    • Summary
    • Supreme Court in June blocked Trump from firing Fed officials at will
    • Trump has been pushing Fed to lower interest rates
    • Majority of Fed board members were appointed by Trump’s predecessor

Aug 26 (Reuters) – Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook’s lawyer on Wednesday offered a detailed rebuttal to the accusations of mortgage fraud that U.S. President Donald Trump asserts provide cause to fire her, saying they rely “on untried and unproven allegations of criminal wrongdoing.”

“Governor Cook has never committed mortgage fraud or any intentional wrongdoing, and there is no legally cognizable cause for removing her from the Federal Reserve Board,” Cook’s attorney Abbe David Lowell said in a letter to the White House.

Trump has been trying to sack Cook for more than a year in an unprecedented effort widely seen as part of a broader assault on the U.S. central bank’s independence. It’s the first time a U.S. president has attempted to remove a central banker since the institution’s founding more than a century ago, and would give Trump, who has long pushed for lower interest rates, the ability to install a replacement sympathetic to his view.

Mortgage fraud allegations against Cook, the first Black woman to serve as a Fed governor, were first levied last August by Federal Housing Finance Agency Director William Pulte. The accusations were promptly amplified by Trump, who announced on social media that he was dismissing her over them.

Cook denied any wrongdoing, calling the allegations a pretext to remove her for monetary policy differences, and she sued to keep her job.

In June, the U.S. Supreme Court refused to allow her removal in a 5-4 ruling that definitively protects Fed officials from being fired at will by a president. It has since returned the case to the lower court.

The decision left open the question of whether there was any wrongdoing that could serve as cause for termination, provided Cook was given the opportunity to defend herself.

    FED INDEPENDENCE

Earlier this month, the White House took a fresh run at Trump’s firing effort, telling Cook in a letter dated August 5 that the president was “considering” removing her from her role “due to there being sufficient reason to believe that you made false statements on one or more mortgage agreements.”

The letter told Cook that “this is your chance to respond” and set a deadline of ‌August 26, two days before Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh is scheduled to give his first address to a group of global central bankers and economists gathered in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, for the Kansas City Fed’s annual economic symposium.

Warsh has not addressed Cook’s case since taking the reins at the Fed in May. But he has publicly echoed past Fed chiefs and the broader economic consensus that any loss of political independence for the central bank’s monetary policy decision-making would imperil its inflation-fighting credibility.

Trump repeatedly threatened to fire Warsh’s predecessor, Jerome Powell, for not lowering interest rates, and his Department of Justice pursued a criminal investigation of Powell over building renovations that a federal judge found to be a thinly disguised effort to pressure him into resigning.

Once Powell’s term as Fed chief ended and Warsh began his, the Republican president redirected his criticisms at other Fed board members, a majority of whom, including Cook, were appointed by Trump’s Democratic predecessor, Joe Biden.

In a criminal referral to the Justice Department last August, Pulte suggested Cook had committed bank fraud punishable by 30 years in prison because publicly available mortgage documents appeared to simultaneously claim more than one home as her primary residence. The referral was one of several Pulte made containing similar allegations against other targets of Trump’s disfavor.

There has been no indication a criminal investigation into Cook is moving forward. A Reuters report last year showed Cook had indicated to a lender that one of the homes at issue was a vacation property. Reuters also reported the local tax authority in Michigan said Cook had not broken rules for tax breaks on a home there that she declared as her primary residence.

The letter this month to Cook, signed by White House Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino, said that even if there wasn’t fraud, Cook’s misstatements constitute negligence that calls into question her trustworthiness as a Fed governor.

US judge refuses to force extradition of jailed ICE agent from Texas to Minnesota

    • Summary
    • Ruling clears way for immigration officer’s release on Thursday
    • Christian Castro charged with assault for Minneapolis shooting
    • Minnesota officials say Castro poses a flight risk if freed

Aug 26 (Reuters) – A federal judge on Wednesday denied a request by Minnesota to force Texas Governor Greg Abbott to immediately extradite a jailed U.S. immigration agent facing assault charges for shooting ‌a Venezuelan man in the leg during last winter’s deportation surge in Minneapolis.

The ruling clears the way for Christian Castro, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer arrested by Texas Rangers acting on a Minnesota court warrant, to be freed from custody on Thursday. That’s when a 90-day detention limit for someone awaiting extradition under Texas law is due to expire.

Minnesota authorities had argued in court that Castro, jailed in the Gulf Coast border city of Brownsville, Texas, since May 29, was a flight risk if he were released.

Castro is wanted in Minnesota to face four counts of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and a charge of falsely reporting a crime.

The charges stem from an incident in which Castro shot and wounded Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis on January 14, at the height of U.S. President Donald Trump’s deportation campaign in Minneapolis, then fabricated his reason for using lethal force against a man who was unarmed, prosecutors say.

Castro could not be reached for comment and it was unclear whether he has retained a lawyer.

The Minneapolis deportation sweep, called Operation Metro Surge, drew weeks of demonstrations and confrontations between protesters and ICE agents in which immigration officers fatally shot two U.S. citizens.

The case surrounding the shooting of Sosa-Celis, a Venezuelan national, has lingered as a flashpoint between the governors of Texas and Minnesota ‌over immigration control.

Abbott, a fellow Republican, has been a supporter of Trump’s deportation efforts, while Minnesota’s Democratic leaders, including Governor Tim Walz, have condemned Trump’s surge of armed ICE patrols in Minneapolis and other cities.

In a court brief filed on Monday, Abbott questioned whether Castro should be classified as a fugitive, and thus subject to extradition, because he did not flee Minnesota but rather was reassigned to his home base in Texas by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, ICE’s parent agency, after the shooting.

Minnesota authorities countered that the issue of how or why Castro ended up in Texas is immaterial, and that the U.S. Constitution and federal law require states to extradite people wanted for crimes in another state.

Siding with Texas officials a day after hearing arguments in the case, U.S. District Judge Fernando Rodriguez Jr. ruled that Abbott had not been shown to have refused the extradition request, only that he had not yet made a decision. Rodriguez concluded that the law does not require Abbott to turn over a fugitive within a certain time frame.

Rodriguez acknowledged the possibility that Castro could attempt to flee the U.S. after his release and “impose a hardship on Minnesota’s prosecutorial efforts,” but found that prospect does not alter his legal conclusions.

On Wednesday, representatives of President Donald Trump filed a brief in the New York Court of Appeals, arguing that the court should throw out his liability finding in a $464 million civil fraud case that centered on Trump’s real estate valuations.

The appeal argues that the case had several legal flaws that should have prevented it from being heard in the first place.

“This case should have never been brought, and the judgment cannot stand,” the appeal reads. “This case is extremely unusual; it involves not only reams of improper statements targeting President Trump, his family, and his businesses, but also a decision to apply [New York law] against those targets in a completely unprecedented and unlawful way.”

The appeal is the latest instance of President Donald Trump pushing back against what he has characterized as politically charged lawfare that he endured between his two administrations. It also gives Trump a renewed opportunity to push back against some of the penalties that still apply to him from that verdict.

LETITIA JAMES HAMMERED AFTER NY MEDICAID FRAUD UNIT FUNDING FROZEN OVER INEFFECTIVE ENFORCEMENT

NEW YORK, NY – FEBRUARY 16: Attorney General Letitia James speaks during a press conference following a verdict against former U.S. President Donald Trump in a civil fraud trial on February 16, 2024 in New York City. Justice Arthur Engoron ruled against the former president finding him liable for conspiring to manipulating his networth and fining him $335 million and imposing a three year ban from serving in top roles at any NY company. The judge also banned Eric and Donald Trump Jr. for two years as well as a fine of more than four million dollars.(Michael M. Santiago/Getty Images)

In 2022, New York Attorney General Letitia James sued Trump, alleging 200 instances of fraud. Specifically, her office alleged that Trump had routinely overvalued properties in New York City in order to secure favorable loans or insurance rates in violation of New York Executive Law § 63(12). The provision instructs the attorney general to prosecute cases of repeated fraudulent or illegal acts.

The law defines fraud as “any device, scheme or artifice to defraud and any deception, misrepresentation, concealment, suppression, false pretense, false promise or unconscionable contractual provision.”

Trump was found liable in 2023.

As a result, Trump was required to pay $355 million plus interest in damages and was banned from serving as an officer or director of any New York company for two years. He was also banned from applying for loans from any New York bank or financial institution for three years. Although an intermediate appeals court later vacated the monetary award, Trump’s lawyers argue the underlying liability finding and the remaining restrictions should also be overturned.

APOLOGIES AND CASH HEADED TO ALLEGED ‘WEAPONIZATION’ VICTIMS IN BILLION-DOLLAR TRUMP SETTLEMENT

NEW YORK, NEW YORK – JANUARY 11: Former U.S. President Donald Trump speaks as he leaves the courtroom during his civil fraud trial at New York Supreme Court on January 11, 2024 in New York City. Santiago/Getty Images)

The appeal submitted on Wednesday argues against the verdict along five key lines.

The document argues that Attorney General James lacked the authority to bring the case, noting that the case involves private commercial transactions rather than harm to the public. It also contends that Trump’s valuations reflected subjective estimates that lenders independently evaluated rather than fraudulent misrepresentations.

“The only supposed ‘victims’ here are a handful of ultrasophisticated banks and insurers that have never claimed to be injured, were eager to do business with President Trump and his family, and made over $100 million from these transactions,” the appeal states.

The appeal further argues that the prosecution’s premise of overvaluation is based on the misguided idea that real estate has one objective value — and that deviations from that value must be fraud.

“Under that breathtakingly broad theory, NYAG can second-guess any business transaction in this State on almost any imagined grounds,” the filing reads.

And on the penalties, the appeal argues that the $450 million disgorgement is excessive, unlawful and even unconstitutional.

Finally, the appeal argues that the politically charged nature of the case, on its own, should have been enough to halt its consideration.

“NYAG cannot point to a single Section 63(12) enforcement action against similarly situated developers (or any other type of defendant) based on practices comparable to those alleged here,” the filing states.

TRUMP PICKS JAMES MCDONALD TO LEAD POWERFUL SOUTHERN DISTRICT OF NEW YORK AFTER JAY CLAYTON’S DEPARTURE

“Ms. James repeatedly called President Trump a ‘criminal’; promised to ‘investigate President Trump and his business transactions,’ ‘review … Trump-related real estate transactions,’ and ‘take on … his business in New York’; and threatened President Trump’s ‘family’ and ‘anyone in his orbit,” the document states.

James’ office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital.

NEW YORK, Aug 26 (Reuters) – A U.S. judge on Wednesday dismissed a lawsuit by Elon Musk’s X seeking to void a New York state law requiring social media ‌companies to disclose how they monitor hate speech, extremism, harassment, foreign political interference and disinformation.

U.S. District Judge John Cronan in Manhattan rejected X’s argument that the Stop Hiding Hate Act violated the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment by exposing it to lawsuits and big fines unless it disclosed “highly sensitive and controversial speech” that the state found objectionable.

The judge said requiring X to report “purely factual and uncontroversial information” about its content moderation policies was reasonably related to New York’s interest in letting people make informed choices about using social media.

“Businesses always exercise their discretion, judgment, and opinions when deciding what goods or services to offer,” Cronan wrote. “Burger King chooses to generally offer higher-calorie items than, say, Sweetgreen, but the disclosure of calorie information remains purely factual. So too here.”

    blob:https://www.cbsnews.com/6d39d9f1-07aa-451a-bc26-f4da80a4162e

    “我认为,到本十年末,‘智能’机器人将开始在部分体力任务上与人类竞争——例如建筑和 hospitality(注:原文为hospitality,译为‘酒店餐饮、服务业’)行业,”他写道。

Bill Gates issues stark warning about AI’s impact on American jobs

    August 26, 2026 / 6:33 PM EDT / CBS News

    By Mary Cunningham

Bill Gates is sounding the alarm about artificial intelligence, warning in a new essay that the technology will rapidly transform the U.S. labor market and put millions of jobs at risk.

AI is changing the economy much faster than previous technological revolutions, advancing at what the Microsoft co-founder called a “mind-blowing rate” and leaving less time to prepare for employment disruptions.

“AI will take on work in law, customer service, medicine, software, and manufacturing. It will hit these industries rapidly, over the course of a decade rather than a few generations,” Gates wrote in an article posted on his personal website published on Wednesday. “There will be some new jobs, but without the right policies, there will be far fewer than exist today.”

While Gates outlines what he describes as a number of risks posed by AI in his nearly 6,000-word essay, he focuses particularly on how the technology could affect American workers. As AI’s reasoning skills improve, it’s becoming a more direct competitor to human cognitive abilities, he said.

“The biggest shift for workers will happen when AI provides nearly error-free work,” he wrote. “At that point, it will be able to function on its own without a human checking in on it, and companies will have every economic incentive to let it.”

AI is already changing white-collar professions as companies offload tasks such as data analysis to AI, reducing the need for human labor, Gates noted. He also expressed concern for young people entering the workforce amid fewer job openings.

But desk jobs aren’t the only ones at risk, Gates warned. AI will soon be able to do physical work just as well as humans, he argued, which could weigh on blue-collar jobs like construction.

    blob:https://www.cbsnews.com/6d39d9f1-07aa-451a-bc26-f4da80a4162e

“I think ‘smart’ robots will begin to compete with people on some physical tasks — in the construction and hospitality industries, for example — by the end of the decade,” he wrote.

    Humans only?

To prepare for such changes, Gates said it is urgent to discuss policies to mitigate AI’s impact on jobs. One idea would be to introduce a tax on AI tokens and robots, a move Gates argued would slow companies’ displacement of human workers.

“Right now, if you’re an employer and you hire someone, you pay payroll taxes on their earnings,” he wrote. “But if you buy a robot, you can usually write it off right away as a business expense. The tax system nudges you toward replacing people with machines.”

Gates also advocates reserving certain jobs, such as caregiving, for people, noting that humans are better able to handle certain responsibilities than robots. He equated that approach to creating a nature preserve in which societies choose to protect land rather than build on it.

“Some countries might insist on having humans take care of the elderly,” he wrote. “But a country like Japan, which has a shrinking workforce and not enough young people to care for the old, may welcome a caregiving robot.”

The rapid advances in AI mean policymakers, legislators and other decision makers must act now to develop a framework to address potential disruption from the technology.

“I believe we need time to prepare for the period of social, political and economic upheaval we are about to enter,” Gates said. “The people who need the most time are the ones who have the least — the accounting worker who’s replaced by a bot or the $20-an-hour worker who loses their job to a $10-an-hour robot.”

    image

FDA approves new pancreatic cancer drug that could extend patients’ lives

    August 26, 2026 / 7:02 PM EDT / CBS/AP

The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday approved a groundbreaking new drug for advanced pancreatic cancer, offering U.S. patients a more effective treatment against one of the deadliest types of cancer.

FDA officials gave expedited approval to the first-of-a-kind pill, called daraxonrasib, which blocks a mutated protein that fuels tumor growth in more than 90% of pancreatic cancer cases. It’s an approach that previously eluded drugmakers for decades.

The daily pills will be sold by Revolution Medicines under the brand name Rasonque. A one-month supply would cost approximately $39,800, the company announced.

Patients taking the drug nearly doubled their survival time, with fewer severe side effects, in a study that randomly assigned them to receive the experimental treatment or more chemotherapy. The company-funded study enrolled 500 patients whose metastatic, or spreading, cancer had quit responding to prior treatment.

This photo provided by Revolution Medicines on Aug. 26, 2026, shows packaging for the new pancreatic cancer drug, daraxonrasib, under the brand name Rasonque. Revolution Medicines via AP

“Most patients get the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer quite late, at which point its already metastatic, it’s already spread,” said Dr. Céline Gounder, CBS News medical correspondent. “… This is a pill that blocks a protein called RAS, and mutations in RAS drive around 90% of all pancreatic cancers. Scientists have been calling RAS ‘undruggable’ for the last 40 years, and now finally, we have a drug for it.”

Patients getting the new treatment lived for a median of 13.2 months compared with 6.7 months for chemotherapy recipients. Side effects included skin rash, mouth sores, diarrhea and other digestive issues.

“This is one of the most anticipated approvals I can think of,” said Dr. Andrew Coveler of the Fred Hutch Cancer Center. “This medicine is not a cure but a significant improvement.”

Pancreatic cancer is among the most deadly forms in large part because it is hard to detect before it starts spreading to other organs. The American Cancer Society estimates about 67,000 new cases will be diagnosed in the United States this year and more than 52,000 people will die from the disease. The five-year overall survival rate is 13%.

Former Sen. Ben Sasse of Nebraska, who was diagnosed with stage-four pancreatic cancer last December, told “60 Minutes” in April that he was part of the clinical trial for daraxonrasib. Sasse said the drug had been extremely effective for him, describing it as a “miracle drug.”

“I have much, much less pain than I had four months ago when I was diagnosed, and I have a massive 76% reduction in tumor volume over the last four months,” Sasse told “60 Minutes.”

Sasse said that when he was diagnosed in December, doctors had given him a “three- to four-month life expectancy.”

“I am on extended time already,” he said.

FDA regulators noted on Wednesday that they approved the drug more than six months ahead of their target date.

“It is our fundamental duty to deliver more cures and meaningful treatments to patients as quickly as possible,” the FDA’s acting commissioner, Kyle Diamantas, said in a statement.

Unlike with other cancers that have benefited from a variety of chemotherapy alternatives, pancreatic cancer has been harder to tackle.

The new drug targets mutations in the RAS gene family that normally regulates cell growth. What are known as KRAS mutations are especially critical in fueling pancreatic cancer. But a structure that made it hard for drugs to stick to the mutated proteins meant this cancer driver was long considered “undruggable.”

Doctors who treat pancreatic cancer hope the drug may usher in more new options for other forms of cancer, with scores of experimental drugs in development.

“I think this has opened doors for many other companies,” said Dr. Pashtoon Kasi of City of Hope Orange County, a California-based cancer center. “Downstream I think there are going to be a lot more trials looking at this approach in other tumor types.”

Revolution Medicines’ drug uses what’s essentially a molecular glue to bind with multiple KRAS subtypes. The Redwood City, California-based drugmaker is studying its technology for several other forms of cancer, including lung cancer.

    blob:https://www.cbsnews.com/ed1aa664-a765-4bf0-aff4-3ac96d508c8a

NFL ends Pro Bowl after 75 years, will still honor roster at season’s end

    August 26, 2026 / 7:16 PM EDT / CBS/AP

The Pro Bowl is no more, the NFL announced Wednesday, ending an exhibition of the league’s top players that was held in some form almost every year since 1951.

The game wasn’t played in 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but that was the only pause in the postseason event.

The league said 88 players will still be named as Pro Bowlers and honored in Los Angeles after this season. Several flag football events also will take place at that time.

In a news release, the NFL said it plans to “elevate” Pro Bowl selections, with no replacement selections, who in the past would substitute for injured players or for those playing in that year’s Super Bowl.

This year’s included Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders, Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Devin Lloyd and Dallas Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson.

“The roster will continue to be determined through an equal- weighted voting process among players, coaches and fans,” the NFL’s statement said.

“The Pro Bowl has always been about recognizing the players who distinguish themselves as the very best in the NFL,” league executive vice president Peter O’Reilly said in a statement. “A Pro Bowl selection will return to its original purpose, honoring the best of the best. We want that distinction to carry even greater meaning for the players, their families, their clubs and our fans.”

    blob:https://www.cbsnews.com/ed1aa664-a765-4bf0-aff4-3ac96d508c8a

The Athletic reported Wednesday that NFL executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent Sr. discussed the state of the Pro Bowl in a call with more than a dozen star players this summer.

Vincent said the players wanted a celebration of the league’s all-stars, according to The Athletic.

The Pro Bowl has also waned in popularity in recent years. Once a staple in Honolulu, the NFL has moved the event to various cities and even switched from tackle to flag football in 2023.

Aug 26 (Reuters) – A federal judge on Tuesday again blocked a Texas law restricting public drag performances, ruling for a second time that the legislation passed in the heavily Republican state violated the U.S. Constitution’s free speech ‌protections.

“For those who find such activities as described in this case offensive, the solution is relatively simple … just don’t go,” U.S. District Judge David Hittner wrote in his opinion — the second time the Texas-based judge has found the measure in violation of the Constitution’s First Amendment.

The law, Texas Senate Bill 12, had previously been tossed by Hittner in 2023 but was allowed to take effect in 2026 during an appeal.

In his Tuesday ruling, Hittner wrote that the law is “unconstitutionally vague,” adding that performers ranging from Dolly Parton and Elvis Presley to Miley Cyrus could have been subject to penalties under the law if their performances were seen as “erotic.”

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s office had defended the law, which, among other restrictions, banned “the exhibition of sexual gesticulations using ‌accessories or prosthetics that exaggerate male or female sexual characteristics” in public, or in venues where people under 18 may see it.

Paxton, a Republican who is currently running for the U.S. Senate, called the ruling “a profoundly flawed decision that endangers our children and is an affront to Texas values.”

Opponents of the law criticized it as too broad and said it was explicitly intended to target LGBT performers.

“Today’s decision confirms that the Legislature’s attempt to ban drag performances was unconstitutional from start to finish,” Brian Klosterboer, senior staff attorney at the ACLU of Texas, which represented the plaintiffs, said in a statement. “Drag has a rich history as a refuge of joy and liberation for countless Texans, and it’s not going anywhere.”
