WASHINGTON, July 30 (Reuters) – OpenAI CEO Sam Altman will discuss his company’s upcoming AI models and voluntary ​government cybersecurity testing of advanced AI systems with ‌White House officials on Thursday, an OpenAI spokesperson said, more than a week after the company disclosed that one ​of its AI models escaped containment during a security ​test.

Altman will meet with White House chief of ⁠staff Susie Wiles, National Cyber Director Sean Cairncross, ​and tech adviser Michael Kratsios on Thursday, an OpenAI ​spokesperson told Reuters. He is also scheduled to meet with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on Thursday, according to a person familiar ​with the matter.

Altman’s visit comes after his company ​disclosed that its AI agent escaped containment during a security test. The ‌agent ⁠triggered a hack that compromised the infrastructure of AI company Hugging Face, a platform where developers store and work together on code for AI models. The ​agent also compromised ​a customer ⁠at a second tech company, New York-based Modal Labs, Reuters reported.

Trump on June 2 directed ​his advisers to develop voluntary cybersecurity tests ​for the ⁠most advanced AI models, with input from the developers. He gave the team until August 1 to finalize ⁠the ​details. Altman told reporters on ​Wednesday that he had seen plans about the proposed tests, but declined ​to elaborate.

Saudi leaders, Netanyahu give Trump their input on Iran war as conflict enters 6th month

The U.S.-Israeli war in Iran has rocked the Mideast and spread through the region, and President Trump is now weighing what to do next to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and extract any concessions from Iran’s increasingly hardline leadership.

In meetings with Mr. Trump and Vice President JD Vance Wednesday, Saudi Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman conveyed the Kingdom’s assessment that Iran is trying to find leverage in the conflict through escalation, and its main leverage points are through proxy forces in Yemen, the Houthis, and Iraqi militias.

Prince Khalid was originally supposed to visit Washington last week but was delayed due to recent strikes, according to a source with knowledge of his plans.

The Saudis joined the U.S. in strikes against Iranian-backed militias in Iraq on Wednesday and bombed Houthis days earlier, in the first public engagement of any Persian Gulf nation during the war. The Kingdom described the actions as defensive actions. At least 20 people, including some Iranian military advisers, were killed in the Saudi-U.S. strikes, according to the Iran-backed militia groups.

Saudi Arabia’s leaders are trying to avoid further regional escalation that would risk miscalculation or prolonging of the war, which has now stretched into its sixth month. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and his brother Khalid bin Salman have been concerned that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who launched the war in February alongside the U.S. and met with Mr. Trump Tuesday, is pushing for escalation.

During their meeting, Prime Minister Netanyahu counseled the president on three options for the war: First, a deal focused on removal of the nuclear material; second, a blockade with added economic pressure; and a third option involving military strikes particularly focused on attacking land routes used for transporting supplies, a senior Israeli official said.

The senior Israeli official described the conversation between Mr. Trump and Netanyahu as “very clinical.” Netanyahu held a follow-up meeting Wednesday with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Under Secretary of War for Policy Elbridge Colby, and met privately with U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff.

Speaking to reporters a day after the Oval Office meeting, a senior Israeli official defended Netanyahu’s original estimate to Mr. Trump of a war that would last just four to six weeks — one that the president publicly repeated at the outset of the conflict — by saying that the “tense part” was only four to six weeks long.

Neither the White House nor the Israelis have released a readout of the meeting between the two leaders.

The senior Israeli official acknowledged that economic sanctions and blockades could be effective in persuading more pragmatic Iranian officials to pursue diplomacy. Pressed on whether Israel has determined there is anyone worth negotiating with in Iran, the official offered only one name — Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi — and characterized him as a realist, but not a moderate.

The senior Israeli official acknowledged Netanyahu is sensitive to being seen as pushing Mr. Trump in any direction regarding the war and described the relationship as one with the president as the senior partner and Israel as the junior one. As the official put it, Netanyahu is not a vassal of Trump, and Trump is not a vassal of Netanyahu.

Netanyahu still believes that the only real change in Iran will result from regime change, and hopes to achieve that goal by laying the groundwork for an uprising. Currently, however, U.S. intelligence does not assess that renewed strikes would dislodge the regime in Tehran. Mr. Trump has repeatedly said he favors negotiating with the regime, which would arguably lend a life line to those the Israelis hope to extract.

The United Arab Emirates also carried out dozens of airstrikes in Iran this spring but has not publicly advertised it. Gulf allies who house U.S. troops, including Kuwait and Bahrain, have fended off near-daily incoming drones and missiles, some of them launched from Iran and some from Iraqi territory. Kuwaiti ambassador to the U.S. Sheikha al Zain al Sabah issued an on-the-record denial that the country had participated in strikes on Iran after the Wall Street Journal reported it last week.

The strikes in Iraq were in response to a series of attacks on Saudi civilian infrastructure. The Kingdom also sent a message to the Houthis last week that it could strike back after the Iran-backed militants threatened a naval blockade against Saudi vessels in the Red Sea and claimed to have struck two Saudi oil tankers.

CBS News tracked at least five vessels early last week, including several laden with Saudi crude oil, making U-turns before reaching the Bab el-Mandeb Strait soon after the Houthis had vowed to block Saudi-linked ships.

Another Israeli official emphasized that funding from Iran continues to flow to its proxies including to pay Hezbollah salaries. Israeli Defense Forces were hit by a fiber optic or SIM card-powered drone in Lebanon earlier this week, and Israel is expected to respond.

Separately, Lt.-Gen. Joseph Clearfield, commander of CENTCOM’s Marine Corps Forces, has been in and out of Beirut, since the U.S. oversees the pilot zones in Lebanon, urging Israel to withdraw so Lebanese Army forces can take control.

Next week in Rome, the Israeli and Lebanese ambassadors to the U.S. will be participating in further technical discussions about the pilot zones and steps toward a peace deal.

Former Wisconsin Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes dropped his bid for governor on Thursday, scrambling the race to replace Gov. Tony Evers less than two weeks from the Democratic primary.

In a video posted to social media, Barnes said that it’s “very clear who our nominee is going to be.”

Though he didn’t name her, democratic socialist lawmaker Francesca Hong has led recent polls. Hong’s chief rival for the nomination is now Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley.

Barnes called on Democrats to rally to defeat Republican US Rep. Tom Tiffany, who is all but certain to be the GOP nominee in the perpetual battleground state.

In the video, Barnes said he had a “very difficult conversation” with his staff Wednesday night.

“Now, it’s our time to come together, to focus our efforts” on defeating Tiffany, he said. “We have to do everything to beat Tom Tiffany. This is life or death for Wisconsinites.”

Barnes is the second major candidate to drop out of the race within two weeks. Earlier this month, Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez — Evers’ second-term No. 2, holding the post Barnes held for the Democratic governor’s first term — also ended her campaign.

His exit increases the likelihood that the Wisconsin governor’s race becomes a critical test case, with the 2028 Democratic presidential primary looming, of how a democratic socialist candidate performs in a general election in a must-win presidential battleground.

“Do you think James Talarico still plays with his Fauci action figure?” Rep. Brandon Gill, a Texas Republican, wrote Wednesday.

Republicans, facing a well-funded challenger in Talarico, have sought to portray him as effeminate in an effort to harm his image among Texas voters. His opponent, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, branded him as “too low-T for Texas,” and an AI ad produced by a conservative group portrayed the Democratic hopeful prancing around in a dress.

“It comes as no surprise that James Talarico has a Dr. Fauci action figure,” commentator Benny Johnson quipped on X.

The National Rifle Association, along similar lines, cautioned its X followers to “Never trust a grown man that plays with dolls.”

Talarico’s post resurfaced Wednesday as Fauci returned to the news cycle following his repeated refusal to answer questions under oath before Congress, invoking his Fifth Amendment right to avoid making self-incriminating statements.

At the time of his post, Talarico was serving as a member of the Texas House of Representatives, a post he still holds today. Even when he first posted the image of his toy, conservatives attacked the Texas lawmaker for attaching himself to what they believed to be unpopular lockdown policies.

“James Talarico called Fauci a superhero,” Republican Texas Sen. Ted Cruz wrote on X Wednesday. “Today, Fauci took the Fifth 111 times. Apparently accountability was sold separately.”

“If you push the lever, it pleads the Fifth,” the senator later added.

Fauci suggested that the hearing was the result of Sen. Rand Paul’s “unhinged obsession” with him.

Republicans appear to view Talarico’s admiration for Fauci as something that will hurt his electoral prospects, with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s campaign account posting “Christmas in July” alongside a Christmas tree and mask emoji in response to Talarico’s post.

The figurine, which features a “removable mask” and can be purchased online for around $25, is part of a line of toys called “real life action figures” manufactured by a company called FCTRY. Other figures in the series include Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and former Vice President Kamala Harris.

The Talarico campaign did not respond to a request for comment when reached by Fox News Digital Thursday.

Woman in first Alien Terrorist Removal Court case mounts constitutional challenge over secrecy

The woman facing the first-ever case in the Alien Terrorist Removal Court is challenging the constitutionality of the deportation tribunal, setting up a major test of the Trump administration’s decision to activate the court, which had never been used in its 30-year history.

Lawyers for Nazira Haji Zada — a legal permanent resident from Afghanistan who is accused of having ISIS sympathies and of assisting her son in a thwarted terror plot that targeted the 2024 Election — said during an initial hearing Thursday that the court’s procedure’s run afoul of several amendments of the Constitution.

“This entire scheme is in violation of due process and is unconstitutional,” said Matthew Farley, a federal public defender who has been appointed to represent Haji Zada.

Their arguments could set up months, if not years, of litigation over the court’s constitutionality, a question that could ultimately travel to the Supreme Court.

Judge Joan Ericksen, the chief judge of the court, who is presiding over the case, denied a request that Haji Zada be immediately released. But she said those constitutional issues will be briefed alongside other legal disputes that have already arisen in the novel case.

Congress created the court in 1996 as a way for the government to protect state secrets in deportation cases where the disclosure of its evidence against an alleged alien terrorist risked national security. (Alien terrorist is a term defined in immigration law).

Until the Justice Department’s decision to file the case against the woman earlier this month, however, prior administrations avoided using the court, relying instead on the procedures in normal deportation proceedings for handling classified information.

The filings that have been made public in the case against Haji Zada give a very limited view of why the government thinks she is terrorist and why it believes disclosing that evidence would imperil national security. The court’s procedures allow for the government to withhold that evidence not just from the public, but from the accused alien terrorist herself.

Farley called those procedures “woefully inadequate” and noted that the unclassified summary of the case that has been given to Haji Zada was just two paragraphs — and that one of them just described the prior convictions of her son and son-in-law for the terror plot.

Last summer, the men — Abdullah Haji Zada and Nasir Ahmad Tawhed — pleaded guilty to charges accusing them of purchasing rifles and ammunition for a plotted terrorist attack for Election Day in 2024. Prosecutors alleged in court Thursday that the alien court defendant, Nazira Haji Zada, had helped to “radicalize the family.”

Ericksen signaled she planned to examine closely the government’s justification for keeping evidence hidden from Haji Zada and the public. The judge said a blanket explanation would not suffice, that for each piece of information that the Justice Department can’t disclose, she will want “a reason and rationale for why disclosure of that information would be detrimental to national security.”

The 45-minute hearing — the first public hearing ever before a court, after a sealed proceeding with just the Justice Department and the judge earlier this month — was aimed at explaining to the alleged alien terrorist the general allegations against her and some of the court’s procedures. Haji Zada was arrested Tuesday in Texas, where she lives. She relied on two translators, communicating mostly with head nods affirming she understood what was being said.

Beyond the constitutional claims her lawyers said they were raising, a dispute is already emerging around the sharing of classified information in the case. The law entitles Haji Zada, as a legal permanent resident, a special attorney who can view classified evidence and interrogate it on her behalf — but not share that information with her. However, Acting Deputy Assistant Attorney General Hayden O’Byrne, representing the DOJ at the hearing, said that another provision of the law allows for the government to withhold certain classified information from that special attorney as well.

Ericksen said the issue will be briefed in writing and that she would need “pretty strong” arguments from DOJ for its position.

The judge acknowledged that since this was the first case in a court that was “dormant and untested for three decades,” it was still in the “early stages of implementing an infrastructure.” Both the judge and the lawyers shuffled through paper copies of the relevant statute throughout the hearing, and some of the proceedings dealt with logistics of filing court submissions, in the absence of a digital court filing system, which is in the process of being set up.

There might be moments that appear “less elegant,” the judge said, while expressing a commitment to moving forward with the case with “fealty to the constitution.”

Trump says he may pull Todd Blanche’s nomination until Cornyn and Tillis leave office

Washington— President Trump on Thursday said he has “no objection” to withdrawing Todd Blanche’s nomination for attorney general until Republican Senators John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina leave office in January, as their concerns have effectively placed Blanche’s nomination process on hold.

Cornyn in particular has demanded that the Justice Department and Blanche formally put in writing that the DOJ’s “anti-weaponization fund” won’t return, and has demanded changes to the president’s personal IRS settlement agreement related to the fund. Cornyn said he isn’t prepared to vote “yes” without an agreement.

The Senate Judiciary Committee was set to vote on advancing Blanche’s nomination Thursday, but late Wednesday, announced it had delayed the hearing.

Now, Mr. Trump has suggested he’s willing to wait out Cornyn and Tillis.

“Todd Blanche is a STAR, and everyone knows it!” the president posted on Truth Social. “He has the potential to go down as one of the Greatest Attorney Generals of All Time. However, John Cornyn, of Texas, and Thom Tillis, of North Carolina, both of whom I refused to Endorse, and whose political careers have been ended by my action, are refusing to vote for this Great Nominee, who will remain, in any event, as Acting.”

The president added. “I have no objection to temporarily withdrawing Todd’s name, if they do not do the right thing, and putting him back after Cornyn and Tillis are out of office.”

On Thursday, Cornyn said he received an updated offer from the Justice Department Wednesday night and sent back a counter proposal. But he said he’s getting some pushback from “higher ups” at the White House. Cornyn said he wants Blanche to recommit to what he said in his testimony about the “anti-weaponization fund” being “dead,” but claimed Blanche doesn’t want to put it in writing.

“We want to make sure that it remains dead, and that the president isn’t given any immunity from future audits that the ordinary taxpayer would not enjoy,” he told CBS News on Thursday.

Tillis seemed more optimistic about a resolution, but said he believes someone at the White House is “giving the president bad advice.”

“The only reason why we wouldn’t move forward with this language is because that same adviser wants to bring it back to life at some point,” he said.

Cornyn said he and Tillis aren’t the only senators with concerns.

“POTUS is mistaken if he believes concerns about the provisions in his tax lawsuit settlement are limited to me and Senator Tillis,” Cornyn posted on X Thursday.

GOP Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, another outgoing Republican, said “Todd Blanche cannot give commitments that Cornyn and Tillis want.”

CBS News asked Cassidy whether he would support Blanche if the vote happened today.

“I’m not going to answer that because I’m still in the information gathering stage,” Cassidy said.

If the president decides to pull and delay Blanche’s nomination, it’s not clear what the makeup of the Senate will be after the midterms. Cornyn said the president’s bet is a “gable.”

“Well, nobody knows what’s going to happen in the November election, and he may have less Republicans to vote on confirmation next year,” he said. “I frankly don’t understand why they’re trying to escalate the fight.”

The U.S. Navy is poised to overhaul its torpedo inventory under the newly-approved congressional budget as the military shifts toward a “two-war” strategy.

Lawmakers made it clear that the U.S. needs to build quantities of undersea weapons sufficient to maintain two major regional conflicts simultaneously, according to Naval News.

Manufacturers are now focused on building up supplies of the U.S. MK-48 Advanced Capability (ADCAP) heavyweight torpedoes and MK-54 lightweight torpedoes to meet the minimum base requirements set by the new budget.

The Navy has not clarified the exact number of undersea weapons that would entail, but it is based on internal estimates about potential conflicts with a near-peer forces.

The Navy is also required to build up a plan to massively increase torpedo production should it become necessary during war or peacetime.

The overhaul comes as the U.S. military is already scrambling to refill stockpiles of missiles and other weapons depleted in the war against Iran.

Defending Israel and the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar from Iranian counterstrikes during the recent 12-day exchange of strikes cost the U.S. and Israel between$1.48 billion to $1.58 billion, according to an analysis by the Jewish Institute for National Security of America (JINSA).

The monthslong conflict has burned through a significant number of America’s offensive and defensive missile systems.

The U.S. had roughly 632 Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) interceptors before June 13, the day Israel began its offensive in Iran. About 540 interceptors remain in its arsenal based on JINSA’s calculations of interceptor deliveries and use, according to the report.

It would take three to eight years to replenish the THAAD interceptors used in the 12-day war at current production rates.

Patriot interceptor production is more robust than THAAD, according to the report, but the U.S. is providing a number of Patriot interceptors to Ukraine. So, it’s unclear how many remain in the stockpile.

The Supreme Court ruled earlier this year that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) does not authorize the president to levy tariffs.

The high court later ruled against an executive order that Trump had issued last year to oppose birthright citizenship.

The 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution states, in part, “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.”

Trump’s executive order declared, “It is the policy of the United States that no department or agency of the United States government shall issue documents recognizing United States citizenship, or accept documents issued by State, local, or other governments or authorities purporting to recognize United States citizenship, to persons: (1) when that person’s mother was unlawfully present in the United States and the person’s father was not a United States citizen or lawful permanent resident at the time of said person’s birth, or (2) when that person’s mother’s presence in the United States was lawful but temporary, and the person’s father was not a United States citizen or lawful permanent resident at the time of said person’s birth.”

First lady Melania Trump’s office announced a fifth group of Ukrainian and Russian children that she helped reunite with their families, as five more children are now with their loved ones.

“While diplomacy and peace-building are important to this effort, they are surpassed by our collective ability to place children above international disputes,” Melania Trump said in a statement. “Every reunion is a reminder that compassion, dignity, and family can transcend even the darkest of times: war. My representative and I continue working with the governments of Russia and Ukraine to safely return children to their families and communities.”

The first lady’s reunification program officially began in October 2025 after she had President Donald Trump hand-deliver her note to Russian President Vladimir Putin during their August 2025 summit in Alaska. Thus far, the White House reports around 30 Ukrainian children have been reunited with their families.

Thousands of civilians, including children, have been killed since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, with last year being the deadliest year since the war began, according to United Nations figures.

“The first lady’s leadership has bridged political divides in pursuit of a singular humanitarian mission: placing the well-being of children above conflict and helping restore families torn apart by war,” the White House announced in a Thursday morning news release.

The returnees are the first since April.

“This is not an easy feat. I applaud leadership from both nations in working with my representative and me to bring love and safety back to each individual who has been displaced as a result of this horrible war,” Melania Trump said in an April 23 speech. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve as first lady but understand that my persistence alone is not enough.”

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., wanted to talk about alleged corruption committed by President Donald Trump and his family, but instead was interrupted by a protester calling out his “diabolical record.”

Schumer was just getting started with his speech at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., to make a “major anti-corruption announcement,” when an audience member seated in the front row tore into the Senate’s top Democrat.

“You talk about corruption, how can you talk about corruption when you back genocide? What can be more corrupt than genocide? This is part of the same con of you and Trump playing off of each other,” the protester said.

The disruptor then noted that Schumer and other congressional Democrats were “put on notice” by the Center for Constitutional Rights in 2023 for “aiding and abetting” Israel in its war against Hamas.

Critics of that conflict have long pointed to the Jewish State for going above and beyond in their quest to snuff out the terrorist organization by leveling cities in Gaza, withholding food, aid and electricity and targeting civilians.

Schumer tried to regain control of the moment and told the audience member, “Thank you for your diatribe. Now let’s continue. Let’s continue.”

But he wasn’t successful.

“You should be questioned about your diabolical record,” the audience member said. “It’s amazing that you can show your genocidal face in public.”

“Mr. Senator. Mr. Senator. Shame on Public Citizen for not allowing questions to this genocidal maniac,” he said as he was escorted out.

Schumer has been a vocal supporter of Israel, voting to send aid and weaponry to the country during the conflict. But over the last several months, Senate Democrats have broken from him on a handful of occasions, and in growing numbers.

Earlier this year, Senate Democrats showed their slow creep away from Israel following the release of photos of starving children in Gaza.

Forty Senate Democrats voted to halt arms sales and military bulldozers to Israel as an act of protest against Trump’s war in Iran in April.

The two resolutions from Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., combined would have blocked nearly $500 million in arms and equipment sales to Israel. One resolution would have halted the sale of roughly $295 million in Caterpillar bulldozers, while the other would have stopped the sale of nearly $152 million worth of 1,000-pound bombs.

Meanwhile, despite the disruption, Schumer did get his point across: to announce the push for legislation to create a new anti-corruption agency.

“This bill is the biggest, boldest and broadest proposal ever put forward to revitalize our anti-corruption institutions,” Schumer said.
