National debt tops $40 trillion after doubling in less than a decade, Treasury data shows

    August 19, 2026 / 4:32 PM EDT / CBS News

The national debt topped $40 trillion, according to Treasury Department data released on Wednesday, representing a fiscal milestone that underscores the federal government’s mounting borrowing and interest costs.

The Treasury Department’s daily financial report shows that the nation’s debt reached $40.05 trillion on August 18, more than double its level in 2017. The federal debt has ballooned because government spending is outstripping revenue, forcing the U.S. to borrow more money to cover the shortfall.

“We’ve been running deficits for the last 26 years, and we’ve basically ignored a lot of the structural challenges that exist in our budget that are very well known,” Michael Peterson, CEO of the nonpartisan Peter G. Peterson Foundation, told CBS News. “It’s clearly been accelerating because, like any debt problem, the longer you ignore it, the worse it gets.”

As the government continues to borrow, interest payments are consuming a larger share of the nation’s spending, creating a compounding effect that further fuels the debt. The U.S. government now spends more on servicing its debt than on national defense or Medicare.

Analysts say the nation’s debt growth isn’t likely to slow. “We’re going the wrong way,” said Dean Baker, the co-founder of the economic think tank Center for Economic and Policy Research. He cited the increase in military spending, which he said has exacerbated the country’s fiscal burden.

The Peterson Foundation estimates that the national debt could reach $50 trillion in six years if the country does not make spending or tax reforms.

What is driving up the federal debt?

Net interest costs, which approached $1 trillion in 2025 and accounted for nearly 14% of the nation’s spending, are only part of the problem.

Several other factors have fueled the national debt, with economists holding differing opinions on the primary drivers.

The number of people collecting benefits from Social Security and Medicare has increased as the U.S. population ages, making the programs more expensive, while other spending has also increased, such as on interest payments.

At the same time, a combination of tax cuts over the last two decades has decreased the nation’s revenue. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that the Trump administration’s One Big Beautiful Bill, passed last year, will add $4.2 trillion to the national debt through fiscal year 2034.

While policy decisions have contributed, the debt problem can’t be tied to one specific administration, Peterson told CBS News.

“Many administrations and many Congresses have taken steps in the wrong direction,” he told CBS News.

Larger economic crises, including the Great Recession of 2008 and the COVID-19 pandemic, have also triggered spikes in the nation’s debt, as the Treasury Department shows.

Analysts told CBS News that the rising federal debt could hinder the country’s ability to handle future economic shocks.

“AI disruption, a recession, global war or any number of other events could quickly push us over the edge from a challenge into a full-blown crisis,” Margaret Spellings, president and CEO of the Bipartisan Policy Center, a Washington, D.C.-based think tank, said in an email.

What does the federal debt mean for you?

The public holds about 80% of the nation’s debt, according to the Peterson Foundation. Of that, more than two-thirds is held by domestic lenders such as mutual funds and the Federal Reserve System, while foreign investors hold the rest.

Taxpayers could also bear the brunt of rising federal debt because as the government issues more Treasury securities to fund government spending, it must offer higher yields to attract investors. That could contribute to higher interest rates for mortgages and other credit products.

“If the Treasury rate is going up, that means your mortgage rate is going up, your car loan is going up, your credit card rates are going up,” Peterson said.

Higher interest payments can also make it more difficult for the federal government to find the money to fund core programs, a phenomenon Peterson referred to as “crowding out.”

“It’s typically called crowding out when the interest costs represent such a big chunk of the budget that it puts downward pressure on every other program across the budget, and puts upward pressure on taxes because you know we need more money in the system to cover these interest costs,” he said.

Not everyone agrees that the nation’s soaring debt could pose an economic threat. Baker, for one, is less concerned about the consequences, noting that a strong U.S. economy should allow the federal government to continue to shoulder the growing financial burden.

The more immediate economic threats facing the U.S. are tariffs and the Iran war’s impact on prices, he said. He also warned that investors could pull their money out of the U.S. if what some believe is an artificial intelligence bubble were to burst.

“If people just become wary of U.S. markets and the U.S. economy, they might pull their money out,” he said. “So I think there is an issue with foreign money leaving the U.S. but the government debt isn’t the biggest factor, and probably not even a major factor.”

El-Sayed reveals he would go ‘step further’ than Sanders on socialist plan for major US industry

El-Sayed said he wanted to ‘take it a step further’ than Bernie Sanders’ public ownership model for a major US industry

Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed said he wanted to “take it a step further” when asked whether he supported Bernie Sanders’ public ownership model for major artificial intelligence companies.

El-Sayed argued for “some system of public control,” days after a top House Democrat rejected suggestions that young socialists are talking about “seizing the means of production.”

Asked during a June 12 appearance on the left-wing “Head in the Office” podcast whether he supported public ownership models for major artificial intelligence companies like one proposed by Sanders, El-Sayed said he wanted to “actually take it a step further.”

EL-SAYED TAUNTS TRUMP, CLAIMS HE’S GOING TO MAKE HIM ‘MAIN CHARACTER OF THE MIDTERMS’

He added that while he agreed “we need public ownership,” he also believed “we need some system of public control.”

El-Sayed did not explicitly call for the government to seize or take ownership of private AI companies, instead describing possible forms of “public control” that included public representation on corporate boards or an oversight body.

U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., stands with Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed after speaking at Mumford High School May 3, 2026, in Detroit, Mich.(Sarah Rice/Getty Images)

“I want to actually take it a step further. I agree that we need public ownership, but I also agree that we need some system of public control. What is the point of democracy if it’s not to protect us from existential risk? And, right now, there is no regulation,” El-Sayed said when asked about public ownership and public control of major AI companies, with the podcast host citing proposals from Sanders.

“I just think it’s really important for us to be thinking what is democratic control over this industry? What does it look like?”

El-Sayed later offered examples of what “public control” could look like, including public representation on corporate boards or a public oversight body over companies, arguing that AI poses potentially “existential” risks requiring greater public oversight.

“Democracy is supposed to fix these problems, and, right now, they’re trying to slip democracy, and we cannot allow that,” El-Sayed continued about the political power tech companies wield in Washington. “And, so, we need leaders who both understand the technological risk and are not bought off by the AI industry itself. It is mission critical right now for our future.”

EL-SAYED AIDE LIKENS GOP OPPONENT’S CAMPAIGN TO ‘KKK CROSS BURNING’ OVER VIDEO WITH FORD PICKUP

El-Sayed’s call to “take it a step further” on public ownership comes as senior Democrats have sought to push back on the idea that the party’s rising socialist wing is seeking government control of the means of production.

Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., recently argued that young Americans who identify as socialists are not embracing socialism in its traditional Marxist sense, asking whether they mean, “I want to socialize the means of production,” before answering, “I don’t think so.”

Raskin has similarly argued that young self-described socialists are primarily seeking “greater equality and opportunity,” rather than embracing concepts such as “dialectical materialism” or the “dictatorship of the proletariat.”

But some of the movement’s most prominent figures have used more explicit language. Mamdani said during a 2021 Young Democratic Socialists of America conference that one of the movement’s firmly held beliefs was the “end goal of seizing the means of production,” while acknowledging it did not then enjoy the same level of public support as other progressive causes.

The June podcast comments are drawing fresh attention as El-Sayed, a progressive who has embraced comparisons to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, seeks to carry that brand of politics into a marquee statewide Senate race.

The resurfaced exchange also comes amid a broader debate over the Democratic Party’s embrace of democratic socialists and how far the movement’s economic agenda extends beyond policies such as universal healthcare and a higher minimum wage.

More than 750 US service members wounded since start of Iran War

The number of US service members wounded since the start of the Iran war has passed 750, according to the Defense Department’s war casualty database.

The Pentagon updated the database on Wednesday, recording more than 50 additional wounded soldiers, as talks between Tehran and DC to end the conflict remain at an impasse.

When totals in The Defense Casualty Analysis System for “Overseas Operations” are combined with totals for Operation Epic Fury, 18 service members have died and 757 have been wounded since the US launched the war against Iran on February 28.

The Defense Department created the “Overseas Operations” category last month in DCAS for service members killed and wounded “starting July 7.” The Pentagon has yet to provide any additional details or specify the conflict in which the casualties have occurred. The July 7 date aligns with the day that President Donald Trump’s administration told Congress that a new conflict with Iran had begun in a War Powers Act notification.

CNN has reached out to the Pentagon for additional clarity on the category.

Wednesday’s updated numbers come weeks after the Pentagon drew scrutiny from media outlets and lawmakers after the killed and wounded numbers decreased in DCAS as Iranian attacks continued. Four deaths and dozens of injuries disappeared from the totals last month before being restored.

The Defense Department said in a social media post at the time that the decreases were due to “temporary data disruptions.”

CNN previously reported that the Pentagon has been slow to disclose wounded troops throughout the conflict with Iran, with officials pointing to security needs.

Trump claimed earlier Wednesday the situation with Iran is “so good” right now, as he’s paused US negotiations with Tehran and the Strait of Hormuz remains a key point of tension in the ongoing war.

US debt crosses $40 trillion threshold after doubling under Trump and Biden

    2026-08-19 20:17:48 UTC / Reuters

    Summary

    • U.S. debt has risen by $11.6 trillion during Trump’s two terms in the White House
    • It increased by $8.4 trillion during Biden’s four-year term
    • Tax cuts have constrained revenues as social safety net, interest costs grow
    • Trump not worried by bond market volatility, says interest rates should fall

WASHINGTON, Aug 19 (Reuters) – Total U.S. debt has topped $40 trillion for the first time, the Treasury Department said on Wednesday, drawing fresh warnings that a fiscal crisis is brewing as ballooning costs for social safety-net programs and interest payments far outstrip revenues held back by tax cuts.

The Treasury’s latest daily cash and debt balances statement showed total public debt outstanding at $40.047 trillion on ‌Tuesday, a total that includes Treasury securities held by the public of $32.266 trillion and intra-governmental debt holdings of $7.782 trillion.

The Reuters Daily Briefing newsletter provides all the news you need to start your day. Sign up here.

The federal government’s IOU has now more than doubled in less than a decade, from $19.95 trillion when President Donald Trump was sworn in for the first time in January 2017. Roughly one-third of that increase occurred during two years of frantic government borrowing to fund the COVID-19 pandemic responses undertaken by Trump and former President Joe Biden, while the fiscal policy choices of both presidents combined with long-running tax-and-spending imbalances account for the rest.

Budget watchdog groups have anticipated crossing the threshold for weeks and issued stark warnings that a full-blown debt crisis could erupt unless lawmakers confront an unsustainable fiscal outlook and raise taxes, cut spending or both.

“Forty trillion dollars of debt doesn’t exist solely on the government’s ledgers; it is felt throughout the economy and finds its way to the pocketbooks of people one way or another,” said Maya MacGuineas, president of the nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget.

“The more we borrow, the more we exacerbate inflation, squeeze out other priorities in the budget, and leave ourselves vulnerable to emergencies at home and turmoil abroad,” MacGuineas said in a statement just after the Treasury data was released.

She said the $40 trillion figure was reached less than five months after debt reached $39 trillion, and has quadrupled in less than 20 years after taking until 1981 to reach $1 trillion for the first time.

“It is staggering how predictable the fiscal decline of a global power can become,” MacGuineas added.

Global U.S. creditors may already be growing wary, with demand from foreign investors holding nearly one third of Treasuries declining over the past year.

Days after a $25-billion auction of 30-year Treasury bonds went off at the highest yield since 2021, yields on so-called long bonds on Tuesday hit their highest levels in nearly two decades as investors demanded greater compensation in the face of hefty U.S. government bond issuance. Yields move inversely to bond prices.

On Wednesday, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent took a bold step to push long bond yields back down, announcing a doubling of buyback sizes for 10- to 30-year Treasuries to at least $4 billion per operation.

Higher Treasury yields at the longer end tend to push up interest rates for mortgages, car and commercial loans. With the mountain of debt showing no signs of abating, Trump on Wednesday repeated his frequent demand for lower rates.

Asked at the White House whether Americans should worry about bond market volatility, Trump said: “I don’t think so at all. I think we have a very powerful country, and we’re powering through these ridiculous interest rates — they’re ridiculous. Look, ‌when our country is strong, interest rates should go down.”

    PANDEMIC SPENDING, AND THEN SOME

The Treasury last week reported the fourth-highest monthly deficit in U.S. history — $432 billion for July — as tariff refunds turned customs receipts negative for the third month in a row and outlays for Social Security and Medicare benefits for seniors continued to grow. The deficit for the first 10 months of fiscal 2026 has already exceeded the total gap for all of fiscal 2025 with two months to go in the current fiscal year.

Trump has largely ignored the dwindling number of fiscal hawks in his Republican Party, championing heavy spending across his two terms. Public debt rose by $7.8 trillion during Trump’s first term, with more than half of it accumulating during the pandemic response over his last nine months in office.

Since Trump took office a second time in January 2025, the U.S. debt load has increased by $3.8 trillion, for total growth of $11.6 trillion across his two terms so far.

Public debt increased by $8.4 trillion during Biden’s term, also marked by heavy COVID-19 recovery spending, but driven as well by big-ticket outlays for infrastructure investment, clean energy subsidies and other priorities championed by his Democratic Party.

The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget estimates that the policy choices of Trump and Biden have increased the federal debt trajectory beyond what would have accumulated under the existing spending statutes when each took office.

For instance, Trump’s landmark second-term legislative package — the One Big Beautiful Bill Act — will add another $4.7 trillion in debt, according to the Congressional Budget Office, the nonpartisan bookkeeper for federal lawmakers.

Trump has branded his second presidency as one focused on cost-cutting, marked by early federal agency job cuts ordered by the non-governmental Department of Government Efficiency. But much of his spending reductions have targeted so-called “discretionary” programs, the smallest portion of the federal budget. The U.S. spends roughly $7 trillion annually, and 60% of it is earmarked for so-called “mandatory” programs, including payments for Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and veterans’ care, that generally grow to keep pace with living costs.

Another $1.1 trillion pays the interest on U.S. borrowing, the cost of which rises as the debt pile grows and as interest rates climb. The 2025 fiscal-year budget marked the first time debt service costs exceeded Pentagon funding. In the first 10 months of the 2026 fiscal year, interest costs have eclipsed Medicare healthcare outlays to become the second-largest line item in the federal budget, behind the Social Security pension system.

The U.S. is spending more to fund the retirement and healthcare costs of the “baby boom” generation, straining the trust funds behind Social Security and Medicare even as payroll and income tax revenues fall short of covering federal costs.

Blerim Skoro, center, with fellow inmates in prison in the early 2000s. He says he gleaned intelligence for the FBI on several who were later convicted in terrorism-related cases.

Blerim Skoro, at right, during the period when he says he was working undercover between 2007 and 2009.

Blerim Skoro is seen in a photo he says was taken while he was working undercover between 2007 and 2009.

He spied for the U.S. in the war on terror. Now ICE wants to deport him.

    August 19, 2026 / 7:05 PM EDT / CBS News

The Trump administration is trying to deport a self-described CIA spy who infiltrated al Qaeda after 9/11 and won his permission to live in the U.S. by helping convict terrorists.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested Blerim Skoro, a Kosovo-born father of three, outside an immigration office in New Jersey where he was renewing his paperwork earlier this month.

His lawyers have filed in federal court to halt his deportation, saying Skoro, 55, was promised residency after years of significant work as a “CIA agent.”

Skoro, a Staten Island, New York, cab driver who has an American wife and children, was granted a deferral of removal in 2022 due to the risk of his capture and torture by terrorists if he were deported.

The ruling was due in part to Skoro’s help securing the arrests of al Qaeda, al Shabaab and Hezbollah members, his lawyers claim.

Blerim Skoro, in a recent video call from ICE detention. Susan Skoro

Now he fears that the government, for which he claims to have put his life on the line, is going to send him back to Kosovo — he says into the hands of those who want him dead.

“I never thought they were going to betray me like this,” he told CBS News in a phone interview from Elizabeth Detention Center, in New Jersey. “Please, if I die, I should die in this country so my kids can bury me.”

Skoro’s relationship with U.S. intelligence officials began when he was jailed for trafficking drugs in 2000, FBI documents show.

He says he was struggling to make ends meet supporting his children and refugee parents after the family fled the Kosovo conflict in the 1990s. He got caught transporting heroin overseas for an Albanian criminal gang.

Raised a Muslim, he was welcomed by a group of Islamic radicals in a Manhattan prison where he began serving his drug trafficking sentence, FBI files that list him as a confidential informant show. After 9/11, he says the CIA approached him to exploit the connection.

While incarcerated at FCI Allenwood, a federal prison in Pennsylvania, between 2002 and 2006, Skoro says he gleaned intelligence for the FBI on terrorists including Faysal Galab of the Lackawanna Six, which federal agents described as America’s first homegrown terrorist sleeper cell; Randall “Ismail” Royer of the Virginia jihad network, convicted of organizing violence against U.S. troops overseas; and Hezbollah member Junuz Fuaz.

Heavily redacted FBI records from 2004 obtained by CBS News list Skoro as an informant in an investigation targeting Osama bin Laden, at times providing “actionable” and “reliable” information including details of a “Syrian training camp.”

Skoro believed he would receive a reduced sentence for his work, but was instead deported to Kosovo in 2007 and claims he was told by the CIA to infiltrate al Qaeda from the Balkans — only returning to the U.S. in 2014, he said in a previous legal declaration for his immigration case.

Blerim Skoro, at right, during the period when he says he was working undercover between 2007 and 2009. “The Accidental Spy,” Cambridge Picture Company

Skoro claims he was undercover in the terrorist group from 2007 to 2009 for the CIA, traveling to an ISIS camp in Syria and working in Lebanon, Jordan, Pakistan and Egypt as well as his home country.

Photos and videos he took during that time show him in apparent Middle Eastern settings with known terrorists. The footage was used in a 2024 documentary, “The Accidental Spy,” and in an episode of The Shawn Ryan Show on YouTube last year.

Blerim Skoro is seen in a photo he says was taken while he was working undercover between 2007 and 2009. “The Accidental Spy,” Cambridge Picture Company

He appears to have been directly involved in the arrest of Brooklyn terrorist Betim Kaziu, who was sentenced to 27 years in prison after attempting to buy weapons for the Somali terrorist group al Shabaab to target U.S. troops stationed abroad.

In his December 2020 declaration, Skoro wrote that he secretly called his CIA handler to give his location while hosting Kaziu at his Kosovo apartment, leading to the terrorist’s arrest with a rifle, ammunition and grenades in July 2009.

Skoro shared emails with CBS News between him and a man he claims was his CIA handler, “Chris,” dated Sept. 24, 2009, which say: “I was very glad to see our friend Kaziu is now back in the States.” The CIA did not respond to a request for comment.

Skoro claims he helped intercept shipments of uranium to Kosovo, preventing a possible “dirty bomb” plot, and that starting in April 2015, after he was back in the U.S., he offered more intelligence to the FBI and New York Police Department when he says he was contacted by an ISIS recruiter.

Skoro’s attorney, Joshua Dratel, told CBS News that for the past decade his client has led a “completely law-abiding, productive life with his family after a harrowing experience that he performed for the United States with great courage and skill.”

His habeas corpus petition filed in federal court after his arrest earlier this month says he “worked for the CIA, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Drug Enforcement Agency over the course of nearly a decade,” and claims he performed “devoted and heroic work as a United States law enforcement agent.”

His wife, Susan Skoro, was with him at the Elizabeth, New Jersey, immigration office when he was arrested on Aug. 3.

She said when he checked in at the front desk, ICE officers descended on him, bundled him into a room, then took him away in a car.

“They betrayed him. He’s done his time. He almost lost his life, and nobody gives a s**t. He deserves a pardon,” she said.

“He can’t get deported anywhere safely. We’re always looking over our shoulders.”

The Kosovar first came to America in 1994 claiming asylum after deserting the then-Yugoslav Army, having witnessed rape and child murder by soldiers, he said.

After years of self-described espionage on behalf of the U.S., Skoro says his cover was eventually blown and he was shot in the leg during an assassination attempt in Kosovo, prompting him to flee and reenter the U.S. illegally via Canada in 2014.

He fell into ICE’s hands in 2016 after the NYPD arrested him for using his daughter’s student discount public transit card, sparking a lengthy immigration battle.

In November 2022, a federal judge barred the government from deporting Skoro back to Kosovo due to the risk of his torture and murder there, under the international treaty known as the Convention Against Torture, but stopped short of granting him legal residency.

Bhairavi Desai, executive director of Skoro’s taxi union, said she was “shocked” to discover the legal residency of the “impressive, funny and kind” driver was on shaky ground.

“I thought that given the work that he did on the war on terror on behalf of the CIA, he would have already had permanent status here,” Desai told CBS News.

“It just seems really brutal to have used him in this way and now to discard him.”

Skoro’s lawyers filed a habeas corpus petition on Aug. 4, arguing that thanks to his 2022 court-awarded protection, ICE must get permission from a judge before deporting him — something the agency failed to do.

This month ICE deported a group of Mexican nationals who had been under the same protection as Skoro — a deferral of removal under the Convention Against Torture — after the State Department received assurances from the Mexican government that the deportees would not be harmed.

Their deportation proceedings also began without a federal court filing, The New York Times reported last week.

“This is yet another case that concerns whether Immigration and Customs Enforcement (‘ICE’) can — without notice, reason, or process — arbitrarily arrest and indefinitely detain a noncitizen who has been granted Withholding of Removal under the Convention Against Torture,” Skoro’s amended habeas corpus petition, filed on Aug. 17, said.

“The answer to this question is resoundingly no. This holding has been confirmed by opinions across the country.”

U.S. District Court Judge Robert Kirsch ordered the government to respond by Thursday.

ICE acknowledged CBS News’ request for comment but did not provide a response. The CIA and FBI did not respond.

“Today, I am announcing the MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN AGAINST ANY COUNTRY! “Oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, front companies — It all needs to stop NOW,” he continued. “You know who you are. This will be an ECONOMIC D-DAY, and we need all of our Allies to stand with the United States of America to isolate, and defeat, the Iran threat.
