israeli strikes on the country.

“When military action escalates, you know, we don’t know how my mum and Craig are,” he told CBS News.

In June 2025, after the Foremans were due to be moved to Evin prison, Israeli forces bombed the facility. Bennett and his family only found out a month later they had not yet been transferred.

Having been held at separate prisons, they were eventually both moved to Evin in October 2025.

“Every headline that you see brings another wave of us asking ourselves, ‘Are they safe?’”

    “Asking for mercy”

In June, two United Nations experts called on Iran to free the Foremans.

“Lindsay and Craig Foreman should not be in prison,” U.N. special rapporteurs Mai Sato and Dr. Alice Jill Edwards said, having written to Iranian authorities in April. “They appear to have been wrongfully detained, prosecuted on highly questionable grounds, and sentenced after proceedings that failed to meet basic fair trial guarantees.”

The British government, which has advised against all travel to Iran since May 2022, previously called the decade-long sentence “completely appalling and totally unjustifiable.”

The family welcomed an announcement this week that the U.K. government had appointed its first envoy to support British nationals detained in complex cases overseas. They’re pushing for the U.K. to formally recognize the couple’s case as arbitrary detention.

Asked what he thought it would take to bring them home, Bennett replied said it would require “courage” and “political will.”

If the British government “makes these cases a genuine priority, people do come home. You see that with Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, Anoosheh Ashoori and others,” he said, referring to Britons held in Iran who were released in 2022.

“Every case is different, but history shows that persistence, international cooperation and determined engagement, they all matter,” he said. “We are asking, with everything we have, for them to be shown mercy and allowed to come home.”

The United States Department Of Justice

July 15 (Reuters) – The U.S. Department of Justice on Wednesday said it was prohibited by law from releasing unredacted files on Jeffrey Epstein requested by New Mexico, escalating a feud between the nation’s top legal agency and state officials investigating the late sex offender.

It came after New Mexico Attorney General Raul Torrez released a letter on Tuesday accusing the DOJ of deliberately obstructing the state’s criminal probe of Epstein by failing to hand over the files.

“Federal law, court orders, and privacy protections for victims and witnesses do not allow us to release millions of unredacted documents,” a U.S. Justice Department spokesperson said in a statement. “We will continue to follow federal law and the court orders that are in place.”

In February, the Democratic-run state re-opened an investigation into activities at Epstein’s former ranch, south of the capital Santa Fe, where he is accused of abusing women and girls for nearly three decades.

In response to the state’s request that month for unredacted files, Torrez said the U.S. Attorney’s Office for New Mexico on July ‌10 provided 31 pages of documents that had already been made public, contained redacted material that was unusable or were photocopies of local news stories.

“It is a reflection of a deliberate choice not to cooperate,” Torrez wrote in the Tuesday letter. His office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Wednesday.

New Mexico’s state legislature is running a parallel investigation — last month, it subpoenaed U.S. attorneys’ offices in three states and the U.S. Virgin Islands for information on whether and why they chose not to prosecute Epstein.

The legislature’s “Truth Commission” is expected to release an interim report this month. Torrez has yet to announce any findings.

Pressure from victims and advocates on the DOJ to release the Epstein files in their entirety has dogged President Donald Trump, who has said the country should move on.
