Roy Cooper, the former Democrat governor of North Carolina now running for Senate, added an ex-member of the notorious Bloods gang to a “Racial Equity in Criminal Justice” task force in 2020.

In the wake of George Floyd’s 2020 death, Cooper created the task force via executive order, The Washington Free Beacon reported.

Cooper, who tapped then state attorney general turned current Gov. Josh Stein to lead the task force, stocked the panel with a mix of state officials and community activists, including Kerwin Pittman, who was convicted in 2007 of conspiracy to commit murder, serving 14 years in prison for the crime, according to records obtained by the Free Beacon.

Pittman was also identified as a “ranking member of the Bloods” by prosecutors during a murder trial for Bloods member Michael Contrez Jones.

Pittman was convicted in connection to the 2006 drive-by-shooting of 19-year-old Jamel Amiens Jeffreys, the Free Beacon reported.

Pittman defended his involvement in the task force and argued his past actions were the result of poor judgment as a teenager.

“I was asked to contribute to conversations about criminal justice reform because of both my lived experience and the work I was doing in communities,” Pittman told the Free Beacon. “I have never hidden my past. The gang involvement and criminal conduct you reference occurred when I was a teenager and young man, at or before the age of 19. I am now 39 years old.”

“I made decisions as a young person that had serious consequences, including spending more than a decade incarcerated,” he added.

Pittman, according to his LinkedIn profile, worked at the time of the task force’s creation for Emancipate NC, an organization which, as the Free Beacon reported, has often called for the abolition of police, writing that “maintaining white supremacy has always been the goal of policing,” in a 2023 company blog post.

Cooper, who is running for Senate against former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Whatley, referenced his opponent’s record when asked to comment on the Free Beacon story.

“While Roy spent his career putting rapists and violent criminals behind bars and signing tough on crime laws as governor, Michael Whatley spent his appointing a convicted child sex predator who served six years in prison and spent over a decade as a registered sex offender to a top role within the North Carolina Republican Party that gave him access to events with children,” the Cooper campaign told Fox News Digital in a statement.

    Axios

President Trump is set to deliver a keynote address Wednesday on the opening night of the Republican National Committee Midterm Convention in Dallas, a rare mid-cycle gathering of party leaders and delegates he’s called as a way to rally the party faithful ahead of November’s contests.

Vice President JD Vance, considered one of Mr. Trump’s potential successors, is set to headline the second evening, but others reportedly considering 2028 presidential bids are also on the agenda.

RNC officials confirm other invited speakers include a mix of top Cabinet secretaries, top Republican congressional leaders, lawmakers with close ties to the president, and candidates in key House, Senate and gubernatorial contests. Exact speaking times are not yet announced, and other speakers are expected to be added to the roster.

Axios was first to report the confirmed speakers.

Among those slated to speak are former White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt — who is now serving as an outside political adviser to the president — Donald Trump Jr., Attorney General Todd Blanche and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Absent from the current list of speakers are Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Mr. Trump has frequently cited Rubio as a potential Vance running mate or future presidential nominee, while recent reports suggest Hegseth is considering a future White House bid, something his aides deny.

Among Capitol Hill leadership, House Speaker Mike Johnson and Sen. John Barrasso of Wyoming, the second-ranking GOP senator, are slated to appear, while Senate Majority Leader John Thune, who has clashed publicly with Mr. Trump in recent months, is not. Mr. Thune is, however, expected to be in Dallas to attend fundraisers.

Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, who has said he doesn’t believe Vance will have the 2028 presidential contest to himself, is also invited to speak, as is Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who has been lagging behind his Democratic opponent James Talarico in polling and fundraising in their Senate contest. However, on Saturday, Mr. Trump delivered his first major campaign contribution by donating $10 million from his MAGA Inc. super PAC to help Paxton’s campaign.

Also scheduled to speak is Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who recent polls suggest is narrowly edging his Democratic opponent, Gina Hinojosa.

Colombia drone attack by suspected guerrillas kills at least 3 soldiers, army says

    2026-09-05 12:13:16 EDT / CBS/AP

An attack involving explosives dropped from drones followed by a clash inside a military compound in northeastern Colombia has killed at least three soldiers and wounded four, Colombia’s army said Saturday.

Local authorities blamed the attack late Friday on the rebel National Liberation Army (ELN). It targeted a military unit in the municipality of Ocaña, in the Norte de Santander department, which borders Venezuela. Two soldiers died at the site and a third after receiving medical attention, Colombia’s military said on X.

“In the context of the operations deployed following these events, Captain Marco David Pirajón Montezuma, Professional Soldier Joel Alberto Jiménez Jaramillo, and Professional Soldier Jhon Carlos Marrugo Manjarrez were killed during an engagement in combat, while honorably and committedly carrying out their duty in service to the Nation,” the military said.

President Abelardo de la Espriella condemned the attack.

“For every police officer or soldier murdered, we will bring the full weight and legitimate force of the State down upon the criminals,” the president said.

De la Espriella, a millionaire who earned President Trump’s endorsement, won a close runoff election in June. He started his four-year term on Aug. 7. Since taking office, De la Espriella has joined the Shield of the Americas, an anti-cartel alliance headed by the U.S.

He has said he plans to forge a military alliance with Israel and the U.S. to help strengthen his war against Colombia’s guerrillas.

Much of ELN, an armed group active since 1964, is based in the Catatumbo region, which includes parts of the Norte de Santander and Cesar departments. ELN also harbors dissident factions of the now-defunct Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) that did not join the peace agreement a decade ago.

Both groups are vying for control of the strategic region, which connects to the porous border with Venezuela and is one of Colombia’s primary coca-producing areas.

In August, an explosion outside a police station in Cucuta injured 11 police officers and killed a police dog. Officials also blamed that attack on the ELN. Earlier this week, at least one civilian was killed and 11 other people were injured after a car bomb exploded outside a police station in northeastern Colombia.

U.S. ambassador to Israel says “act of terror” cannot continue after weeks of West Bank unrest

    2026-09-05T13:54:05-0400 / CBS News

    September 5, 2026 / 1:54 PM EDT / AP

The U.S. ambassador to Israel condemned Israeli settler violence in the occupied West Bank again on Saturday, calling the behavior an “act of terror” as he visited with Palestinian American residents shaken by months of attacks.

“If there are squatters that come in and put up their own flags and take possession of something that does not belong to them, if they burn a car, if they torch a mosque, if they go into someone’s home and vandalize it, paint graffiti on the walls, that’s a criminal act. But it extends beyond a criminal act. It’s an act of terror,” Ambassador Mike Huckabee said during his visit to the village of Turmus Ayya, which has reported frequent attacks by settlers over the past year.

Such attacks have surged since the war in Gaza began with the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, according to the United Nations humanitarian office.

U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee visits the town of Turmus Ayya, northeast of Ramallah in the West Bank, Palestine, on Sept. 5, 2026. Issam Rimawi/Anadolu via Getty Images

During Saturday’s visit to Turmus Ayya, the ambassador began his remarks by making clear he was addressing U.S. citizens, who make up a small percentage of the roughly 3 million Palestinians in the West Bank.

“I’m very aware that a lot of the American people who live in Turmus Ayya and other communities across this region are not enjoying the life they deserve to live, not enjoying it in a peaceful way,” Huckabee said. “It’s a life that is disturbed by people who have created extraordinary challenges that are unfair and illegal.”

The U.S. Embassy can’t investigate criminal activity, he said, but it can tell its host government “there are needs that need to be addressed, there are issues that cannot go unnoticed, and specific crimes and acts of terror that cannot continue without that country doing the investigation and adjudication that every person has a right to expect.”

Huckabee met with about 10 Palestinian American residents who described the impact of the violence on their lives and properties, the municipality told The Associated Press.

A week ago, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the actions of a “handful of rioters,” and the foreign ministry called the settlers’ actions “a disgrace.”

Netanyahu’s government is the most ultranationalist and religious in Israel’s history. It has presided over a surge of settlement construction in the West Bank.

Israel captured the West Bank, along with Gaza and East Jerusalem, in the 1967 Mideast war, territories the Palestinians want for a future state. The U.N. and much of the international community consider them to be illegally occupied.

Since then, the Israeli government has built nearly 150 settlements that are home to well over 500,000 Jewish settlers. Many settlements resemble developed suburbs.

Israel’s military operates in all parts of the West Bank, but rights groups have said the military frequently turns a blind eye to settler violence.

Trump weighs in on Lindsay Clancy murder trial dubbed ‘kangaroo court’ by GOP leaders

    September 5, 2026 12:55pm EDT / Fox News

The jury deadlocked 11-1 in favor of acquittal after a 6-week trial over the Massachusetts mother’s insanity defense

President Donald Trump said Lindsay Clancy will still have to pay “the price” for the deaths of her three small children — Cora 5, Dawson 3, and Callan, 8 months — after a mistrial was ruled on Friday.

During a press gaggle in the Oval Office, a reporter asked Trump if he’d been following the murder trial of Clancy, a Massachusetts mom whose defense did not deny that she strangled her children with exercise bands in January 2023, but argued that she was not guilty by reason of insanity. Her attorneys claimed that she suffered from postpartum psychosis, a severe but rare psychiatric condition in which a person is disconnected from reality.

“It’s a horrible tragedy,” Trump shared with reporters. “It’s a horrible tragedy. I see what’s happened, and it looks like it’s a hung jury.”

Trump weighs in on Lindsay Clancy mistrial: ‘It’s a horrible tragedy’

“I assume there’s going to be another trial. It’s a terrible situation. Look, she did a horrible, horrible thing. Can’t be worse. But you’ll find out what the price to pay is. There’ll be a price. It’s going to be [a] mental institution or jail or something,” Trump continued.

LINDSAY CLANCY MISTRIAL DECLARED AFTER JURY DEADLOCKS IN KILLINGS OF HER THREE CHILDREN

The six-week trial, which was supposed to determine whether Clancy was to be held criminally responsible, quickly evolved into a flashpoint in the internet culture war over women’s postpartum mental health and spurred misinformation and conspiracy theories, including false claims accusing her ex-husband, Patrick Clancy, of being responsible for the children’s deaths.

After nearly a week of deliberations, Judge William Sullivan declared a mistrial when the jury deadlocked 11 to 1: 11 jurors voted to acquit Clancy, while one holdout refused to join them. The jury consisted of 9 women and 3 men.

Clancy’s defense attorney requested that the lone juror be removed because a note given to the judge by the jurors said the holdout had doubt but refused to apply it, according to People.

The mistrial invoked a strong reaction from Republican lawmakers, while Democratic lawmakers and leaders — including those from Clancy’s state — have remained mum on the high-profile case.

“Out of 12 people, only ONE had the courage to hold a serial killer accountable for her actions,” Rep. Michael Rulli, R-Ohio, posted on X. “That’s not just bravery. That’s a hero.”

“Holdout juror’s going to need security,” Sen. Mike Lee, R-Ohio, posted on X. “Sad.”

Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis called the mistrial a “miscarriage of justice.”

“The victims deserved far, far better than a kangaroo court,” DeSantis wrote.

Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., who has been incredibly vocal against Clancy’s supporters — who have been gathered outside the courthouse and posted videos showing support online — suggesting Clancy would not have this support if she were Black.

“This case is not about the excuses for why she committed murder,” Mace posted on X. “This is about justice for the three beautiful souls whose lives were taken after their mother strangled them with her bare hands and workout bands.”

PATRICK CLANCY SPEAKS OUT AFTER HUNG JURY IN LINDSAY CLANCY CASE, ADDRESSES PROSPECT OF ANOTHER TRIAL

“12 jurors looked at this onesie,” Mace continued. “Only ONE stood his ground to defend the children.”

But Clancy’s defense argued that she was a devoted and loving mother who was desperately seeking to get help, alleging that the cocktail of medications she was on worsened her mental state. Clancy had been prescribed 13 psychiatric medications — more than 30 prescriptions — in the four months leading up to the murders.

Patrick Clancy is suing for wrongful death and medical malpractice against Clancy’s providers, Dr. Jennifer Tufts, Rebecca Jollotta, Aster Mental Health and South Shore Health System. Clancy also filed a separate lawsuit alleging negligence, medical malpractice and personal injury.

“Lindsay was struggling. We were all very concerned,” Susan Clancy, Clancy’s mother-in-law, told jurors. “She was very nurturing, very loving. She was a wonderful mother. Wonderful.”

Control of the Senate could hinge on these independents running where Democrats aren’t

    2026-09-05T16:00:29.752Z / CNN

    Seward, Nebraska—

Stephanie Nantkes is a proud Democrat. But when asked how her political party is perceived here, she doesn’t sugarcoat the answer.

“I mean, not well,” said Nantkes, a retired teacher. “Not well at all.”

She wore a light blue “Seward County Democrats” shirt to meet her preferred US Senate candidate, who is actually not a Democrat.

In fact, there is no Democrat on the fall Senate ballot. Party leaders decided to stand down and support Dan Osborn, an independent, in hopes of boosting his chances against Republican Sen. Pete Ricketts.

“People are more outraged by Washington now than they were then,” Nantkes said. “Two years ago, he almost pulled it off. So what do you think might happen this time?”

After losing a Senate race here in 2024 by fewer than 7 percentage points, Osborn is trying again — and this time, he’s not alone.

Democrats are also backing independent candidates in South Dakota and Idaho. In Montana, some party leaders are supporting Seth Bodnar, an independent former university president, after a long-shot Democratic nominee declined to drop out.

Osborn’s candidacy is seen by strategists as a roadmap.

“We are going to start to see in 2028 and beyond people stepping up and using this model to win in their perspective states,” Osborn said. “So we can get a group of people that want to do the right thing.”

For all the handwringing in all corners of the nation over the direction of the Democratic Party, the decisions by party leaders to intentionally not run nominees in several states is a blunt acknowledgment of the party’s toxicity in a stretch of the country that once routinely elected Democrats to state and federal office.

Two decades ago, Nebraska had one Democratic senator and North and South Dakota each had two. Former Montana Sen. Jon Tester won reelection during Trump’s first term but lost by seven points in 2024 while Trump won the state by 20.

“You know, our brand still needs a lot of help,” said Jane Kleeb, chairwoman of the Nebraska Democratic Party who also serves as vice chair of the Democratic National Committee. “I deeply understand why they’re frustrated with the Democratic Party nationally. All you see on TV is coastal Democrats, so we’re working hard to change that.”

Kleeb called it a “pragmatic” decision to support Osborn’s candidacy, telling CNN: “It shows people that we are willing to cross party lines and not let our ego of partisanship get in the way of what’s best for Nebraska.”

    ‘Stop looking left and right’

To be sure, the Senate races are an uphill climb for all the independent candidates in deep-red states where President Donald Trump recorded a trio of double-digit victories. A robust mix of independent voters along with a healthy share of exhausted Republicans would have to join Democrats for any independent to have a shot at winning.

Yet a battered agricultural economy as well as frustration with tariffs and other administration policies, including a recent decision to allow more foreign beef imports into the country, is testing Republican patience and dominance in November.

“I compare it to pulling a drain plug in a full tub of bathwater,” said Mike Mulholland, a retired Omaha fire captain who came to see Osborn at a town hall meeting. “It’s not going from one extreme to the other, but I see the support for MAGA slowly circling the drain, because I think people are waking up and they want change.”

Osborn, a mechanic and former union president at the Kellogg’s cereal plant in Omaha that closed last month, makes clear that he has little use — and no loyalty — for either political party and believes voters are open to finding a new way.

“We have to stop looking left and right and pointing fingers and we have to start looking up,” Osborn said in an interview. “We have to start looking up at the puppet masters, the lobbyists, the money in politics that drives the political-industrial complex.”

As Osborn moves closer toward holding town meetings in all 93 counties across Nebraska, he said he notices a different political climate than two years ago when he lost to Sen. Deb Fischer. He sees a restive electorate, even among conservatives he meets, and believes there is a potential opening as more voters seek change.

“The significant difference between when I was campaigning in 2024 is the war in Iran,” Osborn said. “And costs are skyrocketing that families are struggling with.”

Osborn and the three other independent candidates are military veterans. He served in the Navy and peppers his speeches with references to passing through the Strait of Hormuz during four stints in the Middle East.

“We were promised no new wars — no new foreign wars — but yet here we are,” Osborn told a town hall meeting at the VFW Club in Crete, a southeast Nebraska town, where about 80 people turned out to see him on a recent Sunday afternoon. “We are worse off now than we were when we started.”

A central question in Nebraska and beyond is what the Senate candidates would do if they actually win.

While Democrats have extended a hand in hopes of denying Republicans a majority in a narrowly divided Senate, Osborn and other contenders pledge to maintain their independence. He says he has never been a registered Democrat and frequently points out his father is a lifelong conservative.

“I don’t need to caucus with either party,” Osborn said during a debate this week at the Nebraska State Fair. “Nobody’s got a monopoly on a good idea. I will work with Republicans to get things passed, but it’s about delivering for Nebraska. That’s what I intend to do, is to work for the people of Nebraska, not a party boss.”

Ricketts, who served as the state’s governor for two terms and is now running for reelection to the Senate, sharply questions Osborn’s independence.

In their only scheduled debate of the campaign, he called his rival “Democrat Dan” more than three dozen times during an hourlong forum.

“Democrat Dan is trying to sell you a message about how he’s this regular guy from Nebraska,” Ricketts said. “But he’s being bought and paid for by people on the coast who want a senator from California or New York, not one from Nebraska.”

The independents seldom mention cultural issues and occasionally take positions traditionally favored by Republicans.

“If we get multiple independents into the United States Senate, we become the power bloc,” said Brian Bengs, a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel and independent who is challenging South Dakota Sen. Mike Rounds, a Republican. “It is a new concept that we’re trying to sell here.”

In an interview, Bengs said he would not caucus with either party and was hopeful that independents could “deny either team a majority” in a closely divided Senate.

“If you can get just a handful of independents in there, we become the fulcrum through which you need to move anything through the Senate,” Bengs said. “You’re going to need us and there’s going to be a price for that, and we want good government reforms.”

In Idaho, Todd Achilles, a former state legislator and Army veteran, is challenging three-term Republican Sen. Jim Risch. His independent candidacy, while still seen as a long shot in a state Trump won by 37 percentage points two years ago, is being closely watched by GOP officials, mindful of the political headwinds the party is facing.

In all of the Senate contests, a desire to break up one-party rule in Washington, corruption and corporate dominance are central themes for the independent hopefuls.

“The biggest thing that transcends party lines, the root cause, is the corruption,” Osborn said. “We can all feel that Washington, DC, is broken.”

While Osborn is seeking to tap into feelings of discontent among voters, he rarely mentions Trump’s name directly in his town hall meetings — even when asked, which Lynn Wake did when she met Osborn at a recent afternoon campaign stop.

She wondered what Osborn thought of the president. After a few open laughs in the room, he delivered a long reply that barely mentioned Trump at all. She said she didn’t mind him skirting the question, knowing that any path to victory must include a coalition of Nebraskans who voted for Trump.

“We don’t need to do Trump bashing now,” Wake said. “That’s all been said and done.”

She said she was pleased Democratic leaders decided to stand down and not replace a Senate candidate on the ballot, a calculated decision designed to help Osborn.

“He’s a good candidate,” Wake said. “I don’t think Democrats wanted to get in the way of that.”

The United Nations on Friday was one vote shy of unanimously adopting a new map of the world that shows Africa’s true size, making the continent appear far larger than it does on traditional maps.

The United States was the only one of the 165 member nations to vote against the UN General Assembly resolution to accept the Equal Earth map projection, which depicts countries and continents in their true relative sizes, according to the map creator’s website.

Six nations abstained, including Estonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Moldova, Serbia and Ukraine.

Yaryna Ferencevych, the deputy U.S. representative to the U.N. Economic and Social Council, said the resolution was presented as “an anodyne effort to update cartographic proportions” but was, in her view, part of a “much larger and more radical ideological project.”

Yaryna Ferencevych, the deputy U.S. representative to the United Nations Economic and Social Council, speaks against adopting the Equal Earth world map during the 114th plenary meeting of the 80th session of the U.N. General Assembly on Sept. 4, 2026.(United Nations)

TRUMP ADMINISTRATION REJECTS UN MIGRATION DECLARATION, SAYS ‘MASS MIGRATION WAS NEVER SAFE’

“Instead of focusing on genuine problems of international peace, prosperity, or good relations, this body is debating map projects from the 16th century and their role in promoting reparations and cognitive justice,” Ferencevych said Friday during the 114th Plenary meeting.

“Resolutions like this one and the ideological agenda they promote are barnacles on our work here and the reason this institution is losing its credibility,” she added.

Ferencevych was referring to the Mercator projection, created in 1569 to aid maritime navigation. To this day, it is seen as the traditional world map and is used in many school textbooks and atlases.

It enlarges land masses near the poles and reduces the apparent size of those near the equator, making Africa appear far smaller relative to Greenland and Europe than it is in reality.

Togo Foreign Minister Robert Dussey, who introduced the resolution on behalf of the African Group, said that adopting the new map would “promote projections that better preserve the true proportions of continents.”

“A fair map does not change the geography of the world; it changes how we see the world,” he said. “And when our perspective becomes more just, it paves the way for greater understanding, respect and peace among nations.”

The measure does not require countries or companies to abandon the Mercator projection, but it establishes the U.N.’s official backing for equal-area maps as the preferred way to depict the world.

The Mercator projection largely fell out of favor among cartographers in the 20th century because of its distortions. However, it saw a resurgence after Google Maps adopted the Web Mercator projection in 2005, with virtually every major online mapping service following suit.

Web Mercator became the standard for online maps because it allowed for smooth panning and zooming across the globe, making it well suited for interactive digital maps, according to a 2014 Cartographica study.

Trump’s PAC wades into midterms with $10 million ad buy to boost Ken Paxton

President Donald Trump’s super PAC has started spending its massive war chest on the midterm elections, disclosing ad buys totaling $10 million in support of Texas Senate candidate Ken Paxton.

Republicans had long awaited action from MAGA Inc., growing anxious over being outspent in tough races that could determine which party controls Congress. Paxton is in a tight contest against Democrat James Talarico, who had the airwaves largely to himself for weeks this summer.

MAGA Inc. had more than $400 million in cash on hand at the end of July. On Friday, Trump vowed to spend as much as $500 million in outside money that he oversees.

“We’re going to spend a lot of money because we don’t want to lose our country,” he told reporters in the Oval Office.

One of the first pro-Paxton ads from MAGA Inc. casts the Republican as confronting the rising costs Texans face with proposals to reduce their tax bills.

“High Tax Talarico wants to take money out of Texans’ pockets,” MAGA, Inc. spokesman Alex Pfeiffer said in a statement on Saturday. “MAGA Inc. is going to ensure Texas knows about Talarico’s radical policies and elects Ken Paxton to the U.S. Senate.”

Talarico’s campaign shot back, calling the claims untruthful and a sign of GOP anxiety over the tight race.

“Billionaire-backed dark money groups are lying about James Talarico because they’re scared of the people-powered movement we’re building to fix this broken, corrupt political system,” campaign spokesperson JT Ennis said in a statement later on Saturday. “James was proud to vote for the largest property tax cut in Texas history and has consistently voted to cut taxes for working Texans.”

Together with new spending from a super PAC aligned with billionaire Elon Musk, a wave of Republican cash to aid Paxton could change the contours of a race critical to the GOP’s hopes of retaining control of the chamber after November’s midterm elections. Democrats need to net just four seats to win the Senate majority.

The influx of money from MAGA Inc. to help Paxton comes just days before Republicans are scheduled to convene in Texas for a one-of-a-kind midterm convention aimed at engaging GOP voters.

Trump’s decision earlier this year to back Paxton over incumbent Sen. John Cornyn in the primary election had raised concerns about the high price of making the controversial Paxton more appealing to voters in the general election.

Paxton, who currently serves as Texas’ attorney general, has faced a long list of scandals over the years, including a 2023 impeachment vote by the state House of Representatives over allegations of bribery and corruption. The state Senate later acquitted him of all the charges. Late last month, Talarico, a Texas state representative, unveiled his first negative ad about Paxton, attacking him over the allegations of corruption.

CNN previously reported that the National Republican Senatorial Committee and the Senate Leadership Fund, both of which strongly backed Cornyn in the primary, had looked to MAGA Inc. to take the lead in backing Paxton in the general election.
