    2026-09-10T10:03:42.012Z / reuters.com

A year after Charlie Kirk’s death, Turning Point USA grows but Trump slips with young voters

    2026-09-10T10:03:42.012Z / reuters.com

DALLAS, Sept 10 (Reuters) – One year after Charlie Kirk’s assassination, the organization he co-founded, Turning Point USA, has grown dramatically, expanding its presence at colleges and high schools and cementing itself as a force in Republican politics.

But some of the young voters Kirk helped bring into the party are not proving uniformly loyal to Republican President Donald Trump, testing the coalition that helped return him to the White House in 2024.

Kirk will be memorialized at the Republicans’ first-ever midterm convention on Thursday, exactly one year after he was killed, as the party confronts signs ‌of slippage among young men, a key constituency that powered Trump’s victory.

Kirk, 31, was fatally shot in the neck during a debate at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. Tyler Robinson has been charged with killing him, and a Utah judge ruled last week that prosecutors may seek the death penalty.

In the year since Kirk’s death, the movement he helped build has been buffeted by conspiracy theories about his assassination and by rising frustration among some young voters over the cost of living, the Iran war and records tied to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Josh Holstein, the 24-year-old chairman of the West Virginia Republican Party who first met Kirk while a high school student at a Turning Point training event, said any turmoil was temporary and pointed to the addition of dozens of Turning Point chapters across West Virginia since Kirk’s death.

“Obviously there’s going to be a reorganization if you have the unexpected death of somebody with that significant of a voice in the movement,” Holstein said, adding that he saw the memorial in Dallas as an opportunity to remind young voters “that what matters is the safety of our country, the future of our country and prosperity for young people.”

    COST OF LIVING A FACTOR

Young voters’ concerns are focused largely on the cost of living. A Harvard Youth Poll, conducted in late March and early April, found that half of Americans ages 18 to 29 said inflation affected them “a lot,” while 45% said they were struggling to make ends meet or have little financial security.

They are also more opposed than any other age group to the Iran war, with just 16% saying it was the right decision, according to a recent YouGov/Economist poll.

That opposition reflects a broader strain of anti-interventionism among younger Republicans. Conservative media figures with large followings among young men, including Tucker Carlson, have amplified criticism of the war by arguing that U.S. policy toward Iran was shaped too heavily by Israeli interests.

Months before his death, Kirk warned Vice President JD Vance that many young conservatives believed Israel had too much sway over U.S. foreign policy and that, in some cases, criticism of Israel was crossing into antisemitism, according to a book Vance published in June.

“The rifts that are happening among younger conservatives and the party more broadly – Israel is a huge part of that,” said Nicole Hemmer, a history professor at Vanderbilt University who studies conservative politics. “There’s quite a lot of anger on that front with Trump, and there’s a lot of anger about the economy.”

    DOWNWARD SWING IN POLLS

As a result, some young men have soured on Trump. Last month, some 32% of men aged 18 to ‌29 approved of the president’s performance in the White House, down from 43% in February 2025, according to Reuters/Ipsos polling. Trump garnered the support of 46% of young males in the 2024 election, up seven points from 2020, according to exit polling analyzed by Pew Research.

Andrew Kolvet, a spokesperson for Turning Point, said Kirk had watched frustration among young voters build last year over the administration’s handling of the Epstein files and the strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, with persistent cost-of-living pressures deepening the discontent.

“Charlie saw these fault lines emerging and was messaging to it,” said Kolvet, a close friend of Kirk’s.

Despite those challenges, Turning Point’s growth has accelerated over the past year. The group now has more than 3,500 high school chapters nationwide, up 180%, and more than 1,500 college chapters, up more than 60%, Kolvet said.

“It’s happened amidst a broader political environment where there are obvious headwinds,” he said. “I think it’s a testament to his legacy and the team here.”

    TURNING POINT ENDURES

Kyle Spencer, who chronicled Kirk’s rise in her book “Raising Them Right,” said the infrastructure he built at Turning Point, including a youth voter turnout operation, remains formidable and should not be underestimated. But she said the Trump administration’s campaign against what it calls woke culture, including diversity, equity and inclusion programs, has deprived young conservatives of a central adversary, dulling a key rallying point for them. Kirk, she added, would likely have been better equipped than his successors to navigate the shift.

“The really like positive, kind of all-encompassing buzz around TPUSA that was in existence for such a long time is kind of now competing with this new kid on the block,” she said, referring to a growing interest among some young voters in socialist and left-wing ideas. “The excitement right now is gravitating more towards progressive voices.”

Young voters could prove decisive in midterm elections in November.

A survey of 5,549 young adults conducted earlier this year by Tufts University’s Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning and Engagement found that 56% of respondents ages 18 to 29 were “extremely likely” to vote in the midterms, two points higher than in a comparable poll ahead of the 2024 presidential election, when turnout is typically higher.

That raises the stakes for Republicans as young voters grapple with persistent cost-of-living pressures.

Jack Posobiec, a conservative commentator who worked alongside Kirk at Turning Point, said this was the kind of moment made for Kirk, who excelled at meeting young people on their own terms.

“He would say: ‘What is driving your interest in socialism? … You can’t just browbeat young people. You have to listen to what they’re actually feeling, understand it,’” Posobiec told Reuters at the convention. “I think there is a disconnect in the Republican messaging when it comes to that.”

Fire on cargo ship docked in Chinese port kills 20 and some people are missing, state media say

    September 10, 2026 / 7:33 AM EDT / CBS/AP

Beijing — At least 20 people were killed and five were missing after a cargo ship caught fire while docked in a Chinese port, Chinese state media reported Thursday.

The ship was docked for repairs by the Beihai Shipbuilding Co. at the port of Qingdao, a major shipping hub on the northeastern Chinese coast.

A photo released by Xinhua news agency identified the ship as the Ocean Melody, which sails under a Liberian flag, according to the tracking website VesselFinder.

A total of 42 people had been on the vessel, and 12 of them were safely evacuated, Xinhua reported. Five were injured and taken to a hospital and remained in stable condition.

The fire started around 11 a.m. Thursday and was extinguished by 2:30 p.m. local time.

China’s President Xi Jinping issued “important instructions” to urgently conduct rescues of missing people from the ship, Xinhua said, adding that Premier Li Qiang called for “trapped” people to be rescued.

There was no word on what caused the blaze.

Xi also “stressed the need to … strictly hold those responsible to account,” Xinhua reported, according to French news agency AFP.

A witness from a neighboring residential compound told AFP he saw thick smoke coming from the ship but didn’t hear an explosion or see flames.

America’s reddest state chases billion-dollar boom as others sour on massive emerging industry

Supporters say billions in data center property tax could deliver significant relief for these Western state homeowners

Overlooked red state could become AI data center hot spot as others put up roadblocks

Tax Foundation Senior Fellow Jared Walczak says Wyoming’s abundant land, affordable energy and high-capacity fiber could give the state an edge as others consider new taxes on booming data centers.

As Americans weigh the costs and benefits of massive data centers emerging in their towns to fuel the artificial intelligence (AI) boom, the country’s reddest state could be poised to capitalize on billions of dollars in investment that other states are increasingly reluctant to welcome.

With wide-open spaces, abundant energy and a business-friendly environment, Wyoming has many of the ingredients tech companies are looking for as they race to expand their AI infrastructure in the U.S.

The opportunity comes as the rapid buildout of data centers has sparked political fights across the country over their enormous electricity demands, water use and tax treatment.

As some states and communities consider new taxes, restrictions or even moratoriums on data center construction, Wyoming has a chance to position itself as an alternative. Supporters argue the projects could bring billions of dollars onto local tax rolls and potentially ease the burden on homeowners.

And Wyoming already checks many of the boxes data center developers are looking for.

“Data centers need a few things. They need land, they need affordable energy, they need to avoid natural disasters, and, of course, they need regulatory approval,” Jared Walczak, vice president of state projects at the Tax Foundation, told Fox News Digital.

The Cowboy State also already has high-capacity fiber running along major interstate corridors, Walczak said, giving developers another key piece of infrastructure.

“If more states start imposing discriminatory taxes just on data centers, then places like Wyoming, at least as long as they don’t do likewise, can become even more attractive,” he said.

Wyoming is wrestling with some of the same questions confronting communities elsewhere.

Cheyenne officials rejected a proposed one-year moratorium on new data centers in May following public debate over electricity rates, water use and other concerns. Wyoming lawmakers have also considered reclassifying data centers as industrial property, a move that would subject them to a higher property tax assessment rate.

ELECTION WHISTLEBLOWER WARNS FOREIGN ACTORS ARE SPENDING BILLIONS TO TURN AMERICANS AGAINST AI

But Walczak argues that attracting the facilities could deliver a significant payoff for Wyoming homeowners.

“You have potentially billions of dollars worth of taxable property coming into a couple hundred acres,” he said. “And that’s the sort of increase in the tax base that can allow significant property tax relief for every other payer in the jurisdiction.”

“Wyoming’s been having a lot of conversations about lowering property taxes,” Walczak added. “This is a great way to do that.”

He pointed to Loudoun County, Virginia, the country’s largest data center market, as an example of how that tax base can benefit residents.

“Data centers provide about 45% of all local tax revenue to Loudoun County,” Walczak said, adding that the average homeowner would pay an estimated $5,800 more annually in property taxes without the industry.

The economic upside comes with a broader debate over who pays for the infrastructure needed to serve the power-hungry facilities.

Walczak said data centers can avoid pushing those costs onto residents if operators pay for the additional generation and transmission capacity they require.

For Wyoming, that leaves policymakers facing the same question confronting states nationwide as they look to capture a piece of the AI investment boom without leaving residents to shoulder the costs.

are fighting back. It is a strategy that legal experts and industry sources say may carry fewer risks than giving in.

Trump and his businesses are suing the banks, alleging they closed his accounts in 2021 for political reasons. They deny the claims. Capital One told a federal court in July that it closed Trump’s accounts ‌following an internal anti-money-laundering review, sparking renewed scrutiny including from a senior Democratic senator who last week pressed the bank for more details.

Capital One has not accused Trump or his businesses of money-laundering. Spokespeople for both banks declined to comment. The Trump Organization last week called the anti-money-laundering review a pretext to conceal a politically motivated decision.

While several legal experts said the banks have strong defenses, fighting Trump poses risks for the banks by potentially deepening animus with the president and airing confidential internal deliberations in public.

But settling could be more hazardous. It could encourage lawsuits from many other customers claiming they were similarly “debanked,” half a dozen legal experts and banking industry sources said. A federal bank regulator is probing about 100,000 such complaints against multiple banks and is expected to soon release its findings.

“The larger risk of settling is we don’t know what the Trump family might demand,” said Todd Zywicki, a George Mason University law professor who has worked with Trump’s transition and agency review teams on federal financial oversight.

“It could invite additional lawsuits by people who faced adverse actions over their bank accounts and, depending on the terms of individual settlements, provide information to anyone who claims they were debanked,” Zywicki added.

Debanking occurs when a bank cuts off an account holder’s access to services, often because of concern about legal, financial or reputational risks.

A spokesperson for Trump’s legal team said Capital One, JPMorgan and other major institutions debanked the president, his family and businesses for “blatantly” political reasons.

“President Trump’s powerful lawsuits are holding these bad actors accountable for their disgraceful conduct,” the spokesperson said.

LEGAL EXPERTS SAY BANKS HAVE STRONG CASES

Republicans have for years accused Wall Street banks of discriminatory left-leaning “woke” policies to cut off services to religious or conservative groups and conservative-aligned industries such as fossil-fuel companies and gunmakers.

Trump has ratcheted up that pressure.

In a civil lawsuit filed in March 2025, his son Eric Trump and the Trump Organization alleged Capital One closed more than 300 accounts following the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol because of the bank’s political bias and “woke” beliefs. They are seeking unspecified damages and a court declaration that the closures were politically motivated.

Then in January 2026, Trump sued JPMorgan and CEO Jamie Dimon, accusing them of closing his accounts to promote a “woke” agenda. Trump is seeking at least $5 billion in damages and a declaration that the bank acted unlawfully.

The law is generally on banks’ side because customer agreements typically confer broad discretion to close accounts, said several ‌legal experts and a top industry source familiar with the issues, although lenders frequently say federal regulations are the primary reason for doing so.

Capital One and JPMorgan have cited that discretion in their defenses. Capital One said its account closures resulted from a careful review by its AML team “in accordance with bank policies and regulatory guidance.” A judge has tossed two versions of the complaint in that case, but allowed amendments.

JPMorgan has called Trump’s $5 billion lawsuit meritless, and said it does not close accounts on political grounds.

“For banks, the strength of the case is always a key factor in deciding whether to settle or litigate — even when the other party is the president,” said Ed Mills, a Raymond James banking analyst.

TARGETS FARE WELL WHEN THEY FIGHT BACK

The Trump administration has targeted other perceived adversaries, including media organizations, law firms and universities, for what it has said are valid course corrections, necessary probes of wrongdoing and legitimate policy initiatives.

Some of those cases have shown that targets who push back in court can fare well, said one source who is not working on the banks’ cases but familiar with the issues.

Several law firms, for example, won rulings blocking administration measures. Some firms that reached deals, meanwhile, have been accused by other lawyers and media commentators of attempting to curry favor with the administration.

While banks frequently settle civil litigation, doing so where the allegations concern systemic practices can expose them to broader financial harm, legal experts said. Settlements relating to the 2007 to 2009 mortgage crisis and later rate-rigging scandals, for example, generated years of follow-on litigation.

Cryptocurrency companies, gun groups and others have also complained about being debanked.

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency is probing around 100,000 debanking complaints as well as banks’ internal lending policies, including those of Capital One and JPMorgan. The Justice Department is also probing debanking allegations, Reuters and others reported in June.

If Capital One and JPMorgan ever appeared to concede that they closed accounts without sufficient grounds, they could open themselves to additional lawsuits, regulatory scrutiny and compensation claims, two of the banking sources said.

The banks can also afford the best defense from top litigators. JPMorgan has hired Jones Day, a major firm with ties to Republican administrations, including Trump’s, while Capital One is using Debevoise & Plimpton.

The firms did not respond to requests for comment.

“Both these banks are led by formidable CEOs … who have a proven track record,” said Todd Baker, senior fellow at the Richman Center for Business, Law and Public Policy at Columbia University. “They are not afraid to take risks.”

Multiple U.S. military aircraft damaged in Iranian strikes on military base in Jordan, sources say

    September 10, 2026 6:55 AM EDT / CBS News

Multiple American military aircraft were damaged in Iranian strikes overnight Tuesday into Wednesday local time on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, people with direct knowledge of the matter told CBS News.

One A-10 Thunderbolt, an attack aircraft known as the Warthog, was struck and lost a wing, the sources said.

Roughly eight F-15s sustained light damage and were reportedly put back into service, according to the people familiar with the damage, who spoke to CBS News under the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

No U.S. deaths have been reported in the strikes on Jordan.

The overnight damage came after the U.S. said Tuesday it attacked five Iranian tankers in retaliation for Iran targeting a U.S. Navy warship. In response, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed it launched attacks at eight tankers and two warships, including the base in Jordan.

U.S. forces in Jordan launched more than 30 Patriot missiles defending against the Iranian strikes in Jordan.

CBS News previously reported that U.S. officials are concerned over the rapidly declining stockpile of Patriot missiles among other types of precision munitions.

President Trump said Wednesday that Iran is desperate to affect the midterm elections and mused that the war would end right afterward.

    blob:https://www.cbsnews.com/a82cc5e1-5eaf-4499-b080-462186f362e6

“I think the war will end immediately after the election, because they can’t hold out any longer,” the president told reporters before heading to Texas. “They’re desperate to try and affect the election so we can get a nice, weak group of people in there and leave them alone and let them have their nuclear weapon.”

“All they want is a nuclear weapon and if they had a nuclear weapon the whole world is in deep trouble,” he said.

Despite the claims, Mr. Trump said he’s not looking to negotiate with Iran in the near future, before the midterms.

“We’re not looking for it, to be honest,” Mr. Trump said. “Originally I wanted to make a deal. We’re so far down the line, they have very little country left right now, so we’re not looking for it. Yes, a negotiation could possibly happen but it’s not something we’re looking at.”

Children of 9/11 to finally get a major health study

    2026-09-10T10:03:00.56Z / Reuters

Sept 10 (Reuters) – When hijacked planes brought down the World Trade Center’s twin towers on September 11, 2001, roughly 25,000 children were living or attending school nearby in lower Manhattan, and thousands more were in surrounding neighborhoods. Some were infants and toddlers, while others were still in the womb.

Even though they were exposed to the massive toxic cloud and settling dust containing pulverized concrete, glass fibers, asbestos, and other pollutants in the days and weeks after the towers fell, very few of these children were enrolled in the government-funded follow-up health studies of WTC survivors. Those were mainly for first responders and other adults.

Keep up with the latest medical breakthroughs and healthcare trends with the award-winning Reuters Health Rounds newsletter. Sign up here.

As a result, there was no means of tracking chronic illnesses, including cancers, cardiovascular diseases and reproductive health outcomes, that may only now be emerging as those children reach their 30s and early 40s, scientists say.

Major questions remain about whether exposure to the toxins and the trauma on 9/11 and afterward increased their long-term health risks, according to scientists.

To address these gaps, Congress announced in 2022 that it would fund a study of these individuals to be conducted with U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention oversight.

Last month, the CDC said it will be seeking applications from researchers to set up the World Trade Center Youth Research Coordinating Center and identify and track a Youth Research Cohort.

It was not immediately known how many participants the agency hopes to recruit, when exactly it will formally request proposals, and how much funding is available.

The agency has specified that study participants will have been 21 years old or younger, or in utero, and living below 14th Street in Manhattan or anywhere in Brooklyn on and after 9/11.

A cohort of similarly aged but unexposed individuals will be recruited for comparison.

The CDC’s World Trade Center Health Program and the New York City Department of Health’s World Trade Center Health Registry both offered services for children in the early years after the attacks. But most affected youngsters sought care from their own pediatricians, whereas many adult survivors were uninsured and needed the programs’ services, recalled lung specialist Dr. Joan Reibman of NYU Langone Medical Center.

In adult survivors and first responders, dozens of types of cancers and other health issues related to their exposure have been identified. But data on the effects of childhood exposure has so far come only from small studies.

Reibman, the founder of the World Trade Center Environmental Health Center, said gathering participants will require a great deal of community support.

“These people are spread across the United States right now. They’re all older. They may not necessarily want to go back to that period of time,” she said. “There’s going to have to be a lot of work with community groups to try to recruit them.”

Reibman and Dr. Leigh Wilson, the current medical director of the World Trade Center Environmental Health Center, both acknowledged that children in war zones today may face some of the same long-term consequences as the children of 9/11.

“I would love to prevent every and any adverse effect in these children,” Wilson said.

Studying the children of 9/11 may shed light on preventive and mitigating measures and resources that could be put in place, Wilson added.

“You have to identify and start studying all exposed populations immediately, whether they’re adults or children,” Reibman said, and “unfortunately we haven’t learned it from the World Trade Center disaster.”
