Firings now underway at Office of Director of National Intelligence, source says

    2026-06-22T21:32:50.072Z / CNN

    • Firings have begun at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, a source tells CNN.
    • Bill Pulte, the acting director of national intelligence, had been considering cutting jobs after Trump asked him to downsize the office and revert staff to home agencies.
    • Top Democrats warned the cuts risk jeopardizing an organization created after 9/11 to prevent future terrorist attacks.

AI-generated summary was reviewed by a CNN editor.

The large-scale cuts that President Donald Trump’s acting director of national intelligence had been considering imposing at his own office started on Monday, a source familiar with the matter told CNN.

“The deep state firings have begun,” the source said, declining to give details on how many jobs had been cut.

Sources had previously told CNN that Bill Pulte, Trump’s pick to serve as director of national intelligence in an acting capacity, was looking at cutting hundreds of jobs at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI). Last week, Pulte showed up to his new job a day early after asking for a list of every employee in the office, sources told CNN, catching even outgoing director Tulsi Gabbard off-guard.

A source familiar with the matter told CNN that the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC) and the National Counterintelligence and Security Center were expected to be hit hard by the cuts.

All offices were asked to provide a list ranking their personnel by Monday, according to two sources familiar with the matter, who associated the request with Pulte’s mandate to carry out mass firings.

The firings came as top Democrats on the Senate and House Intelligence Committees sent a letter on Monday to Pulte warning him of the risks of making large cuts to the workforce.

Sen. Mark Warner and Rep. Jim Himes wrote, “We are concerned by reports that you intend to fire or place on leave hundreds of Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) officers as soon as this week.”

“While there is room to consider responsible reductions to ODNI’s workforce, any large cuts would follow on a substantial downsizing that has already occurred in 2025 and risk jeopardizing the mission of an organization explicitly created after 9/11 to prevent any future such terrorist attack,” the lawmakers wrote.

They continued, “Given your lack of experience within the Intelligence Community, it is difficult to imagine that in such a short amount of time you have already developed fully informed views as to how to shrink ODNI without incurring risks to national security. Making significant structural changes to ODNI, to include a reduction in force, is not an appropriate course of action for anyone in an acting capacity, let alone without consultation with Congress, and you should refrain from doing so.”

When asked about the firings, a White House official pointed to Trump’s recent post on Truth Social in which he telegraphed “downsizing” in the office.

“I have named William Pulte to be Acting Director of National Intelligence, who will take over on June 19th, and have asked him to execute the immediate and needed downsizing of the office, reverting staff to their home agencies,” Trump wrote.

CNN has reached out to ODNI for comment.

Pulte was in the Oval Office as Trump signed executive orders on Monday. When he showed up to work a day early last week, he met with lawyers and staffers.

As director of national intelligence, Pulte oversees 18 intelligence agencies. His appointment irked some of Trump’s closest advisers and allies and caused significant consternation on Capitol Hill, where lawmakers raced to try to confirm Jay Clayton, now the US attorney in Manhattan, to the position permanently, only to have Trump abruptly end Clayton’s participation in a confirmation hearing.

Trump has previously said he wanted Pulte in the role only temporarily, but it is unclear how long that might be. Gabbard had used the post in part to hunt for evidence of voter fraud around the 2020 election that Trump lost, and some fear Pulte will escalate those efforts.

When she served in the post, Gabbard had dozens of photos of herself posted throughout the corridors of the DNI offices in northern Virginia. Two sources told CNN those photos had all been removed as of Monday. The photos were shot by her husband, who is a photographer.

A Chicago priest told President Donald Trump to “shut up” following his social media post about a violent Juneteenth weekend that saw at least six people killed and more than 30 others wounded across the city.

Father Michael Pfleger scolded Trump as Chicago community leaders on Monday called for a city agency to tackle gun violence prevention following the weekend’s bloodshed.

From 6 p.m. Friday through 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Chicago had 24 shootings resulting in 39 victims, six of them fatal, according to the Chicago Police Department.

On Sunday, Trump remarked on Chicago’s crime woes in a Truth Social post, suggesting that federal forces be sent into the city.

“Lots of Killing going on in Chicago. 22 people shot, at least 4 Dead,” Trump wrote. “Why isn’t Governor Pritzker calling me for help. I could make Chicago a safe City in ONE MONTH, in ONE YEAR, it would be one of the safest!!! D.C. went from one of the worst, to one of the safest cities in the U.S. President DJT.”

On Monday, Pfleger, a prominent South Side priest at St. Sabina Catholic Church, criticized Trump for highlighting the violence.

“I hear this morning on the news that Donald Trump said he wants to send people,” he said. “He’ll solve the gun violence in a month. First of all, the man lies every day.”

“The reflecting pool was good for 50 years,” Pfleger added. “And Iran was going to be solved in a month. Shut up, Donald. Just send money and restore the money you took away from gun violence prevention for the city of Chicago and across this country. Give the money back now.”

In response to the violence, community groups, faith leaders, and city officials gathered Monday morning at City Hall to support creating a Department of Gun Violence Prevention. The proposed department would focus entirely on reducing gun violence and helping coordinate violence prevention programs across the city, FOX 32 reported.

OUR LEADERS ABANDONED CHICAGO. TRUMP IS RIGHT: IT’S TIME TO CALL IN THE GUARD

State and city leaders have opposed federal intervention, saying they prefer investments in community-level crime prevention programs.

“President Trump’s bold actions in cities like D.C. and Memphis have dramatically reduced violent crime – local Democrat leaders in Chicago should see the President’s incredible results and be begging him to do the same in Chicago,” White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson told Fox News Digital. “Chicago residents and visitors would benefit tremendously from the President’s successful efforts to drive down crime and make American cities safe again.”

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson on Monday said he wished that Trump would “follow Chicago’s lead and invest in Black America,” saying the administration has made cuts to agencies and programs that make communities safer, including slashing funding for education, housing, and health care.

“It’s unfortunate that this president has worked overtime to literally defund the efforts that create safer communities,” Johnson said.

“If you look at Donald Trump’s Black agenda, he promises to do all the things that I’m doing, but he’s failed to do it,” the mayor added, referring to the hiring of more young people, expanded mental health support services, and investing in more affordable homes.

Sen. Dan Sullivan’s same-name challenger sues to stay on ballot

    2026-06-22T22:42:56.707Z / CNN

    AP—

A man with the same name and party affiliation as Alaska Republican US Sen. Dan Sullivan on Monday challenged a decision by a top state elections official to disqualify his candidacy and remove him from the August primary ballot.

A court filing, on behalf of the challenger Sullivan by his attorneys, said the decision by Division of Elections Director Carol Beecher disqualifying him violates state and federal law. It asks that he be placed on the ballot. Sullivan, a retired teacher from the small fishing community of Petersburg, has maintained that he’s a qualified candidate for US Senate and that election officials lacked a legal basis to boot him from the ballot.

The US Constitution lays out three exclusive qualifications for US Senate, addressing age, citizenship and residency, his attorneys wrote.

“Nothing in Alaska law regulates in any way the private motivations that draw individuals to declare or campaign for office,” the filing by attorneys Jeffrey Robinson, Bryn Pallesen and Zoe Eisberg states.

Sullivan’s entrance into the race, days before the June 1 filing deadline, drew condemnation from Sen. Sullivan and the National Republican Senatorial Committee. They called the challenger a sham candidate and alleged he was working with Democrats to boost Democratic former US Rep. Mary Peltola’s chances in the race. Peltola’s campaign and state Democrats have denied the allegation, as has the challenger.

Sen. Sullivan and Peltola are the highest-profile contenders in a race with more than a dozen candidates. It’s one of the most prominent US Senate races in this year’s midterm elections — one both parties consider crucial to their efforts to control the chamber.

Steve Kirch, a spokesperson for the election division, said the agency had no comment and does not discuss “ongoing reviews, investigations or related proceedings.” Beecher has previously noted that ballots are due to be printed Sunday.

On June 15, a week after Republican Lt. Gov. Nancy Dahlstrom announced an investigation into the challenger Sullivan’s run, Beecher disqualified him. She concluded that his declaration of candidacy “was not filed in order to declare an actual good-faith candidacy for the office of United States Senator, but was instead filed with a purpose to confuse or mislead and to thereby compromise the ballot’s fairness or neutrality.”

In announcing an investigation, Dahlstrom cited “credible allegations” that Sullivan declared his candidacy “in coordination with another candidate and campaign” with an intent to confuse and “manipulate” voters. But in removing the challenger from the ballot, Beecher did not mention finding any evidence of alleged coordination with Peltola or Democratic Party officials.

The challenger Sullivan, when asked in an interview with the Associated Press earlier this month whether he’d had any contact with Peltola’s campaign, responded: “zero, none, zilch.”

Beecher said she based her decision on factors including that he had registered to vote as Daniel J. Sullivan Jr. and in conjunction with his candidacy changed his party affiliation to Republican. She cited similarities between his campaign website and the senator’s, and his work with a consultant whose clients have included some Democrats.

The form congressional candidates in Alaska complete asks them how they would like to be referred to on the ballot and their preferred party affiliation.

Beecher said she acted in line with a regulation that says a candidate’s name may not appear on a ballot with academic or professional titles or “in a manner that is confusing or misleading to voters or compromises the fairness or neutrality of the ballot.”

In response to questions from Democratic state Rep. Andrew Gray, legislative attorney Andrew Dunmire last week said the regulation cited by Beecher does not forbid placing Sullivan’s name on the ballot. He said the elections division could comply with it by designing the ballot in a way that allows voters to distinguish between both Sullivans.

It’s a position echoed by the attorneys for the challenger Sullivan.

The challenger initially had been certified and listed on the state’s candidate list as Dan J. Sullivan. The senator was listed as Dan S. Sullivan and denoted as the incumbent.

Alaska has open primaries in which the top four vote-getters, regardless of party affiliation, advance to the ranked-choice general election.

2 killed, including police officer, in shooting in Montreal

    June 22, 2026 / 5:50 PM EDT / CBS/AFP

Two people, including a police officer, were killed Monday in a shooting in Montreal, police in the Canadian city said. The gunman was also killed.

There was no immediate word on the motive of the attack, which took place in an area of the Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood that has kosher restaurants and supermarkets frequented by Montreal’s large Jewish community. The area includes a supermarket, shops and a residential building.

“It is with immense sadness that we confirm the death of one of our police officers in the line of duty,” Montreal police said in a statement posted on X. Police separately announced that a civilian and the suspect had been killed, while also urging residents to avoid the area.

Police said the incident began around 11:30 a.m. ET. Police swarmed the apparent scene of the shooting and a police helicopter flew overhead.

Fady Dagher, chief of the Montreal Police Service, told reporters he didn’t know the identity of the civilian who was killed or if they were Jewish. Dagher also could not confirm who killed the civilian. Dagher said the suspect was “shot right away. But the other person, I don’t have the details yet.”

Public broadcaster Radio Canada said another officer was seriously wounded. “We are all behind her,” Dagher said of the injured officer during a Monday afternoon news conference.

The officer who was killed was not immediately identified, but Dagher said he was a “great, great, great police officer” who was “very passionate.”

“It’s a very, very sad day. It’s a nightmare,” Dagher said, adding this was the first time SPVM, the Montreal police agency, had lost an officer in the line of duty since 2002.

Dagher said there was no ongoing threat and the community was safe. He said he didn’t have details on the possibility that the shooter or someone else called 911 to lure police officers into an ambush.

“I don’t think it was police target, but maybe we’ll see what the investigation would tell us,” he said.

The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), a prominent Canadian civil society group, said it was “closely monitoring the situation.”

“As we await more details about the nature of this horrifying incident, we urge community members to exercise vigilance,” CIJA said.

Quebec Premier Christine Frechette said she was “deeply shaken by the tragic events.”

“It is essential to allow the authorities to do their work and to avoid speculation,” Frechette added.

    2026-06-22T23:07:28.995Z / reuters.com

US judge blocks Trump administration SNAP restrictions on soda, candy

    2026-06-22T23:07:28.995Z / reuters.com

WASHINGTON, June 22 (Reuters) – A federal judge in Washington, D.C., on Monday blocked the Trump administration from preventing food stamp recipients in five states from using their benefits to buy sugary foods and drinks.

U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson

ruled that the U.S. Department of Agriculture lacked the authority under federal law to approve state requests to bar recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, from using benefits to buy sugary foods and drinks. She sided with five plaintiffs who argued the restrictions would undermine their access to food.

The USDA has approved “food restriction” waivers in 23 states allowing them to restrict SNAP participants from using their benefits to buy products such as soda and candy. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. have endorsed the waivers as part of the “Make America Healthy Again” (MAHA) movement.

SNAP, commonly known as the food stamp program, provides monthly benefits to 42 million low-income Americans, and is administered by the USDA in partnership with state governments.

“The federal defendants and the states may have a genuine desire to improve the health of SNAP households by encouraging healthy choices at the store, and they can take lawful steps to meet those goals,” Jackson said. “But what they cannot do is violate the law and their own regulations along the way.”

The USDA defended the policy and signaled it would continue pursuing restrictions on the use of SNAP benefits for certain foods.

“The idea that taxpayer funds should not be used to purchase junk food should not be controversial,” a USDA spokesperson said in a statement. “USDA will not be backing down from the fight to Make America Healthy Again, including for families and communities reliant on SNAP.”

The plaintiffs — who live in Colorado, Iowa, Nebraska, Tennessee and West Virginia — said in their March lawsuit that they or family members rely on the restricted foods to manage health conditions such as diabetes and allergies, or to obtain energy boosts needed to conduct their daily lives.

They asked the court to block the restrictions in their respective states.

“The court’s ruling is a major step in restoring essential food assistance to the millions of families that rely on SNAP nationwide,” said Katharine Deabler-Meadows, an attorney for the plaintiffs at the National Center for Law and Economic Justice.

In Monday’s ruling, Jackson said the USDA could approve waivers only for limited purposes allowed under U.S. law such as improving the efficiency of the SNAP program.

“Improving the health and diet of SNAP recipients is not included,” Jackson said.
