Abortion, ICE and socialism spark fireworks in swing state governor debate: 5 top moments

    2026-10-22T04:00:22-04:00 / Fox News

Tiffany backed Wisconsin’s 20-week limit while Crowley declined to name any gestational cutoff, sparking a sharp exchange

    By Morgan Phillips Fox News

    Published October 22, 2026 4:00am EDT

Republican Tom Tiffany and Democrat David Crowley sparred over abortion, taxes, immigration and Wisconsin’s growing data center industry Wednesday night as Wisconsin’s gubernatorial candidates faced off in a heated debate.

Tiffany, a Republican congressman, and Crowley, the Milwaukee County executive, offered competing visions for Wisconsin as they vie to succeed Democratic Gov. Tony Evers.

The WISN-hosted debate came less than two weeks before Election Day, with polls showing a tight race. A September Marquette Law School poll found Crowley leading Tiffany 49% to 46% among likely voters, a difference within the survey’s margin of error. RealClearPolitics rates the race a toss-up.

WISCONSIN GOP GOVERNOR CANDIDATE SWIMS FROM SINKING PLANE AFTER EMERGENCY LAKE LANDING

Here are five of the biggest moments from the debate.

    1. Tiffany points to 20-week abortion limit as Crowley declines to name one

Tiffany pointed to Wisconsin’s existing 20-week abortion limit when moderators asked whether he would sign a six-week abortion ban, a restriction he previously supported as a legislator.

“I voted for a five-month bill when I was in the state Senate. I will uphold that law as the governor of the state of Wisconsin,” Tiffany said.

“I have been very clear where I stand. I’ve given the answer that I’m at five months,” he added.

Tiffany also sought to reassure women about his position.

“All you women out there, you will not have to hold your breath when I’m governor,” he said.

Crowley, meanwhile, declined to specify a gestational limit for legal abortion, even when moderators asked whether he supported abortion through nine months.

“These are discussions that need to be made between a doctor and a patient,” Crowley said.

‘MODERATE’ DEM GUBERNATORIAL CANDIDATE EMBRACED DEI BUDGET TOOL, GREEN NEW DEAL-STYLE POLICIES

Francesca Hong for the party’s gubernatorial nomination, on August 12, 2026, in Middleton, Wisconsin.(Paul Steinhauser/Fox News Digital)

Tiffany accused Crowley of supporting abortion through “the full nine months.” Crowley countered that abortions later in pregnancy typically involve extreme circumstances and criticized Tiffany’s previous support for stricter abortion legislation.

“My position has been consistent ever since I announced for governor,” Tiffany responded. “We once again did not hear where David Crowley stands on abortion.”

    2. Tiffany vows to return Wisconsin’s entire $3 billion surplus

The candidates split over Wisconsin’s nearly $3 billion projected budget surplus, with Tiffany pledging to return the entire sum to taxpayers through permanent tax cuts.

“We should return all of that to the taxpayers. They’ve overpaid into the state of Wisconsin,” Tiffany said.

Tiffany favored permanent tax cuts over rebate checks, arguing Wisconsinites cannot plan their finances around one-time payments. His proposal includes income and property tax reductions, including a 10% middle-income tax cut.

Crowley argued the surplus should be used more broadly to lower costs for families, including through property tax relief and investments in public schools, municipalities, childcare and healthcare.

Tiffany argued Wisconsin could cut taxes without sacrificing funding for education, transportation and healthcare. Crowley countered that Tiffany’s plan would deprive state and local governments of revenue needed to provide those services.

    3. Candidates draw stark battle lines over ICE

Tiffany pledged to require Wisconsin sheriffs to honor federal immigration detainers, drawing a sharp contrast with Crowley over cooperation with ICE.

“I will make sure that local, county and state law enforcement coordinate with federal law enforcement,” Tiffany said, arguing immigrants who commit crimes should be transferred to federal authorities while still in county jails.

Asked whether that cooperation should be mandated by law, Tiffany said, “I believe we should.”

Crowley opposed a blanket ban on cooperation with federal immigration authorities and said immigrants convicted of crimes should be deported. However, he called for restrictions on ICE operations in Wisconsin, including ending contracts with local law enforcement, prohibiting agents from wearing masks and requiring judicial warrants before entering jails and prisons.

“We need to make sure that we’re protecting people’s civil liberties,” Crowley said.

    4. Data center boom puts subsidies, farmland and energy costs in spotlight

Wisconsin’s data center boom emerged as another campaign issue, with both candidates opposing taxpayer subsidies for the massive projects.

Tiffany outlined conditions for data center development under his administration, including protections against higher utility rates, a ban on taxpayer subsidies, local control, farmland protections and greater transparency.

“Why would some of the wealthiest companies in the world need subsidies from the taxpayers of Wisconsin?” Tiffany said.

Crowley said communities should not be forced to accept data centers they do not want and said he would sign legislation eliminating sales tax incentives for the projects.

Crowley also supported the current pause on data center development pending an environmental review and called for greater reliance on renewable energy to meet rising electricity demand.

    5. Crowley says he’s ‘not familiar’ with DSA platform

Crowley faced questions about the Democratic Party’s left flank after narrowly defeating democratic socialist Francesca Hong in the Democratic gubernatorial primary.

Asked which democratic socialist priorities he shared, Crowley cited expanding BadgerCare, funding public education and childcare and holding wealthy Americans accountable.

But when moderators asked which parts of the Democratic Socialists of America platform he supported, Crowley said he could not answer.

“I’m not familiar with the DSA platform to be answering that question,” Crowley said.

Tiffany pointed to Crowley’s previous claim that little separated him from Hong during the Democratic primary.

“That sounds like a socialist to me,” Tiffany said.

    https://www.foxnews.com/video/6401042129112

El-Sayed, Rogers clash over Muslim Brotherhood, Trump and guns: 5 fiery debate moments

    October 22, 2026 6:00am EDT / Fox News

The Michigan Senate candidates faced off in their second and final debate before the Nov 3 general election

    By Leo Briceno

Former Rep. Mike Rogers and his Democratic opponent, Abdul El-Sayed, tore into each other at their second Michigan Senate debate Wednesday evening.

Rogers, a former FBI special agent and the Republican U.S. Senate candidate, clashed with El-Sayed over the personal barbs, accusations and fierce divides that have defined one of the country’s most anticipated Senate elections.

Here are some of the most noteworthy moments from the fiery faceoff.

Republican Senate nominee Mike Rogers is making a direct pitch to Michigan Democrats following Abdul El-Sayed’s primary victory.(Sarah Rice/Getty Images; Jeff Kowalsky/AFP via Getty Images)

El-Sayed accuses Rogers of backing Trump’s war with Iran

As evidence of Rogers’ alignment with President Donald Trump, El-Sayed accused him of backing the war in Iran, a conflict El-Sayed himself described as “aimless.”

“He’s got a war for everything, and he won’t back off the war now. He supports this war,” El-Sayed said.

“If you don’t believe me, I want you to pay attention. On Sunday, when Donald Trump comes here at the invitation of Mike Rogers to remind you that, in fact, Donald Trump is on the ballot through Mike Rogers. They are hip to hip on this war, and you are paying the cost,” he added, referring to one of Rogers’ upcoming campaign events.

Rogers quickly fired back, reiterating a moment from their first debate when El-Sayed refused to answer whether Israel or Iran posed a greater threat to the U.S.

“My opponent can’t even condemn the [Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps], which is the terrorist enforcement arm of Iran, and doesn’t believe Iran is any more dangerous than Israel. This is an absolute nonstarter,” Rogers said.

THE MEDICARE FOR ALL TRADE-OFFS SOCIALISTS AREN’T TALKING ABOUT, ACCORDING TO EXPERTS

Rogers sparks explosive moment with resurfaced Muslim Brotherhood accusations

At one point during the debate, Rogers accused El-Sayed of deleting social media content about defunding the police — a progressive stance that circulated among far-left Democrats in 2020 after the death of George Floyd.

“I will tell you this: he did call for defunding the police … [and] he deleted all of this material. Why would you do that? Why would you go through and take all of that time to delete all of the material? X videos, comments, podcast. Why? Because he was passionate about defunding the police,” Rogers said.

“As a matter of fact, he asked the Muslim Brotherhood head, Morsi, in Egypt to defund the police there, too,” Rogers added, referring to the former Egyptian president associated with the group.

The last remark triggered a fierce reaction from El-Sayed, who has fended off questions about ties to the Muslim Brotherhood throughout his campaign.

“He keeps raising this question about this association with the organization,” El-Sayed said. “It’s really quite beneath you.”

Although Fox News Digital has not discovered any links between El-Sayed and the Muslim Brotherhood, critics have pointed to El-Sayed’s ties to the Muslim Students Association (MSA), a group listed as part of a strategy memorandum for North America written by one of the Muslim Brotherhood’s members, Mohamed Akram.

El-Sayed served as the vice president of the MSA chapter at the University of Michigan during his time there as a senior in 2007, according to College Fix.

ABDUL EL-SAYED’S ALLEGED FAMILY TIES TO MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD SURFACE AFTER DENYING ANY LINK DURING NBC INTERVIEW

Rogers blasts hidden costs of expanding government promises

Throughout the night, El-Sayed doubled down on promises to expand government programs like Medicaid and measures to “put money in your pocket,” a refrain that has been a cornerstone of his campaign.

But Rogers made sure to cast doubt on those commitments, arguing that the policies would carry with them a heftier price tag than the Democratic nominee would acknowledge.

“So think of all of the three things he just talked about. Put money in your pockets. It’s a great slogan. There’s nothing behind it. Matter of fact, when his Democratic socialist-aligned policies are engaged, you’ll be lucky to have a d— pair of pants when you’re done,” Rogers said.

“Medicare for all. He doesn’t tell you how much taxes you have to get charged, and you lose your private health insurance. These aren’t real solutions. These are solutions that are going to make your life more miserable. And it’s going to take away your choices in healthcare.”

    https://www.foxnews.com/video/6401042129112

Rogers claims El-Sayed said ‘quiet part out loud’ on AI regulation

When asked about AI regulation, Abdul El-Sayed briefly mentioned he would support having “democratically appointed folks on the board of these AI corporations,” citing what he described as an existential threat to the workforce.

Rogers seized on the moment, accusing El-Sayed of verbalizing a desire to exercise public control of private companies.

“He said the quiet part out loud,” Rogers said.

“He wants government to go into these businesses. That is the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). [They] come in for your business and your future. And so, you need to really stop for a minute and think about, do you want somebody who wants the government involved in these companies?” Rogers added.

Notably, Abdul El-Sayed has not officially received an endorsement from the DSA, nor has he affirmed the group’s platform. Even so, he has endorsed and received endorsements from a number of candidates who have received the DSA’s backing. Among them, El-Sayed supported New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a self-proclaimed socialist, in his bid for office last year.

ROGERS WARNS MICHIGAN VOTERS AGAINST EL-SAYED’S ‘EXTREME’ AGENDA AHEAD OF ELECTION

El-Sayed gets heat in rapid-fire round over Second Amendment

At the close of the debate, Rogers fired back at El-Sayed when the Democratic candidate needled him for refusing to answer yes or no to a question about implementing universal background checks for gun purchases.

“It all depends. It all depends,” Rogers said.

“It’s not hard. Look at that. So dependable,” El-Sayed quipped.

Rogers fired back, noting that El-Sayed had once called for doing away with the Second Amendment in comments he had made before he launched his Senate bid.

“You want to ban the Second Amendment. Why don’t you talk about that?”

Rogers was alluding to a video published on YouTube in 2023 in which El-Sayed had compared the right to bear arms to a right to healthcare.

“What if we tweaked the Constitution, amended the amendment, and instead of the right to bear arms, we change it to the right to have healthcare?” El-Sayed said.

Michigan Senate Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed has spent his campaign denying he wanted to defund the police, but in an unearthed clip he asked, “Do police really need to use guns?”(Sarah Rice/Getty Images)

He claimed altruism in the proposal, saying more people would live and arguing against individuals owning firearms, instead suggesting that only designated community-based groups like police forces should be issued firearms.

The video has since been made private.

With their second debate now in the rearview mirror, El-Sayed and Rogers have closed out their scheduled debates and are unlikely to meet again until after the election. Having cleared their respective primaries and secured their parties’ nominations, the pair will face off in Michigan’s general election on Nov. 3.

After the debate, MIGOP Chairman Jim Runestad said in a statement to Fox News Digital: “Mike Rogers demonstrated yet again why he is the commonsense, steady hand Michiganders want to see in the U.S. Senate. We cannot afford Abdul El-Sayed’s far-left, big-government policies, and we cannot risk electing a person who campaigns with the likes of Hasan Piker and seemingly justified the horrific terrorist attack targeting children and the Jewish community in Bloomfield Hills.”

    2026-10-22T09:00:15.419Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/10/22/politics/cnn-top-10-senate-races-most-likely-to-flip

    https://www.cnn.com/

The top 10 Senate seats most likely to flip, less than two weeks before the midterms

    2026-10-22T09:00:15.419Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/10/22/politics/cnn-top-10-senate-races-most-likely-to-flip

With the November election in sight, Democratic excitement about the party winning control of the US Senate is running high, but it’s far from a sure bet.

Democrats have a 10-point advantage over Republicans nationwide in voters’ choice in their own congressional district, according to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS. President Donald Trump’s approval rating sits at 33% among US adults, the CNN Poll of Polls average shows, and cost-of-living concerns, including the economic fallout from the war with Iran, weigh heavily on many voters’ minds.

But the red makeup of this year’s Senate map should not be underestimated. Trump won many of the most competitive states on this list in 2024 by double digits, and Republicans are dedicating large sums for advertising to defend their turf. A review of AdImpact data for the final two weeks of the midterms shows more than $300 million pouring into races from both sides for the 10 seats on this list.

Kansas and New Hampshire have switched spots on this list as the Midwest as a whole grows more competitive in recent weeks. We also included four other states we consider to be on the bubble, offering potential surprises on Election Day.

Our ranking of the seats most likely to flip in November is based on CNN reporting, including conversations with strategists involved in Senate races, as well as our analysis of candidate fundraising, polling and the partisan environment in the states. The rankings are a snapshot of where the contests stand at this point and can shift as the midterm election season enters its final days.

North Carolina once again sits atop the list, as Democratic former Gov. Roy Cooper is leading in polls over GOP candidate Michael Whatley. Republicans have pulled back on their spending in the race with GOP groups reserving only $2.5 million for the final two weeks of the campaign compared to the $13.2 million from Democrats, according to AdImpact data.

No midterms contest is expected to see more ad spending over the final two weeks of the election than Ohio, with about $75 million combined remaining. A CNN Poll of Polls average shows Democrat Sherrod Brown, a former senator, with a narrow advantage over Republican Sen. Jon Husted, 49% to 44%. That includes a recent CNN poll conducted by SSRS that showed Brown is more well-known and better viewed than Husted, who was appointed to fill the seat vacated by Vice President JD Vance.

Like much of the Senate landscape, Ohio is a state Trump won by double digits. But the president is deeply underwater in the state, with only 36% of likely voters approving of his performance, the CNN poll found.

Brown is hoping to ride anti-Trump sentiment into November and is seizing on political vulnerabilities for Republicans in his ads, including a new TV spot knocking Husted over data centers and the Epstein files.

Trump is working to rally the GOP base, holding two events in Ohio and another in neighboring Kentucky, which borders Cincinnati, just this month. Republicans are on track to outspend Democrats here in the final two weeks by about $9 million.

One wildcard: An 11th-hour ad from Republican gubernatorial nominee Vivek Ramaswamy’s campaign featuring his opponent’s estranged mother. Husted distanced himself from the video, telling The Associated Press, “I would not have run that ad.”

Alaska keeps its spot at No. 3. Democrat Mary Peltola, a former congresswoman, appears to be in a strong position against Republican GOP Sen. Dan Sullivan.

Polling in the large, remote state has been sparse, but a New York Times/Siena poll released earlier this month showed Peltola up 7 points over Sullivan.

The two candidates clashed in a debate last week. Sullivan questioned Peltola’s character as he cited allegations that she mistreated her staff, while the Democrat accused the senator of lying and dishonesty.

The debate also highlighted the difficult position Trump’s war with Iran has created for GOP candidates. Sullivan said the war “needs to end soon” as the economic fallout has hit the state, where gas prices are particularly high.

    4. Maine

Republican Sen. Susan Collins is locked in one of her toughest reelection bids yet against Democrat Troy Jackson.

Recent polling has shown no clear leader, but much of the race hinges on frustration with the president and Collins, who Democrats argue doesn’t stand up to Trump when it matters most. Her vote to confirm Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who later joined the majority that overturned Roe v. Wade, has made abortion rights an issue in this contest.

Collins is the only Republican senator running in a state won by former Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024. But Collins has defied her state’s leftward lean in the past and promoted the benefits she’s brought to Maine as chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee. On Wednesday, she campaigned with former West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, who switched his party affiliation from Democrat to independent.

In the final two weeks, Republicans are on track to spend nearly $17 million, compared to about $14 million from Democrats.

The race between Democrat James Talarico and Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton is generating some of the biggest attention of this midterm cycle.

A CNN Poll of Polls average in the Senate race shows a tight race between Talarico and Paxton, 49% to 47%. The new Fox News poll finds a tied contest there. While most of the surveys included show the race within the margin of error, none have found an advantage for Paxton.

One of the biggest developments in this race since the last rankings: A frenzy over Talarico’s more than weeklong absence from the campaign trail, sparking conspiracy theories promoted by Republicans about his whereabouts. Talarico set the record straight in a CNN and Jubilee Media town hall, saying he had the flu and calling the conspiratorial focus a distraction from the issues that matter to voters.

Talarico’s ability to make this race so competitive and Paxton’s political baggage are giving Democrats hope they finally might break their 32-year losing streak in statewide races. But to do so, Talarico must still win in a state Trump carried by nearly 14 points in 2024.

The GOP’s money bomb to save Paxton, fueled in large part by political groups linked to tech billionaire Elon Musk, will continue into the final two weeks. Republicans are set to spend three times what Democrats have reserved, even if the massive amount of spending may not be dinging Talarico’s standing as much as Republican strategists had hoped.

All told, Republicans are set to spend more than $380 million on ads for the Senate race in Texas, including the primary and the general election – a staggering total for a state that the GOP has dominated.

The race between Democrat Abdul El-Sayed and former Rep. Mike Rogers has become one of the most contentious matchups of the year.

A new CNN Poll of Polls average showed no clear leader, with El-Sayed at an average of 49% among likely voters and Rogers at an average of 47%.

The Muslim Brotherhood has emerged as a flashpoint in the campaign as Republicans attempt to cast El-Sayed as sympathetic to the interests of Islamic terror. El-Sayed, who would become the first Muslim senator if elected, last weekend denounced the Muslim Brotherhood in a heated exchange at a campaign event while also arguing he’s been unfairly accused of the same “dual loyalties” that former Presidents John F. Kennedy and Barack Obama were.

Both candidates are facing real challenges. El-Sayed still needs to win over Black voters who sided with his opponent in the Democratic primary and Jewish Democrats skeptical of his candidacy. Rogers is grappling with Trump’s unpopularity in the state, as a recent Marist survey showed 44% of likely voters viewed their decision as mainly against Trump.

But Republicans are set to outspend Democrats by almost double over the final two weeks, about $27.2 million to $15 million.

Trump will campaign in the state on Sunday in Port Huron, across the border from Canada, while Obama will appear with El-Sayed for a Detroit rally Saturday that could help with Black voters.

Michigan is key to Democrats’ path to the Senate majority, and this race feels far from settled. If El-Sayed loses, it would require Democrats to win at least five Republican-held seats, many in states Trump won by double digits in 2024.

A CNN Poll of Polls average shows no clear leader here, with Democrat Josh Turek polling at 47% and Republican Ashley Hinson at 46%. A CNN poll conducted by SSRS last month found likely voters favored a Republican-controlled Senate (53% to 46%).

Trump won the state by double digits in 2024, and his approval rating in the state stands at 41%, higher than the national average. But economic headwinds are playing heavily in the race. About three-quarters of people in the state say the president’s policies have increased the cost of living.

Turek could benefit from a strong performance by the Democratic gubernatorial candidate Rob Sand, who has led his GOP opponent in polls.

Republicans are set to spend about $23.5 million in Iowa and Democrats close to $30 million.

Kansas moves up one spot to No. 8 as Republicans race to save this seat in a state that hasn’t elected a Democratic senator in 94 years.

Democrat Adam Hamilton is running a competitive race against GOP Sen. Roger Marshall. A NYT/Siena poll last month showed the two candidates tied.

Hamilton, a Methodist megachurch pastor, describes himself as an “independent-minded Democrat” and would need the support of Republican voters in a state Trump carried by 16 points in 2024. Marshall, a doctor, is contending with voter frustration on the economy and the Iran war while facing backlash over a New York Times report detailing his tactic of suing hundreds of patients for outstanding medical bills.

Both parties are surging resources to the state few envisioned would be in play at the start of the cycle, each party with more than $11 million booked over the last two weeks.

In a sign of the party’s shifting resources, the GOP is set to spend more in Kansas during this period than in Georgia and North Carolina combined. And Trump campaigned with Marshall in the state this week, casting the race as a choice between “radical” Democrats who will destroy America and a continuation of his self-described “golden age.”

New Hampshire moves down one spot as Democratic Rep. Chris Pappas appears on more stable ground in his contest against GOP former Sen. John Sununu.

A University of New Hampshire poll conducted in September showed Pappas up 8 points over Sununu while a NYT/Siena survey showed the race within the margin of error.

One factor aiding Pappas is Trump’s unpopularity in the state as the NYT/Siena poll showed his approval rating at 38%. While his opponent works to link him to Trump, Sununu has gone as far as releasing a TV ad this week distancing himself from the president, saying “I’ve never even met the man.”

Pappas has embraced high-profile Democrats campaigning on his behalf, including an upcoming visit from Harris, who won the state by 3 points in 2024.

Georgia sits at the bottom of the battleground states most likely to flip in November as Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff appears to have a lock on the state Trump won in 2024. An Atlanta Journal-Constitution poll conducted by the University of Georgia found Ossoff with an 8-point lead over Republican Rep. Mike Collins, 48% to 40%.

It could be argued that the state should move off this list entirely. But Georgia was included in the rankings from the beginning. Its low position now reflects the GOP’s lost opportunity in one of their few offensive targets outlined at the start of the cycle.

The list above includes many toss-up states that could determine the midterm election. But there is another tier of states on the bubble where a variety of factors could cause a surprise upset on Election Day. Here are those states – two in the Midwest and two in the South – that we’re watching in the final stretch:

GOP Sen. Pete Ricketts is facing off against Dan Osborn, an independent candidate who unsuccessfully ran for Senate in 2024. Nebraska is another midwestern state Trump won in 2024 that is now feeling the economic pinch from Trump’s war with Iran. Republicans are set to spend $10 million in the final weeks compared to nearly $6 million from Osborn and his allies.

Republican Sen. Darline Graham is running against Democrat Annie Andrews, a pediatrician, for a full term after being appointed to her late brother Sen. Lindsey Graham’s seat. Darline Graham entered the race with little political experience of her own, and the GOP has sent in reinforcements to prevent this seat from moving toward Democrats. The GOP-aligned Senate Leadership Fund has allotted $5 million for ads in the final two weeks, and Trump campaigned in the Palmetto State on Wednesday. Voters have not elected a Democratic senator in the state in nearly three decades.

Minnesota has largely flown under the radar in this election, but a GOP win has the potential to sneak up on Democrats’ efforts to hold this blue seat. Democratic Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan is facing off against Republican Michele Tafoya, a former sports broadcaster turned conservative activist. The GOP feels the state’s welfare fraud scandal hurts Flanagan. But Republicans have not spent substantive money to try to move the needle in the race, and Flanagan could be aided by Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar’s appearance on the ballot in the governor’s race.

Mississippi is another southern state Democrats believe could end up in play with their nominee, Scott Colom, challenging GOP Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith. Colom’s allies argue the GOP’s political headwinds and the state’s sizable percentage of Black voters (35%) could work in their favor. The Democrat-aligned Senate Majority PAC announced a $1.2 million ad campaign this week and Harris is expected to join Colom on Thursday. In one buzzy ad, Colom’s campaign mocked Hyde-Smith for a comment suggesting there are “so many proteins to choose from” when asked about rising beef prices.

This is still a state Trump won by 23 points, making it an uphill battle for Democrats. But in one sign of its potential competitiveness, the president plans to campaign in Mississippi on Monday.

Republicans are spending millions on ads that recount heinous crimes. Victims’ families say they didn’t agree to it

    2026-10-22T10:00:17.510Z / CNN

When Robin Buonodono saw the TV spot, she felt like she couldn’t breathe. The ad described the 1994 murder of her 5-year-old daughter, Nicole VanNoty. The story of the killing had been repurposed as a political attack ad without her knowledge by a Republican super PAC seeking to defeat Michigan’s Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed.

“I had a panic attack,” said Buonodono, who left Michigan after her daughter’s killing. “Why are you using someone’s child’s death for political gain?”

The Senate Leadership Fund spent at least $3.7 million on ads that recounted how Jason Symonds raped and killed Nicole. Buonodono said SLF never contacted her.

The ads, which began running in September, were among many funded by SLF, the Republican Party’s most powerful Senate super PAC, that turned real killings into attacks on Democratic Senate candidates in Michigan and North Carolina. A CNN review of ads using the tracking service AdImpact found SLF spent at least $17 million on spots naming victims or perpetrators.

In at least three cases, relatives said SLF never told them their loved ones’ deaths would be used. Family members who spoke to CNN described the spots as haunting, heartbreaking and distressing.

The ad campaign reflects a familiar Republican strategy: invoking violent crime to cast Democrats as soft on public safety. But the reach of streaming, digital and social platforms has made such messages harder for victims’ families to avoid and raises ethical questions about whether political groups – and some Republican campaigns – should seek consent before broadcasting a family’s trauma.

“These ads can circulate in so many different mediums and be present in ways they weren’t before social media,” said Daniel Kreiss, a professor of political communications at the University of North Carolina, who added that notifying a family before an advertisement airs is a matter of human decency.

“You owe it to those people, that family, to give them a heads up,” Kreiss said.

SLF, which is affiliated with Senate Majority Leader John Thune, has spent more than $325 million on political ads since the beginning of 2025 to defend the GOP’s Senate majority. It funded the ads examined here in Michigan and North Carolina. Across the political landscape, ad spending is on pace to top $11.6 billion this cycle, which would make this the most expensive election cycle in history, according to AdImpact.

The Senate Leadership Fund did not respond to questions about its advertising practices but provided a statement. “Every life lost to violent crime is an intolerable tragedy, made even worse when it is entirely preventable and the direct consequence of failed liberal policies,” communications director Chris Gustafson said.

In Michigan, SLF pledged $45 million — a state record — to support former Rep. Mike Rogers against El-Sayed, then added another $6 million in August.

SLF also spent roughly $2 million on Michigan ads recounting the 1999 rape and murder of Jessica Ledford. Her fiancé, Robert Homrich, said SLF never contacted him and that for awhile he saw the spots several times a day on YouTube.

“It’s haunting me every day,” Homrich, who still lives in Michigan, said. “They’re using my own personal tragedy to spin an election.”

The Michigan ads target El-Sayed’s 2018 proposal to commute life sentences for “low risk” people convicted as juveniles. The Supreme Court had ruled in 2012 mandatory life-without-parole sentences for juveniles unconstitutional, requiring states including Michigan to resentence such inmates.

Symonds, who was 16 when he killed Nicole, was ordered in August to remain in prison for life without parole. Marc Osborne, who killed Ledford shortly before his 18th birthday, is expected to become eligible for parole in 2039 after resentencing.

“Abdul believes we absolutely need to fund law enforcement to protect communities from violent crime,” said El-Sayed’s campaign spokesperson Cole Wozniak. “Mike Rogers and his allies will continue to tell absurd lies about Abdul’s record to distract from Rogers’ record of voting against funding for law enforcement.”

In response to CNN’s request for comment on this story, the Rogers campaign responded with a statement criticizing El-Sayed’s connections to super PACs.

In North Carolina, SLF spent at least $4 million on ads that showed Jimmie Speight Jr. and said he “murdered an innocent man.” That man was Edmond Moore Jr. His mother, Pamela Moore, said SLF never contacted her.

“It’s heartbreaking, really. It’s heartbreaking and numb. How could you use a mother and a father’s son’s death to give yourself some credibility?” Moore said.

The ads blamed Democratic Senate candidate Roy Cooper for letting Speight out of prison. As governor, Cooper’s administration settled a pandemic-era lawsuit over prison crowding in 2021, leading to the release of roughly 3,500 inmates. But Speight had already been released from prison when the settlement was reached.

“Independent fact-checkers have called these attacks false and misleading – Michael Whatley and his allies are desperate and it’s shameful they are using heinous crimes to boost his campaign,” a Cooper campaign spokesperson said in a statement.

Whatley’s campaign did not respond to requests for comment.

Democrats have put out few advertisements this year that describe specific victims and crimes. One notable exception: Texas Senate candidate James Talarico’s campaign spent at least $5 million on an ad that criticizes his opponent, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, for a plea deal his prosecutors offered a Waco attorney charged with sexually abusing a child. The deal has become a flashpoint in the race that could determine control of the US Senate.

Before this advertisement ran, a woman who said she was a spokesperson for the victim’s family posted on Facebook: “Note from the victims’ family: We have not given any statement to Talarico. We have not spoke to him. We are tired of being used in this election. We are tired of lies being told by both Paxton & Talarico, tired of the divide and just tired.” CNN has not been able to verify the post.

“Elected officials on both sides of the aisle have called out Ken Paxton for this corrupt plea deal. The judge presiding over the case has called out this plea deal. Residents of Waco have protested this plea deal. Texans are demanding justice to ensure this never happens to another family,” Talarico spokesperson JT Ennis said in a statement.

Republicans are leaning on crime because voters tend to trust the party more on the issue, said Travis Ridout, co-director of the Wesleyan Media Project. The talking points also give the GOP a potential message at a time when they’re dealing with persistent inflation, high energy costs and an unpopular Republican president.

These types of soft-on-crime attacks have been a Republican staple for decades, from Richard Nixon’s “law and order” campaign to the 1988 Willie Horton ad against Michael Dukakis. Last month, President Donald Trump invoked Horton while campaigning for Whatley in North Carolina, arguing that Cooper had failed to keep the state safe.

That attack ad featured Horton, a black man imprisoned for murder who was convicted of rape and assault after he failed to return from a Massachusetts prison furlough. While widely criticized as racist, it proved effective: Dukakis was leading in the polls, but after the ad aired, George H.W. Bush overtook him and went on to a landslide victory.

In that speech, Trump also cited the 2025 murder of 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska on a commuter train in Charlotte. Video captured the moment that Decarlos Brown Jr. stabbed Zarutska – footage that was used in an ad funded by Whatley’s campaign without Zarutska’s family’s consent.

“We’ve been very clear: We do not want her death to be political. It’s a public safety issue,” said the family’s attorney Lauren Newton. “No one asked us.”
