Eric Deters files defamation lawsuit against Kimberly Guilfoyle

    October 15, 2026 / 2:54 PM EDT / CBS News

Eric Deters, the Republican donor who accused Kimberly Guilfoyle of asking him to wire her $100,000 to pay her American Express bill in exchange for her help with the Trump administration ahead of her Senate confirmation hearing, has filed a defamation lawsuit against Guilfoyle and her legal team.

Guilfoyle was pushed out of her ambassadorship to Greece earlier this week, announcing her resignation Tuesday. Guilfoyle’s team publicly disputed the authenticity of text messages Deters shared with multiple news outlets, including CBS News.

Deters filed the lawsuit in Kentucky state court on Thursday.

Deters said Guilfoyle’s legal team issued a statement to the Wall Street Journal claiming Deters owed Guilfoyle money and did not fulfill his obligations. The Journal published part of her attorney’s statement, that Guilfoyle “was owed a balance for traveling to and supporting these patriotic events,” which Deters denies.

“Kim Guilfoyle and her lawyers claimed my allegations were false and they would defend the allegations vigorously,” Deters wrote in a statement accompanying his lawsuit. “Now they can in Kentucky.”

CBS News has reached out to the attorneys named in the lawsuit — Jesse Binnall and David M. Schwartz — for comment.

Justice Department cuts off evidence sharing with Minnesota investigators probing fatal ICE shootings

Federal investigators in Minnesota abruptly stopped sharing evidence last month with state authorities investigating the fatal ICE shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti.

The move — which could hamper the state’s probe of the two killings by ICE agents — is the latest in a series of reversals that have frustrated Minnesota officials, with federal authorities repeatedly cooperating with state and local investigators before suddenly changing course and cutting off cooperation days, or even hours later.

Minnesota investigators said in court filings Tuesday that say the Justice Department still has not turned over key evidence to local authorities, including a statement by one of the officers who shot Pretti, a crucial piece of evidence as the Hennepin County attorney investigates the killing.

State investigators are also now blocked from accessing the cellphone of the agent who fatally shot Good, her clothing, the firearms used to shoot Pretti, the gun Pretti possessed, and other physical evidence from the scene of Pretti’s shooting, such as projectiles and shell casings, according to a sworn statement from Drew Evans, superintendent of Minnesota’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA.)

The state of Minnesota investigators are also seeking evidence in the non-fatal shooting of Venezuelan immigrant Julio Sosa-Celis. The ICE officer, Christian Castro, faces state and federal charges related to the shooting and investigation.

Minnesota investigative authorities are still battling the Justice Department in federal court in Washington, DC, for access to the evidence needed to continue their investigations.

CNN has reached out to the Justice Department and the Minnesota US attorney’s office for comment.

    Inconsistent sharing of evidence

The sudden change in DOJ’s posture came after a three-week period beginning in late June when the US attorney’s office for Minnesota and the BCA, the state’s lead investigative agency, negotiated an agreement to share evidence in the shootings.

According to the court records filed Tuesday, federal law enforcement provided evidence including Good’s vehicle, the gun used to shoot her, body-worn camera footage, officer statements, and other evidence. The Minnesota investigators also shared evidence its agents collected with federal agents.

The following month, Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty, thanked federal prosecutors at a press conference for the evidence sharing. At the time, Moriarty believed all the evidence in both cases had been shared with her office or would be soon.

Within days of the press conference, federal officials in Minnesota stopped cooperating with local authorities — and offered no explanation, the state said in their filings.

According to Tuesday’s filings, Moriarty’s team later discovered key evidence had not been shared.

Moriarty said in a sworn statement that she repeatedly reached out to Daniel Rosen, the US attorney for Minnesota, to resume evidence-sharing. Rosen told Moriarty several times his office was “pausing” cooperation but was “optimistic” that more information could be shared “soon.”

But, on September 10, Rosen informed Moriarty that his office would stop sharing evidence “indefinitely,” citing “challenges with D.C.”

Moriarty said in her statement that she “was left with the understanding” that federal authorities would not share any additional evidence with state and local investigators “unless and until there was a change in policy on that sharing coming out of Washington D.C.”

Moriarty acknowledged a notable distinction in the otherwise normal working relationship between federal and local law enforcement.

“Indeed, in all other matters including complex homicide cases, mass shootings, drug and gun cases, and many other types of cases, collaboration and information sharing with federal officials continues as normal,” Moriarty wrote. “The pause on information sharing is unique to these matters.”

White House prepares plans to use weapon dubbed “mother of all bombs” on Iran, sources say

    October 15, 2026 3:20 PM EDT / CBS News

The White House and Pentagon have prepared plans to use a Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb to hit military sites in Iran if ordered by President Trump, sources familiar with the matter told CBS News.

A Pentagon official told CBS News: “The Department of War plans for a wide range of operational scenarios to execute Presidential and Secretary level direction and to ensure mission success in any operational environment.”

Last week, Mr. Trump said the U.S. would not attack Iran before the midterm elections. He also touted “productive conversations” with Iran, though he did not provide specifics.

CNN first reported Thursday on the plans to use the Massive Ordnance Air Blast Bomb, or MOAB, on Iran.

Mr. Trump set precedent for using the MOAB, also known as the “mother of all bombs” when it was used in 2017 to attack an Islamic State cave complex in Afghanistan. The bomb is the largest U.S. non-nuclear weapon, weighing an upwards of 30,000lbs at a cost of $170,000 per unit.

    2026-10-15T16:47:37.473Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/10/15/politics/trump-unpopular-ideas-republicans-distancing

Trump’s worst political instincts are on full display

    2026-10-15T16:47:37.473Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/10/15/politics/trump-unpopular-ideas-republicans-distancing

It’s clear that many Republicans running for office in the 2026 midterm elections would prefer to keep President Donald Trump at arm’s length.

And Trump keeps reinforcing exactly why.

Not only is he a historically unpopular president heading into the midterms, but he and his team keep doubling down on the terrible political instincts that landed them in this mess.

Trump making puzzling political moves isn’t exactly new. But he’s reserved some of his most overwhelmingly unpopular ideas for late in the 2026 campaign.

It’s almost as if he’s trying to do the most unpopular things possible. And then he keeps citing them at his rallies, sometimes at length.

Two of the most telling examples are a pair of gambits that the administration now appears to have backed off of: using millions of dollars in taxpayer funds to run ads promoting Trump and live streaming the execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan. Trump has since indicated that he would use campaign money to pay for the ads and said Thursday that the live stream will no longer happen.

The latter announcement came just hours after a new Washington Post-ABC News poll Thursday showed registered voters opposed live streaming Hasan’s execution by a stunning margin, 80%-19%.

A Reuters-Ipsos poll last week, meanwhile, showed they said the taxpayer-funded political ads were inappropriate by an 89%-9% margin.

Even in the pantheon of Trump’s many unpopular policies, there are few comparisons to those numbers. About the best analog appears to be pardoning violent January 6 defendants, which another Washington Post poll showed registered voters opposed, 83%-16%.

That anyone thought either of these now-abandoned plans were solid ideas — let alone in October of an election year — says a lot about how the GOP got to where it is right now. Not only is live-streaming Hasan’s death a gruesome idea that even many Republicans cautioned against, it would be a propaganda win for Islamic extremists by turning Hasan into a very public martyr.

But apparently nobody was willing to air doubts to Trump or Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth — or those doubts were too readily dismissed.

Lest you think these are isolated instances, take a look at what Trump was talking about at his rallies on Wednesday.

In Arizona, Trump played up his recently launched Canada trade war and his past proposals to make either Canada or Greenland the 51st US state.

“They are brutal, and we don’t take that crap anymore,” Trump said of Canadian trade policies towards the United States.

“They’ll end up being the 51st state, because it’s the only way it works,” Trump said, later adding: “Just like Greenland.” Then he riffed on Greenland, asserting he never actually intended to invade the territory — despite publicly reserving that option.

It was like a triple-decker sandwich of hugely unpopular initiatives.

Trump’s handling of Greenland? 72% disapproved of that in a February poll.

Making Canada the 51st state? Either 75% or 80% opposed that last year, depending on which poll you prefer.

Trump’s recent tariffs on Canada? Americans opposed that by a nearly 3-to-1 margin, 57%-20%, when Trump launched them.

Even alluding to tariffs right now is political malpractice. Polling from Fox News, AP-NORC and CNN in recent weeks all show about 7 in 10 Americans or registered voters disapproved of Trump on that issue. Each showed his worst numbers to date on the subject.

One could argue it’s better to explain the logic of the tariffs, but there’s a critical difference here from topics like the Iran war: The tariffs are a completely elective idea to pursue and promote with less than three weeks left in the campaign.

In both Arizona and Montana on Wednesday, Trump continued to argue that the economy is doing great. He said “tariffs don’t cause inflation” and claimed the US was getting richer because of both the tariffs and high oil prices.

“Our country is making more money than it’s ever made because of the fact that oil is so high,” Trump said in Bullhead City, Arizona. He added, “I care more about the little person than I care about the big person” but that, in oil-producing states, “we’re making a fortune.”

Trump has been barking up this tree for more than a year — basically telling people there is no inflation and that the economy is in a “golden age.”

And he keeps doing so even though the argument clearly doesn’t convince voters. One could even argue that it’s backfired.

A Pew Research Center poll last month showed 42% of Americans rated the economy “poor,” and 8 in 10 rated it either “fair” or “poor.” Both are new highs for Trump’s second term.

If anything, this happy talk appears to have only made Americans view Trump as out of touch and neglecting their affordability concerns. After all, just this week he’s gotten two straight days of bad inflation indicators, including data released Thursday that shows US wholesale inflation in September jumped to its highest level in more than four years.

It’s all rather stunning. Pundits often look for the secret political calculation in the things Trump does. But increasingly in his second term, there doesn’t seem to be a real political strategy guiding his actions. It’s seemingly all impulse and hubris, largely unchecked by electoral and political concerns.

And he only reverses course after polling comes out confirming that 8 in 10 people think a terrible idea is, in fact, a terrible idea.

White House press secretary Katie Zacharia confirms she never passed bar exam after saying she’s a lawyer

    October 15, 2026 / 3:28 PM EDT / CBS News

Washington— White House press secretary Katie Zacharia said Thursday that she never passed the bar, although she’s called herself a lawyer and President Trump has referred to her as an attorney.

Zacharia made the comment in an interview with conservative commentator Jack Posobiec after the Wall Street Journal reported that she failed the bar exam in California in 2011 and did not pass the bar in any other U.S. state in which she’s lived. Zacharia graduated from Pepperdine University’s law school.

Zacharia told Posobiec she took the bar exam in California but didn’t pass, saying she was distracted by her plans to get married and move to China for her husband’s work around the same time. She said she “didn’t think much” of the results, and said she didn’t need to pass the exam to do her work in China.

Zacharia also said she never described herself as an “attorney at law,” and said there’s a “lot of misinformation around the fact that I labeled myself a lawyer.” She said she consulted with multiple experts.

“I was very careful how I executed this. I never came across as someone who was an attorney at law,” Zacharia said.

Earlier this week, as President Trump was departing for a trip to Alaska, when reporters asked her where she had passed the bar exam, Zacharia responded, “I went to China,” sparking confusion about her law background.

A White House official said Zacharia earned her juris doctor from Pepperdine, which the university confirmed to CBS News. The White House official said Zacharia then moved to China with her husband for his job at an American private equity firm, while she worked on international transaction law.

Zacharia told CBS News in a statement Thursday she “practiced international transaction law, with all the appropriate credentials,” although it’s not clear which credentials she meant. Only Chinese nationals may take the bar exam in China.

On Fox News in April, Zacharia said she “lived in Beijing as a corporate lawyer for three years.”

Zacharia’s Instagram bio also says that she is a lawyer. On Truth Social, Mr. Trump called her “a distinguished Graduate of Pepperdine University, and the Pepperdine Caruso School of Law, an attorney.”

Zacharia’s Instagram bio also says that she is a lawyer. Screenshot of Katie Zacharia’s personal Instagram

But whether it’s true that she can say she’s an attorney or lawyer is being disputed — and it’s a question Zacharia has considered. She told The New York Times that as she was beginning to appear on cable news, she talked with Pepperdine’s president about how she could describe herself. The Times said, “She said she was warned not to use the words ‘attorney” or ‘esquire,’ but that ‘lawyer’ was OK.”

The White House said Zacharia is “uniquely qualified” for the White House press secretary role.

“Katie is a fabulous and wonderful addition to the team,” White House communications director Steven Cheung said in a statement to CBS News. “She is uniquely qualified and whip smart to help inform the American people about all the great things President Trump and his Administration have been doing, and she will do an incredible job as Press Secretary.”

On Wednesday, the Campaign for Accountability, a liberal nonprofit watchdog, filed a complaint with the State Bar of California, questioning whether she had violated California law in referring to herself as a lawyer without having passed the bar. She had been living in California with her family until she became White House press secretary.

The Campaign for Accountability pointed to California Business and Professions Code Section 6126, which says, “Any person advertising or holding himself or herself out as practicing or entitled to practice law or otherwise practicing law who is not an active licensee of the State Bar, or otherwise authorized pursuant to statute or court rule to practice law in this state at the time of doing so, is guilty of a misdemeanor.”

“Ms. Zacharia has represented herself as a lawyer repeatedly to buttress her reputation and credibility as a television legal commentator and now as the White House spokesperson, yet it seems it was all a lie,” Campaign for Accountability executive director Michelle Kuppersmith said in a statement. “In California, calling yourself a lawyer without a license isn’t puffery; it’s a crime. The State Bar should investigate whether Ms. Zacharia has misled the public about her credentials and hold her accountable if she has.”

Cheung blasted the left-leaning ethics group.

“This group that filed the ‘complaint’ is a radical leftist-organization run by rabid numbskulls suffering from a severe case of Trump Derangement Syndrome,” Cheung posted to X. “Nobody takes them seriously because they are deranged low lifes.”

Nora Freeman Engstron, a law professor at Stanford Law School, said the language in California’s law isn’t ambiguous or unclear.

“California law is crystal clear: You can’t hold yourself out as a lawyer unless you’re authorized to practice law,” she told CBS News. “And the law doesn’t just prohibit the unauthorized practice of law. It also prohibits the unauthorized pretense of being a lawyer.”

“California law doesn’t just prohibit people from practicing law without a license,” she added. “It also prohibits them from pretending they’re entitled to practice law. You don’t have to set foot in a courtroom or represent a single client to run afoul of the statute.”

Trump-appointed justice joins Sotomayor in unlikely alliance to rip DOJ’s handling of illegal immigrant case

Unlikely SCOTUS allies questioned why an illegal immigrant was prosecuted twice after being ordered to remain in the US

    October 15, 2026 12:56pm EDT / Fox News

    By Alec Schemmel

Supreme Court justices will begin hearing oral arguments Monday on a wide range of cases this term involving gun rights, religious freedom, immigration detention and the limits of government power.

Conservative Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch has joined forces with liberal Justice Sonia Sotomayor to question the federal government’s prosecution of an illegal immigrant, marking the latest unlikely alliance between the two justices.

Gorsuch, appointed by President Donald Trump, and Sotomayor, appointed by former President Barack Obama, raised concerns about the government’s decision to prosecute a Mexican national twice for being found unlawfully in the United States — even after a federal court prohibited him from leaving the Eastern District of Oklahoma following his first conviction.

The unlikely pairing emerged Tuesday when the Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal from Jesus Herrera-Salazar, who argued that his second prosecution violated the Fifth Amendment’s protection against double jeopardy. Although the justices agreed the Court should not take up the case, Sotomayor issued a separate statement, joined by Gorsuch, warning of serious constitutional problems with the government’s actions.

GORSUCH SAYS IDEOLOGICAL DIVIDES ON SUPREME COURT COME DOWN TO ‘HOW YOU READ LAW,’ NOT POLITICS

Supreme Court Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Neil Gorsuch issued a joint statement this week questioning the federal government’s prosecution of an illegal immigrant, marking the latest in a series of unusual constitutional alliances between the two justices.(Getty Images)

“From the moment he was released from custody after serving his first term of imprisonment, Herrera-Salazar was presented with a Hobson’s choice,” Sotomayor wrote in the statement joined by Gorsuch. “In the Government’s eyes, whether Herrera-Salazar remained in the Eastern District of Oklahoma or left the United States, he would be breaking the law.”

The two justices questioned how the government could punish someone for remaining in the country after effectively prohibiting him from leaving, with the pair’s joint statement describing the situation as a “constitutional absurdity.”

Their agreement is particularly noteworthy given their differing judicial philosophies, but it is not the first time the pair has found common ground over constitutional protections against government action.

In November 2024, Sotomayor and Gorsuch jointly questioned whether homeowners should be compensated when police destroy private property while carrying out law enforcement operations. A few months later, they again joined forces to raise concerns about warrantless misdemeanor arrests. In both cases, as in the latest immigration dispute, the Court declined to hear the appeals, but the justices issued statements highlighting constitutional questions they believed deserved attention.

The pair’s latest expression of joint public concern came after Herrera-Salazar, a Mexican national previously removed from the United States, was indicted in 2020 for being found in the country following deportation, a violation of federal immigration law.

‘UNPRECEDENTED’: JUDGES REVEAL BEHIND-THE-SCENES COORDINATION ON TRUMP IMMIGRATION CASES

He pleaded guilty and served a prison sentence before being placed on supervised release, during which he was expressly prohibited from leaving the Eastern District of Oklahoma without authorization under the terms of his release.

While still under those restrictions, Herrera-Salazar was stopped by police in Heavener, Oklahoma, and subsequently charged again under the same federal immigration statute prohibiting previously deported individuals from being found unlawfully in the United States. A jury subsequently convicted Herrera-Salazar, resulting in another prison sentence and additional supervised release.

The second prosecution prompted Herrera-Salazar to challenge his conviction on double-jeopardy grounds, arguing that the government had effectively punished him twice for the same continuous period of unlawful presence.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit rejected that argument, concluding that the offense is completed when authorities discover a person’s unlawful presence and that a subsequent discovery can support a separate prosecution without requiring another illegal entry.

Sotomayor and Gorsuch questioned that reasoning, pointing to Supreme Court precedent establishing that prosecutors cannot evade double-jeopardy protections simply by dividing one continuous crime into separate periods. Their concern was not whether Herrera-Salazar had violated immigration law in the first place, but whether the government could repeatedly prosecute him for remaining in the United States without evidence of a separate unlawful reentry.

The justices also highlighted that Herrera-Salazar’s supervised-release conditions restricted him from leaving Oklahoma, meaning the government was effectively preventing him from ending the conduct for which it later prosecuted him again. Sotomayor warned that, under the government’s interpretation, prosecutors theoretically could have brought separate charges against Herrera-Salazar for each day he remained imprisoned following his first conviction.

The statement was issued despite the justices’ agreement with the Court’s decision not to review the case. Sotomayor explained that Herrera-Salazar had already been removed from the United States and expressed hope that the unusual circumstances surrounding his prosecution would not arise again.

SUPREME COURT KICKS OFF NEW TERM WITH FRESH QUESTIONS OVER ITS LEGITIMACY AND ITS FUTURE

Rather than dissenting from the Court’s refusal to hear the appeal, Sotomayor and Gorsuch used what is formally known as a statement “respecting the denial of certiorari” to publicly identify constitutional concerns and urge lower courts to avoid similar problems in future cases.

Kavanaugh and Associate Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson.(USA TODAY Network via Reuters Connect)

The unusual collaboration follows two earlier cases in which Sotomayor authored statements joined by Gorsuch after the Supreme Court declined review.

In November 2024, the pair raised concerns in Baker v. City of McKinney, a Texas case involving a homeowner whose property was extensively damaged during a police operation to apprehend an armed fugitive.

Police had used tear gas, explosives and an armored vehicle during the standoff, leaving the home severely damaged. Although the justices acknowledged that officers acted properly to protect public safety, they questioned whether the Constitution permits the government to impose the financial burden of such damage on an individual homeowner without compensation.

Meanwhile, in February 2025, Sotomayor and Gorsuch again joined forces, this time questioning whether the Fourth Amendment permitted police to make warrantless arrests for misdemeanors committed outside an officer’s presence that they did not personally witness.

That case involved a Florida man arrested for loitering and prowling after police responding to a report of suspicious activity encountered him walking through a residential neighborhood before dawn. A subsequent search uncovered stolen mail, leading to a federal criminal charge.

Fox News Digital reached out to the Supreme Court chambers for comment but did not hear back in time for publication.

Justice Department sues California, claiming it’s mailing ballots to more than 20,000 noncitizens

    October 15, 2026 / 3:52 PM EDT / CBS News

Washington— The Justice Department sued California on Thursday, alleging that the federal government has identified more than 20,000 noncitizens who are unlawfully registered to vote.

The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, came after Acting Deputy Attorney General Trent McCotter sent letters to counties earlier this week, including Los Angeles, ordering them to review a list of names of suspected noncitizens who he alleged received mail-in ballots for the upcoming midterm elections.

“State-facilitated voter fraud is unacceptable in the United States of America,” Attorney General Todd Blanche said in a statement announcing the lawsuit.

“If found responsible in a court of law, the State of California will have seriously undermined confidence in our electoral system and violated laws that protect our nation’s representative system of government.”

In the letter that McCotter sent to the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk, he enclosed a password-protected thumb drive that he said contained names compiled by the Department of Homeland Security, and imposed a 48-hour deadline for the clerk’s office to review the list.

Dean Logan, the registrar-recorder and clerk, said in a statement responding to McCotter’s demands that the county would not be reviewing the materials on the thumb drive because doing so would conflict with “established data privacy and information security protocols.” He said the device was not considered a “secure medium.”

Secretary of State Shirley Weber, meanwhile, said the Justice Department had not provided the list of names and blasted the Trump administration for what it said were “unsubstantiated claims” that California had 190,000 noncitizens on its voter rolls.

In Thursday’s lawsuit, the Justice Department accused the state of failing to work with the federal government to correct the alleged problems with its voter rolls.

“The Federal Government asked California to work collaboratively to identify any noncitizens registered to vote in the State. California made no serious effort to do so,” the lawsuit said.

“The United States thus seeks commonplace election relief when a ballot is called into question. This Court should enjoin California from presently tabulating vote-by-mail ballots from likely noncitizens in the upcoming federal election until the voter’s citizenship status can be determined,” it added.

CBS News has reached out to the secretary of state and the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk for comment.

The Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division has filed 31 lawsuits in an effort to force states to hand over unredacted copies of their voter rolls. The division has said it wants to ensure states are keeping clean voter lists, but it has since acknowledged that it also intends to share the data with the Department of Homeland Security so that the lists can be screened for noncitizens.

Harmeet Dhillon, the assistant attorney general for the Civil Rights Division, sent letters to all 50 states in July threatening to take criminal action if they knowingly allowed noncitizens to remain on their voter rolls.

So far, the Justice Department has lost 26 of those cases, and has not achieved one legal victory to date.

It has resorted to using publicly available voter lists and other investigative means to try to identify noncitizens who may be registered in those states.

Trump rules out livestream for Nidal Hasan firing squad execution

    October 15, 2026 10:22am EDT / Fox News

Trump reversed an earlier Pentagon announcement that the public would be able to watch the execution

VP Vance casts doubt on live-streaming the execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan

Fox News chief national security correspondent Jennifer Griffin looks at the history of the firing squad being used in the United States and debates over the plan to stream Nidal Hasan’s execution on ‘Special Report.’

President Donald Trump announced that the planned firing squad execution of convicted Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan will not be livestreamed, reversing an earlier Pentagon announcement that the public would be able to watch the convicted mass killer’s final moments.

Trump said in a Truth Social post that broadcasting the execution could serve as a powerful deterrent to terrorism but acknowledged that many Americans would rather not witness Hasan’s death.

“He will die, as scheduled, by firing squad, but this event will not be streamed,” Trump wrote.

Hasan’s execution is scheduled for Dec. 3. Trump said immediate family members of the 13 people killed in Hasan’s 2009 rampage will be permitted to attend in person if they choose.

“They deserve to witness JUSTICE!” Trump wrote.

The president’s announcement comes after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Wednesday that the execution would be made public, telling Real America’s Voice that Americans would be able to watch Hasan’s death.

“We’ll make sure that people are able to watch it, that it’s public,” Hegseth said at the time.

Pentagon officials subsequently confirmed Thursday that the execution would be livestreamed, though additional details had not yet been released.

Trump suggested in his Truth Social post that broadcasting the execution could have sent a message to would-be terrorists.

“I think streaming the execution for all to see might have been a strong deterrent for the World to witness how America deals with Terrorists and SCUM like Hasan,” Trump wrote.

The president added that “many very good and well meaning people would rather not watch him die, through streaming, or through any other visual device.”

Hasan, a former Army major and psychiatrist, was convicted of killing 13 people and wounding 32 others during a shooting rampage at Fort Hood, Texas, on Nov. 5, 2009.

During his 2013 military trial, Hasan acknowledged carrying out the shooting and represented himself after dismissing his attorneys. He was sentenced to death.

The execution would mark the first military execution in more than 65 years. The last U.S. military execution took place in April 1961, when Army Pvt. John Bennett was hanged.

However, Hasan could still seek to delay his execution through a habeas corpus petition in civilian court, a legal challenge that experts say could significantly postpone the proceedings.

Trump also used his Truth Social post to criticize the Obama administration’s handling of intelligence involving Hasan, pointing to electronic communications between the former Army officer and radical cleric Anwar al-Awlaki that were intercepted by the FBI before the attack.

The president claimed that investigators’ failure to identify the communications as a threat amounted to a major intelligence failure.

Trump announces Montana ‘super range’ at midterm rally for Pentagon to test advanced war technology

Range would support testing of autonomous weapons, electronic warfare, and hypersonic systems in Kalispell

    2026-10-15 8:07am EDT / Fox News

A new military “super range” is coming to Montana to test advanced weapons and technology, including autonomous systems, space and electronic warfare, and supersonic and hypersonic systems, President Donald Trump announced Wednesday.

President Donald Trump delivered “a little breaking news” to supporters at a midterm campaign rally in Montana on Wednesday, announcing that the Pentagon would establish a new military “super range” in the state to test cutting-edge weapons and warfare technology.

The president said the range would support testing of potential autonomous weapons, space and electronic warfare technology, and supersonic and hypersonic systems, positioning Montana to play a greater role in the development of America’s next-generation military capabilities.

“I’m pleased to inform you and announce that right here in Montana, the Department of War is going to establish a new super range for testing advanced weapons and technologies,” Trump told supporters gathered at Majestic Valley Arena in Kalispell.

Trump suggested the project had been highly sought after elsewhere in the country.

“The rest of our country maybe won’t be thrilled because a lot of other people wanted it also,” Trump said.

The president also credited persistent lobbying from Montana’s Republican lawmakers, joking that Sen. Tim Sheehy had repeatedly pressed him to bring the project to the state.

“You’re getting it, everybody, will you please leave me alone?” Trump quipped. “Leave me alone, Tim. Tim Sheehy would drive me crazy.”

The announcement places Montana at the center of a proposed military testing initiative involving some of the Pentagon’s most sophisticated emerging technologies.

Hypersonic weapons, which can travel at least five times the speed of sound, are among the advanced military capabilities under development by the Pentagon, according to the Government Accountability Office. The War Department has also identified autonomous systems and electronic warfare capabilities as areas of strategic importance.
