    Natixis CIB Americas

As oil roundtrips, AI booms, and US consumers spend, economists’ Fed outlooks hit the extremes

    2026-06-17T10:03:12.861Z / https://www.reuters.com/business/oil-roundtrips-ai-booms-us-consumers-spend-economists-fed-outlooks-hit-extremes-2026-06-17/

    • Summary
    • The Fed is expected to leave rates unchanged at 3.5% to 3.75% this week
    • Investors expect just one quarter-point rate increase by year-end
    • Economists’ forecasts range from three cuts to three hikes in coming months

WASHINGTON, June 17 (Reuters) – Is the second half of 2026 when the U.S. consumer finally cracks and leaves the economy gasping for breath, or will rising inflation and strong investment and hiring force the Federal Reserve to hike interest rates to ‌tame surging growth similar to what happened during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Pick a view and there is a highly trained economist helping advise billions of dollars in capital who shares it, particularly now when the outlook is muddied by volatile geopolitics, U.S. growth that seems narrowly based but continues beating expectations, and financial markets that may reflect an economy on the cusp of a profound transformation or yet another bubble.

For Fed rate policy “the next move will be lower. (Inflation) expectations are anchored, real wage gains are negative,” said Chris Hodge, head U.S. economist at Natixis CIB Americas, with two quarter-percentage-point rate cuts in coming months as consumer weakness and the impact of falling inflation-adjusted wages starts to be felt. “Are they going to want to hike in an environment when inflation is driven by supply considerations?”

Indeed, since the announcement of a U.S.-Iran deal reopening the Strait of Hormuz, global benchmark oil prices have plummeted to below $80 a barrel and are now barely 10% above where they were before the start of U.S.-backed bombing led Iran to shut the strategic waterway. Citi economists see even more potential for dovishness, and expect sequential rate cuts at Fed meetings in September, October and December.

At PGIM, by contrast, Chief Economist Robert Sockin sees three rate hikes coming in an economy that “continues to power along with above-trend growth, above-target inflation, and now a warming labor market” that after a slow start of the year is producing jobs at a pace more comparable to the years before the pandemic.

The gap in professional views is perhaps understandable given all that is in play right now. Here’s just some of what’s up in the air: A still-unsettled regime of ‌import taxes under court challenge even as President Donald Trump seeks new ways to impose them; oil prices that soared more than 70% during the U.S.-Iran hostilities but are now plunging; and tension between the artificial intelligence investment boom and the falling share of economic growth going to workers. Meanwhile, new Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh is still to provide his first view of the landscape.

The first meeting chaired by Warsh concludes on Wednesday. Interest rates are expected to remain on hold in the current 3.50%-to-3.75% range, but between a new set of economic projections from Fed policymakers and Warsh’s debut press conference, the hunt will be on for signs of whether the Fed sees the dawn of a new disinflationary era ahead or increased risks that high inflation will require higher borrowing costs.

The broad expectation is the new projections will show the Fed remaining on hold this year, though with a growing sense that a rate increase may be needed. Investors expect just a single quarter-point rate increase by the end of the year.

Given the divergence of views in the profession and at the central bank itself, there may be more incentive than usual to say as little about the future as possible.

“There are 19 Fed policymakers, and it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that they have 19 different views on the balance of risks regarding the conflict in Iran, the impact on the outlook for growth and inflation, and the appropriate policy response,” wrote Thomas Simons, chief economist with Jefferies. “On top of great uncertainty about the outlook, solid labor market fundamentals and a lack of bleed-through of high energy prices to core inflation gives the FOMC breathing room to maintain their wait-and-see approach.”

Want to start a business? AI can help, business owners say

New artificial intelligence tools are making it easier to start a business, fueling entrepreneurship and potentially job growth.

AI can write a business plan, conduct in-depth industry research, generate marketing content, design logos, prototype new products, and otherwise help launch or scale up a new enterprise, said Chris Franco, an entrepreneur who has used AI extensively in growing his New York-based marketing and customer acquisition firm, Woodridge Growth.

“You can do anything you can imagine. There’s nothing holding you back,” he told CBS News. “There’s no excuse not to start a business in this age.”

In recent years, new business formation across the U.S. has surged to its highest level ever, according to Census Bureau data. Solo founders are driving much of that growth, according to an analysis of Census data from Stripe Economics.

AI is slashing the cost of starting and running a business, said Torsten Slok, chief economist at asset management firm Apollo Global Management.

“That’s because you can more easily write a business plan with a large language model, use agents to do work, so that’s likely the reason the economy is becoming more dynamic for entrepreneurs,” he added. “It’s becoming easier for experts in their respective fields, like consulting, finance or legal services, to break out and become entrepreneurs and compete with some of the incumbents.”

    Lower cost, higher speed

One way AI is lowering the barriers to creating a new business: reducing startup costs.

“Are founders able to hire leaner teams and do more with less funding because of AI? One hundred percent,” Angela Lee, a professor of entrepreneurship at Columbia Business School and herself a serial entrepreneur, told CBS News.

For example, Lee recounted spending $20,000 for coders to build a website for one of the first businesses she launched in the 1990s.

“Today, you can use Lovable to vibe code a website in 20 minutes with a free tool,” Lee told CBS News, citing a popular AI coding app. “Everything has decreased in cost and increased in speed.”

Ernie Tedeschi, chief economist at Stripe Economics, described how entrepreneurs are leveraging AI to launch new enterprises.

“It can help you come up with a business plan, or give you advice on supply chains. It can do what you need to make your vision a reality,” he said. “It can help you identify what forms you need to fill out and help you complete them before you even get to the idea itself.”

    “It helps us understand”

Albert Feldman, owner of Boston-based candle company Sky Candle Co., started his business before the era of artificial intelligence. But he has since turned to AI to create marketing campaigns, for financial planning and to generate a range of vital analytics. That has helped Sky Candle operate efficiently and compete with much larger enterprises, he told CBS News.

“It helps us understand what products we should make more of and which we should move away from. We make the product ourselves — we hand-pour the candles — so it requires a lot of financial planning,” Feldman said. “By leveraging historical sales data, it helps us know how many wax and scent vessels we need to buy, and helps us make heads and tails of everything.”

Although the advent of AI has stoked concerns that the technology could displace millions of workers, Apollo’s Slok expects it to fuel innovation and, in time, job creation.

“If a fraction of the new ideas people have end up being successful, they’ll need employment,” he said. “It suggests the economy is becoming more dynamic, and ultimately, AI is going to create more jobs.”

Lee of Columbia Business School is less optimistic. “Founders are hiring less, and unfortunately, I think ultimately it will take away jobs.”

    image

(GOAT,Greatest Of All Time)的争论,随着他的每一场比赛都变得愈发没有争议。

Messi ties men’s World Cup goals record with first World Cup hat trick as Argentina tops Algeria

    2026-06-17T06:09:00-0400 / CBS News

    Updated on: June 17, 2026 / 6:21 AM EDT / AP

Kansas City, Mo. — Lionel Messi used the front of his white-and-blue, sweat-soaked jersey to wipe the tears from his eyes, a flood of emotions cracking his usually calm, confident demeanor after he gave Argentina an early lead in its 2026 Men’s World Cup opener against Algeria.

Then he scored again. And again.

Suddenly, any questions about Messi’s hamstring injury, or whether he could help Argentina become the third team to win consecutive World Cups – even as his 39th birthday approaches next week – had been answered. With a brilliant hat trick in a 3-0 win over Les Fennecs, Messi moved into a tie with Germany’s Miroslav Klose for the career scoring record at the Men’s World Cup.

“My tears after the first goal? I’ve had some tough days. It wasn’t related to football. And those feelings were because of that,” Messi said afterward, without elaborating. “I thank my teammates, the coaching staff and the delegation for helping me.”

Messi scored that emotional first goal in the opening minutes on a nifty feed from Inter Miami teammate Rodrigo De Paul, the second off an opportunistic rebound early in the second half, and the third on a crisp strike moments before subbing out to a standing ovation from a crowd of 69,045 tilted heavily toward the three-time World Cup champions.

“At a loss for words about Leo. What can I say?” Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni said. “He’s incredible.”

    Messi records abound

His incredible trio of goals came 20 years to the day that Messi made his World Cup debut in a match against Serbia and Montenegro – he scored in that one, too – and made the pride of Rosario only the second player to score in five editions of the men’s tournament.

Messi has 16 goals in his record six World Cup appearances overall, and it seems inevitable that Klose’s record will fall in the coming weeks. The hat trick was the 61st of Messi’s career, his 11th while playing in his national team colors and his first in the World Cup.

It also was the fifth straight World Cup game in which Messi has scored.

“It makes me very happy to have lived through everything that came my way. What I’m living though now is the cherry on top,” Messi said. “I’m very happy an grateful for this wonderful group. I enjoy it so much.”

Messi upstaged two of soccer’s other stars – Kylian Mbappé of France and Erling Haaland of Norway – who had big games of their own on Tuesday. Mbappé scored twice in France’s 3-1 win over Senegal to move into a tie for fourth on the men’s World Cup goals list with 14, while Haaland scored twice for Norway in its 4-1 victory over Iraq.

“Messi is a madman,” Haaland said in a post on Snapchat during Argentina’s game.

Messi had been dealing with a minor hamstring injury with Inter Miami that slowed him in the lead-up to the World Cup. But the eight-time winner of the Ballon d’Or, which honors global soccer’s best player, had no problems in a tuneup last week with Iceland, scoring on a penalty kick while playing 20 minutes in a sharp performance.

A career marked by greatness — and longevity

“This is my sixth World Cup, and I still feel like I’m in good shape,” Messi said. “Fortunately, I’m doing well, and today we managed to win a tough match. It’s important to start the tournament with a victory in the first game, as that’s never easy in a World Cup.”

Messi’s appearance against Algeria was the 200th of his international career, which began in 2005 at age of 18. The only players with more are Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, who will play his 229th on Wednesday, and Bader al-Mutawa, who played in 202 for Kuwait.

Messi and Ronaldo are the only men to have scored in five World Cups.

“Class is permanent,” Algeria coach Vladimir Petkovic said. “He’s fortunate to have the privilege that the entire Argentina team works for him, and supports him, and for a number of years now – decades – he’s done incredible things.”

Argentina is among four national teams making their base camps in the Kansas City metro. And much as it has the rest of the world, Messi-mania has swept through the area ever since La Albiceleste’s arrival in the Heartland about two weeks ago.

On match day, thousands of fans wearing his No. 10 jersey trekked into the home of the NFL’s Chiefs on the outskirts of Kansas City, singing odes to their hero. Meanwhile, during a watch party at the downtown Power & Light District, a goat accompanied by former NFL quarterback-turned Fox broadcaster Jameis Winston came on stage wearing an Argentina jersey.

The humorous moment seemed to have foreshadowed a big night for Messi when he scored an hour later, and the argument that he’s soccer’s GOAT – the greatest of all time – is becoming no argument at all with every match he plays.

“It’s an advantage to have Leo because of how he handles the group and pushes it forward. Because of who he is,” De Paul said. “He doesn’t care about individual records. He prioritizes the group, and for us it’s incredible.”

Trump says he is canceling DNI hearings as he vents frustration at legislative maneuvering over surveillance law

    Summary

    • President Donald Trump canceled a confirmation hearing for his intelligence chief nominee Jay Clayton.
    • Trump expressed frustration with legislative negotiations over a surveillance law extension, accusing Democrats of breaking a deal.
    • Trump said acting Director of National Intelligence Bill Pulte will remain in the role despite concerns about his appointment.

AI-generated summary was reviewed by a CNN editor.

    Geneva—

President Donald Trump said he is canceling a planned hearing Wednesday for his nominee to serve as director of national intelligence, venting frustration at legislative maneuvering over a US surveillance law.

Writing on Truth Social, Trump said he wouldn’t allow hearings to proceed for his DNI nominee Jay Clayton until Clayton’s replacement as Manhattan US attorney is confirmed.

“We are cancelling the Senate Hearing RE: DNI today, and will not be going forward until Jamie McDonald is approved to be U.S. Attorney,” Trump wrote. “In the meantime, Bill Pulte will remain as the Acting Director of National Intelligence.”

Canceling a Senate hearing would typically be decided by the committee holding the hearing — in this case, the Senate Intelligence Committee. It was unclear if Trump had spoken to the panel’s chairman, Republican Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas, before posting his message about the hearing, which is set to take place at 2:00 p.m. ET Wednesday.

Pulte was Trump’s controversial selection to serve as acting head of intelligence. He was slated to begin the job on Friday. He has used his current position atop a housing agency to go after Trump’s perceived rivals.

Pulte’s selection caused outcry among Democrats, who refused to put up the votes needed to pass an extension of the key foreign surveillance program.

When Trump nominated Clayton to serve permanently in the DNI job, Senate Republicans expedited the nomination process in the hopes of ensuring Pulte would not remain in the job long.

Trump, in his post Wednesday, appeared upset that some Republicans had worked to hasten Pulte’s exit from the intelligence post.

“The Republicans agreed with Dumocrats to remove very fair, and talented, William Pulte, from serving as Acting DNI in return for getting FISA approved by the Dumocrats. However, the Republicans moved so fast with the hearings of the Great Jay Clayton, current U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, that Pulte would be gone before the Dumocrats would vote on FISA,” Trump wrote.

“Now, the Dumocrats are saying they will vote against FISA — So, the Republicans wound up having fulfilled their commitment, but Dumocrats broke the Deal,” he went on.

Trump also repeated his insistence that the extension of the surveillance law be paired with the sweeping voting overhaul legislation known as the SAVE America Act.

Dramatic rescue efforts after fiery small plane crash in Laredo, Texas, kills 1

    2026-06-17T04:30:00-0400 / CBS/AP

A business jet with six people on board crashed on a highway in Laredo, Texas, and caught fire Tuesday night, authorities said, killing one person and causing chaos as people left their vehicles to frantically try to smash the cockpit window and free those inside.

Drivers who came upon the burning plane, which was nearly sheared in half and tipped on its side, captured dramatic rescue scenes on video or rushed toward the aircraft on foot to help. Two people came running with a sledgehammer and shovel they used to strike the cockpit glass and try propping open the plane’s door.

The plane crashed on the Loop 20 highway near the Texas-Mexico border shortly after 10 p.m., said Jose Baeza, an investigator with the Laredo Police Department. Laredo is some 140 miles southwest of San Antonio.

Laredo International Airport Director Gilberto Sanchez told CBS News in a statement that the airport got an alert at 9:58 p.m. local time saying a Cessna Citation was experiencing mechanical issues and was low on fuel.

He said it lost communication with the tower and crash-landed a few minutes later, a few miles from the airport.

One of those on the plane was pronounced dead at the scene, Sanchez said, and the other five were taken to local hospitals and were reported to be in stable condition.

The plane was heading for Austin, Texas, he said.

The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration both said they’re going to investigate. The FAA said the NTSB will take the lead.

Dashcam footage posted on social media showed the aircraft careening down the highway, taking out a light post before coming to a stop. It came to a rest not far from the Laredo International Airport.

“It looked like part of a movie. I was in shock,” said Zayra Garza, an esthetician who was driving her co-workers home when she came upon the crash.

No injuries on the ground were immediately reported, though five officers were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

Video posted to social media showed the plane on its side, smashed into a highway barrier. The tail was ripped from the fuselage and laying mostly intact on a lower-level road beneath where the rescue was taking place.

Garza began shooting video as she approached the scene and then stopped her vehicle across from the crippled jet, which was on fire.

She saw someone inside the plane trying to break the cockpit window to escape. Soon, people got out of their vehicles to try to smash the window from the outside as the fire on the fuselage continued to burn.

Garza’s husband jumped out of their vehicle to help and Garza then saw the door of the plane open. She said three people who looked to be teenagers rushed out, followed by someone who appeared to be a pilot. Another member of the crew tried to pull out a person who seemed to be unconscious.

As smoke billowed from the plane, a firefighter used a small ladder to climb into the aircraft to rescue the remaining passenger, while others shot water out of a hose at the wreckage. Rescuers can be heard calling for a rope as others use rods to hold up the plane door.

Several times, officers helping prop open the door dart away from the plane and double over in coughing fits because of the intense smoke.

“What was worrying me was the fire,” she said. “I was concerned that it could have just exploded at any time.”

This was the third significant aviation accident in as many days. A B-52 bomber crashed Monday during a test flight at Edwards Air Force Base in California and killed all eight people aboard, while on Sunday, 12 people were killed when a plane on a skydiving outing in Missouri crashed.

NetJets said in a statement that the crash involved one of its aircraft and it is working with authorities.

“Our immediate concern is for the well-being of our Crewmembers, our passengers, and their families during this time. We are activating our crisis response and family support teams to support those affected and their loved ones, and we are deploying a team of experts to the site of the accident,” the company said.

NetJets is owned by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway and allows people to buy part ownership in private jets.
