After raging against a key tool in President Donald Trump’s economic arsenal, Senate Democrats quietly green-lit the authority before they left Washington, D.C.

Democrats have bashed Trump’s use of tariffs since they were first floated during his campaign in 2024, and have taken every chance to challenge and push back against duties imposed on other countries throughout his second term.

But nearly the entire Senate Democratic caucus voted in favor of giving Trump limited tariff authority in exchange for bone-crushing sanctions against Russia. Only nine Democrats, and Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., ultimately voted against the package.

PUTIN, RUSSIA PUT ON NOTICE AS SENATE TAKES CRUCIAL STEP TO GRIND DOWN THE KREMLIN’S WAR MACHINE

Now, Trump has ignited a trade war with Canada, introducing 50% tariffs against the country on roughly $20 billion worth of goods, which has reignited the debate on the campaign trail and as Democrats seek to flip the Senate and corral his authority.

Some warned that giving congressional approval would allow the administration to abuse the power.

“It gives Donald Trump massive new tariff authority that he can use to threaten our trading partners and raise prices on the American people,” Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., said on the Senate floor. “I believe senators will come to deeply regret voting to give Donald Trump this tariff authority.”

Though not directly connected to the authority granted in the sanctions package, which directly deals with countries buying oil from Russia, Trump’s move to enter into a fight with one of America’s top trade partners is what he warned of: giving the White House congressional leeway.

TRUMP ALLIES PUSH TO ARM PRESIDENT WITH NEW TARIFF WEAPON TO PUNISH COUNTRIES ‘RIPPING OFF’ AMERICA

The tariff authority baked into the sanctions package would allow Trump to issue levies of up to 500% on Russian imports and tariffs of up to 100% on the top five countries buying Russian energy, like China and India.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., who, alongside the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, pushed the package for nearly two years, told Fox News Digital that if Trump strays outside the legal confines built into the package, the courts will block him as they did with his sweeping tariffs unveiled on “Liberation Day” last year.

“If Donald Trump wants to break this law, he will be restrained by the courts, just as when he broke the law on tariffs previously,” Blumenthal said. “We can’t do any more than be explicit in limiting his authority to the top five purchasers, and only those countries, by the terms, specific in the legislation.”

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., who went on to vote against the package, told reporters last month that Trump “has shown what he will do with broad tariff authority.”

TRUMP BET TARIFFS WOULD BRING BACK AMERICAN FACTORY JOBS. NEW REPORT SAYS IT DIDN’T WORK

Sen. Raphael Warnock, D-Ga., attends a rally to speak out against the SAVE America Act outside the U.S. Capitol on March 18, 2026, in Washington, D.C.(Heather Diehl/Getty Images)

“Heck, he’s shown what he’ll do even if he doesn’t have authority,” she said.

And Paul, who has been one of the lone Republicans to consistently oppose Trump’s use of tariffs, introduced an amendment alongside Wyden to strip them from the broader package, warning that the duties were nothing more than an additional tax on the American people.

“Do not let sympathy for Ukraine blind you to the reality of tariffs,” Paul said.

One Senate Democrat, Sen. Raphael Warnock, D-Ga., received guarantees from U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer that the tariffs baked into the sanctions package would just be limited to the top five energy trading partners with the Kremlin.

He told Fox News Digital that the concern was that Trump could broadly bend the rules in the package and impose duties as he pleased, which is why he sought guardrails and commitments from the administration.

“It was important to hold Vladimir Putin accountable. He is a war criminal,” Warnock said. “His aggression towards Ukraine has national security implications for us. But at the same time, it was important to put some guardrails on this president. And I think I made considerable progress in making sure that that happens.”

President Donald Trump signed an executive order Thursday afternoon to change the name of Lake Ontario to “Lake America,” his latest escalation as he engages in a tense trade war with Canada.

“‘Lake of America’ was something I’ve been thinking about for a long time,” Trump said from the Oval Office. “We have a gulf and we have a lake. Now, all we need is an ocean. So, maybe we’ll have to change the name of the Atlantic and/or the Pacific. Maybe we’ll change them both.”

Surrounded by large maps of the Great Lakes, Trump said the name change was “effective immediately,” and that his staff had “filed all the necessary papers, documents, everything else.” A White House aide claimed the lake “has most of its volume in the United States” and that the “deepest parts” are in US territory.

Asked why he’s focused on needling American allies, Trump replied: “The Canadian officials have treated us very badly. They’re nasty people.” He added that the Canadians are the “worst to deal with on trade,” calling them “entitled.”

This is a breaking story and will be updated.

Netflix offers extended look at Grand Theft Auto 6 before November launch

    August 27, 2026 / 3:53 PM EDT / CBS News

Video game enthusiasts are getting an extended look at Grand Theft Auto 6 before its eagerly awaited commercial launch this fall.

Netflix on Thursday hosted an exclusive preview of the game, which is set to arrive on Nov. 19, for its streaming subscribers.

The 25-minute video features a compilation of clips of GTA 6’s two main protagonists carrying out a series of heists at convenience stores, jewelry stores and diners as they try to escape the cops. The opening sequence shows the partners in mayhem, Jason Duval and Lucia Camino, arriving at an apartment as part of what appears to be a drug deal before getting involved in a shootout with police.

The preview also introduces viewers to the fictional state of Leonida, which is based on Florida, as Jason and Lucia drive around, hit the bars and get caught in scuffles, among other adventures.

The promotional event is part of a partnership between Netflix and Rockstar Games, the company behind the Grand Theft Auto franchise. For those without a Netflix subscription, the preview will air Thursday on Rockstar Games’ website and on YouTube at 9 p.m. ET.

Fans across the country have been eager to get their hands on GTA 6, which is arriving 13 years after the debut of the fifth installment. The game was originally slated for release in 2025, but Rockstar delayed its debut twice, saying the developers needed more time to hone it.

Anticipation is building as the game’s release date approaches. One U.S. Army unit in Georgia is offering active-duty soldiers a four-day pass to play the popular game in exchange for signing a reenlistment contract.

Rockstar has already offered some sneak peeks of the game through GTA 6 trailers and screenshots. Spoilers posted by leakers have also surfaced online, a development the company recently acknowledged on social media.

“While it is unfortunate that the intended game experience may now be impacted by some spoilers, we hope that everyone will wait a bit longer to experience the game for themselves on November 19,” Rockstar wrote on Wednesday.

Investment bank Piper Sandler estimates that GTA 6 will sell 35 million copies by April 2027, according to Forbes. GTA 5 sold 11 million copies on the day it was released in September 2013, the media outlet reported.

    What is GTA 6 about?

Tudum, Netflix’s companion site for fans where it offers exclusive interviews and behind-the-scenes content, described GTA 6 as the “most immersive evolution of the series yet.”

The game features protagonists Jason, an Army veteran, and Lucia, the game’s first-ever female protagonist, who landed in Leonida Penitentiary after “fighting for her family,” according to Rockstar’s site. Caught in a criminal conspiracy, they team up to pull off a series of heists and other crimes in Florida.

“Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them,” a description of GTA 6 reads. “But when an easy score goes wrong, they find themselves on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, in the middle of a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida — forced to rely on each other more than ever if they want to make it out alive.”

Other characters in the game include Cal Hampton, one of Jason’s friends, and Boobie Ike, described by Rockstar as a “Vice City Legend” who uses his time on the streets to help him build a business empire.

GOP Rep. Chuck Edwards tries to sway colleagues not to censure him: ‘An affectionate friendship is not a sexual proposition.’

Republican Rep. Chuck Edwards is lobbying his colleagues to vote against a possible censure over allegations that he repeatedly made unwanted advances toward two female staffers, asserting that familiar conduct toward his employees was not necessarily inappropriate.

“An affectionate friendship is not a sexual proposition,” the North Carolina Republican wrote in a letter, which a source provided to CNN after it was shared in a group chat for members of Congress. “A gift is not sexual misconduct. A compliment is not sexual misconduct. Poetry is not sexual misconduct.”

Edwards’ defense comes after the House Ethics Committee released an investigation earlier this month that found “substantial evidence” that the congressman made unwanted advances toward the staffers and recommended the House vote to censure him. Though Edwards has already abandoned his reelection bid, the letter, first reported by NOTUS, appears to indicate that he wants to avoid the rare rebuke by his colleagues. He insisted that despite the ethics committee investigation and findings, he never broke House rules, even if some may not approve of his behavior.

The congressman argued that the Ethics Committee “repeatedly relies upon interactions that it says ‘could be interpreted as romantic.’”

“But something that could be interpreted as romantic is worlds apart from establishing an unwanted sexual advance,” Edwards wrote.

His letter asserted “there is no House rule prohibiting Members and staff from being friends. There is no House rule prohibiting Members and staff from spending social time together. There is no House rule prohibiting a member from genuinely and deeply caring about people with whom he has worked closely for years.”

The House could vote as early as next week on Edwards’ censure. A fellow member would have to file the censure resolution, and it would have to be voted on within two legislative days — meaning days that Congress is in session.

Censure is a rare punishment in the House. Since it started in the mid 1830s, only 29 members have been censured by the full House. If a majority of the House approves of the censure, the accused member stands in the well of the House to be reprimanded.

In his letter, Edwards also argued that the Ethics Committee did not include details he shared with them about his interactions with staff, including that he gave gifts to both men and women in his office. The Ethics Committee declined to comment.

“I gave gifts to other members of my staff-male and female-including wine, olive oil, cookware, rum, Kennedy Center tickets and even a handgun to a male staffer. Those acts are directly relevant to whether gifts to these two women demonstrated romantic interest or reflected a broader pattern of generosity toward people with whom I worked closely, and that was a practice I exercised in my small business,” he wrote.

Edwards’s letter drew condemnations from some Democrats and advocates Thursday.

Cheyenne Hunt, the executive director of Reckoning Action, a women’s rights advocacy group, said in a statement: “Anyone who thinks a Congressman gifting a young female staffer poetry is appropriate is telling on themselves. Regardless of his intentions, Congressman Edwards has a documented pattern of subjecting his staff to unwanted and inappropriate behavior. He doesn’t get to decide where the line of professionalism gets drawn.”

Said Teresa Leger Fernandez, chair of the Democratic Women’s Caucus: “This is 22 pages of ramblings by someone who refuses to understand sexual harassment or his abusive power over the women who worked for him. His lack of remorse speaks for itself.”

Edwards’ office did not immediately respond to CNN’s request for comment about the letter.

(CBS News)

OpenAI, Anthropic, tech leaders warn of “limited window” to defend against AI cyber threats

    August 27, 2026 3:58 PM EDT / CBS News

    By Megan Cerullo Reporter, MoneyWatch

Leading developers of the most powerful artificial intelligence tools are warning that their technology may soon be used to carry out sophisticated cyberattacks against companies and institutions, ranging from hospitals to technology firms.

In an open letter published Thursday, the leaders of OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft and dozens of other signatories said there is a “limited window” to strengthen cyber defenses and protect against potentially devastating AI-enabled cyberattacks. That window may last only months, it added.

The signatories also include security companies like CrowdStrike and banks including Citi and Capital One.

The same AI advances that could increase risks to public services and technology infrastructure can also help organizations identify and “fix weaknesses” that leave them vulnerable, the letter said.

“If we act decisively, we can use the defenders’ window to make our digital world much more secure,” the letter said.

A recent CrowdStrike report on cybersecurity found that AI-enabled attacks increased by 89% in 2025 compared to 2024.

    How to defend against attacks

The companies said that the status quo for cybersecurity “won’t be enough.”

“Longstanding bugs, excessive permissions, misconfigurations, insecure and unpatched software, weak authentication and technical debt in legacy systems have left systems exposed,” the letter said.

Security teams need to be beefed up and invested in, while defenders against AI cyberattacks need to be equipped with the most sophisticated AI-enabled tech, it said.

The letter also called on companies and experts to share their expertise.

“Share threat intelligence and tested playbooks, and measure progress by how many organizations are protected, how quickly attacks are contained, and whether fixes work,” it added.

    Call to action

Every organization needs to prioritize cybersecurity, according to the letter. That might include replacing or upgrading older tech systems that are vulnerable to attack.

Specialized cybersecurity firms have an obligation to test defenses against evolving cyber capabilities continually. Governments also have a key role to play in containing cyber threats through coordinated actions and by funding cyber defense strategies at the local, national, and international levels, it added.

Lastly, the letter said it is incumbent upon frontrunner AI companies — including those that signed the document — to fund training, provide “responsible” access to their models, and adequately secure them.

Trump to meet refiners, fuel retailers as Iran war boosts gas prices ahead of midterms, sources say

Aug 27 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump is expected to meet with U.S. refiners and fuel retailers next week to highlight efforts to lower gasoline prices, as his administration seeks to ‌ease pressure on consumers from the Iran war ahead of November’s congressional midterm elections, people familiar with the matter said.

The political stakes are high for Trump and his fellow Republicans, who are trying to defend narrow majorities in Congress in November. The war with Iran has become increasingly unpopular, while higher gasoline prices threaten to undercut Trump’s 2024 campaign promise to bring down the cost of living. Reuters/Ipsos polling shows Trump’s approval rating has fallen to 33%, with just 31% of Americans approving of the conflict.

Attendees of the meeting are expected to include refiners like Valero Energy Corp (VLO.N), Marathon Petroleum Corporation (MPC.N) and PBF Energy Inc (PBF.N), along with major retailers, according to two sources familiar with the plans.

The biggest U.S. oil companies and refiners reported strong second-quarter earnings as the Iran war disrupted ‌global energy markets and tightened supplies of gasoline and other refined products.

Those results have drawn criticism from Trump, who has argued that oil companies benefiting from higher prices should do more to bring down costs for consumers. Trump has publicly pressed major producers and refiners to lower prices.

    Advertisement · Scroll to continue

The conflict has pushed up oil and gasoline prices by disrupting energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of the world’s oil flowed before the war that began on February 28. U.S. regular gasoline has been above $4 a gallon, roughly $1 more than a year ago, creating an especially visible economic burden for voters heading into the midterms.

Oil prices surged as high as $112 a barrel earlier in the conflict, although crude has since retreated as shipping through the strait has partially resumed.

Attorney General Todd Blanche announced Thursday the indictments of 81 alleged members of Los Baja Deo, or LBD, a Puerto Rican-based drug trafficking organization.

On Wednesday, the FBI and the Puerto Rico Police Department arrested 70 alleged LBD members on numerous charges. LBD has been active for years throughout the western side of the U.S. territory, Blanche said.

The indictments charged the suspects with drug possession and distribution in connection to activities prosecutors said began in 2021. Blanche said 21 of the defendants were also charged with illegal firearms possession.

They allegedly distributed “mass quantities” of cocaine, crack cocaine, fentanyl, heroin and marijuana, which generated $49 million in proceeds, Blanche said.

Blanche said the defendants “maintained a steady supply of highly addictive and potentially lethal substances that endangered the community, fueled addiction and exposed entire public housing projects in Mayagüez and nearby neighborhoods to violence and chaos.”

The takedown of the 70 alleged LBD members took place following a San Juan Homeland Security Task Force investigation, according to the attorney general.

Blanche called this “a great example of the success” Homeland Security has had in “combating violent crime and the illegal flow of narcotics.”

“If there’s additional co-conspirators or members of this organization that have not been charged, I promise you that this investigation doesn’t stop because an indictment is returned,” Blanche said. “We’ll find out. And if I were them, I would probably not be sleeping well tonight.”

Also announced at the press conference was an operation that took place Wednesday against Los Choneros and Los Lobos, Ecuador-based drug trafficking organizations.

There were 26 arrests, including of four leaders of the Los Lobos cartel, Blanche said. This comes after local police arrested Eduardo Gomez, another alleged leader of the gang, at his home in Quito on May 14.

Blanche said one metric ton of cocaine was seized from the two cartels, as well as around $1 million in U.S. currency.

Additionally, authorities said they recovered 35 rifles, 26 vehicles, over 40 cellphones and an airplane. Three clandestine airports and landing strips were also destroyed.

Los Choneros and Los Lobos have been U.S. designated terrorist groups since August of last year.

“President Trump called drug dealers terrorists, and that’s because that’s exactly what they are,” Blanche said. “There are drug boats that are getting blown up because of trying to bring cocaine into our country.”

Blanche also announced the extradition of Erick Randhiel Mosquea Polanco, a long-sought cocaine kingpin from the Dominican Republic.

He was transported from Colombia to San Juan to face charges in two separate cases. He also faces federal money laundering charges in New Jersey, Blanche said.

Key moments from Lindsay Clancy trial: What to know as jury weighs case of mom who killed 3 kids

    2026-08-27T12:37:00-0400 / CBS News

Lindsay Clancy’s murder case is now in the hands of a Massachusetts jury after 22 days of testimony in Plymouth Superior Court.

Clancy, 36, has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in the deaths of her three children, Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months. Clancy admits to killing the children in their Duxbury home on Jan. 24, 2023. She then slit her throat and jumped from a window, breaking her neck. The fall left her paralyzed.

Her defense claims that she was overmedicated and suffering from postpartum psychosis, and so should not be held criminally responsible. Prosecutors allege that she planned the killings and faked her suicide attempt.

Most of the testimony has revolved around Lindsay Clancy’s mental state and the treatment she received. Here are the biggest takeaways from the trial.

Husband testifies he “knew something was wrong”

Patrick Clancy’s testimony about the murders spanned two days. During the first day, he described his then-wife’s mental health struggles and said that, despite those issues, Lindsay Clancy had had”one of her best days”in the hours before the killings. Patrick Clancy was married to Lindsay Clancy at the time of their children’s deaths but they have since divorced.

On the second day of his testimony, Patrick Clancy described leaving the house to pick up takeout food that Lindsay Clancy had ordered. While picking up the food, she texted him asking him to pick up medicine at CVS. The two spoke on the phone while he ran the errand, he said. Patrick Clancy testified that when he returned home, he noticed “the house was really quiet.” He “knew something was wrong” when he found his bedroom door locked, he said.

Patrick Clancy said he saw “blood everywhere” that “looked like it was sprayed, almost like with a hose” and an open window. He ran outside, he said, and found Lindsay Clancy on the ground with “deep cuts on her wrists” and a red line across her neck. Lindsay Clancy said she had tried to die by suicide, Patrick Clancy said. When he asked where their children were, she said they were in the basement. She did not indicate they were in danger or that they had been harmed, Patrick Clancy said.

He testified that he stayed with his wife until first responders arrived. Then, he ran to the basement, he said. He described finding his children and trying to give them CPR before first responders arrived.

First responders described “chaotic” crime scene

First responders who arrived at the Clancy home testified about what they witnessed on the third day of the trial. They recounted a distressing, chaotic scene that began in the backyard of the house.

Officer Stephen Hall said he heard a male voice, identified as Patrick Clancy’s, calling for help from the backyard. There, Hall found Lindsay Clancy with cuts to both wrists and her neck.

After hearing “a loud scream from inside,” Hall and fellow officer Brian Josephine entered the home and found Patrick Clancy in the basement, where he had discovered the bodies of his three children, Hall said.

When Patrick Clancy saw the officers, he “looked up and screamed ‘She killed the f—–g kids,’” Josephine testified.

Duxbury fire captain and paramedic PJ Hussey said that he put out an “all call” for Duxbury personnel and that things “turned very chaotic very quickly” as more resources arrived on scene.

Lindsay Clancy described depression in diary, notes

On the fifth day of the trial, excerpts from Lindsay Clancy’s diary were read aloud. In an excerpt read by prosecutor Shannan Buckingham, Clancy wrote that she was struggling with her youngest child Callan’s sleep schedule and “felt like I’m drowning every day.”

In an entry dated Nov. 18, 2022, Lindsay Clancy wrote, “It’s like I’m so desperate to get a mental break from taking care of everyone that my mind is trying to make something physically wrong with me.”

In an entry read aloud by defense attorney Kevin Reddington, Lindsay Clancy described “horrible insomnia and anxiety which is causing depression,” as well as “crazy brain fog” and “no appetite.” She also described feeling “horribly guilty” about the state of her marriage, wrote that she felt “completely disconnected with” her baby, and “like I’m going through the motions every day.”

“I don’t know what’s wrong with me,” Lindsay Clancy wrote, according to Reddington. “I want help. I want to be well.”

In an entry in her phone’s notes app on Oct. 25, 2022, Lindsay Clancy described struggling to connect with her youngest child.

“I want to feel love and connection with all my kids. I’m also probably having a bit of an internal conflict because my whole life I’ve wanted to have a lot of kids. I still don’t want Cal to be our last, but I have a lot of figuring out to do before I have another,” Lindsay Clancy wrote, according to Timothy Chiappini, a unit commander for the Massachusetts State Police critical investigations team who was asked to do a forensic analysis on the phone.

In the entry, Lindsay Clancy mentioned being “on the fence” about starting a new medication, and said she wanted “to be able to relax and take care of my kids.”

“Cal was so very planned and desired. I want to be able to give him all the love he deserves,” Lindsay Clancy added, according to Chiappini.

Psychiatrist saw “no signs of psychosis” day before killings

Much of the trial focused on Clancy’s behavior in the time leading up to the killings. During his testimony, Patrick Clancy said his ex-wife was “extremely sleep deprived and highly anxious.” Her defense attorneydescribed times where she would be on the couch, rocking back and forth with her head under a pillow.

Dr. Jennifer Tufts, who was treating Lindsay Clancy at the time of the killings, testified on the10th day of the trial that Lindsay Clancy was “completely denying any suicidal ideation or homicidal ideation” the day before the murders.

“There were no signs of psychosis or mania. So there were no serious signs that her safety or anyone else’s safety was at risk,” she testified. Tufts said she did not recommend a hospitalization for Lindsay Clancy.

When asked by the defense if a medication increase that Tufts had ordered had pushed Lindsay Clancy “over the edge,” Tufts disagreed, though she said that her notes indicated Lindsay Clancy was struggling with medication side effects.

Patrick Clancy was concerned about his wife’s medications

Psychiatric nurse practitioner Rebecca Jollotta, who treated Lindsay Clancy in 2022, said on the 11th day of the trial that Patrick Clancy expressed concern about his wife’s reaction to psychiatric medications. Jollotta said Patrick Clancy attended one of his wife’s appointments, and that they spoke on the phone twice.

“I believe he was concerned about her symptoms and he thought they started when she started being medicated,” Jollotta testified. She added that she “collaborated with” the Clancys to take Lindsay Clancy “off certain medications” in response to Patrick Clancy’s concerns.

Lindsay Clancy became emotional throughout trial

Lindsay Clancy had multiple emotional outbursts during the trial. When she heard the 911 call from her ex-husband to police, she was hunched over the defense table. After the 911 audio concluded, a recess was called and she was wheeled from the room sobbing loudly.

Testimony from doctors, herformer nanny and other witnesses also brought her to tears. She cried loudly asautopsy photos were shown on the eighth day of the trial.

Reddington claimed he heard prosecutors say “shut her up” on a hot mic as Lindsay Clancy cried, but the district attorney’s office said an unknown court employee had said “shut it off,” referring to the projected image of the autopsy screenings.

On the12th day of the trial, Lindsay Clancy could be heard saying “I can’t do it” as a medical examiner described the injuries on her children’s bodies. Jurors were sent out of the room twice.

Coworker recalled conversation about postpartum mental health

Margaret Hamp, who worked with Lindsay Clancy at Mass General Hospital until 2022, said the two had a conversation about postpartum mental health after a patient arrived at the hospital with plans to harm herself while pregnant. Lindsay Clancy was shocked by the patient’s case, Hamp said. Hamp was called by the defense on the 14th day of the trial.

Hamp said she asked Clancy if she was familiar with the case of Andrea Yates, a Texas mother who drowned her five children in 2001 and was found not guilty on a retrial because she was suffering from postpartum psychosis. Lindsay Clancy said she was unfamiliar with the case, Hamp said.

“We had a conversation about mental health and pregnancy and postpartum. I asked her if she had ever heard of the Andrea Yates case. She hadn’t. I explained that to her and she cried and she said, ‘How could a mother hurt her children?’” Hamp said.

Family members were worried about Lindsay Clancy

Susan Clancy said that her ex-daughter-in-law was a “wonderful mother” who “loved her children” and was “begging for help” as she struggled with symptoms including insomnia and anxiety. Susan Clancy, a nurse, said she reached out to colleagues who were running a program to help postpartum mothers.

Lindsay Clancy’s mother, Paula Musgrove, said that her daughter sent texts asking her to stay the night and expressing concern about the medications she was taking.

Musgrove also recalled a conversation with Patrick and Lindsay Clancy where her daughter expressed a fear of hurting the children. Musgrove said she wasn’t concerned by the statement because she was present at the time. Texts showed Musgrove checking in on her daughter in the weeks before the killings.

Allison Ozga, Lindsay Clancy’s sister, described several interactions before the killings. In November 2022, Lindsay Clancy “did not look good, her energy wasn’t high,” Ozga said. A month later, in December 2022, Lindsay Clancy told Ozga she was in “a really tough spot.” Ozga said she asked Lindsay Clancy if she was safe, and she said yes. Ozga also testified that she saw Lindsay Clancy two weeks before the killings and had no concerns about the safety of the children.

Lindsay Clancy described hearing voice, psychologist testifies

Dr. Paul Zeizel, a clinical and forensic psychologist who met with Lindsay Clancy when she was hospitalized after the murders, testified on Tuesday that she told her then-husband she “heard a male voice ordering her” to kill her children.

Zeizel said he did not believe Lindsay Clancy was faking her symptoms.

“She told Patrick that she loved him very much. She was able to express a lot of emotion, but expressed love for him. She said she heard a male voice ordering her, telling her that she didn’t have any choice but she had to kill her children and then kill herself,” Zeizel said.

Psychologist Paul Zeizel testifies in Plymouth Superior Court on Aug. 18, 2026. John Tlumacki/Boston Globe via AP, Pool

Patrick Clancy also testified about the conversation. He said that Lindsay Clancy “didn’t talk about our kids” during the call, but described “what she went through.”

“She said she heard a man’s voice telling her if she didn’t do it now, she would lose her chance, or something like that,” Patrick Clancy testified.

Lindsay Clancy detailed killings afterward, psychiatrist says

Dr. Avram Mack, a forensic psychiatrist and the first rebuttal witness called by the prosecution on the 18th day of trial, said that when he spoke to Lindsay Clancy after the killings, she also described hearing a male voice.

“The voice said, to the effect of, ‘You should kill the kids, this is your last chance so that you can kill yourself,’” Mack said.

Mack also said she described the murders.

“She described that while that was happening, she was saying out loud, ‘Go to God,’” Mack said.

Psychiatrists dispute Lindsay Clancy’s state of mind

Mack said that he believed she knew the difference between right and wrong at the time of the killings, and that she had “retained the capcaity required for having criminal responsibility for these actions.”

Mack said that while he believed Lindsay Clancy suffered from a major depressive episode and anxiety, he saw no evidence that she was bipolar in a manic state. He also said he did not believe her medication regimen had led to her being psychotic at the time of the killings.

Dr. Phillip Resnick testifies in Chardon, Ohio, on Wednesday, May 2, 2012. AP Photo/Amy Sancetta

But Dr. Phillip Resnick, a forensic psychiatrist who was a key witness in the trial of Andrea Yates, said his assessment led him to believe she was psychotic at the time of the murders and that he believed she was suffering from severe depression, mild mania and bipolar disorder before the killings.

“She was clearly psychotic on that day,” Resnick said, adding that she was under the influence of a “command hallucination.”

“Not only did she hear a command, but she felt that her body was taken over by an external force where she was in a dream state and did not have control of her own body,” Resnick said. “It was almost like she was a puppet and someone else was pulling the strings.”

Lindsay Clancy’s attorney calls for a mistrial

Reddington called for a mistrial Monday after a witness began speaking about Catholicism. Forensic psychologist Dr. Kirk Heilbrun said when he spoke to Lindsay Clancy in April, she expressed a belief that “she and her children would be together in heaven with God.”

“She was raised as a Catholic. As I understand Catholic considerations, that’s not necessarily what happens. But when I asked her about that, when I said, ‘Isn’t suicide a mortal sin?’,” Heilbrun said, before the defense objected and Sullivan called a sidebar with attorneys. Jurors were sent out of the room during a brief recess.

During the recess, Reddington called for a mistrial, noting that this was the second time religion had been discussed in the trial and his concerns that such testimony “is just over the top.”

Sullivan said he would not declare a mistrial, but reprimanded the prosecution. When the jury returned, Sullivan told jurors that the remarks about religion were “immaterial, irrelevant and to be disregarded,” and ended court early for the day.

    Attorneys present closing arguments

Reddington and prosecutor Jennifer Sprague both outlined the case in their closing arguments to the jury on Aug. 27. The closing arguments came on the 22nd day of trial. Each side had one hour to present their case.

Reddington spoke first, addressing the jury for 52 minutes. He argued that prosecutors had manipulated objective evidence to make Clancy look guilty or paint her behavior in a negative light. He also claimed that medical practitioners failed Clancy and that she was overmedicated at the time of the killings.

“My God, what does she have to do? She was reaching out for help and she was not getting it,” Reddington said. At least two jurors were seen weeping, and others appeared emotional as he spoke.

Sprague began her closing argument immediately after Reddington ended his. She said that there is no dispute that Clancy was mentally ill at the time of the killings, but that the jury’s responsibility is to decide if she was capable from distinguishing right from wrong at the time of the murders.

Sprague highlighted Lindsay Clancy’s behavior before the murders, including looking up how long it would take Patrick Clancy to run the errands she had asked him to complete, as indicators that she had planned the killings and was capable of acting rationally. As Sprague described the killings, Lindsay Clancy could be seen crying.

Sprague’s closing arguments lasted 54 minutes. After she was finished, Sullivan gave final instructions to the jury.

    2026-08-27T16:45:13.955Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/08/27/politics/trump-midterm-loss-republicans

Trump has already found someone to blame if Republicans lose the midterms

President Donald Trump has never taken kindly to losing elections. He’s often tried to explain it away by citing bogus claims of mass voter fraud.

But ahead of the 2026 midterm election, he appears to be lining up another culprit and scapegoat: his fellow Republicans.

Repeatedly in recent weeks, Trump has suggested that if congressional Republicans lose big in November, they will have themselves to blame — and certainly not him.

This is ridiculous, of course. Trump is historically unpopular and appears to have alienated many voters even in his own party in ways that clearly harm the GOP’s midterm hopes. Congressional Republicans could certainly have insulated themselves better from Trump’s problems and stood up more to his excesses, but he would clearly shoulder the lion’s share of the blame.

Regardless, though, Trump blaming the GOP for its own losses — if they do indeed lose control of either chamber — would set up a very interesting intraparty clash at a particularly sensitive time. It would come as it’s licking its wounds from a bad election and perhaps considering a new path forward from the Trump era.

The president turned heads Wednesday by re-sharing a month-old post from a loyal supporter who warned that Republicans were “sleepwalking toward a midterm reckoning they don’t see coming.”

The post laid the blame squarely at Republicans’ feet for failing to deliver legislation to support Trump’s agenda.

“If Republicans in Congress don’t start producing tangible results, they’re going to discover that frustration has consequences,” the supporter, Matt Van Swol, wrote in the original post that Trump re-shared.

Trump followed that up with another post laying out a lengthy list of his own supposed accomplishments. He later posted an image declaring “mission accomplished” in the Iran war.

It wasn’t difficult to get Trump’s implication: I did all of this, and my party hasn’t done enough to help me.

When asked Thursday whether Trump was washing his hands of congressional Republicans, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt responded: “The president is wholeheartedly committed to helping Republicans across the board retain the majority.”

But Trump said those Republicans would be to blame much more explicitly — and in his own words — earlier this month.

In an interview with Punchbowl News, he went so far as to claim (falsely) that people were only angry at other Republicans.

“The question is, will (people) vote? Because a lot of them are very angry at Republicans, to be honest with you,” Trump said. He added: “They’re angry at Republicans, but they’re not angry at me.”

(In fact, 63% of Americans disapprove of Trump in the CNN Poll of Polls. And fewer than 1 in 5 Americans “strongly” approve of him in most quality polls.)

Trump also seemed to set the table for this argument earlier in the summer, when he implored Senate Republicans to nix the filibuster and pass his elections bill, the “Save America Act.”

He repeatedly claimed that passing the legislation would mean Democrats couldn’t win elections anymore, and that failing to do so could cost the GOP dearly.

“We can only lose the midterms if we allow ourselves to lose the midterms – if we are foolish, stupid, and unwise,” he said at Mount Rushmore on July 3.

Later that month, he said, “If they don’t get it done, it’s going to be a very bad thing for the party.”

And he added on July 29 while talking about the midterms, “If we don’t (have unanimous GOP support), people should look at those Republicans.”

Trump also repeatedly in July targeted Senate Majority Leader John Thune in ways that suggested he could be lining him up as a scapegoat for failing to nix the filibuster.

“Remember, stupidity always brings LOSING & DEATH!” he said in one missive on social media.

Trump has also taken in recent days to telling voters to“pretend” he’s on the ballot this fall and to vote accordingly. He’s also aimed to make the midterms about him, including via his Trump-focused midterm convention next month that has Republicans fretting and, according to the Atlantic, heavily featuring himself in ads from his super PAC.

That points to a very real problem for the GOP, which is that the Trump coalition doesn’t show up as much when he isn’t personally on the ballot. And with the president’s approval ratings so low, Republicans acknowledge there’s little room to win over swing voters — their best bet, sources have told CNN, is to turn out the MAGA faithful.

But the president has also set this up as being about how voters love him but not other Republicans.

And it’s not difficult to see him reaching for that message if the November election turns out poorly for the GOP.

If that happens, the narrative will quickly turn to how much of a lame-duck president Trump is with two years left — especially if Republicans manage to lose both chambers of Congress. At that point, he’ll need a retort for why he’s not irreparably politically wounded and why this wasn’t a huge vote of no confidence in his presidency.

But if he does blame his party, it could rock the GOP at an inopportune time. Imagine Republicans licking their wounds from a bad election and having Trump piling on top of that by pushing 100% of the blame on the party’s shoulders.

Perhaps Republicans would just take it — like they shrug off so many of Trump’s other provocations. But it might be difficult for some of them to swallow after Trump caused them so many problems. And some might even reason this is a chance to turn the page on a term-limited president.

If it comes to that, Republicans might prefer that Trump keep lying about voter fraud instead.
