One year ago this week, Texas passed a new congressional redistricting map, giving President Donald Trump his first major victory in his push to give Republicans a big boost heading into the midterm elections by drawing more right-leaning districts.

One year later, as they fight to hold their razor-thin House majority, Republicans are the big winners, with partisan redistricting netting them at least 10 additional right-leaning congressional seats in time for the midterms.

Democrats and left-leaning pundits repeatedly railed against Trump’s efforts and charged they would “shred our country’s democracy.”

Top Democrats aimed to fight fire with fire but fell short. Their efforts to keep pace with the GOP were derailed following major court rulings by the Supreme Court and Virginia’s top court earlier this year, which were seen as major legal victories for Republicans. And the GOP scored another redistricting win earlier this month in Missouri, when a judge allowed a new map, backed by Trump and passed last year by Republican state lawmakers, to be used in November’s elections.

Progressive pundits that cast Trump’s push for Texas to redraw its congressional map before the 2026 midterms as a threat to voting rights and democracy. Among them was former MSNBC anchor Joy Reid.

She branded the fight a “Voting Rights 911” and later titled a segment on “The Joy Reid Show” as “Texas’s War on Democracy Through Gerrymandering.”

John Oliver, host of “Last Week Tonight” on HBO, was also among a group of pundits that criticized the redistricting push as a power grab by Trump and the GOP.

Oliver said gerrymandering was the practice of manipulating maps “to get the outcome you want,” and called it “putting a heavy thumb on the scale of who gets elected.”

Fox News Digital reached out to representatives for Reid and Oliver to see if they continue to stand by their criticism, but didn’t receive responses by the time this story was published.

It wasn’t just pundits who spoke out.

Top Democrats also took action, after Trump, aiming to prevent what happened during his first term in the White House when Democrats reclaimed the House majority in the 2018 midterms, first floated the idea of rare, but not unheard of, mid-decade congressional redistricting.

After Texas led the way last summer, Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin called a ruling by the conservative-dominated Supreme Court to greenlight the redistricting a victory for a “rigged map” meant to protect the GOP from midterm accountability.

“But it will backfire,” Martin predicted.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who led a successful redistricting effort in his Democrat-dominated state last year to negate the GOP gains in Texas, emphasized, “California will not sit idle as Trump and his Republican lapdogs shred our country’s democracy before our very eyes.”

And Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul of New York, who considered but decided against redrawing congressional maps in the blue-leaning state, charged that Trump and Republicans were aiming to “erode our democracy and drag us toward authoritarianism.”

A veteran Republican strategist sees the Democrats’ arguments as hypocritical.

“The left’s overcharged political rhetoric is undermined by Governor Gavin Newsom’s willingness to spearhead a power grab in his state that eliminated at least 5 GOP congressional seats,” Colin Reed told Fox News Digital.

Reed argued that “Democratic leaders had the same goal as Republicans with mid-decade redistricting; they just weren’t as successful, but their intent makes any complaints about democracy ring hollow.”

But Democrats stand by their resistance.

“Elected leaders in every state should respond aggressively to this unAmerican attempt to rig control of congress for a generation,” John Bisognano, executive director of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, told Fox News Digital.

While Texas and California were the first major battlegrounds in the redistricting war, the fight quickly spread from coast-to-coast.

Republican-controlled Florida, Missouri, and Ohio and swing state North Carolina, where the GOP dominates the legislature, drew new maps as part of the president’s push.

But in blows to Republicans, a Utah district judge late last year rejected a congressional district map drawn by the state’s GOP-dominated legislature and instead approved an alternate that created a Democratic-leaning district ahead of the midterms.

And Republicans in Indiana’s state Senate in December defied Trump, shooting down a redistricting bill that had passed the state House.

But Democrats were dealt a major blow this spring when the Virginia Supreme Court struck down the Democrat-controlled state’s congressional redistricting ballot measure, which would have produced up to four more left-leaning House seats.

Concurrently, a blockbuster decision by the U.S. Supreme Court that gutted key portions of the landmark Voting Rights Act – ruling that race should not dictate the redrawing of legislative districts – gave a handful of GOP-dominated Southern states the greenlight to move forward with redistricting.

The legal rulings locked in an advantage for Republicans in this year’s battle for the House. Now it’s up to voters to decide which party will control Congress.

But the redistricting fight is far from over.

Democrat-controlled New York is taking steps toward redistricting in time for the 2028 elections.

So is blue state Maryland, but a court ruling on Wednesday dealt Democrats a setback. A Maryland court blocked Democrats from adding a congressional redistricting initiative to the November ballot on Wednesday. The Democrat-backed effort would have allowed Maryland residents to vote on an amendment to the state constitution to let lawmakers redraw district maps ahead of the 2028 elections.

Meanwhile, battleground Georgia, where Republicans currently control the governor’s office and state legislature, is also mulling a move.

“The gerrymandering crisis Trump started last year is is not over. We expect him to continue demanding new congressional maps that manipulate voting districts to protect Republicans despite what American voters want,” Bisognano told Fox News Digital.

He urged state leaders to speak out and draw “responsive maps to ensure the national congressional map reflects the make up and the will of the American people.”

Trump’s ‘Lake America’ move revives one of his biggest political flops

It increasingly feels as though President Donald Trump is trying to do unpopular things ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

But he might have outdone himself with his latest move.

Trump on Thursday signed an executive order to change the name of Lake Ontario to “Lake America.” He did so after Canada declined to capitulate in the trade war he recently launched.

While there’s not yet polling on this specific move, it’s difficult to believe it will be anything but a complete political dud.

And while it’s unlikely to exercise Americans too much, it will likely feed into longstanding perceptions that Trump is more focused on trivial matters than the things they actually want, like lowering prices.

The move recalls one of Trump’s splashiest (so to speak) moves on his first day back in office last year, when he signed an order renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.”

But that went over like a lead balloon.

An Ipsos poll that week showed Americans opposed the renaming 70%-25%. About 8 in 10 independents opposed it, as did 45% of Republicans. More than four times as many Americans strongly opposed it (46%) as strongly supported it (10%).

A slightly later Marquette Law School poll showed similar— Americans opposed the renaming 71%-29%.

Both polls tested a number of early Trump moves or threatened actions. Remarkably, the “Gulf of America” was the most unpopular among eight things tested in the Marquette poll, and it was the second most unpopular among 15 tested in the Ipsos poll.

In both polls, in fact, it was more unpopular than even Trump’s pardons of January 6, 2021, defendants — perhaps the prototypical controversial early Trump move.

And since then, Americans have taken a pretty dim view of Trump’s penchant for renaming things — including after himself.

After his handpicked board of loyalists tried to rename the Kennedy Center after Trump, Americans said by a 2-to-1 margin that he had “gone too far” in making changes to institutions like it, according to CNN polling from last month. Just 9% of Americans in a Pew Research Center poll said it was appropriate to name things after Trump while he’s still president, yet his administration keeps trying to do just that — including, CNN reported last week, by potentially substituting Trump’s name for a Black war hero’s that was set to be on an aircraft carrier.

And there’s reason to believe that the “Lake America” move will play even worse than the “Gulf of America” did.

The main reason is that Americans tend to be more sympathetic to Canada than Mexico. While there’s a constituency for cracking down on Mexico, especially given decades of illegal immigration over the US-Mexico border, Canada doesn’t engender such negative feelings, recent polling suggests.

Indeed, when Trump launched tariffs against both Canada and Mexico early in his second term, the Canada ones were narrowly more unpopular, with more than 6 in 10 Americans opposing them.

(This, of course, hasn’t stopped Trump from launching another trade war with Canada.)

Americans also balked at Trump’s proposal to make Canada the 51st state. Marquette polling last year showed 75% of Americans opposed that.

The other main problem is the passage of time. While these kinds of stunts might have felt a little cuter when Trump was riding higher early in his term, they now risk reinforcing how preoccupied he is with not just trifles, but things that Americans decidedly do not want.

Polls have long shown around three-quarters of Americans think Trump is neglecting the most important issues, especially lowering prices. Instead, he’s waging war against Iran (which raises gas prices) and launching a trade war with Canada (which also could raise prices).

Now he’s casting a spotlight on the latter with a move that Americans thought was pretty stupid when he did it the first time. And it’s arguably even sillier than that was, given Lake Ontario wasn’t even named after the Canadian province. (It was actually named 200 years earlier, in the 17th Century.)

Even some Republicans are balking, with the GOP nominee for Wisconsin governor, Rep. Tom Tiffany, saying Thursday that the name should stay the same.

Trump joked in the Oval Office Thursday that he might not be done renaming bodies of water.

“We have a gulf. We have a lake. Now all we need is an ocean,” he said. “So maybe we’ll have to change the name of the Atlantic and/or the Pacific. Maybe we’ll change them both.”

You could say he’s playing the hits. But it’s really playing the flops.

Tigers, jaguars, bison among 135 exotic and endangered animals found in raid on fuel smugglers near U.S. border

Mexican authorities said Thursday that they had rescued Bengal tigers, mandrills, hyenas and even a camel during raids on a fuel smuggling ring in the northeastern state of Tamaulipas, on the U.S. border.

The 135 animals found at a ranch also included lions, buffalo, sulcata tortoises, spider monkeys, jaguars, an American bison and a green macaw.

Thirty-five of the animals, including the green macaw and sulcata tortoise, are classified as endangered species.

Mexican authorities regularly rescue exotic animals from properties owned by wealthy drug traffickers. Some Mexican drug cartels are known to house exotic cats as symbols of power and, occasionally, to dispose of their enemies. According to a 2023 U.S. indictment, some victims of a Sinaloa cartel faction were “fed dead or alive to tigers.”

On this occasion, however, the military found them during an operation targeting fuel smugglers.

Mexican authorities said Thursday that they had rescued over 130 exotic animals during raids on a fuel smuggling ring in the northeastern state of Tamaulipas, on the U.S. border. Mexico Government

Smuggling gasoline and diesel from the United States into Mexico and reselling it tax-free is a huge money-maker for organized crime gangs, including drug cartels.

During these latest raids on five properties, the military seized 18,000 gallons of diesel, fuel tanks, pumps, firearms, and tools.

One person was arrested.

Mexican authorities cracked down on fuel smuggling in 2025, when high-ranking navy officers and officials were implicated in the illegal trade.

Some 10 billion liters of black market fuel were seized at that time in Tamaulipas.

The attorney general’s office on Thursday formally charged Fernando Farias, a high-ranking officer who was expelled last week from Argentina, with fuel smuggling.

A former governor of Tamaulipas, Ernesto Ruffo, was also recently arrested on charges of fuel theft.

Fuel smuggling a growing problem

Fuel theft — more commonly known as huachicol in Mexico — has risen to the second most profitable revenue stream for Mexican cartels behind drug trafficking, according to the U.S. Treasury.

U.S. officials allege that some cartel members steal fuel and crude oil from Pemex by bribing insiders, tapping pipelines, siphoning refineries, hijacking tanker trucks, and intimidating employees.

The stolen fuel is then sold across Mexico, the United States and Central America, while crude oil is smuggled north via complicit brokers — frequently disguised as “waste oil” to evade taxes and environmental scrutiny, the U.S. Treasury discovered.

Once inside the United States, the oil is then funneled to unscrupulous importers along the southwest border, sold at deep discounts on U.S. and global markets with proceeds quietly funneled back to the cartels.

U.S. authorities have even accused the Jalisco New Generation cartel of operating its own service stations.

The United States has been cracking down. In June, the U.S. Treasury imposed sanctions on two Mexican men and nine companies involved in transportation, financial services and real estate, accused of being tied to a cartel-linked fuel theft ring.

In December, the Treasury Department imposed sanctions on a violent Mexican fuel-theft cartel and its imprisoned leader, nicknamed “The Sledgehammer.”

新华社报道，中国辽宁中医药大学和中国医科大学等机构的研究团队共纳入92项基于随机对照试验的系统综述和荟萃分析，所汇总数据涉及1744项原始随机对照试验。

综合分析结果显示，太极拳等中国传统运动可改善膝骨关节炎患者的身体功能和心理健康、颈痛患者的心理健康，以及纤维肌痛患者的睡眠质量。对太极拳的分析还显示，它可减轻慢性肌肉骨骼疾病引发的疼痛和僵硬，并可提高骨质减少或骨质疏松者多个负重部位的骨密度。

研究团队还发现，对于膝骨关节炎以及骨质减少或骨质疏松患者而言，持续时间更长、每周至少三次且总时长至少150分钟的这些运动通常带来的益处更多。

Mark Carney built his career managing crisis. Trump may be his biggest yet

Mark Carney once provided the last line of defense for the Harvard Crimson hockey team.

As the back-up goalie — and often the back-up to the back-up — Carney spent most of each season on the bench. But teammate Mark Benning recalls one critical playoff game sometime in the mid-80s when Carney, sent onto the ice to replace an injured player, stopped all shots from the opposing team.

“I never saw any time where he cracked under pressure,” said Benning, a venture capital executive still friends with Carney.

Some 40 years later, now as Canada’s prime minister, Carney finds himself back in the rink, this time against the world’s most formidable opposition: President Donald Trump, flanked by the $30 trillion US economy.

On Saturday, Carney rejected a trade deal with the United States after Trump officials made 11th-hour demands that, among other outcomes, would’ve limited Canada’s freedom to cut deals with other nations. Red lines crossed, Carney vowed dollar-for-dollar tariffs on American goods entering Canada, some as high as 50%.

It was a bold move, one that echoed a speech Carney gave at Davos in January, in which he called on the world’s “middle powers” to band together against Trump and his tariffs. “If we’re not at the table, we’re on the menu,” he said of countries like his, cut adrift by a “rupture” in the rules-based global order.

Canadians overwhelmingly approved of his decision to walk away. Once again, now in the eyes of his country, Carney had met the moment.

Carney has forged his career through catastrophe. Once the top central banker for Canada and then Britain, he has shepherded economies through the 2008 financial crisis and its aftermath.

Still, his transformation from policy wonk to prime minister in last year’s election owes much to the 47th president. Trump’s tariffs and repeated taunts undermining Canadian sovereignty created a political crisis voters trusted Carney to best manage.

But the same fight behind Carney’s political strength may become his undoing. A protracted conflict with Canada’s closest and most powerful trading partner would put Carney in a bind. If he holds firm, he risks deep harm to the Canadian economy. If he makes concessions, he risks losing the support of an infuriated public.

Carney, today celebrated in a moment of crisis, could end up pleasing no one.

‘Calm’ but ‘demanding’

In the days before Carney walked away from the trade talks, Howard Lunick, Trump’s commerce secretary, had been texting and calling. The direct line of communication was nothing new and Lutnick’s agency had jurisdiction over the issues at hand. Even so, his last-minute entrance into talks between American and Canadian trade teams was disruptive, according to two people familiar with the matter.

Lutnick is more friendly and less bombastic with Carney in private than his public persona might suggest,one person said. Still, Lutnick strongly opposed provisions in the developing agreement that would have substantially lowered US tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum and auto imports.

It was one backtrack of several that Carney said in a Saturday speech were “uneconomic, unfair, and undermined the net benefits for Canada, and called into question the reliability of any deal.”

Trump officials have rebuked Carney in the days since. Lutnick on Thursday rejected Canadian accounts of how talks had blown up, claiming Carney had “manufactured” a dispute to boost his domestic political standing. White House trade adviser Peter Navarro on Wednesday called the prime minister’s Trump-focused election victory last year the “worst thing that ever happened to Canada,” adding on CSPAN that “somehow, every time Carney dumps on Trump, the Canadian people reward him with political support.”

On Thursday, Trump signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America for US federal entities and saying, without mentioning Carney specifically, “The Canadian officials have treated us very badly. They’re nasty people.” He added that Canada is the “worst to deal with on trade,” claiming “they feel entitled.” Navarro warned Wednesday that “playing politics” with the US is “not going to end well for Canada.”

But Carney has handled greater emergencies. After Harvard, an economics Ph.D. at Oxford and more than a decade spent at Goldman Sachs, he moved into government in the run-up to the global financial crisis.

“Mark has always had the ability to see where an issue is going, understand the second- and third-order consequences,” said Tim Adams, a former US Treasury official during the George W. Bush administration, who often found himself in the same room as Carney. “He tends to be very prepared, very disciplined, and very comfortable operating under pressure.”

When the meltdown arrived in 2008, Carney was leading the Bank of Canada. James Moore, part of the country’s ruling Conservative government at the time and later its minister of industry, recalls an emergency cabinet meeting attended by Carney in the fall of that year. It was a time of pure havoc: Canada had just held a federal election and the global economy was beginning to buckle. Moore described Carney’s briefing that day as a “masterclass” — “blunt, calm, reassuring, and substantive.”

Carney now leads Canada’s Liberal Party, but Moore said he and other former members of that Conservative government “hold him in incredibly high regard and think that he’s doing a phenomenal job as Canada’s prime minister in these difficult times.”

The Bank of England poached Carney a few years later, appointing him the first foreign governor in the institution’s 330-year history. He helped steer Britain through the tumult of Brexit, appearing quickly after the 2016 vote to assure markets and citizens that he had a plan. He had warned openly of the economic risks, drawing criticism from pro-Brexit campaigners that he was veering too far into politics.

A report by Canadian magazine Maclean’s in October, citing an unnamed government staffer, painted Carney as short-tempered with some of his colleagues. The mood in Carney’s administration is tenser than that under his Liberal predecessor Justin Trudeau, who ran the place like “an encouraging teacher,” according to the publication.

Trudeau, the son of a Canadian prime minister, was familiar with the slings and arrows of politics. Carney, however, was more likely used to the deference that came from his position as the top finance guy, the steady hand in a complicated crisis, the magazine suggested.

“He’s demanding and is quite clear about what his standards would be, I think,” said Supriya Dwivedi, a former senior adviser to Trudeau who served with Carney on the advisory board for Canada 2020, a liberal think tank. “Because I think he’s such a hard worker himself, he kind of expects that of those around him – and there’s nothing wrong with that – but, of course, when you’re working very long hours and you’re in politics and not finance, you sometimes need a bit of a lighter touch.”

Carney’s tendency to arrogance was documented by Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail in profiles that long preceded his political career. His capacity for snappiness was on public display during a press conference days after he became prime minister last year.

CBC correspondent Rosemary Barton told Carney it is “very difficult to believe” that his many years in the private sector had created no possible conflicts of interest with his finances. He seemed irritated.

“Look inside yourself, Rosemary,” he said, adding,“I have left my roles in the private sector at a time of crisis for our country. I’m complying with all the rules.”

Carney always risked seeming out of touch. His career in central banking was bookended by years spent in private investing, at Goldman and then Brookfield, a Canadian asset management firm where he worked up until his run for the Liberal leadership in early 2025.

Despite a background as the son of two teachers, born in a tiny town in the Northwest Territories and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, and now with a 30-plus-year marriage and four daughters, it would always be difficult for the Finance Guy to become the Everyman.

Pollster Nik Nanos tracked the 2025 election campaign. When the public concerns focused on the cost of living, the Conservatives under Pierre Poilievre would experience a boost, he told CNN. But then Trump would do something chaotic, outrageous or directly antagonistic to Canada — like calling it the “51st state” — and support for Carney’s incumbent Liberal Party would pop.

“In 2025, we came off 10 years of the Justin Trudeau Liberal government, and by the end of their tenure, people were ready for massive change,” said Nanos, chief data scientist of Nanos Research. But the focus quickly evolved. Suddenly, it wasn’t about “who you liked or what party that you liked — it turned into a ballot question on who can best manage the relationship with Donald Trump.”

Still, Canadians, though angry with the Trump administration, want a cooperative trading relationship with the US,according to Nanos.Carney’s real political test will come later, he said, when the economic consequences of tit-for-tat tariffs, like possible layoffs and business bankruptcies, become clear.

“It’s kind of like a classic war. You know, war is declared, everybody’s cheering as the soldiers go out the door, until the first soldier comes home as a casualty,” said Nanos.

And it’s possible Carney shares the same fate as other leaders valorized in conflict only to see their standing fall once the fight is over, the common enemy gone and polarizing domestic issues return to the top of the public agenda; for Canada, those include expensive housing and battles over immigration and health policy.

For now, though, Carney holds a commanding lead in Canadian opinion polls and is even winning some support on the other side of the border.

Debbie Dingell, a Democratic congresswoman from Michigan, has said she believes Carney is well within his rights to resist her president. “We are so integral to each other. It’s economic security, and it’s national security. They are our family. What President Trump is doing to Canada is just not OK. I’m fine that Carney is standing up,” she told CNN on Wednesday.

“There’s nothing popular about what President Trump is doing,” said Chellie Pingree, a Democratic congresswoman from Maine. Carney, Pingree said, was doing the “right thing, staying tough.”

On Thursday, Carney was put in the unusual position of standing up for the name of one of the Great Lakes. He noted on social media that the name of Lake Ontario is older than both Canada and the US, and he wrote, “We know that America is changing. Their trading relationships, their foreign policies, their national monuments, their hydronym. Canadians also know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario – then, now and always.”

In Toronto, retiree Diana Bartlett, 75, told CNN that she usually leans toward parties to the left of the Liberals and that she’s wary of Carney’s focus on business, saying he seems to have “forgotten a little bit” about critical social issues including health care.

Still, she picked Carney’s party in the last election — with the threat of Trump a key factor in her vote — and said she’s“fully supportive” of his decision to take a hard line with the president.

“I wish he had walked away a lot sooner. I’m getting really tired of being jerked (around) by Trump and his minions,” she said while grocery shopping Wednesday. “I’m a senior citizen, and I will take up arms to defend this country.”

（华盛顿综合电）美国特朗普政府收紧外国留学生实习规定，警告违规高校可能失去招收外国学生的资格。

美国国土安全部8月24日向高校发出备忘录指出，当局在审核“学生及交流访问者计划”（SEVP）时发现，部分高校批准外国学生参加课程实习训练（CPT）的做法可能违规。CPT只适用于实习属于既定课程不可或缺部分的情况。

新指引促使一些学校，包括加州大学洛杉矶分校和伯克利分校，暂停处理部分外国学生的实习授权申请。

加州大学伯克利分校国际学生办公室形容，新指引范围更窄、要求更严格，校方短期内或难以批准部分申请；学位规定必须完成的实习，以及博士、硕士论文研究相关申请则不受影响。

国土安全部说，相关条例并未改变，但政府不再容忍学校和雇主滥用制度。美国政府认为，部分外国学生借学生签证实习，减少美国毕业生的就业机会。

《华尔街日报》引述一份报告说，美国高校去年秋季新入学的外国学生人数减少17%。

亚运会面临接待危机 组委会：新增人员须自理住宿

（东京综合电）定于9月揭幕的爱知—名古屋亚洲运动会面临接待危机。由于参赛总人数激增至1万7000人，日本组委会因预算吃紧和接待空间不足，已要求新增的参赛代表团人员自行解决住宿问题。

本届亚运会将于9月19日至10月4日在日本爱知县及名古屋市周边地区举行。组委会原先预计将有约1万5000名运动员与随队官员参与，规模本来就已超越夏季奥运会。然而，亚洲奥林匹克理事会上周公布的最新数据却攀升至1万7000人（包括1万1000名选手及6000名官员）。

未设专用选手村 依靠邮轮与货柜屋

为压缩办赛成本，本届赛事并未兴建专用的亚运选手村，而是采取分散安置方案，租用意大利“歌诗达赛琳娜号”（Costa Serena）邮轮供4000至5000名运动员入住。另约2000人入住临时集装箱式木屋，其余人员则分散在爱知县内及东京都等地的合作酒店。

随着亚奥理事会在今年3月临时增设桌式足球与板网球等项目，代表团规模进一步膨胀，让原本就紧张的接待能力彻底见底。

爱知县知事：无额外预算与空间

亚运组委会会长、爱知县知事大村秀章直言：“我们完全没有针对超额人数编列预算，现场也根本没有多余的住宿空间。如果他们坚持前来，就必须自行解决住宿。”

名古屋市长广泽一郎星期三（8月26日）也表达了相同立场。他坦言，无论从筹备时间、接待容量还是财政预算来看，要吸纳这批新增人数都极其困难。

据悉，地方组委会此前已正式向亚奥理事会提出缩减参赛人数的要求。针对目前的僵局，亚奥理事会尚未作出公开回应。
