President Donald Trump was the unofficial third person onstage at Wednesday’s Michigan U.S. Senate debate, as Democrat Abdul El-Sayed repeatedly invoked him while seeking to cast Republican Mike Rogers as Trump’s “sock puppet.”

El-Sayed mentioned Trump 18 times during the hour-long debate and repeatedly called Rogers’ responses “MAGA bingo,” accusing the Republican of relying on Trump-aligned talking points. Rogers, however, broke with Trump on a couple of trade issues.

The phrase became a running theme throughout the night, with El-Sayed declaring “MAGA bingo” after Rogers accused him of supporting socialist policies, open borders and defunding the police. Rogers eventually turned the attack back on his opponent, suggesting that the real bingo game was every time El-Sayed included Trump in his answer.

Rogers, however, did not align with Trump on every issue. He split with Trump on trade, calling the president’s tariffs a “mixed bag” and saying tariffs on Canada may have been “not well thought through.”

He also opposed Chinese automakers building vehicles in the United States, saying during the debate that Congress should ban the ability for the Chinese to build cars in the United States. El-Sayed countered by pointing out that Trump has said he would be open to Chinese automakers building vehicles in the United States and questioned whether Rogers would stand up to Trump on the issue.

Wednesday evening marked the second debate between El-Sayed and Rogers, just weeks before Michigan’s midterm election.

The battle for the swing state’s open Senate seat has drawn national attention not only because it could help determine control of the upper chamber, but because it has emerged as a major test of the Democratic Party’s progressive wing in a key battleground state.

El-Sayed, backed by progressive heavyweights including Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., has campaigned on a progressive agenda that includes Medicare for All, higher taxes on the wealthy, ending U.S. military aid to Israel and abolishing ICE.

While El-Sayed worked to paint Rogers as a Trump-aligned “corporate politician,” Rogers repeatedly branded his Democratic opponent as having a “pattern of deception,” accusing him of misrepresenting his record and shifting his positions.

Throughout the debate, Rogers cast El-Sayed as being outside the political mainstream, tying the Democrat and his policies to the Democratic Socialists of America and hammering him over his past support for defunding the police.

Rogers also claimed that some of El-Sayed’s donors and supporters were tied to Hamas, Hezbollah and the Muslim Brotherhood.

At one point, Rogers questioned El-Sayed’s allegiance to the country after accusing El-Sayed of having donors tied to Hamas, asking, “Are you for America or are you for these terrorist groups overseas?”

The most contentious moment of the debate came during a question on public safety, when Rogers hammered El-Sayed over his past support for defunding the police, accused him of deleting social media posts on the issue and pointed to El-Sayed’s past comments involving former Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, who was backed by the Muslim Brotherhood.

El-Sayed fired back that it was “beneath” Rogers to question his commitment to the Constitution, declaring that he was “proud to be an American” and calling Rogers’ line of questioning “shameful.”

ROGERS ARGUES EL-SAYED IS VULNERABLE WITH 2 TRADITIONALLY DEMOCRATIC BLOCS AS OBAMA HEADS TO MICHIGAN

El-Sayed, a Muslim and first-generation American whose parents emigrated from Egypt, has faced scrutiny over his rhetoric on the war in Gaza and his positions on Israel, leading some members of Michigan’s Jewish community to openly disavow the Democratic candidate. During the debate, Rogers said that his campaign was doing well with the Jewish community, which he claimed is fearful of El-Sayed’s rhetoric.

Rogers said that El-Sayed was too “extreme” for Michigan, pointing to prominent Democrats who said they can’t back the party’s nominee, including the former Michigan Democratic Party chairman and the former finance chair for Sen. Elissa Slotkin’s campaign.

Michigan Republicans echoed that argument following the debate, pointing out that El-Sayed used to campaign with Twitch streamer Hasan Piker, who once said that America deserved the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

“We cannot afford Abdul El-Sayed’s far-left, big-government policies, and we cannot risk electing a person who campaigns with the likes of Hasan Piker and seemingly justified the horrific terrorist attack targeting children and the Jewish community in Bloomfield Hills,” MIGOP Chairman Jim Runestad said in a statement.

Minnesota’s gubernatorial candidates clashed over the state’s fraud scandals in their second debate of the week, with Republican House Speaker Lisa Demuth pledging to fire all state commissioners on her first day in office and Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar defending her response.

The scandals have rocked the North Star State, raising questions about how large-scale abuse of state programs went undetected and putting government oversight at the center of the governor’s race.

“Fraud unchecked here in the state of Minnesota has gone far too long, and it has finally come to the surface,” Demuth said.

“The thing that I will do on day one is I am going to be firing all commissioners, choosing new commissioners that are expert in their field, that will carry out the accountability and transparency that is needed in our state. We have to change the culture of fraud.”

Klobuchar called Demuth’s remarks “absurd” and said she contacted U.S. Attorney Andy Luger after the fraud came to light to ask what prosecutors needed.

“He said, ‘I need more prosecutors’,” Klobuchar said. “I called the highest level of the Justice Department, and I got him those prosecutors.”

Klobuchar also said she would have caught the fraud earlier, while criticizing Walz’s response. “Tim Walz should have caught the fraud earlier and he should have done more,” she said.

She also sought to distinguish herself from the outgoing governor and criticized Demuth for not clearly separating herself from President Donald Trump. “We don’t need a rubber stamp of Donald Trump in the governor’s office,” Klobuchar said.

Demuth countered that Klobuchar had not identified specific policies on which she would break with Walz, whom Klobuchar has called an “incredible governor.”

Beyond fraud, Klobuchar and Demuth used the debate to draw broader contrasts over the economy, taxes, public safety and the direction of the state. Both candidates have ruled out tax increases, but Demuth has argued Minnesota needs to rein in spending and regulations, while Klobuchar has emphasized lowering costs for health care, housing and child care.

Wednesday’s debate in Rochester was the candidates’ second faceoff this week and likely their final debate before Election Day on Nov. 3. Republicans have not won a statewide race in Minnesota since 2006.

The race will also make history regardless of the outcome, producing Minnesota’s first female governor. A Demuth victory would additionally make her the state’s first Black governor.

During Wednesday night’s Michigan U.S. Senate debate, Democrat Abdul El-Sayed passionately denied ties to the Muslim Brotherhood and admonished Republican Mike Rogers for attempting to link him to the organization.

“El-Sayed was passionate about defunding the police,” Rogers said, responding to a question about law enforcement funding. “As a matter of fact, he asked the Muslim Brotherhood, excuse me, head Morsi in Egypt, to defund the police there, too. I mean, it’s unbelievable.”

Rogers was referencing a letter that The Washington Free Beacon reported El-Sayed signed in 2012 calling on the Egyptian president, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, to purge his nation’s police force.

“To bring into question my commitment to the Constitution is really beneath you,” El-Sayed responded.

“I am proud of America. I’m proud to be an American. I’m proud of our Constitution that guarantees all of us the right to pray as we choose to pray. And the question — that you would ask that — I think is actually really quite shameful. As somebody who’s actually served under that Constitution, it is shameful.”

El-Sayed also caught flak after social media posts from his half-sister alleging that their mother was involved in Muslim Brotherhood activism in the 1970s resurfaced. El-Sayed has denied personal or family ties to the organization and maintained that he was not raised by his biological mother.

“He keeps raising this question about this association with the organization,” El-Sayed said at the debate. “I’ve never been a part because my mom, who’s a nurse in Missouri, it doesn’t make any sense. And it’s actually really quite beneath you, Mike. It’s really quite beneath you.”

There is no evidence to suggest that El-Sayed has any affiliation with the Muslim Brotherhood.

“I know you want to make this about you being a victim,” Rogers said. “This is about an ideology. An ideology that’s banned in five Muslim countries, an ideology that’s banned in another six different countries, an ideology that is very concerning to law enforcement in the United States because they use it for funding overseas operations.”

“Mike Rogers demonstrated yet again why he is the commonsense, steady hand Michiganders want to see in the U.S. Senate,” Michgian GOP Chairman Jim Runestad said following the debate. “We cannot afford Abdul El-Sayed’s far-left, big-government policies, and we cannot risk electing a person who campaigns with the likes of Hasan Piker and seemingly justified the horrific terrorist attack targeting children and the Jewish community in Bloomfield Hills.”

The chair of the Michigan Democratic Party, meanwhile, stated that “the choice this November is clear: Abdul El-Sayed is the candidate who will always put Michigan first, while Mike Rogers will only ever fight for Donald Trump, his wealthy donors and himself.”

Republican Wisconsin gubernatorial nominee Tom Tiffany vowed Wednesday to mandate cooperation between local sheriffs and federal immigration authorities, drawing a sharp contrast with Democrat David Crowley over President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown during their general election debate.

Tiffany said Wisconsin law enforcement agencies should be required to honor federal immigration detainers, arguing that coordination with ICE allows authorities to remove illegal immigrants accused of crimes while they are still being held in county jails.

“I will make sure that local, county and state law enforcement coordinate with federal law enforcement,” Tiffany said in the debate hosted by WISN-TV.

Asked directly whether he would mandate that cooperation by law, Tiffany replied: “Yes, I believe we should. They should honor detainers.

Crowley, the Milwaukee County executive, said he would not support a blanket ban on cooperation with federal immigration authorities and agreed that immigrants convicted of crimes should be deported. But he called for restrictions on ICE operations, including barring contracts between local law enforcement and ICE, requiring judicial warrants for agents to enter jails and prisons and prohibiting agents from wearing masks.

“We need to make sure that we’re protecting people’s civil liberties,” Crowley said.

Immigration enforcement has become an increasingly visible flashpoint in Wisconsin, where ICE arrests surged this summer as the Trump administration expanded its nationwide deportation push.

That debate is already playing out across Wisconsin. Twenty county law enforcement agencies in the state participate in ICE’s 287(g) program, which allows designated local officers to perform certain immigration enforcement functions. Cooperation with ICE has also emerged as an issue in sheriff races in Sauk and Winnebago counties ahead of the November election.

Wisconsin has simultaneously seen a sharp increase in federal immigration enforcement since Trump returned to office. The latest available federal data showed ICE arrests in the state reaching new highs over the summer, with more than 2,100 people detained between January 2025 and the latest reporting period.

The issue has become a complicated one for both parties heading into the midterms. Republicans have continued to campaign on border security and immigration enforcement, while Democrats have increasingly focused their attacks on the Trump administration’s deportation tactics and the conduct of ICE agents.

Son says Stephen Hubbard was experiencing “extreme tiredness with life” before release from Russian jail

Washington — Fr. Joseph Coleman feared he would never again see his father, Stephen Hubbard, when they had a brief phone conversation last year while Hubbard was in a Russian prison.

“He was expressing a very extreme tiredness with life, the life that he was experiencing at that time. I don’t want to say suicidal thoughts, but the conversation hinted it leaned in that direction,” Coleman, a Greek Orthodox priest, told CBS News on Wednesday in his first television interview since his father’s release.

Hubbard’s release was announced earlier Wednesday during a meeting between U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Hubbard, a U.S. citizen, was imprisoned in Russia for more than four years after being accused of fighting for Ukraine. The U.S. government had deemed Hubbard wrongfully detained.

President Trump said Putin had agreed to release Hubbard at his request, with “no ‘swap’ necessary,” though he also said that his decision to waive new sanctions against Russia played a role in Hubbard’s release.

In a one-minute phone call with his father before Hubbard took off from St. Petersburg, Coleman said he sounded better than he had during their last conversation in May 2025. Witkoff was also present, leaving little opportunity for a private exchange.

“I want to embrace him as a son embraces his father. I want to personally assess his health to make sure he’s well,” Coleman said. He said he would also give his dad space to adjust to freedom and expected to see Hubbard later that evening.

Coleman, who lives in Cyprus, did not grow up in the same home as Hubbard, who was divorced from Coleman’s mother. He said the family had lost track of Hubbard entirely for roughly three years after his detention.

Martin De Luca, Hubbard’s U.S.-based attorney, told CBS News that when his legal team took on the case in February 2025, neither the family nor the U.S. Embassy knew precisely where Hubbard was being held.

Lawyers in Russia eventually located him and arranged for legal visits, money for food and basic necessities, and the brief phone call with his son.

De Luca said the isolation had taken an enormous toll.

“It’s just being isolated from everybody you’ve ever known and just from the outside world,” he said.

After Putin granted Hubbard’s release, Witkoff praised the Russian president as a “humanitarian,” prompting swift backlash from Republican and Democratic lawmakers. Putin is wanted by the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes involving the deportation of Ukrainian children, and Russian forces have been accused of widespread abuses during the war.

Asked about Witkoff’s description of Putin, Coleman called his father’s release “a small step toward peace in this greater conflict” and thanked Putin for signing off on the deal.

He described the decision as an act of “compassion and even mercy.”

Hubbard, a 74-year-old retired schoolteacher, was captured in Ukraine shortly after Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022 and accused of manning a checkpoint for mercenaries. He was later sentenced to almost seven years in a penal colony following a closed-door trial.

His family has consistently disputed the charges.

De Luca said his legal team conducted its own investigation, interviewing people who knew Hubbard and examining his circumstances before the invasion. He said they found no evidence that Hubbard had served in the Ukrainian military or was physically capable of doing so at roughly 70 years old.

“We have not seen any evidence to support those allegations,” De Luca said. He added that the Russian case file was largely sealed and that his team had repeatedly sought evidence substantiating the charges.

De Luca and Coleman both credited the Trump administration’s diplomatic engagement with Moscow for securing Hubbard’s freedom.

Asked whether recent U.S. decisions benefiting Russia — including sanctions relief and purchases of Russian diesel — were connected to Hubbard’s release, De Luca said he did not believe there was a direct link, though he acknowledged that bilateral relationships involve multiple overlapping interests.

Mr. Trump, however, has explicitly said that allowing new sanctions to take effect would have prevented Hubbard’s release.

And despite Hubbard’s release, as many as 20 Americans remain imprisoned in Russia, including some whose families dispute the charges against them. The State Department continues to warn Americans against traveling to Russia because of the risk of wrongful detention.

De Luca said he was not concerned that the administration’s engagement with Moscow would encourage further detentions, arguing that diplomatic dialogue had helped secure several Americans’ freedom.

But Russia has not been designated a state sponsor of wrongful detention under a new Trump administration policy, despite its history of imprisoning Americans on questionable charges. Iran and Afghanistan have both received the designation.

Coleman stopped short of blaming his father for his circumstances but acknowledged he might have made a mistake by remaining in Ukraine as Russian forces advanced.

“The Russian forces told foreign nationals to leave and he did not,” Coleman said. “I do not like what happened to my father. I am ecstatic that he is free. But he was living in an area that was a war zone.”

“I’m not saying his detainment was justifiable. I’m not saying that,” he said. “But these things happen in war.”

Republican Mike Rogers and Democrat Abdul El-Sayed clashed onstage Wednesday during the second, and final, debate in the increasingly bitter Michigan Senate race. El-Sayed repeatedly argued his opponent is and would be a “sock puppet” for President Trump in the Senate, while Rogers cast his opponent as untrustworthy and trying to run from past, further-left positions.

The neck-and-neck race is one of the nation’s most closely watched contests in the November midterms and could help determine which party wins control of the Senate. Democrats hope to take advantage of Mr. Trump’s unpopularity and voters’ frustration with inflation and the Iran War. Republicans have sought to capitalize on divisions between progressives like El-Sayed and more moderate Democrats on Middle East policy and Medicare for All.

El-Sayed called Rogers’ platform a “MAGA vision” and argued the former congressman “stand[s] hip-to-hip with Donald Trump on all of his worst policies, the policies that are raising the price of your gas, making it impossible to afford your groceries.” The Democratic former health official responded to attack lines by inviting the audience to play “MAGA bingo.”

“He’s going to bend to Donald Trump because he is a sock puppet for the man,” said El-Sayed.

Rogers pushed back at one point, saying: “He wants to make this about Donald Trump. The bingo game ought to be: ‘How many times can he put Trump in any answer?’”

Asked by reporters after the debate if he’s planning to attend Mr. Trump’s Michigan rally on Sunday, which El-Sayed brought up, Rogers said he’d go but didn’t know all the final details yet.

During the debate, Rogers argued El-Sayed has not been honest about his platform, accusing him of engaging in a “pattern of deception.”

“Think about this: there are so many Democrats who are coming out today and saying they can’t vote for Abdul El-Sayed because he’s too extreme,” Rogers said. He also claimed he’s “doing exceptionally well with Jewish Democrats who are literally afraid,” alluding to some community members’ reluctance to support El-Sayed, a frequent critic of the Israeli government.

The debate was somewhat tamer than the two candidates’ first faceoff earlier this month, which featured insults and interruptions in virtually every answer. But it was still testy.

One of the more contentious moments came after Rogers tried to link El-Sayed to the Muslim Brotherhood and suggested he had the same supporters as terror groups like Hamas — allegations El-Sayed has vehemently pushed back against.

Earlier this month, several news outlets reported on social media posts by El-Sayed’s half sister suggesting the Democratic candidate’s mother had supported the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist group and political movement founded in her home country of Egypt.

El-Sayed has disavowed any connection to the organization, and has noted that he wasn’t raised by his birthmother since his parents divorced when he was young. Rogers said El-Sayed was trying to make himself look like “a victim.”

“You can grin and you can smile and you can talk real pretty, but I’m going to tell you what, that is a risk to our national security,” Rogers said. He told reporters after the debate that he questions whether El-Sayed can get a security clearance if elected.

El-Sayed called the allegations “shameful.”

“He keeps raising this question about this association with an organization I’ve never been a part of, because [of] my mom, who’s a nurse in Missouri?” the Democrat said. “It doesn’t make any sense, and it’s actually really quite beneath you, Mike.”

El-Sayed pressed Rogers on the Iran war, pointing to the conflict as the cause of high consumer prices and casting the Republican as a hawk who has “a war for everything.”

“We need a War Powers Resolution, rather than a senator who is going to stand hip-to-hip with Donald Trump on this war that made no sense when it started and certainly makes no sense now,” El-Sayed said when asked how he would bring costs down.

Rogers has called on the war to end, but also said on the debate stage that if Iran is allowed to control the Strait of Hormuz or build a nuclear weapon that gas could rise even higher.

The moderators asked El-Sayed whether he views Iran as a significant threat to U.S. national security. It was a variation on a question during the first debate, when El-Sayed was asked whether Iran or Israel is a bigger threat, which he called a “ridiculous hypothetical.”

El-Sayed said Wednesday that “there’s no doubt that Iran has posed a threat,” but he argued “that threat had been contained” by the Obama-era deal that limited Iran’s nuclear program. Mr. Trump ended that deal during his first term in office.

Rogers said Iran is “absolutely” a threat and argued El-Sayed’s previous answers on Iran were “an absolute nonstarter if you’re going to send somebody … to the United States Senate.”

Meanwhile, Rogers pushed El-Sayed on some of his progressive policy views, including his support for Medicare for All, a single-payer healthcare plan.

“Money in your pocket? You’ll be lucky to have a damn pair of pants when you’re done,” said Rogers, arguing El-Sayed’s policies would require significant tax hikes.

El-Sayed responded by saying: “Right now, the folks pulling the money out of your pocket are the big corporations who are buying his campaign.” Asked by CBS News after the debate about how much the plan would cost, El-Sayed argued if implemented it’d be less expensive than the costs of healthcare currently, and said the platform has bipartisan support.

On tariffs, El-Sayed criticized Mr. Trump’s tariffs but said he is open to some import duties. He said, “You don’t give all the chemo all at once, all at the same time.”

Rogers called the president’s tariffs a “mixed bag,” questioning the trade war with Canada but saying the “reshoring of manufacturing is underway.”

台湾国防部罕见证实已编列预算，邀请美国退役上将及军方人员赴台观摩汉光演习。分析认为，台湾公开相关安排，可能意在向北京传递美国支持台湾的信号，并试探大陆对台美军事合作的底线。

台湾《联合报》星期四（10月22日）报道，台湾国防部上周向立法院提交书面报告，说明2026年及2027年汉光演习美国观摩团赴台所需经费，共编列8243万8000元（新台币，下同，324万新元），其中今年已执行4121万9000元。

根据这份名为“资深观摩员年度评估暨双方交流”的军购案报告，汉光演习期间，美国将派遣退役上将担任资深观摩员，并由美国印太司令部组织军事及文职专业人员组成观摩团，根据演习目标及观摩结果，向台军提出提升联合作战能力的建议。

AI助发现PHP严重漏洞 多国政府网站及热门游戏暂停服务

全球多地政府机构和企业星期三关闭网站，以应对PHP编程语言曝出的两个严重安全漏洞。PHP是许多网站运行的基础技术，全球约七成网站使用PHP。

网络安全公司Wiz说，这是PHP有史以来发现的最严重漏洞之一，甚至可能是软件发展史上最严重的漏洞之一。黑客可利用漏洞控制网站服务器，无须密码即可入侵。

美国国家安全局星期三（10月21日）在社交媒体平台X发声明说，这些漏洞“往往能让攻击者直接进入服务器的文件系统或数据库”。当局呼吁各机构立即安装修补程序，或将受影响的系统暂时下线。

只有在自有服务器上运行PHP的网站才会受到影响。部分使用其他编程语言的大型平台，以及能迅速安装修补程序的平台则得以继续运作。
