President Donald Trump celebrated the primary defeat of longtime political foe Alexander Vindman on Tuesday night after Democratic Florida State Rep. Angie Nixon pulled off a stunning upset in the primary that sought to flip the seat held by Sen. Ashley Moody, R-Fla.

This will be the first general election race for Moody, outgoing Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis’ handpicked successor for former senator and current Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and it will be an ideological battle between a leading legal mind and one of the Democratic Socialists of America’s up-and-coming figures in Nixon.

Trump dunks on Impeachment 1 witness

The Obama-Biden establishment Democrat era sees another one of its national political figures suffer a loss in Florida, a state that once was former President Barack Obama’s key swing state.

“SleazeBag Vindman loses tonight to a Radical Left Lunatic,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post Tuesday night. “How cool is that???”

Vindman, a retired Army Lt. Col. who fled Soviet Ukraine as a child with his twin brother Eugene, rose to prominence as a Russia hawk during the final years of the Obama administration’s Pentagon.

Vindman testified during the first Trump impeachment trial that he “was asked to serve” on the National Security Council in July 2018, serving under fellow impeachment witness Fiona Hill. He became a polarizing national political figure when he testified during the 2019 House impeachment inquiry about Trump’s phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Dems again burn big money opposing DSA candidate

Vindman, backed by the Democrat establishment, raised 16 times as much money as Nixon, but like the big-ticket loss in the Michigan Democratic primary race won by Abdul El-Sayed against Rep. Haley Stevens, D-Mich., it proved to be money wasted before November’s midterm general elections.

That comes as Democrats have widely reported issues with fundraising right now. They trail Republicans’ national apparatus and Trump’s MAGA coffers by hundreds of millions, showing the power of incumbency, despite the long historical challenges of midterm elections swinging power back to the opposition party.

Vindman raised $16.27 million to roughly $1 million for the DSA-backed Nixon, according to federal filings. Despite the nearly 16-to-1 cash advantage, Vindman lost in roughly a 12-point blowout.

That comes on the heels of the estimated $70 million spent on Stevens.

Democrats, whose small-donor platform ActBlue is under congressional investigation, could use those millions against the RNC’s reported $128.5 million June cash on hand and Trump’s reported $800 million.

Florida delivers Election Night results fast: A contrast of red state-blue state

“Florida proved there’s no excuse for elections to drag on for days or weeks,” Republican National Committee (RNC) spokeswoman Ally Triolo wrote in a statement to Fox News Digital. “Floridians voted, ballots were counted, and we woke up knowing who won. It can be done — and it should be the standard nationwide.”

Defeated California independent mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt marveled in a trolling X post on election integrity.

“Wait. How did Florida count all their votes already?” Pratt wrote. “I was reliably informed democracy takes 5 weeks.”

RNC Chair Joe Gruters, who resides in southwest Florida, called that quick result shot to Fox News Digital weeks ago, repeating a long-hailed refrain by Gov. DeSantis.

“I always say, go look at Florida, my home state, state of 23 million people, a state where literally within 90 minutes, we can give you results everybody has full faith and confidence – that’s with Democrat and Republican supervisor of elections across the state,” Gruters said.

“We could do this nationwide. It’s not rocket science, but when you have a party that does everything they possibly can to cheat, lie, and steal to win elections, when it’s all about control and power, rather than trying to make sure we protect democracy, we got to do everything we can to put the ship in the right direction, and that’s what we’ve done at the party. We’re going to continue to do anything we can make sure these elections are safe and secure.”

Florida won redistricting, but Nixon won Democratic voter cred

Nixon sparked national headlines during Florida’s legislative redistricting battle when she pulled out a bright pink megaphone on the House floor to protest a GOP-drafted congressional map.

Undeterred by a state reprimand, Nixon stood by her actions, famously stating that “fighting for democracy is more important than having decorum” and declaring that she had no regrets about speaking out. That viral floor protest helped define Nixon’s political identity as a confrontational progressive willing to break norms, serving as a signature centerpiece for her high-profile U.S. Senate campaign.

In the primary, the newly redrawn maps shifted competitive dynamics across the state, while Nixon’s stand against redistricting became her primary rallying cry against the well-backed establishment.

In her campaign, Nixon urged voters to “make sure you wear your pink to the polls.”

Moody, who served six years as Florida’s attorney general before DeSantis appointed her to fill the seat vacated by Rubio, enters the general election with a résumé built around the issues Republicans are likely to put front and center: crime, fraud and public safety.

By contrast, Nixon comes to the race from activism on the pavement, not the courtroom. The Jacksonville Democrat built her profile as a progressive organizer and state lawmaker, championing government-run healthcare, expanded social programs and other priorities aligned with DSA.

The Florida Senate seat will be a target for the cash-strapped Democratic National Committee, but it will have to invest its resources of time, energy and money into a DSA candidate opposing a tough on crime fraud-fighter.

Ohio death row inmate, backed by ex-sheriff and celebrities, asks parole board for full pardon

An inmate sentenced to death in Ohio had a rare opportunity this week to ask for a full pardon before the state’s parole board, after spending three decades on death row for a double murder that he insists he did not commit.

Tyrone Noling, 54, of Alliance, presented his case Tuesday to the Ohio Parole Board. Backed by the Ohio Innocence Project, an organization that works to prevent wrongful convictions and exonerate wrongfully convicted prisoners, Noling assembled a growing body of evidence to share during the hearing.

That includes recanted witness testimony, changed stances by the sheriff and one of the jurors at his trial, and clues pointing to an already executed killer as the possible perpetrator.

His case has been the subject of documentaries and true-crime podcasts and garnered celebrity attention from Kim Kardashian and actors Hilarie Burton and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who all support his exoneration. The case also called into question the practice of convicting and sentencing inmates to death for crimes to which no physical evidence had linked them, according to the Death Penalty Information Center, a nonprofit that doesn’t take a position on capital punishment but provides research on how it is carried out.

Noling was convicted in the 1990 murders of an elderly couple in their home, which he has always said he did not commit. In lieu of physical evidence, some witnesses gave statements against Noling during his trial, but later recanted their statements and said they were initially pressured by the prosecutor to give them, the Death Penalty Information Center says.

Following Tuesday’s hearing, the first for an Ohio death row inmate since 2020, the parole board will issue its recommendation to Gov. Mike DeWine, who has the final say. DeWine, a Republican, called in June for abolishment of the death penalty — saying his stance has changed because he no longer views capital punishment as a deterrent to violent crime.

Death row inmates don’t typically land clemency hearings until they have an execution date, which Noling does not, so winning Tuesday’s hearing was a victory. He seeks release from prison and has said he would not accept a commutation to life without parole for a crime he didn’t commit.

Noling was convicted in the April 5, 1990, killings of Bearnhardt and Cora Hartig, both 81, at their Portage County home. The couple’s bodies were discovered on the kitchen floor of their Atwater Township home by a neighbor who noticed their lawn mower had been in front of their home for several days. Bearnhardt Hartig had been shot three times and his wife five times with a .25-caliber automatic handgun. The house had been ransacked.

Authorities said Noling, who had just turned 18 at the time, was part of a group involved in home robberies of elderly couples. Three others in the group — 14, 15 and 16 at the time — implicated Noling in the slayings of the Hartigs during a burglary but later retracted their statements, saying that police pressured them to name Noling as the shooter.

Initial aggravated burglary charges brought against Noling were dropped in 1992, but a grand jury reindicted him in 1995 for the Hartig murders. He was sentenced to death in 1996.

No physical evidence tied him to the crime, and no murder weapon was ever found. Noling’s advocates say evidence, including law enforcement notes and a cigarette butt found in the Hartigs’ driveway, points to two other potential suspects. One is Dan Wilson, who was executed by lethal injection in Ohio in 2009 for a different crime. Noling’s lawyers wrote in court documents that a man told authorities that his foster brother, Wilson, bragged about committing the crime.

Former Portage County Sheriff Ken Howe, now 83, will be among a long line of witnesses testifying on Noling’s behalf at Tuesday’s hearing. In an Associated Press interview, he said that there were red flags at the time, and evidence that’s piled up since then has persuaded him to take Noling’s side.

“I believe that these boys were, and are, innocent,” he said.

Portage County Prosecutor Connie Lewandowski and Caitlin Flanagan, an attorney for a team representing Noling, did not immediately return separate phone messages seeking comment.

Following the hearing, the board will deliberate in executive session and is expected to deliver a recommendation to the governor by Aug. 25.

She’s lived through unimaginable grief. Her advice: “Reach for the joy.”

“Everyone’s grief is different,” says Kate Doerge — and after experiencing heartbreaking loss in her own family, she’s made it her mission to help others find their way through the most difficult time in their life.

Doerge lost her father to heart failure, her mother in a car crash just five days before Christmas, and then, in 2022, her 16-year-old daughter Penny — “a bright light” who lived a love-filled life while coping with a rare disease, neurofibromatosis.

“You hold your grief with you always,” she says. “But what I would say to that is, you can hold grief and joy in the same space.”

Doerge became a certified grief coach and wrote a book, Reimagining Grief, which she describes as the book she wishes she’d had when she needed it — one that illuminates a path for moving through grief with agency instead of just letting it wash over you.

Not moving on, moving through

“I think sometimes people feel guilty for moving on. You’re never ‘moving on.’ You’re moving through,” Doerge says.

She encourages people to “reach for the joy,” even in times of darkness.

“To be able to infuse, a little bit, that opportunity of ‘reach for the joy’ — what are the things that bring you joy? You can go to the cemetery, but what are the flowers he loved? Wear his favorite color. So you’re still moving through it and you’re moving forward.”

Other ways of reaching for joy?

“It’s the little things,” she says. “It’s turning on music you love driving down the road. And what song do you want to hear? What’s going to bring you joy? Getting outside with your dogs or with a friend. Putting your face in the sunshine. A great cup of coffee. You know, it doesn’t have to be a lot.”

Connect with others

A key piece of advice, Doerge says, is to connect with others.

It’s the No. 1 thing on the list she calls the five actions of grief — not the five stages you may have heard of in the past, but five actions that can help you carry grief through your life.

“We as human beings need each other. In order to move through life and loss, you need someone by your side. And there is scientific research that has showed that with connection — and it doesn’t have to be big, whether it’s a grief group or it’s a runner’s club or going to your exercise class — connection reduces the amount of prolonged grief. It reduces the amount of PTSD, anxiety and depression,” she explains.

“And so I think that was the first step, the first action I took, because I also recognized grief is isolating. It is, it can be really lonely.”

Celebrate your loved one

The second item on the action list is to celebrate your loved one, even in the midst of sadness.

“It’s hard to celebrate,” Doerge says. “I think it’s the little things. … It’s about remembering what your loved ones loved and doing something in their honor. Wearing the color that they loved. Serving this food that they loved. You know, the little things of playing the music that they listened to all the time. What’s ways you can connect with them, and therefore you’re celebrating them.

“You’re keeping their legacy alive by doing the things they loved.”

Be open to signs

Action No. 3 has a spiritual dimension: Be open to signs.

Doerge describes this as a kind of faith — not the same as religious faith, but a belief that you’re on the path you’re meant to be. It means looking for moments of connection and being open to signs that your loved one is still with you.

For her, a glimpse of a butterfly is a sign that evokes her daughter Penny, who wore a little butterfly necklace.

“This idea of a butterfly represents an inextinguishable soul always drawn to the light. And that’s so Penny,” she says. “And how beautiful is it for us to open our eyes to the signs?”

Get moving

The next action on the list: Get moving. The power of physical movement can help you push through emotional loss.

“When people say, I can’t imagine losing a child, I’ll say, Imagine if you did. Imagine instead of staying in bed with the covers over your head, not wanting to get out of bed, what would your child want you to do? They would want you to get up, one foot in front of the other,” Doerge says.

“Just get yourself outside,” she continues. “If you show yourself you can do that, then you can keep going. You’re showing others you’re moving forward. So it is critical to move that energy, to move that anxiety through your body.”

Turn pain into purpose

The last of the five actions Doerge lists in her book is to turn pain into purpose.

During the last weeks of her daughter’s life, when Penny had developed an inoperable brain tumor, the family chose “to fill the house with love and light and create this love cocoon.” They held a celebration of life filled with her favorite songs.

The next day, she says, she and her husband woke up and realized they needed to do something to harness all that love and support. For them, it meant “we have to find a cure for the condition that took her life.”

They founded Penny’s Flight Foundation to fund scientific research to find a cure for neurofibromatosis, a genetic condition that causes tumors to grow on nerve pathways, and to educate the public about this little-known condition that’s actually more common than ALS.

“150,000 people have NF, 30,000 people have ALS. Everyone knows of ALS because of the Ice Bucket Challenge and all the awareness. But no one knows about NF,” a condition that looks different in different patients.

How to offer support

What advice does she have for those who don’t know what to say to someone stricken with grief?

She keeps it simple: “You know, I’m thinking about you. Even if it’s a simple text, just that connection. And knowing that they are supported means so much.”

“Let’s go for a walk, I’m here for you,” she offers. “And you know what the reality is? It may take time, but just keep showing them you’re there for them and you love them and you’re supporting them.”

She also suggests some alternatives to just saying “I’m sorry” — or not knowing what to say at all.

“What I have learned through all of this is how important it is when someone comes up to you and says,’ I remember the time your mother did this,’ or ‘I loved playing tennis with your mother because of that.’ And that is so beautiful, because that’s a way that you’re connecting. You’re keeping their legacy alive.”

“You create a connection by just taking that step,” she says. “Not only are you keeping her legacy alive, but you’re creating the connection. … So even if you don’t know what to say, just to say I’m here with you, my arms are wrapping around you, I love you.”

WASHINGTON, Aug 19 (Reuters) – A Democratic board member of the ​John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts said she will seek a court order blocking Republican President Donald ‌Trump’s name from being newly inscribed on the building’s facade, months after a federal judge said only Congress could rename the iconic Washington venue.

late on Tuesday, Democratic U.S. Representative Joyce Beatty said the board had acted in “naked defiance” of the judge’s prior decision in the case.

The center’s board, ​stocked with Trump-appointed allies, voted 20-3 on August 13 to alter the building’s signage to read “The John F. Kennedy Center ​for the Performing Arts Restored and Renovated by President Donald J. Trump,” while naming the center’s grounds ⁠the “President Donald J. Trump Plaza.” The board also voted to close the center for two years.

Beatty asked for additional proceedings in ​the case in order to seek a ruling halting the return of Trump’s name to the building, which absent court intervention could ​happen as early as September 8.

“Adding the words ‘Restored and Renovated by,’ or ‘Endowed by,’ before President Trump’s name, and renaming the ground on which the building sits, provides no lawful basis to ignore this Court’s decision and impose Donald Trump’s name on a memorial dedicated by the Congress exclusively to a ​different President,” the filing said.

Lawyers for the Trump administration said in the joint filing that they disagreed with Beatty’s arguments and that “the ​record will demonstrate the Board’s prudence.”

Beatty, a member of the Kennedy Center’s board by virtue of her position in Congress, sued the Trump administration ‌last year ⁠after the board changed the Kennedy Center’s name and altered its signage to place Trump’s name before that of President Kennedy.

U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper ruled in May that the board overstepped its authority by unilaterally renaming the site, which was created as a memorial to Kennedy after the Democratic president’s 1963 assassination.

Cooper said the board had wide discretion to make operational decisions about the center but ​could not rename it. “Congress gave ​the Kennedy Center its name, ⁠and only Congress can change it,” the judge ruled.

Trump’s name was removed from the building’s white marble facade in June, with a large tarp draped over the wall since then. A federal appeals ​court in July denied the administration’s bid to keep the name up while it appeals Cooper’s ruling.

In ​Tuesday’s filing, the ⁠Trump administration said the tarp and scaffolding were erected for water testing and structural repairs to a roof overhang.

Beatty’s lawyers called that explanation a “pretextual justification,” arguing the tarp and scaffolding are meant to “frustrate the intent of the Court’s order that the Center be returned to a ⁠memorial exclusively ​honoring President Kennedy.”

Trump’s push to renovate and rename the Kennedy Center is part ​of the president’s broader efforts to reshape Washington. Last week, an appeals court ordered the administration to stop construction on a $400 million ballroom Trump plans at the site ​of the White House’s demolished East Wing.

Sen. Darline Graham, the late Sen. Lindsey Graham’s sister who was appointed to fill his vacant seat, admitted during a South Carolina GOP Senate debate that she is “not that informed on national security” as she campaigns for a full six-year term.

Graham made the candid admission just days before South Carolina’s GOP Senate runoff between her and Rep. Ralph Norman, R-S.C., after a moderator asked whether Taiwan and the South China Sea are national security issues for the United States. She responded that national security is “not my thing” and “not my area of expertise.”

The political newcomer has the backing of President Donald Trump, who urged her to seek a full term and endorsed her candidacy after she was appointed to the Senate by South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster.

“Are Taiwan and the South China Sea national security issues for the United States, and if so, why or how?” the moderator asked.

After the debate, Graham told reporters that South Carolinians are “worried about their pocketbooks more than they’re worried about the South China Sea, quite honestly,” according to the Post and Courier.

Graham’s spin room comments echoed how she has previously described the differences between herself and her late brother, who made foreign policy and national security a hallmark of his Senate career.

During a July interview on Fox News’ “Hannity,” Graham recalled urging her brother to focus more on the everyday issues facing voters rather than national security.

“I would watch him, and I’d be like, ‘Lindsey, are you just talking about national security all the time?’” Graham said, pointing instead to issues such as groceries, gas and healthcare.

Graham’s response to the Taiwan question wasn’t the only gaffe she had during Tuesday night’s debate. Graham is also facing heat for saying that South Carolina was home to 50 million residents, when in fact it only has about 5 million.

“Darlene Graham doesn’t even know how many people live in South Carolina! Here she is saying 50 million people live here. Darlene darling, approximately 5.5 million people, not 50 million people live in South Carolina. I can’t even right now with this Senate race,” said Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., on X.

Moderna stock more than doubles after melanoma vaccine trial shows “landmark moment”

Drugmaker Moderna’s stock more than doubled on Wednesday morning after the company announced a successful experimental mRNA vaccine to treat melanoma, the deadly skin cancer from which more than 8,500 people are expected to die this year.

Moderna and Merck, its drug development partner, said the novel treatment prevented melanoma from returning or spreading in a study of high-risk melanoma patients.

Shares of Moderna surged $91.52, or 145%, to $154.48 in morning trading after touching an intraday high of $163. Merck’s shares rose $14.35, or 10.6%, to $149.52.

The study, which focused on people who had undergone surgery to remove a melanoma, tested the drug’s efficacy at reducing the risk of the cancer’s return.

The study tested Moderna’s personalized cancer vaccine intismeran in combination with Merck’s Keytruda, its cancer immunotherapy drug. Together, the drugs kept the cancer from returning for longer and prevented it from spreading to other organs.

The drugmakers plan to present the unpublished data to regulators at an upcoming international medical meeting.

“Landmark moment”

“Today’s results represent a landmark moment for adjuvant melanoma treatment,” Professor Georgina Long, the study’s principal investigator and the chair of University of Sydney’s Melanoma Medical Oncology and Translational Research, said in a statement Wednesday.

Long said the study is the first of its kind to show that treatment can “reduce the risk of recurrence or death in patients” with melanoma.

The advancement “has the potential to establish a new treatment paradigm in the adjuvant melanoma setting, helping patients remain cancer-free for longer,” she added.

More than 234,680 cases of melanoma will be diagnosed in the U.S. in 2026, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. Among the deadliest forms of skin cancer, melanoma starts in melanocytes, the cells that give the skin its color. Melanoma is characterized by the uncontrollable growth of these cells, according to the Mayo Clinic.

“By intervening earlier in the course of disease, when many cancers are considered most treatable, the goal of adjuvant therapy given after surgery is to increase the possibility of cure for more patients,” Dr. Dean Y. Li, president of Merck Research Laboratories, said in a statement.

The findings amount to a “pivotal moment for the field of cancer research,” added Moderna CEO Stéphane Bancel. “For many years, the idea of creating an mRNA treatment designed specifically for an individual patient’s cancer was aspirational. We are now helping turn that vision into a reality.”

Moderna shares are still far from their pandemic-era peak in late 2021 and 2022, when its stock soared on global demand for its COVID-19 vaccine.
