Army Secretary Dan Driscoll has submitted his resignation to President Donald Trump, multiple sources familiar with the matter told CNN.

One source said the decision was unsurprising given tension between Driscoll and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.

An Army official said Driscoll “spoke to the president about the current state of the Army and submitted his resignation.”

“Secretary Driscoll has been highly effective in advancing President Trump’s agenda to Make America Strong Again at the Department of the Army by providing outstanding leadership during historic military operations, restoring an emphasis on readiness and lethality, assisting with negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, and more,” White House spokesperson Anna Kelly said in a statement.

CNN has reached out to the Army for additional comment. The Wall Street Journal first reported on Driscoll’s departure.

The departure of Driscoll, an Army veteran and longtime friend of Vice President JD Vance, comes after months of friction with Hegseth. It also comes six months into the Iran war, which shows no signs of ending.

Earlier this year, Hegseth fired the Army chief of staff, Gen. Randy George, and two other generals. George and Driscoll worked closely together.

Nearly from the beginning of Hegseth’s tenure, multiple sources previously told CNN, the secretary has been distrustful of officials around him — civilian and military alike — and suspicious about their loyalties.

One of the most prominent examples of infighting throughout Hegseth’s tenure has been with Driscoll, often due to the close relationship Driscoll and Vance. CNN has reported that Hegseth has viewed Driscoll’s relationship with the White House as an effort to go around him.

Driscoll and Vance were classmates at Yale Law School and have remained close friends. The young Army secretary also formed his own relationship with Trump, which was apparent when he was tapped by the president last year to help persuade Ukraine to return to the negotiating table for talks with Russia.

Washington— The Supreme Court on Monday continued to allow construction of the new White House ballroom, clearing the way for the massive new structure that President Trump has championed.

In a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court halted lower court rulings that would have temporarily blocked the construction of a new 90,000-square-foot ballroom where the East Wing once stood.

The high court said in an unsigned opinion that the National Trust for Historic Preservation, which filed a lawsuit to block the project, did not have the legal right to sue. It did not address the legality of Mr. Trump’s East Wing project.

Chief Justice John Roberts joined with the three liberal justices in dissent.

Roberts had temporarily allowed work on the ballroom to continue earlier this month, giving the Supreme Court more time to weigh the Trump administration’s bid for emergency relief.

In its unsigned opinion, the court ruled that lower court judges “likely exceeded” their authority by blocking the ballroom. The majority pointed to sworn declarations from top administration officials, including the director of National Intelligence and heads of the Secret Service, Army and the State Department, who said the ballroom was necessary and had warned that any significant pause in construction would harm the government because of the national security facilities being built underground.

“Today, we do not pass upon the legality of the government’s East Wing project,” the court said. “We conclude only that, based on the submissions before us, the government is likely to prevail in showing that the Trust lacks Article III standing to challenge the project in federal court and that the remaining stay factors favor relief.”

But Roberts, writing in dissent, said that construction of the ballroom is “likely unlawful.” Joined by Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson, the chief justice said that Congress has not authorized the East Wing project.

Roberts also said the injuries asserted by Alison Hoagland, one of the Trust’s members, are sufficient to allow the lawsuit to go forward.

“The White House is not just any building, and — when it comes to historic preservation — Hoagland is not just any person,” he wrote. “In failing to appreciate as much, the Court misconceives the plaintiff’s injury, allowing the Executive’s likely infringement of the Legislature’s power of the purse and authority to regulate federal property in the District of Columbia to continue. Today’s decision is no victory for the separation of powers.”

Mr. Trump praised the ballroom project in response to the Supreme Court’s decision.

“We are living in the Golden Age of America, and this Building will be one of the Greatest ever constructed in Washington, D.C.,” he wrote on Truth Social. “When completed in the Summer of 2028, the magnificent Ballroom and Military Complex will be something that the entire Country is very proud of.”

The National Trust for Historic Preservation said it is “deeply disappointed in the Supreme Court’s ruling today and respectfully disagree with the majority’s opinion on standing. It is noteworthy that the majority did not weigh in on whether the ballroom project was in fact legal.”

“We are pleased with Chief Justice Robert’s strong dissent, which reiterated what we have maintained from the start of our case — that construction of the White House ballroom is unlawful,” the Trust said in a statement. “In addition, this is not the final decision on the merits of our case and does not resolve our fundamental argument — that each President is a temporary steward of the People’s House and does not have the unilateral authority to demolish and redesign it without the approval of Congress.”

We anticipate that the government will file an application for a writ of certiorari and look forward to reviewing it. We urge the Supreme Court to expeditiously consider the government’s certiorari petition, and we will continue to advocate with our partners on behalf of the American people, the democratic values of our nation, and the preservation of our country’s most historically significant places.

The Trump administration requested emergency relief from the court earlier this month after a federal appeals court ruled the White House lacked authority to build the $400 million project without congressional approval.

The divided U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit concluded that Congress — not Mr. Trump or the White House — has “full constitutional control over federal property and the funding of its maintenance and development,” and noted an “absence of any express or implied authorization” that grants Mr. Trump the ability to construct the ballroom.

In a filing with the court, Solicitor General D. John Sauer asked the justices to pause the lower court ruling that blocked above-ground construction while the legal battle over the project plays out. The overhaul also includes an underground bunker, medical facilities and other features, and judges have allowed that work to continue.

“This case involves an extraordinary and unlawful injunction that will halt the ongoing construction of the integrated military complex, including a totally secure ballroom space, at the East Wing of the White House, which is vitally required by national security,” Sauer wrote.

Sauer wrote that the renovations are “absolutely required and should not be enjoined” because any delay threatens Mr. Trump’s safety after recent domestic and international assassination plots against him.

Construction on the project is 65% done, Sauer wrote in the filing, because the initial district court order halting the construction has never gone into effect. He revealed that a 250-person crew is working “20 hours a day, 7 days a week.”

Described as a “superstructure” made of concrete and steel, Sauer told the high court that it rises up to 70 feet high in some places, stretches five stories deep and has a footprint of nearly 50,000 square feet. The ballroom is funded by private donations, and $335 million of an expected $400 million has been raised, Joshua Fisher, director for White House Management and Administration, said in a declaration.

“Given the current progress, the superstructure is beyond the point of return,” he said.

The White House anticipates the structure will be “substantially” completed by November, and the full project is expected to be wrapped by August 2028, when Mr. Trump will have just five months left in his term.

In April, the appellate panel granted an administrative stay sought by the Justice Department that allowed all White House ballroom construction to continue while the court considered briefs and heard arguments. Below-ground work on the presidential bunker and other security upgrades has continued as well during the legal back-and-forth. The D.C. Circuit then upheld the district court’s injunction.

Attorneys for the National Trust for Historic Preservation, which filed suit to block the ballroom project late last year, argued in their response to the Trump administration that the organization would be irreparably harmed if the ballroom construction is permitted and accused the White House of attempting to “outrun judicial review.”

“In the end, the question is not ‘whether the proposed ballroom is desirable, or not, as a matter of policy.’ Nor is it even whether Petitioners may ultimately construct the ballroom,” they wrote in a filing. “The question is simply who decides whether a ballroom can be built on federal property. Our constitutional system and federal law commits that choice to Congress.”

Lawyers for the Trust accused the White House of shifting positions regarding the nature of the project, including its stance that the ballroom was necessary for national security, when previously it said the ballroom could be built independent of the below-ground facilities. They reiterated that the lower court orders allow work on the subterranean bunker to continue.

Mr. Trump has been deeply involved in the project, frequently raising the ballroom during public events and in posts on Truth Social. In a social media post Friday, the president called the Trust “treasonists” and accused them of revealing “top military secrets.”

Portions of some legal filings submitted by the Justice Department to lower courts have been written in the style of the president’s social media postings, including with misplaced capital letters and exclamation points, raising questions as to whether Mr. Trump himself participated in the brief-writing process.

New report exposes intact Iranian bunker that may hide regime’s ongoing nuclear work

    August 31, 2026 4:05pm EDT / Fox News

The Institute for Science and International Security says ‘The facility does not appear to have been targeted in the military actions of either 2025 or 2026’

    By Benjamin Weinthal, Fox News

President Trump warns that Iran would “absolutely” use a nuclear weapon if obtained. Retired Gen. Jack Keane joins Brian Kilmeade to analyze U.S. economic sanctions and military deterrence in the Middle East.

NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles!

A new report from a leading think tank has revealed what it says is a partially submerged Iranian uranium facility at the Natanz nuclear compound in Iran.

The revelation of the secretive facility raises new concerns over whether Iran’s nuclear weapons apparatus was destroyed during the two American-Israeli-launched wars against the regime in 2025 and 2026.

The Washington, D.C.-based Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS) announced in late August that it has located an underground Iranian facility that is likely linked to uranium enrichment for the possible use in production of atomic weapons.

An illustration showing a list of Iran’s nuclear facilities, such as Arak’s heavy water nuclear reactor and the Natanz enrichment plant. (FDD/Fox News)

It wrote that “The facility does not appear to have been targeted in the military actions of either 2025 or 2026. Since the June 2025 war, no vehicle activity has been observed at the facility in available satellite imagery.”

According to the institute, “The Institute has identified a separately enclosed, partially below-ground, bunkered building at the Natanz Nuclear Complex that was likely intended to serve as uranium hexafluoride… storage facility to support large-scale uranium enrichment at the Natanz Fuel Enrichment Plant. The bunkered structure was constructed between 2010 and 2017, with the bulk of construction occurring between 2015 and 2017.”

It further added that “The lesson for today is that any temporary enrichment ban must include a dismantlement and dissolution of remaining capabilities and must not allow for any type of preparatory activity for the end of a ban.”

IRAN NUCLEAR DEAL HINGES ON IAEA ACCESS TO LONG-BLOCKED ATOMIC WEAPON SITES, EXPERTS SAY

FILE – This photo released on Nov. 5, 2019, by the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran shows centrifuge machines in the Natanz uranium enrichment facility in central Iran.(Atomic Energy Organization of Iran via AP, File)

Uranium is the crucial material to produce atomic weapons. Iran’s regime is vehemently opposed to the Trump administration’s demands that it stop enriching uranium and hand over its already enriched uranium.

According to another report by the Institute for Science and International Security in April,” From December 2024 to June 2025, a half-year period, Iran almost doubled its stock of 60% enriched uranium to 440 kilograms. This action dramatically increased suspicion that Iran was moving toward a decision to build nuclear weapons, significantly shortening timelines to be able to create a nuclear arsenal with up to ten nuclear weapons.”

The U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran’s vast nuclear weapons facility during Operation Midnight Hammer in June 2025 significantly set back Iran’s ability to produce atomic weapons and enrich uranium.

OBAMA-ERA INSPECTION FLAWS IN IRAN COULD PERSIST AS EXPERTS WARN OF NUCLEAR BLIND SPOTS

Iran’s President, Masoud Pezeshkian, said they would rebuild the nuclear facilities targeted by the U.S., and make them stronger in 2025.(Iranian Presidency / Handout/Anadolu via Getty Images)

Jason Brodsky, policy director at United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI), told Fox News Digital that “The report assesses the structure at the Natanz nuclear facility was not targeted during Operations Midnight Hammer and Epic Fury. This raises questions as to why the U.S. and Israel did not target the site. Given that Iran is not allowing IAEA International Atomic Energy Agency inspections of bombed facilities, in contravention of its NPT Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons obligations, this will require Washington and Jerusalem to rely on their own intelligence estimates as to this bunkered building.”

Brodsky added, “If it is still intact and can accommodate this kind of enrichment activity, the site should be destroyed in any future strikes. The allowance of such a facility under the JCPOA Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action demonstrates the flaws of the agreement — permitting Iran to retain an industrial scale enrichment program following the sunsets of various provisions — and underscores why zero enrichment in Iran has to continue to be the international demand.”

When asked about the facility and if the IAEA plans to inspect it, Fredrik Dahl, a spokesman for the IAEA, told Fox News Digital, that “The building you are referring to is well-known to the Agency as part of the Natanz site that the IAEA regularly inspected prior to mid-2025.”

Asked about the report, Anna Kelly, a White House spokeswoman, told Fox News Digital that “First, Iran’s nuclear facilities were totally obliterated during Operation Midnight Hammer. Now, Operation Economic Outcast is severing every remaining economic lifeline sustaining the Islamic Republic of Iran. President Trump has been clear that Iran can never possess a nuclear weapon, and America is entering the endgame with the single greatest financial offensive ever mounted against an adversary.”

Successive U.S. administrations have repeatedly designated the Islamic Republic of Iran since the 1980s as a leading state-sponsor of terrorism.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s announcement last week that the U.S. imposed the economic equivalent of the military campaign that defeated Nazi Germany on the Islamic Republic of Iran could set off a series of events leading to the dissolution of the nearly 47-year-old dictatorship in Tehran, according to experts.

Bessent’s declaration of economic warfare — formally designated Operation Economic Outcast — follows President Trump’s commitment to launch an “economic D-Day” against the clerical regime. The comprehensive U.S. economic pressure point campaign also aims to isolate the regime with respect to its efforts to rebuild its nuclear weapons facility.

    Summary

    • Lower court said Congress must approve ballroom project
    • Trump emphasizes national security in defending project
    • Historic preservation group sued to challenge ballroom
    • Chief Justice Roberts calls the project “likely unlawful”
    • Roberts was the only conservative justice to dissent

WASHINGTON, Aug 31 (Reuters) – The U.S. Supreme Court in a 5-4 ruling on Monday let Donald Trump’s administration continue construction of his White House ballroom complex while the president challenges a judicial order that would halt much of the development, with Chief Justice John Roberts in a dissent calling the project “likely unlawful.”

The court granted the administration’s request to block a lower court’s ‌order halting above-ground construction of the $400 million ballroom while a lawsuit by a historic preservation group seeking to stop the project proceeds.

The nonprofit National Trust for Historic Preservation sued last year after the administration
    tore down

the White House East Wing and began building a 90,000-square-foot (8,360-square-meter) ballroom without seeking specific approval from Congress. Trump has said the ballroom will be “the greatest of its kind ever built.”

Monday’s ruling, lauded by Trump, was powered by five of the court’s six conservative justices. They wrote that the plaintiffs lacked the necessary legal standing to sue. They also said the government would likely suffer “irreparable harm” if the project were blocked, citing national security concerns.

Roberts was the only conservative justice to dissent. He was joined in his dissent by the court’s three liberal justices.

The ballroom construction is “likely unlawful,” Roberts wrote, noting that Congress has “plenary constitutional authority over the District of Columbia and federal property” and that it has prohibited structures from being built on federal government grounds in Washington, D.C., without its authorization.

“The ballroom is a building or structure being erected on federal park grounds — President’s Park — in the District of Columbia. Yet Congress has not passed any law resembling ‘express authority’ for the Executive’s construction of it,” Roberts wrote.

    ‘THE GOLDEN AGE’

Trump in a social media post welcomed the ruling and called the legal challenge baseless.

“I am pleased to report that the United States Supreme Court has just ruled in favor of the Ballroom/Military Complex being built without any further contingency, doubt, or threat. We are living in the Golden Age of America, and this Building will be one of the Greatest ever constructed in Washington, D.C.,” the Republican president wrote.

The project combines the above-ground ballroom with an extensive underground complex. Trump has said the project includes bomb shelters, medical facilities, shielding from drones and missiles and other security features that are “all tied together as one big, expensive and very complex unit.” Construction continues on the lower levels of the ballroom structure, with walls and floors visible.

Brent Leggs, president and CEO of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, expressed disappointment with the court’s ruling. Leggs said the dissent written by Roberts “reiterated what we have maintained from the start of our case — that construction of the White House ballroom is ‌unlawful.”

Leggs urged the Supreme Court to fast-track the Trump administration’s expected formal appeal, vowing that his group will “continue to advocate with our partners on behalf of the American people, the democratic values of our nation and the preservation of our country’s most historically significant places.”

In an August 14 Supreme Court filing, Justice Department lawyers echoed Trump’s contention that the project is a security necessity, citing assassination attempts against the president and other recent threats.

“This case involves an extraordinary and unlawful injunction that will halt the ongoing construction of the integrated military complex, including a totally secure ballroom space, at the East Wing of the White House, which is vitally required by national security,” they wrote.

    ‘A TEMPORARY TENANT’

On August 7, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in a 2-1 ruling upheld U.S. District Judge Richard Leon’s order directing the administration to halt above-ground construction.

“Each President is a temporary tenant, not the owner, of the White House,” and cannot fundamentally reshape it without congressional approval, the D.C. Circuit’s ruling stated.

Leon’s order did not permanently bar construction of a ballroom. It blocked above-ground efforts while allowing below-ground construction to continue, as well as work deemed “strictly necessary” for the safety and security of the White House. In its ruling, the D.C. Circuit said national security arguments “are not an automatic get-out-of-law-free card.”

The Justice Department said in its August 14 filing that the overall project — including both the underground facilities and the above-ground ballroom — was 65% complete.

Trump has said the ballroom project is a security necessity, and has referred to the structure as a “military center.” Trump said the D.C. Circuit’s decision left him, other White House officials and visitors exposed to attack.

The project is part of Trump’s broader efforts to reshape the Washington landscape, including plans to build a 250-foot (76-meter) arch and revamp the Kennedy Center, a cultural landmark and performance center.

The demolished East Wing housed the first lady’s offices and the White House movie theater. It was originally built in 1902 during Theodore Roosevelt’s presidency and greatly expanded in 1942 during Franklin Roosevelt’s presidency.

The Supreme Court, with its 6-3 conservative majority, has frequently ruled in favor of Trump in his second term in office, with some notable exceptions, as he has pushed to expand his powers in domestic affairs and foreign policy.

Supreme Court allows Trump to continue building White House ballroom

    2026-08-31 4:03 PM ET / CNN

Supreme Court allows Trump to continue building White House ballroom

The Supreme Court cleared the way Monday for President Donald Trump to continue construction of a massive new ballroom at the White House, rejecting a challenge from a preservation group that was seeking to indefinitely halt the controversial project.

The ruling was 5-4, with Chief Justice John Roberts and the court’s three liberals dissenting.

In its unsigned, eight-page decision, the conservative majority concluded that the National Trust for Historic Preservation likely lacked the legal right — known as standing — to challenge the project. The justices did not say whether the ballroom project was, in fact, lawful.

Related article Trump keeps stacking up ‘emergency’ wins at the Supreme Court

The decision from the high court is a major victory for Trump and will likely give the president the time he needs to largely complete the project, even as the litigation over the ballroom continues in lower courts. The administration has been racing ahead with work on the nearly 90,000 square foot ballroom, which he views as the foundation of his presidential legacy. Trump has said the ballroom is necessary for national security reasons because it will include state-of-the-art features intended to protect the White House from an attack.

The decision is yet another win for the president on the emergency docket at the high court, which he helped ensure would have a conservative supermajority during his first term with the appointment of three justices. Trump’s wins on what also critics call the “shadow docket” have allowed the president to quickly reshape the federal government, upend immigration enforcement and undertake other controversial initiatives that lower courts ruled against.

Roberts, a member of the court’s conservative wing, penned a striking and history-heavy dissent, saying that the construction was “likely unlawful.”

“The White House is not just any building,” Roberts wrote. “In failing to appreciate as much, the court misconceives the plaintiff ’s injury, allowing the executive’s likely infringement of the legislature’s power of the purse and authority to regulate federal property in the District of Columbia to continue.”

The chief justice quoted Winston Churchill opining that people “shape our buildings, and afterwards our buildings shape us.”

That, Roberts wrote, was “all the more reason to ensure that those responsible follow the rules in deciding what to tear down and what to build up at the People’s House.”

Related article Republicans ask Supreme Court to let them air TV ads for less

The president has made significant efforts to impose his style and tastes on the White House and around Washington, DC. He has been personally involved in the ballroom, and hands-on with construction projects including a triumphal arch, the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool, and a planned renovation of the Kennedy Center, all of which have faced legal challenges.

Critics argue Trump violated the law in tearing down the East Wing and pursuing the gilded site without congressional approval. The White House, they said, isn’t owned by the president who occupies it at any given time.

“Whether or not a massive ballroom should be constructed is for Congress to decide and is not a matter for Executive self-help,” the DC US Court of Appeals said in a 2-1 ruling against Trump earlier this month.

Trump heralded the Supreme Court decision in a social media post Monday evening, saying he was “pleased” as he claimed the legal matter was fully resolved.

“I am pleased to report that the United States Supreme Court has just ruled in favor of the Ballroom/Military Complex being built without any further contingency, doubt, or threat,” he said.

Trump called the preservation group’s lawsuit “baseless” as he vowed the structure will be “one of the Greatest ever constructed in Washington, D.C.”

Preservation group not allowed to sue, majority says

The National Trust for Historic Preservation had argued that it had standing because one of its members, Alison Hoagland, has shown that her enjoyment of the White House as an architectural historian is being harmed by the project. The court’s majority rejected that argument, writing that “we have repeatedly held that mere offense, disagreement, or distaste does not qualify as a concrete and particularized injury” required to sue.

“Today, we do not pass upon the legality of the government’s East Wing project,” the majority wrote. “We conclude only that, based on the submissions before us, the government is likely to prevail in showing that the Trust lacks Article III standing to challenge the project in federal court.”

Brent Leggs, president and CEO of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, said in a statement following the decision, “We are deeply disappointed in the Supreme Court’s ruling today and respectfully disagree with the majority’s opinion on standing. It is noteworthy that the majority did not weigh in on whether the ballroom project was in fact legal.”

Earlier this month, Roberts had allowed Trump to continue building the ballroom while the court reviewed the president’s emergency appeal. Without that temporary order, construction would have halted later that day under a lower court’s order.

As part of the litigation, the Trump administration revealed how much construction had progressed in recent months. Hundreds of workers are spending “20 hours a day, 7 days a week to keep the project ahead of schedule and under budget,” it said in court filings, and the project is already more than halfway done. Among the building materials being used is a type of concrete that is also used at nuclear power plants and nearly impossible to deconstruct.

The Trust seized on that point as they urged the Supreme Court to reject Trump’s emergency appeal to continue construction. They said the administration was trying to “outrun judicial review” by speeding ahead with a project that the administration is claiming may already be irreversible.

Army Secretary Dan Driscoll resigning after friction with Hegseth

Washington— Army Secretary Dan Driscoll is resigning, the White House confirmed Monday, after months of friction with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

“Secretary Driscoll has been highly effective in advancing President Trump’s agenda to Make America Strong Again at the Department of the Army by providing outstanding leadership during historic military operations, restoring an emphasis on readiness and lethality, assisting with negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, and more,” White House spokesperson Anna Kelly told CBS News. “The United States Army is more powerful than ever thanks to his work alongside the Commander-in-Chief and Secretary of War.”

A U.S. official told CBS News the secretary spoke to President Trump about the current state of the Army and submitted his resignation.

CBS News reported last week that Driscoll was considering stepping down from his post by the end of the year.

An Iraq war veteran and former adviser to Vice President JD Vance, Driscoll has served as the Army’s top civilian leader since his Senate confirmation in February 2025.

His tenure has included the U.S. operation that captured former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro — which involved members of the Army’s elite Delta Force — and the ongoing war with Iran. Driscoll has also met with Ukrainian and Russian officials as part of Mr. Trump’s push to end Russia’s war against Ukraine, and his time leading the Army coincided with a plan to cut the number of U.S. forces in Germany.

But there has been behind-the-scenes tension between Hegseth and Driscoll, CBS News has reported.

Earlier this year, Hegseth ousted Gen. Randy George — a close friend of Driscoll — as Army chief of staff, asking him to retire. The Army is also phasing out a new battalion supported by George that was tasked with studying lessons on drone warfare, including from the Ukraine war, following friction between the Army officers who supported the new battalion and acting Army chief of staff Gen. Christopher LaNeve.

Driscoll is the latest high-level military official to exit. Navy Secretary John Phelan left his role earlier this year, with Mr. Trump saying Phelan “had some conflicts with some other people.” Several officers have also retired in the last year, including George, former U.S. Army Europe and Africa commander Gen. Christopher Donahue and U.S. Southern Command commander Adm. Alvin Holsey.

    • Summary
    • Poll shows 46% of Democrats are very enthusiastic about November voting versus 31% of Republicans
    • Among independents, 36% say they would vote Democratic and 22% Republican in midterms
    • Some 71% disapprove of Trump’s handling of cost of living, Reuters/Ipsos poll shows

WASHINGTON, Aug 31 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump’s approval rating was stuck ‌at the lowest level of his political career amid broad dissatisfaction over the war in Iran and the Republican’s economic stewardship, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll that concluded on Monday.

Just 33% of Americans approve of the job Trump is doing in the White House – the third straight Reuters/Ipsos poll with that share of respondents giving the president a thumbs up.

Trump’s political brand looks increasingly like a potential weight on his Republican Party, which will be defending slim congressional majorities in the November 3 midterm elections.

Democrats appear more fired up about the elections, with 46% of self-identified Democrats describing themselves as “very enthusiastic” about voting in November, compared to 31% of Republicans, according to the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll which surveyed 1,167 U.S. adults nationwide.

Asked which party they would vote for if the congressional elections were held today, 36% of independents in the survey picked Democrats and 22% said Republicans.

Since mid-August, Trump’s popularity has held at a level it only briefly touched early in his first presidency, and well below the 47% share of Americans who approved of ‌his performance early in his current term. His rating is lower than the low point his predecessor in office, Democrat Joe Biden hit, at 35% approval, in October 2024.

Like Biden, Trump has been dogged by widespread discontent over high levels of inflation. Gasoline prices have surged since Trump ordered the U.S. to start bombing Iran in February, and just 36% of Americans approve of the war, the Reuters/Ipsos poll showed.

The conflict has had long lulls over the period, but in recent days the two sides have traded missile strikes and since the war’s outset Iran has largely blocked a major transit point for the global oil trade.

Some 71% of Americans – including four in 10 Republicans – disapprove of how Trump is handling the cost of living. For the last month, registered voters in the survey have been saying the Democratic Party has better ideas for the economy than the Republican Party, the first time Democrats have led on the issue in about a decade.

The four-day poll had a margin of error of 3 percentage points in either direction.

WASHINGTON, Aug 31 (Reuters) – The Trump administration will soon announce sharply lower vehicle fuel-economy standards, reversing ‌a push by the prior administration to force automakers to build more fuel-efficient vehicles, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said Monday.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in December proposed significantly reducing fuel economy requirements from model years 2022 to 2031, requiring a fleetwide average 34.5 miles per gallon by 2031, down ‌from 50.4 miles per gallon (21.4 km per liter) under former President Joe Biden.

“We are about announce a common-sense fuel economy standard because we want Detroit to build cars that Americans want to buy — not cars that Democrats want Washington to build,” Duffy said at an appearance in Michigan.
