Could tapping the Strategic Petroleum Reserve lower gas prices? Here’s what experts say.

    Updated on: March 10, 2026 / 2:28 PM EDT / CBS News

Gas prices are surging across the U.S., with motorists paying about 20% more per gallon than before the start of the U.S. war with Iran. Experts say one option that could help tame prices at the pump is tapping the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, the nation’s emergency oil stockpile designed to cushion supply shocks.

The average price per gallon stood at $3.54 on Tuesday, up from about $2.92 a month ago, according to AAA. The price hike reflects disruptions to oil tankers traveling through the Strait of Hormuz, the critical waterway through which roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passes each day.

President Trump has sought to convince shippers that the Strait of Hormuz will remain safe. Last week, he pledged that a little-known U.S. government agency, the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation, insure ships sailing through the Persian Gulf.

On Monday, the president told CBS News that the war with Iran is

War secretary’s comments come as reports suggest Moscow may be providing intelligence to Iran

War Secretary Pete Hegseth said Tuesday that Russia “should not be involved” in the escalating conflict between the United States, Israel and Iran, even as analysts point to Russian military activity that aligns with reports Moscow may be aiding Tehran.

“The president maintains strong relationships with world leaders, which creates opportunities and options for us in very dynamic ways,” Hegseth said when asked about President Donald Trump’s recent call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

But as it relates to the Middle East conflict, he added, Russia “should not be involved.”

The administration’s messaging comes amid reports that Russia has provided information that could help Iran identify U.S. military assets in the Middle East. Moscow has not publicly confirmed the claims.

Intelligence assessments have reportedly said Russia provided Iran with information that could help identify the locations of American warships, aircraft and other military assets. Officials reportedly stressed there is no public evidence that Moscow is directing Iranian strikes, but said the information could assist Tehran’s targeting efforts.

The scope, timing and operational impact of that information have not been publicly detailed.

While there is no public evidence definitively proving Russia is providing real-time targeting data, George Barros, a Russia expert at the Institute for the Study of War, said open-source indicators are consistent with the type of support described in the reports.

Barros pointed to Russian military reconnaissance satellites, including Cosmos-2550, a radar and electronic signature spacecraft that recently passed over the Persian Gulf and Arabian Sea — areas where U.S. forces have been operating.

“They’re specialized for naval reconnaissance and detecting ships, because the radar signature off the water really pings it quite well,” Barros said. “These are known capabilities of the Russians.”

Such radar systems can detect maritime targets and electronic emissions that reveal force positioning. Barros said those capabilities align with known gaps in Iran’s own space-based intelligence collection.

Although he cautioned that he does not have dispositive proof of real-time targeting support, Barros said the convergence of Russian reconnaissance capabilities, satellite positioning and reported cooperation “makes total sense.”

Trump on Monday described his recent conversation with Putin as “very good” and “constructive,” saying the Russian leader “wants to be very constructive.” Trump suggested Moscow could be more helpful by helping bring the war in Ukraine to an end.

Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, acknowledged over the weekend that Russia is assisting Iran “in many different directions” in its war with the United States and Israel. Pressed on whether that includes intelligence sharing, Araghchi said, “They are helping us in many different directions,” but added, “I don’t have any detailed information.”

Beyond intelligence collection, analysts say battlefield patterns suggest tactical cross-pollination between Russia and Iran.

During the war in Ukraine, Iran supplied Russia with Shahed one-way attack drones, which Moscow deployed extensively against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. Over time, Russian forces refined strike packages combining drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles to overwhelm integrated Western air defense systems.

“The Russians got really, really good at learning how to launch drones against integrated Western air defense systems,” Barros said.

Those lessons, he said, appear to have informed Iranian strike tactics in the Middle East, where Tehran has launched large-scale combined missile and drone attacks against U.S. and allied targets.

If confirmed, Barros argued, intelligence sharing that materially supports Iranian targeting would amount to Moscow acting as a “co-belligerent.”

“The Russians are coming out with Iran as a co-belligerent,” he said, adding that the Kremlin has long viewed the United States as a geopolitical adversary.

At the same time, Russia remains constrained in how far it can go.

Russian ground forces are tied down in Ukraine and are not in a position to deploy to assist Iran. Analysts say any Russian support is far more likely to come in the form of intelligence sharing, technology transfers or drone production rather than boots on the ground.

One potential avenue involves drone manufacturing.

Russia operates large-scale Shahed-derived drone production facilities that were initially enabled by Iranian technology transfers. If Iran’s domestic drone factories are degraded by strikes, Russian production could theoretically help sustain Tehran’s aerial campaign, though there is no confirmed evidence that such transfers are occurring.

Defense officials have publicly downplayed the operational impact of any reported Russian assistance, saying U.S. commanders are tracking foreign intelligence activity and factoring it into planning.

The contrast between Trump’s characterization of Putin as “constructive” and Hegseth’s warning that Russia should stay out of the conflict underscores the delicate balance the administration is attempting to strike — pursuing diplomacy in Ukraine while confronting the possibility of deeper cooperation between Moscow and Tehran in the Middle East.

For now, analysts say the evidence stops short of conclusive proof. But the alignment of Russian reconnaissance capabilities, battlefield tactics refined in Ukraine and Tehran’s own acknowledgment of assistance has intensified scrutiny of Moscow’s role as the regional war unfolds.

Russia has not publicly responded to the allegation of intelligence sharing with Iran, but has broadly called for de-escalation of the conflict.

The Russian embassy could not immediately be reached for comment.

FDA warns Novo Nordisk over unreported potential Ozempic side effects

    Updated on: March 10, 2026 / 1:50 PM EDT / CBS News

Novo Nordisk, the pharmaceutical company behind Ozempic, has received a warning letter from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration over issues with its procedures for reporting potential side effects of the flagship diabetes drug, which is also prescribed for weight loss.

In the letter, dated March 5, the FDA cited three deaths among patients receiving semaglutide, the generic name for the medication in Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic and Wegovy, which were allegedly not reported properly to the agency. Those deaths included one suicide, according to the FDA. Another instance involved a patient that reported suicidal ideations while taking semaglutide.

The FDA did not speculate as to whether the deaths or other side effects were necessarily linked to the medication. Its letter focused on the fact that Novo Nordisk apparently violated its protocols for reporting adverse symptoms that could potentially be tied to the drug.

FDA investigators discovered problems with Novo Nordisk’s reporting compliance when it conducted an inspection at the Danish drugmaker’s U.S. headquarters in Plainsboro, New Jersey, in early 2025. It was conducted as part of the agency’s Bioresearch Monitoring Program, which aims to ensure that accurate and timely information about product safety is submitted to the FDA for monitoring.

Novo Nordisk responded to the FDA’s warning letter on Tuesday, saying in a statement that it had been “working diligently” to address the agency’s concerns since its inspection took place last year. The company said the letter largely sought more details about the steps the company has taken since the inspection to comply with post-marketing adverse drug experience, or PADE, regulations. But the letter did not “make any conclusions about the quality or safety of our medicines,” the company said.

“Novo Nordisk takes PADE reporting requirements seriously and we plan to address the requests in the Warning Letter expeditiously and holistically,” said Anna Windle, the head of clinical development, medical and regulatory affairs at Novo Nordisk U.S. “We are confident that we will resolve the matters outlined in Warning Letter to the FDA’s full satisfaction.”

Another recent evaluation by the FDA determined that there was no connection between suicide and GLP-1 drugs such as Ozempic or Wegovy. The agency in January requested the removal of boxed warnings for suicidal behavior or ideation from those medications.

Most but not all of the latest national polls indicate majority opposition to the US military strikes Trump launched against Iran

    Published March 10, 2026 12:23pm EDT

A week and a half into the U.S. and Israeli strikes against Iran, the latest national public opinion poll indicates that more than half of American voters oppose U.S. military action.

But the survey from Quinnipiac University in Connecticut is the latest to indicate a wide partisan divide when it comes to support for the U.S. military operation, known as Epic Fury, which has resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and the decimation of the country’s military.

Fifty-three percent of voters questioned in the poll, which was conducted Friday through Sunday, said they oppose the U.S. military action against Iran, which was ordered by President Donald Trump, with 40% supporting the operation.

The Quinnipiac poll joins other recent surveys from NPR/PBS/Marist (44%–55%), CBS News (44%–56%), NBC News (41%–54%), Washington Post (39%–52%), CNN (41%–59%), and Reuters/Ipsos (27%–43%), in indicating minority support for U.S. military action.

But the latest Fox News poll, conducted Feb. 28–March 2, showed Americans split at 50% in their support or opposition to the fighting.

And three other national polls conducted over the past week and a half indicated majority or plurality support for the operation.

The surveys highlight the divergence between Democrats and Republicans over the fighting.

TRUMP’S TWO WORD ANSWER AFTER IRAN PICKS NEW SUPREME LEADER

More than 8 in 10 Republicans surveyed by Fox News said they approved of the U.S. use of force against Iran, with 6 in 10 saying the president’s actions on Iran are making the U.S. safer.

But nearly 8 in 10 Democrats and 6 in 10 independents disapproved of the U.S. strikes and said things are less safe because of Trump’s performance.

The vast majority of Democrats surveyed by Quinnipiac University, as well as 6-in-10 independents, said they opposed the strikes on Iran, with 85% of Republicans supporting the military action.

A majority (55%) questioned by Quinnipiac said they didn’t think Iran posed an imminent military threat to the U.S. before the attacks, with nearly four in ten disagreeing.

Again, there was a partisan divide, with 83% of Democrats and 63% of independents saying Iran didn’t pose an imminent threat, while nearly three quarters of Republicans said Tehran did pose an imminent threat.

But there was no partisan gap when it came to the possibility of sending U.S. ground troops into Iran.

HEAD HERE TO CHECK OUT THE LATEST FOX NEWS POLLS

Nearly three quarters of voters opposed sending U.S. ground troops into Iran, including 95% of Democrats, 75% of independents and 52% of Republicans.

Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth have repeatedly not ruled out using ground troops in Iran.

Asked how long the fighting between the U.S. and Iran, which has retaliated with strikes against Israel and other nations in the volatile Middle East, will last, just 3% of Quinnipiac pollees said days, 18% offered weeks, 32% guessed months, 13% thought the attacks could last a year, and just over a quarter said more than a year.

“Very soon,” Trump said at a news conference Monday, when asked when the strikes would end. “Look, everything they have is gone, including their leadership.”

And the president described the operation as an “excursion.”

Quinnipiac University Polling Analyst Peter Malloy noted that “perhaps compelled by memories of long wars, Americans see no early end to the enormous upheaval in the Middle East.”

Trump recently dismissed the polling on Iran, telling the New York Post March 2: “I don’t care about polling. I have to do the right thing. I have to do the right thing. This should have been done a long time ago.”

Oil prices are falling — gas prices aren’t. Here’s why.

    Updated on: March 10, 2026 / 2:51 PM EDT / CBS News

U.S. motorists are likely to face higher gas prices for several weeks even if crude oil remains stable, according to GasBuddy petroleum analyst Patrick De Haan.

Global crude prices swung wildly on Monday, soaring to nearly $120 a barrel earlier in the day before dropping after President Trump told CBS News that the U.S. war with Iran could end soon.

Although Brent crude declined by about 13% on Tuesday, dipping to $85 a barrel, the national average gas price rose to $3.54 per gallon, or 6 cents higher than the previous day, according to AAA.

Gas prices have surged by more than 50 cents per gallon since the war started. The average price was $2.98 per gallon on Feb. 27, the day before the U.S. and Israel launched strikes on Iran, according to GasBuddy data shared with CBS News.

    Where gas prices are going

Motorists should expect to pay higher gas prices for the foreseeable future, De Haan told CBS News. Even if crude oil prices continue to fall, gas prices are unlikely to return to their levels before the Iran war began, partly due to seasonal issues that drive up fuel costs, he added.

“Where we are at this moment would likely mean the national average is going to stall out here very shortly, in the next 24 to 36 hours, between $3.55 to $3.65” a gallon, De Haan said.

Fuel demand tends to increase as the weather warms up and more cars hit the road, while gas stations also switch to more expensive summer-blend gasoline, which takes longer to produce and includes additives intended to reduce evaporation during warmer months.

1/1 Skip Ad Continue watching after the ad

Gas stations are required to sell the summer blend from June 1 to September 15 every year, according to American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers, a trade association. As a result, consumers normally end up paying about 15 cents more per gallon during the summer, according to CBS News Minnesota.

    Roller coaster prices

Despite the sharp drop in oil prices on Tuesday, crude remains about 20% higher than just before to the U.S. war with Iran.

Brent crude, the international benchmark, has jumped to about $85 a barrel from roughly $70 at the end of February. West Texas Intermediate, the U.S. benchmark, has surged about 25%, rising to about $80 from $67 over the same time period.

“Oil prices have been exceptionally volatile. Today they are dropping, yesterday they were spiking up,” said Wayne Winegarden, senior fellow in business and economics at the Pacific Research Institute, a nonprofit think tank. “It is difficult for producers to accurately price gasoline in such an environment.”

“Until greater clarity emerges, we will likely continue to experience this pricing roller coaster,” he added.

Petroleum prices are likely to remain elevated as long as security risks remain in the Strait of Hormuz, De Haan added. About 20% of the world’s oil supply travels through the narrow waterway.

Tankers remain wary of sailing through the channel after Iran last week threatened to set vessels ablaze. According to a tracker from Bloomberg, the strait remained effectively closed as of Tuesday, aside from some Iran-linked traffic.

“The market is badly looking for clarity on what the next move might be, whether that’s a reopening of the Strait of Hormuz,” De Haan told CBS News. “Once ships start sailing, that’s when the relief will hit.”

    End of the beginning?

President Trump assuaged some concerns in the markets after signaling that the war could soon come to a close and offering to ramp up protection in the strait.

“Markets are beginning to trade the end of the conflict before it has actually happened,” Nigel Green, CEO of deVere Group, an investment advisory firm, said in an email. “Oil dropping back below $90 and equities pushing higher tells us investors are already pricing a scenario in which tensions cool and supply disruptions remain limited.”

Mr. Trump on Tuesday told CBS News senior White House correspondent Weijia Jiang on Monday that the U.S. could do a lot about the strait and threatened Iran if it tries to disrupt shipping in the waterway. Later on Monday, he signaled that the U.S. military could get involved in keeping the strait open and predicted the war could end “very soon.”

However, Iran’s foreign minister said Tuesday his country was prepared to continue attacks for as long as necessary, while also ruling out talks with the U.S.

FIRST ON FOX:Taxpayers are seeing an average refund above $3,700 halfway through the filing season, and the Trump administration is pointing to its new tax breaks as a driver of higher take-home pay.

Treasury figures reviewed by Fox News Digital show the IRS has processed nearly 63.5 million returns so far, or about 45% of the total expected by April 15.

In the same update, more than 27.5 million filers claimed at least one of President Donald Trump’s new tax cuts using Schedule 1-A, a new IRS form for deductions tied to tips, overtime, certain car loan interest and an enhanced senior deduction.

Among the most widely claimed new tax breaks so far, Treasury said more than 15.5 million returns took the “No Tax on Overtime” break, while more than 3.5 million claimed “No Tax on Tips,” provisions the administration says allow eligible workers to exclude those earnings from taxable income.

Treasury also reported more than 9.2 million returns claiming the Enhanced Deduction for Seniors, and more than 690,000 claimed “No Tax on Car Loan Interest.”

Signed into law on July 4, 2025, Trump’s landmark One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) is a sweeping tax and spending package that builds on the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), enacted during his first term, while introducing new federal initiatives.

The law extends tax cuts originally enacted under the TCJA that were scheduled to expire at the end of last year, preventing a broad tax increase for individuals. Several provisions are made permanent, including lower individual income tax rates and an expanded standard deduction.

It also extends other provisions temporarily, reshaping the tax landscape for households and businesses while adding new programs aimed at long-term savings.

One of the new initiatives tucked in the OBBBA is “Trump Accounts,” a government-created investment program for children.

Treasure hunter who refused to disclose location of shipwreck’s 500 gold coins is released from prison after a decade

    March 10, 2026 / 2:35 PM EDT / CBS/AP

A former deep-sea treasure hunter who made one of the greatest shipwreck discoveries in American history and spent the past decade in prison after refusing to disclose the whereabouts of some of its missing gold coins is now free, federal records show.

Tommy Thompson, who in 1988 located what was known as the “Ship of Gold” off the coast of South Carolina, was released last Wednesday, according to Federal Bureau of Prisons records reviewed by The Associated Press.

Thompson, an Ohio-born research scientist, was hailed as a hero after finding the S.S. Central America and its thousands of pounds of sunken treasure that sat at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean for more than 150 years.

The ship sank in September 1857, along with 425 passengers and crewmembers and 30,000 pounds of federal gold from the new San Francisco Mint to create a reserve for banks in the eastern U.S. The ship was located by Thompson and his team more than 7,000 feet below the surface.

But in the decades that followed, he battled with investors who accused him of cheating them out of millions and then spent years on the run as a fugitive before being sent to prison over rebuffing court orders while contending he didn’t know what happened to 500 coins minted from the ship’s gold.

In this November 1989 file photo, Tommy Thompson holds a $50 pioneer gold piece retrieved earlier in 1989 from the wreck of the gold ship SS Central America. AP Photo/The Columbus Dispatch, Lon Horwedel

The Central America was filled with a big haul from the California Gold Rush when it sank in a hurricane in 1857. Four hundred and twenty-five people drowned, and thousands of pounds of gold were lost, contributing to an economic panic.

Investors who backed Thompson’s venture sued him in 2005, saying they had yet to receive any money from the $50 million sale of more than 500 gold bars and thousands of coins — just part of the ship’s booty.

Thompson, who was living in Florida, went into seclusion and then later became a fugitive when an Ohio federal judge issued a warrant for his arrest in 2012 after he failed to show up in court.

Three years later, authorities tracked Thompson to a Florida hotel where he was living under a fake name. The judge then held him in contempt and sent Thompson to prison at the end of 2015 for refusing to answer questions about the location of missing coins.

Thompson, now 73, maintained that the coins — valued then at $2.5 million — were turned over to a trust in Belize and said the $50 million from the sale of the first batch of gold mostly went toward legal fees and bank loans.

He remained locked up even though federal law generally limits jail time for contempt of court to 18 months. A federal appeals court in 2019 rejected Thompson’s argument that the law applied to him, saying his refusal violated conditions of a plea agreement.

The following year, Thompson appeared by video for another hearing where U.S. District Judge Algenon Marbley again asked whether he was ready to address the whereabouts of the gold.

“Your honor, I don’t know if we’ve gone over this road before or not, but I don’t know the whereabouts of the gold,” Thompson responded. “I feel like I don’t have the keys to my freedom.”

Just over a year ago, Marbley agreed to end Thompson’s sentence on the civil contempt charge, saying he was no longer convinced that keeping him in prison would produce an answer. The judge then ordered Thompson to immediately start serving a two-year sentence for skipping the 2012 court hearing.

“People kill people and get out in half the time”

Dwight Manley, a California coin dealer who bought and sold nearly the entire fortune, said Monday that Thompson paid a heavy price over what he described as a business dispute.

“Going to prison for 10 years over a business dispute is not America,” Manley said. “People kill people and get out in half the time.”

Sentences in civil contempt cases are somewhat indefinite, but they shouldn’t go on forever, said Ryan Scott, a University of Florida law professor who researches contempt law and worked to secure Thompson’s release.

“It’s very unusual to go on 10 years,” Scott said.

Tommy Thompson, a former deep-sea treasure hunter, is seen in an undated photo provided by the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office. Delaware County Sheriff’s Office via AP

He said Thompson should have been freed years ago – since at least 2018, after the court dismissed the underlying case – calling it a “miscarriage of justice for this to have gone on this long.”

Treasure from the S.S. Central America has fetched millions of dollars over the years.

In 2022, one of the largest S.S. Central America ingots ever offered at auction, an 866.19-ounce find known as a Justh & Hunter ingot, sold for $2.16 million through Dallas-based Heritage Auctions.

In 2019, multiple relics from the shipwreck hauled in more than $11 million at auction. In 2001, an 80-pound ingot was bought by a private collector for a record $8 million.

Trump’s pick to lead the Federal Reserve meets GOP senator holding up his confirmation

Kevin Warsh’s potential ascent to lead the world’s most powerful central bank comes at turbulent moment for Fed

    By Amanda Macias, Alex Miller

President Donald Trump’s Federal Reserve chair nominee, Kevin Warsh, will meet Tuesday with Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., the Republican who has been holding up his nomination amid GOP concerns tied to a criminal probe involving Fed Chair Jerome Powell.

Tillis told Fox News Digital he supports Warsh, whom Trump tapped in January, but said he wants the Powell investigation resolved before he can vote to move the nomination forward.

On Jan. 11, Powell confirmed that the Justice Department had opened a criminal investigation into his congressional testimony related to the renovation of the Federal Reserve’s two historic main buildings on Washington, D.C.’s National Mall.

[TRUMP NOMINATES KEVIN WARSH TO SUCCEED JEROME POWELL AS FEDERAL RESERVE CHAIR]

“I have very few questions. I’m a real fan of [Warsh] and I’m hoping we can get disposed of the Powell investigation, so I’d be in a position to vote for him,” Tillis told Fox News Digital.

“I have no problems at all with him. I’m looking forward to meeting him, because, like I said, I’ve been a fan,” he added.

Tillis has vowed to block any Federal Reserve nominee until the Trump administration concludes its criminal probe involving Powell. As a member of the Senate Banking Committee, his hold is especially consequential. Overriding it would require a discharge vote on the Senate floor, an extraordinary step that needs 60 votes and is widely seen as a long shot.

Trump tapped Warsh to succeed Powell, whose term as chair ends in May, but he must first win Senate confirmation by a simple majority — a process that typically starts with a hearing and vote in the Senate Banking Committee.

Warsh’s potential ascent to the top of the world’s most powerful central bank comes at a turbulent moment for the Federal Reserve.

With the Justice Department conducting a criminal probe involving Powell, the Supreme Court weighing limits on the Fed’s independence and rising cost-of-living pressures testing Trump’s economic agenda, the stakes for the next chair are intensifying.

What began as tension over interest-rate policy has spiraled into a broader confrontation, marking one of the most challenging stretches of Powell’s eight-year tenure leading the Fed.

Powell called the DOJ investigation “unprecedented” in a video statement and another example of what he described as Trump’s ongoing threats lobbed at the central bank. His unusually public response, after days of private consultation with advisors, marked a sharp departure from his typically measured approach.

[TRUMP VS THE FEDERAL RESERVE: HOW THE CLASH REACHED UNCHARTED TERRITORY]

Powell, widely viewed as one of the most crisis-tested Federal Reserve chairs in modern U.S. history, built his career as a lawyer and investment banker in New York before entering public service in the administration of President George H.W. Bush.

He joined the Federal Reserve’s Board of Governors in 2012 and was nominated by Trump to lead the central bank in 2017.

Like Powell, Warsh is not an economist by training. Instead, he brings a background in law and finance that has shaped his views on the Federal Reserve.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in public policy from Stanford University in 1992 and a law degree from Harvard in 1995. He built his career at Morgan Stanley and, at 35, became the youngest person to serve on the Fed’s board in 2006.

Though he stepped down in 2011, he was widely recognized as the Fed’s key liaison to Wall Street during the 2008 financial crisis. He previously worked in the Bush administration as a special assistant to the president for economic policy and executive secretary at the National Economic Council.

Warsh was among Trump’s leading candidates to replace Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen in 2017. However, Trump ultimately appointed Powell to the role.

Does Trump even know what’s happening in Iran?

On Saturday, President Donald Trump claimed it was Tehran that struck an Iranian elementary school early in the war, killing scores of children.

On Monday, he admitted he basically had no idea what he was talking about when he said that, then went on to suggest other countries, including Iran, use Tomahawk missiles, the type of munition that appears to have hit the school. Iran does not have Tomahawks.

When pressed at a news conference why nobody else in his administration was making the same claim about Iran being responsible (and instead pointing to an investigation), Trump said,”Because I just don’t know enough about it.”

He added that he would respect the findings of the investigation.

Just to put a fine point on that: Trump not only says he shared this claim despite appearing to know little about the situation; he’s also saying he didn’t know much about perhaps the single most controversial strike of the war.

It’s a strike that had become a huge international story by the time he weighed in — and one that even some Republicans fear could do real damage to the war effort, if the US was indeed culpable. (The US military was likely responsible, according to a CNN and expert analysis of evidence, and new video has emerged that appears to show a US missile targeting the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps naval base adjacent to the school.)

But apparently, Trump was out of the loop.

This is hardly the only example of the president seeming to have a loose grasp of what’s happening on the ground in Iran.

Trump has often had a complicated relationship with the truth, but it’s striking to see that play out in the context of a war.

The school strike wasn’t even the only example from Monday’s press conference.

At another point in his introduction, Trump seemed to claim that Iran’s Gulf neighbors had joined the war effort against Tehran alongside the United States and Israel.

“Their neighbors were largely neutral — or at least weren’t going to be involved — and they got attacked,” he said. “And it had the reverse effect. The neighbors came onto our side and started attacking them, and actually quite successfully. If you look at Saudi Arabia, you look at UAE, Qatar and others.”

But this does not reflect reality.

It’s true that Iran retaliated against US and Israeli attacks by striking US assets in its Gulf neighbors. But it’s not true that this led those neighbors to join the war:

    • The UAE has come under the most fire from Iran, as CNN’s Paula Hancocks reported Tuesday. But it has not struck Iran, with which it has a long history of business ties, and appears to be trying to exert pressure in other ways.
    • Saudi Arabia has threatened retaliation against Iran if Tehran keeps attacking it, Reuters reported, but it has not joined the war.
    • A spokesman for Qatar’s foreign ministry, Majed al-Ansari, has said, “Qatar has not been part of the campaign targeting Iran.” And Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani told Sky News on Monday, “We continue to seek de-escalation.”

The fact that these Gulf countries haven’t joined the fight was the subject of Sen. Lindsey Graham’s ire Monday night on Fox News, just hours after Trump spoke.

“To Saudi Arabia, our embassy was hit in Riyadh,” the South Carolina Republican said. “Do you not have an obligation to join the fight with us?”

Graham also called the UAE’s decision “so disappointing.”

Trump in the same news conference also wagered that the slowdown in the Strait of Hormuz off Iran’s southern coast “doesn’t really affect us,” because the US now produces so much oil of its own.

Other countries do rely more on Gulf oil — especially those in Asia — but the global economy is interconnected enough that the US has obviously felt the ill effects, especially when it comes to oil prices.

And of course, there are Trump’s claims about Iran’s capabilities and his justifications for launching the war in the first place.

He has repeatedly claimed that Iran would have “soon” been able to hit the United States with an intercontinental ballistic missile, that it was planning to preemptively strike the United States, and increasingly of late that it was also planning to take over the whole Middle East.

But none of these have been backed up by known intelligence. And much like Trump’s now softened suggestion that Iran struck its own school, he’s one of the few people even talking in some of these terms.

Trump often seems to be residing in an elaborately crafted alternate reality.

But it’s one thing to do that with domestic policy; it’s another to appear so disconnected from reality when you are waging war in a highly combustible region.

Yet that seems to be the state of play, with no signs that Trump’s decisions will be grounded in reality any time soon.

After her father’s addiction led to a $91K gambling spiral, GOP Rep Erin Houchin pushes addiction reform

The POINTS Act would create the first federal fund specifically dedicated to gambling addiction treatment

Rep. Erin Houchin, R-Ind., spoke with Fox News Digital about her new bipartisan bill to help people get treatment for gambling addiction, and her own family history battling it.

Rep. Erin Houchin, R-Ind., was in college when her father was “raking up thousands of dollars of debt” while battling a crippling gambling addiction she says was brought on by medication to treat his Parkinson’s disease diagnosis.

Now, the Indiana Republican is working to make sure other American families can seek help for their loved ones before facing the same monetary problems.

“The POINTS Act is about helping people who are struggling with gambling addiction, by utilizing existing excise tax revenue to issue grants to states and jurisdictions, including Indian tribes across the country, for the use of education and training on preventing and treating gambling addiction,” Houchin told Fox News Digital.

Her bipartisan bill, the Providing Opportunities for Individuals in Need of Treatment and Support (POINTS) Act, is a rare bipartisan initiative in Congress being co-led with Rep. Andrea Salinas, D-Ore.

BILL MAHER LAMENTS RISE OF GAMBLING CULTURE AMONG YOUNG AMERICANS DURING ‘REAL TIME’

It’s an issue Houchin said she is passionate about, given her own family history — which she said is “not unique.”

“Unfortunately, many families across the country have had similar experiences, if not from Parkinson’s, but from other illnesses and just suffering from addiction in general,” she said. “And it can cripple families and ruin their future if it’s not treated.”

Her own father was 55 when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, Houchin said, and the gambling addiction set in soon after.

JOHN RICH SAYS GAMBLING ADDICTION BECAME ‘GROSS’ MISUSE OF GOD-GIVEN SUCCESS

“My mom would tell stories that, you know, they often would go out west if they’d take a vacation, and it would be difficult for her to get him through the airport at Las Vegas because of the casino that’s right there as you pass through,” Houchin said.

She told Fox News Digital that her father’s doctors knew little about why the medication caused his gambling addiction, but suggested it took her family years to financially recover.

“My mom just let me know that she just paid off a second mortgage, took her about 10 to 15 years to pay it off, around $91,000 of gambling debt that my dad had raked up over the course of his illness after being prescribed this medication,” Houchin said. “So we want other families to have the support system necessary to have the resources to treat gambling addiction.”

Her legislation, which is also backed by Reps. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, R-Iowa, and Troy Carter, D-La., would create a first-of-its-kind federal fund dedicated to specifically addressing gambling addiction.

She also pointed out that it would not be funded by any new taxes on Americans.

“This is existing excise taxes that are going to be distributed in the form of grants for states that adhere to the principles in the POINTS Act, which is providing resources, not just to healthcare professionals, but also for families on how to access gambling addiction treatment,” Houchin said.

Both she and Salinas also argued the legislation was critical now, given the meteoric rise of sports betting via apps and other easily accessible means.

“As sports betting and online gambling continue to expand across the country, we have a responsibility to ensure people struggling with addiction are not left behind. Gambling addiction can devastate individuals and families, yet too many communities still lack the resources needed to provide prevention, treatment, and recovery support,” Salinas told Fox News Digital.

“The POINTS Act helps close that gap by investing existing gambling excise tax revenue into programs that expand care, raise awareness, and connect people to the help they need.”
