ICE(美国移民及海关执法局)进入我们的社区,抢走人们的工作。

Dem candidate’s bizarre anti-MAGA tirade ends with ‘We have guns too’

    October 13, 2026 5:43pm EDT / Fox News

The Fayette County Council candidate told viewers she would ‘fire all Republicans’ and declared ‘we have guns too’

    By Charles Creitz, Fox News

Indiana county council hopeful Jaime West lashed out at Republicans during a candidate forum before delivering a pointed final message as a moderator moved to wrap up.

NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles!

A Democrat running for county council in eastern Indiana was ridiculed Tuesday after critics claimed she appeared “s— faced” and slurred her way through attacks on Republicans during a televised candidate forum.

During the forum, Fayette County Council candidate Jaime West said she would “fire all Republicans” if elected, railed against “MAGAs” she called “racist” and unintelligent and alleged that a sheriff’s nephew had threatened to kill her. Asked for a final message to voters, West responded: “We have guns too.”

“This is not a skit,” said LibsOfTikTok, a popular conservative punditry account run by commentator Chaya Raichik.

“Jaime West, a Democrat running for Fayette County Council in Indiana, gave an embarrassing interview where she appears to mumble and rant the entire time. Is she intoxicated?” Raichik asked on X.

Former litigator Viva Frei tweeted that the video initially appeared to be a “skit [or] high school video project.”

“I had to make sure she did not have a neurological disorder that could account for the slurred speech and insane rambling. She doesn’t. And even if she did have a diagnosed neurological disorder, ‘we have guns too’ after talking about firing all Republicans would ordinarily be disqualifying,” Frei said.

When asked one decision she would make if elected that constituents would find unpopular, West told the moderator, “Fire all Republicans.”

“I wouldn’t let them — I don’t even talk to them. I don’t like them. They voted against — their own state representative voted against her own party,” West continued while also pledging not to raise taxes.

“Y’all did this to us. … You made this happen. This ICE coming into our communities, stealing people’s jobs. I mean, I’ve been threatened so many times to my face by MAGA; we’ll call them, because there’s Republicans who actually get it. You know, there are good Republicans out there, but then there’s these MAGAs who are just racist and aren’t very intelligent at all,” West continued.

“They call you names. The sheriff’s nephew threatened to blow my head off. But, you know, what are you going to do?”

The moderator paused before asking West for a final message to voters.

“We have guns too,” West said as the moderator pivoted to informing viewers about how to vote in the Hoosier State’s elections this year.

West could not immediately be reached for comment. While it was not immediately clear which Indiana sheriff West was referring to, Zac Jones, who leads the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office where she is running, was stunned by the remark.

“I don’t know Jaime West, and she obviously doesn’t know me. I have five nieces and zero nephews. I’m not sure what she is talking about, and I’m certain she has no idea what she is talking about either,” Jones told Fox News Digital.

“It’s a sad day when this is the best the Democrat Party can get to run for this important local office.”

    blob:https://www.cbsnews.com/d6918245-0aef-48c2-b05d-5b272ef3629e

Trump officials now leaning against livestream of execution, sources say

Trump administration officials are leaning against livestreaming the execution of the ex-Army major convicted of the killing of 13 people at Fort Hood in 2009, sources familiar with the discussions said. Last week, the Pentagon had said that the public would be able to view the execution live.

President Trump had not yet made a final decision on Tuesday, two of the sources told CBS News.

White House and Pentagon spokespeople didn’t immediately comment.

There has been pressure from Congress and elsewhere not to livestream Nidal Hasan’s execution by firing squad, which is scheduled to take place on Dec. 3.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said last Thursday in an interview with Real America’s Voice that the Pentagon planned to make the execution public.

“He’s going to get a firing squad of soldiers, as it should be,” Hegseth said. “We’ll make sure that people are able to watch it, that it’s public — because people need to understand that there’s serious consequences for these types of things.”

CNN reported earlier Tuesday that Mr. Trump and his advisers were debating whether to air the firing squad execution live, and that Mr. Trump had remarked privately that he didn’t initially know Hasan was paralyzed from the waist down.

    blob:https://www.cbsnews.com/d6918245-0aef-48c2-b05d-5b272ef3629e

Several top Republicans in recent days expressed opposition to livestreaming Hasan’s execution, and Vice President JD Vance said that if it were broadcast live, “I’m not going to be watching it.”

As the president departed for a campaign rally in Alaska on Tuesday, a reporter asked him whether he’s decided to allow the execution to be livestreamed. “We’re looking at it,” Mr. Trump replied.

GOP House Speaker Mike Johnson also acknowledged colleagues “who have concerns” in an interview with CBS News national correspondent and chief Washington analyst Robert Costa. Among them, he added, is “the concern would be that you would create a video that would be a recruiting tool for future terrorists.” Johnson also said he would not watch the execution, and he told Costa, “I need to tell the White House what some of my colleagues think about that, and not everybody is in favor of the idea.”

Dem making Senate comeback bid says he wouldn’t support a Trump impeachment push

Sherrod Brown, who voted to convict after both House impeachments during Trump’s first term, is aiming to return to office

Ohio Republicans react to tight races in reliably red state: ‘Common sense vs crazy’

Fox News Digital spoke to GOP Sen. Jon Husted, political strategist Mehek Cooke, and Butler County GOP Executive Committee Chairman Art Sauerwein about Republican efforts to keep Ohio red in a challenging landscape.

Former Sen. Sherrod Brown, a Democrat currently running to regain a U.S. Senate seat in Ohio after losing his 2024 re-election bid, has indicated that he would not support impeaching President Donald Trump.

If Democrats win the House majority during the midterms this year, they could seek to impeach the president along party lines next year — if that were to happen, the matter would then head to the Senate.

“I can’t speak for everybody else, but I would not support an impeachment of Trump. There’s just simply no reason for that, no matter what happens in the midterms,” the former lawmaker told The Columbus Dispatch on Oct. 9

Brown’s campaign and the White House did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s requests for comment on Tuesday.

The Democrat, who previously served in the Senate from early 2007 until early 2025, lost a 2024 Senate contest to Republican challenger Bernie Moreno.

Brown is currently facing Sen. Jon Husted, R-Ohio, in the Buckeye State’s special U.S. Senate election.

In a statement provided to Fox News Digital on Tuesday, a Husted campaign spokesperson said, “Sherrod Brown sided with his party twice to impeach President Trump during his first term. Now he’s masquerading as a moderate, despite a career aligning himself with Bernie Sanders and AOC. Don’t be fooled; when radical Democrats call, Brown always toes the line.”

‘Peace through strength’: Trump Gaza plan gains global backing one year on

    October 13, 2026 12:18pm EDT / Fox News

Jack Keane: Trump’s Gaza peace deal is a ‘huge step forward’

Ret. Four-Star Gen. Jack Keane breaks down the next phase of President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace deal on ‘Fox & Friends.’ Keane explains how the historic agreement mandates the complete disarmament of Hamas and other armed groups, leading to the withdrawal of Israeli forces and the transition of power to a new Palestinian government.

A year has passed since President Donald Trump made history by brokering a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, setting in motion an ambitious peace plan aimed at bringing lasting stability to the region.

In the days and months since the ceasefire and Trump’s 20-point peace plan took hold, progress has drawn support from across the globe — including from unexpected quarters.

Senior advisor to the Board of Peace Josh Gruenbaum told Fox News Digital that the success of the last 12 months was largely attributable to President Donald Trump’s leadership and commitment to seeking peace.

TRUMP-BACKED BOARD OF PEACE, ISRAEL ‘WILL TAKE ACTION’ IF HAMAS REMAINS OUT OF COMPLIANCE: NETANYAHU ADVISOR

“The unlock was somebody who came in, who really knew the file because they had the chance to study it and understand it,” Gruenbaum said. Trump and his team, including U.S. special envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff, U.S. special envoy for Peace Jared Kushner and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, “created working relationships with regional actors with trust, overlaid with peace through strength,” while also forcing Hamas to finally understand that “this was either going to end the very hard way for them, or there was an off-ramp and a way to do this in a more dignified way, which is what the 20-point plan was.”

He said this has been achieved by “building consensus through the world, including through Europe, that this is the only game in town. This is the only pragmatic approach to make this thing stop.” A particular point of strength for the Board of Peace, Gruenbaum added, has been “cultivating really strong relationships with the United Nations.”

In November 2025, the United Nations endorsed the Board of Peace through Resolution 2803.

Prior to his meeting with President Trump at the White House, Prime Minister Netanyahu signed up, in the presence of Secretary of State Rubio, as a member of the Board of Peace.(@IsraeliPM)

European Union Commissioner for the Mediterranean and for Demography Dubravka Šuica announced at a high-level briefing at the Board of Peace in September that the European Union had “gathered about $1 billion for early recovery in Gaza,” and would sign recovery projects with the UNDP and UNICEF. “We are doing this in alignment with the priorities of the Board of Peace and the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG),” Šuica stated.

US URGES DONORS TO ABANDON UNRWA FUNDING AS UN DEFENDS AGENCY’S MISSION

The International Stabilization Force, which will train a future police force in Gaza and oversee demilitarization, has received commitments from Kazakhstan, Morocco, Albania and Kosovo, with other countries said to be in the pipeline for admission.

Notably absent from Gaza’s future, per the Board of Peace plan, is the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). The Board of Peace has been unequivocal that UNRWA will have no involvement in Gaza. One U.S. agency, the USAID Office of the Inspector General, is currently investigating over 1,500 UNRWA employees for involvement in terror groups.

On X, the Board of Peace recently stated that it “will only work with trusted partners who deliver for the people of Gaza and contribute to a deradicalized Strip,” and emphasized that “UNRWA fails on those litmus tests.”

The Board of Peace’s effort has support from unlikely corners. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton wrote in a June editorial in the Financial Times that while the plan was “not the one many of us would have drafted,” she believes “it remains the only framework backed by sufficient leverage, political engagement and potential resources to move parties towards implementation.”

The Board of Peace has received about $18 billion in pledges for reconstruction, the BBC recently reported. A Board of Peace official told Fox News Digital that next steps in the reconstruction program include a six-month program with 66 recovery initiatives, including rubble clearance, unexploded ordnance clearance, construction of temporary housing and destroying tunnel infrastructure. The initiatives are expected to cost $2.45 billion, and tenders for some projects have been submitted.

KUSHNER GIVES HAMAS STARK ULTIMATUM: DISARM OR ISRAEL GETS US BACKING TO ‘FINISH THE JOB’

In the year ahead, the Board of Peace must clear a number of hurdles, including a full demilitarization and de-radicalization of Hamas in Gaza. Gruenbaum says that the Board of Peace is “realistic and sober” but is also “in a historic place with Hamas,” having secured verbal agreements and offering a path to amnesty for those who qualify.

Gruenbaum also says that the 20-point plan is Hamas’ best path forward and that regional dynamics leave them with few remaining options. Mediators are increasingly supporting the Board of Peace, Tehran is focused on its current war, and Israel is continuing to apply pressure, though Gruenbaum says the Board of Peace continues to stress that they must comply with the ceasefire.

Hamas terrorists carrying clubs and firearms secure and divert humanitarian aid trucks in the northern Gaza area of Jabaliya on June. 25.(TPS-IL)

Gruenbaum said that deradicalization will never be a top-down process led by the U.S., but will be managed through the NCAG. He said that the NCAG’s members “have kids that have been brought up” under the current UNRWA-run system, so “they understand the situation.” The approach will involve the new technocratic government, whose members have extensive experience in civil service, taking the lead on “vetting teachers” and “vetting people who are involved in civil governance.”

Gruenbaum celebrated the potential of bringing together the NCAG and Israeli authorities through the transformation of Gaza. “This is a monumental opportunity for the Palestinian people of Gaza where their governing body is going to be uniquely focused on delivering services for its constituents and if we could create this amazing relationship where we build trust between Israel and the NCAG, we deliver on both sides of the equation – security for Israel and freedom and a better life, self-determination and prosperity-building inside of Gaza. That’s a two-way trust-building system.”

Gruenbaum added that the successes in Gaza could lead to successes elsewhere. “Maybe these best practices get learned by the Palestinian Authority. Maybe Israel starts adding more trust with different people in the system. I think this is a huge moment in the history of the Middle East.”

New York Attorney General Letitia James has pledged a full and fair investigation into the Cornell 7 gang rape allegations, years after she faced accusations that she ignored warnings of sexual misconduct against her former chief of staff and allowed him to “quietly resign” while allegedly keeping his accuser in the dark.

The claims stemmed from a 2022 lawsuit filed by James’ former deputy press secretary, Sofia Quintanar. A New York judge dismissed the claims against James personally and the Attorney General’s Office in February 2025. The decision was upheld by an appellate court in May 2026.

Those allegations against James have received new attention after New York Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul appointed James as special prosecutor to investigate an alleged gang rape at a fraternity house associated with Cornell University in October 2024.

“Kathy Hochul lost faith in the local DA’s handling of the Cornell sexual assault case. So she picked Letitia James. Did you read Sofia Quintanar’s lawsuit, Governor?” Sam Antar, a fraud investigator based in New York wrote on X.

CORNELL SEXUAL ASSAULT CASE REVIVES SCRUTINY OF A LITTLE-KNOWN NEW YORK LAW ON INTOXICATED VICTIMS

New York Attorney General Letitia James speaks during an announcement on the Standing Up to ICE outreach program at the governor’s office in New York City, Aug. 12, 2026.(REUTERS/David Dee Delgado)

“You’re entitled to question the DA’s handling of Cornell,” Antar continued. “We’re entitled to question James’s handling of her own aide and your choice of James to restore public confidence.”

James is already facing calls to recuse herself from the case after an attorney for one of the defendants pointed to social media posts she made days before her appointment that appeared to take the alleged victim’s side.

“What this young woman has been forced to endure is horrific and unacceptable,” James posted on X on Sept. 28. “I’m holding her in my heart and in my prayers. To her, and to all survivors: you’re not alone. We stand with you.”

Andrew Miltenberg, an attorney representing accused student Gillio Lopes, filed a court petition on Oct. 7 requesting James to be removed from the case. Miltenberg argued that James’ remarks raised concerns about whether she could independently evaluate the evidence and determine whether criminal charges were warranted.

“New York Attorney General Letitia James has always taken these matters seriously and followed the facts and the law,” a spokesperson for James told Fox News Digital.

Former federal prosecutor Neama Rahmani told Fox News Digital that James’ public comments could complicate her investigation.

“It is problematic for a prosecutor like Tish James to be commenting on a case publicly before the investigation is concluded,” Rahmani said.

“And the problem is, if you file criminal charges, whether it’s through a complaint or a grand jury indictment, that may taint the potential jury pool in a criminal case,” he added.

Rahmani acknowledged that James likely did not anticipate being appointed when she made the remarks but said defense attorneys could still raise concerns about her involvement.

Hochul has defended her decision to appoint James.

“I have every confidence in our Attorney General to do what she has always done: look at the facts, examine the record and draw the proper conclusions,” Hochul said during an Oct. 2 news conference. “That’s exactly what’s going to happen in this case.”

James also pledged in an Oct. 1 statement that her office would be “guided by the facts and the law.”

“The Governor has entrusted my office with this investigation, and we do not take that responsibility lightly,” James said.

But others, in addition to Antar, say New Yorkers shouldn’t move on from the previous allegations raised against James by her former employee.

“What about justice for former staffer Sofia Quintanar?” Lattina Brown posted on X. “She spoke out about sexual harassment and NY AG Letitia James had this woman blacklisted in the entire state of NY. The Dems turned their backs on this poor woman. Where is the support for the Hispanic woman?”

The litigation centered on James’ handling of misconduct allegations involving her longtime chief of staff, Ibrahim Khan, whom Quintanar accused of forcibly kissing her at a Brooklyn political fundraiser in November 2021.

In her lawsuit, Quintanar accused James of overlooking warning signs about Khan’s conduct and protecting him from the fallout after the accusations surfaced.

Her lawsuit claimed Khan was allowed to omit his “unlawful conduct” from his resignation statement and accused James of making “misleading statements” to the press about his whereabouts during the investigation. Quintanar also alleged she was not kept updated on the investigation.

The complaint pointed to earlier accusations involving Angel Dubose, a former employee who claimed she was drugged and sexually assaulted at a 2014 holiday party while James served as New York City’s public advocate.

The lawsuit referenced a 2017 New York Post article linking Khan to the alleged assault. However, the newspaper later removed the report after learning that Dubose could not recall who attacked her and had never identified Khan as the perpetrator, The New York Times reported.

James said she referred Dubose’s allegations to law enforcement and other agencies after learning of them in 2017. The Manhattan district attorney’s office and New York City’s Department of Investigation later closed their investigations without filing charges.

James described those allegations as “unsubstantiated” in a December 2022 NY1 interview.

James’ office said it first learned of Quintanar’s allegations against Khan on Oct. 2, 2022, directed him to work remotely the following day and hired an outside law firm to investigate on Oct. 4.

However, the lawsuit was not dismissed entirely. The appellate court allowed a federal civil rights claim against Khan to proceed and revived retaliation claims against Khan and James’ re-election campaign.

The investigation substantiated the allegations against Khan, who resigned in November 2022.

Those claims centered on allegations that Khan blocked Quintanar from obtaining a campaign job after she rejected his sexual advances.

In May 2026, an appellate court upheld the dismissal of Quintanar’s claims against James and the Attorney General’s Office, finding that the lawsuit failed to sufficiently show James knew about Khan’s alleged misconduct.

‘Pharma Bro’ Martin Shkreli has caught the attention of federal and state authorities again

    By Kara Scannell

“Pharma Bro” Martin Shkreli has caught the attention of federal and state authorities again.

Since his 2022 release from prison for securities fraud, Shkreli — who gained national notoriety for inflating the price of a life-saving drug — has been livestreaming on YouTube his stock trades, including several positions involving pharmaceutical companies.

In June, he launched a trading competition with an account boasting a $10 million balance and earlier touted a successful short position he had taken on a biotech company.

The Federal Trade Commission and attorneys general from seven states alleged that through trading and statements on social media platforms, Shkreli has “flagrantly and repeatedly” violated the court order that barred him from participating in the pharmaceutical industry.

On Tuesday, they asked a federal judge to hold Shkreli in contempt, fine him the total profits he made from the trades, and potentially send him to prison if he doesn’t stop.

“In addition to his public trading, Shkreli himself has indicated that he has more accounts and does most of his trading off social media,” authorities wrote. They cited Shkreli saying, “I have some other accounts that I’[d] show you, but, like, I know feds are watching, so f*ck that,’” according to the court filing.

The FTC and seven states — New York, California, Illinois, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia — sued Shkreli in 2020 for anticompetitive behavior for raising the price of Daraprim, a life-saving drug for a toxic parasitic disease, by 4,000% overnight to $750 per pill. The case went to trial, and in January 2022, Shkreli was found liable, ordered to pay $64.6 million and banned from any activity in the pharmaceutical industry.

The civil trial followed his separate criminal case in which Shkreli was found guilty of securities fraud in 2018 and sentenced to seven years in prison. He was released in May 2022.

Almost immediately, the FTC and states allege, Shkreli began violating the court’s ban by setting up a trading competition involving at least 11 pharmaceutical stocks. He also started shorting, or betting the price of biotech company Cassava Sciences would drop. During his livestreams, authorities say, Shkreli argued the company’s clinical study was doomed to fail.

On November 21, 2024, on X, he said, “I don’t think it doesn’t work. It is impossible for it to work.”

Four days later, Cassava publicly said the clinical study failed.

Authorities say Shkreli “gloated” about the success of his short position.

“They don’t want you to know. They want you to stay stupid. I try to give you some advice. Twenty years of experience. I made a lot of money in these binary events, man. Some people say that I’m the GOAT at it, but you didn’t want to hear nothing,” Shkreli said, according to the court filing.

James Talarico has Democrats dreaming big after decades of dashed hopes in Texas

    2026-10-13T16:47:35.688Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/10/13/politics/james-talarico-texas-senate-democrats

    Fort Worth, Texas—

Democrats have been dreaming big in Texas for decades, awash in optimism that this could finally be the year to win a US Senate seat.

For the first time, lifelong Republican Pete Nodecker is joining them, planning to cast his ballot for James Talarico when early voting begins here next week.

“I’m rather disillusioned with the Republican Party,” said Nodecker, 81, a retired restaurant supplier. “The Republican Party has been hijacked. They’re not the Republican Party that I was a member of for all my life.”

EDITOR’S NOTE: Stream the CNN & Jubilee Town Hall with James Talarico live Wednesday, October 14, at 8 p.m. ET with an All Access subscription.

In the final three weeks of the fall campaign, Talarico is seeking to build a coalition of voters to break a 38-year streak of Democrats falling short in their bid for Senate. He’s hoping to tap into the dissatisfaction of voters like Nodecker, who twice voted for Donald Trump, while motivating Democrats to believe in his ability to defeat GOP nominee Ken Paxton.

“I’m a Democrat in Texas, so we’re always a little bit nervous,” said Sue Reed, a member of the Tarrant County Democratic Woman’s Club. “But I would say this has been the most positive vibe and energy that we’ve seen in years.”

The modern ritual of Democratic optimism in Texas dates to at least 2002, when the party put together a “Dream Team” ticket led by former Dallas Mayor Ron Kirk, who ran for Senate.

In 2014, Democratic state Sen. Wendy Davis drew national fanfare as she ran for governor after a high-profile filibuster against abortion restrictions. Four years later, Beto O’Rourke shattered fundraising records and drew massive crowds as he challenged Republican Sen. Ted Cruz.

Through it all, Democrats came up short — and sometimes very short. O’Rourke remains the high-water mark, losing to Cruz by less than 3 percentage points.

This year’s Senate contest has become one of the marquee races in the fight for control of the chamber, a leading example of how Republicans are scrambling to defend deeply red terrain. The seat almost certainly would not have been competitive if Paxton hadn’t defeated Sen. John Cornyn in the May primary runoff.

Talarico, a 37-year-old state representative, was born the year after the last Democratic senator from Texas, Lloyd Bentsen, was reelected in 1988. He has inspired sanguine Democrats and won over some Republicans frustrated by the president and their party.

“He impresses me because he’s willing to take questions from all sides,” said Glen Whitley, a retired Tarrant County judge, who has urged his fellow Republicans to “put country over party” and support Talarico. “I’m ashamed that Ken Paxton is even on the ballot.”

Paxton and his allies in Washington have launched a furious, nine-figure advertising campaign to paint Talarico as too liberal for Texas.

They have especially seized on his past comments about gender and religion, such as his remark during a 2021 legislative debate that “God is nonbinary.” He has since admitted that some of his comments “missed the mark” and has sought to moderate his views on transgender issues.

Paxton has accused Talarico of undergoing a political makeover to hide his true views from Texans.

“California already has two senators. They don’t need a third,” Paxton says in a staple of his stump speech.

Republicans are scrambling to unify their ranks against Talarico. Paxton said in a speech Friday that there are “a lot of apathetic Republicans” right now, suggesting it was due to the Iran war, and Trump has said he is “worried” about the race.

    ‘Trying to remain optimistic’

In one conversation after another, Democratic voters in Texas were upbeat at Talarico’s prospects over Paxton, even as some acknowledged an air of caution that the state’s long pattern of voting GOP could dash Democratic hopes.

“I think what’s different is that James has done such a great job of tapping into what a lot of people are upset about,” said Laura Leeman, a Democratic voter in Fort Worth. “And not just from one party or the other.”

As she attended a Democratic fundraising event at a Fort Worth gallery, Joyce Franklin said she was working to stay positive in the final weeks of a nail-biting campaign.

“I’m trying to remain as optimistic as I can without being totally let down,” Franklin said, recalling the devastation she felt in 2024 when Trump won a second term. “I don’t want to set myself up for that disappointment again, but I think this time we finally have the right formula to move forward.”

The grandson of a pastor and a seminary student himself, Talarico talks far more about faith than most Democrats. As he campaigns, he sprinkles in verses from the Gospel of Luke, along with the argument that love is a stronger motivating force than hate.

“His faith is important to him, and that’s something we don’t always see in Democratic candidates,” said Jill Fox, a Democratic voter from River Oaks. “I think that’s an interesting dynamic that’s attracting some independents and maybe even some crossover Republicans.”

Talarico has a master’s degree in theological studies from the Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary and is training to become an ordained minister.

A former middle school teacher in San Antonio, Talarico entered politics in 2018 when he ran for a Republican-held seat in the northern suburbs of Austin. The 29-year-old’s win made him the youngest member of the Texas Legislature at the time.

He quickly established himself as an advocate for public education and other bread-and-butter issues. However, he found himself competing for more liberal voters after Republican redistricting forced him to seek reelection in 2022 in an Austin-based district.

It was around that period that Talarico began voicing more progressive views on social issues — and offering some of the comments that he now refers to as “cringey.” Republicans are working hard to make sure their voters do not forget those moments.

Marvin Rodak, who owns a coffee roasting and auto repair business in Fort Worth, said he was carefully following the Senate race and remained undecided as the campaign entered the home stretch. He said he was frustrated by the tariff whiplash from the Trump administration and record diesel prices, but also uncertain that he wanted to see Democrats control the Senate.

“The true Democratic Party is fading,” said Rodak, 75, who was raised in a Democratic household and became a Republican as an adult. “Democrats need to distance themselves from socialism.”

He said he was concerned by Paxton’s legal and political baggage, but not sold on Talarico’s ability to do the job without undue influence from Democratic leaders. He said he intended to carefully study both candidates before reaching a decision.

“I think every election is an opportunity to send a message,” Rodak said.

Rodak is the kind of voter who Republicans are intensely targeting in the final weeks of the race, hopeful they will come home once they learn more about Talarico.

From the start of September through Election Day, Republican-aligned groups are planning to spend $232 million — more than they’re set to spend on competitive Senate campaigns in Michigan and Maine combined. The bulk of the outside spending by the GOP has come from Texas PAC, a group affiliated with the Senate Leadership Fund, the top Republican super PAC in Senate races.

“If you care about your children, do not vote for James Talarico,” a woman says in one ad, suggesting Talarico supports gender-affirming surgery for minors.

Talarico voted against a 2023 bill prohibiting gender-affirming care for minors, but he now says he opposes surgeries and opposed the bill because it was too broad. In an ad of his own, he faces the camera directly and says: “No, I don’t support sex-change surgeries for kids.”

In trying to shore up its voters, the GOP has even deployed Paxton’s estranged wife, Angela Paxton, to make the case that Republicans should stick with the entire ticket, even if they have reservations about specific candidates.

In the final weeks of the race, Trump has focused relentlessly on Texas. On each of his last three visits, he has aggressively assailed Talarico, as he tries to rescue Paxton’s candidacy. Vice President JD Vance appeared with Paxton on Tuesday in East Texas, a deep-red region where the candidate needs his base to turn out in large numbers.

“We cannot elect Tala-freako to the US Senate,” Vance said, repeating an insult Trump has repeatedly used against Talarico.

Nodecker, who voted for Trump in 2016 and 2020 but became infuriated by him after his response to the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, said he believes Trump’s frequent trips to Texas could backfire and motivate his critics more than his remaining loyalists.

“If anything,” Nodecker said, “it persuades me to go the opposite direction even more.”

CNN’s Ashley Killough contributed to this report.
