President Donald Trump congratulated conservative attorney and businessman Abelardo de la Espriella on becoming president of Colombia Monday at the White House. Yet while he holds a slim lead and is the favorite to win over left-wing Senator Ivan Cepeda, authorities have yet to officially certify the result.

With 99.9% of votes counted, de la Espriella led with 49.7% to Cepeda’s 48.7%. De la Espriella, known to his supporters as “El Tigre,” dominated in the country’s mountainous interior and the vote-rich state of Antioquia, while Cepeda won in the capital Bogotá and performed well in coastal regions, following trends of recent presidential elections.

Cepeda has challenged the results, citing irregularities at thousands of polling stations. Nonetheless, overturning the election would be unprecedented in Colombian history.

If de la Espriella does hold out, it will mirror a continent-wide rightward shift seen in recent electoral results in Chile, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Peru, where conservative Keiko Fujimori appears poised to win the presidency.

Donald Trump congratulated de la Espriella during a signing at the White House on Monday. Trump told reporters that, “He called me last night, and he thanked me for the endorsement. He won. He won the election.” In response to a question on relations between the U.S. and Colombia, Trump asserted that things would be “Much better. It’ll be better. He’s going to be a great president.”

The election featured two candidates representing polar opposites of the Colombian political spectrum. De la Espriella, known as ‘El Tigre’ by his supporters, has enjoyed the enthusiastic backing of Donald Trump, promised a return to the law-and-order approach of former President Alvaro Uribe, and pledged an aggressive military campaign against guerrilla groups and criminal organizations, while Cepeda vowed to continue the negotiation-based strategy of Petro, a longtime political ally.

Ivan Cepeda is a longtime figure on the Colombian left, and served as senator for 12 years, following a four-year stint in the Chamber of Representatives. His father, Manuel Cepeda, was a prominent figure in the Colombian Communist Party, and was assassinated in 1994 during a particularly bloody era in Colombia’s internal conflict.

The first round of the election, held on May 31, saw de la Espriella win 43.7% of the vote, to Cepeda’s 40.9%, with right-wing Senator Paloma Valencia placing a distant third, at 6.9%.

On Sunday evening, Secretary of State Marco Rubio congratulated de la Espriella on the result, saying, “The Trump Administration looks forward to working closely with your incoming administration to advance regional security cooperation, end illegal immigration to the United States.”

COLOMBIAN PRESIDENT PETRO THREATENS MILITARY RESPONSE AFTER TRUMP WARNS COLOMBIA MAY BE NEXT TARGET

While the issues driving American and Colombian politics remain considerably distinct, de la Espriella’s insurgent outsider campaign emulated Trump’s in many ways, particularly in the sense that neither held elected nor appointed office prior to winning the presidency, launching successful campaigns almost entirely outside the existing party structure.

The defining safety and security issue set de la Espriella on a winning course, as he honed something of a strongman image to forcefully critique the Petro administration’s policy of peace through negotiation with armed groups in opposition to the Colombian government.

It is widely believed that Petro’s negotiation-based approach and restraint with respect to military action has allowed such groups as the ELN (National Liberation Army), and various dissident elements of the FARC to regroup, boost recruitment and regain control of key territory and drug trafficking routes.

De la Espriella promised a return to an aggressive military campaign to reclaim territory from terrorist groups and cartels, and pledged to build “mega-prisons”, citing the policies of El Salvador’s Nayib Bukele as a model for eradicating criminal groups.

A de la Espriella administration will also likely mark a return to free-market economics, decreased governmental intervention in the economy, and a renewed push to lower taxes.

A strengthened U.S.-Colombia relationship is also a certainty, following an era of considerable tensions between Petro and Trump, which led to a series of acrimonious social media exchanges. Historically, Colombia was the U.S.’ strongest ally in the region, but the relationship has weakened considerably under the tenure of Petro.

Political analysts will also be closely watching the dynamic between Colombia and Venezuela. De la Espriella is likely to follow the Trump administration’s lead in Bogotá’s approach to the new Delcy Rodriguez administration, demanding a timeline for free and fair elections, and calling on the Venezuelan government to aggressively pursue the ELN Marxist guerrilla group in border regions where it has long sought refuge, and had an allegedly close relationship with former dictator Nicolás Maduro.

Trump says proof of his allegations that vandals cut Reflecting Pool paint will be provided in court

    June 22, 2026 / 8:20 PM EDT / CBS News

Washington — President Trump on Monday said proof will be provided in court of his allegations that vandals “cut” a massive slit in the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, which he claims is the reason the paint is peeling on the recently renovated but algae-plagued project.

In an exchange with CBS News senior White House correspondent Ed O’Keefe, Mr. Trump insisted that vandals, rather than questionable craftsmanship, are responsible for the enduring problems following the $14.7 million sealant job. The president claimed vandals cut a 350-foot slit in the pool between the World War II Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial. Five people have been arrested for vandalism related to the Reflecting Pool, and five additional individuals were issued federal citations, according to the U.S. Park Police, although neither the company behind the project nor the U.S. Park Service has said a cut slit was responsible for the peeling.

Asked if he had proof, such as photos or video, that vandals used a knife to cut a massive slit in the pool, Mr. Trump responded: “Well, let’s put it this way, when you have a 350, I think it’s 350, not 250, when you have a 350-foot slit, from one end to the other, you think that’s proof? You think that’s proof?”

O’Keefe noted that reporters had been to the site and found no evidence of a slit.

“Well, you’d have to go see the Parks Department. They’ll show it to you, or see, see the secretary, but I saw it,” Mr. Trump said, likely referencing Interior Secretary Doug Burgum. “They cut it, they cut it very violently. The same thing with the floor, they cut it, and then they lifted it. They pulled it, and that’s what it is.”

After defending the project, the president said, “We also have pictures.”

O’Keefe asked the president for evidence of his claims.

“Yeah, at the right time you’ll see it,” Mr. Trump said. “You’ll see it in court. You’ll see it in court, but all you have to do is call the Parks Department, call the Department of Interior.”

The president also suggested someone may have placed fertilizer in the water to create the algae that teams have been attempting to clear.

“If you put fertilizer in the water, you get algae, but somebody said they might have put fertilizer, they did something to create the algae,” the president said, again without providing evidence for his claims.

CBS News has reached out to the National Park Service and the Department of the Interior. So far, there’s been no response.

Atlantic Industrial Coatings, which received a no-bid contract to install the sealant on the floor of the Reflecting Pool, told CBS News there are “some areas” that “require repairs.”

“These areas are a very small part of the massive 7-acre project, and do not indicate a failure of the liner,” the company said. “These repairs can not be made until the pool is drained. As soon as it’s feasible for the park, the pool will be drained and AIC will be back to make those needed repairs as part of the warranty.”

WASHINGTON, June 22 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday ordered a push to build a powerful quantum computer for scientific research and speed efforts to protect government ‌systems from related cyber threats, bolstering U.S. efforts in its race with China for a technology that could upend science and cybersecurity.

“We believe this can happen by 2028,” Michael Kratsios, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, said in a call previewing the moves and referring to the quantum computer.

Trump signed two executive orders, one of which seeks to protect government computers against quantum computer-fueled cyberattacks by setting a goal of migrating key government computing systems to post-quantum cryptography by 2030 or 2031.

Quantum computers use the laws of quantum physics to process information in ways that can solve certain complex problems far faster than even today’s supercomputers. They could unscramble the encryption that protects computers from hacking, raising fears of aggressive cyberattacks.

The orders underscore the importance the Trump administration places on securing U.S. leadership in the quantum race against China – which could fuel advances in artificial intelligence, materials science and chemistry – while also protecting against the cybersecurity threats posed by the ‌technology.

The order also calls for the Pentagon to deploy quantum sensors by 2028. Such sensors can help aircraft navigate in war zones where global positioning systems have been disrupted and, when put in satellites, could also be used to detect underground activity such as the construction of tunnels or missile silos from space.

“There’s lots of interesting things quantum sensing can bring before quantum computing,” said Matthew Kinsella, CEO of Infleqtion , who attended the signing of the order in the Oval Office. “It’s possible to meet these types of timelines.”

Last month, the Commerce Department announced it would take $2 billion in equity stakes across nine quantum-computing companies, including a new IBM (IBM.N), opens new tab venture.

One of the orders also aims to strengthen international cooperation on intellectual property protections and supply chain security measures “in light of competitors and adversaries looking to undermine U.S. economic and national security,” Kratsios said.

Senate passes housing bill in bid to ease supply crunch, high costs

    • Summary
    • Companies
    • The bill now goes to the House of Representatives for final passage
    • It would cap large Wall Street firms at 350 single-family homes
    • A pilot program would expand access to mortgages of $100,000 or less

WASHINGTON, June 22 (Reuters) – The U.S. Senate passed a bipartisan affordable housing bill on Monday as Congress attempts to finish work on it by the end of this week and ‌clear the way for President Donald Trump to sign the legislation into law.

The measure is designed to increase the availability of affordable single-family homes at a time when high consumer prices are voters’ main worry ahead of November midterm elections. The bill now goes to the House of Representatives for final passage.

Jumpstart your morning with the latest legal news delivered straight to your inbox from The Daily Docket newsletter. Sign up here.

Here are five important elements of the legislation, called the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act:

AIMING TO FIX A HOUSING SHORTAGE

The United States has been struggling with a shortage of affordable housing for years. The causes range from outdated regulations pushing up the cost of home-building to the 2008 financial crisis that has left a lasting mark, especially in southeastern states, the industrial Midwest and parts of the Southwest.

There are varying estimates on the number of new homes needed, from 1.5 million to 7.3 million.

PLACING RESTRAINTS ON LARGE, INSTITUTIONAL INVESTORS

The legislation would restrict the number of single-family homes that Wall Street investment firms could control to 350 per firm. This latest version of the bill deleted a Senate provision that would have forced those investors to sell off the holdings within seven years.

Proponents of the cap argue large investors help pump up prices by outbidding individual buyers.

    LEGISLATING SPEEDIER PERMITTING

Environmental reviews for construction projects would be waived or sped up, and more financing would be freed through federal block grants to states. A U.S. Department of Agriculture rural housing program would be revamped.

Overall, ‌the bill is a compilation of 36 housing measures passed under one bill by the Senate in March and 11 by the House in May.

    EYEING POLITICAL RAMIFICATIONS

Trump and his fellow Republicans campaigned hard in 2024 on a promise of tackling inflation and the resulting high cost of living. The opposite has occurred.

The annual rate of inflation in the United States was 4.2% for the 12 months ending in May, the highest in over three years, largely due to higher energy costs stemming from the U.S. war on Iran. Even with a potential peace deal, it could take a while for energy and related prices to come down.

The average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage is now at 6.47%, up from 6.11% in mid-March.

With the midterm election campaigns now heating up, Republicans and Democrats want to be able to have something tangible to show they are trying to address voters’ demands with this housing bill.

    EXPANDING THE POOL OF BUYERS

With the average first-time home buyer now 40 years old, according to backers of the bill, the goal is to help younger people get into the housing market.

A pilot program would increase access to small-dollar mortgages with principal balances of $100,000 or less, for example.

Senate Banking Committee Chairman Tim Scott, a Republican from South Carolina, said the bill would “lower costs, expand housing supply, cut red tape.”

U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, the senior Democrat on the committee, called it “the biggest housing bill in more than 30 years.”

    blob:https://www.cbsnews.com/b1da0b74-41c7-42dc-a2d2-8d0e83ff9944

Coke and Pepsi are rolling out QR codes linked to ingredient info

    June 22, 2026 / 5:31 PM EDT / CBS News

Consumers will soon be able to scan certain sodas to get additional nutrition information.

The American Beverage Association on Tuesday said that major companies it represents, including The Coca-Cola Company, Keurig Dr Pepper and PepsiCo, will use QR codes on their packaging that link soda drinkers to a website created by the trade group that provides more information about the beverages’ ingredients.

“Consumers want greater transparency and deserve to have confidence in the safety of their foods and beverages,” American Beverage CEO Kevin Keane said in a statement.

The website, called “Good to Know,” features a list of more than 140 ingredients found in different beverages. Each is accompanied by a definition, the types of products in which the ingredient is found and where it is authorized worldwide.

While some of the listed ingredients will be familiar to consumers, others, such as Lion’s Mane and L-Carnitine, are more obscure. The site does not provide ingredient breakdowns for each brand, so consumers will still need to look at the label on their can or bottle to see exactly what it contains.

Other brands participating in the new QR code initiative include Celsius, Monster Energy, Polar Beverages and Red Bull, according to NBC News.

This isn’t the first time soda brands have used QR codes. Coca-Cola has also used them in promotional campaigns.

    blob:https://www.cbsnews.com/b1da0b74-41c7-42dc-a2d2-8d0e83ff9944

The American Beverage Association said the information on the “Good to Know” site aligns with that from global food safety agencies. Customers can access safety assessments from the Food and Drug Administration, the European Food Safety Authority and Health Canada.

The initiative comes as Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. moves to curb sweetened drinks as part of his Make America Healthy Again effort.

Earlier this year, the Trump administration asked the public to report hospitals and nursing homes that serve sugary drinks and meals that don’t meet the Department of Agriculture’s dietary guidelines.

Kennedy also recently challenged Starbucks and Dunkin’ over the amount of sugar they add to their beverages, sparking backlash from politicians and coffee drinkers.
