    Nonthaburi, Thailand — A student shot several people at a high school outside Bangkok on Friday, killing at least six and wounding several others, police said.

    The shooting happened at the Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Nonthaburi province northwest of the national capital, Royal Thai Police spokesperson Trairong Piwpan told The Associated Press.

    Authorities gave conflicting information on the casualties that could not immediately be reconciled.

    Trairong told news broadcaster Channel 3 the shooter was being hospitalized in serious condition. He said three teachers and three students were killed and 15 others were injured, two critically.

    Health Minister Pattana Promphat said 22 people were injured with nine in critical condition. Some were injured from causes such as falls, and it wasn’t clear how many were shot.

    Deputy Interior Minister Polapee Suwunchwee told reporters at the scene that five teachers died and that the shooter killed his two grandparents at home before going to the school. He also said the shooter died at a hospital.

    CBS News partner network BBC News reported that the gunman lived with his grandparents.

    The Reuters news agency, citing police, reported that the shooter, who was 14 years old, fired at least 26 bullets and was found with 34 more rounds. The gun belonged to his grandfather, police said.

    Trairong said the motive was still being investigated. He said the gun was believed to have been taken from a member of the student’s family.

    A witness told reporters that students hid inside a classroom while they heard gunshots from another building before police officers knocked on the door and cleared a way for them to leave the building.

    About an hour after the shooting, people stood outside the school comforting one another and police and first responders walked around inside the school.

    Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul offered his condolences and said he had ordered relevant officials to take care of the victims.

    In February, a 17-year-old stole a gun from police and opened fire at a public high school in southern Thailand, briefly taking people hostage in a two-hour attack that killed one person and injured two others.

    In 2023, a 14-year-old boy was accused of a shooting at a major Bangkok shopping mall.

    Jobs report will offer fresh test of Fed Chairman Warsh’s less-guidance stance

    Aug 7 (Reuters) – Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh wants the bond market to take the wheel, contending it should do more of the work of setting the price of money in America.

    In the seven weeks ​since his debut policy meeting as chairman, the result has been a volatile, expensive test of a long dormant economic argument: at what point does information from the central bank ‌become too much information for monetary policy to work efficiently? And how will investors react to economic data and other developments with less guidance from the Fed than they have become accustomed to in recent years?

    The latest response to this question will come on Friday morning with the release of the July employment report, a key read on an economy that many investors believe is already running hot.

    The price of Warsh’s communications-policy shift became unmistakable at his press conference following the Fed’s most recent policy meeting ​last week. A rate hold was expected — futures markets saw only a one-in-three chance of a hike — but what rattled investors was the absence of any clear marker for what would come next.

    Longer-dated Treasury ​yields quickly rose, with the 30-year yield hitting its highest level since 2007 and the 10-year yield touching a level last seen in January 2025.

    Oil prices ⁠spiked heading into the Fed meeting, thanks to the ebb and flow of the Iran war, renewing questions about Warsh’s inflation-fighting resolve. Yields have since declined modestly alongside oil prices, but for many investors the question ​of how the communications shift will play out in markets is far from settled.

    “There is a tension between what Warsh wants versus what the market wants,” said Bill Campbell, portfolio manager and head of global sovereign and ​emerging markets at DoubleLine Capital. Investors now must infer from limited guidance what the Fed chair once spelled out: how the Fed would respond to incoming data.

    WHAT “LESS GUIDANCE” MEANS

    Forward guidance, the Fed’s signaling on likely rate paths, became standard after 2008, when rates hit zero and policymakers used future promises to push down long-term borrowing costs.

    Chris Low, chief economist at FHN Financial, said the tool worked as intended then. But the habit grew under Jerome Powell, who rarely moved rates without first telegraphing ​it. This, Low said, can tie the Fed’s hands when quicker action is warranted.

    Markets have fixated on the Fed’s “dot plot” rate forecasts — projections that often miss the mark as shifting data reshapes the outlook.

    Warsh argues the ​Fed is no better than markets at forecasting the future, so its decisions should look backward, not forward — with the “transitory” inflation call after the pandemic a case in point.

    For some investors, the ambiguity is the point. “The strategy behind pulling back ‌on forward guidance ⁠is forcing the market to take responsibility and enlisting the market in helping him do his job,” said Thomas Urano, co-chief investment officer at Sage Advisory.

    Robert Tipp, chief investment strategist and head of global bonds at PGIM Fixed Income, says less certainty from the Fed forces investors to price risk themselves rather than lean on Fed promises.

    He points to the prior hiking cycle as a cautionary tale, when Powell routinely talked down the rate outlook even while raising rates, softening the tightening he sought. “You need to make it more expensive and a little more uncertain,” Tipp said.

    Financial Conditions vs Fed Funds Rate and 10 Year Treasury Yield

    The strategy is a harder sell with inflation elevated, though. Low notes that Warsh made ​the case for stepping back and letting the market ​find its own equilibrium when the Fed is ⁠close to reaching its goals — back when inflation was under 3% and falling. It’s closer to 4% now, which Low sees as the source of much of the criticism aimed at Warsh’s approach.

    A PREMIUM FOR UNCERTAINTY

    Lou Brien, a market strategist at DRW Trading, argues markets aren’t refusing the job Warsh has handed them — they’re ​pricing what it costs to do it without a map. “The market wants to be compensated for it,” he said, “and the way they get compensated is through ​higher interest rates.”

    Part of that ⁠premium, Brien argues, reflects lingering questions about Warsh’s independence from the White House. Even setting that aside, Brien argues the Fed’s influence doesn’t vanish just because it stops explaining itself.

    Investors still parse statements, dissents and press-conference answers for clues to its reaction function. “The Fed casts a shadow, like it or not,” Brien said.

    Others point out that other Fed policymakers are still offering their views even as Warsh stays quiet.

    “The only one not providing forward guidance at the moment ⁠is Warsh,” said ​Gennadiy Goldberg, head of U.S. rates strategy at TD Securities. “This is the era of contingent guidance because it’s all contingent on ​the economic data.”

    For now, Warsh’s approach hasn’t resolved a key circularity, said Campbell. Warsh wants rates to be driven more by markets and data rather than the committee, while the market tries to divine his reaction function.

    Meanwhile, Warsh has left the door open on this ​approach. As Low notes, “they’re not necessarily committed to never using it again.”

    After years of criticism, Republicans are bringing the heat in their longstanding efforts to target former health official Dr. Anthony Fauci.

    A Senate committee voted Thursday along party lines to hold him in contempt of Congress after he repeatedly invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination at a hearing last week. The Justice Department must now decide whether to charge Fauci, which seems quite possible given how politicized the department has become under President Donald Trump.

    But targeting Fauci — some six years after the Covid pandemic began — is also a selective exercise for Republicans.

    And that’s because many of the offenses he stands accused of could potentially be lodged at the man who ran the first 10 months of the government’s Covid response from the most powerful perch: Trump.

    At the hearing last week, Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Chairman Rand Paul jumped right into his allegations against Fauci, the former head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

    “Publicly, Anthony Fauci promoted the theory that the virus arose naturally,” the Kentucky Republican said, “while privately he was well aware of a mountain of evidence suggesting the virus originated in the lab.”

    But if saying different things privately and publicly about Covid and failing to heed the evidence you’ve received is such a stark offense, Paul might want to have a gander at Trump’s track record.

    Back in September 2020, Bob Woodward reported that Trump had done much the same thing early in the pandemic. CNN’s timeline from back then lays it bare.

    Trump told Woodward on February 7, 2020, that Covid was “more deadly than even your strenuous flus.” But later that month, he likened the virus to the flu and even said the flu had a higher fatality rate, adding that “the risk to the American people remains very low.”

    Trump went on to acknowledge on March 19 that he had decided to minimize the virus in his public comments.

    “I wanted to always play it down,” he said. “I still like playing it down, because I don’t want to create a panic.”

    Woodward’s book also detailed some massive warning signs Trump received from his aides very early on, even as he would go on to repeatedly downplay the virus in public. As early as January 28, Trump’s deputy national security adviser said the virus could be as bad as the influenza pandemic of 1918, which killed as many as 50 million people, Woodward reported.

    Last week, Paul was asked on MS NOW whether he was also concerned about these issues with Trump.

    He didn’t directly answer the question, instead suggesting Fauci’s bigger offense was overseeing funding of foreign labs that do dangerous research. Paul and others have speculated the US-funded “gain-of-function” research might have contributed to the coronavirus outbreak, though it’s never been proven.

    But it’s worth noting that under the first Trump administration in 2017, an Obama-era moratorium on funding gain-of-function research was lifted.

    Republicans have criticized Fauci for invoking the Fifth Amendment at his hearing last week, with Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri saying that “no honest person pleads the Fifth”. But Trump in a 2022 civil case also invoked the Fifth hundreds of times.

    (Fauci’s invocation of the Fifth is somewhat different, in that he was pardoned by outgoing President Joe Biden in January 2025. But experts told CNN that Fauci still might have had some potential criminal liability outside the bounds of that pardon. Fauci also claimed Paul would try to get him to commit perjury.)

    Republicans have also suggested Fauci committed perjury in his prior testimony about gain-of-function research. Trump not only struggles mightily to tell the truth publicly — which Republicans are loath to hold him accountable for — but a federal judge in 2022 found Trump signed legal documents containing voter fraud claims that he knew were false.

    Some on the right have sharply criticized Fauci for the creation of Covid vaccines that they contend were dangerous and untested and possibly even more dangerous than Covid (which is false). But of course, that vaccine was created as part of a program, Operation Warp Speed, that was launched by Trump.

    And finally, many Republicans have blamed Fauci for overzealous Covid lockdowns. But there was also a time when Trump supported shutting down society. In fact, early in the pandemic, the president criticized Republican Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp for trying to open up too quickly in the spring of 2020.

    Not all of these examples are apples-to-apples. Fauci’s duties differed from Trump’s, and there was more of an onus on him to get the science right, given his expertise. He also advocated lockdowns much later into the pandemic than Trump did.

    But to the extent the nation’s Covid response went poorly six years ago, it would seem important to ask whether the political folks in charge of running it also had something to do with it.

    If the vaccine was so dangerous, for example, it would stand to reason people would be scrutinizing the decisions of Trump and others in his first administration in forging it and getting it approved, besides just Fauci.

    And if early Covid guidance is under the microscope, it seems weird to ignore the many contradictions and false and even bizarre statements about the virus (remember the bleach?) coming from Trump at a time when Americans were making life-and-death decisions about what they should do.

    But a true, broad, apolitical review of the Covid response apparently just isn’t in the cards.

    U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., cruised to victory in a GOP primary on Thursday evening in a race to replace outgoing Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee.

    With the nomination in tow, Blackburn is likely to become the next governor in the Volunteer State — a state that hasn’t elected a Democrat to its top executive role since 2006.

    Lee, who has served in the role since 2019, is term-limited and cannot seek re-election. He last won reelection in a 64.9% to 32.9% victory over Democratic challenger Jason Martin, a businessman and doctor.

    Notably, Lee did not endorse anyone in the three-way Republican race for the 2026 nomination but noted that he had a close relationship with Blackburn when she announced her candidacy.

    “I’ve been friends with Marsha for a long time, and she served as my congressman and representative in the General Assembly. I’m proud we have really good people running for governor in this state,” Lee told local outlets.

    Blackburn, for her own part, promised to continue focusing on issues that Republicans have made centerpieces to the GOP platform in Washington, D.C.

    She highlighted immigration as one such issue.

    “As governor, I’ll deport illegals, stop the flow of drugs and drug money. We will crack down on Cartels, restrict cash transfers to drug havens and hit criminals and illegals where it hurts — in their wallets,” Blackburn said in a campaign video.

    Blackburn also promised to prevent China from buying up Tennessee land, punctuating her commitment with a viral ad where she crushed a fortune cookie.

    “It doesn’t take a fortune cookie to figure it out. Here in Tennessee we’re going to stop communist China and protect Tennessee land,” she remarked.

    President Donald Trump also did not issue an endorsement in the race, saying that he had ties to one of Blackburn’s challengers: Rep. John Rose, R-Tenn.

    Rose, an 8th-generation farmer and the millionaire founder of Transcender Corp., an IT certification company, has served in the Tennessee legislature since 2019. In his gubernatorial campaign, he pitched himself as a homegrown candidate focused on local solutions to local problems.

    “I know that anything is achievable in Tennessee because I have lived it. Now, I’m asking for you to give me the chance to bring opportunity to all Tennesseans,” Rose said in a campaign video.

    On his website, Rose highlighted five key areas of focus, including education, infrastructure, healthcare, energy and economic and community development.

    A third candidate, State Rep. Monty Fritts, had run on a more aggressive, small-government platform.

    “My number one priority is leaving more money in your pockets, in your purses and in your country bankrolls rather than sending it to Nashville,” Fritts said in a campaign video.

    On his website, Fritts touted positions like shrinking the size of Tennessee’s budget, protecting citizen rights against encroaching government power and increasing parent input in education.

    Fritts attracted controversy earlier this year when, as part of his campaign, he called for a ban on mosques and other “pagan religions.”

    “Islam is a little different story than perhaps other religions are, in that it’s not necessarily a religion; it’s a political movement,” Fritts said. “It’s that movement that, if you don’t submit, perhaps you are executed. I feel that Islam is incongruent with both our U.S. and Tennessee Constitution,” Fritts told local outlets.

    Having cleared the primary, Blackburn will run in the state’s general election on Nov. 3 against her Democratic opponent, Memphis City Councilwoman and Chief Public Defender Jerri Green.

    Rep. Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., was defeated in a primary challenge on Thursday evening by Republican challenger Charlie Hatcher, a farmer and the state’s former commissioner of agriculture.

    Although the primary was far from a top-watched contest coming into the 2026 primaries, it served as a microcosm of larger forces at play in the Republican Party. From a break in endorsements between President Donald Trump and Tennessee’sRepublican Governor Bill Lee to millions being pumped into the district over environmental policy, the race attracted attention well beyond its borders.

    The Invest in Tomorrow Coalition super PAC had spent roughly $2 million opposing Ogles and supporting Hatcher. The group has raised $6.7 million this year, making Ogles a sizable portion of their spending this cycle.

    The way that Ogles sees it, it’s an attempt to show Republicans what happens when lawmakers attempt to claw back government funding for renewable energy sources.

    Like many other Republicans, Ogles has called to scale back renewable energy investments made under the Biden Administration.

    “When you have a group spending roughly $2 million in a Republican primary, that tells you how much money they’re making off of government subsidies, and they’re upset that the government welfare has been taken away from them,” Ogles told Fox News Digital in an interview.

    A Fox News Digital review of FEC filings discovered that the super PAC is bankrolled by Chris Larsen, the California-based billionaire chairman of Ripple, a financial technology company that, according to its website, offers crypto solutions for businesses.

    Larsen is also a frequent Democratic donor, having contributed $5,444,975 to support Kamala Harris’s failed presidential campaign.

    More than just his opposition to government-backed renewable energy initiatives, Ogles thinks it’s his proximity to Trump that has made him a target.

    “It’s because I’m close to the president. It is because I am outspoken. And quite frankly, it is because I speak plainly on these issues,” Ogles said.

    For his own part, Hatcher, a fifth-generation Tennessee dairy farmer, has pitched himself as someone unencumbered by the political scene and ensnaring interests.

    “I think there’s something missing in Washington. There’s a lack of farmer common sense. There’s a lack of work ethic. One of my strengths is problem-solving, looking for solutions, looking for collaborations and supporting the Trump Administration and Speaker Johnson on their agenda,” Hatcher said in a campaign video.

    Notably, Tennessee’s Republican governor put his weight behind Hatcher late on Tuesday evening, citing a personal relationship between them.

    “He served as my commissioner of agriculture; I know Charlie. I know his conservative values and how much he loves our country. Charlie has stood with President Trump since day one,” Lee said in a video.

    Trump, who has endorsed Ogles, reaffirmed his support for the conservative firebrand ahead of the primary.

    “Andy will be really enshrined as one of the best congressmen that you’ll ever see. He’s just fantastic,” Trump said. “Andy has always been there when we needed him and when I needed him. He’s been a great help. He’s been a source of inspiration to a lot of people in Congress,” Trump said in a post to Truth Social earlier this year.

    New York City democratic socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani repeatedly sidestepped questions Thursday about reported plans to launch a public pressure campaign this fall pushing tax hikes on wealthy New Yorkers and corporations.

    Mamdani reportedly plans to build public support after Labor Day for similar proposals that Gov. Kathy Hochul previously rejected in early 2026. The reported push is expected ahead of the New York Legislature’s return to Albany in January 2027 and Hochul’s re-election campaign this fall, according to The New York Post.

    During an interview with Fox 5 New York, Mamdani repeatedly declined to answer questions about the potential campaign before later saying such discussions would only come after the November election.

    Asked whether he had spoken with Hochul about the reported campaign, Mamdani did not answer directly, instead using the opportunity to tout the opening of 2,000 free child care seats for New Yorkers through their policy efforts.

    “The governor and I are in constant communication and, frankly, I appreciate her partnership because if it wasn’t for the governor, then we wouldn’t have been able to stand together to announce that we had more than 5,000 New Yorkers come forward to apply for these 2,000 free child care seats,” he said. “And I’m so excited about that, and the fact that we’re going to expand to 12,000, and the work that’s still to come.”

    The reporter then pressed Mamdani on whether the Democratic Socialists of America would join the potential campaign this fall, but he again declined to answer directly, saying his focus remains on the present.

    “My focus right now is where we are, which is August, and ensuring that everything that we’re doing is keeping New Yorkers safe amidst a heat wave and preparing for the school year,” Mamdani said. “A lot of the conversation about what comes after November, I think, is a conversation for what comes after November.”

    “So you don’t plan to launch a campaign to tax the rich before the November election?” the reporter asked.

    “The conversations I’ve been having with the governor and with my team are about the here and now and there will always be time for the conversations that come after that,” Mamdani said.

    The reported campaign would revive a previous push by Mamdani to close the city’s multibillion-dollar budget gap through tax increases, a proposal Hochul previously rejected. Mamdani’s earlier plan called for raising the city’s personal income tax rate on filers earning $1 million or more, a move he projected could generate roughly $3 billion annually, while also increasing corporate tax rates.

    As an alternative, Hochul and Mamdani jointly advanced the state’s first pied-à-terre tax, an annual surcharge on certain high-value second homes, which passed in May 2026. State and city officials have projected the measure could raise about $500 million annually.

    Mamdani also said his May 2026 executive budget closed what his administration described as an inherited $12 billion budget gap, crediting aggressive savings, new investments, his partnership with Albany and new tax revenue, including the pied-à-terre tax.

    Mamdani’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital.
