Trump calls off plan to livestream Fort Hood shooter’s execution, says people “would rather not watch him die”

Washington — President Trump said Thursday that the execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan will not be streamed, a decision that comes after his administration faced significant backlash over the Pentagon’s initial plan to allow the American people to watch Hasan’s death by firing squad.

“I think streaming the execution for all to see might have been a strong deterrent for the World to witness how America deals with Terrorists and SCUM like Hasan but, many very good and well meaning people would rather not watch him die, through streaming, or through any other visual device,” Mr. Trump wrote on Truth Social. “He will die, as scheduled, by firing squad, but this event will not be streamed.”

The president said the immediate families of the victims can view the execution in person if they choose to.

“They deserve to witness JUSTICE!” he said.

Hasan, who was convicted of killing 13 people and injuring more than 30 at Fort Hood in 2009, is set to be executed by firing squad at 1 p.m. on Dec. 3 at the Texas Army installation, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said earlier this month.

The plan to allow the public to watch Hasan’s execution was revealed by Hegseth last week in an interview with far-right political activist Jack Posobiec.

“We’ll make sure that people are able to watch it, that it’s public — because people need to understand that there’s serious consequences for these types of things,” he said.

But the plan sparked broad outcry from Republicans and Democrats, who warned that livestreaming Hasan’s death diminished the United States and could fuel radicalization.

House Speaker Mike Johnson told CBS News national correspondent and chief Washington analyst Robert Costa that “the concern would be that you would create a video that would be a recruiting tool for future terrorists.” Vice President JD Vance acknowledged that he would not watch the execution.

CBS News reported Tuesday that Trump administration officials were leaning against streaming the death by firing squad.

If the Trump administration had followed through with its plan, it would have placed the United States in a small group of nations carrying out public executions. Afghanistan and Iran as the only two nations that conducted known public executions last year, according to Amnesty International.

It appears the last public execution in the U.S. took place in 1936. An estimated 20,000 people gathered to watch the hanging of Rainey Bethea, a Black man who confessed to the rape and murder of a 70-year-old White woman, according to the Death Penalty Information Center.

The last military execution took place in 1961, when U.S. Army Private John Bennett was hanged. Hasan’s death by firing squad would be the military’s first using that method since 1945, according to the Death Penalty Information Center.

(CBS News)

James Talarico announces record-breaking $64 million fundraising haul in Texas Senate race

    October 15, 2026 / 10:33 AM EDT / CBS News

    By Caroline Linton

Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico raised a record-breaking $64 million in three months — more than any Senate candidate ever in the third quarter — his campaign announced Thursday.

The campaign said that brings Talarico’s total fundraising to $134 million since he announced his candidacy last year.

His Republican opponent, Attorney General Ken Paxton, said earlier this month that he had raised $18 million in the same period. Talarico broke Jamie Harrison’s record of $57 million, raised during the third quarter in his unsuccessful 2020 Senate campaign in South Carolina.

Although a Democrat hasn’t won a Senate election in Texas since 1988, Democrats there have been powerhouse fundraisers. In 2018, candidate Beto O’Rourke raised a then-record $38 million in the same three-month period.

Recent polls have shown Talarico with a slight lead over Paxton.

Incumbent GOP Sen. John Cornyn, a prolific fundraiser, lost the primary earlier this year to Paxton, who has long struggled as a fundraiser. Republicans have dumped hundreds of millions into the race to support Paxton, even as there have been leaks of audio clips of Paxton appearing to disparage national involvement in the race.

President Trump, who backed Paxton in the primary against Cornyn and is a longtime ally, has traveled to Texas three times in a month to campaign for Paxton.

    blob:https://www.cbsnews.com/1d092062-9b1b-428a-8c3c-4f9e2e3b776c

CNN hosted a town hall with Talarico on Wednesday night, and said Paxton had been invited but declined to respond. CNN and CBS are both owned by Skydance.

At the town hall, Talarico drove home the economic theme of his campaign, telling voters, “We have an affordability crisis because we have a corruption crisis.” He also addressed issues ranging from abortion to his recent absence from the campaign trail, confirming that he had the flu and slamming online conspiracy theories about it.

“That decision to stay home for a week sent my opponent and his conspiracy theorists spiraling. I opened up social media and learned that I had apparently dropped out of the race, flown to a mental health facility in Ohio, that I had died,” Talarico said. “This is crazy. I mean, these false claims got millions of views online.”

Paxton announced Wednesday that his campaign is kicking off a two-week bus tour this weekend near Fort Worth that will wrap up the night before Election Day at the Alamo.

Early voting starts Monday in Texas.

President Donald Trump said Thursday that Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan’s firing squad execution will not be livestreamed, reversing an announcement from the Pentagon last week.

“I think streaming the execution for all to see might have been a strong deterrent for the World to witness how America deals with Terrorists and SCUM like Hasan but, many very good and well meaning people would rather not watch him die, through streaming, or through any other visual device,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“He will die, as scheduled, by firing squad, but this event will not be streamed,” Trump said of Hasan, who was convicted of killing 13 people and wounding dozens of others in the 2009 shooting. Trump added that the immediate families of the victims will be able to watch the execution in person.

CNN reported earlier this week that the president and his advisers were debating whether to call off plans to livestream the execution, with Trump having remarked privately that he did not initially know that Hasan was paralyzed from the waist down.

The president was not aware that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was announcing last week that the administration planned to let the public watch the execution, sources familiar with the discussions said, and was not sure what to make of it at first. Trump was, however, firmly behind the decision to execute Hasan via firing squad, multiple officials told CNN, and he’s often defended it in public.

The plan to livestream the execution immediately faced bipartisan backlash, and people across the Pentagon and the Army were caught off guard, CNN has previously reported.

Public opposition to the idea was also strong — 80% of US adults, including 64% of Republicans, said the execution should not be livestreamed in an ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll released on Thursday.

Hegseth had initially recommended death by firing squad for Hasan, and Trump approved it. The execution, which is scheduled for December 3 at Fort Hood, will be the US Army’s first such execution of a soldier since World War II and its first imposition of any death penalty on an armed service member in 65 years.

Trump formally asserts executive privilege in legal fight over Kennedy Center’s closure

    October 15, 2026 / 11:54 AM EDT / CBS News

Washington — President Trump has formally invoked executive privilege to shield certain records from Democratic Rep. Joyce Beatty of Ohio as part of her ongoing legal challenge to the president’s effort to temporarily shutter the Kennedy Center for renovations.

White House deputy counsel Joshua Hoyt informed a federal judge on Wednesday of Mr. Trump’s formal assertion of the presidential communications privilege, a form of executive privilege. Hoyt said it covers information, documents or communications between Mr. Trump, his advisers and Kennedy Center employees about the president’s duties and “the effective functioning” of the performing arts institution.

Hoyt argued that because the president appoints members of the Kennedy Center’s board and a related Advisory Committee on the Arts, he must “familiarize himself” with the institution’s management, operations, fundraising efforts and planned activities.

“I believe that, without the protection of the presidential communications privilege over the communications described above, presidential advisors and their staff members would be chilled from gathering relevant information, exploring alternatives, and providing fully informed recommendations regarding the performance of the President’s duties,” the White House lawyer wrote in a declaration.

In a separate filing, Justice Department lawyers accused Beatty of conducting a “fishing expedition” that raises separation-of-powers concerns.

“Even though the President’s statutory duties and the Chairman’s trust duties overlap, what matters for the purpose of executive privilege is that Plaintiff seeks information, documents, and communications concerning the President’s actions in his official capacity,” they argued.

Executive privilege is not absolute and can be overcome by an adequate showing of need for the information at issue.

The Kennedy Center’s board of trustees, composed of Trump administration officials and the president’s allies, elected Mr. Trump as its chairman last year, making him the first sitting president to hold the role. His effort to invoke executive privilege to shield records relating to the Kennedy Center raises new and untested questions of whether the protection extends to the president’s actions as chairman of the performing arts institution, which was created by Congress in 1958 and is funded through a mix of federal dollars, ticket revenue and private donations.

The president asserted executive privilege over a number of records relating to his attempt to close the Kennedy Center for two years to allow for renovations, its financial condition, the effort to add Mr. Trump’s name to the building’s facade and the possibility that the Kennedy Center could be demolished.

Concerns that the building could be razed emerged after Mr. Trump said last month that the Kennedy Center will close and “end up being ripped down” if he and his administration did not get recognition for raising money and spearheading repairs to the institution.

Mr. Trump was also photographed on Air Force One looking at a placard that appeared to say “Kennedy Center Demolished.”

The brewing fight over executive privilege comes as part of a lawsuit Beatty filed in December challenging the board’s move to change the center’s name to the Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts and shutter the institution for two years for renovations. Beatty is an ex officio member of the Kennedy Center’s Board of Trustees.

In May, U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper blocked the center’s closure and ordered Mr. Trump’s name to be removed from the building’s facade. Construction crews stripped the president’s name from the exterior in June, but the front portico of the building has since been covered by a tarp, concealing most of its name.

Cooper has also allowed Beatty to collect information from the Kennedy Center about the decision to close the main building and any potential demolition, and to take depositions, a process known as discovery.

But Beatty’s lawyers said that the Justice Department sought to block her inquiries about any input and instructions Kennedy Center staff received from Mr. Trump in his capacity as the board’s chair and refused to turn over any documents related to those communications.

They accused the Justice Department of “improperly asserting a blanket privilege in an unprecedented fashion” and asked Cooper to order the Kennedy Center to turn over the material Beatty is seeking.

In response to Beatty’s inquiries, Justice Department lawyers said late last month that “to the extent the discovery requests seek communications involving the President or White House personnel, they are inappropriate because they may have the effect of seeking information protected by the presidential communications privilege.”

During a deposition with Matthew Floca, executive director and chief operating officer of the Kennedy Center, last week, a Justice Department lawyer repeatedly instructed Floca not to answer certain questions from one of Beatty’s lawyers based on a protective assertion of executive privilege.
