Here’s the projected Social Security COLA for 2027, according to AARP

    September 11, 2026 11:24 AM EDT / CBS News

Stubbornly hot inflation in August could push up the 2027 cost-of-living adjustment for Social Security recipients, according to a new estimate from the AARP.

The 2027 COLA is now projected at 3.6%, based on the August Consumer Price Index figures released on Wednesday, according to the advocacy group. AARP had forecast a 3.5% increase a month ago.

Other groups are forecasting a slightly lower COLA, with the Senior Citizens League, an advocacy group for older Americans, projecting a 3.5% adjustment, down from its prior estimate of 3.6%.

A benefit increase of 3.6% would represent the biggest annual adjustment in Social Security payments since 2023. The program’s more than 70 million recipients rely on the annual cost-of-living adjustment to ensure their benefits keep up with inflation, although some critics say the measure has failed to offset the price pressures facing older Americans and people with disabilities, including rising healthcare costs.

The average retired worker received $2,071 a month in Social Security benefits as of January, according to the Social Security Administration. That means a 3.6% COLA would increase the average monthly benefit by about $75, raising it to roughly $2,146 a month at the start of 2027.

The official COLA won’t be announced until next month, when the Social Security Administration will calculate next year’s inflation adjustment based on the July, August and September inflation data.

The September CPI report will be released on Oct. 14, with the Social Security Administration set to announce the 2027 COLA the same day.

In Cary, North Carolina, Vanessa Minter was among the first people on the ground to learn about the terror unfolding in the air on Sept. 11, 2001.

Minter, an American Airlines reservations agent, was on the other end of a phone call with flight attendant Betty Ong, who was sitting in the back galley of hijacked American Airlines Flight 11, which had departed Boston for Los Angeles.

“She said, ‘I think we’re being hijacked,’” Minter recalled in an interview with “CBS Mornings.”

Minter said she knew the threat was real from the tone of Ong’s voice.

“I had to ask myself, could I have done that? Because she was literally a pillar. She knew what she was doing. She knew what information we needed, and she was all business,” Minter explained. Ong relayed critical information during the call that contributed to the FAA’s decision to close U.S. airspace.

She would be the last person Ong spoke with before the plane crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Minter recalled some of Ong’s final words during their conversation: “Pray for us.”

“I was the last person that she spoke to, and I couldn’t make it better. I couldn’t even help,” Minter said.

Three weeks after the Sept. 11 attacks, Minter penned a letter to Ong’s family in California. She described Ong’s bravery and concern for passengers and their safety.

“I want you to know that she will always be in my heart and my prayers as I go through life,” she wrote.

The letter was given to Ong’s older brother Harry, who is now 77 and a grandfather of five. Harry said that was the first time the family learned about the midair call.

“When we listened to it, we were so proud of Betty,” Harry said.

Every month, Harry visits a memorial for Ong at Cypress Lawn Memorial Park in Colma, California — just outside of San Francisco — where she has a niche and a grave. Crews recovered a bone fragment with her DNA two blocks from Ground Zero in 2002.

“Betty was a hero, but not — not the fact that she’s the only hero, right? We envelope almost 3,000 people who have perished that day, and we have to just remember them and to say that they’re all heroes, and many, many more,” Harry said.

For 25 years, Minter never made the journey out west to meet Ong’s family — until now.

She recently reunited with Harry at Ong’s memorial. Afterward, he invited her to his home, where he shared some of the family’s keepsakes, including Ong’s ID tags and a letter from President Bush. She was also able to meet Ong’s mother, Gum, who is 99 years old.

“You have such a brave daughter. I feel like I’m a member of this family already,” Minter told Gum.

    广告报告![image_1]

US consumer inflation picks up in August

    • Summary
    • Consumer Price Index increases 0.4% in August as expected
    • Excluding food and energy CPI rises 0.3%, with airline fares maintaining upward trend
    • Report likely to result in the Federal Reserve raising interest rates next week, financial markets bet

WASHINGTON, Sept 11 (Reuters) – U.S. consumer prices accelerated in August, while a key measure of underlying inflation posted its largest increase in four months, reinforcing expectations that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates next week.

The Labor Department’s Consumer Price Index report on Friday followed strong readings in several components of the Producer Price ‌Index released on Thursday that feed into the Personal Consumption Expenditures price indexes, the inflation measures the U.S. central bank tracks for its 2% target. Soon after the CPI data was published, financial markets priced in a roughly 91% chance of a rate hike next week, up from about 72% on Thursday, CME’s FedWatch tool showed.

“It wasn’t as hot as yesterday’s PPI, but today’s CPI left the Fed with less room to maneuver as it tries to maintain its inflation-fighting credentials,” said Ellen Zentner, chief economic strategist at Morgan Stanley Wealth Management.

The Consumer Price Index increased 0.4% last month after edging up 0.1% in July, the Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics said. In the 12 months through August, consumer inflation advanced 3.4% after rising by the same margin in July. The rise in the CPI was in line with economists’ expectations.

A 3.9% jump in gasoline prices after two straight monthly declines accounted for more than a third of the increase in the CPI over the month. Other motor fuels, which include diesel, surged 9.6%. Oil prices have climbed back above $100 a barrel, while diesel prices are at record highs, suggesting inflation was set to remain elevated and broaden out in the coming months.

There was some respite for consumers at the supermarket. Food prices edged up 0.1% for a second straight month. Grocery prices were unchanged amid muted increases in the prices of meat and fish. Fruit and vegetable prices fell 0.4% over the month, weighed down by a 6.2% drop in the cost of lettuce because of a Cyclospora outbreak.

But egg prices increased 2.9%, while nonalcoholic beverages cost more as did dairy and related products. With diesel prices at a record high, consumers could soon face higher prices at the supermarket as nearly all the goods are transported by road, economists warned. Some saw price pressures persisting because of tariffs on imports, most recently against Canada, one of the United States’ top trade partners.

Frustration over higher prices, especially for gasoline and food, has led to a sharp erosion in President Donald Trump’s approval ratings and could cost his Republican party control of the U.S. Congress in the November midterm elections.

CORE INFLATION HIGHER OVER THE MONTH

Excluding the volatile food and energy components, the CPI rose 0.3% last month, the largest increase since April. That was above economists’ expectations for a second straight month of a 0.2% gain. The so-called core CPI increased 2.4% year-on-year in August after rising 2.5% in July. Core CPI inflation was over the month driven by a 2.7% increase in airline fares amid rising jet fuel costs.

There were also solid increases in the prices of education, communication as well as used cars and trucks. Rents rose 0.2% while the cost of hotel and motel rooms rebounded 2.4%. But healthcare costs eased while prices for prescription medication were unchanged. The cost of motor vehicle insurance fell 0.8% while apparel prices were unchanged.

With the CPI and PPI data in hand, economists’ estimates for August’s core PCE price index converged around a 0.28% increase, which would round up to 0.3%. Core PCE inflation rose 0.2% in July. Estimates for the year-on-year increase in core PCE inflation ranged from 3.2% to 3.3%. Core PCE inflation advanced 3.3% in the 12 months through July.

The August PCE inflation report will include changes to the methodology, which some economists say could lower the core inflation rate by a couple of basis points. The Fed’s benchmark overnight interest rate is currently in a 3.50%-3.75% range.

The dollar was little changed against a basket of currencies. U.S. Treasury yields initially rose after the inflation data before pulling back.

The odds of a rate increase had diminished following comments by Fed Governor Christopher Waller at a Reuters NEXT Newsmaker event last week that he was inclined to argue in favor of keeping rates steady if data confirmed inflation pressures were cooling. Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh last month said the central bank will “have work to do” if policymakers don’t get the confidence they need that inflation is heading down to 2%.

But Trump is pressuring the Fed to cut rates, posting on social media last week “LOWER THE RATE OR I’LL STOP TRADING WITH COUNTRIES WITH WHICH WE HAVE A DEFICIT.” Economists have blamed what they called political intimidation for the surge in yields on long-term U.S. government bonds. Some expected the Fed to tighten policy next Wednesday to underscore its independence.

Lindsay Clancy juror says Patrick Clancy’s testimony swayed her decision, reveals more about lone holdout

    September 11, 2026 / 9:42 AM EDT / CBS News

    By Mark Osborne

Paula Devlin, a juror in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial, said it was Clancy’s ex-husband’s testimony that might have swayed her the most, while the lone holdout in the jury might have felt attacked and refused to change his vote for that reason.

In an interview with “CBS Mornings” co-host Gayle King on Friday, Devlin said that when they began deliberating, the jurors were more split, with eight saying Clancy was not responsible, two undecided, and two who said guilty of murder.

The jury was made up of nine women and three men. Devlin said the ages ranged from 22 to about 70, and there was only one member who was a minority, a Black male in his 30s who was also the lone holdout.

“I was leaning towards not responsible from all the evidence I had heard,” Devlin told King. “And I had certain things I wanted to look at when we got into deliberation. Everything that we talked about and every point that everybody in the room made just kind of reinforced that more and more.”

Clancy was charged with murdering her three young children — 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson and 8-month-old Callan — at their home in Duxbury, Massachusetts, on Jan. 24, 2023. Her attorneys argued she was not criminally responsible because she was overmedicated and suffering from postpartum psychosis. Prosecutors argued Clancy planned it and knew right from wrong.

The highly publicized trial ended in a mistrial last Friday after the jurors could not come to a unanimous verdict after more than seven days of deliberation.

Several jurors, including Devlin, have said the jury was divided 11 to 1 in favor of finding Clancy not responsible.

She said they spent several days seeing if they could convince the holdout, who believed Clancy should be found guilty of murder, to come to their side, but he would not budge.

“We all worked together. And I don’t know if it was to convince him to start with,” Devlin told King. “We all worked together to convince ourselves once we got to that point where it was 10 to 2. I felt very bad for them because they felt attacked. And there is no way to not do that.”

“Even in normal conversation, when it is pointed at you and you have to defend yourself, it’s a hard thing to do,” she added. “We don’t have to always do that.”

Devlin said two witnesses in particular solidified her decision on the verdict: Dr. Phillip Resnick, a forensic psychiatrist, and Patrick Clancy, Lindsay’s husband at the time of the murders and the one who found the children dead after Lindsay attempted suicide.

“I think Dr. Resnick, his testimony about altruistic filicide was really impactful,” Devlin said, referring to the psychological condition when a parent believes killing their children is best for them. “All throughout the trial, we had all the witnesses, there had been nothing but good said about Lindsay and how amazing of a mother she was, how much she loved her children.”

“We saw that in every picture that was taken in the house on the night that this happened,” she continued. “Everywhere you looked, there was just love. There was a big sign that said, ‘It’s a wonderful life.’ There wasn’t anything that says she wasn’t that. And then to hear somebody talking about a real reason why all of a sudden this could happen, that was really impactful.”

Devlin told King that the emotional testimony of Patrick Clancy, Lindsay’s now ex-husband, was particularly impactful.

“I think the prosecution tried to nudge Patrick to say something derogatory and he wouldn’t,” Devlin said. “And that was very impactful, even after all this time and even after knowing this happened and losing his three children, he still couldn’t say anything really bad about her.”

Clancy’s lawyer, Kevin Reddington, on Thursday filed a motion for the mistrial to be thrown out and for Clancy to be acquitted in the case. Reddington told “CBS Mornings” earlier this week he decided to file the motion after hearing from several jurors about how the holdout was not properly following procedures.

“I would defend that person’s right to be a holdout for a month. That’s what the system is about,” Reddington told “CBS Mornings” on Wednesday. “But when the forelady indicated clearly and unequivocally in the jury question that this person had doubt, reasonable doubt, as we know now, and just refused to listen to the judge’s instruction on the law, that’s when I was upset, because that’s why I used the expressions and the terms I did. It just wasn’t right.”

Devlin said she was not in favor of the case being thrown out even though she thinks Clancy was not guilty by reason of insanity. She said justice would be for Clancy to “get the help she needs,” as opposed to walking free if Reddington’s appeal is successful.

“I don’t feel good about that,” she said about the filing, which experts told CBS News is a long shot. “Part of the reason why we wanted ‘not responsible’ was that everybody wants justice for the children.”

“Those children never left that room. They’ve never left our hearts. And that was a way to get justice for those children. This wouldn’t have happened if Lindsay didn’t get lost in the system and failed by the system,” she said.

The motion to dismiss will be heard on Sept. 29 at a previously scheduled status hearing in the case.

The district attorney has not said whether he plans to refile the case, while Reddington also sounded amenable to a plea deal that would include lesser charges for Clancy. However, he said that it is up to the district attorney, Tim Cruz.

9/11, 25 years on: the Reuters reporter who was with George W. Bush that morning

    2026-09-11 13:36:00 UTC / Reuters

In the latest edition of Reporter’s Notebook, White House correspondent Steve Holland recounts his experience covering the attack, the challenges of verifying information on the fly, and what’s stayed with him since.

When White House correspondent Steve Holland followed President George W. Bush to Sarasota, Florida, on the eve of September 11, 2001, he expected to cover a routine education event.

Instead, he found himself stranded as the president was whisked back to Washington amid what would later become the deadliest attack on U.S. soil since Pearl Harbor. Days later, he would be accompanying the president to Ground Zero.

In a recent conversation marking the 25th anniversary of September 11, Holland reflects on his experience that day and in its aftermath, the challenges of reporting the attack in real time, and what has stayed with him since.

This conversation has been edited and condensed for clarity.

You were covering George W. Bush on September 11, 2001, as Reuters’ White House correspondent. Can you walk us through what you remember of that day?

Bush had only been in office for about eight months. He was focused on domestic policies — education being one of them — and he was going on a trip down to Sarasota, Florida. I flew on Air Force One down there on September 10, 2001, and we got prepared for an education event the next day.

In the pre-dawn hours of September 11, I was with Bush as he went jogging around this golf course in Florida. When he was done with that, I swapped out with my colleague Arshad Mohammed and went back to the filing center. We had TVs on, of course, and there was one plane sticking out of one of the World Trade Center towers. The first plane we thought might have been a mistake or some terrible accident. But as we watched the second plane hit, we thought, okay, this is an attack.

George W. Bush was at the Emma E. Booker School reading a book to school children when his chief of staff, Andrew Card, whispered in his ear, “A second plane hit the World Trade Center; America’s under attack.” There are these iconic photos of Bush with that shocked look on his face when he was told.

My colleague Arshad shouted out a question about the attacks. I don’t think he got an answer to that, but very quickly Bush went into a holding room and got a briefing about what had happened. He made a statement calling this “a national tragedy”; it was a low-key statement at that point because he wasn’t aware of the scale of the attacks. But very quickly they made the decision to get him out of there because reports were coming in of not just the two (attacks) at the World Trade Center, but a plane had hit the Pentagon in Washington. A fourth plane was hijacked and believed to be headed to the Capitol.

Soon after that, the plane crashed into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Bush immediately flew to Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana, where he got a briefing. The White House decided to cut the press pool in half, so my colleague Arshad was left off the plane. The president then flew on to Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska, where they had this underground bunker.

Back in Sarasota, the members of the press corps who weren’t with the president were stranded. We went to the airport to try to fly back and were told, “No, all air travel is grounded.” We spent the night thinking things would improve the next day. They did not, so we organized charter buses to take us back to Washington. The one I was on took 14 hours to drive from Sarasota back to D.C., and the first view we saw of the area was the Pentagon with the smoking gash through it.

When that plane went down in Shanksville, panic gripped Washington. The Secret Service ordered the White House evacuated. Everybody was basically running for their lives. The plume of smoke from the Pentagon wafted over the city, and it led to all these rumors that a car bomb went off. It was unlike anything we’d ever seen — the worst attack on U.S. soil since Pearl Harbor in 1941.

Yeah, that was a tough day.

What challenges did you face covering the event 25 years ago, without mobile phones and laptops?

We had cell phones, but they weren’t as widely used as they are now. Quite often we would dictate stories to the desk, the newsroom’s central operational and editorial hub that handles, verifies, and packages incoming stories pre-publication. Dictation of a story is kind of a lost art — it’s much easier to use a laptop and file stories now. I remember filing some notes and quotes by phone. Once we got through the initial rush there and Bush had left, the desk in Washington took over, so we became marooned and not much use to anybody. The story had left us, basically, and that was kind of an odd place to be. Our primary function is to cover the president, he’s not with us. What are we going to do? So we were glad to get back to Washington.

How did you go about verifying information in real time?

I remember we picked up an AP report about a car bomb exploding near the State Department that turned out to be wrong. We attributed it to AP, of course, but in the rush to get stuff out, there was no verification really. We later saw that it was not true, and we put that out, but that was very difficult.

We relied on our eyeballs. What we saw was what we reported, but it was hard to control the flow of some of these other reports that we weren’t quite sure were true. In an emergency like that, you can’t always take the time to check it out. That’s the hazard here.

Thank goodness we now have the fact checkers. We need them more than ever!

What was the immediate aftermath like?

Washington was an armed camp at that point. There was a huge military presence. All the security guards had heavy assault weapons; helicopters were flying overhead. Commercial air travel completely shut down. This went on for days.

On September 14, Bush decided to go up to Ground Zero to check out the site. You could see the smoke trail from the World Trade Center from the air, and we also saw the Statue of Liberty. It was a weird juxtaposition — you could tell that our democracy was under assault. The burning smell was very strong from the air.

We landed at the Wall Street Landing Zone, right by the river, and went to the site. There was a thick coating of ash everywhere. Firefighters were exhausted. They lined up to greet Bush. It was a very emotional visit for the president, and there were concerns that some of the surrounding buildings might cave in because they’d been weakened by the World Trade Center collapse, but they figured out that it was okay for the president to go. He was led on the tour by then-New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who was known as a very strong mayor. Bush began speaking to the firefighters and they shouted, “We can’t hear you.” Karl Rove, one of Bush’s top aides, found a bullhorn and gave it to the president and he said, “I can hear you! The rest of the world hears you! And the people — and the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon!”

It was a moment that I could tell that history had changed, that we were going to be on a war footing now. The hair on the back of my neck literally went up.

It was nightfall by the time the president left, and a bunch of New Yorkers had candles and lined the motorcade route with this candlelit ceremony. I’d never seen anything like that in my life. You know, New Yorkers are usually fairly brash people, but you could tell they were deeply affected by this.

At that moment, what was your coverage focused on?

The words that Bush said — the people who knocked down these buildings will hear from all of us soon — prompted us to think very forward about what was going to happen. We knew that Osama bin Laden was a threat. Suspicion immediately turned to him and the United States began preparing for an invasion of Afghanistan, so we were following every step of that. We knew that Bush wanted to get Osama bin Laden, and this was a rare thing, to go after one single individual. That was a very special focus for us in our reporting. Plus, the human toll, the emergency response to what had happened, what’s going to happen to commercial air travel, and the safety precautions needed at airports now to address this new threat.

At what point did you realize that this story was going to have consequences beyond just the immediate tragedy?

I would say pretty much immediately. We knew that this was unlike anything we’d ever seen before.

There was a lot of focus on the hijackers. Fifteen of the 19 were Saudi nationals and the ringleader, Egyptian national Mohamed Atta, had flight training in Florida. So we did a lot of reporting around that; how they managed to slip through. We really went hard after that story.

Is there anything from that period that still stays with you, 25 years on?

Just that what happened that week and the war that Bush would start in the weeks ahead, that’s still with us today. There’s still this conflict with Al Qaeda and other groups. We just keep getting into wars in the Middle East, most recently with Trump in Iran. That’s the main takeaway I have.

I will tell you this anecdote: I was wearing this pair of shoes that day at Ground Zero, and the ash was so thick on the ground that it covered my shoes. When I got home that night, I put them in a plastic bag and in the closet because they were too ruined to wear but too dear to me to throw away. And those shoes are still in my closet. I kept them all this time as a kind of a remembrance of that difficult period.
