    2026-10-12T16:22:24.599Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/10/12/politics/judge-furious-trees-cut-down-washington-dc-golf-course

Judge ‘furious’ as 430 trees are chopped down from golf course Trump wants to renovate

    2026-10-12T16:22:24.599Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/10/12/politics/judge-furious-trees-cut-down-washington-dc-golf-course

A federal judge on Monday said she was “furious” with the Trump administration’s move over the weekend to cut down at least 430 trees from a Washington, DC, public golf course that President Donald Trump is seeking to renovate.

US District Judge Ana Reyes, who is overseeing a legal challenge to Trump’s plans to overhaul the East Potomac Golf Course, put a tentative hold on any further tree removal through Tuesday afternoon after an emergency hearing Monday.

“I actually don’t think courts should be playing ‘Parks and Rec,” Reyes said, but she believed that, without any order from the court, the administration would move forward with chopping down hundreds of more trees.

“So now we are all going to have a massive fire drill because the government can’t be trusted,” she said.

Reyes began the hearing by telling Justice Department attorneys they had lost “credibility” with her because they gave less than a day’s notice before cutting down the trees.

“More than just being upset and furious right now, I am just beyond disappointed with the government,” Reyes said. When a DOJ attorney said they had done their “best” to give her and the plaintiffs a heads-up, the judge said, her voice raised, “No, you did your absolute worst.”

“I am thoroughly unamused right now,” Reyes also said.

Watch: Tree removal begins at East Potomac Golf Links

She demanded that two National Park Service officials appear at the virtual hearing, which lasted more than three hours, to testify about how the plans to remove the trees came to be. The project came out of an October 5 meeting, one of the officials testified, during which the official was told to carry out a seven-year-old proposal seeking to restore the course’s “cultural” heritage.

Reyes said the officials failed to provide any reason for why hundreds of trees needed to be removed so suddenly and will require that a top Trump appointee at the Interior Department testify Tuesday. After a Justice Department questioned the relevance of the testimony, the judge said it appeared the court had been misled about the administration’s plans for the course.

“The question goes to whether or not I have been lied to, whether I have been lied to in declarations about the plans, whether I have been lied to about the timing of things,” Reyes, who was appointed to the bench by President Joe Biden, said.

The park is one of several renovation projects Trump is working on in Washington, DC. The administration’s desire to turn the public course into a professional course — a renovation that could cost between $20 million and $49 million — has been wrapped up in litigation and angered those who fear it may take away a public and affordable place to play golf in the nation’s capital.

The Interior Department first gave notice of the tree removal plans on Friday evening in a filing describing the tree-chopping as part of a long-standing maintenance plan that was not connected to “renovation or redesign of the Golf Course.” Crews were at the park by Saturday morning chopping down the trees.

Kevin Griess, the superintendent of the National Mall and Memorial Parks, testified Monday that his office came up with the plan last week that identified the specific trees that were to be cut down. His office had planned to remove another 100-plus trees from other areas of the park.

He said the removal plan was moving forward now because resources and NPS workforce that had been surged for the America 250 events over the summer had recently become available. He said the only awareness he had of Trump’s own plan to redo the golf course was from social media.

Griess’ office was carrying out a directive from a top National Park Service official, who had told them last week to carry out a 2019 plan known as the Cultural Landscapes Report. The report proposed making East Potomac and other golf courses look more in line with how they looked when they first opened.

That official, Frank Lands, the NPS deputy director of operations, said he was given the instruction to implement 2019 recommendations at an October 5 meeting with Greg Wischer, a political appointee, who is the Interior Department’s deputy chief of staff. Lands said he was told to execute the plan as soon as “practicable,” while doing so in a way that was safe, didn’t disrupt golf play and that completed the appropriate environmental reviews. Neither official could answer the judge’s questions about how much the tree removal project will ultimately cost taxpayers.

Lands said that before last week, he had been involved in some discussions the 2019 cultural recommendations and that some of those discussions also touched how those recommendations would fit with Trump’s plans for remaking the golf course, but Lands wasn’t “privy” to those details. Lands revealed that two or three months ago, he met with premiere golf course architect Tom Fazio and showed him the course, but the official testified he had not spoken to Fazio or the White House about Trump’s proposed renovation since then.

At the conclusion of the hearing, Reyes noted that some of the same agency officials who were involved in carrying out the recent tree removal had submitted court declarations asserting that there were no concrete plans to implement Trump’s proposed overhaul for the golf course.

Reyes accused the administration of “double speak” and said it was “preposterous” for the officials to think that they didn’t have to include the tree removal plans in their court declarations. She will also issue an order requiring the administration to give 72 hours notice of any plans for the golf course, tree removal or otherwise, while the case plays out.

我们将通过 discharge petition( discharge petition即 discharge petition,指绕过党派领袖直接将法案提交全院投票的程序)将其强制提交全院投票,并将以压倒性优势通过。”

President Donald Trump last week touted a diesel agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin, asserting that prices for the fuel would swiftly fall, but some Republicans have responded by rebuking the president’s move.

“I have just concluded a highly successful discussion with President Vladimir Putin, of Russia, wherein it was agreed that Russia will immediately supply over 300,000 Tons of Diesel Fuel to the American and Global Marketplace, another 500,000 Tons during the month of November, and 1,000,000 Tons immediately thereafter. Additionally, based on the condition of their Diesel Refineries, Russia will then deliver, within a short period of time, 3,000,000 Tons of Diesel Fuel,” Trump declared in an Oct. 9 Truth Social post.

“Between our TOTAL CONTROL of the Strait of Hormuz, and this great announcement on Russian Energy, Diesel Prices for Americans and, indeed, the World, will be COMING DOWN, IN RECORD NUMBERS, AND FAST! Lower prices for Americans, especially our Great Farmers, Ranchers, and Truckers, is my Greatest Priority. This is a very big and important announcement. Additionally, it must be understood, that Iran will not have a Nuclear Weapon!” Trump declared.

The announcement sparked blowback from some Republicans, including outgoing Rep. Don Bacon of Nebraska, who declared in a post on X that Trump’s “policies towards Russia and Ukraine are failures.”

“Propping up Putin’s war economy is morally wrong as he uses that money to bomb cities,” Bacon asserted. “We need moral clarity not moral ambiguity.”

Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Pa., declared in a post on Saturday, “We will be introducing bipartisan legislation to block any and all purchases of Russian oil. It will be called the ‘Ronald Reagan Peace Through Strength Act.’ It will be forced to the Floor via discharge and it will pass overwhelmingly.”

Bacon shared Fitzpatrick’s post and noted, “I’ve already agreed to be an original cosponsor. Congress must make a stand.”

A bipartisan group of senators — including Democratic Sens. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, Ron Wyden of Oregon, as well as GOP Sens. Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Thom Tillis of North Carolina and John Curtis of Utah — joined together in a statement pressing the administration to “reverse course.”

“Congress explicitly banned Russian energy imports in 2022 to prevent American dollars from financing Putin’s brutal war against Ukraine. Congress was clear: The U.S. should not import oil from Russia until it ends its aggression against Ukraine and ceases threats against our NATO Allies,” the statement declares.

“President Trump’s decision to allow Russian diesel imports to the U.S. runs directly counter to that law. The Administration has also failed to consult with Congress or submit any explanation to justify its decision as required by statute. The United States should not provide Putin with a financial lifeline while Russia continues to kill Ukrainian civilians. The Administration must immediately reverse course,” the statement adds.

Tillis, an outgoing senator who is not seeking re-election, is the author of the recently released book, “How to Lose Friends and Antagonize Presidents.” Shaheen is also not seeking another term.

Former U.S. Energy Secretary Dan Brouillette explained during a Monday appearance on FOX Business that he does not expect the agreement to cause the price of diesel to decline significantly.

He said that he believes “it’s important for Americans to realize that … we may not be talking about brand new barrels to the marketplace. So, if there’s an expectation that prices are gonna come down dramatically as a result of this agreement, I’m a bit skeptical of that.”

Brouillette said that if the aim is to decrease “prices in the long term,” then it is “challenging to see how this is going to help. What we’re in essence doing is rearranging the barrels,” Brouillette explained, “we’re moving the barrels from one customer to another customer. We’re not producing new barrels of diesel, which is really what the market is expecting and wanting.”

    2026-10-12T16:50:59.121Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/10/12/politics/talarico-conspiracy-theory-maga-trump

MAGA watches another conspiracy theory blow up in its face

    2026-10-12T16:50:59.121Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/10/12/politics/talarico-conspiracy-theory-maga-trump

EDITOR’S NOTE: Stream the CNN & Jubilee Town Hall with James Talarico live Wednesday, October 14 at 8p ET with an All Access subscription.

Two weeks ago, GOP Sen. Eric Schmitt of Missouri saw his conspiracy theory about former special counsel Jack Smith implode spectacularly at a congressional hearing for all to see.

Rather than seemingly learning a lesson from that episode, the MAGA movement in recent days embraced another sketchy theory that quickly fell apart — that Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico was missing from the campaign trail because of a mental health episode.

There have been plenty of such episodes this year. And it’s hardly just random social media accounts.

The Talarico example is especially astounding for its reach. The idea that Talarico’s lengthy absence from the campaign trail was not due to the flu (as his campaign said), but rather a mental health episode quickly spread far and wide.

Over just a few days, it went from an admitted rumor; to some like former Los Angeles GOP mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt claiming they had actual sources; to winks and nods from Talarico’s GOP opponent Ken Paxton and President Donald Trump; to right-wing sites covering the still baseless claims; to some attempted independent journalism that has been repeatedly promoted by Elon Musk.

By Sunday afternoon, a pair of right-wing influencers shared audio of what they said was a call with a mental health center in Ohio seemingly confirming that Talarico had just been released from its facility.

“Looks like he was just discharged this evening,” a voice is heard saying. “That’s why I don’t have it.”

The story then exploded on the right. But it just as quickly fell apart:

    • The Bulwark and others obtained the full phone call showing the apparent employee had previously and repeatedly flatly denied any record of Talarico being at the facility. She only said the above quote after being unable to locate any records for a person who told her Talarico was her cousin and had been staying there.
    • The timeline didn’t even match up. The influencer said the call was placed on Saturday evening, so that would mean Talarico would have been discharged Saturday evening. But Talarico had already appeared publicly in Texas the night before and did so again on Saturday night.
    • The mental health center, called the Lindner Center of Hope, has now denied Talarico was ever there: “Representative James Talarico has never received treatment from Lindner Center of Hope.”
    • Talarico says he has never even been to Ohio.

Some on the right are now deleting their posts about the false claim. Others like former Trump adviser Caroline Wren are walking back the significance of the claim.

One of the two right-wing influencers who shared the audio, Nick Sortor, appeared at the White House last year during a roundtable on antifa.

For what it’s worth, as CNN’s Andrew Kaczynski has noted, Talarico did a virtual event on September 30 where he said he had the flu and looked physically unwell. He was then off the campaign trail for nine days — not the two weeks that many on the right have claimed — before reemerging publicly on October 9. Talarico also has type 1 diabetes, which can make flu symptoms worse.

But for the MAGA movement, this is merely the latest conspiratorial episode.

Two weeks ago, it was Schmitt presenting what he seemed to view as smoking-gun evidence that Smith had been at an Atlanta Hawks game in February 2024 and — the theory seemed to go — might have been coordinating with local prosecutors who had indicted Trump in Fulton County, Georgia.

Except it turned out Smith was actually at a basketball game in Maryland that night. And even if he was in Atlanta, it would have proven basically nothing.

Back in July, MAGA figures led the charge in embracing rumors and even flat-out claiming that GOP Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky — an unpopular figure among Trump supporters since he declared the president lost the 2020 election — was brain dead, amid his much-longer absence from public view. GOP Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin even cited a claim that a photo of McConnell was AI-generated, before later backing off. A GOP House member even said he didn’t know whether McConnell was alive.

McConnell later returned to the Senate.

Over the summer, many on the right embraced Trump’s baseless conspiracy theory that vandals had sabotaged the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. A conservative reporter posted supposed video proof. Trump’s Justice Department even indicted a former Olympian. But the Justice Department later acknowledged that the damage “was the result of a botched installation and not vandalism.”

In June, Republicans far and wide — including elected officials — suddenly promoted theories suggesting voter fraud was to blame for Pratt failing to make the runoff in the Los Angeles mayor’s race.

Except the theory rested on a complete misreading of the data and was debunked even by Trump’s DOJ and a top local GOP official. Pratt’s showing was also very much in line with how Republicans usually perform there. And, strategically, it would have made no sense for incumbent Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass to rig the system to promote a fellow Democrat, who would have a better chance at beating her in the runoff than Pratt.

And in February, many on the right shared supposedly damning evidence from right-wing influencer Nick Shirley citing 30 allegedly illegal voter registrations at a UPS Store in San Diego. Those promoting the story included Donald Trump Jr., who accused the media of ignoring it.

But fact-checkers noted that the UPS Store was actually on the ground floor of a mixed-use building with residential units above it. California elections officials said none of the registrations used the UPS Store’s suite number.

Of course, it’s entirely possible that the people promoting these theories don’t necessarily believe them — and that they just see value in promoting them, regardless of how true they are. Some MAGA influencers, after all, continued to promote Schmitt’s theory even after it fell apart.

It would seem especially expedient to promote such rumors about Talarico, given he has continued to lead Paxton in some Texas Senate polls and could give Democrats a crucial win in their quest for a Senate majority.

Or, as one participant on an X Spaces event about the Talarico story put it on Sunday: “Whether it’s true or not, people deserve to know the potential of this.”

Regardless of whether these people have a gullibility problem, the MAGA echo chamber now has a well-established credibility problem.

First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli said Chinese espionage is “extremely pervasive” in the U.S. following the arrest of an alleged Chinese agent in Los Angeles this month.

Essayli told Fox News Digital in an interview that his office has pressed charges against several alleged Chinese spies in recent months, saying Beijing is brazen in its attempts to build their access inside the U.S.

“I think it’s extremely pervasive,” Essayli said of Chinese spying. “China is one of our biggest adversaries, and they’re committed to advancing their interests. And they’re playing the long game, and so they are willing to put a lot of resources into developing sources, recruiting people within the U.S. to advance their interests.

CHINA EXPERT WARNS BEIJING WANTS AMERICANS — NOT THE CCP — TO SPREAD ITS MESSAGE

“They’re willing to steal our technology; they’re willing to engage in espionage here. So, there’s no limit to what China is willing to do. It is a huge, huge concern. We have to be vigilant, and we have to disrupt these operations on our soil,” Essayli said. “We have to protect our sovereignty.”

“If you look at just the cases we brought this year, just in my office, I mean, you had cases where the woman from Irvine was engaged in espionage against the Taiwanese president’s family member. I had a guy last week we arrested, he sold more than $300 million in SI chips, formerly known as AI chips, to China,” he continued. “You had a mayor of a local city that we charged for serving as an unregistered agent of China as well, pushing out their propaganda and taking orders from China.”

“So, it’s extremely pervasive. It’s a huge problem, but the FBI is on it,” he said. “They have entire squads dedicated to combating this, and we’re committed here at the U.S. Attorney’s Office to supporting those investigations and bringing criminal charges to disrupt these operations.”

Wanying Zhang, 34, of Irvine, was arrested earlier this month for allegedly working with an associate to photograph and record the family outside their Seattle-area home, according to a criminal complaint obtained by Fox News Digital.

Speaking on “The Big Weekend Show” Sunday, Essayli said Zhang is a naturalized U.S. citizen and confirmed the alleged surveillance targeted a relative of Taiwan’s president.

“She was conducting surveillance on behalf of the Chinese government. She was acting as a foreign agent,” Essayli said. “And she was spying on a relative of the president of Taiwan here in the U.S.”

The alleged target was Ting-Yu Lai, the U.S.-based son of Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te, CBS News reported, citing law enforcement sources. The complaint does not name him.

“I am video recording,” she allegedly added before sending two license plate numbers.

A Biden-appointed federal judge who previously drew a formal misconduct complaint from President Donald Trump’s Justice Department for alleged bias erupted at government lawyers again Monday, in a heated showdown over rapid tree removal at a historic golf course on national parkland.

Judge Ana Reyes unleashed her latest rebuke during an emergency hearing over hundreds of trees removed from East Potomac Golf Links in Hains Point, D.C. Trump wants to transform the historic public facility into a championship-caliber golf course like his courses in the U.S., Ireland and Scotland – the latest courtroom collision between the administration and its political opponents.

Journalist Scott MacFarlane, who live-tweeted from the hearing, described Reyes as “scream[ing]” at administration attorneys over the government’s late-Friday notification that tree removal would begin Saturday. A government lawyer acknowledged that approximately 430 trees had already been cut down, according to MacFarlane.

“You’ve lost credibility!” Reyes told government attorneys, according to MacFarlane’s live courtroom reporting.

The administration maintains that the removals implement a 2019 National Park Service landscape-restoration plan predating Trump’s redesign proposal for the links, which sit on an island connected to the city proper by the Jefferson Memorial and Francis Case Bridge at its western edge.

Reyes, who was born in Uruguay and nominated by Biden in 2023, previously grilled a Trump administration attorney about his religious beliefs during litigation challenging Trump’s restrictions on transgender military service — an order she called “biologically inaccurate” according to the Washington Post.

The judge questioned how Jesus Christ would respond to “telling a group of people that they are so worthless, so worthless that we’re not going to allow them into homeless shelters?” according to then-DOJ Chief of Staff Chad Mizelle’s complaint.

In a 2025 case, Reyes ruled that Trump violated federal notice requirements when he fired several inspectors general but then declined to reinstate them, according to Reuters.

Monday’s hearing brought another heated exchange, this time over when government lawyers learned of the tree-removal operation and why they waited until the end of the workweek to notify the court.

“At 4:55pm on a Friday of a holiday weekend, the plaintiffs and I get little notice that hundreds of trees are going to be chopped down,” Reyes reportedly fumed at the government, according to MacFarlane.

When government counsel reportedly acknowledged learning of the operation on Oct. 8 or 9 and said officials were awaiting details, Reyes demanded:

“Do you have email or a cell phone?”

MacFarlane tweeted that he had never heard a judge “scream at full-voice at a lawyer before,” while the UK Independent reported Reyes excoriated federal counsel for about 15 minutes.

The uproar comes as preservationists and progressive interests challenge the administration, including former Obama ethics lawyer Norm Eisen — who has engineered a “broad legal resistance” to the president through his group Democracy Defenders Fund, according to its mission statement.

Eisen tweeted a victory lap Monday after the court agreed to hear the case in an “emergency’ setting.

The administration disputed that argument, maintaining that the tree removal is authorized NPS landscape management separate from Trump’s proposed links renovation.

Republican concerns mount over livestreaming Fort Hood shooter’s execution

    October 12, 2026 / 1:36 PM EDT / CBS News

Washington — A growing number of Republicans are voicing concern over the Pentagon’s plan to livestream the execution of the Fort Hood shooter in December — or at the very least, saying they won’t be watching.

Over the weekend, President Trump said the administration was still making a determination about whether the firing-squad execution would be livestreamed, after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that it would be. The execution of Nidal Hasan, the ex-Army major convicted of the 2009 killing of 13 people at Fort Hood, is scheduled for Dec. 3.

House Speaker Mike Johnson told CBS News that some in the House Republican conference don’t approve, and said he planned on bringing those concerns to the White House.

“There are colleagues who have concerns,” Johnson told national correspondent and chief Washington analyst Robert Costa in an interview. “The concern would be that you would create a video that would be a recruiting tool for future terrorists. You know, we’ve got to think through the policy implications of all that. I wouldn’t be watching it if it was aired. But there’s a lot of opinions on that. I think there’s still some time to talk about that. … I need to tell the White House what some of my colleagues think about that, and not everybody is in favor of the idea.”

Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska said there is “no need to livestream any execution, including this one,” urging the Pentagon to change course.

“I would expect this from terrorists and dictators, but not here in America,” she wrote on X. “It would give this individual, who deserves no further notoriety, the martyrdom he seeks. How we carry out justice matters just as much as the justice itself, so I urge the Pentagon to reverse this gruesome decision.”

Sen. Kevin Cramer of North Dakota said in a statement, “The death penalty is not entertainment.” He said families of the victims deserve justice. “But publicizing the execution of religious extremists provides exactly what terrorists crave: an audience. It converts the most consequential punishment a government can impose into a public spectacle.”

“Justice will be served, but the United States of America does not and should not livestream executions,” Republican Rep. Ann Wagner of Missouri wrote on X.

Rep. Rob Bresnahan Jr. of Pennsylvania wrote, “An execution shouldn’t be a live-streamed spectacle. The focus should be on justice for the victims and their families, not turning an execution into entertainment. Their pain deserves respect, not a public show.”

Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina on Friday called livestreaming the execution “beyond disgusting.”

Only one Republican member of Congress has publicly voiced clear support for livestreaming the execution — Rep. Andy Ogles of Tennessee.: “Excellent. Public execution is what this terrorist deserves,” he wrote on X. “We will be watching.”

Vice President JD Vance said Friday that he wouldn’t be watching if it’s livestreamed, and added, “I don’t know that that’s actually going to happen.”

“So whatever the controversy is about the method of the execution, I hope that people don’t forget that this is a guy who brutally murdered a lot of innocent people,” Vance told reporters. “Now that said, I mean, look, if it’s ultimately livestreamed, I’m not going to be watching it.”

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin defended the livestreaming decision on “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan” this weekend. Asked if the administration risks making Hasan a martyr, Mullin responded, “No one has to watch it.” Pressed further on whether the decision risks radicalizing others, Mullin said, “I think people need to understand if you attack— if you attack America, we will come after you, and we will make sure that the— that the punishment fits the crime.”

On Saturday, Mr. Trump floated the possibility that the plans could still change.

“There are two thoughts: don’t show it and show it,” the president told reporters at the White House Saturday. “‘Cause you know, by showing it, maybe other people won’t be doing what he did. So I’ll make a decision ultimately. I know what the military would like to do, but I’ll make a decision.”

The president has given seemingly conflicting information as to whether he was involved in the decision to livestream the execution.

When a reporter asked the president Friday if he authorized or approved the livestreaming decision, he said, “Absolutely, I did.” But in an interview with CNY Central Syracuse later that day, he said he “wasn’t involved in that decision” to livestream the execution, while saying he understood that decision was made to “have it serve as an example.”

Judge chastises Justice Department lawyers after hundreds of trees cut down at D.C. golf course

    October 12, 2026 / 3:08 PM EDT / CBS News

Washington — A federal judge on Monday rebuked the Justice Department after hundreds of trees were cut down at East Potomac Golf Links in Washington, D.C., on Saturday with little notice, telling government lawyers that they have “lost credibility.”

U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes held a nearly four-hour virtual hearing Monday and ordered Kevin Griess, superintendent of the National Mall and Memorial Parks, to testify under oath about what led to the felling of 430 trees at the course, which President Trump wants to overhaul. During the hearing, she also demanded Frank Lands, deputy director of operations for the National Park Service, call-in to answer questions.

“I am at a total loss to understand what has happened here other than, Occam’s Razor time, that the government intended to do precisely what it has done,” which is delay informing the plaintiffs and the court of impending action so they could put a plan in place to raze hundreds of trees, Reyes told Marissa Piropato, a Justice Department lawyer.

The judge began the hearing telling Piropato she is “furious” and “thoroughly unamused right now.”

Reyes extended a temporary order blocking the National Park Service from cutting down any additional trees, including for routine maintenance, until 2 p.m. Tuesday as she considers her next steps. She also said she will issue an order requiring the Justice Department to provide her three days’ notice of any forthcoming action at the golf course.

The judge had repeatedly asked the Justice Department to provide the court with notice if the Interior Department and National Park Service planned to conduct any construction or similar activity at East Potomac, which would allow her the opportunity to review that action and, if warranted, issue a court order.

Government lawyers told the court in a filing just before 5 p.m. on Friday that the National Park Service would start clearing trees from the course on Saturday as part of a “tree management and cultural landscape rehabilitation project.” Griess said in a declaration timestamped Friday at 4:37 p.m. that a group of 169 trees would be removed first, followed by a second tranche of 90 trees. He said an estimated 529 trees in all would be felled as part of the project.

But on Sunday, lawyers for the D.C. Preservation League, which filed a lawsuit with two golfers challenging Mr. Trump’s plan to transform East Potomac, said crews had cut down all 529 trees on Saturday alone, including “healthy, mature oaks and maples.”

They requested an emergency order blocking the National Park Service from removing any more trees after Justice Department lawyers told the preservation group that the tree-removal operation was moving “faster than anticipated,” according to court papers. The Trump administration told the D.C. Preservation League that “hundreds of additional trees would be felled imminently,” though rain Sunday impacted that plan.

Another roughly 99 trees have been flagged for removal, according to the Justice Department. Griess, the superintendent of the National Mall and Memorial Parks, said the 430 trees that were felled were not identified as hazardous or raising safety concerns.

During the hearing, Reyes repeatedly pressed Piropato about when she learned that the National Park Service planned to cut down the trees and why she waited until Friday to inform both the plaintiffs and the court.

“Ignorance is not an excuse here,” she said.

Reyes said she is “beyond disappointed” in the government.

“There are American citizens who are deeply concerned with the actions of the government, and I have repeatedly, on the record, said ‘don’t be concerned. I trust the government,’” Reyes said, adding, “I do not understand why this went forward on Saturday. Why did this go forward on Saturday?”

The judge also pressed Griess and Lands, who said he was testifying from a vehicle in a parking lot, on who ultimately gave the go-ahead to cut the trees down over the weekend. She called for Gregory Wischer, deputy chief of staff at the Interior Department, to answer questions, but Piropato said she could not get in contact with him.

Griess, whose work includes oversight of East Potomac Golf Links, said he submitted a tree-management plan, which included removals, to the head of the National Park Service on Oct. 5 and received approval for the plan the following day. But both he and Lands said there wasn’t any urgency to remove the trees Saturday.

Griess told the court that his tree-removal plan aims to fulfill recommendations laid out in a 2019 Cultural Landscape Report, which calls for restoring “links style and historic vegetation (rough grasslands, thin trees between fairways, and sentinel deciduous trees)” at East Potomac.

Designed by golf course architect Walter J. Travis, East Potomac opened to the public in the 1920s as a links-style course, which are typically built along the coast, Griess said. Those types of golf courses have few trees and lower vegetation, he said.

But in the more than 100 years since East Potomac opened, different types of plantings were allowed on the course, and “there appeared to be no coherent adherence to the original design,” Griess said. He told the court that the National Park Service intends to stay true to the stated intent of East Potomac as a links course.

Griess said he moved forward with putting together the tree-removal plan after funding and National Park Service employees working on events related to America’s 250th birthday were freed up following the Freedom 250 Grand Prix in August.

But lawyers for the D.C. Preservation League pushed back on the Trump administration’s argument that it cut down the trees to implement the seven-year-old Cultural Landscape Report and noted that Mr. Trump’s plan to renovate the East Potomac golf course “will require massive tree-clearing.”

They argued that the administration’s implementation of the plan violates the National Environmental Policy Act, which requires federal agencies to assess the environmental impacts of proposed action. The plaintiffs accused the Trump administration of skirting its obligations under the law by conducting smaller, segmented projects, like the tree-razing.

“What Defendants are doing now goes beyond routine maintenance, or maintenance of any kind. Defendants have begun an operation that is unprecedented in East Potomac Park’s 130-year history: felling more than 500 trees in a single day, with plans to cut down hundreds more as soon as the weather permits,” lawyers for the D.C. Preservation League wrote in their request for emergency relief.

Zelenskyy accuses Putin of defying Trump’s ceasefire push, sends pointed message to White House

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told Fox News on Monday that Russia continued attacking Ukraine’s energy infrastructure despite President Donald Trump’s announcement of what he called an immediate energy ceasefire, accusing Vladimir Putin of rejecting Washington’s peace efforts and calling for greater pressure on Moscow.

“We are ready today for energy ceasefire, as President Trump said. But I’m not sure that Putin is ready because even after yesterday’s messages from the president about energy ceasefire, Putin attacked our gas infrastructure,” Zelenskyy told Bill Hemmer in a live interview on “America’s Newsroom.”

Asked whether Ukraine would honor the ceasefire, Zelenskyy answered, “Of course,” insisting that Kyiv had already refrained from striking Russian energy facilities overnight.

“We didn’t attack any energy objects on the territory of Russia because President Trump said that there will be an energy ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia. And we didn’t attack, but Russia attacked our gas stations, energy infrastructure, infrastructure and other things,” he said.

The Ukrainian leader described the attacks as Putin’s response to Trump’s initiative.

“It was his answer to President Trump. He attacked our energy infrastructure,” Zelenskyy said. “The communication from Russia was very clear that they don’t know anything about energy ceasefire.”

Trump announced Sunday on Truth Social that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an immediate halt to attacks on energy facilities. But Moscow has not confirmed accepting such an agreement, and the precise scope of Trump’s proposal remains disputed.

According to Axios reporting Sunday, a White House official said the proposal initially focused on halting attacks on oil refineries, with a broader ceasefire covering power plants and electricity grids potentially following. The official acknowledged that Russia had not yet agreed.

Zelenskyy pushes back on Trump’s refinery demands

During the interview, Hemmer pressed Zelenskyy on whether Ukraine would halt attacks on Russia’s extensive oil-refining network, which has become a point of contention between Washington and Kyiv amid rising global fuel prices.

Zelenskyy argued that a ceasefire limited to refineries would fail to address Ukraine’s greatest vulnerability: its electricity supply.

“When we speak about energy ceasefire, it means only one thing: that they don’t attack our energy infrastructure, and we don’t respond to their energy infrastructure. This is called energy ceasefire.”

Asked again whether Ukrainian forces would refrain from targeting Russian refineries, Zelenskyy gave a conditional commitment. “If Russia will not attack our energy, we will not attack the energy,” he said.

Trump has repeatedly criticized Ukraine’s attacks on Russian oil refineries, arguing that they contribute to higher fuel prices. On Friday, he announced an agreement with Russia to release diesel supplies to the U.S. and global markets, a decision that drew criticism from lawmakers concerned about providing Moscow with additional revenue.

Zelenskyy challenged Trump’s assessment of what is driving diesel prices, pointing instead to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.

“Everybody understands that the price on diesel doesn’t depend on our attacks on diesel in Russia,” Zelenskyy told Hemmer. “Everybody understands that it depends on the blocking of Hormuz Strait.”

‘Only our people can change’ Ukraine’s president

The interview also exposed tensions over Trump’s calls for Ukraine to hold new presidential elections.

Over the weekend, Trump criticized Zelenskyy and suggested Ukraine needed a new president, arguing that Kyiv had missed opportunities to reach a negotiated settlement with Russia.

“If President Trump wants to change the leader in Ukraine, he has to know that only our people can change,” Zelenskyy responded.

The Ukrainian president said he was willing to organize an election but argued that voting remained impossible without a substantial pause in hostilities.

“I’m ready for elections. Really, we need a minimum 60 days for security of infrastructure to prepare for elections,” he said.

Zelenskyy described continuing Russian drone and missile attacks as an immediate threat to voters. “We are speaking about thousands of drones, ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, how can people vote?” he asked.

“It’s not even about the law. The law is very important. But we speak first of all about security.”

He also said he last spoke directly with Trump in New York during the U.N. General Assembly in late September.

Russian attacks continue as Moscow resists ceasefire

The interview came after another series of Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities and residential areas.

Ukraine’s charge d’affaires in Washington, Denys Sienik, said Sunday that Russian forces struck a power plant in Kyiv, disrupting electricity and water supplies, before attacking a thermal power plant in Kharkiv following Trump’s announcement.

“In total, over the course of the week, Russia struck electricity generation and transmission facilities more than 200 times,” Sienik wrote on X on Oct. 11, 2026.

East2West News agency reported Monday that three civilians — a 16-year-old boy and two women, ages 19 and 51 — were killed in a strike near a grocery store in the Kharkiv region. The agency also reported that five people were wounded in an attack on a residential high-rise.

In Pisochyn, a woman described witnessing the bombardment of a power plant shortly after Trump’s announcement, according to East2West. “We believed the statement that they wouldn’t strike energy infrastructure,” she said. “Just ten minutes after that promise was made, there were already five strikes.”

The agency also reported a Ukrainian strike on a Russian military base in occupied Khrustalnyi, in the Luhansk region, where three large fires were reportedly visible. The damage and casualty figures could not be independently confirmed.

Reuters separately reported Monday that Russia continued striking Ukrainian energy targets despite Trump’s announcement, while Kyiv maintained that it had refrained from attacking Russian refineries.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, meanwhile, rejected the prospect of a 60-day ceasefire to facilitate Ukrainian elections, arguing that European countries would use the pause to replenish Ukraine’s weapons supplies.

“I don’t think he deserves a respite,” Lavrov said Monday, according to the BBC.

Trump’s Russian diesel deal draws criticism

The latest developments have intensified scrutiny of Trump’s decision to ease restrictions on Russian diesel, which critics argue could provide Moscow with additional revenue while it continues its military campaign.

Carrie Filipetti, executive director of the Vandenberg Coalition and a former deputy assistant secretary of state during Trump’s first administration, questioned whether the arrangement would undermine U.S. leverage over Putin.

“Both Russia and Ukraine seemed surprised by the announcement of an energy ceasefire, and unsurprisingly, Russia has continued to attack Ukrainian energy facilities — reportedly as recently as a few hours ago,” Filipetti told Fox News Digital.

“Putin probably hopes the new diesel deal — which directly undermines recent US legislation calling for an increase in tariffs and sanctions against Russian energy — will discourage President Trump from holding Putin accountable for these continued violations and attacks.”

Filipetti argued that Russian energy revenue remains a critical source of financing for Moscow’s war effort. “If we want a real ceasefire, paying directly for Putin’s war machine through this new diesel deal is not the way to do it,” she said.

“President Trump’s goal of a ceasefire could be a real win — but it’s only going to happen if we stop the diesel deal.”

Morgan Murphy, former head of public diplomacy for the Special Presidential Envoy to Russia and Ukraine, offered a different assessment, defending Trump’s efforts to secure a negotiated settlement. “President Trump has consistently prodded both sides toward the only realistic outcome — negotiation,” Murphy told Fox News Digital.

“Both sides are losing right now: Ukraine doesn’t have the combat power to retake seized land, and Russia is destroying its future demographics with every passing day.”

Murphy argued that prolonging the fighting would only deepen the human toll: “Trump is right to push for a ceasefire. An endless war of attrition benefits only the makers of weapons and coffins.”

In his Fox News interview, Zelenskyy also emphasized the human cost of the war, saying Russian strikes were killing between 20 and 30 civilians a day, a figure Fox News has not independently verified.

“We want to end this war as quickly as possible,” he said.

“Ceasefire is a good first step from both sides. This is very important.”
