Ontario premier wants Republicans to lose House and Senate over Trump’s trade war

    September 11, 2026 5:45am EDT / Fox News

Ontario Premier Doug Ford urged US voters to hold President Donald Trump accountable for the ongoing trade war with Canada

    By Landon Mion Fox News

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said on Thursday that he hopes Republicans in the U.S. lose both the House and Senate in the upcoming midterm elections, suggesting that voters should punish President Donald Trump for his moves to escalate the ongoing trade war with Canada.

“Hopefully, he’s going to lose the Senate. He’s going to lose Congress. I hope so, and hold him accountable,” Ford said.

“But we’ll see how that goes. We aren’t going to interfere in the U.S. election,” he continued.

Ford has become one of Trump’s most outspoken critics in Canada, accusing the president of attempting to move Ontario’s businesses and jobs across the border to the U.S.

“He’s not reliable at all,” Ford said. “He could make a deal today and then change his mind. And we’ve seen that over and over again.”

Ford said he still believes Trump would like to reach a deal before the midterms and that Canada should return to the negotiation table as soon as possible.

“I truly believe President Trump wants a deal before the midterms,” Ford said. “I could be wrong, but I think it’s best that we sit down and get a deal.”

Ford’s comments come just days after the U.S. escalated the trade dispute by banning some Canadian dairy products and motorcycles as well most alcoholic beverages after Canada’s retaliatory tariffs took effect on about $20 billion in U.S. goods.

Trump also took efforts to remove Canadian products from large, long-term U.S. government contracts.

Last year, Trump abruptly ended trade talks with Canada after the Ontario government broadcast an anti-tariff TV ad in the U.S., using quotes from former Republican President Ronald Reagan’s criticism of tariffs.

Trump and Ford have repeatedly exchanged personal jabs over the trade war.

Ford mocked Trump for keeping a portrait of Reagan near his desk while pushing for tariffs the former president had opposed, telling The Associated Press that Reagan would be “throwing up on him from the picture if he knew what was going on.”

Trump, meanwhile, has criticized Ford as “the less charismatic, intelligent, and overall unimpressive brother of the late, great, Rob Ford.”

The U.S. president further escalated tensions with Canada when he signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America,” a rebranding that Canada does not recognize.

Canada, other international bodies and U.S. states are not forced to follow the renaming, but the order adds to the ongoing tensions between the two countries.

Ford said on Thursday that Trump had unintentionally strengthened Canada by forcing it to cut its dependence on the U.S.

“The only two good things Donald Trump has ever done for Canada” were that “he woke us up” and “he united the country like I’ve never seen before,” Ford said.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney suggested on Thursday that his country may hold off on further retaliation against Trump’s latest trade measures, describing them as “relatively modest” compared to earlier U.S. moves.

He said his government was still studying the U.S. measures and acknowledged they could have significant consequences for companies and industries, but he said that some of the new U.S. tariffs replaced others that the Trump administration had removed.

“We also recognize that, in the context of other things that the U.S. administration has done … that these are relatively modest measures,” Carney said at a cabinet retreat in Banff, Alberta.

    • “MAGA Inc.”

Trump and Musk super PACs unleash millions to boost Republicans in battleground races

    2026-09-11T10:02:43.591Z / Reuters

    Summary

    • No Going Back reserves more than $24.9 million in ad time across six battleground states, AdImpact says
    • MAGA Inc. puts $10 million into Texas Senate race while Musk group adds $2.4 million
    • New Trump-affiliated PAC registered only on September 1

NEW YORK, Sept 11 (Reuters) – The two biggest Republican money players in the 2026 midterm elections – U.S. President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk – have finally turned on the spigot with less than eight weeks to go before Election Day.

With Republicans facing the prospect ‌of losing control of at least one chamber of Congress, and polling showing Democrats more motivated to vote, a group connected to Trump has begun spending tens of millions of dollars to reserve blocks of TV ad time in close races.

Trump, whose approval rating is stuck at the lowest level of his political career, told reporters last week that he planned to allocate $400 million to $500 million to boost Republicans in the midterms.

The Trump-affiliated Republican political action committee No Going Back has locked in more than $24.9 million in ad time across six battleground states: Alaska, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, New Hampshire and Ohio, according to political ad research firm AdImpact.

Additionally, Musk’s America PAC and Trump’s main fundraising arm MAGA Inc. have in recent days poured $2.4 million and $10 million respectively into the race for a U.S. Senate seat in Texas where state Attorney General Ken Paxton risks becoming the first Republican to lose to a Democrat in a state-wide election there in decades.

About $6.9 million of that money is being spent on attack ads against Democratic state lawmaker James Talarico who leads Paxton by 2.1 percentage points in an average of polls compiled by Nate Silver’s Silver Bulletin.

“Republicans now must spend real money defending an expanded map,” said Republican strategist Brad Dayspring of Purple Strategies in Alexandria, Virginia. “When you suddenly have to put millions into Texas, having President Trump and Musk open their wallets gives Republicans the ability to shore up vulnerable races without draining resources from the rest of the map.”

Musk’s America PAC expects to play a major role in Republican voter turnout efforts in key states, with spending on door knockers, digital advertising and direct-mail campaigns ahead of the November 3 election. He’s already spent more than $7 million on digital advertising, text messages, voter calls, mailers and other printed materials, federal filings show. A spokesman for the PAC declined to comment.

    NEW FUNDRAISING ARM

Trump’s midterm war chest is supporting the new No Going Back super PAC, according to one ‌person familiar with the matter who asked not to be identified. It is unclear how much of Trump’s war chest will be allocated through this new group.

Though Trump’s MAGA Inc. and No Going Back aren’t yet formally affiliated with each other, they share the same treasurer – Charles Gantt – phone number and address at the same firm in Massachusetts. Gantt, MAGA Inc. and No Going Back didn’t return requests for comment.

The New York Times reported that No Going Back spent $49 million reserving advertising on Tuesday and Wednesday alone.

It is not clear why the new PAC, which registered with the Federal Election Commission on September 1, was established but Republican strategist Ron Bonjean said it helps distance Trump and his MAGA movement from campaign donations as voters sour on the president.

Any advertising from the new PAC will be credited to No Going Back PAC instead of MAGA Inc., a name closely tied to Trump’s political brand.

“It’s a brilliant strategy because it takes MAGA out of the name. It takes any affiliation to Trump out of the name. It has an innocuous name that no one will care about as opposed to MAGA Inc., which could turn off independent voters right away,” said Bonjean, a partner at bipartisan public affairs firm Rokk Solutions in Washington.

The new PAC has used some of the same vendors as MAGA Inc. to carry out its work and in August some officials from MAGA Inc. started telegraphing to Republicans their intention to create a new PAC, according to the person familiar with the operation.

The timing of No Going Back’s registration will delay full disclosure of its donors until late October, according to FEC rules.

Trump capped the first day of his Republican Party’s first-ever midterm convention in Dallas on Wednesday by proposing to pay every U.S. adult a $5,000 “Trump dividend” if the party wins the congressional elections. It was not immediately clear how the $5,000 payments would work or whether they would be legal.

Ceremonies at the 9/11 Memorial in New York, the Pentagon and the Flight 93 National Memorial in Pennsylvania will take place Friday as the nation marks the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, when 19 al Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial airliners and attacked the United States.

Officials and others with memories of that day reflected on what they witnessed and what they lost in some cases as the nation mourns anew.

Retired Maj. Gen. Bert Mizusawa, who served in senior Army positions at the Pentagon before 9/11, worked as a senior Pentagon official in the time leading up to 9/11 and knew several colleagues who perished that day.

On that Tuesday, Mizusawa said he was watching coverage of the attack on the Twin Towers from his office when reporters broke in to say the Pentagon had been targeted.

“I looked out my window and was able to observe the plume of smoke rising from the attack on the Pentagon,” Mizusawa said. “My normal commute took me directly past the section that was destroyed, and the smoke lingered for days.”

Mizusawa, the GOP nominee for Senate against Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., said he also played a role in hiring Army Lt. Gen. Timothy Maude, the highest-ranking military officer killed in the Pentagon attack.

He added he just recently met with the lone survivor of the Pentagon’s staff section that took a direct hit from American Airlines Flight 77 that day.

“I reflected that, as tragic as the attack on the Pentagon was, the low-rise multi-ringed structure saved many lives as it was the virtual opposite form of structure compared to the World Trade Center buildings,” he said.

Warner similarly recalled watching the attacks unfold and seeing smoke rise from the Pentagon that day.

“I vividly remember the September 11 attacks, and I watched the smoke rise above the Pentagon…,” he said. “On the 25th anniversary of these tragic attacks, we remember the lives lost at the Pentagon, in Pennsylvania, and in New York City, and our brave first responders whose heroic actions saved countless lives.”

Also in Virginia, President Donald Trump is expected to attend the Pentagon’s ceremony. Trump has attended 9/11 observances at each of the three attack sites in different years.

In New York, Gov. Kathy Hochul and Mayor Zohran Mamdani are expected to attend the solemn ceremony and reading-of-names at the World Trade Center site.

Hochul’s opponent, Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, told Fox News Digital that that day changed his home state and his family forever.

“The pain has never completely gone away,” Blakeman said. “My nephew Tommy was murdered while he was giving first aid to a severely burned woman. I lost many colleagues and friends on that day. We must never forget the danger facing our country from those with anti-American values.”

Tommy, a New York State Courts officer, was reportedly rendering aid to a victim when Tower Two collapsed on him.

“The terrorist attacks on September 11 forever reshaped our city and state, and every year on the anniversary, New Yorkers feel the weight of unimaginable tragedy and honor the lives lost,” Hochul said, reflecting on the day.

“In the aftermath of 9/11, New Yorkers showed the world what courage, sacrifice and bravery looked like,” she added.

Fox News Digital also reached out to Mamdani for comment.

Additional Trump administration officials will attend the third ceremony in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. Last year, Veterans Affairs Secretary Douglas Collins represented the administration there.

The memorial is managed by the Department of the Interior, which said it will hold a reading of the names at 10:03 a.m. ET, the time United Flight 93 crashed into a field near U.S. Route 30 after passengers fought back against the hijackers.

Fox News Digital reached out to Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Pennsylvania State Treasurer Stacy Garrity — Shapiro’s GOP opponent this fall — for information on their plans for the day and comment on the 25th anniversary remembrance.

Garrity will be in attendance at the Flight 93 Memorial in her official capacity as Pennsylvania State Treasurer, her campaign said.

Speaking as the GOP’s gubernatorial nominee, Garrity told Fox News Digital she recalls September 11, 2001, as a bright September morning in the commonwealth that she and others thought would be a run-of-the-mill weekday.

“But in the blink of an eye, in the skies over Lower Manhattan, along the shores of the Potomac, and in the fields of western Pennsylvania, our world was forever changed,” Garrity said.

“Twenty-five years later, may God bless the heroes of Flight 93, the first responders to the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, and every American who answered the call to serve that day and in the years to follow: Let’s roll,” Garrity added, quoting Flight 93 victim Todd Beamer of Cranbury, N.J., who was recorded calling out that phrase as he led an unsuccessful effort to retake control of the plane from the terrorists.

Americans to mark 25 years since September 11 attacks amid enduring grief, reflection

    2026-09-11T10:04:40.797Z / Reuters

NEW YORK, Sept 11 (Reuters) – Twenty-five years after the deadliest attack on U.S. soil, Americans will pause on Friday to commemorate the nearly 3,000 people killed when hijacked planes slammed into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania — and to wrestle with the legacy of September 11.

The attacks ‌shaped generations of Americans who lived through the day or grew up in its aftermath, influencing U.S. foreign policy, domestic politics and public attitudes toward security.

But for many whom the attacks directly affected — the victims’ families, first responders and rescue workers — the anniversary is a tribute to the lives lost on a clear blue day a quarter century ago and the heartbreak that followed.

Caroline Ogonowski’s father, John, was the captain of American Airlines Flight 11, which flew into the North Tower of the World Trade Center 47 minutes after taking off from Boston, killing everyone aboard.

Ogonowski, now 39, had her first baby this year and named him John, after her father. She took him to visit her father’s grave last week and will attend a memorial ceremony in Boston on Friday.

“This year, there’s this new sadness in knowing that they won’t ever get to know each other,” Ogonowski, who has worked in disaster relief and humanitarian assistance, said in a phone interview. “My father will never know his grandson. And my son will never know his grandfather.

“We owe it to my father and all the others that we lost on that day to make sure that we continue to teach future generations about what happened, about who these people were, who these heroes were, how our country came together and became stronger because of it,” she added.

In New York, Vice President JD Vance and all four living former presidents, including President George W. Bush, who was in office at the time of the attacks, will join Mayor Zohran Mamdani alongside victims’ relatives at the September 11 memorial in downtown Manhattan.

The ceremony is scheduled to include moments of silence to mark when the two planes hijacked by al Qaeda militants struck the World Trade Center towers, as well as when each tower collapsed. Family members will read aloud the names of all 2,977 victims in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania, as well as those of the six killed in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

President Donald Trump will commemorate the occasion at the Pentagon. Mourners will also hold a ceremony in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, at the crash ‌site where passengers brought down a fourth hijacked jetliner that had been headed for Washington.

    GENERATIONAL PAIN

A generation of Americans has grown up since 2001 who are too young to remember the attacks but whose lives were fundamentally altered by them.

The attacks initiated the “war on terror,” which led to the creation of the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq that lasted years. The resulting public backlash helped fuel Trump’s rise a decade ago, when he vowed not to start new foreign entanglements — a promise being tested by the current Iran war.

At home, Americans expressed deep solidarity and patriotism, as well as sorrow, in the immediate wake of the attacks.

At the same time, however, Muslim Americans and immigrants from Muslim-majority countries faced a rise in prejudice and hate crimes. Public polls have found 9/11 colors Americans’ perceptions of Muslims to this day. Mamdani, New York’s first Muslim mayor, has faced calls from some Republicans to skip Friday’s ceremony, which he has rejected.

Casualties were not limited to those who perished on September 11. Many rescue workers who spent weeks or months at the site afterward, as well as nearby residents and others, were sickened by toxins in the air and eventually died.

Patrick Whalen’s father, also named Patrick, was a New York City firefighter who responded to the attacks and continued working at Ground Zero for months amid the dust and rubble. In 2020, he was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma, a rare cancer linked to exposure to toxic carcinogens, and died on August 22, 2021.

“The government told him it was safe to breathe, and, obviously, it was not true,” the younger Whalen said after a New York City Fire Department memorial service this week.

Information that the air at Ground Zero was safe to breathe came from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Its former administrator, Christine Todd Whitman, apologized in a 2016 interview with The Guardian, saying the agency did its best with the knowledge it had.

The New York City Fire Department lost 343 members on September 11. More than 600 additional firefighters, including some retired members who took part in the rescue effort, have died of 9/11-related illnesses since then, department figures show.

Twenty-six have died this year alone.

    2026-09-11T06:00:00-0400 / https://www.cbsnews.com/news/khalid-sheikh-mohammed-911-plotters-trial/

Where the case against the alleged 9/11 plotters stands 25 years after the attack

    2026-09-11T06:00:00-0400 / https://www.cbsnews.com/news/khalid-sheikh-mohammed-911-plotters-trial/

Twenty-five years after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people, the alleged plotters still have not faced a trial.

After rejecting prosecutors’ request to begin the trial in January 2027, a military judge at Guantánamo Bay has ordered jury selection for the trial of four alleged 9/11 plotters — including Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, accused principal architect of the attacks — to begin on June 5, 2028.

“There’s significant frustration,” Gordon Felt, president of Families of Flight 93, told CBS News. Felt is the brother of Flight 93 passenger Edward Felt and leads efforts to share his story and that of all 40 passengers and crew members who fought back against hijackers. “We’ve yet to see justice or accountability. The trials are still in a pre-trial phase at Guantanamo … that’s been dragging on endlessly.”

The latest date presents a painful question for the families of the victims: After so many missed deadlines and prolonged pre-trial proceedings, will this case move forward as planned?

    The four on trial

Four defendants are currently slated to stand trial together: Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, Walid bin Attash, Ammar al-Baluchi, also known as Ali Abdul Aziz Ali, and Mustafa al-Hawsawi. The men are facing the death penalty, with prosecutors seeking charges that include conspiracy, murder in violation of the law of war, terrorism and hijacking.

After a military judge determined he was mentally unfit to stand trial, a fifth defendant, Ramzi bin al-Shibh, is no longer part of the case.

Prosecutors allege Mohammed, commonly referred to as KSM, developed and directed the plot to hijack commercial aircraft, weaponizing them and directing them toward the World Trade Center and Pentagon. Mohammed was captured in Pakistan in 2003 and held in secret CIA custody for years before being transferred to Guantánamo in 2006. While KSM’s own statements represent key pieces of the U.S. government’s case against him, they have also been one of the biggest obstacles in bringing the case to trial.

    War criminals on the stand

Michael Lebowitz offers a rare perspective. The former Justice Department national security attorney and combat veteran spent roughly a decade working on the 9/11 case as a Guantánamo prosecutor, also contributing to cases involving the USS Cole bombing and senior al Qaeda figures. The former senior legal adviser to the U.S. Army Cyber Command gave this blunt assessment: The 9/11 case became extraordinarily complicated after the United States chose an extraordinary way to prosecute it.

Rather than treating the alleged al Qaeda operatives as traditional criminal defendants in the federal court system, the Bush administration developed military commissions to prosecute terrorism suspects for alleged war crimes.

“The government completely switched from the law enforcement toolkit into the military option,” Lebowitz explained, adding that Congress and the Supreme Court “tinkered with the system” to create a hybrid one that saw “judges cycling in and out, plus personnel are cycling in and out.”

The current judge for the 9/11 case, Air Force Lt. Col. Michael Schrama, is the fifth judge to oversee the case since the defendants were arraigned in 2012.

Lebowitz recalls the 9/11 arraignment lasted 13 hours and said it was the “longest arraignment in American history.”

Why the plan to try KSM in Manhattan was abandoned

In 2009, Attorney General Eric Holder announced that Mohammed and four co-defendants would be prosecuted in federal court in Manhattan, with the Obama administration arguing that federal courts were equipped to handle major terrorism cases and could provide a fair trial.

That plan collapsed after another Guantánamo detainee, Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani, was prosecuted for his role in the 1998 U.S. embassy bombings in East Africa. His acquittals on most charges evolved into a political flashpoint in the ongoing debate over whether terrorism defendants should be tried in federal court. He was sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of conspiracy on one charge, but not on over 280 conspiracy and murder charges.

Congress subsequently restricted the government’s ability to transfer Guantánamo detainees to the United States for trial, and the 9/11 terrorism case returned to the military-commission system at Guantánamo.

    Guantánamo: A “traveling circus”

While a federal courthouse in Manhattan operates every day, Guantánamo keeps a much different schedule. Lebowitz says military-commission litigation was commonly referred to by all parties as a “traveling circus.”

“In order to conduct a hearing at Guantánamo Bay, the entire court system has to go to Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, D.C., and load up onto a chartered flight,” Lebowitz said. “And I’m talking about judges, prosecutors, defense lawyers, witnesses, court staff, victim family members — we all go on the same flight and we fly to Guantánamo Bay to conduct a hearing.”

That means a hearing is not simply a matter of walking into a courthouse and putting a case on the docket.

As personnel rotate in and out of Guantánamo, logistical hurdles mount.

“Every six months to a year, we had to litigate again very mundane, basic things such as how detainees can get bail and when they meet their lawyers,” he added.

    Litigating torture

Before KSM ever set foot in Guantánamo, the alleged war criminal spent years in secret CIA detention, subjected to an interrogation program that included waterboarding and coercive treatment that later became central to the legal battle over whether statements he made later before U.S. investigators could be used against him.

Prosecutors have routinely advocated to use evidence gathered following the CIA’s program, but the defense argues that those later statements cannot simply be separated from years of coercive detention.

The debate has generated years of hearings over classified information, discovery and the circumstances surrounding all of the defendants’ detention conditions and ongoing interrogation as judges navigate the line between the defendants’ rights and the government’s obligation to protect classified national security information.

A 2024 plea agreement that would have spared Mohammed and two co-defendants the possibility of execution was ultimately abandoned, sending the case back toward trial.

The defense argued that the statements were still tainted by the coercion KSM had experienced in CIA custody.

In August, a military judge ruled that the government had not established that statements KSM made to the FBI in 2007 — after his CIA detention — were voluntary and ruled to exclude them.

“I’ve gone every shred of evidence in the 9/11 case, both classified and unclassified, and I feel very confident that there is enough evidence to convict KSM and the other 9/11 conspirators without those confessions,” Lebowitz said.

Still, the former prosecutor conceded, “It makes the job a little harder to connect the dots of the evidence without the confessions.”

The prosecution will instead have to rely on other evidence, including documentary and communications evidence that link the defendants to the plot. While prosecutors could have fought the ruling and tried to get KSM’s FBI statements back into evidence, they decided not to appeal, in part because another appellate battle could jeopardize the June 2028 trial date.

Felt supports that decision: “I think that was a good choice because I think [an appeal] would have pushed things back significantly.” He added, “I believe they’ve got enough evidence to get a conviction without the confession that was under question.”

Will 2028 finally see a trial?

While the judge has ordered jury selection and the trial to begin June 5, 2028, the date is not guaranteed.

The set schedule depends on parties meeting deadlines and milestones.

Lebowitz said that the most painful measure of how long this case has taken is the response from many 9/11 family members.

“A lot of them were elderly, and a lot of them were just hoping they can live long enough to see a court of law officially determine that KSM and his conspirators (are) guilty,” he said.

Felt expressed some doubt that the trial would proceed as scheduled. “They’ve set dates before,” he remarked. “There’s — I believe — 90 rulings that have to be made by the judge before we can proceed, so I’ll believe it when I see it.”

After 25 years, the goal is no longer to find a date on the calendar, but to move the case into the courtroom and reach a verdict.

“No matter what happens, Ed is gone. He’s been taken, stolen from his family. But for me, justice is a process of presenting the facts to the court,” Felt said, adding that he supports prosecutors seeking the death penalty.

Citing the 2,977 people killed on 9/11 and the hundreds of others who died afterward as a result of the attack, Felt added, “We’ve lost far more people since that day —not only from cancers and respiratory illnesses that were contracted at the recovery sites and all three sites here in Somerset, in New York, and at the Pentagon, but all the military losses we’ve incurred over the years. Absolutely, if their guilt can be proven, we need to see the death penalty.”
