Could the AfD become Germany’s first far-right party to lead a state since WWII?

    September 4, 2026 / 12:43 PM EDT / CBS News

    By Anna Noryskiewicz

Magdeburg, Germany— At first glance, Magdeburg may seem an unlikely stage for a political upheaval of international significance. But this weekend, the city of only about 244,000 people will be at the center of an election that could leave a far-right party in control of a German state for the first time since World War II.

Magdeburg is the capital of the East German state of Saxony-Anhalt — where the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is hoping to rise to power in Sunday’s state election.

Supporters and opponents of right-wing populist movements across Europe and beyond are watching closely to see if the AfD can turn a significant lead in opinion polls into real power.

The latest surveys show the AfD polling at 41%, well ahead of its closest rival, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU), which stood Friday at 23%.

Should the AfD win, it would be an extraordinary breakthrough for a party founded in 2013 largely as a protest movement against the European Union, but which has since shifted far to the right.

    What is the AfD?

Since 2023, the state Office for the Protection of the Constitution has classified the AfD Saxony-Anhalt as a “confirmed far-right extremist” organization.

According to the office, which is the state branch of Germany’s national domestic intelligence agency, the AfD chapter’s core positions violate fundamental principles of Germany’s constitution and are “substantially permeated by the racist ideology of ethnopluralism.”

“Numerous anti-Muslim, racist and antisemitic statements by officials and elected representatives of the state association demonstrate that the AfD in Saxony-Anhalt seeks precisely such an ethnoculturally homogeneous national population and calls for the exclusion of people on the basis of their origin or religion,” the agency says.

AfD Saxony-Anhalt’s main candidate in this election, 35-year-old Ulrich Siegmund, rejects the assessment. In an August interview, he accused the state intelligence agency of being politically weaponized against his party.

“It monitors the opposition,” he said. “It is being used as a political instrument.”

If his party wins power, it would consider either abolishing the state intelligence agency or restructuring it, he added.

Siegmund comes across as composed, charismatic and approachable. But the August cover of the widely-read Der Spiegel magazine branded him “Germany’s most dangerous man,” noting his combination of a winning demeanor, a realistic chance of gaining power of a state, and a radical platform.

The article noted that Siegmund’s close party associates include former officials from the “Heimattreuen Deutschen Jugend,” a neo-Nazi youth organization that was banned in 2009.

Siegmund was at the 2023 “Potsdam meeting,” a gathering of German and other far-right figures where Austrian anti-immigration extremist Martin Sellner presented his “master plan” for “remigration.”

The concept envisioned asylum seekers, non-Germans living legally in the country, and German nationals with immigrant backgrounds who had failed to “assimilate” in the country, all being expelled to live in an unspecified African nation. A version of the plan has become central to AfD Saxony-Anhalt’s platform.

The state party calls for a “deportation and remigration offensive,” with more detention centers to handle people destined for deportation, and advocating for new, tight limits on the number of people permitted to migrate to Germany. Currently there is no cap on the number of immigrants allowed into Germany every year, but the state AfD party has dismissed suggested caps of around 200,000 as far too high.

It may sound familiar to Americans, given the controversy over ICE detentions and the Trump administration’s aggressive deportation policies. But the concept of “remigration” is seen as a step further, given its association with the idea of expelling people living legally in a country, even passport holders.

AfD Saxony-Anhalt has also drawn criticism for the way it refers to Germany’s past.

Hans-Thomas Tillschneider, a leading state AfD politician, has spoken disparagingly of “memorial site stuff” and criticized a “guilt-laden” approach to German history. Such statements resonate in a country where memories of the repression and the orchestrated mass violence of Nazism and the Holocaust have shaped political discourse for at least three generations.

For the AfD, a complicated path to power

Just winning the most votes in Sunday’s election will not be enough to bring the AfD to power in Saxony-Anhalt.

The only guaranteed route to governing on its own and appointing the state’s next premier — the equivalent of a U.S. governor — is to win an absolute majority, taking more than half of the seats in the state parliament.

Polling made that look unlikely as of Friday.

If it wins a large number of seats, even more than any other party, but fails to make the threshold to govern alone, the AfD would have to find another party that also won at least 5% of the votes — and that is willing to partner up in a coalition government.

That could prove a very high hurdle. Germany’s other major parties have long ruled out any cooperation with the AfD.

Siegmund has said himself that he would only lead a full AfD government, ruling out any coalition.

So the party could win the election by a wide margin, but still end up wielding no real power in the state, and there is a recent precedent for that outcome.

The AfD won more seats than any other party in neighboring Thuringia last state election in 2024 — but not a decisive majority. Other parties with lower vote shares agreed to work together to form a coalition without the AfD, so while Thuringia has more lawmakers from the AfD than any other single party, they’re not part of the administration running the state.

    What do the locals say?

Migration has been a dominant topic of debate on the streets of Magdeburg in the run up to the election, fueled by a 2024 attack on its Christmas market. A doctor originally from Saudi Arabia drove his vehicle into the revelers, killing five people.

He was not an Islamic extremist, and called himself a former Muslim. He was, in fact, critical of Islam and had expressed sympathy with the far-right and even the AfD. But despite that, and the fact that the perpetrator had been in the country legally for decades, the case still touched a nerve.

The car that was crashed into people at the Magdeburg Christmas market is seen following the attack in Germany, Dec. 21, 2024. Ebrahim Noroozi/AP

“I feel that the situation is particularly tense following the attack,” one woman, who declined to give her name, told CBS News this week in Magdeburg. “I think that has given the AfD a particular boost.”

Justin, 27, told CBS News that he supports the AfD and believes the party will take action against “uncontrolled migration.”

He said Syrians in particular, some 300,000 of whom were welcomed into Germany as refugees more than a decade ago during their country’s vicious civil war, have failed to adapt to life in the European nation.

“The AfD is good for Germany because they see Germany’s problems,” he said, adding that Syrians in Magdeburg “behave like animals.”

“I am sorry, but they sit on these plastic chairs with their children outside in the middle of the night and they are never quiet,” he said, admitting that, “there were Germans misbehaving” in Magdeburg, too, “but now it’s really bad. I think the AfD sees that and they will help Germans to also get more pension.”

His argument about Syrians is eroded by the fact that tens of thousands of have adapted to life in Germany — including one who came as a refugee in 2015 and has now been mayor of a village in the country’s southwest for several years.

Another local voter, Birgit, sees the party very differently. She told CBS News she was “quite afraid of the AfD,” which she considers “far too extreme.”

A couple out on a date, who described themselves as left-wing former punk rockers in their 40s, told CBS News they were firmly opposed to the AfD and voiced consternation over the party’s stance on migrants.

They argued that foreign workers are and would continue to be indispensable to the health and social services, given Saxony-Anhalt’s aging population.

Another man said he had moved to Magdeburg from western Germany, and if the AfD does manage to take power, he said he couldn’t imagine staying.

As the father of a young girl, he said he was particularly concerned about how an AfD government might change the way Germany’s history, including its darkest chapter of Nazi rule and the Holocaust, is taught in schools.

“There is a lot I could say about this report of John Fetterman’s pathetic behavior as a senator,” Rep. Chris Deluzio, D-Pa., said on X. “But between the laziness, disrespect, and willingness to carry water for a foreign government, it shows us something we already know: this man has no sense of duty.”

“He is not up for the high office he was elected to — and we in Pennsylvania will do something about it in 2028,” he continued.

Behind the scenes, The Wall Street Journal’s report revealed through leaked text messages between Fetterman and his aides that the lawmaker was unwilling to do some of the core functions of the job, like meeting with constituents.

“John Fetterman is a disgrace,” Rep. Brendan Boyle, D-Pa., said on X. “Our state deserves better than a lazy trust fund baby who is too lazy to do the job.”

In one instance, Fetterman was told by an aide that representatives of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) wanted to meet over concerns about Medicaid cuts. Fetterman asked why he had to keep meeting with CHOP, and the aide noted that they were worried about “vaccines and Medicaid cuts.”

“Well, I’m not,” Fetterman responded. “I’m convinced they just want free trips to D.C.”

Another instance came when an aide told Fetterman that there would be a dress code at a funeral for three police officers killed in Pennsylvania last year, and that the service was expected to last for three hours.

“This may be a nonstarter,” Fetterman wrote.

Years before his time in the Senate, Fetterman rose to prominence as a progressive who appeared to emulate the formula laid out by Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., who he backed early on in his runs for the White House.

When Fetterman won his seat in 2022 against Dr. Mehmet Oz, who now runs the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Fetterman ran on a platform of universal healthcare, pro-labor policies and higher tax rates on wealthy Americans — key hallmarks of progressive politics.

Since ascending to the Senate, however, his voting record has shown a more moderate flair, and questions are swirling over whether he will jump ship and join the GOP. He’s bucked his party on several occasions since taking office, too.

DNC VICE CHAIR ATTACKS DEMOCRATIC SEN. JOHN FETTERMAN: ‘YOU’RE A MESS’

Democratic National Committee Vice Chair Malcolm Kenyatta is interviewed by Fox News Digital on the sidelines of the DNC’s summer meeting, on Aug. 26, 2025, in Minneapolis.(Paul Steinhauser – Fox News)

During the government shutdown fight last year, he joined Republicans as Democrats stayed unified in their push to renew lapsing Obamacare tax credits, has become one of the most vocal proponents of Israel, and helped to confirm some of President Donald Trump’s nominees, including Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin — notably, he voted against his old political rival Oz.

The desire to boot Fetterman extends beyond just his colleagues in the Pennsylvania congressional delegation.

Pennsylvania state Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta, who is the vice chair of the Democratic National Committee, has his sights set on Fetterman, too.

“This report is horrifying, but not new to many of us in PA. John barely showed up as Lieutenant Governor and is constantly MIA as our senator,” Kenyatta said on X.

“When he’s not on FOX cheerleading Trump & endless wars, he is attacking the very neighbors who gave him a chance,” he continued. “2028 can’t come soon enough.”

Fetterman did not respond to a request for comment.

After Lindsay Clancy mistrial, what happens next?

The murder trial of Lindsay Clancy ended in a mistrial on Friday, the seventh day of deliberations, after the 12-person jury said it could not come to a unanimous decision about whether Clancy was criminally responsible for killing her three young children at her Massachusetts home in January 2023.

The outcome came after weeks of emotional testimony and days of anxious waiting as the jury argued behind closed doors and repeatedly reported being deadlocked. A note from the foreperson indicated there was a single holdout. Judge William Sullivan sent them back multiple times to keep trying to reach a verdict.

Finally on Friday, when the jury said it was still deadlocked, Sullivan declared a mistrial.

    Here’s what could be next.

Lindsay Clancy will remain in custody

With a mistrial, the conditions for the defendant go back to what they were pretrial, CBS News Boston reported. That means Clancy will remain in custody and under psychiatric care at Tewksbury State Hospital, where she has been held since 2023.

If Clancy had been found not guilty by reason of insanity, she would have remained at a mental health facility indefinitely. If she had been found criminally responsible for the murders, she would have gone to prison.

DA will decide about new trial

Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz will decide if Clancy will be retried for first-degree murder or a lesser charge with a new jury, or possibly consider a plea deal. Cruz could also decide not to retry the case.

In a news conference outside court following the mistrial, Cruz said he would not be announcing those plans immediately. “I’m going to be meeting with our team, and we will address this case further at the appropriate time in the context of an official court proceeding,” he said.

Clancy’s defense attorney, Kevin Reddington, said earlier in the week that he’d be ready to retry the case if needed but believes she is not emotionally prepared to undergo a second trial.

Asked about that comment at a news conference Friday, Reddington said that if a retrial goes forward this fall, “She’ll be ready.”

Reddington has previously criticized Cruz for charging Clancy with first-degree murder, which mandates a jury trial. A lesser charge would have made a bench trial before a judge, or a potential plea deal, possible.

A mistrial is “a gut-wrenching outcome,” said CBS News legal analyst Caroline Polisi. But she believes the prosecution will consider a retrial.

Polisi noted that after Karen Read’s first trial ended in a hung jury in 2024, prosecutors “came right back” and tried it again; Read was acquitted in the retrial.

“I think they’ll likely come back a second time,” Polisi said.

Jessica Levinson, a professor at Loyola Law School and CBS News legal contributor, agreed.

“I think it’s entirely possible that they would move forward with a retrial for a couple of reasons,” Levinson said. “One, sometimes you see a really big swing in juries from one trial to another. Two, you could charge this in a very different way.”

Instead of asking the jury to decide between first-degree murder, second-degree murder, manslaughter, or not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect, she said, “You could see the prosecution bring a much more slimmed-down case. In addition, you could potentially see a plea bargain.”

Prosecution can refine its argument in second trial, legal experts say

Polisi said prosecutors would have the opportunity to rework or refine their strategy if a second trial is held. For example, she suggested, the prosecution might want to rethink its argument that Clancy faked her suicide attempt.

“I would think they would really hone down their case to present it not as, you know, diminishing her mental health state, but acknowledging that she was severely depressed,” Polisi said in an earlier interview. She said the prosecution could refocus on “whether or not she knew the difference between right and wrong, not trying to say it was a fake suicide attempt.”

Both the prosecution and defense will want to poll the jurors who deadlocked, she said, “because that will shape” future decisions and arguments.

“We might see a completely different theory of this case if it gets tried a second time,” Polisi said.

Jennifer Roman, a legal analyst for CBS Boston station WBZ-TV, said both sides in the case will likely be thinking about what they would do differently.

“It’s hard not to look back at a trial and, even on the day of, think, ‘That cross-examination went well’ or ‘I wish I had done that a little bit differently today.’ It’s human nature,” Roman said. “Certainly, both sides have learned from this trial and will do things a little bit differently if there is in fact a second trial.”

Polisi said there are a number of ways in which a second trial could favor the prosecution.

“They get to streamline it — they get to see what they did right and incorrectly in the first trial and sort of refine it. There’s no surprises from the defense,” she said.

“I think that really would be the case here, because the prosecution made some pretty big missteps, I’d say, in this trial. They would have a second chance to sort of alleviate some of those missteps. And I think it would be a much stronger case on a retrial.”

What made jury deliberations so difficult?

It’s not clear what specifically caused the jurors to deadlock because deliberations are secret. Jurors had five options to choose from — not guilty by reason of insanity, not guilty, first-degree murder, second-degree murder or manslaughter — and any verdict would have had to be unanimous.

A key issue in the case was whether Clancy was criminally responsible for the murders of her children or if she was too mentally ill to understand her actions.

Both the prosecution and Reddington agreed that Clancy was mentally ill, but they disagreed about how culpable she was for her actions. The prosecution said Clancy planned the killings and was able to distinguish right from wrong, while the defense argued that she was overmedicated and suffering from postpartum psychosis.

Jurors heard testimony from 85 witnesses during the trial and considered more than 200 pieces of evidence.

The case has drawn widespread attention, with supporters, protesters and counterprotesters showing up at the courthouse, and public debate about the case raging online. Polisi said it’s not surprising to see the jury struggle to come to a decision.

“It’s a microcosm, right? It’s not shocking that we’re at a complete deadlock, because look at everybody else out here,” Polisi said. “Nobody can agree out here, so why would the jury agree?”

Laura Niemi, a psychologist and jury consultant, told CBS News Boston on Monday that the jurors had “a really difficult task.”

“It’s more than understanding like the medical evidence. It’s more than kind of making sense of the conflicting diagnoses. Jurors have to make a coherent story out of all of this,” Niemi said.

Trump promised ‘economic D-Day’ for Iran. So far, actions have come in drips

    2026-09-04T19:51:04.565Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/09/04/politics/trump-economic-d-day-actions-skepticism

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio this week instructed diplomats around the world to tell their host countries they must “systematically identify and sever” ties to Iran, and those with branches of Iranian banks must shut them down immediately.

On Friday, the US Treasury Department announced it was targeting a Turkish bank and its subsidiaries that allegedly serve as “critical financial lifelines” to Iran.

They marked the latest sanctions under “Operation Economic Outcast,” a pressure campaign that President Donald Trump had previewed as “economic D-Day” for Iran.

However, rather than a sweeping, singular assault, the measures have come in drips in the nearly two weeks since it was announced.

Meanwhile, there remains deep skepticism from experts and diplomats that the US will take meaningful action against key Iranian partners like China. They also continue to question the impact the sanctions will have on Tehran, which has withstood decades of economic pressure.

“The Iranians have been handling and evading sanctions for half a century for bloody sake, they can take pretty much anything thrown at them,” a regional source said.

Experts have noted that the impact of sanctions takes time. A former senior State Department official noted that signs of economic strain in Iran, like long gas lines or empty grocery shelves, seem to be “part of what has been happening, and not something new.”

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has disputed the notion that sanctions don’t work and insisted that the US has “never engaged… at this level of intensity.”

Last week, the Treasury Department proposed cutting off the UAE branches of Banque Misr, Egypt’s second largest bank, from the US financial market. It also sanctioned the general manager of the Dubai branch of Bank Melli, Iran’s biggest bank.

Friday’s sanctions hit Turkey’s Golden Global Bank and its subsidiaries, which Treasury claims have “facilitated tens of millions of dollars’ worth of transactions,” including in oil revenues from China, for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Quds Force.”

Daniel Tannebaum, a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council, said “the significance isn’t so much in the scale of the bank.” Rather, “it shows, especially in the run-up to the Trump-Xi bilat in a couple weeks, that there’s other countries, including allies… that the US is willing to make a move at.”

Experts and diplomats who spoke with CNN have cast doubts that the administration will make such a move at China.

“If they go at China, it will be very carefully orchestrated, where there are no surprises,” said Tannebaum, who is also a partner at management consulting firm Oliver Wyman.

Trump administration officials, meanwhile, have suggested that Beijing is being more cooperative than it may seem.

“We have more in common with the Chinese on Iran than we disagree with them on,” Bessent said at an event on the sidelines of the G20 Finance Ministers meeting this week.

There is also skepticism that the US will take significant actions against Pakistan or Oman, who also have trade ties with Iran, given their roles in the diplomacy around the war.

“I think they are trying to be balanced and careful. That’s why they’re targeting small banks now and hoping to freak out the others and again trying to be careful not to jeopardize any hope for the peace deal,” another regional source said.

Bessent said this week that the US has seen “great support around the world” for their latest economic campaign.

“We are speaking to our allies here, who have all come forward, and we have had a great show of support,” he said at the G20.

One diplomatic source described discussions with their country so far as being in the explanatory phase.

In the cable sent earlier this week, Rubio told diplomats to inform their host countries about “Operation Economic Outcast.” For embassies in places like London and Muscat, the diplomats were instructed to stress the imperative that “countries take immediate action to shutter all branches of Iranian banks located in their jurisdictions.”

“The bank branches must go dark – immediately,” said the diplomatic cable, which was seen by CNN.

    CNN’s Kylie Atwood contributed reporting.

Megan Cerullo is a New York-based reporter for CBS MoneyWatch covering small business, workplace, health care, consumer spending and personal finance topics. She regularly appears on CBS News 24/7 to discuss her reporting.

The U.S. has many economies, not just one.

Consider how much the gains in worker pay can vary from city to city. Nationwide, workers in August got a 4.7% bump in gross pay compared to a year ago, while their base pay rose by an average of 3.2%, according to ADP Pay Insights.

Yet wages grew much faster in some urban areas around the country, even far outstripping inflation. In general, those metros had several things in common: healthy job growth, a shortage of workers and higher employee turnover, data from the payroll processor shows.

Wage growth is also often stronger in cities with a higher concentration of manufacturing and financial services firms.

“Sometimes a labor supply shortage, caused by an aging workforce or skills mismatch, can drive up wages,” ADP lead data scientist Liv Wang told CBS News.

Nationwide, wages in August rose at an annual rate of 3.1%, the lowest since May 2021, even as strong payroll gains blew by economists’ forecasts, the Department of Labor said on Friday.

Here are the top 10 metro areas with the fastest wage growth in August, along with the top 10 industries with the fastest wage growth, according to ADP.

Some Democrats fear this controversial alliance could jeopardize their chances in the crucial Michigan Senate race during the midterms, alienating swing voters.

While Americans prepare to mark the 25th anniversary of 9/11, Abdul El-Sayed’s public campaign schedule for that day makes no mention of a remembrance event, but includes a Mexican festival, a farmers market and a county fair.

As of Friday morning, El-Sayed’s campaign website listed staff and volunteers for Grand Rapids’ Fiesta Mexicana, a nearby farmers market and the Allegan County Fair, while El-Sayed himself was scheduled to make a stop on his “Shouldn’t Be This Hard” tour.

After Fox News Digital asked about the lack of a 9/11 remembrance on the public schedule, El-Sayed’s campaign said the Democrat nominee “will be attending a 9/11 remembrance memorial event that day,” though the event was not listed on his campaign website.

The events listed on the campaign schedule have a notably more festive tone.

Fiesta Mexicana, for instance, describes itself as “three days of mariachi, folklórico and forty-some vendors” that uses “music, food, dance and good company” to “make sure Mexican culture is known, understood and celebrated in West Michigan — on our own terms.” El-Sayed’s campaign instructs supporters to “bring some Mexican swag” and “go inside to enjoy the music and get some food.”

The Allegan County Fair, meanwhile, features live entertainment, food, games and rides.

El-Sayed’s campaign pointed out, that of the four events flagged by Fox News Digital — Fiesta Mexicana, the farmers market, the county fair and the candidate’s tour event — the Senate candidate would not be attending two of them, though would not specify which ones.

The campaign did not explain why El-Sayed’s website did not list the 9/11 remembrance memorial event on his list of upcoming events but it did underscore in comment to Fox News Digital that El-Sayed views 9/11 as a horrific moment in history.

“The September 11th terrorist attacks were an evil attack on America’s freedom and he will be joining Michiganders in remembering the 25th anniversary,” El-Sayed’s spokeswoman told Fox News Digital.

The Michigan Senate hopeful has a complicated relationship with 9/11.

Twitch streamer Hasan Piker, whom El-Sayed had campaigned alongside, caused him a headache early in the campaign when a clip of the streamer saying that America “deserved 9/11” resurfaced. El-Sayed called the statement “dumb,” though did not disavow Piker.

Later, old blogs and social media posts where El-Sayed made controversial statements about the terrorist attacks began to surface.

Fox News Digital previously reported that El-Sayed equated 9/11 with Jan. 6 and President Donald Trump with Osama bin Laden on a now private blog. In social media posts, he called on Americans to bring the same outrage to the COVID-19 pandemic that they felt for 9/11 and mourned the deaths of those killed in America’s War on Terror.

WASHINGTON, Sept 4 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to sign an executive order related to ‌beef on Friday, according to two sources familiar with the situation.

One of the sources said the order would pertain to country-of-origin labeling for beef.

Trump is scheduled to sign an executive order behind closed doors at 1:30 p.m. ET (1730 GMT).

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Trump said last week he would look into whether there were too many regulations restricting ranchers from slaughtering their own cattle.

He also signed last week an order to temporarily increase imports of some lower-tariff beef ‌in an effort to bring down consumer beef prices, which have hit record highs this year.

Ranchers and farm groups strongly oppose the plan, which they argue will disadvantage American producers.

Some ranchers have sought mandatory country-of-origin labeling for beef, arguing that would support domestic producers and provide more transparency to consumers. Under current regulations, meat companies can voluntarily add a “Product of USA” label for meat born, raised and slaughtered in the U.S.
